Good Shabbos Deuteronomy 11:26 – 16:17

Last week, I lamented that Reform Judaism is dying out and in two generations like the Beotusim they will disappear. I based this mainly on their have next to no children. Tzvi Yisrael F. wrote: Anti-Semitism isn’t the only problem facing Diaspora Jewry. How painful it was for me to write this article. Statistically, the intermarriage in America could reach 90% by 2050 - if they can hold out that long.

Parsha Reeh

This week starts the second Torah Drasha of Moshe in Devarim. The first dealt with lessons from the past. This Drasha deals with entering Eretz Yisrael in the future. This is a very rich in Mitzvos section of the Torah. Parsha Reeh 55 Mitzvos, Parsha Shoftim 41 Mitzvos, Ki Tetzei 74 Mitzvos and finally Ki Savo with 6 Mitzvos. A grand total of 176 Mitzvos entailed into one speech. For us these Mitzvos are new, the question is if these Mitzvos were taught within the oral Torah from Sinai and only mentioned here in the written Torah. One or two reasons to believe that these Mitzvos were known orally is the fact that there is a repeat of the laws of Kashrus and a refresher about the month of Aviv (spring) for Pesach. As much as I would love to comment on each and every Mitzvah, it is simply impractical.

We start out this week’s Parsha with a message about a blessing and a curse but it will come out only in three more weeks what they are and where they are. For Moshe and Am Yisrael listening to him it was in one long lecture. Perhaps like with the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s lectures they may have been songs and a recess or it was one straight lecture.

Due to all sorts of Yeshiva Vacation Time issues, I was force to take an old Drasha from years ago. I have left the option of adding something new into my Drasha next week.

11:26 Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse: 27 the blessing, if ye shall hearken unto the commandments of the LORD your God, which I command you this day; 28and the curse, if ye shall not hearken unto the commandments of the LORD your God, but turn aside out of the way which I command you this day, to go after other gods, which ye have not known.

Everybody can choose what they want. If you are true to the LRD G-D you will eventually succeed and if not, your success might only be in this world.

29 And it shall come to pass, when the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou go to possess it, that thou shalt set the blessing upon mount Gerizim, and the curse upon mount Eval. …

12:29 When the LORD thy God shall cut off the nations from before thee, whither thou go in to dispossess them, and thou dispossess them, and dwell in their land; 30 take heed to thyself that thou be not ensnared to follow them, after that they are destroyed from before thee; and that thou inquire not after their gods, saying: 'How used these nations to serve their gods? even so will I do likewise.' 31 Thou shalt not do so unto the LORD thy God; for every abomination to the LORD, which He hates, have they done unto their gods; for even their sons and their daughters do they burn in the fire to their gods.

We were told to destroy everything from the gods of the people which would disappoint archaeologists but this is what HASHEM wants.

13:1 All this word which I command you, that shall ye observe to do; thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.

One does not go to the right or left of what G-D commands and only to observe it.

Did you ever meet one the missionaries who start blabbering to you all sorts of nonsense like – he gave his only son. In addition to MY firstborn Israel in Shemos 4:22 the following tells us that there is more than one son of G-D. In fact G-D has many children.

14:1 Ye are the children of the LORD your God: ye shall not cut yourselves, nor make any baldness between your eyes for the dead. 2 For thou art a holy people unto the LORD thy God, and the LORD hath chosen thee to be His own treasure out of all peoples that are upon the face of the earth. 3 Thou shalt not eat any abominable thing.

Rat, snake, worms, etc. and other things that are detestable and often appear part of ‘reality shows’. Nor does one swallow living goldfish for that is a live creature which was popular some 80 to 90 years ago among the Goyim. (See kosher fish below)

4 These are the beasts which ye may eat: the ox, the sheep, and the goat, 5 the hart, and the gazelle, and the roebuck, and the wild goat, and the pygarg, and the antelope, and the mountain-sheep.

Does any modern person know what a pygarg is? All these animals live or lived in Eretz Yisrael and although Moose, Elk, Bison, Giraffe, etc. are not native to Israel, they are kosher as they part the hooves and chew the cud – now try to capture a moose or a bison and hold it still for slaughter that the Shochet is not killed in the process.

6 And every beast that parts the hoof, and hath the hoof wholly cloven in two, and chews the cud, among the beasts, that ye may eat. 7 Nevertheless these ye shall not eat of them that only chew the cud, or of them that only have the hoof cloven: the camel, and the hare, and the rock-badger, because they chew the cud but part not the hoof, they are unclean unto you;

The rock badger (Hyrax) is very common around Ein Gedi in the Dead Sea area. These are the only three animals discovered after the writing of the Bible that exhibit this property. There is one and only one animal that has cloven hooves and does not chew its cud.

