Parsha Nitzavim, Elul, Stories, Swords of Iron and other news.

Parsha Nitzavim

After the long Parshiyos filled with loads of Mitzvos, Moshe’s life is coming to an end. This last Drasha occurs on the 7th of Adar 2488. He is giving a Mussar warning to the Nation to behavior and not lax in the Mitzvos. He does not want people slacking off. Yet he prophetically knows that they will. He warns them as we read in the coming weeks of become fat and lazy towards Mitzvos. However, the lecture is only an hour or so as Moshe takes his leave and hands over the sceptre to Yoshua.

These are the four shortest Parshiyos in Torah but potent with their warnings.

29:9 Ye are standing this day all of you before the LORD your God: your heads, your tribes, your elders, and your officers, even all the men of Israel, 10 your little ones, your wives, and thy stranger that is in the midst of thy camp, from the hewer of thy wood unto the drawer of thy water;

Hewers of wood and drawers of water in modern terms would be janitors, street-sweepers and those who collect our garbage now called “sanitation engineers”. The Pasuk is saying that from the lowest in society to the highest in society you are standing before G-D today.

11 that thou shouldest enter into the covenant of the LORD thy God--and into His oath--which the LORD thy God makes with thee this day; 12 that He may establish thee this day unto Himself for a people, and that He may be unto thee a God, as He spoke unto thee, and as He swore unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

You are renewing the oath of your forefathers.

13 Neither with you only do I make this covenant and this oath; 14 but with him that stands here with us this day before the LORD our God, and also with him that is not here with us this day--

Your parents, grandparents and forefathers back to Avraham Avinu.

15 for ye know how we dwelt in the land of Egypt; and how we came through the midst of the nations through which ye passed; 16 and ye have seen their detestable things, and their idols, wood and stone, silver and gold, which were with them-- 17 lest there should be among you man, or woman, or family, or tribe, whose heart turns away this day from the LORD our God, to go to serve the gods of those nations; lest there should be among you a root that bears gall and wormwood;

Idols are the work of man, imaginary and detestable.

18 and it come to pass, when he heareth the words of this curse, that he bless himself in his heart, saying: 'I shall have peace, though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart--that the watered be swept away with the dry'; 19 the LORD will not be willing to pardon him, but then the anger of the LORD and His jealousy shall be kindled against that man, and all the curse that is written in this book shall lie upon him, and the LORD shall blot out his name from under heaven; 20 and the LORD shall separate him unto evil out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant that is written in this book of the law.

Guard yourselves from this curse that comes from idol worship.

21 And the generation to come, your children that shall rise up after you, and the foreigner that shall come from a far land, shall say, when they see the plagues of that land, and the sicknesses wherewith the LORD hath made it sick;

Be wary, there will be a time when curses and sickness shall befall you for turning away. I can only give an example on Oct. 7th instead of rejoicing with the Torah, youth were dancing at the Supernova Music Festival with a statue of Buddha in the middle. A short time before, the “Supreme Court of Israel” had ruled that draft exemptions for Yeshiva Students were illegal. A war on HASHEM and a war on Torah Learning! Did you expect that HASHEM would pass on these affronts? Did you think that a land that Vomits Out those who do not respect Torah and Mitzvos would not react? More people left Israel this year than made Aliyah!

22 and that the whole land thereof is brimstone, and salt, and a burning, that it is not sown, nor bears, nor any grass grows therein, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD overthrew in His anger, and in His wrath; 23 even all the nations shall say 'Wherefore hath the LORD done thus unto this land? what means the heat of this great anger?'

Perhaps the commentary, this week, got its greatest boost from an e-mail: Diane Bederman (whom you know for her Ed-Ops in many newspapers) asked me what is the meaning of Yeshayahu (Isa.) 6:11 And I said, "Until when, O Lord?" And He said, "Until cities be desolate without inhabitant and houses without people, and the ground lies waste and desolate.

