Parsha Bamidbar 2/3 Parsha Naso 1 Perkei Avos Chapter 2 continued Stories

Kyla Bat Chana needs prayers.

Parsha Bamidbar Part 2

I wanted to touch on Rashi and the work of Leviim in the Mishkan. It is also appropriate that I join this with Naso as the last third of the house of Levi is dealt in Parsha Naso.

2:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying: 2 ‘The children of Israel shall pitch by their fathers’ houses; every man with his own standard, according to the ensigns; a good way off shall they pitch round about the tent of meeting. 3Now those that pitch  on the east side toward the sunrising shall be they of the standard of the camp of Judah, according to their hosts; the prince of the children of Judah being Nahshon the son of Amminadab, … 31 all that were numbered of the camp of Dan being a hundred thousand and fifty and seven thousand and six hundred; they shall set forth hindmost by their standards.’

The tribes were divided for encampment and their hosts number and as I mentioned last week the front line was in the east and the rear in west.

32 These are they that were numbered of the children of Israel by their fathers’ houses; all that were numbered of the camps according to their hosts were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty. 33 But the Levites were not numbered among the children of Israel; as the LORD commanded Moses.

Throughout the centuries the number of our people being an enlightenment for the world has always been relatively small but with big impact. To be a light unto the nations one does not have to be massive in numbers but in quality. We see approximately the same number of men for the army at the end of the 40 years as that at the start. Each Ben Yisrael a treasure to HASHEM to be counted.

34 Thus did the children of Israel: according to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so they pitched by their standards, and so they set forward, each one according to its families, and according to its fathers’ houses.

The tribes were set together among friendly brothers. Thus the children of Rachel were together and in the east the younger three children of Leah with two more children of Leah and Gad in the south and in the north the children of the two concubines.

3:1 Now these are the generations of Aaron and Moses in the day that the LORD spoke with Moses in mount Sinai. 2 And these are the names of the sons of Aaron: Nadab the first-born, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. 3 These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the priests that were anointed, whom he consecrated to minister in the priest’s office. 4 And Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD, when they offered strange fire before the LORD, in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children; and Eleazar and Ithamar ministered in the priest’s office in the presence of Aaron their father.

Before going into the Leviim the Torah goes into the genealogy of the Cohanim.

5 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 6 ‘Bring the tribe of Levi near, and set them before Aaron the priest, that they may minister unto him. 7 And they shall keep his charge, and the charge of the whole congregation before the tent of meeting, to do the service of the tabernacle. 8 And they shall keep all the furniture of the tent of meeting, and the charge of the children of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle. 9 And thou shalt give the Levites unto Aaron and to his sons; they are wholly given unto him from the children of Israel. 10 And thou shalt appoint Aaron and his sons, that they may keep their priesthood; and the common man that draws nigh shall be put to death.’

This goes for a Levi too.

17 And the LORD spoke unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying: 18 ‘Cut ye not off the tribe of the families of the Kohathites from among the Levites; 19 but thus do unto them, that they may live, and not die, when they approach unto the most holy things: Aaron and his sons shall go in, and appoint them every one to his service and to his burden; 20 but they shall not go in to see the holy things as they are being covered, lest they die.

They shall not come in to see when the holy [vessels] are being wrapped up: In their covering, as I explained above in this section: They shall spread such and such a cloth over it, and cover it with such and such a cover. The wrapping up of it [mentioned here] is identical with the covering [mentioned above].

To be continued next week
Parsha Naso Part 1

Naso is the longest Parsha in the Torah but not as hard as one might think as the gifts of the 12 tribes are dear to HASHEM and they repeat 12 times adding to the length.