8 and the swine, because he parts the hoof but chews not the cud, he is unclean unto you;

This animal not only eats piggish and is sloppy but when it lies down stretches out its hooves forward. I photographed this in the San Diego Zoo. It is pure Yetzer HaRa – look my feet are kosher – all right you con artist but you do not chew the cud. This is the only animal on the planet that has these features everyone else with cloven hooves chews its cud. Special tricks and feed stalls would have to be built to slaughter kosher an American Bison.

of their flesh ye shall not eat, and their carcasses ye shall not touch.

Like the carcasses of snakes, rats, lizards and other assorted rodents, their carcass is Tumay.

9 These ye may eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales may ye eat;

Most fish are like this.

10 and whatsoever hath not fins and scales ye shall not eat; it is unclean unto you.

But not the shark or sword fish, crustaceans, all octopuses/squid, eels, sea horses, jelly fish, turtles, Dolphins, Seals, Sea Lions, and various creatures.

11 Of all clean birds ye may eat.

The Talmud in Chullin lists four signs of which some birds have two, three or all four. Most of the forbidden species are birds that feed upon carrion.

12 But these are they of which ye shall not eat: the great vulture, and the bearded vulture, and the ospray; 13 and the glede, and the falcon, and the kite after its kinds; 14 and every raven after its kinds; 15 and the ostrich, and the night-hawk, and the sea-mew, and the hawk after its kinds; 16 the little owl, and the great owl, and the horned owl; 17 and the pelican, and the carrion-vulture, and the cormorant; 18 and the stork, and the heron after its kinds, and the hoopoe, and the bat. 19 And all winged swarming things are unclean unto you; they shall not be eaten.

This refers to unclean locusts.

20 Of all clean winged things ye may eat. 21 Ye shall not eat of anything that dies of itself;

This is Nevaila Meat and a Trafe piece (an animal that dies by itself or one torn by beasts) is something diseased, torn or improperly slaughtered.

thou may give it unto the stranger that is within thy gates, that he may eat it; or thou mat sell it unto a foreigner; for thou art a holy people unto the LORD thy God.

These you can benefit from or even feed your dog.

21. Thou shalt not seethe a kid in its mother's milk.

This is the third time the prohibition appears. One is for not cooking, the second for not eating if somebody else cooked it and the third one for not benefiting from it by even feeding it to a dog.

22 Thou shalt surely tithe all the increase of thy seed, that which is brought forth in the field year by year. 23 And thou shalt eat before the LORD thy God, in the place which He shall choose to cause His name to dwell there, the tithe of thy corn, of thy wine, and of your oil, and the firstlings of thy herd and of thy flock; that thou may learn to fear the LORD thy God always.

Maaser Sheni was fruit eaten from money which redeemed in Yerushalayim and the firstlings were given to a Temple Cohain.

24 And if the way be too long for thee, so that thou art not able to carry it, because the place is too far from thee, which the LORD thy God shall choose to set His name there, when the LORD thy God shall bless thee; 25 then shalt thou turn it into money, and bind up the money in thy hand, and shalt go unto the place which the LORD thy God shall choose.

Placing the value of the second tithe on coins describe above.

26 And thou shalt bestow the money for whatsoever thy soul desires, for oxen, or for sheep, or for wine, or for strong drink, or for whatsoever thy soul asks of thee; and thou shalt eat there before the LORD thy God, and thou shalt rejoice, thou and thy household. 27 And the Levite that is within thy gates, thou shalt not forsake him; for he hath neither portion nor inheritance with thee.

If you had a lot of Maaser Sheni money you could buy a Sheep or Goat as a sacrifice of thanksgiving.

28 At the end of every three years, even in the same year, thou shalt bring forth all the tithe of your increase, and shall lay it up within thy gates. 29 And the Levite, because he hath no portion nor inheritance with thee, and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, that are within thy gates, shall come, and shall eat and be satisfied; that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all the work of thy hand which thou do.

This is Maaser Ani or poor man’s Maaser in the third and six years of Shmita.

15:1 At the end of every seven years thou shalt make a release. 2 And this is the manner of the release: every creditor shall release that which he hath lent unto his neighbor; he shall not exact it of his neighbor and his brother; because the LORD'S release hath been proclaimed.

This is the Shmita year and prior to the eight year the debt must be collected or forgiven to a Jew but as to a foreigner –

3 Of a foreigner thou may exact it; but whatsoever of your is with thy brother thy hand shall release. 4 Howbeit there shall be no needy among you--for the LORD will surely bless thee in the land which the LORD thy God gives thee for an inheritance to possess it—

No needy would mean that everybody was blessed for completely observing the Torah will all their soul and labor.

