Parshiyos Netzavim – Vayelach

The third and final Drasha (Torah Speech) of Moshe Rabbaynu given on Adar 7, 2488 in the morning before descending Har Nevo. Everybody has been told that this is Moshe’s final Drasha. They knew that after the war with Midian, his time on earth was limited as he could not enter the land with them. Thus he gives his farewell speech to the Nation.

29:9 Ye are standing this day all of you before the LORD your God: your heads, your tribes, your elders, and your officers, even all the men of Israel, 10 your little ones, your wives, and thy stranger that is in the midst of thy camp, from the hewer of thy wood unto the drawer of thy water;

From the Judges, Princes, Torah Scholars and Cohanim to the lower trades of hewers of wood (loggers) and water carriers even little children were before him.

11 that thou shouldest enter into the covenant of the LORD thy God--and into His oath--which the LORD thy God makes with thee this day;

This is very appropriate to read in Elul to remind us of our covenant with HASHEM.

12 that He may establish thee this day unto Himself for a people, and that He may be unto thee a God, as He spoke unto thee, and as He swore unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. 13 Neither with you only do I make this covenant and this oath; 14 but with him that stands here with us this day before the LORD our God, and also with him that is not here with us this day—

The L-RD is fulfilling his promise and covenant with your forefathers and now the oath is coming into effect. We have a general ruling (Klal: that Maaseh Avos Siman Le Banim) that the deeds of our fathers is a sign for the children. Just as that generation had to review the Torah before entering Eretz Yisrael to Conquer it, so too we should do so. Rabbi Yosef Zvi Ben Porat HaCohain said, “If the Government of Israel had invested in giving money to orphans, widows and Torah Scholars instead of a 30 meter cement anti-tunnel wall around Gaza, Oct. 7th would never had occurred.” One should learn from the deeds of our fathers.

5 for ye know how we dwelt in the land of Egypt; and how we came through the midst of the nations through which ye passed; 16 and ye have seen their detestable things, and their idols, wood and stone, silver and gold, which were with them-- 17 lest there should be among you man, or woman, or family, or tribe, whose heart turns away this day from the LORD our God, to go to serve the gods of those nations; lest there should be among you a root that bears gall and wormwood; 18 and it come to pass, when he heareth the words of this curse, that he bless himself in his heart, saying: 'I shall have peace, though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart--that the watered be swept away with the dry'; 19 the LORD will not be willing to pardon him, but then the anger of the LORD and His jealousy shall be kindled against that man, and all the curse that is written in this book shall lie upon him, and the LORD shall blot out his name from under heaven;

Watch out for idolatry. This also includes in a way atheism, socialism and communism that lead people away from the natural order of things with false gods and promises that can never be fulfilled.

20 and the LORD shall separate him unto evil out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant that is written in this book of the law. 21 And the generation to come, your children that shall rise up after you, and the foreigner that shall come from a far land, shall say, when they see the plagues of that land, and the sicknesses wherewith the LORD hath made it sick; 22 and that the whole land thereof is brimstone, and salt, and a burning, that it is not sown, nor bears, nor any grass grows therein, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD overthrew in His anger, and in His wrath; 23 even all the nations shall say 'Wherefore hath the LORD done thus unto this land? what means the heat of this great anger?'

Samuel Clemens aka Mark Twain traveled to the Holy Land 1867. He rode with an Arab Guide to Yerushalayim barely seeing a tree in a barren land. It was definitely not flowing with milk and honey. I came to build my house in the Modiin Area. It was barren from the bulldozers clearing the dirt roads and nothing but some hardy weeds was growing. Birds were not to be found. Not far away was the Ben Shem Forest planted project where weasels, porcupines, wild boars, coyotes, foxes, deer, moles, hedgehogs and other animals lived. Fast forward 40 plus years and the mountain and area is built with houses,  synagogues and out outdoor Minyan in an area where we planted pine trees 39 to 40 years ago. A lecture by a Prof. Yehuda … that I heard over 40 years ago tied the people returning to soil to the soil rebirth as the land of Yisrael and Am Yisrael are tied together.