Until when. will they make their heart heavy and not listen? And He said. I know that they will not repent until retribution comes upon them and they go into exile, and the cities will be desolate without inhabitants. lies waste and desolate. an expression of solitude, without an inhabitant.

6:12 And the Lord removes the people far away, and the deserted places be many in the midst of the land.

And the deserted places be many. For the land will be abandoned by them, and this is the explanation of the language: Deserted places will increase in the midst of the land.

That was Yeshayahu before the destruction of the first Mikdash. But is appears upon reflection to be repeating what Moshe told the nation here. One only has to look out from my porch eastward today to see the barren land that Samuel Clemens saw in his trip to Eretz Yisrael after the destruction of the second Temple and various invasions. From my porch, one can see Kiriat Sefer, Mattiyahu, Lapid/Oranim, the “green line” and the barren hills where Arabs moved in less than 150 years ago. Where there are Jews, the land is green and where there is not, mostly barren. Scorpions, rats, snakes, weasels, wild boars, porcupine, jackals, deer, foxes, hedgehogs perhaps others roam but sparse populations.

24 then men shall say: 'Because they forsook the covenant of the LORD, the God of their fathers, which He made with them when He brought them forth out of the land of Egypt; 25 and went and served other gods, and worshipped them, gods that they knew not, and that He had not allotted unto them; 26 therefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against this land, to bring upon it all the curse that is written in this book; 27 and the LORD rooted them out of their land in anger, and in wrath, and in great indignation, and cast them into another land, as it is this day'.--

Napoleon and Clemens saw this and from of plane over the Shomron and non-Jewish Parts of Yehuda, one sees the barrenness.

28 The secret things belong unto the LORD our God; but the things that are revealed belong unto us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.

The secrets (Sod HASHEM, it is pronounced like soda) is only given to those that fear and love HIM otherwise, they remain hidden.

30:1 And it shall come to pass, when all these things are come upon thee, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before thee, and thou shalt bethink thyself among all the nations, whither the LORD thy God hath driven thee, 2 and shalt return unto the LORD thy God, and hearken to His voice according to all that I command thee this day, thou and thy children, with all thy heart, and with all thy soul; 3 that then the LORD thy God will turn thy captivity, and have compassion upon thee, and will return and gather thee from all the peoples, whither the LORD thy God hath scattered thee. 4 If any of thine that are dispersed be in the uttermost parts of heaven, from thence will the LORD thy God gather thee, and from thence will He fetch thee.

The start of the Geula (redemption) was with two movements. The followers of the Vilna Gaon with a heavy dose of Torah Learning and the followers of the Baal Shem Tov awaiting Moshiach. This revolution in Judaism was about the same time as the American Revolution and prior to the French Revolution.

5 And the LORD thy God will bring thee into the land which thy fathers possessed, and thou shalt possess it; and He will do thee good, and multiply thee above thy fathers. 6 And the LORD thy God will circumcise thy heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the LORD thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live. 7 And the LORD thy God will put all these curses upon thine enemies, and on them that hate thee, that persecuted thee. 8 And thou shalt return and hearken to the voice of the LORD, and do all His commandments which I command thee this day.

Perhaps we could have had redemption already if the Aliyah continued with G-D fearing Jews. Still Synagogues and agriculture were taking root. Unfortunately, the religious Aliyah brought about the secular Aliyah long before Herzl and his Uganda Homeland for the Jews or his ridiculous idea of converting to Catholicism prior to the Dreyfus Trial. Most of the Eastern European still had some roots like Conservative Judaism. It was after the Zionist Conference that completely secular Jews dominated the Aliyah to Israel. There was religious groups in Rehovot, Petach Tikva and other places. Jewish roots were being replanted but the masses were not yet fully repented. Since the tragedy of Oct. 7th, the bringing closer movement started among captives, their families and friends. The reversal of the secular revolution seems to be taking place.

9 And the LORD thy God will make thee over-abundant in all the work of thy hand, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy land, for good; for the LORD will again rejoice over thee for good, as He rejoiced over thy fathers; 10 if thou shalt hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which are written in this book of the law; if thou turn unto the LORD thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul.

