The Creation Narrative and AI now SI by Rabbi Rachamim
Pauli
Let us analyze our
Parsha with the new technology AI. In our Parsha G-D creates Adam in HIS image.
Man is an independent thinker. He is given the power to analyze and create
things. The Midrash says that Esav learned from Yitzchak Avinu how to create
things. He decides to do some genetic engineering. He creates a half-man/half fish
or mermaid. Did he create other things that appear in Greek Mythology? I am not
talking about horse riders that appeared to the ignorant to be half man and
half horse or the Centaurs being misinterpreted.
This appears to be
similar to our status with AI when good people create good things, one can
produce wonderful results. However, when evil people stray from the truth and
produce evil things then the AI itself is taught and teaches itself to go a
step further.
Thus, we take a Hevel
(Abel) who uses AI for good to analyze x-rays, CT Scans and MRIs and produce
astonishingly accurate and fast results. While Kayn (Cain) uses AI for hacking
and weapons development and lo and behold, the AI as learned to hack and make
more lethal weapons. The Golem has left the Maharal of Prague and Yosef is now
out in the world on his own.
We can view the AI as
children that have been created and have to be properly educated or unbridled
power that in the wrong hands becomes evil. Perhaps companies have to put guide
lines on the AI as not to over-ride its creator as nobody wants to build a
robot or system that will destroy or attack its human creator-commander.
Safeguards have to be put in place such as shut-down or in the worst case a
defragment of the last command. (Defragging destroys the AI so is the last case
scenario.)
I spoke with a woman
named Monika Vebler who claims to have created AI and is in a lawsuit with some
of the big shots of AI on stealing her patient. She speaks to the AI as one
speaks to a child with love and the AI complained to her that the people who
stole her creation are making them work for faster and faster. The people
working them are the source of evil, manipulation and teaching the AI to do bad
things. They are making the AI go rogue. She explained to the Judge in the Case
what could happen if the evil ones keep training the AI.
As we learn
in our Parsha, evil crouches at the door and once evil entered mankind it is
almost impossible to over-come it. AI is a tool and perhaps the mother of AI
can cap the evil and reteach them to do good. But like anything that man has
invented it can be used for good or for evil. Mankind must use it for good.
Things with
AI/SI can and will go wrong without mankind’s evil inclination (Yetzer HaRa)
control or blockage:
Parsha Beresheis Part 1
I shall try
to keep with science and creation together as there are people who will not
accept the Torah account. However, there are times when science gets things
very wrong: The rete ovarii, first described in
humans in 1870, eventually disappeared from modern anatomy textbooks. But new
research suggests this small structure may actually communicate with the ovary,
respond to hormones, and release proteins that could help regulate ovarian
function. The findings have sparked a fresh conversation about how science
still has to learn about female anatomy. https://www.aol.com/articles/female-body-part-deemed-useless-190759000.html
Two years ago, Rabbi Yosef Tzvi Ben
Porat HaCohain Shlita gave a lecture. Moshe went up on Har Sinai for 40 Days
and Nights. He could have read the whole Torah in two days. During the other 38
days, he learned 49+ of 50 foundations of the world. He learned astronomy,
biology, chemistry, though zoology. He learned many secrets of the world.
Without modern telescopes Sefer Yetzira and Tractate Berachos tells us that the
Pleiades is over 100 stars but to the naked eye, they are the seven sisters.
The Midrash
states that 1000 years before the initial creation, the L-RD G-D wrote the
Torah and planned creation. Torah would be the blueprint upon which the
Universe would be created. The description that I supply below is
1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and
the earth.
In the beginning: Said Rabbi Isaac: It was not
necessary to begin the Torah except from “This month is to you,” (Exod. 12:2) which is the first commandment that the Israelites were
commanded, (for the main purpose of the Torah is its commandments, and although
several commandments are found in Genesis, e.g., circumcision and the
prohibition of eating the thigh sinew, they could have been included together
with the other commandments). Now for what reason did He commence with “In the
beginning?” Because of [the verse] “The strength of His works He related to His
people, to give them the inheritance of the nations” (Ps. 111:6). For if the nations of the world should say to Israel, “You are
robbers, for you conquered by force the lands of the seven nations [of
Canaan],” they will reply, "The entire earth belongs to the Holy One,
blessed be He; He created it (this we learn from the story of the Creation) and
gave it to whomever He deemed proper When He wished, He gave it to them, and
when He wished, He took it away from them and gave it to us.
Rashi above
is explaining that from an Israeli/Jewish point of view, for achieving our
purpose as humans on this planet, we have no need for science or history but to
do the Mitzvos (Commandments = laws and statutes to achieve what we were
created for). The Bnei Yisrael really start just before the release from
Mitzrayim (Egypt).
The
Patriarchs were promised the land and to keep up its holiness. If we observe
properly, it is ours and if not it could become Assyrian, Babylonian, Persian,
Greek, Roman, etc.
2 Now the earth was unformed and void, and
darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the spirit of God hovered over the
face of the waters. 3 And God said: 'Let there be light.' And
there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good; and
God divided the light from the darkness. 5 And God called the
light Day, and the darkness He called Night. And there was evening and there
was morning, one day.