24 then men shall say: 'Because they forsook the covenant of the LORD, the God of their fathers, which He made with them when He brought them forth out of the land of Egypt; 25 and went and served other gods, and worshipped them, gods that they knew not, and that He had not allotted unto them; 26 therefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against this land, to bring upon it all the curse that is written in this book; 27 and the LORD rooted them out of their land in anger, and in wrath, and in great indignation, and cast them into another land, as it is this day'.

The change between 1867 where one could see the wrath (which can be seen from my window looking towards Arab Occupied barren areas) or turning around towards Oranim, Lapid, Hashmonaim, Modiin Illit, Modiin, Kfar Rut, Shilat teeming with people and lush greenery where pre-Moshiach Israelis have returned to.

28 The secret things belong unto the LORD our God; but the things that are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.

G-D knows the mysteries of nature. Sometimes they are revealed to Tzadikim “Sod (secret/s) HASHEM for those that fear HIM.

30:1 And it shall come to pass, when all these things are come upon thee, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before thee, and thou shalt bethink thyself among all the nations, whither the LORD thy God hath driven thee, 2 and shalt return unto the LORD thy God, and hearken to His voice according to all that I command thee this day, thou and thy children, with all thy heart, and with all thy soul; 3 that then the LORD thy God will turn thy captivity, and have compassion upon thee, and will return and gather thee from all the peoples, whither the LORD thy God hath scattered thee. 4 If any of thine that are dispersed be in the uttermost parts of heaven, from thence will the LORD thy God gather thee, and from thence will He fetch thee. 5 And the LORD thy God will bring thee into the land which thy fathers possessed, and thou shalt possess it; and He will do thee good, and multiply thee above thy fathers. 6 And the LORD thy God will circumcise thy heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the LORD thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live.

The Moshiach might still not be here, but we are blessed to live in the land and having merits of our fathers to have come here.

7 And the LORD thy God will put all these curses upon thine enemies, and on them that hate thee, that persecuted thee. 8 And thou shalt return and hearken to the voice of the LORD, and do all His commandments which I command thee this day. 9 And the LORD thy God will make thee over-abundant in all the work of thy hand, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy land, for good; for the LORD will again rejoice over thee for good, as He rejoiced over thy fathers; 10 if thou shalt hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which are written in this book of the law; if thou turn unto the LORD thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul.

We are starting to see the beginning of the light but have not reached such a messianic era.

11 For this commandment which I command thee this day, it is not too hard for thee, neither is it far off. 12 It is not in heaven, that thou shouldest say: 'Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, and make us to hear it, that we may do it?' 13 Neither is it beyond the sea, that thou shouldest say: 'Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us, and make us to hear it, that we may do it?' 14 But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it.

There is no need to search for a new Torah (law for the nation). The Torah is no longer in heaven, across the sea, beyond the moon, etc. but rather it is written and needs to be close to your mouth and heart to observe it.

15 See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil, 16 in that I command thee this day to love the LORD thy God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments and His statutes and His ordinances; then thou shalt live and multiply, and the LORD thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou go in to possess it.

Now follow the Torah and possess the land. I hear from Rabbi Yosef Tzvi Ben Porat HaCohain Shlita that one of the great Torah Sages said that if the Charedim would really be Chared for Shabbos like Yom Kippur we would have 96% observance like on Yom Kippur. For on Yom Kippur people stay up all night and extra prays and even purification in the Mikvah. Then 96% of the country would observe properly Shabbos.

17 But if thy heart turn away, and thou wilt not hear, but shalt be drawn away, and worship other gods, and serve them; 18 I declare unto you this day, that ye shall surely perish; ye shall not prolong your days upon the land, whither thou passes over the Jordan to go in to possess it. 19 I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that I have set before thee life and death, the blessing and the curse; therefore choose life, that thou mayest live, thou and thy seed; 20 to love the LORD thy God, to hearken to His voice, and to cleave unto Him; for that is thy life, and the length of thy days; that thou mayest dwell in the land which the LORD swore unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.

Moshe is going to leave this world in a short time and making an appeal to elders, the main contingent of the army from 20-60years of age, women, children and even infants. He is no longer commanding but appealing to them to take the land, make the right choices.