5 if only thou diligently hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all this commandment which I command thee this day. 6 For the LORD thy God will bless thee, as He promised thee; and thou shalt lend unto many nations, but thou shalt not borrow; and thou shalt rule over many nations, but they shall not rule over thee.

You want the blessings and miracles then observe.

7 If there be among you a needy man, one of thy brethren, within any of thy gates, in thy land which the LORD thy God gives thee, thou shalt not harden thy heart, nor shut thy hand from thy needy brother; 8 but thou shalt surely open thy hand unto him, and shalt surely lend him sufficient for his need in that which he wants. 9 Beware that there be not a base thought in thy heart, saying: 'The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand'; and your eye be evil against thy needy brother, and thou give him nothing; and he cry unto the LORD against thee, and it be sin in thee. 10 Thou shalt surely give him, and thy heart shall not be grieved when thou gives unto him; because that for this thing the LORD thy God will bless thee in all thy work, and in all that thou put thy hand unto. 11 For the poor shall never cease out of the land; therefore I command thee, saying: 'Thou shalt surely open thy hand unto thy poor and needy brother, in thy land.'

This does not mean that every person begging you that you must give to but only the Shmita crops in your fields for there are 1,600,000 to 2,000,000 people living today in Israel below the poverty level and if I were to just try to give each one only ten Agarot (Israeli cents) it would be more than my income in Shekels for the year so obviously one cannot do that but only try his best at charity and the Sages say no more than 20% and no less than 10% of one’s income.

12 If thy brother, a Hebrew man, or a Hebrew woman, be sold unto thee, he shall serve thee six years; and in the seventh year thou shalt let him go free from thee. 13 And when thou let him go free from thee, thou shalt not let him go empty; 14 You shalt furnish him liberally out of thy flock, and out of thy threshing-floor, and out of thy winepress; of that wherewith the LORD thy God hath blessed thee thou shalt give unto him. 15 And thou shalt remember that thou were a bondman in the land of Egypt, and the LORD thy God redeemed thee; therefore I command thee this thing to-day. 16 And it shall be, if he say unto thee: 'I will not go out from thee'; because he loves thee and thy house, because he fares well with thee; 17 then thou shalt take an awl, and thrust it through his ear and into the door, and he shall be thy bondman forever. And also unto thy bondwoman thou shalt do likewise. 18 It shall not seem hard unto thee, when thou let him go free from thee; for to the double of the hire of a hireling hath he served thee six years; and the LORD thy God will bless thee in all that thou does.

Some people become poor and sell themselves into slavery to be guaranteed food, shelter and at the end of six years maximum some compensation to start their own life anew.

19 All the firstling males that are born of thy herd and of thy flock thou shalt sanctify unto the LORD thy God; thou shalt do no work with the firstling of your ox, nor shear the firstling of thy flock. 20 Thou shalt eat it before the LORD thy God year by year in the place which the LORD shall choose, thou and thy household. 21 And if there be any blemish therein, lameness, or blindness, any ill blemish whatsoever, thou shalt not sacrifice it unto the LORD thy God. 22 Thou shalt eat it within thy gates; the unclean and the clean may eat it alike, as the gazelle, and as the hart. 23 Only thou shalt not eat the blood thereof; thou shalt pour it out upon the ground as water.

Wild animals even if grown in captivity like the deer, mountain goat, water buffalo, etc. must have their blood covered with dirt upon slaughtering.

16: … 16 Three times in a year shall all thy males appear before the LORD thy God in the place which He shall choose; on the feast of unleavened bread, and on the feast of weeks, and on the feast of tabernacles; and they shall not appear before the LORD empty; 17 every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the LORD thy God which He hath given thee.

These are the three festivals or Chagim or Regelim in which people would go up to Yerushalayim by foot or other transportation but walk on their feet up the Temple Mount and hence the name Regelim for the plural of foot but not feet but three times going up the mount.

Love between two wounded soldiers – English R. Pauli

Most of the wounded and their stories came out during the earlier stages of the Gaza Campaign. It is rare that I watch Arutz 12 at about 8:10 in the morning for most is nonsense after the news like “dancing with the stars” and other things. This week there was an exception.

A Lieutenant was with his commander when they were hit. The superior soldier was killed outright. The Lt. was wavering between conscious and unconscious. At first he did not know that he was missing a leg. His head injuries were bad too. He recovered enough and started physical therapy. He then met a female rescue soldier also wounded in her leg. Both of them were to do hydro-therapy together.

At first it is just pleasantries. Then slowly but surely it became as the Disney Movie Song “There’s something there that was not there before”. I missed the opening of the conversation so either they married or about to be married both with an amputated leg.

