Good Shabbos Book of Numbers 13:1 – 14:45
This week
in the diaspora, the Parsha is one week behind Israel for Shavuos was a two day
holiday Friday and Shabbos it will take a few more weeks until there is a
double Parsha and everybody is on the same page.
Parsha Shelach Lecha Part 1
Last weeks
Parsha ended up with a private conversation involving Lashon HaRa and the
punishment. This week’s Parsha involves a public conversation with Lashon HaRa
against the land of Israel (Eretz Yisrael) and people dying on the spot.
13:1 And
the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 'Send thou men, that they may spy out the
land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel; of every tribe of
their fathers shall ye send a man, every one a prince among them.'
G-D is
telling Moshe to send out twelve spies disguised as people involved in
commerce. Caravans passed through the land of Canaan all the time so nobody
should suspect anything. There were two problems involved here that was
corrected when Yeshua sent out the spies in our Haftorah. They were sent out
privately not publically and reported their conclusions only to the one who
sent them. Here they were sent out publically and reported to the whole nation
unfiltered. That is no way to run the Mossad, CIA, MI-5 or KGB.
3 And Moses sent them from the wilderness of
Paran according to the commandment of the LORD; all of them men who were heads
of the children of Israel. 4 And these were their names: of the tribe of
Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur. 5 Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of
Hori. 6 Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh. 7 Of the tribe of
Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph. 8 Of the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of
Nun. 9 Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu. 10 Of the tribe of
Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi. 11 Of the tribe of Joseph, namely, of the
tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi. 12 Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the
son of Gemalli. 13 Of the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael. 14 Of the
tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi. 15 Of the tribe of Gad, Geuel the
son of Machi. 16 These are the names of the men that Moses sent to spy out the
land. And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua. 17 And Moses sent them to
spy out the land of Canaan, and said unto them: 'Get you up here into the
South, and go up into the mountains; 18 and see the land, what it is; and the
people that dwelleth therein, whether they are strong or weak, whether they are
few or many; 19 and what the land is that they dwell in, whether it is good or
bad; and what cities they are that they dwell in, whether in camps, or in
strongholds; 20 and what the land is, whether it is fat or lean, whether there
is wood therein, or not. And be ye of good courage, and bring of the fruit of
the land.'--Now the time was the time of the first-ripe grapes.—
They would
report their opinions on these questions but unfortunately to all to hear and
the rabble would interpret it differently than the regular leaders or military
leaders.
21 So they went up, and spied out the land from
the wilderness of Zin unto Rehob, at the entrance to Hamat.
This is in
northern Syria. Although not conquered then, in the age of Moshiach things may
straighten themselves differently.
22 And they went up into the South, and came
unto Hebron; and Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were
there.--Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.—
Two things
we learn here. In Chevron, there lived a race of or a number of gigantic men.
Secondly, after the flood of Noach, Eretz Yisrael was settled before Mitzrayim.
23 And they came unto the valley of Eshcol, and
cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bore it upon
a pole between two; they took also of the pomegranates, and of the figs.-- 24
That place was called the valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the
children of Israel cut down from thence.—
Eshcol
means cluster and hence because of the gigantic cluster of grapes, it was given
that name. The modern Eshcol is in an area south of Ashkelon and more interior
than the area close to Gaza.
25 And they returned from spying out the land
at the end of forty days. 26 And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and
to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of
Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the
congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. 27 And they told him, and
said: 'We came unto the land whither thou sent us, and surely it flows with milk and honey; and this is
the fruit of it.
Until this
point everything is pure reporting of facts and fruits with no commentary or
opinions.
28 Howbeit the people that dwell in the land
are fierce, and the cities are fortified, and very great; and moreover we saw
the children of Anak there. 29 Amalek dwelleth in the land of the South; and
the Hittite, and the Jebusite, and the Amorite, dwell in the mountains; and the
Canaanite dwelleth by the sea, and along by the side of the Jordan.'
They were
afraid of the giants. It never dawned on anybody that they need a small amount
of faith in HASHEM. They defeated Egypt without lifting a finger, and HASHEM
has the power to again raise up miracles for them.
30 And Caleb stilled the people toward Moses,
and said: 'We should go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to
overcome it.'
It is easy
with HASHEM backing us to overcome all obstacles.
31 But the men that went up with him said: 'We
are not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.' 32
And they spread an evil report of the land which they had spied out unto the
children of Israel, saying: 'The land, through which we have passed to spy it
out, is a land that eats up
the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of great
stature. 33 And there we saw the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, who come of the
Nephilim; and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their
sight.'