31:1 And Moses went and spoke these words unto all Israel. 2 And he said unto them: 'I am a hundred and twenty years old this day; I can no more go out and come in; and the LORD hath said unto me: Thou shalt not go over this Jordan. 3 The LORD thy God, He will go over before thee; He will destroy these nations from before thee, and thou shalt dispossess them; and Joshua, he shall go over before thee, as the LORD hath spoken. 4 And the LORD will do unto them as He did to Sihon and to Og, the kings of the Amorites, and unto their land; whom He destroyed. 5 And the LORD will deliver them up before you, and ye shall do unto them according unto all the commandment which I have commanded you. 6 Be strong and of good courage, fear not, nor be affrighted at them; for the LORD thy God, He it is that doth go with thee; He will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.'

Chazak V’Amatz (Be strong and of good courage) is mentioned earlier to Yoshua Bin Nun and 4 or 5 times in the first chapter of Sefer Yoshua.

7 And Moses called unto Joshua, and said unto him in the sight of all Israel: 'Be strong and of good courage; for thou shalt go with this people into the land which the LORD hath sworn unto their fathers to give them; and thou shalt cause them to inherit it. 8 And the LORD, He it is that doth go before thee; He will be with thee, He will not fail thee, neither forsake thee; fear not, neither be dismayed.'

Yoshua was an assistant to Moshe. Moshe was likened to the sun and Yoshua to the moon in spirituality. Chazak V’Amatz is what he needs.

9 And Moses wrote this law, and delivered it unto the priests the sons of Levi, that bore the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and unto all the elders of Israel.

Sefer Devarim. [Here there is a dispute if he wrote the last eight lines and immediately forgot them, knew them or Yoshua wrote them after the passing of Moshe.]

10 And Moses commanded them, saying: 'At the end of every seven years, in the set time of the year of release, in the feast of tabernacles, 11 when all Israel is come to appear before the LORD thy God in the place which He shall choose, thou shalt read this law before all Israel in their hearing. 12 Assemble the people, the men and the women and the little ones, and thy stranger that is within thy gates, that they may hear, and that they may learn, and fear the LORD your God, and observe to do all the words of this law; 13 and that their children, who have not known, may hear, and learn to fear the LORD your God, as long as ye live in the land whither ye go over the Jordan to possess it.'

This is the gathering of the congregation during Chol HaMoed Sukkos after the Shmita Year in Yerushalayim that has been renewed with the reading of Sefer Devarim by the Kotel in recent times.

14 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Behold, thy days approach that thou must die; call Joshua, and present yourselves in the tent of meeting, that I may give him a charge.' And Moses and Joshua went, and presented themselves in the tent of meeting. 15 And the LORD appeared in the Tent in a pillar of cloud; and the pillar of cloud stood over the door of the Tent. 16 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Behold, thou art about to sleep with thy fathers; and this people will rise up, and go astray after the foreign gods of the land, whither they go to be among them, and will forsake Me, and break My covenant which I have made with them. 17 Then My anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide My face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall come upon them; so that they will say in that day: Are not these evils come upon us because our God is not among us? 18 And I will surely hide My face in that day for all the evil which they shall have wrought, in that they are turned unto other gods. 19 Now therefore write ye this song for you, and teach thou it the children of Israel; put it in their mouths, that this song may be a witness for Me against the children of Israel. 20 For when I shall have brought them into the land which I swore unto their fathers, flowing with milk and honey; and they shall have eaten their fill, and waxen fat; and turned unto other gods, and served them, and despised Me, and broken My covenant;

Waxen fat. There is a story of a son of a religious Billionaire who married a Millionaire Woman. He became bored with his life and died of an accidental overdose in the arms of a woman of ill repute. One should observe Torah both in poverty and in wealth. It is stated that one who observes the Torah in poverty will eventually observe it in wealth (which could be old age and healthy not necessarily monetary with many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren). But one who diminishes observance in wealth will end up with diminished wealth in his old age. You might say “What about George Soros?” the answer is that he is getting rewarded for his Mitzvos in this world and will not have any merits left in the next world to save him.

21 then it shall come to pass, when many evils and troubles are come upon them, that this song shall testify before them as a witness; for it shall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their seed; for I know their imagination how they do even now, before I have brought them into the land which I swore.'

Before you climb the mountain to see the promised land and rest eternally, you shall teach the nation the song of Hazinu.

22 So Moses wrote this song the same day, and taught it the children of Israel. 23 And he gave Joshua the son of Nun a charge, and said: 'Be strong and of good courage; for thou shalt bring the children of Israel into the land which I swore unto them; and I will be with thee.'