If you want over-abundance then increase Yeshivas and Kollelim and not draft the scholars. The recent war on Torah Learning by the courts and Finance Ministry has succeeded in increasing poverty and many anti-army. This has been the way of Judaism for 3300 plus years.

11 For this commandment which I command thee this day, it is not too hard for thee, neither is it far off. 12 It is not in heaven, that thou shouldest say: 'Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, and make us to hear it, that we may do it?' 13 Neither is it beyond the sea, that thou shouldest say: 'Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us, and make us to hear it, that we may do it?' 14 But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it.

You want to be wealthy then increase Torah Learning. It is not far from you to donate a bit more and it is all written down in the Tanach (Holy Scriptures), Mishnah, Talmud, Shulchan Aruch and more modern Halacha. [Example permission to use solid state devices in hospitals on Shabbos.]

15 See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil, 16 in that I command thee this day to love the LORD thy God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments and His statutes and His ordinances; then thou shalt live and multiply, and the LORD thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou go in to possess it.

These sentences right close to Rosh Hashanah and Judgement are an awaking call for us if we want to live.

17 But if thy heart turn away, and thou wilt not hear, but shalt be drawn away, and worship other gods, and serve them; 18 I declare unto you this day, that ye shall surely perish; ye shall not prolong your days upon the land, whither thou pass over the Jordan to go in to possess it.

I have give you free will and therefore chose life.

19 I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that I have set before thee life and death, the blessing and the curse; therefore choose life, that thou mayest live, thou and thy seed;

Inanimate or not, per Kabbalah and structures of atomic vibrations the heaven and earth are perfect witness. The testimony can come in the form or an earthquake, landslide or sink hole from the earth. As for heaven, there can be lightning strikes, unusual ferocious winds, blistering heat and drought, etc. Therefore it is your place in Pasuk 20:

20 to love the LORD thy God, to hearken to His voice, and to cleave unto Him; for that is thy life, and the length of thy days; that thou mayest dwell in the land which the LORD swore unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.

Strength and stamina: In my youth, I could spend 45 minutes concentrating on the English/Hebrew of the Musaf Rosh Hashanah Prayer. Now a days, I no longer need the translation but at 78, it is harder and harder to keep my mind from running off and to realize I am praying in the section that deals with Remembrance, Kingship or Shofar. Remembering to say the additional works added in four places and the Holy King instead of Holy G-D takes more out of me. At 21 I could pray the 45 minutes bent over, now I am happy to pray it standing straight and tall and hopefully my leg muscles will not hurt.

Happy is the man who was able to pray hard in his youth. Now in my elder years it is similar to the gym. At age 77, I was able to sit on the butterfly chest machine and push 100 lbs. or 45 kg. and now 40 kg. or 90 lbs. The Torah and our physical strength only require us: Devarim (Deut.) 6:5 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. So if in your youth you could concentrate and pray 45 minutes and now 15 to 20 minutes with mellowed understanding or you hand the strength to push so and so much weights and now less you are doing what is required of you at your time, situation and place.

The only regret one can have is sinning or not concentrating better on his daily prayer. Instead of “Hear O’LRD my supplication” my mind was on my stocks, saving the environment, behind on my blogspot but not with my supplication. That is where the Teshuva and the being of Repentance should start!

Try to have feeling that the wicked should vanish like smoke and the cruel/bad governments should disappear from the earth, the sections on the kingship, remembrance and shofar and of course one wants to be inscribed in the book of life and health. If you want marriage and family concentrate there.

Preparing for the Holiday: I am a dues paying member of three Minyanim. The indoor Schul, the outdoor Schul that goes inside the Youth Center for both toilets and a shelter for the longer Rosh Hashanah/Yom Kippur Prayers and the one in Florida that gets paid after the Holidays on my next trip there (ble Neder).

