Parsha Vaeschanan, stories, news

Please add Dovid ben Shima to the prayer list. Prayers for Rabbi Ephraim ben Rivka.
Eliyahu Daniel Ben Tzion ben Sara.

Parsha Vaeschanan

This week we continue with Moshe’s Mussar aka Ethical Rebuke to the Bnei Yisrael. We are interrupted by Moshe’s personal prayer to enter Eretz Yisrael. However, he is denied. He knows that he will die after the war with Moav but he proceeds with zeal to finish the war and his task.

Moshe then continues with the rebuke and separates three cities on the other side of the Yarden for refuge. The Shema and Decalogue are stated.

3:23 And I besought the LORD at that time, saying: 24 'O Lord GOD, Thou hast begun to show Thy servant Thy greatness, and Thy strong hand; for what god is there in heaven or on earth, that can do according to Thy works, and according to Thy mighty acts? 25 Let me go over, I pray Thee, and see the good land that is beyond the Jordan, that goodly hill-country, and Lebanon.' 26 But the LORD was wroth with me for your sakes, and hearkened not unto me; and the LORD said unto me: 'Let it suffice thee; speak no more unto Me of this matter.

Moshe prayed the pray close to 500 times – Medrash but Moshe was not a teen that is obsessive and he quits as HASHEM has told him.

27 Get thee up into the top of Pisgah, and lift up thine eyes westward, and northward, and southward, and eastward, and behold with thine eyes; for thou shalt not go over this Jordan.

He goes up the mountain to see the promised land.

28 But charge Joshua, and encourage him, and strengthen him; for he shall go over before this people, and he shall cause them to inherit the land which thou shalt see.'

Yoshua shall take over from you and he will conquer the land and guide the people.

29 So we abode in the valley over against Beth-peor.

So we abode here.

4:1 And now, O Israel, hearken unto the statutes and unto the ordinances, which I teach you, to do them; that ye may live, and go in and possess the land which the LORD, the God of your fathers, gives you.

What is the whole purpose of the Mitzvos in the laws, statutes and ordinances? To observe an do them and live by them in the land and you will have prosperity, long lives and your wealth and family will grow.

2 Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.

Just as one cannot remove a commandment such as Shabbos, Murder, Adultery, Stealing, etc. so one cannot add a Mitzvah. One is allowed to make a Fence aka Geder in Hebrew such as not touching a lumber jack’s large saw on Shabbos for it serves no purpose but to chop trees but a small hammer that can crack walnuts can be used on Shabbos.

3 Your eyes have seen what the LORD did in Baal-peor; for all the men that followed the Baal of Peor, the LORD thy God hath destroyed them from the midst of thee. 4 But ye that did cleave unto the LORD your God are alive every one of you this day.

Because you cleaved unto the L-RD you are alive today.

5 Behold, I have taught you statutes and ordinances, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the midst of the land whither ye go in to possess it. 6 Observe therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, that, when they hear all these statutes, shall say: 'Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.'

We are supposed to be wise with the Mitzvos. However, not following them will turn us into ‘wise guys’ before G-D and our father in heaven will discipline like any father dealing with a wise guy kid.

7 For what great nation is there, that hath God so nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is whensoever we call upon Him?

G-D listens to our prayers when we call. But you might also expect a ‘no’ answer or not to receive presently what you thought your needs were.

8 And what great nation is there, that hath statutes and ordinances so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day? 9 Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes saw, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life; but make them known unto thy children and thy children's children;

When we make a Siyum of Talmud, we pray that the Talmud should not depart from our mouths, our children’s mouths or the mouths of our grandchildren forever.

10 the day that thou stood before the LORD thy God in Horev, when the LORD said unto me: 'Assemble Me the people, and I will make them hear My words that they may learn to fear Me all the days that they live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children.' 11 And ye came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire unto the heart of heaven, with darkness, cloud, and thick darkness. 12 And the LORD spoke unto you out of the midst of the fire; ye heard the voice of words, but ye saw no form; only a voice.

You heard the first two commandments of the Decalogue until fear over-took you.

… 25 When thou shalt beget children, and children's children, and ye shall have been long in the land, and shall deal corruptly, and make a graven image, even the form of anything, and shall do that which is evil in the sight of the LORD thy God, to provoke Him; 26 I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that ye shall soon utterly perish from off the land whereunto ye go over the Jordan to possess it; ye shall not prolong your days upon it, but shall utterly be destroyed.

The land and the heavens will bear witness against you for violating the commandments and you will be kicked off the land.