4:21 And the LORD spoke unto Moses saying: 22 ‘Take the sum of the sons of Gershon also, by their fathers’ houses, by their families; 23 from thirty years old and upward until fifty years old shalt thou number them: all that enter in to wait upon the service, to do service in the tent of meeting. 24 This is the service of the families of the Gershonites, in serving and in bearing burdens: … 29 As for the sons of Merari, thou shalt number them by their families, by their fathers’ houses; 30 from thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old shalt thou number them, every one that enters upon the service, to do the work of the tent of meeting. 31 And this is the charge of their burden, according to all their service in the tent of meeting: the boards of the tabernacle, and the bars thereof, and the pillars thereof, and the sockets thereof;  49 According to the commandment of the LORD they were appointed by the hand of Moses, every one to his service, and to his burden; they were also numbered, as the LORD commanded Moses.

Details to be explained Ble Neder next week.

5:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 ‘Command the children of Israel, that they put out of the camp every leper, and every one that hath an issue, and whosoever is unclean by the dead; 3 both male and female shall ye put out, without the camp shall ye put them; that they defile not their camp, in the midst whereof I dwell.’ 4 And the children of Israel did so, and put them out without the camp; as the LORD spoke unto Moses, so did the children of Israel.
5 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 6 Speak unto the children of Israel: When a man or woman shall commit any sin that men commit, to commit a trespass against the LORD, and that soul be guilty; 7 then they shall confess their sin which they have done; and he shall make restitution for his guilt in full, and add unto it the fifth part thereof, and give it unto him in respect of whom he hath been guilty.

Shavuous was the first time I had to read a fraction of the Zohar. In the Daf Yomi Zohar by Rebbe Gross Shlita, it states that when one sins the sin separates the Vav from the Hay in the DIVINE NAME. The Hay is reinforced if one does Teshuva and returns and refrains from sin. The Vav is restored with complete Teshuva from love and the encouragement of others to refrain from such a sin.

8 But if the man have no kinsman to whom restitution may be made for the guilt, the restitution for guilt which is made shall be the LORD’S, even the priest’s; besides the ram of the atonement, whereby atonement shall be made for him. 9 And every heave-offering of all the holy things of the children of Israel, which they present unto the priest, shall be his. 10 And every man’s hallowed things shall be his: whatsoever any man giveth the priest, it shall be his.

The taking over of a person’s property for his good is recognized and it is possible to use for the good of the State if a person is a Ger without a wife or a husband and family. Jews usually had some heir from some relative.
To be continued and revived next week.

I have been told by Menashe’s teachers that he has the potential to lead tens of thousands of Yisrael. So although from time to time I a putting him in my teaching and guiding him above a few thousand readers, the payment may come in the future of making a new Gadol B’ Torah B’ Am Yisrael. So next week hopefully, I will get to the task of the Leviim and Parsha Sotah and Nazir.

The Life of an American Yeshiva Student in Jerusalem during the Six-Day War by Rabbi Yerachmiel Tilles http://ascentofsafed.com/cgi-bin/ascent.cgi?Name=913-36
Our Yeshiva was next to the border and we had a huge backyard; the IDF took over our yard, dug three huge foxholes and put three large mortar guns into them. Connection: Seasonal – Last week was Jerusalem Liberation Day

In the War of Israel’s Independence in 1948, the Arabs signed a treaty that even though they would not let Jews live in their own capital-Jerusalem–they would let the Jews visit their holiest site – the Holy Wall.

Guess what?
From 1948 till the great Miracle of the “6 Day War” in June of 1967, no Jews were allowed to visit the Holy Wall.

In 1967 I was a young rabbinical student going to Yeshiva in Jerusalem.