Chazak V’Amatz. Yoshua is daunted and awed by the task of leading an ungrateful nation.

24 And it came to pass, when Moses had made an end of writing the words of this law in a book, until they were finished, 25 that Moses commanded the Levites, that bore the ark of the covenant of the LORD, saying: 26 'Take this book of the law, and put it by the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee. 27 For I know thy rebellion, and thy stiff neck; behold, while I am yet alive with you this day, ye have been rebellious against the LORD; and how much more after my death? 28 Assemble unto me all the elders of your tribes, and your officers, that I may speak these words in their ears, and call heaven and earth to witness against them. 29 For I know that after my death ye will in any wise deal corruptly, and turn aside from the way which I have commanded you; and evil will befall you in the end of days; because ye will do that which is evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke Him through the work of your hands.'

Throughout all generations the Torah shall be your guide.

30 And Moses spoke in the ears of all the assembly of Israel the words of this song, until they were finished:

Hazinu will be the song and next Parsha and like a Farbrengen (German has V instead of  F) or gathering of the Lubavitcher Rebbe teaching a song and swinging his arms so Moshe did with the generation about to enter Eretz Yisrael.

Elul the Tzeduka/Charity side of the equation

After work one or two fellows of the religious circle brought a Rabbi to give a class after work in the Synagogue in the Worker’s Union Building which included two banks the retirement fund, savings fund, travel deals and insurance for workers. Next to us was the company store and with all the overtime and production pressures we sort of lived there. It was around the year 1986, our Rabbi asked if we wanted to be partner of his Yeshiva – Kollel by contributing a dollar in new Israeli Shekels each day. It is now at least 40 years and the dollar a day to charity turned to approximately $14,610. I like to give meaning donations to charity and close to 20+ years ago, Rabbi Mimran opened a night Kollel and I started supporting it with a nice sum from my 10 to 20% of income that the Rabbis advise to give to charity. One can use up to half of his charity money to buy religious volumes to learn from for him and his family, Torah lessons for his children.

Our Sages tell us that those who observe the Torah when they are poor eventually will observe when they are rich. If one gives Maaser (one 10th for tithe) he will (HITASHER) or become rich. But our main theme is that on Rosh Hashanah, when the world is judged who will live or die, is that Charity = Tzeduka saves from death. There is the story of the daughter of Rabbi Akiva. Astrologers warned her that on the day of her wedding she would die. The Rabbi said, nonsense for Yisrael is above Mazel (luck) as we have as many Mitzvos as a pomegranate has seeds. On her wedding day, she wanted to adjust her golden Yerushalayim Pin in her hair. She saw a beggar asking for food. She stuck her pin into the wall behind her and got a portion for him. Later, her servant came to find the pin and found it in the middle of an eye of a poisonous snake. From here the Rabbis said, Tzeduka saves from death completely.

The highest form of charity is giving a person employment or a way to break out of their miserable condition. I heard a story on YouTube of a famous singer who was sitting in his limo and a little girl was singing his signature song on Nov. 14, 1967. 18 minutes the story went on. In the end a few things did not add up. First Nov. 1967 was one of the coldest winters on record and nobody would be out in NY on the streets to take off their gloves to throw money to an eight year old singing and with the noise of the traffic the driver would hear the song from a block away. In 1967, somebody would have probably reported a lonely girl at night to the authorities and most likely they would have acted. I also still have some of my memory chips and in those days was a different song. The famous song mentioned would not be released until Sept. 1968. Time is the most precious commodity that one has. Use if for Torah or waste it. On Sunday my wife and I had a deal to visit the Dead Sea without touring on a bus from close to home for two nights. I listened to 4 Dafei Gemara of Chullin going and 7 returning due to a delayed departure. But to waste my time on a made-up tale about a dead singer and his charity got me angry that I had lost 18 plus unrecoverable moments of my life over nonsense.

Don’t waste a moment, the Shofar is sounding in Elul that the Day of Judgement is at hand. Repent, ask for forgiveness with a private confession directly to G-D as nobody has to hear your sins to forgive you but the good L-RD. Pray harder or with more intent and give charity from the heart. Unlike the fiction I heard do something to visit mourners, visit the sick, help the poor and being partially disabled by age related things sometimes letting the man or woman struggle is more charity that helping them as they still feel independent.