… 39 know this day, and lay it to thy heart, that the LORD, He is God in heaven above and upon the earth beneath; there is none else. 40 And thou shalt keep His statutes, and His commandments, which I command thee this day, that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee, and that thou may prolong thy days upon the land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee, forever.

If you want to stay in the land of Eretz Yisrael then get it into your heart and mind that you most observe, guard, keep and cherish the commandments.

41 Then Moses separated three cities beyond the Jordan toward the sunrising; 42 that the manslayer might flee thither, that slays his neighbor unawares, and hated him not in time past; and that fleeing unto one of these cities he might live: 43 Bezer in the wilderness, in the table-land, for the Reubenites; and Ramoth in Gilead, for the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan, for the Manassites.
… 5:4 The LORD spoke with you face to face in the mount out of the midst of the fire-- 5 I stood between the LORD and you at that time, to declare unto you the word of the LORD; for ye were afraid because of the fire, and went not up into the mount--saying:  6 I am the LORD thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before Me. … 11 Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the LORD thy God commanded thee.

Observe (Shomer) or guard the Shabbos from any violation on your part or that of your family.

12 Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work;

Not ordinary work (Avoda) but Melachos Avoda one of the 39 categories of work that occurred in the Mishkan. Any other Avoda is not included. Thus moving a number of barrels of wine from one place to Sheva Berachos for a newlywed couple might be physical work but within a hotel building or inn, just part of meal and permissible.

13 but the seventh day is a Sabbath unto the LORD thy God, in it thou shalt not do any manner of work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy man-servant, nor thy maid-servant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy man-servant and thy maid-servant may rest as well as thou.

Anybody in your household shall not be doing work. Even your non-Jewish Servant should not do work. However, one can hint that the fuse blew or the Shabbos clock shut off your air conditioner and the servant could understand what they had to do for Shabbos.

14 And thou shalt remember that thou was a servant in the land of Egypt, and the LORD thy God brought thee out thence by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm; therefore the LORD thy God commanded thee to keep the Sabbath day.

Doing a Melacha on Shabbos such as driving to the beach makes one a slave to his passions. One who is a Gebor or hero is one who conquers his personalized desires and lets HASHEM’s desires become his. [This works also in marriage. You want something and your wife wants a second watch or a new dress. Instead of demanding what you selfishly want it could be a fishing-rod, bowling ball, nonsense or what-not, the reward of love in return and Shalom Beis is well worth it.]

15 Honor thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God commanded thee; that thy days may be long, and that it may go well with thee, upon the land which the LORD thy God gives thee.

Rabbis often say “My father {or mother} of blessed memory” it is a good thing for their soul and the speaker’s merit.

16 Thou shalt not murder.

Murder is the point of no return to life and adultery murders a marriage.

Neither shalt thou commit adultery. Neither shalt thou steal.

This is to steal a human being and force them into slavery. The Arabs would go into Africa and steal blacks especially infidels or dhimmi Jews and sell them to slave traders.

Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbor.

The easiest thing to do is to lie and make a gain. It is much harder to tell the truth for honor and fortune in the next world while enjoying in the here and now is very appealing.

17 Neither shalt thou covet thy neighbor's wife;

If a man has a wonderful wife this is not a problem but if he has a woman is not and the neighbor has the nicest, most intelligent, wealthy and fabulous looking wife, one can see a problem arising.

neither shalt thou desire thy neighbor's house, his field, or his man-servant, or his maid-servant, his ox, or his ass, or anything that is thy neighbor's.

The Torah is advising us to be happy with our portion and for us to be happy for our neighbor. Example, I have a Condo in FL that is small and the tax burden is small. A certain man I know has an estate in Mar Largo that requires constant maintenance, servants who garden, clean, shine the yacht, and have the house fully ready for the man to come anytime. Taxes on the estate are very high. It is true that the place at Mar Largo is bigger and better than mine but if I am happy with my lot perhaps I am better off than my Mar Largo Neighbor with the estate.

18 These words the LORD spoke unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice, and it went on no more. And He wrote them upon two tables of stone, and gave them unto me.

6:1 Now this is the commandment, the statutes, and the ordinances, which the LORD your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go over to possess it-- 2 that thou might fear the LORD thy God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.

Observe and live long.

3 Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the LORD, the God of thy fathers, hath promised unto thee--a land flowing with milk and honey.

You are about to enter a land that will enrich you both physically and spiritually.

