FYI: I get prayer requests for healing from all over including Gentiles. The Crofts family and Tess McNamara were among some received. And we all want a healthy world.

Parsha Miketz Part 2

Last week I wrote the follow “Svara” (guestimate): 17 And he put them all together into ward three days. I haven’t read the Medrash in years but it appears to me that this was the time that Yosef was in the pit. Menashe, my nephew, saw the commentary of Rabbi Yacov Baal HaTurim stating that the three days were for three things that the brothers did to Yosef. They removed his coat of many colors, threw in the pit and the third reason is that the sold him. Now my Svara might be correct the narration of the story does not tell the time period but it appears to be one day or so and no longer from the Pshat.

Continuing from where we left off, the brothers are now home minus Shimon.

43:1 And the famine was sore in the land. 2 And it came to pass, when they had eaten up the corn which they had brought out of Egypt, that their father said unto them: 'Go again, buy us a little food.'

They took to Yacov as much as they could on their animals but eventually the grain is used up.

3 And Judah spoke unto him, saying: 'The man did earnestly forewarn us, saying: Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you. 4 If thou wilt send our brother with us, we will go down and buy thee food;

He spoke honestly with us.

5 but if thou wilt not send him, we will not go down, for the man said unto us: Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.' 6 And Israel said: 'Wherefore dealt ye so ill with me, as to tell the man whether ye had yet a brother?'

Why did you tell him that you had another brother?

7 And they said: 'The man asked straitly concerning ourselves, and concerning our kindred, saying: Is your father yet alive? have you another brother? and we told him according to the tenor of these words; could we in any wise know that he would say: Bring your brother down?'

The man asked if their father was still alive and if we had a brother. Could we have known that he would demand that we bring out younger brother.

8 And Judah said unto Israel his father: 'Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go, that we may live, and not die, both we, and thou, and also our little ones.

If you do not send him, both we, you and your grandchildren will perish and then what has made your life worth living?

9 I will be surety for him; of my hand shalt thou require him; if I bring him not unto thee, and set him before thee, then let me bear the blame forever.

I pledge my Olam HaBa (next world) as surety that I will bring him back otherwise I will be lost both in this world and the next.

10 For except we had lingered, surely we had now returned a second time.' 11 And their father Israel said unto them: 'If it be so now, do this: take of the choice fruits of the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spicery and ladanum, nuts, and almonds;

The brothers now will return to Egypt with Benyamin and goodies such as almonds and rare spices and foods from Eretz Yisrael and perhaps the East (India, Iraq, etc.).

12 and take double money in your hand; and the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks carry back in your hand; peradventure it was an oversight;

Make sure that you have enough money so that you will not be accused of being thieves I don’t need my sons in jail for being spies and thieves.

13 take also your brother, and arise, go again unto the man;

Now take Benyamin but guard him carefully.

14 and God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may release unto you your other brother and Benjamin. And as for me, if I be bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.'

One of Benyamin’s great-great…great grandchildren named Esther will say a similar thing before meeting Achashveros. 4:16 'Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day; I also and my maidens will fast in like manner; and so, will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law; and if I perish, I perish.'

15 And the men took that present, and they took double money in their hand, and Benjamin; and rose up, and went down to Egypt, and stood before Joseph. 16 And when Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house: 'Bring the men into the house, and kill the beasts, and prepare the meat; for the men shall dine with me at noon.' 17 And the man did as Joseph bade; and the man brought the men into Joseph's house. 18 And the men were afraid, because they were brought into Joseph's house; and they said: 'Because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time are we brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, and fall upon us, and take us for bondmen, and our asses.' 19 And they came near to the steward of Joseph's house, and they spoke unto him at the door of the house, 20 and said: 'Oh my lord, we came indeed down at the first time to buy food. 21 And it came to pass, when we came to the lodging-place, that we opened our sacks, and, behold, every man's money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight; and we have brought it back in our hand. 22 And other money have we brought down in our hand to buy food. We know not who put our money in our sacks.' 23 And he said: 'Peace be to you, fear not; your God, and the God of your father, hath given you treasure in your sacks; I had your money.' And he brought Simeon out unto them.

Shimon is cleaned up and released from jail. He had better conditions with the jail keeper like Yosef.

24 And the man brought the men into Joseph's house, and gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he gave their asses provender.

Similar to Avraham and the Angels to wash the dust from their feet.