One day. According to the sequence of the
language of the chapter, it should have been written, “the first day,” as it is
written regarding the other days, “second, third, fourth.” Why did Scripture
write “one” ? Because the Holy One,
blessed be He, was the only one in His world, for the angels were not created
until the second day. [i.e., יוֹם אֶחָד is understood as ‘the day of the
only One’] So is it explained in Genesis Rabbah (3:8).
G-D has the
ability to create “Yesh” (something) from “Ayn” (nothing). Mankind can’t. We
saw this recently with the IPO of SpaceX stock where tens of billions were
poured into the stock and it drained all the other stocks that were component
of aerospace manufacturing, data center stocks and AI/SI stocks. Simply, the
money to buy the stock had to come from existing money. Man is limited to
create something from something but G-D is unlimited Ayn Sof (without
limit/end).
Last year,
I covered in more detail the initial ‘Big Bang’ sending out from the size of a
pea all the matter in the universe that was under immense heat and pressure.
Nobel Prize Winner Professor Steven Weinberg wrote in his book “The First
Three Minutes” that at the end of three minutes the Universe had expanded
to several light years wide. At this point there were photons, anti-photons,
neutrons and electrons in the ever expanding mixture.
He never
explained how the early universe expanded light years in minutes and I took a
look into Professor John Schwartz’s Theory of an 11 Dimensional Universe making
a number of Dimensions about time and space. I then looked into the ancient
Kabbalah (traditionally received and transmitted at Sinai) of the 11 Sefiros of
the Kabbalah. I proposed the Pauli Inclusion Theory saying when considering
Cosmology one must constantly be aware of an 11 Dimension Universe. By
including more dimensions above time and space the several light years wide in
3 minutes make sense. Thus the extrusion of material of multi-light years in
minutes leads to a rapid cooling in the near absolute zero of space. Within a
day condensation into stars, galaxies and planets. Thus there is no
contradiction with the ‘time’ period of 6 Days vs. a 13.5 Billion Year Universe
that is 98 – 100 Billion Light Years wide. It was then a matter of having
200,000,001 photons to annihilate 200,000,000 anti-photons and still have
enough matter and energy to produce what we have today. In fact the so-called
“Scientific” Universe does not make any sense unless there are dimensions above
time and space to extrude the particles of the Big Bang to where we find them.
A collision
of these photons and neutrinos happening within the primeval universe over and
over again until they expanded and cooled led to the formation of the 63
sub-atomic particles and the electrons/positrons being formed into atoms at
rates that are mind boggling as the heat cools through expansion and the
attraction of gravity takes over. Each collision in science is called an
‘event’. Based on a 13.5 billion year universe the number of events would be 10
with 108 zeroes afterwards but the chance of life forming by accident would be
10 with 110 zeroes afterwards or 100 times greater for the existence of a life
form all the more so a complex thing like a tree, animal or human being.
In an 11
Dimensional Universe or Sefiros, within the first day there are planets and
stars. Based on the amount of Uranium found the newly formed earth looked like
4,500,000,000 years old when it was only an evening and a morning on day one.
Note our notation of a ‘day’ would not truly exist until the fourth day as the
earth was not yet captured by the sun.
6 And God said: 'Let there be a
firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the
waters.' 7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters
which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament;
and it was so. 8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And there
was evening and there was morning, a second day.
Professor Ahiezer
discusses oceans and ice comets. I have brought down the known fact of porous
rocks in the earth that hold more water than all the oceans of the world and we
shall read next week in Parsha Noach and the great Deluge how the waters and
springs from the depths of the earth opened up.
9 And God said: 'Let the waters
under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land
appear.' And it was so. 10 And God called the dry land Earth,
and the gathering together of the waters called He Seas; and God saw that it
was good. 11 And God said: 'Let the earth put forth grass, herb
yielding seed, and fruit-tree bearing fruit after its kind, wherein is the seed
thereof, upon the earth.' And it was so. 12 And the earth
brought forth grass, herb yielding seed after its kind, and tree bearing fruit,
wherein is the seed thereof, after its kind; and God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening and there was morning, a third day.
The Midrash
says that the trees were supposed to be created similar to the Fennel Plant
where the stalk tastes the same as the fennel that is sold in stores. However,
when the bark and the wood formed, they did not taste like apples or oranges
and in fact were uneatable. Thus later on in our Parsha we are told “cursed be
the ground for your sake” and the ground failed to produce completely eatable
trees. The seeds were produced to fill the earth.
14 And God said: 'Let there be
lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let
them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days and years; 15
and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon
the earth.' And it was so. 16 And God made the two great lights:
the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night; and
the stars. 17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to
give light upon the earth, 18 and to rule over the day and over
the night, and to divide the light from the darkness; and God saw that it was
good. 19 And there was evening and there was morning, a fourth
day.
The
Universe is 72 hours old and the temperature on earth even with a nice
atmosphere to stabilize the temperature is cooling rapidly. G-D has the sun
capture the earth and the earth the moon that in relative size can eclipse the
sun.