4 Hear, O Israel: the LORD our God, the LORD is one.

Listen Yisrael. This is bearing witness. The Ayin of Shema and the Dalet of Ehud is the Hebrew word Ayd or witness. That the L-RD our G-D is one over the Dalet forms of matter. Gas, solid, liquid and plasma. The Dalet forms of ‘life’ inanimate, plant, animal and talking. The Dalet compass directions north, east, south, west. The Dalet forms in our solar system. Sun, Moon, Planets and Earth. The Dalet astronomical forms solar system, constellations, galaxy, universe. Dalet heavenly forms Chayos, Orphanim, Seraphim and Shechina.

5 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

With all your heart or every physical aspect of your body. With all your components of the soul Nefesh, Ruach, Neshama, Chaya and Yechida and might is all your physical possessions.

6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be upon thy heart;

The Torah and HASHEM shall be before you every minute. Even if one is seduced into some sort of sin, he should remember and try to desist.

7 and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sit in thy house, and when thou walk by the way, and when thou lie down, and when thou rise up.

Ones every waking moment should be for HASHEM in front of his children, with his wife and waking saying ‘Modeh Ani’ or lying down to go to sleep saying ‘Hamapil’ the L-RD should be before him and everything should be for his Creator.

8 And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thy hand, and they shall be for frontlets between thine eyes.

The Mitzvah of Tephillin and the four Parshiyos are only for men and on weekdays.

9 And thou shalt write them upon the door-posts of thy house, and upon thy gates.

The Mezuzah shall be on your way in and our of your house to remember HASHEM.

10 And it shall be, when the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the land which He swore unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee--great and goodly cities, which thou didst not build, 11 and houses full of all good things, which thou didst not fill, and cisterns hewn out, which thou didst not hew, vineyards and olive-trees, which thou didst not plant, and thou shalt eat and be satisfied … for our good always, that He might preserve us alive, as it is at this day. 25 And it shall be righteousness unto us, if we observe to do all this commandment before the LORD our God, as He hath commanded us.'

All the presents that we get when we enter the land shall be ours to enable us to fulfill the commandments easier and better.

7:1 When the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and shall cast out many nations before thee, the Hittite, and the Girgashite, and the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite, seven nations greater and mightier than thou; 2 and when the LORD thy God shall deliver them up before thee, and thou shalt smite them; then thou shalt utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor show mercy unto them; 3 neither shalt thou make marriages with them: thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son.

You shall remove them completely for you must remember what happened to the tribe of Shimon in the days of Zimri.

4 For he will turn away thy son from following Me, that they may serve other gods; so will the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and He will destroy thee quickly.

For if you go aside and chose them, you will die like the Bnei Shimon did when they fell for Baal Peor and the women of Midian.

5 But thus shall ye deal with them: ye shall break down their altars, and dash in pieces their pillars, and hew down their Asherim, and burn their graven images with fire. 6 For thou art a holy people unto the LORD thy God: the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be His own treasure, out of all peoples that are upon the face of the earth. 7 The LORD did not set His love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people--for ye were the fewest of all peoples. 8 but because the LORD loved you, and because He would keep the oath which He swore unto your fathers, hath the LORD brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

You might not be deserving of any of this land, but the merits of your forefathers, you have gained access to the land.

9 Know therefore that the LORD thy God, He is God; the faithful God, who keeps covenant and mercy with them that love Him and keep His commandments to a thousand generations; 10 and repays them that hate Him to their face, to destroy them; He will not be slack to him that hates Him, He will repay him to his face.

You are a creation so if you do not keep your love for your creator but hate him, you will be repaid for in kind.

11 Thou shalt therefore keep the commandment, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which I command thee this day, to do them.

Observe the commandments and all will be well with you.

Napoleon, Washington and the Jews
(Or how simple Jewish Observance can inspire great men)

Napoleon was not only the leader of France but he got to know his subjects. One day, Napoleon saw the Jews sitting on the floor crying and shouting “Oy”! He asked his assistants to find out what tragedy had happened and if he could remedy it. Napoleon was told that the Jews were mourning the destruction of their Temple that had occurred some 1700 plus years previously. Napoleon was amazed and said that such a people will one day see their Temple rebuilt as they were determined in their cause.

This might have prompted Napoleon to try to establish a Sanhedrin for the Jews but the Rabbis opposed this.

