Milestone: Rabbi Simcha HaCohain Kuk, 92, Rav of Rehovot. My teacher, mentor, encourager and guide. Loved both my most religious and non-religious in Rehovot. Some of my comments and ideas came from his Torah Teachings. Active in Jewish Life and preserving Shabbos Kodesh. He would take a subject from Aleph until Tav in his lectures. He would bring down the simple Pshat. Tell the opinions of the Rabbis until he explained the Halacha so a simple man to a Ruv could grasp the subject and without boring the learned. He held Shmita like the Chozen Ish for himself, but when I was in the army, he said you can depend on the Hetair of the Sale of the land for you need your strength defending the borders of Eretz Yisrael.  https://www.jpost.com/breaking-news/article-707567

Parsha Bamidbar Part 1

There are two very short time-wise Seforim (books) of the five Chumashim. They are Vayikra that appears to cover a span of 45 days (Rosh Chodesh Nissan 2449 to 14/15 Iyar 2449. And Devarim that starts either around 27 Teves 2488 or Rosh Chodesh Shevas 2488 to 7 Adar 2488.

At this point we are returning to the beginning of Vayikra time wise and the Tabernacle set up and the tribes encamping around it. The census is being taken and the 600,000 plus are arranged close enough to 150,000 soldiers in each direction with strongest fighting force Degel (flag of) Yehuda going first.

Most of the time the camp will be either moving east or north. There will be back tracking west and south but the weaker force is covering clearer areas military wise. Only towards the end of the Chumash are we promised that Reuven, Gad and half of Menashe will lead the charge. Please note the cutting of ‘repeating’ words cut out here and in Parsha Naso is to save the readers who print out the Drasha paper and ink and has nothing to do with the importance of the tribes.

1:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they were come out of the land of Egypt, saying:

This is Rosh Chodesh Iyar 2449.

2 'Take ye the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, every male, by their polls; 3 from twenty years old and upward, all that are able to go forth to war in Israel: ye shall number them by their hosts, even thou and Aaron.

The census was to know how many warriors were in the army as well as how many men left Mitzrayim.

4 And with you there shall be a man of every tribe, every one head of his fathers' house.

The census was by tribe and not the usual city or greater area where they lived.

5 And these are the names of the men that shall stand with you: of Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur. 6 Of Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai. 7 Of Judah, Nahshon the son of Amminadab. 8 Of Issachar, Nethanel the son of Zuar. 9 Of Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helon. 10 Of the children of Joseph: of Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud; of Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur. 11 Of Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni. 12 Of Dan, Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai. 13 Of Asher, Pagiel the son of Ochran. 14 Of Gad, Eliasaph the son of Deuel. 15 Of Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan.'

These men were mentioned specifically by G-D but I believe they were either elected or appointed by the Elders.

16 These were the elect of the congregation, the princes of the tribes of their fathers; they were the heads of the thousands of Israel.

We already saw in Parsha Yisro, the judgement hierarchy going from 10, 50, 100, 1,000, 10,000 to the tribe.

17 And Moses and Aaron took these men that are pointed out by name.

HASHEM called attention to them to Moshe.

18 And they assembled all the congregation together on the first day of the second month, and they declared their pedigrees after their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, by their polls. 19 As the LORD commanded Moses, so did he number them in the wilderness of Sinai. 20 And the children of Reuben, Israel's first-born, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, by their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 21 those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Reuben, were forty and six thousand and five hundred.

We start with Reuven and Shimon because of the biological order of birth of the Tribes. This specific number was counted.

22 Of the children of Simeon, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, repeating words cut. 23 those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Simeon, were fifty and nine thousand and three hundred.

The population has nothing to do with the order of birth of the tribes but how many were born after they entered Egypt and how many deserved to be redeemed.

24 Of the children of Gad, of the tribe of Gad, were forty and five thousand six hundred and fifty.

This makes Degel Reuven in the South and consists of: 151,200 soldiers or slowly close to average soldiers.

26 Of the children of Judah, were threescore and fourteen thousand and six hundred. 28 Of the children of Issachar, … were fifty and four thousand and four hundred. 30 Of the children of Zebulun, … were fifty and seven thousand and four hundred.

Degel Yehuda was the largest army in the east. 186,400 main attack forces.

32 Of the children of Joseph, namely, of the children of Ephraim, … were forty thousand and five hundred. 34 Of the children of Manasseh, … were thirty and two thousand and two hundred. 36 Of the children of Benjamin, … were thirty and five thousand and four hundred.

Degel Yosef in the west was mainly the rear guard. They were only 101,800 men of war.

38 Of the children of Dan, … were threescore and two thousand and seven hundred. 40 Of the children of Asher, … were forty and one thousand and five hundred. 42 Of the children of Naphtali, … were fifty and three thousand and four hundred.

Degel Dan in the north was 158,700 soldiers.

44 These are those that were numbered, which Moses and Aaron numbered, and the princes of Israel, being twelve men; they were each one for his fathers' house. 45 And all those that were numbered of the children of Israel by their fathers' houses, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war in Israel; 46 even all those that were numbered were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty.

This was the total fighting force and a large-scale ancient army. Israeli Army today both men and women in active service is 177,500 and 445,000 reserves or 622,500 today out of 3,000,000+ in the 17-49 age group. If we were to go up to the age of 60 from the age of 20 approximately 2,000,000+ males would be available.

47 But the Levites after the tribe of their fathers were not numbered among them.

A number of reasons exist. One they did not participate in the golden calf (Egel HaZahav). They then became priests or ministers unto the nation. Last but not least, the Leviim were relatively few in number. We will not see it precisely in the census of 30 to 50 old for if we doubled, sort of adding 20 to 60, the numbers would still be small compared to the other tribes. How is this? The tribe of Levi was Priestly in nature. Priests were exempt by Pharaoh from all service. And it is written. “The more they were afflicted, the more they multiplied (Shemos 1:12). So Sheves Levi multiplied the least.