Scrolls and Poles by Rabbi Yerachmiel Tilles

Physical suffering was the lot of the holy Rebbe of Zutchka, Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac Rosenbaum, son of the main Nodvorna Rebbe of the generation, Rabbi Issamar Rosenbaum[1]. After surviving the Holocaust, he developed a leg ailment that frequently caused him great pain. He kept his suffering to himself. He always wore an expression of tranquillity, even when he ought to have been screaming in agony.

After years of suffering, the condition of his legs deteriorated. Before, he had suffered from painful sores. Now they developed abscesses. After trying various treatments, the doctors informed the Rebbe and his family that only one option remained: to amputate both legs in order to save the Rebbe's life.

The Rebbe received the news without blinking an eye, as though they were not speaking about him at all. He lay in his bed in Ichilov Hospital, while around him preparations were being made for the difficult operation scheduled for the next day.

After Maariv, the Rebbe began to conduct a cheshbon nefesh - a [spiritual] accounting -- with himself. Suddenly, he rose up from his bed. He had figured out why this terrible thing had befallen him! He put on his clothes and slipped out of the room and exited the hospital. Outside, he hailed a taxi to his Beis Medrash in the Yad Eliyahu neighborhood where he lived.

With an energetic step he entered the shul and went directly to the place where the bookbinder's tools stood. He pulled out a spool of thick thread and a needle, and then went over to the Aron Kodesh ('Holy Ark'), From which he removed one of the Torah scrolls and placed it on the table.

With a sudden unnatural strength, he unrolled it to its beginning. The stitches attaching the first panel of parchment to the wooden pole were extremely frayed, and the Rebbe took needle and thread in hand and re-sewed the stitches. He then rolled the Sefer Torah to the end of Devarim, and made the same repairs to the frayed stitches at the end. He returned the Sefer Torah to the Aron Kodesh and then returned to the hospital.

He quietly slipped back into his bed, unnoticed, even though earlier in the evening shortly after he had "escaped", the medical staff had been shocked to find his bed empty, and had conducted an unsuccessful search. The Rebbe had vanished!

The next morning, when the surgeon came to check on him shortly before the scheduled surgery, the Rebbe surprised him by saying, "I'd like you to check my legs again." The doctor felt it was an exercise in futility. The Rebbe responded firmly, "If you do not re-examine my legs, I will not agree to have this operation under any circumstances!"

The doctor took this as an affront to his professional reputation. The situation was saved by R' Nosson, one of the hospital administrators, a pious Jew who had been a chasid of the Rebbe's father. He convinced the surgeon to re-examine the Rebbe's legs.

The doctor was astounded. A slight improvement was clearly evident. The infection was receding. Amputation was no longer urgent. Conservative treatment using ointments and bandages was recommended instead. Several days later, the Rebbe was released from the hospital - walking on his own two feet!

The Rebbe later told his stunned family, "Why are you surprised? When I made a cheshbon nefesh, I remembered that I had known that the parchment panels of one of the Sifrei Torah in the Beis Medrash had been detached from the wooden poles for some time. I wanted to deal with this at once, but because of my busy schedule, I did not manage to get around to it.

"I thought to myself: G-D deals with us measure for measure. I neglected to attach the Sefer Torah to its 'feet' - so I, the one responsible, was struck with an appropriate consequence. It was as though the Heavenly Judgment was crying out, 'Just as you did not attach the atzei Chayim poles, so, too, will your legs be detached from your body!' So I hurried over to quickly make the repairs. And, indeed, when the end parchments were properly attached to the Torah, my legs were no longer in danger of being cut off!"

Why This Week? The 2nd Parsha of the double reading, Vayelach, describes how the very first Torah scroll ever was handled and protected.