Napoleon was not the only great leader influenced or inspired by the Jews. On the night of Dec. 24, 1776 George Washington was pensive. He was leading a rag-tag army against the great British Empire that was using Hessian Soldiers. As he went through the camp looking for a sign of encouragement from G-D, he encountered a Jewish Soldier lighting a Hanucha Lamp. The general asked him what is the meaning of this? The soldier told him that it was Hanucha and he was commemorating the freedom that the Maccabees achieved from Antiochus in order to worship according to the Torah. Washington asked the soldier his name. This was the sign of hope that he needed as if a people scattered from their land could remember their freedom from 2000 years ago, his troops could also remember their freedom as a free nation. With this sign, Washington dared cross the Delaware River in the bitter cold of the night of Dec. 25-26, 1776. He attacked the Hessian Garrison at Trenton, NJ. This was the turning point of the war. After the victory at Trenton, more volunteers came to join the Continental Army.

George Washington went on to victory and was sworn in as the first president of the United States of America. A slight time after being sworn in the place that would become the New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street, George Washington paid a visit to a former private in his army. He brought him a Silver Hanucha Menorah.

Samuel Clemens aka Mark Twain and the Holyland. Napoleon had in his conquests and his idea of the Sanhedrin came to Acco in Eretz Yisrael. Although he did not conquer the land and establish the Sanhedrin he came to Artzaynu. Clemens did so too and hired a camel and an Arab Guide to take him to Yerushalayim. He rode for miles and miles and did not encounter anybody. Once in a while there would be a tree or a well somewhere.
The land was developed as the other side of the ‘green line’ is today. In fact, since the students of the Gaon from Vilna came and then the Zionists, Arabs came from Iraq, Arabia, Egypt and other places to find employment as agricultural workers for the Jews and in commerce. Where there were Jewish Settlements, Rehovot, Petach Tikva, Metulla and northwards, Haifa, Tel Aviv, Yavne, Yahud, Rishon Le Tzion, Nes Tziona, the land began turning from barren to green. The people had returned to their land and the land had blossomed with its people. If Mark Twain could have been in some time gap like ‘An American Yankee in King Arthur’s Court’ he would have stood aghast at the changes in a century plus to the land.

Lou Alcindor the great basket player became Kareem Abdul Jabber

From Haim O.: Kareem Abdul Jabber almost alone among major athletes, recently spoke out against the wave of antisemitism in sports/entertainment.
It's not completely surprising given
[1] He’s a very smart man and 180 degrees removed from the historic illiterates who drive much of the current narrative, and
[2] His father was one of the American heroes who liberated Buchenwald concentration camp during WWII.

Legendary Laker Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, recently spoke out loudly and forcefully, against the pervasive anti-Semitism in Hollywood and professional sports. His condemnation though refreshing is not surprising.

You might say it runs in the family. On April 11, 1945, the American third army smashed through the gates of the infamous concentration camp known as Buchenwald. The horrors of what they found there shocked soldier and general alike.

Gen. Eisenhower, knowing that one day there would be those who would attempt to deny those horrors ever took place, made the local German population participate in the burial of the thousands of murdered men, women, and children, whose bodies lay exposed throughout the camp.

One of those American liberators was Ferdinand L. Alcindor. As a black man who knew personally the experience of discrimination and hate, he was profoundly moved. Seeing a little Jewish boy standing between the survivors, he hoisted him up, and held him high above the heads of the Germans standing there.

"Look at this sweet kid" he hollered, "he isn't even eight yet. This was your enemy, he threatened the Third Reich. He is the one against whom you waged war, and murdered millions like him.” Ferdinand never forgot what he witnessed.

On his deathbed he asked his son to travel to Israel and track down that little boy he had hoisted above his strong shoulders all those years ago.

A promise his son would keep in 2011. Ferdinand's son was born Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor Jr., though you know him as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. That little Jewish boy who survived Buchenwald would grow up to become the Chief Rabbi of Israel, Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau Shlita.

Attention Vegans: Cabbage, Cauliflower, Lettuce, Spinach and other leafy vegetables have to checked for worms by putting them into salt water or lemon then inspected. Arab unemployment no money for sacrifices. https://www.ynetnews.com/article/rJGmPPeZD

Bibi is losing the younger generation. Israel’s longest serving Prime Minister claimed success against Covid 19 after a long lockdown. The problem was that 21.5% unemployment with benefits slow to arrive show that only 29.5% of the population trusts him.

When infections fell, he went on television on May 26 to boast of his success. "Have a beer. Enjoy yourselves," he said. Many Israelis did just that.

But infections later surged, and opinions polls showed confidence in Netanyahu was falling. He now faces nationwide protests over the state of the economy, hit by the coronavirus.

Waving banners outside the prime minister's official Jerusalem residence, the demonstrators are led by young people who scarcely remember any other leader -- Netanyahu has been prime minister since 2009 -- but want him to resign.