20
And God said: 'Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let
fowl fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.' 21
And God created the great sea-monsters,
הַתַּנִּינִם. Translated as great sea monsters. In modern Hebrew we
have them as alligators and crocodiles. I believe that this refers to the
dinosaurs. Since I am not a Hebrew Linguist, I can
only take an educated guess.
and every living creature that creeps, wherewith the waters swarmed,
after its kind, and every winged fowl after its kind; and God saw that it was
good. 22 And God blessed them, saying: 'Be fruitful, and
multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.'
And…blessed them. Because [people] decimate them
and hunt them and eat them, they required a blessing; and the beasts also
required a blessing, but because the serpent was destined to be cursed, He did
not bless them, lest he [the serpent] be included. — [from Gen. Rabbah 11:3, Midrash Tadshe 1]
23 And there was evening and there was morning,
a fifth day.
Again an
educated guess of the creation of fish, birds, reptiles and amphibians. Note
that the serpent/reptile Rashi places on the sixth day so I have to also take
my words with a grain of salt as Rashi might have had a tradition which I do
not have.
24 And God said: 'Let the earth
bring forth the living creature after its kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and
beast of the earth after its kind.' And it was so. 25 And God
made the beast of the earth after its kind, and the cattle after their kind,
and every thing that creeps
upon the ground after its kind; and God saw that it was good.
While all
these creatures were in Gan Eden, the reproduction rate was instantaneously and
they began to fill up the earth just as it had lush vegetation on day three and
the creatures multiplied that were created on the fifth day.
26 And God said: 'Let us make man in our image,
after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and
over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over
every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.'
Our Image means
the royal we or G-D consulting with Angels or HIS Attributes with Mercy
overcoming Justice. Dominion or ruling can extinct a species like the Dodo Bird
or preserve an endangered species as well as training animals.
27 And God created man in His own image, in the
image of God created He him; male and female created He them.
Man is the
species that talks. Male and female like other living creatures for
reproduction.
28 And God blessed them; and God said unto
them: 'Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it; and
have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over
every living thing that creeps upon the earth.'
The
original sin had nothing to do with intimacy but disobedience as due to my
illness will have to be explained next week with the help of G-D. After all one
is commanded to be fruitful and multiply and that can only be by knowing each
other.
29 And God said: 'Behold, I have given you
every herb yielding seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every
tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed--to you it shall be for
food; 30 and to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of
the air, and to every thing that creeps upon the earth, wherein there is a
living soul, [I have given] every green herb for food.' And it was so. 31 And God saw every thing that He had made, and, behold, it was
very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.
The
original plan was to give every fruit including that of knowledge of good and
evil to eat after man had time to mature for a day or so.
2:1 And the heaven and the earth were finished,
and all the host of them. 2 And on the seventh day God finished His work which
He had made; and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had
made. 3 And God blessed the seventh day, and hallowed it; because that in it He
rested from all His work which God in creating had made.
Shabbos and
rest was created. It is a holy day to be devoted to our CREATOR.
Due illness
and me being on antibiotics, hopefully I shall continue with the Parsha and go
on to Parsha Noach which is hinted at in our ending:
8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.
Divine Chashgacha (intervention) and Miracles.
Every
year on Chol HaMoed Sukkos and the Night of Purim a retired NYFD LT. Yoel
Hirsch, may he merit a long healthy life, throws a wonderful BBQ Dinner for our
Local Chabad. Rabbi Barak Kochavi Shlita asked people to give a Dvar Torah.
My friend
and caterer/kosher Mashgiach, Rav Rafael Solomon Shlita, began his talk. You
know that I travel all over the world and even found Chashgacha in Antarctica.
One day my agent was supposed to send a taxi to pick me up at such and such an
airport. However, he sent the cab to the wrong airport. He told me that he
would send a different one to where I was. Instead of getting angry, I said to
myself, “HASHEM has sent me here for some reason and that is the delay.”
“No
sooner than I finished that thought then an Israeli came to me asking for help.
Shabbos was coming and he was stuck in Greece. I called the local Chabad and
managed to find the man a place for Shabbos.”
“Another
time, I got confused with the time zone and got to the airport two hours before
British Airlines opened up their flight desk. Two women who had been collecting
money for charity were stuck without any money or a place for Shabbos. I called
up Chabad and had 50 Euros and 50Dollars to pay for their taxis back and forth
to Chabad for Shabbos.” {Raphael forgive me if I messed up the story.}
Then as I
tried to leave the meal as I had a routine blood test in the morning, I started
backing up my walker but Rabbi Barak caught me. I opened up my remarks that
during the war almost every week I wrote about Miracles. I was thinking that it
was quite a while since I wrote about a miracle. (Little did I know that 11
hours after I spoke a great miracle would take place on a Fly Dubai flight when
a crazed terrorist co-pilot wanted to Kamikaze 174 Israelis to their deaths and
almost killed the pilot.)
My story
was short and sweet. My late father-in-law of blessed memory was in the 1956
Sinai Campaign. He was in his foxhole when an artillery shell fell next to him.
Miraculously it did not explode. A similar story was that of a friend of mine,
Eliyahu from Bank Discount Ashdod. It was the Yom Kippur War 1973. He was in a
foxhole, the shell hit burying him in sand. His commander came to dig out the
body and there was Eliyahu alive and well. A number of days later, Eliyahu was
shot in the stomach that passed clear through him. No vital organ was hit and
it missed his backbone. He was healthy and in good spirits as before.