Grasshoppers in our sight and then they
projected it to “their sight”. With their fear and panic, they put fear Into
the majority of the nation.
14:1 And
all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that
night. 2 And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against
Aaron; and the whole congregation said unto them: 'Would that we had died in
the land of Egypt! or would we had died in this wilderness!
What
nonsensical talk of yellow-bellied runaway slaves. A free man does not talk
with such fear and cowardness.
3 And wherefore doth the LORD bring us unto
this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will be a prey;
were it not better for us to return into Egypt?'
All logic
and reason has been thrown out with the trash. Avraham, the foreigner (Ivri),
travelled the whole land. Yitzchak lived there and both were asked for treaties
and blessings by Avimelech and his army. Yacov and the tribes defeated as one
man aged 99 or 100 with teens and boys the Canaan Tribes attacking them. All
the more so an army of 600,000 plus men!
4 And they said one to another: 'Let us make a
captain, and let us return into Egypt.' 5 Then Moses and Aaron fell on their
faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.
Are you
that fearful? Why not stay in the wilderness as free men eating Mann and
drinking water? Why give up so easily on hearsay evidence to become slaves
again?
6 And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son
of Jephunneh, who were of them that spied out the land, rent their clothes.
They were
besides themselves. They were as if in mourning from such Lashon HaRa.
7 And they spoke unto all the congregation of
the children of Israel, saying: 'The land, which we passed through to spy it
out, is an exceeding good land. 8 If the LORD delight in us, then He will bring
us into this land, and give it unto us--a land which flows with milk and honey. 9 Only rebel
not against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread
for us; their defence is removed from over them, and the LORD is with us; fear
them not.'
They tried
to calm down the people but the panic had become a rout with nobody chasing
them. It was like the curse of Parsha Bechukosai.
10 But all the congregation bade stone them
with stones, when the glory of the LORD appeared in the tent of meeting unto
all the children of Israel.
They wanted
to stone the true messengers. Only when HASHEM in HIS GLORY came down upon the
tent, did they refrain from hurting the two righteous spies.
11 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'How long will
this people despise Me? and how long will they not believe in Me, for all the
signs which I have wrought among them? 12 I will smite them with the
pestilence, and destroy them, and will make of thee a nation greater and
mightier than they.'
This time,
the people out did themselves for it was the majority of people from the
majority of tribes. In incident with the Egel HaZahav (golden calf), it was
only a half percent of the people. Now it was an out and out panic by most of
the peoples.
13 And Moses said unto the LORD: 'When the
Egyptians shall hear--for Thou brought up this people in Thy might from among
them-- 14 they will say to the inhabitants of this land, who have heard that
Thou LORD art in the midst of this people; inasmuch as Thou LORD art seen face
to face, and Thy cloud stands over them, and Thou go before them, in a pillar of cloud
by day, and in a pillar of fire by night; 15 now if Thou shalt kill this people
as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of Thee will speak,
saying: 16 Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land
which He swore unto them, therefore He hath slain them in the wilderness.
If you kill
them, you will be making a Chillul HASHEM for the Goyim will say that YOU
failed to bring the people into the land as promised.
17 And now, I pray Thee, let the power of the
LORD be great, according as Thou hast spoken, saying: 18 The LORD is slow to anger, and
plenteous in lovingkindness, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and that
will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon
the children, upon the third and upon the fourth generation. 19 Pardon, I pray
Thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of Thy lovingkindness,
and according as Thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.'
YOU are a
slow suffering and forgiving G-D.
20 And the LORD said: 'I have pardoned
according to thy word.
For your
words and sake, I have pardoned the tribes.
21 But in very deed, as I live--and all the
earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD-- 22 surely all those men that
have seen My glory, and My signs, which I wrought in Egypt and in the
wilderness, yet have put Me to proof these ten times, and have not hearkened to
My voice; 23 surely, they shall not see the land which I swore unto their
fathers, neither shall any of them that despised Me see it. 24 But My servant
Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed Me fully, him
will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it.
They will
not see the land.
25 Now the Amalekite and the Canaanite dwell in
the Vale; tomorrow turn ye, and get you into the wilderness by the way to the
Red Sea.'
Instead of
entering Eretz Yisrael, you will wander the wilderness.
26 And the LORD spoke unto Moses and unto
Aaron, saying: 27 'How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, that keep
murmuring against Me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel,
which they keep murmuring against Me. 28 Say unto them: As I live, saith the
LORD, surely as ye have spoken in Mine ears, so will I do to you: 29 your
carcasses shall fall in this wilderness, and all that were numbered of you,
according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, ye that have
murmured against Me; 30 surely ye shall not come into the land, concerning
which I lifted up My hand that I would make you dwell therein, save Caleb the
son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.