25 And they made ready the present against Joseph's coming at noon; for they heard that they should eat bread there. 26 And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed down to him to the earth. 27 And he asked them of their welfare, and said: 'Is your father well, the old man of whom ye spoke?

The Medrash refers to the ‘old man’ as Yitzchak but does it make sense. Yacov left Yitzchak when the old man was 123 and spent 36 years abroad making him 159. Yosef is 9 at the time. Yosef is 30 when he stands before Pharaoh and Yitzchak would be 180 then. So despite the Medrash, I go by the Pshat and the old man is 130year old Yacov.

Is he yet alive?'

Is he still alive now that (Yosef and) Benyamin is not at home?

28 And they said: 'Thy servant our father is well, he is yet alive.' And they bowed the head, and made obeisance.

11 brothers bow before Yosef.

29 And he lifted up his eyes, and saw Benjamin his brother, his mother's son, and said: 'Is this your youngest brother of whom ye spoke unto me?' And he said: 'God be gracious unto thee, my son.'

His blessing is from his heart but later, Yehuda will view this as a male slave to satisfy an evil perverse desire.

30 And Joseph made haste; for his heart yearned toward his brother; and he sought where to weep; and he entered into his chamber, and wept there. 31 And he washed his face, and came out; and he refrained himself, and said: 'Set on bread.'

Up until now, he was dealing with his half-brothers and now with his full brother.

32 And they set on for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians, that did eat with him, by themselves; because the Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an abomination unto the Egyptians.

Who wants to sit with these strange Charedi Bumkins.

33 And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth; and the men marveled one with another.

How could he know this? What magical powers does he posses?

34 And portions were taken unto them from before him; but Benjamin's portion was five times so much as any of theirs. And they drank, and were merry with him.

To test them out if they will be jealous of Benyamin but they show no such jealousy.

44:1  And he commanded the steward of his house, saying: 'Fill the men's sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man's money in his sack's mouth. 2 And put my goblet, the silver goblet, in the sack's mouth of the youngest, and his corn money.' And he did according to the word that Joseph had spoken.

Yosef is giving them the ultimate test before revealing himself.

3 As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away, they and their asses. 4 And when they were gone out of the city, and were not yet far off, Joseph said unto his steward: 'Up, follow after the men; and when thou dost overtake them, say unto them: Wherefore have ye rewarded evil for good?

Now go and accuse them as follows.

5 Is not this it in which my lord drinks, and whereby he indeed divines? ye have done evil in so doing.'

Yosef will see if they have done Teshuva. Will they abandon Benyamin like they did him or try to save a brother?

6 And he overtook them, and he spoke unto them these words. 7 And they said unto him: 'Wherefore speaks my lord such words as these? Far be it from thy servants that they should do such a thing. 8 Behold, the money, which we found in our sacks' mouths, we brought back unto thee out of the land of Canaan; how then should we steal out of thy lord's house silver or gold?

Why in the world should we steal anything seeing that we honestly brought back double the money!

9 With whomsoever of thy servants it be found, let him die, and we also will be my lord's bondmen.'

This is a remark that jumps the gun like Yacov said about his beloved Rachel and she died in childbirth.

10 And he said: 'Now also let it be according unto your words: he with whom it is found shall be my bondman; and ye shall be blameless.'

They are so sure of their honesty that they cannot imagine that their money will be returned again and the cup planted on purpose in Benyamin’s sack. You fool me once you are a fool, you fool me twice I am a fool.

11 Then they hastened, and took down every man his sack to the ground, and opened every man his sack. 12 And he searched, beginning at the eldest, and leaving off at the youngest; and the goblet was found in Benjamin's sack. 13 And they rent their clothes, and laded every man his ass, and returned to the city.

The son of the thief that stole the Teraphim from her father is up to the old family stealing business. That is what Yosef will say.

14 And Judah and his brethren came to Joseph's house, and he was yet there; and they fell before him on the ground. 15 And Joseph said unto them: 'What deed is this that ye have done? know ye not that such a man as I will indeed divine?'

I have power to know who took my cup so why did you do this?

16 And Judah said: 'What shall we say unto my lord? what shall we speak? or how shall we clear ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants; behold, we are my lord's bondmen, both we, and he also in whose hand the cup is found.'