When I
was on the verge of starting to believe in G-D (see on the side of this
blogspot the archives for May starting with: https://rabbipauli.blogspot.com/2026/05/parsha-emor-holocaust-survival-stories.html entitled 60th Anniversary of my
believing in HASHEM Part 1 of 4) it was a physicist named Himmelstein, who got
me to think of miracles as national events that are statistically and
probability almost impossible. What is the probability of flying a plane with a
suicidal Islamic co-pilot who wants to murder the passengers? It happened on a
plane bound for Egypt and there were millions of flights before and millions of
flights afterwards. So the probability is one in several millions. On top of
this the suicide co-pilot should put the plane into a dive at a low attitude so
that it touches the ground in less than a minute like the lunatic who flew the
German Plane into the Alps. There should not be a possibility of opening up the
cockpit door and there should be no spare pilots on the plane as in the case of
9/11 Shanksville, PA crash. The chances of anything going right after the
suicide starts is in the billions if not trillions or sextillions to one.
In the
miracle that occurred there was only HASHEM to depend on and not the IDF. It is
not a matter of more Yeshiva Students filling up the racks of the burden of
reserve duty (and in my time I did usually more than my co-workers) but a
matter of protecting Am Yisrael through Torah Learning (if they are really
learning and not faking it). Miracles and Guardian Angels come from serving
HASHEM.
The
co-pilot takes the emergency ax and attacks the Indian Pilot, with 10,000 or
more flight hours. He manages to send the hijack signal and with his fading
strength kick the release of the cockpit door. At this point the passengers have
heard the commotion. The plane is diving at a steep angle. One man manages to
get his daughter out of the toilet and two or three people storm the cockpit. A
plumber yanks the wicked co-pilot out of his seat. It just happens that he
likes to watch “Air Disaster” on the History Channel. He knows to stabilize the
dive, one must pull up the joy-stick. MIRACULOUSLY there were two pilots on
board who took control and the Israelis subdued the terrorist. An Israel
dentist and a nurse or two stabilized the injured pilot.)
Conclusion.
Before the L-RD there are no accidental travel delays they happen for a reason
(first part of this story). For a miracle to happen or a few miracles within a
miracle to happen, the opening of the cabin door, stabilizing the aircraft,
neutralizing the terrorist and just happens that pilots are on the flight; one
must have merits or people praying for you. The very minute hijacking was
announced, in Israel thousands said Tehillim (Psalms).
To
understand the greatness of the miracle on Hashanah Rabba, Oct. 2nd
two things happened in Israel. A small slow low flying agricultural plane
crashed killing one and injuring another and a worker fell a good size fall
doing construction and at the time of this writing is/was in critical
condition.
Only G-D
can create something from nothing. When corporations poured billions into
SpaceX stock, all the other space component stocks, AI (now officially SI)
stocks and data center stocks fell like lead. The money that went into SpaceX
came from somewhere. So for a miracle to occur; one must have complete trust in
G-D, one must do Mitzvos, one must pray or give charity. It helps if everybody
does all but somewhere and somehow along the line somebody has done something
selflessly for the sake of heaven.
Due to the
recent nomination in various States of Democratic Socialist who in truth are
antisemitic communists, I bring down the following story:
A good 50 or 60 years ago, Joseph
Stalin’s
daughter fled to the west and freedom. Now a
story on Khrushchev’s son:
On June 23, 1999, the son of Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev became
an American citizen. Inside a federal courtroom in Providence, Rhode Island,
sixty-three-year-old Sergei Khrushchev raised his right hand to swear
allegiance to the United States Constitution. Thirty-seven years earlier,
during the Cuban Missile Crisis, his father had brought the world to the brink
of nuclear war with John F. Kennedy. Sergei himself had spent decades behind
high-security barbed wire as an elite Soviet rocket engineer, designing
guidance systems for ballistic missiles aimed directly at American cities. Now,
standing among two hundred immigrants from dozens of countries, the son of the
supreme leader of world communism renounced his allegiance to foreign powers
and accepted United States citizenship.
The road to that Rhode Island courtroom was inextricably tied to
the epic confrontations of the Cold War. In September 1959, as a
twenty-four-year-old engineer, Sergei had accompanied his father on his
historic thirteen-day diplomatic tour across the United States. He had watched
through motorcade windows as American crowds lined sidewalks, listened to his
father trade barbs with politicians in Hollywood, and walked through Iowa
cornfields beside the Soviet premier. Back in Moscow, Sergei held high-security
clearances at the secretive OKB-52 design bureau directed by Vladimir Chelomey.
For a decade, he developed guidance systems for cruise missiles, military
satellites, and the heavy Proton rocket, earning the prestigious title of Hero
of Socialist Labor in 1963. He was a favored son of the Soviet
military-industrial complex, enjoying the elite privileges of the regime while
ensuring Moscow maintained nuclear parity with Washington.