Biographic note:
Rabbi Yitzchak-Isaac Rosenbaum of Zutchka [21 Tevet 5666/1905 - 14 Tammuz 5760/2000] was named after his holy ancestor, Rebbe Yitzchak Isaac of Komarno. He experienced many miracles during the Holocaust, often marvelling at how he was able to save all his children, some of whom had been captured by the Nazis. In the late 1940's he emigrated and settled in Boro Park, Brooklyn, until 1973, when his holy father, Rabbi Issamar Rosenbaum, passed away in Tel Aviv. Soon thereafter he moved to Israel to take his father's place. In 1981, he opened his own Beis Medrash/shul in Bnei Brak. (based on NerTamid.com)

Footnotes:
[1] Rabbi Issamar Rosenbaum [1886 - 22 Sivan 1973], was a Rebbe in Europe since age 15. After WWII he lived in the USA for 20 years. In 1969 he moved to the Land of Israel, settling in the Yad Eliyahu neighborhood of Tel Aviv, and soon was considered the elder of the various Nadvorna and Kretchnif Rebbes in Israel. The Worth of a Baal-Shem-Tov Book by Rabbi Yerachmiel Tilles

https://ascentofsafed.com/Stories/Stories/5786/1498-49.html

[Preface: Many know that "Chai (18th) Elul" celebrates the birth of the Baal Shem Tov [and the birth in 1745 of Rabbi Shneur-Zalman, founder of Chabad Chassidus, 47 years later], yet do not realize that it also celebrates two other major events in the Besht's life.

1) On Chai Elul 1724, at age 26, he was blessed from Heaven with a spiritual advisor and mentor, Achiya Hashiloni (who lived around the time of King David ).
2) On Chai Elul 1734, at age 36, he was ordered by his Heavenly mentor to reveal his acquired greatness (which for ten years he had kept hidden), which led to his becoming the founder of the Chasidic movement.
Our Chai Elul story this year reveals a direct repercussion of these latter two enormously significant events, which occurred twenty years after the Besht's passing in1760.]

* * * * *

Rabbi Yaakov-Yosef of Polnoye was one of the greatest disciples of the Baal Shem Tov [acronym: the Besht] . He was the first person to publish a Sefer [(holy) book] containing the teachings of his Rebbe, the Besht. He chose to name his book, "Toldos Yaakov Yosef," which he wrote and published (in the year 5540/1780).

Since the entire purpose of publishing the book was to spread these teachings, he undertook the difficult task of personally traveling from town to town and selling it.

One day, R. Yaakov Yosef arrived in the town of Zhitomir, which was known as being a Chassidic community. He made his way to the local marketplace, opened a box displaying the holy books he had brought, and announced that they were for sale. "This Sefer contains the teachings of my holy teacher, the Baal Shem Tov!" he proclaimed.

Hearing his announcement, many people rushed over, eager to buy the prized book. "What does it cost?" they asked. R. Yaakov Yosef specified a certain amount.

The townspeople were not all that pleased. "That price is much too high, even for such an important Sefer," they declared. "A book of this size is never sold for even close to such a sum!" R. Yaakov Yosef refused to budge. When they saw that they could not convince him to lower his price, they walked away disappointed.

R. Yaakov Yosef was beside himself. "How can it be that no one appreciates the true value of my master's teachings?" he thought. "Yes, my Sefer is more expensive than other books, but the Baal Shem Tov's teachings are worth even more than what I am asking for! Many of the people here are chasidim, and they should appreciate its value!"

The hours passed, and R. Yaakov Yosef had yet to sell a single book. His frustration mounted with every passing moment, to the point that he could no longer contain himself. "This demonstrates a lack of respect for the Baal Shem Tov!" he rebuked the townspeople sharply. "You deserve to be severely punished!"

The residents were taken aback at these strong words, fearing that they might, chas v'shalom ('Heaven forbid!'), cause negative consequences. Nervously, they hurried to their rabbi, Rabbi Velvel of Zhitomir, and told him what had happened. Reb Velvel immediately understood that the seller was none other than the Tzadik R. Yaakov Yosef himself, whom he had not seen for some time. He hurriedly made his way to the marketplace to appease R. Yaakov Yosef.

"How many books do you have for sale?" R. Velvel asked him. "How much do they cost?"

R. Yaakov Yosef named his price, and R. Velvel - whom R. Yaakov Yosef did not yet recognize - proceeded to purchase every single book available for sale. "What a fair price this is!" He then made sure to add, "After all, the teachings of the Baal Shem Tov are truly priceless. What a bargain!"

Thankfully, R. Yaakov Yosef was no longer visibly upset at the townspeople. After all, at least one individual in town had appreciated the book's value and had bought all the books he had with him at the time! Thus R. Velvel succeeded in averting the punishment that could have resulted from the Tzadik’s displeasure.