We have sinned. However, Yehuda has trust in HASHEM that Justice will be done as he instigated the sale of Yosef, he should be the bond man. Benyamin was not part of the sale of his brother and up to now did not know of it.

17 And he said: 'Far be it from me that I should do so; the man in whose hand the goblet is found, he shall be my bondman; but as for you, get you up in peace unto your father.'

10 of you are certainly innocent but this thief the son of a thief, he is guilty. By doing this his late mother (the moon) is sort of bowing down to him = the sun and the moon and eleven stars.

Parsha Vayigash

Yehuda’s Teshuva comes though as the true brother willing to be a slave instead of Benyamin. He will not reveal to the Egyptian why he wants to be a slave. He figures out Mida Kneged Mida (measure for measure) as he sold Yosef. Up to now, Benyamin knows nothing of this for he was the baby brother left at home. He must have been about 10 at the time of the sale.

44:18  18 Then Judah came near unto him, and said: 'Oh my lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord's ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant; for thou art even as Pharaoh.

Yehuda prepares for two options to save Benyamin either plead and become a slave in his place or start using the power of HASHEM to make war on all of Mitzrayim.

19 My lord asked his servants, saying: Have ye a father, or a brother? 20 And we said unto my lord: We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loves him. 21 And thou said unto thy servants: Bring him down unto me, that I may set mine eyes upon him. 22 And we said unto my lord: The lad cannot leave his father; for if he should leave his father, his father would die. 23 And thou said unto thy servants: Except your youngest brother come down with you, ye shall see my face no more.

Your servant our father cost Yosef years off his life as he could have lived to 120years but he did not reply I need not take the old man from retirement to be my servant.

24 And it came to pass when we came up unto thy servant my father, we told him the words of my lord. 25 And our father said: Go again, buy us a little food. 26 And we said: We cannot go down; if our youngest brother be with us, then will we go down; for we may not see the man's face, except our youngest brother be with us. 27 And thy servant my father said unto us: Ye know that my wife bore me two sons; 28 and the one went out from me, and I said: Surely, he is torn in pieces; and I have not seen him since; 29 and if ye take this one also from me, and harm befall him, ye will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave. 30 Now therefore when I come to thy servant my father, and the lad is not with us; seeing that his soul is bound up with the lad's soul;

My father will die if he is not coming home.

31 it will come to pass, when he sees that the lad is not with us, that he will die; and thy servants will bring down the gray hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to the grave. 32 For thy servant became surety for the lad unto my father, saying: If I bring him not unto thee, then shall I bear the blame to my father forever.

Both in this world and in the next.

33 Now therefore, let thy servant, I pray thee, abide instead of the lad a bondman to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brethren.

I suggested selling my brother to slavery and I deserve what comes upon as my Tikkun please leave the innocent Benyamin out of this.

34 For how shall I go up to my father, if the lad be not with me? lest I look upon the evil that shall come on my father.'

Please I beg you for the sake of my father.

45:1 Then Joseph could not refrain himself before all them that stood by him; and he cried: 'Cause every man to go out from me.' And there stood no man with him, while Joseph made himself known unto his brethren.

He asked the interpreter and his staff to leave the room as he began speaking Hebrew.

2 And he wept aloud; and the Egyptians heard, and the house of Pharaoh heard.

Pharaoh had spied all the time on Yosef for just in case. The translator over heard the conversation.

3 And Joseph said unto his brethren: 'I am Joseph; doth my father yet live?' And his brethren could not answer him; for they were affrighted at his presence.

See I am not Arel (uncircumcised)  I have a Bris. This has a double meaning simply if his father is alive and if my father did not die when you sold me is his life a life? (rebuke)

4 And Joseph said unto his brethren: 'Come near to me, I pray you.' And they came near. And he said: 'I am Joseph your brother, whom ye sold into Egypt.

I am still your brother and he brought Benyamin close to him to show them the similar facial features that until now they had not noticed.

5 And now be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither; for God did send me before you to preserve life.

You thought that you sold me but actually you were fulfilling G-D’s plan.

6 For these two years hath the famine been in the land; and there are yet five years, in which there shall be neither plowing nor harvest.

There will be five more years of famine so come to me where the food is.

7 And God sent me before you to give you a remnant on the earth, and to save you alive for a great deliverance.

G-D sent me ahead of you to pave the way to save you.