Schwartzie is 3rd from right (june 1967)
At that time, the capital City, Jerusalem, was surrounded on three sides by the “newly” artificially created, fictitious country of Jordan.
My parents, who were very big Zionists, nevertheless contacted me that maybe I should move to Tel Aviv bcz it was safer (war was imminent).
Like most Yeshivas, we had a very full morny ing to night schedule. But Friday afternoon, before Shabbat , we were “off”. What does a rabbinical student do in his time off? It wasn’t RC (Religiously Correct) to go to the movies or a bar or disco, etc. But just 5 blocks away was the famous Mandelbaum Gate. That was a crossing from Jordan into Israel. We stood as close as we could get, on the Israeli side, & stared at the Jordanian Legionnaires (Enemy soldiers) in their spiffy uniforms and rifles, etc.
Being that we were so close to the border and we had a Huge backyard, the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) took over our backyard, dug three huge foxholes & put 3 large mortar guns in the foxholes. About 40 soldiers moved into our yard for the two weeks before the War. You must understand that since we were so close to the border one didn’t have to aim. Mortar shells could just be lobbed in the general direction of Israel/Jordan & you are sure to hit the “enemy”.
The American Embassy sent a memo, then a second and then a “Final Notice” to all American Citizens in Israel. It was actually pretty awesome. It went something like; “WAR is imminent! No transportation will be provided! Leave the Country NOW!”
Short, direct & to the point.
What many don’t know is that at that time the airport was crowded with Americans trying to leave. The religious Orthodox Americans had a serious moral dilemma: What to do?
We Chasidim – disciples / followers / devotees, of our great Spiritual Moses icon – the Lubavitcher Rebbe, also weren’t sure. I’m an only son, born to elderly parents post-Holocaust, after they found out that most of their sibs & their spouses & their children were murdered. Three of my 4 Grandparents were murdered by the Nazis. I began to entertain pessimistic ideas about someone ringing my doorbell back in Atlantic City where I was born & telling my mom the bad news about her 21 y/o only son, killed in the most recent war in Israel.
In my Yeshiva there were four fellows from the US. Although we weren’t related, we each received a telegram from our folks back home. Basically they were all the same: “Son, come home!!!”
So we composed a telegram to the Rebbe & signed our names. We simply said, we don’t know what to do. But we are your Chasidim so we will happily do whatever you advise.
His reply to us was printed on the FRONT PAGE of the Maariv Newspaper (which is still today the #1 or 2 top secular daily newspaper in the country)!
The answer was short, to the point AND quite uplifting. The Israeli Government, citing Security measures, stopped the newspapers from printing the story about the Airport being crowded with Americans trying to “escape” the War, inc Many Yeshiva students. So I guess the Government thought this telegram would be a good shot in the arm to pump up the morale of the populace & stop the panic fleeing, etc. And Maariv found it newsworthy enough to print it on PAGE ONE!
Rebbe’s telegram text follows:
“Continue studying diligently. ‘The Guardian of Israel (G-d), neither slumbers nor sleeps.’ We will hear good news.”
After that (virtually) no Chasidim or even Orthodox Jews left Israel.
A week later (on the Sunday before the War), a large cattle truck pulled up in front of our Yeshiva & asked for volunteers for Non combat work. I along with another 30 from the Yeshiva student body got in that dirty cattle truck with absolutely no idea where we were going or what we were supposed to do.
But, being Chasidim, we trusted in the Rebbe’s Blessings & became even enthusiastic about the War Effort.
Turns out that there were some new apartment buildings that didn’t have a shelter. But they were right on the border, next to a huge open field that led to Jordan. We were informed that it was now our job to dig trenches for the ppl in the new apartments.
I learned something:
Before you dig trenches – you gotta remove the larger rocks in the field. But they didn’t give us Gloves. After a few hours, all our hands were bleeding.
There was one soldier with a pistol & us 30 Torah scholars. It was EZ to tell he really didn’t like babysitting us young Orthodox spoiled Americans. Around noon I noticed that he was standing @ the end of the property & there was a line of boys looking thru his army binoculars at Jordan. I got in line. At my turn I saw that the “abandoned” buildings, in Jordan (about a block away), had a nice amount of ppl on the roof of the second story & they were looking at us with binoculars.
At this point I suggested we break for lunch. After a really dirty look from my commanding officer, he barked, “just keep working”.
At this time, the trenches were about knee deep. About 10 minutes later, for the very first time in my life, I heard & experienced the sound of machine gun fire directed at ME.
All of us jumped into the freshly dug trenches (which we earned by the BLOOD of our hands). During those exciting moments, I started entertaining once again some more pessimistic thoughts. One strange one was:
If there was to be a WAR, it kinda almost did NOT matter who won. Bcz even if Israel won, that wouldn’t necessarily concern us. Our new neighbors could so easily just walk the one block & go Bang Bang, & take out us 30 unarmed Yeshiva boys, & we wouldn’t even know that Israel won.
There was kinda nothing to do as the small arms fire got more intense towards us. I hate not being pro-active at a time like that. So I got this idea & started singing an uplifting happy hasidic melody. Immediately the rest of the students joined me.
Our commanding Officer went ballistic. I don’t really know what he screamed @ us in Hebrew. But I just responded that the Jordanian soldiers know our position, so what difference does it make?
Truth to tell, we were so far away from the main part of the City, on the desolate outskirts, that we weren’t sure that anyone knew we were alive or that we were being fired upon.
Thank G-d Almighty, after 10 minutes, we heard returning fire from Israel. After another 5 minutes, it got quiet. Then Israeli army jeeps with huge machine guns in the back pulled up, into the dirt field, about a 1/2 block away. We were told to CRAWL in the dirt of the field (nothing I was really used to) with a soldier to where the jeeps were. That was the day B4 the War.