Without except,
everybody who murmured against ME shall die in the wilderness except for these
two men.
31 But your little ones, that ye said would be
a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have
rejected. 32 But as for you, your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness. 33
And your children shall be wanderers in the wilderness forty years, and shall
bear your straying, until your carcasses be consumed in the wilderness. 34
After the number of the days in which ye spied out the land, even forty days,
for every day a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye
shall know My displeasure. 35 I the LORD have spoken, surely this will I do
unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against Me; in this
wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.'
40 days of
spying will become 40 years of wandering until all those who panicked will die
off and the generation of people born free shall take over.
36 And the men, whom Moses sent to spy out the
land, and who, when they returned, made all the congregation to murmur against
him, by bringing up an evil report against the land, 37 even those men that did
bring up an evil report of the land, died by the plague before the LORD. 38 But
Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, remained alive of those
men that went to spy out the land. 39 And Moses told these words unto all the
children of Israel; and the people mourned greatly. 40 And they rose up early
in the morning, and got them up to the top of the mountain, saying: 'Lo, we are
here, and will go up unto the place which the LORD hath promised; for we have
sinned.' 41 And Moses said: 'Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of
the LORD, seeing it shall not prosper? 42 Go not up, for the LORD is not among
you; that ye be not smitten down before your enemies. 43 For there the
Amalekite and the Canaanite are before you, and ye shall fall by the sword;
forasmuch as ye are turned back from following the LORD, and the LORD will not
be with you.'
Yoshua was
from the tribe of Ephraim and they listened to him and felt that they could
conquer. But if HASHEM does not guard a city, it is naught the cries of the
guardian.
(Tehillim
127:1)
44 But they presumed to go up to the top of the
mountain; nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and Moses, departed
not out of the camp. 45 Then the Amalekite and the Canaanite, who dwelt in that
hill-country, came down, and smote them and beat them down, even unto Hormah.
They became the dry bones in the valley
that Yechezkel described (Chapter 37).
As I
mentioned in Inyanay Diyoma, overweight me is doing dieting and intensive work
in the gym to lose weight without injections. So instead of commentating
through chapter 15:41 and glossing over it, I decided to continue with a
quality commentary next week.

problems described here apply in general to:
Baalei
Teshuva and Converts to Judaism
On the road
from nowhere to the road to somewhere
People who
are coming to Judaism from the outside don’t realize how difficult this is. It
is a combination of many factors. The first is the degree of observance. There
are both men and women who are Orthodox but want to cut corners. This is
perhaps a minimum amount of observance. As a Baal Teshuva (born again) Jew just
to barely squeak through in observance that perhaps is fine for starters. As I
wrote, I did not know if my very strict observant friend who told me not to
turn on or off the lights on Shabbos was putting an extra Chumra (guard or
fence) around the Torah or it was really forbidden. It was my more religiously
liberal friend who told me that it was forbidden so it was really forbidden.
In general,
I wanted to have a special level of Kosher. My Kashrus on dishes included milk,
and meat set of two for me and a guest, a pot and pan for both and Pareve or
Neutral set for fruits, vegetables and fish that I could eat with either.
One funny
Kashrus incident occurred in 1969 (5729). In 1968 (5728) before my “Bar
Mitzvah” that I was told was not necessary at 21, I wanted to do it like I
wanted to pass the test to be a Rabbi. It was the fact that I was coming from
nowhere. I was still at that time close to observing Shabbos, but I still
travelled of Shabbos and Yom Tov. Although perhaps I should have been stricter
with myself, I found in the course of experience that those who observed
Mitzvos too fast became over-whelmed and often dumped every gain. While like
the tortoise, slowly but surely wins the race.
In 5728, I
was invited to be at Rabbi Klayman’s for the Seder. There was a Lunar Eclipse
that night and his son took out a small hand-held telescope to watch the shadow
of the earth advance over the moon. From there I learned that a mechanical
telescope is permissible to use on Shabbos/Yom Tov.
In 5729, I
was invited to the Bostoner Rebbe for Pesach and then the complete observance
confusion set in. He held by Ayn Gebrokts [The practice of not letting water
touch the Matzah until the 8th day]. This means no Matzah Balls
until the 8th day. I had not the Jewish Maturity or background to
know the difference between Halacha (no leavening) and no Gebrokts (wetting).