8 So now it was not you that sent me hither, but God; and He hath made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and ruler over all the land of Egypt. 9 Hasten ye, and go up to my father, and say unto him: Thus, says thy son Joseph: God hath made me lord of all Egypt; come down unto me, tarry not. 10 And thou shalt dwell in the land of Goshen, and thou shalt be near unto me, thou, and thy children, and thy children's children, and thy flocks, and thy herds, and all that thou hast; 11 and there will I sustain thee; for there are yet five years of famine; lest thou come to poverty, thou, and thy household, and all that thou hast. 12 And, behold, your eyes see, and the eyes of my brother Benjamin, that it is my mouth that speaks unto you.

See how much Benyamin and I look alike hurry and bring down the family here. (This will help fulfill the prophecy to Avraham in the dream between the pieces.)

13 And ye shall tell my father of all my glory in Egypt, and of all that ye have seen; and ye shall hasten and bring down my father hither.'

So post haste to bring down my father so the famine will not hurt him, you and yours.

14 And he fell upon his brother Benjamin's neck, and wept; and Benjamin wept upon his neck.

Rashi quoting the Gemara saying he cried at the neck as that was the approximate height in Benyamin’s territory where the Mikdash was at the height of the neck. He cried for both Mikdashim. But the Pshat is that it was tears of joy after 22years.

15 And he kissed all his brethren, and wept upon them; and after that his brethren talked with him. 16 And the report thereof was heard in Pharaoh's house, saying: 'Joseph's brethren are come'; and it pleased Pharaoh well, and his servants.

Maybe there will be more Bnei Yisrael brains and administrators to help the land of Mitzrayim. Like the disproportional amount of Nobel Prize Winners.

17 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph: 'Say unto thy brethren: This do ye: lade your beasts, and go, get you unto the land of Canaan; 18 and take your father and your households, and come unto me; and I will give you the good of the land of Egypt, and ye shall eat the fat of the land.

Come here go to Goshen where the best land and grazing land is and we have food a-plenty.

19 Now thou art commanded, this do ye: take you wagons out of the land of Egypt for your little ones, and for your wives, and bring your father, and come. 20 Also regard not your stuff; for the good things of all the land of Egypt are yours.'

Although they were not his servants and were free brothers they willing accepted his command to stay alive.

21 And the sons of Israel did so; and Joseph gave them wagons, according to the commandment of Pharaoh, and gave them provision for the way.

When Yacov will see that I am sending Agalos (wagons) I will remind him that we learned Egel Arufa (when one finds a dead person on the path the elders of the city closest to the victim bring an Egel=calf and break its neck saying we have not sinned that this man died). We were learning thus Halacha when you sent me to look for my brothers. Since sin makes one forget Torah I have not sinned.

22 To all of them he gave each man changes of raiment; but to Benjamin he gave three hundred shekels of silver, and five changes of raiment.

And they were not jealous but realized the money and clothing came from HASHEM.

23 And to his father he sent in like manner ten asses laden with the good things of Egypt, and ten she-asses laden with corn and bread and victual for his father by the way. 24 So he sent his brethren away, and they departed; and he said unto them: 'See that ye fall not out by the way.' 25 And they went up out of Egypt, and came into the land of Canaan unto Jacob their father. 26 And they told him, saying: 'Joseph is yet alive, and he is ruler over all the land of Egypt.' And his heart fainted, for he believed them not.

He was in a state of disbelief after 22 years.

27 And they told him all the words of Joseph, which he had said unto them; and when he saw the wagons which Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of Jacob their father revived.

Because he understood that Yosef reminded him of Halacha of Egel Arufa.

28 And Israel said: 'It is enough; Joseph my son is yet alive; I will go and see him before I die.'

Now I know that all 12 sons are alive, I will have a portion in the world to come.

46:1 And Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices unto the God of his father Isaac. 2 And God spoke unto Israel in the visions of the night, and said: 'Jacob, Jacob.' And he said: 'Here am I.'

For 22 years Yacov was depressed and could not get prophecy as he was depressed. For it is written. Tehillim 100:1 A song for a thanksgiving offering. Shout to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with joy (Simcha), come before Him with praise. Meaning the Service or Work before G-D is through joy and happiness.

3 And He said: 'I am God, the God of thy father; fear not to go down into Egypt; for I will there make of thee a great nation. 4 I will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will also surely bring thee up again; and Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes.'

Yacov knew of the prophecy to Avraham but slavery will not occur to you or your sons in their lifetime.