For two weeks before the war, every AM, we Yeshiva students would go out to the large field/bkyrd & put Tefilin on the soldiers. We got to know some of them & made new friends. (More ABT tht later–Remind me.)
Since the large Yeshiva building was so close to the border, it was taken over by the Israeli Civil Defense org. That meant that every night, all night, someone had to babysit the phone. The night before the war it was my turn. But they never really told us what to do IF the phone rang.
So now it’s 3 AM, Jerusalem is deathly quiet & I’m sitting in the office alone. Suddenly I have a moment of self doubt. I thought that the phone rang. Did it really? I thought to myself – what should I do? If I do NOT answer the phone does this mean that there’s NOT gonna be a War?
Then, I clearly & distinctly heard the phone ring again. Yep – the phone really was ringing. I kinda felt that I had no choice & picked up the receiver. “Hello?” I said.
The operator on the line said (in that distinctive almost obnoxious traditional standard operator voice), “We have a person to person call from Atlantic City New Jersey for Shlomo Schwartz”. Now I knew that I was hallucinating. I could barely get out the single word “speaking”.
It was my parents from Jersey wanting to know “Whassup?”.
So I told them that it was all a bunch of hype & the media was blowing it all out of proportion, & everything was really just fine & dandy.
It was a great call & I felt great about reassuring my family.
A few hours later, as every AM for the last two weeks, we were in the big field, hanging out with our new friends, putting on Tefilin with the lovely young soldiers, in what was to become known as the historically famous “Six Day War”.

Chapter 2 Mishnah 8. Rabban Yochanan the son of Zakkai received the tradition from Hillel and Shammai. He would say: If you have learned much Torah, do not take credit for yourself---it is for this that you have been formed.

It would be possible for me not to infringe on copy write and to translate thusly “Rabban Yochanan ben Zackai received an oral Kabbala from Hillel and Shammai as this was the transmission students were given to memorize all 6 Sedarim of Mishnah from their Rabbis. The purpose a person is put on to this earth is more than animalistically eat, sleep and procreate but to make the mundane holy. Now go and reflect that if you are not learning and transmitting to your son (daughter) or grandchild something from the Torah you are not fulfilling the purpose of creation.

What happens if you are childless? My son Chaim told me a story of the Lubavitcher Rebbe. Once there were a number of men who did not have any children. They were invited to the Rebbe for a Le Chaim and Bracha. The Rebbe said those who raise a glass and drink now will have a child within a year. The Rebbe called out Ploni (a certain man) and said to him, do not raise your glass just yet. Your mission and my mission in this world is different. We will have many Talmidim as our children but our mission is not to have children. [May this also resonate with my friend Rabbi A. L. Shlita who has also a different mission from HASHEM in this world with helping the people who are ill and many others in Borough Park.]