The first is Halacha from the days of Moshe in the Torah and the second an
Eastern European Custom. It took a week to straighten me out and in the end my
mother reminded me that at home after I learned about Pesach that she had made
Matzah Balls for me. I personally recommend to those who are Baalei Teshuva not
to take on extra-burden Minchagim unless it is a woman marrying into a family
that has such a custom.
I tried my
best to-D observe family purity, but instead a Reform or Conservative Jewish
Girl, I ended up with non-Jewish girls. They were believers in G -D. Not
exactly 100% like a Jew. However, none was really interested in conversion and
in reality, Jews don’t look for converts.
There was a
friend of my mother’s who tried to set me up with some of the girls from the
German – Jewish Community that had a similar world-view as my family origin
after leaving Spain was German-Czech-Slovak-Austrian Empire and Italy. However,
I was far from a Talmud Chacham and some were more mature than my 21year old
self even if they were the same age.
Then there
was a name of a young woman given to me by a friend who dated her. I called her
up and although I never ever took a psychology course in my life, I could tell
within 5 minutes that she was completely out of her mind.
Then there
was the more liberal modern Orthodox girls. Some were with miniskirts that
violated the Halachic Guidelines of HaRav HaGaon Moshe Feinstein, who was the
true leader of Torah Judaism then. Still there were some that I could relate
too. The more Charedi Women were looking for a Talmud Chacham not a potential
Rabbi Pauli who would out do many of the Charedim in certain aspects of Torah
in the next 58 years but back then Rachamim was a nobody in kinetic Torah
Judaism just a burning passion for Torah, Zohar, Talmud and Halacha. Just now,
with the completion of the Shulchan Aruch, can I truly say that I have become a
Shulchan Aruch Yid along with the Dayan Rabbi Shlomo Mimran Shlita. There was one
lovely girl, whom I liked, and she wanted a fellow learning in Lakewood.
Perhaps had I pulled off a Hillel on the roof in the snow or a Rabbi Akiva, I
could have weaseled my way into Lakewood. But that was not to be.
Rebbitzen
Sorcher of blessed memory set me up with a cousin of hers. The girl was
pleasant to look at, very Frum, intelligent and had similar ideas to me. The
problem was that a more Mature Rachamim could live with such a woman until
120years but there was no great infatuation over her at 21 to 22.
There was
one Baal Teshuva who wanted to learn and looked up to me as a prince in shining
armor. I over-looked her lack of education, inability to hold a job or complete
her studies. I put Shabbos and Kashrus and her zeal over anything else. She was
18 and I was 22. In the States, things were cheap then and on a beginner’s
salary I could rent, afford food and clothing and even save a few dollars a
week.
We married
and a few years later in Israel, she met some of her friends from camp. One of
the young women said, Katie F. married a Baal Teshuva but what a Baal Teshuva
implying negative things on all Baalei Teshuva.
There was a
gathering of Agudas Yisrael in Israel. There was a section for those who
learned but I could not attend and Motzei Shabbos for Baalei Teshuva. I hit the
ceiling! What Motzei Shabbos is for zoo creatures. I never attended even though
I could have.
Today, I
hold my own with many Rabbanim but rarely speak in public because of the energy
involved. But I can never ever forget the second-tier status the Charedi World
showed to the Baalei Teshuva.
In
conclusion, like Avraham the Ivri (from across the river/other side of the
tracks), Rabbi Akiva, the boor and Am Haaretz (like a Hill Billy Jew), so there
was I. I became a Talmud Chacham not because of them but in spite of them. It
took people like The Rabbis London Brothers, Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Noach
Weinberg and a few dozen others who gave us a chance that thousands of people
accomplished a born-again Jewish Revolution of the last 70 to 80* years first
in a trickle and now by the Sephardim and Yemenite Rabbis.
*The Rabbis
London started in the late 1940’s or early 1950’s and some of the older
students from Haichal HaTorah in NY were between 20 to 30 years older than I.
My late friend, Nathan Applebaum, finished his tour of duty in World War II
went on to classes in Judaism in the Young Israel and although he worked full
time in the post office, produced a few generations of Torah Observant Jews and
scholars. Rabbi Dov Zvi Korrolenstein, Rosh Yeshiva Grodno in Ashdod had the
greatest respect Yacov Glicksman and
myself, who came from nothing in Judaism, worked over-time, raised a Frum
Family and learned what we could grab in our spare time.
No matter
how hard one’s life is or the suffering/trials of a Baal Teshuva or Ger Tzedek,
perhaps Rabbi Noach Weinberg’s last words in his bout with cancer says it all.
His son-in-law asked, if you are suffering so much how can you think everything
is love from G-D. Rav Noach said giving him a bit of a light slap on the face:
“Fool! It is all love!”