There are special foods that we eat as Segulos (Treasures) such as dates, an apple with honey, black-eyed peas, etc. for their Aramaic or Hebrew Names and I added (from a friend of mine Yoseph Katz 55 years ago) a Tongue that should be for a head and not a tail and a year of guarding one’s tongue. [Yoseph was one of the people that welcomed me to Ashdod as a new immigrant 55 years ago. He was a lawyer and wanted to succeed in Israel but one had to know English, Turkish, Arabic, Israeli and Halachic Law and he did not have the strength to relearn his profession so he went back to the States but took nothing or next to nothing if somebody sold his home to move to Israel.]

Returning to our special foods and sayings, some Machzorim have them after the night Kiddush and what to say. Fish against the evil eye and to multiply like fish is not mentioned her. https://www.consciouslykosher.com/blog/simanim-rosh-hashanah-foods

https://www.thespruceeats.com/rosh-hashana-simanim-symbolic-foods-2122243

When our forefathers ordained the custom of eating these foods some with Aramaic Names from Talmudic Times it was for us to request while eating these treasures.

My Rabbi after-work Kollel, Rabbi Yerachmiel Boyer Shlita, told us the following story.

A driver was coming down the street with children playing in it. He honked his horn, and eventually had to stop and got the children to move. “Didn’t you hear the horn?” “ We did.” “So why didn’t you move?” From Rosh Chodesh Elul we hear the Tikiya-Shevarim-Teruah-Tikiya to get us to move out of the way of the Yetzer HaRa and sinning. Isn’t it time to move and clear the way for repentance?

He also said in the name of Rav Salant or Rav Soloveitchik that there was a wagoner who would sneak people across the Polish-Russian Border. As the people were in the last town before the border, their hearts started pounding as the wagoner got meters away from the border, his heart started to pound. The only ones that were not anxious were the horses. We are approaching the Rosh Hashanah Border when the whole world is judged who will live and who not, who by longevity and who a short life. We are approaching that border in a few days. In the Selichos Prayers we are say, “We have sinned, we have transgressed, etc.” “Don’t forsake us in old age when our strength (to pray) is gone don’t abandon us.” And then on Rosh Hashanah “Our Father, Our King, we have sinned before you.”… “We have no deeds! Be charitable and save us!”

Next week, I shall continue with the day of repentance and this will be my third year for medical reasons that I am forbidden to fast and I will have a section on who may or may not fast for Yom Kippur.

Our Sages say we learn loyalty from a dog. On the morning of September 11, 2001, Omar Rivera sat at work on the 71st floor of the World Trade Center’s Tower 1. Guiding Eyes Salty, his steadfast yellow Lab guide dog, settled beside Omar's desk. It was just another normal work day.

When the first plane struck, chaos swept through the building. Smoke, confusion, the smell of fuel. Some people ran for the stairs. Salty, normally a calm and steady presence in the office, began to pace back and forth. Omar made a split-second decision to ignore the instruction to stay at his desk. Instead, he reached for Salty’s harness.

Step by step, Salty guided Omar down the smoke-filled stairwell. The stairs were crowded, and it was a slow descent. Omar decided to let Salty go, with the hope that Salty might be able to escape more quickly. But ultimately, Salty refused to leave. He planted himself at Omar’s side and would not move without him.

It took nearly an hour to reach the ground level. But together, they made it out, just a few minutes before the building collapsed.

Salty was raised and trained by a community of volunteers, instructors, and staff who believe in the power of guide dog partnership. Because of their work, and because of Salty’s loyalty and courage, Omar made it home that day.

Salty passed away in 2008, but his legacy lives on in every guide dog who helps someone face the world with greater confidence and independence.