R. Yaakov Yosef agreed with R. Velvel wholeheartedly. "Indeed, this Sefer is worth much more than the amount I'm asking for. However," he added sadly, "no one else in town wants to buy it, even at this bargain price. Evidently, they don't understand its true value!"

"You are correct," R. Velvel replied. "The people here apparently don't recognize the true value of the Sefer. But Rebbe, may I ask you a question?"

"With pleasure," replied R. Yaakov Yosef.

"Before G-D gave us the Torah," said R. Velvel, "we are taught that He offered it to all the nations of the world, and each nation declined the offer. Nevertheless, He didn't display any sign of displeasure. He didn't threaten to destroy them or punish them. Shouldn't a servant be just like his master?!"

R. Yaakov Yosef understood the point the buyer was conveying, which led him to realize that this person was no simple Jew. Among special followers of the Maggid was a chasid who was known as "Velvel the Sharp-witted One," he said with a smile. "Can it be that you are none other than that disciple?"

"I indeed have the merit of being a follower of my great master and teacher, the holy Maggid," R. Velvel answered humbly, "and they called me Velvel."

Why This Week? "Chai (18th) Elul" [2026: Sunday night-Monday, Aug. 30-31] celebrates the date of the birth of the Baal Shem Tov in 1760]; the date in 1724 he received a Heavenly mentor; and the date in 1734, at age 36, when he was commanded from Heaven mentor to reveal his true greatness. (Also, it is the birthdate of the Alter Rebbe of Chabad in 1745 and the date of passing of the Maharal of Prague [1512-1609].)

Biographical notes:
Rabbi Yaakov Yosef HaKohain of Polnoye [5470 - 24 Tishrei 5542* (1710 - Oct. 1781)] was one of the earliest and closest rabbinical disciples of the Baal Shem Tov. He was the first person to author a book of Chassidic teachings, titled Toldos Yaakov Yosef, which had a revolutionary effect upon publication. Subsequently, he published two other Chassidic classics, Ben Porat Yosef and Ketones Passim. These three books, in which he said many hundreds of times (249 times in 'Toldos' alone), "I heard from my teacher, My master, that…", were the chief printed sources for teachings in the name of the Baal Shem Tov.
* Not certain--some say 5544 (1783) and some say 5551 (1790).

Rabbi [Benyamin] Ze'ev-Wolf of Zhitomir [? - Purim 5560 (? - March 1798], the third son of Rabbi Yechiel-Michil of Zlotchov, was one of the inner circle of disciples of the Maggid of Mezritch. Famous for his sincerity and his exceptional love of his fellow Jews, including the irreligious, he is the author of Ohr Hameir, known for its wealth of material on the history of Chasidism and the teachings of its founders.

Footnotes:
1]Achiya Hashiloni HaKohain was a prophet in the generation after King David, and transmitted to Elijah the Prophet for the next generation (Rambam--Mishna Torah, Introduction). He is said to have lived nearly 600 years
2] The Maggid of Mezritch, successor of the Baal Shem Tov.
3\Rabbi Yitzchak Horowitz = "The Diligent" [1885-1942, hy'a], an exalted chasid of the 5th & 6th Lubavitch Rebbes HaRashab & HaRayatz.

Katz said Israel is prepared both defensively and offensively for a possible attack and that the Israel Defense Forces is ready to respond. He added there were signs that mounting economic pressure in Iran and fears of an uprising could push Tehran to take “desperate measures,” according to the Times of Israel.

Before Rosh Hashanah one should check his actions: Cause:

THE IDF IS RUN BY A BUNCH OF FOOLS. Females are not allowed near Charedi Soldiers whom they want to draft but Hesder Yeshiva students are expected to sit in the same APC with a female soldier. HAVE THEY LOST THEIR MINDS? – and then you wonder why the Charedim don’t want to be in the anti-religious IDF. Eleven of the 16 Hesder soldiers from the Givati Brigade's Rotem Battalion who were sent to military prison after refusing to board an APC with a female paramedic, will be released Friday morning after serving five days behind bars. https://www.israelnationalnews.com/news/432703

Remember I was in the IDF and have been in situations with other religious soldiers including answering a phone call from Tanzania on Shabbos for a Kibbutznik. I did so for it was the only emergency number like 911 in the US, 101 for Medical in Israel, etc.