5 And Jacob rose up from Beersheba; and the sons of Israel carried Jacob their father, and their little ones, and their wives, in the wagons which Pharaoh had sent to carry him. 6 And they took their cattle, and their goods, which they had gotten in the land of Canaan, and came into Egypt, Jacob, and all his seed with him; 7 his sons, and his sons' sons with him, his daughters, and his sons' daughters, and all his seed brought he with him into Egypt.

Everybody was going and an accounting is given.

8 And these are the names of the children of Israel, who came into Egypt, Jacob and his sons: Reuben, Jacob's first-born. 9 And the sons of Reuben: Hanoch, and Pallu, and Hezron, and Carmi. … 15 These are the sons of Leah, whom she bore unto Jacob in Paddan-aram, with his daughter Dinah; all the souls of his sons and his daughters were thirty and three. … and Serah their sister; … 18 These are the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to Leah his daughter, and these she bore unto Jacob, even sixteen souls. 19 The sons of Rachel Jacob's wife: Joseph and Benjamin. … 22 These are the sons of Rachel, who were born to Jacob; all the souls were fourteen. … 25 These are the sons of Bilhah, whom Laban gave unto Rachel his daughter, and these she bore unto Jacob; all the souls were seven. 26 All the souls belonging to Jacob that came into Egypt, that came out of his loins, besides Jacob's sons' wives, all the souls were threescore and six. 27 And the sons of Joseph, who were born to him in Egypt, were two souls; all the souls of the house of Jacob, that came into Egypt, were threescore and ten. 28 And he sent Judah before him unto Joseph, to show the way before him unto Goshen; and they came into the land of Goshen. 29 And Joseph made ready his chariot, and went up to meet Israel his father, to Goshen; and he presented himself unto him, and fell on his neck, and wept on his neck a good while.

The Medrash states that Yacov did not cry but was saying the Shema with extra Kavana at the time. Rabbi Yosef Ben Porat HaCohain Shlita explains why at this moment pray Shema? Yacov was thanking G-D for the privilege of seeing Yosef Again. Tzadikim recognize the good that HASHEM does. Another explanation for a different Medrash I read in Parsha Vayeshev is that Yacov knew that if one of his sons would die he would not go straight to Olam HaBa like his forefathers Avraham and Yitzchak. He had resigned himself up to 12 months in Gehenna. Now he knew that he would go straight to Olam HaBa he was so happy with is place in the Olam HaEmmes. The Maharal brought this Medrash down too. In a different way, the Chazon Ish was disturbed by a terror attack and stated as much as all the Jews of Israel are disturbed by the deaths of these individuals, I am disturbed by the millions of school kids being brainwashed into a secular education and losing their Olam HaBa for Olam HaZeh.

30 And Israel said unto Joseph: 'Now let me die, since I have seen thy face, that thou art yet alive.'

31 And Joseph said unto his brethren, and unto his father's house: 'I will go up, and tell Pharaoh, and will say unto him: My brethren, and my father's house, who were in the land of Canaan, are come unto me;

32 and the men are shepherds, for they have been keepers of cattle; and they have brought their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have. 33 And it shall come to pass, when Pharaoh shall call you, and shall say: What is your occupation? 34 that ye shall say: Thy servants have been keepers of cattle from our youth even until now, both we, and our fathers; that ye may dwell in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is an abomination unto the Egyptians.'

The Egyptians Worshipped Sheep. I one sees the movie “Murder on the Nile” one can see in the movie rows of sheep.

47:1 Then Joseph went in and told Pharaoh, and said: 'My father and my brethren, and their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have, are come out of the land of Canaan; and, behold, they are in the land of Goshen.' 2 And from among his brethren he took five men, and presented them unto Pharaoh. 3 And Pharaoh said unto his brethren: 'What is your occupation?' And they said unto Pharaoh: 'Thy servants are shepherds, both we, and our fathers.'

Haven’t I told you to say you were cattlemen (which is not a lie). Instead you Bumpkins said Shepherds which is an abomination.

4 And they said unto Pharaoh: 'To sojourn in the land are we come; for there is no pasture for thy servants' flocks; for the famine is sore in the land of Canaan. Now therefore, we pray thee, let thy servants dwell in the land of Goshen.' 5 And Pharaoh spoke unto Joseph, saying: 'Thy father and thy brethren are come unto thee; 6 the land of Egypt is before thee; in the best of the land make thy father and thy brethren to dwell; in the land of Goshen let them dwell. And if thou know any able men among them, then make them rulers over my cattle.'