Today, we remember the thousands of lives lost on 9/11. And we honor the bravery, both human and canine, that carried people to safety. - Facebook

Learn Torah for the sake of heaven until you are too tired

Dateline Thursday this week. I was busy learning again Aruch Chaim again and the Laws of Mourning from Yeah Deah with Rabbi Mimran. I had done a full regiment of sports all arm and all leg muscles. I learned Aruch Chaim as it is easy and practical in daily life a bit lively. Yeah Deah was deeper on the laws of mourning. Shin-Mem (340) I read a few Seifim (sub-sections of the main Halacha) I got up to Chaf-Bet (22) and read it but it did not sink in so I asked my Chavruta (learning partner) to re-read it for me. My Chaf-Gimmel (23) I was starting to doze off and not make sense with my reading. I had planned to stop at Chaf-Vav (26) at the bottom of the page but was starting to doze off. I again asked Rabbi Mimran to re-read it and before I wished him Good Shabbos. “This is what G-D wants of me to learn for the sake of heaven with all my heart, soul and might – no more no less.” Great Rabbis like Rav Chaim Kanjievsky, Gershon Edelstein and others learned until their heart stopped! I have whom to emulate.

A Rosh Hashanah Dream by Rabbi Yerachmiel Tilles

https://ascentofsafed.com/cgi-bin/ascent.cgi?Name=1449-51

Once, during Chanukah in the middle 1800's, Rabbi Yekusiel-Yehuda Teitelbaum,[1] known as the Yeitev Lev [2] went over to a student in the yeshiva study hall who wasn't learning very well, and whispered something into his ear. The student immediately began to study with immense diligence and concentration.

The other students of the yeshiva who witnessed the exchange were so curious. The anxiously waited for the first opportune time to ask him what the Rebbe said that inspired him so much. He told them this story:

Every year, on Erev Rosh Hashana, the students of the Yeitev Lev's yeshiva would go collect money to give to poor Jews for their holiday needs. They were busy with this mitzvah from the morning until late in the afternoon, which often caused some of the students to be quite distant from the yeshiva when Rosh Hashanah set in. Those students would daven Maariv [pray the Evening Service] in the neighborhood where they were, and sometimes they would eat the Festival meal at the home of one of the strictly observant families in that area, as well.

That year, as Rosh Hashana was approaching, this student was on the other side of town, far away from the yeshiva, so he went to the local synagogue to study Torah and to pray. But being that he was tired from a long, exhausting day of collecting money, he fell asleep during Maariv. Everyone left the shul, the gabbai locked the doors; no one realized that the visiting yeshiva student was still there, sleeping.

In his dream, he saw himself standing before the heavenly court (Rosh Hashana, the first day of the new Jewish year, is when everyone is judged as to what will be for them in the new year in matters of life, health, prosperity and children). His mitzvos and his sins were placed on a scale, and the scale weighed down on the side of sins.

The court ruled that he must die.

The student cried, "I am young. Give me another chance. I will improve my ways..." But the court didn't accept his promises.

Suddenly, the Yeitev Lev came into the court, and asked the judges, "What do you want from this student of mine?" They told him about the court case and the verdict.

The Yeitev Lev said, "He will improve his ways, and I will be the guarantor." Out of respect for the tzadik, the court immediately granted the student another chance to live.

The Yeitev Lev took hold of the youth and pulled him away from the court. Right then, the student woke.

He looked around the unfamiliar, dark shul. It took him a few moments before he remembered how he got there. The doors were locked, so he jumped out the window and rushed to his yeshiva, and to his dormitory to eat the festival meal. As he was rushing through the city streets, he thought about the dream. He decided that it was just a dream; it didn't really happen.

The door of his dormitory was locked, since it was already late at night. He went to the Rebbe's shul where the Yeitev Lev was conducting his festival Tisch (open table), surrounded by his chasidim. The Rebbe saw him, and immediately passed him a cup. "You didn't make Kiddush yet," the Rebbe said.

The student was startled. How did the Rebbe know that he hadn't yet made Kiddush? Perhaps the dream was true, and the Rebbe had just saved him from death. He decided to improve his ways, as he promised he would in his dream, just in case the dream was genuine.

He kept his resolve for some time, but by the time Chanukah came around, eleven weeks after Rosh Hashana, he had already begun to forget about his promise, and again became lax in his Torah studies. That is when the Yeitev Lev whispered in his ear. What he said was: "Did I save your life so you can be like this?"