*This is the second couple as the previous couple one lost the right leg and the other the left and they were a couple before Oct. 7^th.

A big miracle for a little boy. Mommy pushing a stroller with her three year old went over the street to the traffic island. A car stopped for them. The three year old lost his Yarmulke. He runs back into the crosswalk and picks it up. The driver does not see him and runs over the boy at a low speed knocking him under the car. He was in between the wheels. He gets up unscathed but was taken to the hospital just as a precaution. – Traffic Camera shown on all TV Stations did not make the written news.

You Don’t Have to Be Jewish to Fight Nazis

Before “Dior” meant elegance, it meant survival. The woman behind Miss Dior perfume wasn’t a fashion model—she was prisoner 57813 at Ravensbrück.

Catherine Dior—Christian Dior’s youngest sister—lived a life fashion magazine preferred to forget. While her brother sketched gowns in Paris, she gathered intelligence for the F2 Resistance network, tracking German troop movements along the Mediterranean coast. Her code name was “Caro.” She was just 26 years old.

On July 6, 1944—seven weeks before Paris was liberated—the Gestapo arrested her.

They tortured her for days at the notorious Rue de la Pompe headquarters, demanding names. Names of fellow resistance fighters. Names of safe houses. Names of a network that could collapse with a single betrayal. She gave them nothing. Not her lover, Hervé des Charbonneries, who had recruited her. Not her fellow operatives. Not even her brother Christian, who desperately tried to use his Nazi connections to save her.

She gave them silence.

On August 15, 1944, she was put on one of the last trains out of Paris—just ten days before liberation. Four hundred women were crammed into cattle cars and sent to Ravensbrück, Hitler’s concentration camp for women in northern Germany.

For nine months, Catherine Dior vanished into hell.

Ravensbrück. Then Torgau, where she was forced into munitions labor for German industry. Then Abteroda. Then Markkleeberg. Starvation reduced her to skin and bone. Forced labor destroyed her hands. Lice filled her hair. Dysentery and pneumonia nearly killed her. In April 1945, as Allied forces closed in, the Nazis forced surviving prisoners onto a death march deeper into Germany. She survived all of it.

When American soldiers liberated her near Leipzig on April 4, 1945, she could barely walk. It took weeks for her to make her way home. On a spring day in May 1945, Christian Dior waited at the Gare de l’Est in Paris. When Catherine stepped off the train, he almost didn’t recognize the skeletal woman before him.

He had saved rations for weeks to make her a soufflé. She couldn’t eat it. Her stomach had shrunk too much from starvation. What do you do after surviving the unsurvivable?

Catherine chose flowers. She and Hervé became flower traders, waking at 4 a.m. to sell roses, lilies, and jasmine at Les Halles. Years later, she bought a rose farm in Provence and grew flowers until her death in 2008 at age 91. After witnessing humanity’s capacity for cruelty, she chose to nurture beauty. She chose life.

In 1947, as Christian prepared to launch his first haute couture collection and his first perfume, he struggled to name the fragrance. Catherine walked into the room. Mizza Bricard, his trusted collaborator, exclaimed: “Voilà, Miss Dior!”

The perfume that became an icon wasn’t named for glamour. It was named for survival.

Catherine’s resilience shaped more than a perfume. Christian’s “New Look”—its celebration of femininity, beauty, and abundance after years of wartime austerity—was deeply influenced by watching his sister choose grace after enduring unimaginable darkness. The France that awarded Catherine the Croix de Guerre, the Légion d’honneur, and the King’s Medal for Courage was also a France that preferred to forget women like her existed.

She rarely spoke about what she endured. When called to testify at the 1952 trial of her torturers, a defense lawyer tried to discredit her, suggesting she had confused her torturer with someone else.

She hadn’t. She remembered every face.

But Catherine didn’t build her life around suffering. She built it on roses.

Late in life, a French veteran asked her at a school event how she had survived such horror. Her answer was simple: “Love life, young man. Love life.”

Words forged in Ravensbrück. Lived in a rose garden in Provence.

Catherine Dior died in 2008. Most obituaries called her “Christian Dior’s sister.” Few mentioned she was a decorated war heroine who refused to break under torture. Fewer still noted that Miss Dior—one of the world’s most iconic perfumes—was named for a woman who understood that real beauty isn’t worn.

It’s survived.

The next time you see that elegant bottle, remember: behind every symbol of luxury are stories we’ve forgotten. Behind the name Miss Dior is a woman who chose roses over revenge, beauty over bitterness, life over death.

Catherine Dior proved that the most powerful act of resistance isn’t violence.

Sometimes it’s simply refusing to let cruelty win. Sometimes it’s growing flowers.