If any of you are cowpokes, I can use you to work for me. The work for me would eventually end up in construction and then slavery.

7 And Joseph brought in Jacob his father, and set him before Pharaoh. And Jacob blessed Pharaoh. 8 And Pharaoh said unto Jacob: 'How many are the days of the years of thy life?' 9 And Jacob said unto Pharaoh: 'The days of the years of my sojournings are a hundred and thirty years; few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and they have not attained unto the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their sojournings.'

I know that if was to go before Charles III or Biden, I would not rattle off all my aches and pains.

10 And Jacob blessed Pharaoh, and went out from the presence of Pharaoh. 11 And Joseph placed his father and his brethren, and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded.

A blessing from Tzadik HaDor is something special.

12 And Joseph sustained his father, and his brethren, and all his father's household, with bread, according to the want of their little ones.

From his power and wealth it was nothing for him to feed and clothe 70individuals.

13 And there was no bread in all the land; for the famine was very sore, so that the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan languished by reason of the famine. 14 And Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, for the corn which they bought; and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh's house.

Soon Pharaoh had all the money.

15 And when the money was all spent in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came unto Joseph, and said: 'Give us bread; for why should we die in thy presence? for our money fails.' 16 And Joseph said: 'Give your cattle, and I will give you [bread] for your cattle, if money fail.'

Yosef collected their cattle for Pharaoh.

17 And they brought their cattle unto Joseph. And Joseph gave them bread in exchange for the horses, and for the flocks, and for the herds, and for the asses; and he fed them with bread in exchange for all their cattle for that year. 18 And when that year was ended, they came unto him the second year, and said unto him: 'We will not hide from my lord, how that our money is all spent; and the herds of cattle are my lord's; there is nought left in the sight of my lord, but our bodies, and our lands.

And they sold everything including themselves unto Pharaoh for food.

19 Wherefore should we die before thine eyes, both we and our land? buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be bondmen unto Pharaoh; and give us seed, that we may live, and not die, and that the land be not desolate.' 20 So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; for the Egyptians sold every man his field, because the famine was sore upon them; and the land became Pharaoh's.

So everybody became a servant to Pharaoh.

21 And as for the people, he removed them city by city, from one end of the border of Egypt even to the other end thereof.

The same went for businesses and housing in the cities.

22 Only the land of the priests bought he not, for the priests had a portion from Pharaoh, and did eat their portion which Pharaoh gave them; wherefore they sold not their land.

They had what we call today a religious exemption.

23 Then Joseph said unto the people: 'Behold, I have bought you this day and your land for Pharaoh. Lo, here is seed for you, and ye shall sow the land. 24 And it shall come to pass at the ingatherings, that ye shall give a fifth unto Pharaoh, and four parts shall be your own, for seed of the field, and for your food, and for them of your households, and for food for your little ones.'

Yosef gave them seeds for crops. As this was the only way out of the famine.

25 And they said: 'Thou hast saved our lives. Let us find favor in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh's bondmen.' 26 And Joseph made it a statute concerning the land of Egypt unto this day, that Pharaoh should have the fifth; only the land of the priests alone became not Pharaoh's.

Attic Inspiration by Rabbi Yerachmiel Tilles

http://ascentofsafed.com/cgi-bin/ascent.cgi?Name=1306-13

Poland in the winter of 1943:

The Jews who were not captured by the Nazis went into hiding. Among them was the Shinar family. They found refuge with a neighbor in a 6½ by 8½ft. attic bunker. In that closet-sized bunker, the Shinar family lived for 2½ years! Can you imagine?
In the midst of that darkness, how could this family even think of observing Chanukah, the festival of lights? Even normal light was hard to find. There were only 2 tiny peepholes in the outside wall, which enabled them to distinguish night from day. Yet in those cramped quarters, they somehow managed to observe some kind of a Shabbat and Jewish holidays.

For 17-year-old Yisrael Shinar, the only thing he had in abundance was time. And so, after the Autumn holidays of Rosh Hashana through Simchat Torah, he spent his waking hours trying to figure out some way to improvise some kind of Chanukah. During their first Chanukah in the bunker they had marked the 8 days by drawing a menorah. Every day of Chanukah, they would pencil in one more flame. That was the best they could do.