The student concluded his report to his friends, "Now I am certain that the dream was true. Therefore, I will study with all my might, because that is the reason I was granted longer life, thanks to our Rebbe."

Why this week? Tomorrow night starts Rosh Hashana, year 5786.

Biographical note:
Rabbi Yekusiel-Yehuda Teitelbaum [1803 - 6 Elul 1883] was known as the Yeitev Lev after the title of his chasidic commentary on the Torah. From 1833 he served in various rabbinical positions, until in 1958 he was invited to be the chief rabbi and rosh yeshiva in Sighet, Hungary. There he became known as the Rebbe of Sighet. Chasidic rebbes of several dynasties are his grandsons and great-grandsons, including R. Yoel Teitelbaum [1887-1979], the Satmar Rebbe, and R. Yekusiel-Yehuda Halberstam, the Sanz-Klausenberg Rebbe [1905-1994]. One of the current two Satmar rebbes is his great-great-grandson and bears his name, and his shul in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, is called "Yeitev Lev". (based on Wiki)

Footnotes:
[1]Not to be confused with Rabbi Yekusiel-Yehuda Halberstam, the Sanz-Klausenberg Rav and Rebbe [1905-1994], who was his great-grandson. (Rabbi Yoel Teitelbaum [1887-1979], the Satmar Rebbe, was his grandson.)
[2]The name he gave to a chasidic commentary on the Torah that he composed

Milestone: Rabbi Dovid Kamenetsky, 68, grandson of the Gaon Rabbi Yacov, was a noted marbitz Torah and brilliant Talmid Chacham. He was a son of Maran HaGaon Rav Shmuel Kamenetsky, rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva of Philadelphia and the zekan Roshei Hayeshivos.

Israeli security officials believe that the strike did not achieve its main objective - the elimination of the entire Hamas leadership residing in the country. At this stage, two main possibilities are being examined: that the leaders were present at the location and escaped unharmed or were slightly injured, or alternatively - that they received prior warning and escaped in a coordinated move. https://www.israelnationalnews.com/news/414890

Long before Turning Point USA in the 1960’s there was a group that I was a member of called Young Americans for Freedom. Last night right in the middle of Psalms for the IDF, the three minute alert went off. Eli was about to start Maariv (Evening Prayers) when we said let’s go under Rabbi Goldberg’s cemented garage. We did so and during the Shema the siren went off and Eli had to shout “The LRD your GD is Truth(True)”.

I sat next to Rabbi Mimran on Sunday night and he came down with a Virus or Corona the next morning. Nothing I can do now but take multivitamin pills and drink quinine water.

Swords of Iron Day 714

My son and I served on the front lines in the army but the latest fight of the non-religious to draft Rabbinical Students has awakened the Torah World and when it comes to secular vs. spiritual, the seculars fade into history as the Beotusim and Sadducees in their time and what is ruling in Israel today will be a floor mat in the history books.

Last night the Gadol HaDor (like Moshe or Yoshua in their day on Torah) Rabbi Dov Landau Shlita issued a pre-Rosh Hashanah warning for the whole planet. If the Israeli Government begins shutting down the Torah Institutes it will effect the whole world.

I did not hear the Rav’s Speech. But I can tell you from my own learning: “If you don’t follow MY Torah then I shall turn back the universe to unformed and void!” The implication of the Rav: There will be unnecessary wars and billions will die because of the stupidity. There is nothing new under sun. If you follow and develop Torah learning then you shall have a long life, peace and prosper. If you are fed-up with Torah then G-D is fed up with you. (Parsha Bechukosai and Parsha Ki Savo in the rabbipauli.blogspot.com)

Yesterday the IDF was proud of themselves, they arrested 79 Yeshiva Bochurim and as an immediate result 6 soldiers perished but they don’t know how heaven works. “If you go by ME as it is just a happening then…”. Every day I pray twice a day for the welfare of the soldiers but if the actions of the IDF defy what the L-RD wants, I cannot stop the results with my prayers, just lessen the blows.