9. Rabban Yochanan the son of Zakkai had five disciples: Rabbi Eliezer the son of Hurkenus, Rabbi Joshua the son of Chananya, Rabbi Yossei the Kohen, Rabbi Shimon the son of Nethanel, and Rabbi Elazar the son of Arach. He would recount their praises: Rabbi Eliezer the son of Hurkenus is a cemented cistern that loses not a drop; Rabbi Joshua the son of Chananya---fortunate is she who gave birth to him; Rabbi Yossei the Kohen---a chassid (pious one); Rabbi Shimon the son of Nethanel fears sin; Rabbi Elazar ben Arach is as an ever-increasing wellspring.

The types of students recognizes the various ways one can learn Torah. Rabban and his five Talmidim are buried together in the old cemetery in Tiberius.

[Rabbi Yochanan] used to say: If all the sages of Israel were to be in one cup of a balance-scale, and Eliezer the son of Hurkenus were in the other, he would outweigh them all. Abba Shaul said in his name: If all the sages of Israel were to be in one cup of a balance-scale, Eliezer the son of Hurkenus included, and Elazar the son of Arach were in the other, he would outweigh them all.

Why did Abba Shaul make this statement? We see in the stories of our Sages Talmud Bavli Berachos, Rosh Hashanah, Gittin and others that Rabbi Yoshua was a practical example to all. Rabbi Eliezer could teach and repeat all what he learned. However their knowledge ends and their Pasakei Dinim are only based on what they know. Rabbi Elazar ben Arach was able to deduce things that were missing. I can tell you how I do it and here is an example {many years ago I read in either Meseches Arachim or Sanhedrin} that Esav made using the NAME many creatures like a half man – half fish. This is genetic engineering. Let us view the opinion of Esav and this act by the Rabbis. Is it in a positive or negative manner and why? After analyzing the literature, I can only come to the conclusion regarding rape seed and canola oil. 1) It is not forbidden on Pessach (2) I view genetic engineer outside of saving a life as forbidden for commercial use. This is prior to seeing a higher authistic rate.

10. [Rabbi Yochanan] said to them: Go and see which is the best trait for a person to acquire. Said Rabbi Eliezer: A good eye. Said Rabbi Joshua: A good friend. Said Rabbi Yossei: A good neighbor. Said Rabbi Shimon: To see what is born [out of ones actions]. Said Rabbi Elazar: A good heart. Said He to them: I prefer the words of Elazar the son of Arach to yours, for his words include all of yours.
He said to them: Go and see which is the worst trait, the one that a person should most distance himself from. Said Rabbi Eliezer: An evil eye. Said Rabbi Joshua: An evil friend. Said Rabbi Yossei: An evil neighbor. Said Rabbi Shimon: To borrow and not to repay; for one who borrows from man is as one who borrows from the Almighty, as is stated, ``The wicked man borrows and does not repay; but the righteous one is benevolent and gives’’ (Psalms 37:21). Said Rabbi Elazar: An evil heart. Said He to them: I prefer the word of Elazar the son of Arach to yours, for his words include all of yours.
They would each say three things:
Rabbi Eliezer would say: The honor of your fellow should be as precious to you as your own, and do not be easy to anger. Repent one day before your death.** Warm yourself by the fire of the sages, but be beware lest you be burned by its embers; for their bite is the bite of a fox, their sting is the sting of a scorpion, their hiss is the hiss a serpent, and all their words are like fiery coals.
** “Rabbi Eliezer would say: Repent one day before your death. Asked his disciples: Does a man know on which day he will die? Said he to them: So being the case, he should repent today, for perhaps tomorrow he will die; hence, all his days are passed in a state of repentance. Indeed, so said Solomon in his wisdom (Ecclesiastes 9:8): ‘At all times, your clothes should be white, and oil should not lack from your head’” (Talmud, Shabbat 153a).