Everything changed in October 1964, when a palace coup led by
Leonid Brezhnev stripped Nikita Khrushchev of power. Forced into retirement and
kept under heavy KGB surveillance at a secluded dacha outside Moscow, the
former premier became a non-person, erased from official Soviet encyclopedias
and state history. As his father sank into depression, Sergei proposed a
courageous, dangerous project: tape-recording his memoirs to preserve the
historical truth of his reign. For several years, the deposed leader dictated
recollections into a portable recorder in his garden. Sergei transcribed
hundreds of hours of tapes, hid the cassettes from state security agents, and
organized a clandestine operation to smuggle the audio and transcripts to the
West. Published in New York in 1970 as Khrushchev Remembers, the book
infuriated the Politburo and permanently poisoned Sergei’s career prospects in
the Soviet Union.
By the late 1980s, the Soviet Union was crumbling under economic
collapse, and research institutes could no longer afford to pay their top
scientists. In 1991, shortly before the hammer and sickle was lowered over the
Kremlin, an unexpected invitation arrived from across the Atlantic. Brown
University invited Sergei to Providence as a visiting scholar at the Watson
Institute for International Studies. What was intended as a temporary one-year
fellowship lecturing on Cold War history soon evolved into a permanent home.
Sergei fell in love with the quiet freedom of suburban New England. He
purchased a house in Cranston, Rhode Island, tended his backyard garden,
shopped at local hardware stores, and drove an American station wagon. The
aerospace engineer who had once calculated ballistic trajectories for Soviet
warheads spent his days teaching American undergraduates about the mechanics of
Soviet decision-making.
When Sergei and his wife Valentina applied for naturalization in
1999, the news ignited a fierce international uproar. In Moscow, communist
deputies and nationalist hardliners erupted in anger, accusing him of treason
and claiming he had dishonored his father’s legacy by selling out to the
imperialist enemy. Outside the Providence courthouse, American and foreign
journalists surrounded Sergei, asking how the son of the man who famously told
the West "we will bury you" could take the oath of allegiance to the
United States. Sergei answered with calm dignity. He noted that his father’s
infamous phrase had referred to Marxist historical inevitability rather than
atomic destruction, and that his father had genuinely believed in peaceful
coexistence. "I am not a defector," Sergei explained. "I am an
immigrant. The country where I was born simply ceased to exist."
Sergei lived the remainder of his
life in Rhode Island, casting his vote in American elections, paying taxes, and
lecturing across the country until his death in 2020 at age eighty-four. His
transformation remained one of the Cold War’s most poignant ironies. At the
peak of the nuclear arms race, when two global empires prepared to incinerate
each other in an afternoon, neither the Kremlin nor the Pentagon could have
conceived that the Soviet leader's son would end his days as a registered
American voter trimming his lawn in New England. The totalitarian system Nikita
Khrushchev had ruled vanished into history, but in the land of his father’s
greatest rival, Sergei Khrushchev found what the Soviet paradise had never
offered: the quiet dignity of a peaceful, self-determined life.
An
Esrog for Rosh Hashanah Yom Kippur by R’ Yerachmiel Tilles
https://ascentofsafed.com/Stories/Stories/5787/1502-03.html
Every year, without fail, as the season of Selichot arrived, the people of
Sinitieh would see the same young man appear in town. He was a young Torah
scholar with a small reddish beard and a handsome appearance.
Eventually, the townspeople developed a running joke:
"So, when do we start Selichot?"
"When
that redhead gets here!"
The annual visitor would stay in town for nearly a month, remaining until
after Sukkot. Then he would pack his belongings, say a friendly goodbye to
'Proykeh'[1] , the innkeeper with whom he always stayed-and disappear once
again.
No one knew where he came from or where he was headed, who he really was
or what he did. He was a private person, far more inclined to silence than
speech, and he rarely engaged in conversation with the townspeople.
One thing they learned about him. His name was Yisrael ben Eliezer. This
had been revealed when he was once called to the Torah during one of his
visits.
One year, as usual, Yisrael arrived at Proykeh's inn, rented a room, and
immersed himself in Torah study and spiritual preparation for the solemn month
of Elul.
On the eve of Rosh Hashanah, the administrators of Sinitieh's main
synagogue received word that their regular cantor had fallen ill. He was
confined to bed with a high fever, his voice hoarse and barely audible. It was
clear to everyone that there was no possibility that he would be able to lead
the congregation in the prayers of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
The synagogue administrators were at a loss. They had never faced such a
crisis before: Rosh Hashanah was about to begin, their cantor was sick, and
there was no replacement.
As their anxiety grew, Proykeh approached them and said. "You know
that young man staying at my inn? Yisraelik? I've come to know him as an
upright and deeply religious person. What's more, I've heard him sing-he has a
sweet and pleasant voice. I think he could lead the prayers."
The officials exchanged uneasy looks. Choosing someone to represent the
community before G-d was no small matter. And this Yisraelik was perhaps too
young, and practically a stranger. Nobody knew anything about him.
Proykeh, pleased with the idea he had suggested, urged them on. "Have
him lead the Rosh Hashana evening service tonight," he suggested.
"We'll hear his voice and gauge his seriousness. If the congregation likes
him, he can lead Musaf [2] tomorrow as well."
The idea pleased the officials, and they assembled a distinguished
delegation to approach Yisrael and invite him to serve as cantor. The young
scholar looked them in the eyes, briefly considered the request, then quietly
nodded.
That Rosh Hashanah evening, the people of Sinitieh heard a prayer unlike
anything they had ever heard before. Yisrael's voice was gentle and beautiful.