Life in a Dark Damp American Cellar by Rabbi

A man named Moshe Goldman came to America with his family from Europe in
the early 1900's, looking for a better life. He was told it would be difficult
religiously, as most businesses were open on Shabbat. Nevertheless, he and his
wife made a commitment to stay loyal to Shabbat no matter what.
Sure enough, when he told his first boss that he wouldn't be coming in on
Saturday, he was given a pink slip, and this pattern continued week after week.
Goldman had a very difficult time earning a living, but his commitment to
Shabbat was unwavering.
One day, Goldman came home to his Lower East Side apartment, crushed by
the burden of another futile job interview, to find an eviction notice lying on
the floor. He was more than three months behind with the rent.
He turned around and went to plead with his landlord, Mr. Wells, for an
extension. The latter, however, claimed that he needed the money, and there was
someone else willing to rent the apartment.
Fortunately, Mr. Wells was not a heartless person. Out of compassion, he
told Goldman he would allow the family to remain in the building, so long as
they would be willing to move into the cellar.
Their new "appartment" was actually
the building's coal room. It was dark and damp, and thick black soot permeated
the entire room, it was free; so they accepted it.
Weeks passed. One day, a wealthy businessman, Mark Bookman, was driving
through that neighborhood and was astonished to see two boys with black faces
wearing yarmulkes (kipot). He instructed his driver to pull over and stepped
out for a closer look.
What he discovered was that they were two fair colored, young Jewish boys
who were covered in black soot. He inquired about the soot, and the boys
described their heartbreaking living conditions.
Mr. Bookman then asked the boys to show him where they lived, and he
followed them to their apartment. When their mother opened the door and saw the
distinguished guest, she was completely embarrassed.
Mr. Bookman though, seeing the pitiful situation, was overcome with
compassion and wrote them a check for $5000 (an enormous amount of money in
those days1 ). It was enough to support their entire family for several years.
As she thanked the man, Mrs. Goldman was overcome with joy; this was the
answer to all of her prayers. When her husband, Moshe, returned, she told him
the good news. His response shocked and dismayed her: "We cannot accept
this money!"
"Why not?" she cried out, "He really wanted to give it to
us."
"I know Mark Bookman," said Moshe gently. "He desecrates
Shabbos. His business continues to operate on Saturdays, and Jews work there.
We didn't sacrifice to observe Shabbat for the last two years to be rescued
financially by someone who desecrates it."
Early the next morning, Moshe went to Mr. Bookman's sweater factory to
return the check. He said that he was extremely grateful for the gesture, but
nevertheless he could not accept it.
When he explained why, Mr Bookman stood dumbfounded, unable to utter a
word, and when he returned home that night, his wife could see that he looked
very disturbed. She asked what was wrong.
"I can't believe he didn't take the money," he told her, as he
began to describe the events that had taken place.
Then he became teary eyed as he reminisced. "We used to be like that.
Don't you remember? We also treasured Shabbat, until one week, when business
was so awful, and we were short on money, we said, we're going to leave the
store open on Shabbat. 'Just this one time,' we said. And then,
…"
Tears streaked down his cheeks as he recalled that day ten years ago.
"I want that passion back," he said. "I want to be a committed
Jew also."
Right then and there, they accepted upon themselves to be Shomer Shabbos
again. That Friday, an hour before sunset, Mr. Bookman entered his factory and
proudly told all the workers, the factory will be closing for Shabbat. When he
arrived home on Friday afternoon and watched his wife lighting the Shabbat
candles for the first time in ten years, he felt like he had returned home from
a very long journey.
The next week, he went back to Moshe Goldman and offered him the check
again. This time, he explained how inspired he was from his loyalty to Shabbat,
and that he had resolved to keep it from now on.
Moshe and his wife felt both happy and proud, as well as relieved to be
free of their financial troubles, and Mr. Bookman merited to have religious
grandchildren and great-grandchildren to this very day.

There's a famous saying that goes..."As much as the Jews kept Shabbat, the
Shabbat kept the Jews!" The Shabbos that we keep today and that we kept
throughout the generations is the secret that has kept the Jewish people alive
and our continuity everlasting as a great nation until this very day.
May we all learn to appreciate the Shabbat and keep it to the highest standards
that we possibly can, because it is the true source of all our blessings.
May we also be able to see the rewards and fruits of our observance through the
Shabbatot we enjoy with our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Why This Week? Towards the end of the Torah Portion, Shelach -- studied
and read publically this week in Israel, but not till next week outside of
Israel - we learn the seriousness of the intentional violation with full