Gail sent me this article by Herb Keinon: Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely swept into her new office on Thursday using religious-based arguments and telling ministry employees all of the Land of Israel belongs to the Jews.
Hotovely, who served as deputy transportation minister in the last government, reworked one of the slogans her previous ministry made well known: “On the road, don’t be right, be smart.”
Hotovely’s words were also broadcast to Israel’s 106 representations abroad.
“The international community deals with considerations of justice and morality,” she said. “We need to return to the basic truth of our right to this land.”
Hotovely quoted the late journalist and settlement leader Uri Elitzur as saying that for the last 40 years, while the Palestinians were demanding their lands, Israel responded that: “We have strategic interests and security concerns.”
Those arguments, she said, were the arguments of a robber.
“If I wear your coat because I’m cold, and I can prove pragmatically and analytically that it really is cold for me, the world will ask a primitive and analytic question: Who does the coat belong to? In this context, it is important to say that this coat is ours, this country is ours, all of it. We didn’t come here to apologize for that.”
Hotovely said the world understands Israel’s security needs, but arguments based on justice and morality always trump those dealing with security concerns.
She also quoted from an interview former foreign minister Shlomo Ben-Ami gave following the breakdown of the Camp David talks in 2000. Ben-Ami, who was Labor’s foreign minister under Ehud Barak, said it was impossible for him to shake the impression that more than the Palestinians want a solution to the conflict, they want to put Israel in the defendant’s dock.
“More than they want a state of their own, they want to throw us out of our own. In the deepest sense possible this is a negative ethos,” she said, quoting Ben-Ami. “That is why, as opposed to the Zionists, they are unable to compromise, because they don’t have an image of a society in the future for which it is worth compromising.”
The deputy minister ended her comments by quoting from Rashi, the famed medieval commentator, on the first line of the Torah. The reason the Torah began with the story of creation, Rashi explained, was so that when the world would call Israel robbers for having stolen the Land of Israel from others, the Jews would be able to answer that the land belongs to God, and that he gave it to whom he desired.
“If the Jews were convinced in the righteousness of their path, and that is their land, they would manage with the world,” she said, quoting Rabbi Yehuda Leon Ashkenazi, one of the leaders of French Jewry in the last century.
Hotovely told the workers, many of them demoralized that various aspects of Israel’s diplomacy has been parceled off to different ministries, that she would fight to help the ministry restore its status as the central arm of Israeli diplomacy.
Hotovely’s comments came the same day that the French newspaper Le Figaro reported that a proposed French UN Security Council draft resolution, being drawn up with New Zealand, sets an 18-month deadline for completion of negotiations leading to a Palestinian state.
The Guardian reported that leaking the details of the draft now “appears designed to put pressure on Netanyahu’s new right-wing government – in which opponents of a two-state solution hold prominent positions – to return to talks.”
President Reuven Rivlin, who in the past was a prominent opponent to a two-state solution,
met Thursday with EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini and reiterated the commitment Netanyahu made a day earlier to a two-state solution.
Israel knows the importance of the role Europe takes in trying to bring the 150-year-old conflict between Israel and the Palestinians to an end, he said.
Rivlin said he was confident the conflict could be overcome with the help of sincere elements from the Western world, but emphasized that in the final analysis, it can be resolved only by an agreement reached by the two parties themselves.
Referring to Netanyahu’s comments a day earlier, Rivlin said all of Israel and “the whole world” heard it.
Mogherini was accompanied during her two-day visit by Fernando, the EU’s new envoy to the Middle East Peace Process. Unlike former EU envoys who traveled back and forth from Europe, Gentilini is expected to be permanently based in Israel. Greer Fay Cashman contributed to this report.