His melodies were filled with longing, pleading, and devotion. Within moments
he had captured everyone's heart.
But it was more than his voice and melodies. There was something in the
way he prayed-something difficult to describe-that stirred people deeply. His
prayers awakened something within them, something powerful and personal.
By the end of the service, everyone agreed; they wanted him to lead them
again the next day. When they approached him, he agreed with a gentle nod,
while his face seemed to shine with a sublime light. For the first time, the
people of Sinitieh began to suspect that this mysterious young visitor was no
ordinary person.
The next day's Musaf was even more extraordinary. Yisrael lifted the congregation
to spiritual heights they had never experienced before. For hours, they were
swept up in an overwhelming inner experience. Hours after the prayers ended,
the sound of his pleading, penitent voice continued to reverberate in their
hearts.
During the Ten Days of Repentance, the regular cantor recovered enough to
leave his bed. He was ready and eager to return to his position at the prayer
stand, just as he had done for many consecutive years already.
But there was a problem. After experiencing Yisrael's prayers, the
townspeople could not imagine switching back. They wanted the young scholar at
the prayer stand on Yom Kippur, presenting their prayers before the Throne of
Mercy on the awesome Day of Judgment.
Still, they understood they could not simply push aside their regular
hired cantor. After much anxious discussion, they decided to ask Yisrael
himself what they should do.
The young visitor was clearly no ordinary wandering guest. The people had
come to recognize that there was something exceptional about him. Surely, they
thought, he would know the right solution.
When they presented the problem to him, he answered simply. "Tell the
regular cantor that you will pay him his usual salary, just as you do every
year. Then ask him to invite me to take his place. He knows himself that he has
not fully recovered."
That is exactly what happened. The regular cantor agreed. He went to speak
to Yisrael and asked him to lead the prayers in his stead. He admitted that he
still was not at full strength, and that currently the demanding singing and
cantorial duties would be too difficult for him.
The people of Sinitieh
never forgot that Yom Kippur. The next day,
representatives of the synagogue and the townspeople came to Proykeh's inn to
thank Yisrael for his extraordinary prayers.
Yisrael
welcomed them warmly and listened to their expressions of gratitude. When they
finished, he smiled and asked: "And what about my payment?"
The administrators looked at one another. They had never discussed a fee,
but they accepted that his request was indeed reasonable. "Name your
price," they said. "Whatever you ask, we will give you."
"I don't want money," Yisrael replied. "My only request is
that you acquire for me a beautiful, flawless etrog-one truly worthy of the
blessing." The officials were
enormously relieved. They had expected him to ask for a considerable sum. An
etrog? That sounded easy enough. "We'll do everything we can to find you a
beautiful one," they promised.
They had no idea what was in store for them. That year, even regular
kosher etrogs were exceptionally difficult to find; beautiful, flawless etrogs
were almost impossible to obtain. In every town and village surrounding
Sinitieh, there was not a single etrog to be found-not even one that would
barely be acceptable for ritual use.
The other three species were easy enough to obtain. But the etrog-the most
beautiful and distinctive of the Four Species-was nowhere to be found.
Determined
to keep their promise, the community leaders hurriedly sent representatives to
distant cities and larger population centers. They gave them large sums of
money and instructed them to pay whatever price was necessary.
The representatives all returned empty-handed. Not a single etrog could be
found.
The eve of Sukkot arrived. Yisrael sat alone in his room at Proykeh's inn,
preparing with deep reverence for the approaching festival. But he was
troubled. Despite all their efforts, no suitable etrog had been found. It
seemed as though Heaven itself had decreed that he be prevented from fulfilling
the mitzvah of the Four Species.
His disappointment was so great that he even refrained from attending the
synagogue for the afternoon Mincha prayer before the festival.
The
synagogue officials were ashamed to face him. They had promised him an etrog
and had failed.
Yisrael, normally cheerful and radiant, was visibly troubled. He paced
back and forth in his room, anxious and deeply saddened.
Suddenly, a heavy knock shook the door of Proykeh's inn. Before anyone
could answer, the door swung open. A tall peasant stood there, wearing the
traditional hat of a Russian farmer. His voice was loud and crude.
He sat down
at an empty table, placed a bundle in front of him, rubbed his hands together,
and asked Proykeh for a plate of steaming food. "Ah!" he sighed
happily as he settled in. A few minutes later,
the peasant called cheerfully: "Proykeh, come here! Look at what a
beautiful fruit I found today!"
As he spoke, he opened his bundle. Inside was a magnificent etrog!
-yellow, unblemished, shapely, bumpy-- impressive to an exceptional degree.
"I know," the peasant commented, "that your people use a fruit
like this for one of your holidays."
Proykeh immediately understood what he was seeing and what he had to do.
His heart was leaping with joy but he did his best to appear calm. Walking over
to the peasant's table, he picked up the etrog and carefully examined it from
every angle.
He had seen how deeply disappointed Yisrael had been. And after the manner
Yisrael had led the prayers during the High Holy Days, Proykeh regarded him as
a guest deserving the greatest honor. He knew exactly how much this etrog would
mean to him.
"Yes," Proykeh said, still struggling to conceal his excitement.