But in the second year, Yisrael came up with an idea. Their host family had a son who was roughly his age. Yisrael dared to ask him if he could collect some of the wax left over from the candles in his home. The boy agreed, and for several weeks, he brought tiny bits of wax to the bunker when he came to deliver their meager food. Yisrael took these bits of wax and some thin strands of thread to make wicks, and lo, that year the family lit candles together to fulfill the mitzvah of Chanukah.

In January 1945, the family was liberated. The Shinars went to their old home and found a pharmacist living in it. They met soldiers of the Jewish Brigade who helped them get across Poland, across Czechoslovakia, through Germany, and finally to Palestine. But the story of those Chanukah candles never left him.

Fifty years later:

Yisrael Shinar went on to become the owner of the Menorah Candle Factory in Israel-the largest candle manufacturing company in the world. In the last 50 years [as of 2015], Shinar's company has manufactured 3.6 billion candles! Millions of Jews now use Israel Shinar's candles-which come in 8 different colors for the 8 days of Chanukah.

Can you imagine? Someone who started out making candles for Chanukah out of little pieces of wax and thread that he somehow made into wicks in a dark and tiny bunker became the world's largest manufacturer of Chanukah candles? Is this not a Chanukah miracle?
(
Adapted by Yerachmiel Tilles from an article by Rabbi Mark Hillel Kunis on December 2015 in ShaareiShamayim.com, who heard it from Rabbi Jack Reimer.) concludes:
And is it not a miracle that, even in that deepest darkness of that crowded closet where he and his family lived for more than 2 years, Yisrael Shinar believed in bringing more light into the world-not in cursing the darkness? And is it not a miracle that when he got out and made his way to Palestine, Yisrael chose not to wallow in self-pity, and not to brood or fester or seek revenge, but that instead he chose to rebuild his life and bring more light into the world?

May all of us learn from Yisrael Shinar to try to strive to increase the light in this world-especially during Chanukah. And may Al-mighty G-d who gave him the ability to hope and the courage to try, to bestow upon us too some of these qualities, so that we can retell the Chanukah story every year-by the lights we kindle in our own menorahs, by the lights we kindle in the hearts of others, and by the way we live. AMEN!

Hanukah in a Soviet Prison By Rabbi Aharon Loschak

https://www.chabad.org/holidays/chanukah/article_cdo/aid/5734784/jewish/Chanukah-Lights-in-Soviet-Prison

“There I was, sitting in a Soviet prison without even the remotest possibility of lighting the Chanukah candles,” related Reb Berke Chein, a venerable Chassid who spent years in prison after a failed attempt to duck under the Iron Curtain.

One of the many unsung heroes of the Chabad effort to stand up to the Soviet monster, Reb Berke was legendary for his sincere devotion to fulfilling every mitzvah in the best possible manner.

And this is what he told about his personal Hanukah miracle deep in the Soviet penal system:

“We prisoners were regularly interrogated, and if even the slightest item was found on our person when we were pulled into the interrogation room, we could be charged with treason and sentenced to death.

“As Chanukah approached, I was increasingly worried about how I would procure matches, wicks, and oil to fulfill the Mitzva of lighting the menorah. How would I obtain these precious commodities in a sealed-off prison cell? And even if I did get them, how would I hide them from the guards?

“To my good fortune, I was on friendly terms with the other inmates in my cell. A few days before Hanukah, one of them approached me and asked why I was so down. I explained my predicament, and after sharing my problem with the other guys, one of the long-time inmates asked, ‘Tell me, exactly what you need?’

“ ‘Oil, a little cotton for wicks, something to hold the oil, and most importantly, matches.’

“ ‘No problem,’ answered this burly, hardened, non-Jewish Russian inmate. As Hanukah came, he presented me with his findings: An onion chopped in half would serve as the Menorah. A slab of butter saved from my daily rations would replace the oil. A few threads from his threadbare prison uniform would form the wicks.

“I was impressed with his resourcefulness, and of course, deeply grateful. But what about the matches? That was the hardest part, and being caught with matches would certainly spell the end for the guilty party.

“He took another few threads from someone’s uniform and started rubbing them very quickly on the stone floor with the sole of a shoe. Again, and again, he mercilessly rubbed those tiny strands between the hard surface and the leather. And sure enough, they started to glow and smoke. Before long, my wicks were lit, and there was my menorah burning against the Soviet darkness.