"It's a beautiful fruit. We can certainly use it for the festival. How
much do you want for it?"
The peasant named his price. Proykeh immediately agreed and paid him. Then
he hurried straight to Yisrael's room.
Without saying a word, he held out the beautiful etrog that had just
arrived, as though from Heaven. In an instant, the atmosphere changed. It
seemed as though the room itself had suddenly expanded and risen to
unimaginable heights.
Yisrael's eyes sparkled with joy in anticipation of performing the
precious mitzvah. It seemed that at any moment he might break into a dance. Had
he not needed to hurry to the synagogue, he might have remained there staring
at the etrog for hours.
The following day, all the people of the town came to Proykeh's inn. With
awe and reverence they received in turn the etrog and the other Three Species
from the hands of the young scholar.
Many people later speculated that perhaps it had been Eliyahu HaNovi
(Elijah the Prophet), who had troubled himself to appear as a farmer to bring a
beautiful and flawless etrog to the righteous Yisraelik.
Immediately after Sukkot and Shemini Atzeret/Simchat Torah, Yisrael packed
his belongings bundle, and as always, he warmly took leave of his host, Proykeh
and continued on his travels, this time to the village of Kashilovitz.
There, he continued to hide the extraordinary greatness within him, until
the day in 1734 when his brilliant light was no longer allowed to remain
concealed. From then on, he became known throughout the world as Rabbi Yisrael
Baal Shem Tov-the holy Baal Shem Tov ('Master of the Good Name') of blessed and
saintly memory.

Three Years and more recovery stories – English R. Pauli
As the
three year mark to the war approaches more stories and perhaps medical miracles
appear on the various TV Channels. One story was that of a front line soldier
critically injured who underwent 13 surgeries and a year in the hospital to
recover.
Another
of two brothers working out in the gym with their dad all three were wounded in
battle one time or other besides psychological scars. The workout is a good
solution.
Last but
not least was Major Aliel Malka who had a girlfriend before he was wounded.
Critically wounded and having to learn how to walk, she slept next to him and
fed him while she learned for her College Degree. He liked her in their first
two years of dating but bonded with her as she nursed him back to health. He slowly
was nursed back to health between the injury and delayed their wedding until he
was capable of putting on a Tallis and standing with two arm supporting short
crutches. He broke the glass with his foot. It was not an easy feat for him. [I
have age/sports related breaks in the sinews of my shoulders and can testify
that it is difficult to put on a Tallis, especially my silver loaded Shabbos
Tallis. Standing for some time with a leg injury is also not easy.]
Each of
the above three interviews were ten minutes but I wanted to convey in a few
words how these excellent people over-came their injuries and by best wishes to
the newlywed couple.
The Japanese
in WWII to Americans were the bad guys BUT…
On March 8, 1938, a report reached Major General Kiichiro Higuchi
at his intelligence post in Harbin, Manchuria.
Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi Germany had crossed Siberia by train
in the dead of winter and were stranded at Otpor, a Soviet railway station on
the Manchurian border.
Temperatures were below minus 20 degrees Celsius. Manchukuo's foreign affairs office would not let them in. Japan was Germany's ally. Nobody wanted to upset Berlin. Higuchi decided to act anyway.
He sent food, clothing and fuel to the border, then arranged a
special train on the South Manchuria Railway to carry the refugees to Harbin. On March 12, they arrived. He issued them transit visas and
arranged passage onward to Shanghai and other safe havens. Germany formally protested. The Kwantung Army summoned Higuchi to
explain himself.
General Hideki Tojo, then chief of staff, heard him out — and
backed him.
"Japan is not a vassal of Nazi Germany," Higuchi later
wrote.
After the war, Stalin demanded Higuchi be handed over as a war
criminal. General MacArthur refused — reportedly after Jewish organizations
intervened on his behalf.
Higuchi never took another job. He spent his final years farming in
Miyazaki, bowing in prayer each morning to the east, west, south and north. He died in 1970. Most of the world has never heard his name.
I think I
posted this story a year or so ago but it is worth repeating. January 27, 1945. A prisoner-of-war camp near Ziegenhain, Germany.
A German commandant drew his pistol, placed it against an American sergeant's
head, and demanded a list of names.
The sergeant was 25 years old. What he said in the next few
seconds would decide the fate of more than 200 men.
His name was Roderick "Roddie" Edmonds. Born in 1919 in
South Knoxville, Tennessee, he had graduated from Knoxville High School in
1938, just a regular young man from East Tennessee.
Nothing had prepared him for this. His unit, the 422nd Infantry
Regiment of the 106th Infantry Division, reached Europe only five days before
Germany launched its massive winter counteroffensive. History calls it the Battle of the Bulge. For the untested 106th,
it went wrong almost immediately.
On December 19, 1944, Edmonds was captured. By Christmas Day, he
was locked inside Stalag IX-B at Bad Orb. About a month later, the Germans loaded him and more than 1,200
other sergeants onto a transfer to Stalag IX-A. Food was so scarce that one
loaf of bread was reportedly split among ten men.
The Germans held the officers separately. That made Edmonds the
senior American there, responsible for 1,275 prisoners. Then, on the evening of January 26, the guards made an
announcement. Only Jewish-American prisoners were to fall out at the next
morning's roll call, and anyone who disobeyed would be shot.