“That,” concluded Reb Berke, “was my personal Chanukah miracle.”

Two War Heroes that faced discrimination.

By Sara Shemin Cass and Dan Burstein

https://aish.com/two-war-heroes-who-faced-discrimination/

and the woman who fought for recognition.

On a hot August day in 1918, Sergeant William Shemin was in the trenches in Bazoches, France. He was part of the U.S. 47th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division that was fighting with the Allies during World War I. The ground smelled sour and terrible, and in his trench he saw gigantic rats, outbreaks of lice, and many dead bodies. Some of the soldiers developed a painful condition that damages the feet called “trench foot” which can happen from standing in cold water or mud for an extended period of time.

Stepping out of the trench into no-man’s land was even worse. Troops had to survive a hail of bullets flying everywhere, the barbs of twisted wire on the ground, and the poison of deadly mustard gas.

The American soldiers in the trenches needed to locate a German machine gun nest. Two soldiers volunteered, but they were killed. Other soldiers went out under fire and were wounded on the battlefield. William (Bill) Shemin had to make an impossible choice. Was he brave enough to risk near-certain death if he tried to rescue a fellow soldier?

Without wasting a moment, Bill jumped from the safety of the trench and dashed towards the injured soldier. When he got close, he realized this was his best friend from Newark, NJ, Jim Pritchard, who was 6 feet tall and weighed 200 pounds. On this sunny day in the open field with no cover, Bill was able to dodge the bullets and barbed wire. An athlete all his young life, Bill was able to hoist his friend over his shoulder and carry him back to safety, running across the football field and half-length of no-man’s land, dodging German enemy fire the entire way.

And both of these soldiers went unrecognized with a Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military award, in their lifetimes, even though their heroic acts during WW I certainly deserved one. Why? Both men were discriminated against – William Shemin, because he was a Jewish American, and Henry Johnson, because he was African American.

Can a wrong be made right?

Meet the third hero of this story – Elsie Shemin-Roth, William’s daughter. The battlefield isn’t the only way to demonstrate tremendous acts of courage and determination. Elsie waged her own battle to have the U.S. government review the records of WWI soldiers who had been overlooked for the MOH due to discrimination. After 15 years of so much effort and hearing “Sorry, no” to many requests, Elsie was finally triumphant. President Obama approved the Medal of Honor to both William Shemin and Henry Johnson in 2015.

A White House ceremony was convened on June 2, 2015, to present the MOH posthumously to both William Shemin and Henry Johnson. On that occasion, President Barack Obama said:

It has taken a long time for Henry Johnson and William Shemin to receive the recognition they deserve.  And there are surely others whose heroism is still unacknowledged and uncelebrated.  We have work to do, as a nation, to make sure that all of our heroes’ stories are told.   And we’ll keep at it, no matter how long it takes.  America is the country we are today because of people like Henry and William -- Americans who signed up to serve, and rose to meet their responsibilities -- and then went beyond.  The least we can do is to say:  We know who you are.  We know what you did for us.  We are forever grateful.

Since that bright day in 2015, we have seen both progress and setbacks in America. There is a rising wave of hate crimes and attacks against Jews, African Americans, Asians, Latinos, Native Americans and other minority groups. We hope this story inspires people to continue to fight for justice and equality for all people.

Ed-Op: Time to stop spreading Jew hatred. Antisemitism and anti-Zionism, planned distractions from the attacks on our shared values, are meant to divide us.

Jews & Christians must come together to fight against our common enemy: Progressive Woke ideology that's attacking Western Culture and the Judeo/Christian ethic that underpins our freedom.

John Adams, a member of the Declaration of Independence committee and second president of the United States (1797–1801), understood the deep connection between ethical monotheism and freedom. America was looked upon as the New Zion.

I will insist that the Hebrews have done more to civilize men than any other nation. If I were an atheist, and believed in blind eternal fate, I should still believe that fate had ordained the Jews to be the most essential instrument for civilizing the nations. If I were an atheist of the other sect, who believe or pretend to believe that all is ordered by chance, I should believe that chance had ordered the Jews to preserve and propagate to all mankind the doctrine of a supreme, intelligent, wise, almighty, sovereign of the universe, which I believe to be a great essential principle of all morality, and consequently of all civilization.