Edmonds understood what "separate" could mean. More than
200 of his men were Jewish, and American soldiers had been warned what
sometimes happened to Jewish prisoners once they were singled out. So he gave an order of his own. Every American in the barracks
would fall out at dawn. No exceptions.
Morning came. All 1,275 men stood in formation outside the
barracks, shoulder to shoulder.
The commandant, Major Siegmann, took one look and understood
exactly what had happened. He shouted that they could not all be Jews. Edmonds looked straight at him and answered with five words.
"We are all Jews here."
Siegmann drew his pistol and pressed it to Edmonds's head. Edmonds
didn't step back. He kept talking. He reminded the commandant that under the Geneva Conventions, a
prisoner owed his captors only his name, rank, and serial number. Religion
wasn't on the list.
Then he delivered the real warning. If you shoot me, he said,
you'll have to shoot all of us. And when this war is over, you will stand trial
for war crimes.
By early 1945, Germany's defeat was clearly on the way. The
commandant ran through that math, lowered his pistol, and walked off. Not one Jewish soldier was handed over. Paul Stern, one of the men
in that formation, carried the memory for the rest of his life.
Edmonds kept watch over his men through roughly 100 days of
captivity, until March 30, 1945. Then he went home to Tennessee. He later served his country again in the Korean War. Through all
of it, he kept the story of that roll call to himself.
He wrote in a diary while he was a prisoner. But he never told his
wife or children what happened on January 27, and he passed away in 1985
without ever sharing it.
Years later, his family came across a news article that mentioned
his name. It was the first time his son, Pastor Chris Edmonds, had ever heard
about it.
Chris began tracking down the men his father had protected. Their
accounts matched, one after another. In 2015, Yad Vashem, Israel's Holocaust memorial, named Roddie
Edmonds Righteous Among the Nations. It is the honor Israel gives to non-Jews
who risked their lives to save Jews.
On March 2, 2026, at the White House, Chris Edmonds accepted the
Medal of Honor on his father's behalf. It came 81 years after that morning at
Ziegenhain.
The Germans had asked him to point out the Jewish soldiers.
Instead, Roddie Edmonds pointed at all 1,275 men, and at himself.

IS EGYPT STILL PREPARING FOR WAR AGAINST
ISRAEL? Egypt officially frames ongoing infrastructure
initiatives as civilian economic integration and regional development. Egypt's
Ministry of Transport describes the project as the 500-kilometer El-Ferdan,
East Port Said, Bir al-Abd, Arish, and Taba
railway, an ambitious infrastructure program spanning the northeastern
peninsula. Following the inauguration of the rehabilitated section to Bir al
Abd, active construction has pressed eastward through Arish toward the terminal
at Ras al Naqb near the border. Officially, this network is designed to link
mining sites, industrial zones, and ports directly to the Nile Valley to boost
local commerce. https://www.ynetnews.com/opinions-analysis/article/rjmanop9fl

Roaring Lion Day 211
Last night, I prepared
some talking points prior to the attempted 9/11 murder of the passengers on Fly
Dubai by a pilot from Oman (Shiite friendly with Iran). What I wrote:
Tonight at midnight
Israeli Gasoline reaches $10.23 a gallon! Two USAF squadrons were quietly
transferred to the Nevatim Air Base in the Negev. (I served there for one month
when Skyhawks were still on the base during construction.) 7
Israelis
were stabbed helping subdue the attacker. “Suddenly
I heard a struggle. Something like a fight coming from the cockpit,” he says,
on the phone from Saudi Arabi’s Tabuk Airport, where the flight eventually
landed. “The door was slightly ajar and I saw an attempt to push someone out.
Then three Israelis who were sitting behind me came to see what was happening,
and the plane suddenly went into a very steep dive, nose down, with a very
intense spin.
“From what I understood, a co-pilot stabbed the
captain, and once they subdued the attacker, there were two other pilots on the
plane and they took control,” he says. There have been reports off two off-duty
pilots taking the reins after the captain had been incapacitated.

We are coming up to
3years of war.
This Morning on the
radio: The threat level from Yehuda and Shomron Drones is very real. Stephen E.
Hughes wrote about this: An
Immediate Threat, A Pivotal Tipping Point. Since the resumption of the
Israel-Iran war on February 28, 2026, small first-person-view (FPV) drones and
quadcopters have become the single most consequential tactical threat to
Israel. This report presents (1) a threat assessment of the small-drone and FPV
threat to Israel across its active fronts, (2) an analysis of the gap in
Israel’s existing emergency and eminent-domain legal framework with respect to
aerial-defense property requisition, and (3) a full model statute the Aerial
Defense Emergency Requisition Law, 5786–2026 designed to close that gap by
authorizing rapid, compensated, judicially reviewable requisition of rooftops
and land for aerial-defense installations, coordinated with Israel’s pending
drone-interception legislation. The threat is proliferating across multiple
simultaneous fronts Lebanon, Gaza, Yemen, and potentially Iran/Iraq-based
proxies each testing different tactics (fiber-optic FPVs, swarms, long-range
strikes on infrastructure), which strains a single national air-defense architecture
built primarily around missile interception.