48 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 49 'Howbeit the tribe of Levi thou shalt not number, neither shalt thou take the sum of them among the children of Israel; 50 but appoint thou the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, and over all the furniture thereof, and over all that belongs to it; they shall bear the tabernacle, and all the furniture thereof; and they shall minister unto it, and shall encamp round about the tabernacle.

There were originally three sons of Levi constituting three sides and Moshe & Aaron on the fourth for the kahuna as Moshe served as Cohain before Aaron took over.

51 And when the tabernacle sets forward, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up; and the common man that draws nigh shall be put to death.

While the Cohanim were in charge of the holiest work, the Leviim were in charge of moving the holy items per family. So, when they once stubbled with the Aron HaKodesh in the times of Melech Dovid, and a hapless man tried to prevent it from falling; he died on the spot. For an ordinary Jew trying to do this work would die. If one recalls the story of the 3 Gerim and Hillel Shabbos 33-34. The one who wanted to become Cohain Gadol read this, he drew his on conclusion that if a born Jew would die from touching holy items all the more so a convert. Yet by this time, he remained a convert.

52 And the children of Israel shall pitch their tents, every man with his own camp, and every man with his own standard, according to their hosts. 53 But the Levites shall pitch round about the tabernacle of the testimony, that there be no wrath upon the congregation of the children of Israel; and the Levites shall keep the charge of the tabernacle of the testimony.'

They were in the middle also guarding the Miskan.

54 Thus did the children of Israel; according to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so did they.

They took the census and moved the families into the encampments.

2:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying: 2 'The children of Israel shall pitch by their fathers' houses; every man with his own standard, according to the ensigns; a good way off shall they pitch round about the tent of meeting.

This is a basic forerunner of the division of the land. The family and the elders of the family advised the younger and kept authority within the family. Patriarchs for the men and Matriarchs for the cooking, sewing, weaving and other skills.

3 Now those that pitch on the east side toward the sunrising shall be they of the standard of the camp of Judah, according to their hosts; the prince of the children of Judah being Nahshon the son of Amminadav,

4 and his host, and those that were numbered of them, threescore and fourteen thousand and six hundred; 5 and those that pitch next unto him shall be the tribe of Issachar; the prince of the children of Issachar being Nethanel the son of Zuar, 6 and his host, even those that were numbered thereof, fifty and four thousand and four hundred; 7 and the tribe of Zebulun; the prince of the children of Zebulun being Eliab the son of Helon, 8 and his host, and those that were numbered thereof, fifty and seven thousand and four hundred; 9 all that were numbered of the camp of Judah being a hundred thousand and fourscore thousand and six thousand and four hundred, according to their hosts; they shall set forth first.

I did the math above and the Torah comes to remind us as each and every member of the Israeli Army is a precious treasure before HASHEM.

10 On the south side shall be the standard of the camp of Reuben according to their hosts; the prince of the children of Reuben being Elizur the son of Shedeur, … the prince of the children of Simeon being Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai, … the prince of the children of Gad being Eliasaph the son of Reuel, … 16 all that were numbered of the camp of Reuben being a hundred thousand and fifty and one thousand and four hundred and fifty, according to their hosts; and they shall set forth second.

Co-ordination and marching order of the army is very important. It was then all the more so with a modern army, air force, navy, logistical supplies, rescue. Generals must know where the infantry, armor, artillery, field hospital, missiles, back-up supplies are today. Relatively speaking it was the same then but over a smaller more concentrated area.

17 Then the tent of meeting, with the camp of the Levites, shall set forward in the midst of the camps; as they encamp, so shall they set forward, every man in his place, by their standards.

So the east and the south moved, then the middle followed by closing the flanks of the west and the north.

18 On the west side shall be the standard of the camp of Ephraim according to their hosts; the prince of the children of Ephraim being Elishama the son of Ammihud, … the prince of the children of Manasseh being Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur, … the prince of the children of Benjamin being Abidan the son of Gideoni, … 24 all that were numbered of the camp of Ephraim being a hundred thousand and eight thousand and a hundred, according to their hosts; and they shall set forth third. 25 On the north side shall be the standard of the camp of Dan according to their hosts; the prince of the children of Dan being Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai, … the prince of the children of Asher being Pagiel the son of Ochran, … the prince of the children of Naphtali being Ahira the son of Enan, … 31 all that were numbered of the camp of Dan being a hundred thousand and fifty and seven thousand and six hundred; they shall set forth hindmost by their standards.' 32 These are they that were numbered of the children of Israel by their fathers' houses; all that were numbered of the camps according to their hosts were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty.

This was the grand total of the fighting force as the Leviim and Cohanim were dealing with the holy items.

33 But the Levites were not numbered among the children of Israel; as the LORD commanded Moses. 34 Thus did the children of Israel: according to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so they pitched by their standards, and so they set forward, each one according to its families, and according to its fathers' houses.

The younger generation, particularly in western culture is rebellious in nature and the technologically changes are occurring so quickly that people my age who were on the forefront of computers and the first generation on the internet have been out paced. It is good that the youth are sharp with the lasted technology but the lack of understanding of experience and wisdom has led to the worse generation gap in the history of mankind.

The lack of teaching old morality of the elders and lack of this family bonding have led to disrespect. This in turn has led to a lot of things like mass shootings, lack or respect for country, leadership, etc. All the unbridled sexual perversions have come about that morality is missing. Murder and Thievery are not far behind.

3:1 Now these are the generations of Aaron and Moses in the day that the LORD spoke with Moses in mount Sinai. 2 And these are the names of the sons of Aaron: Nadab the first-born, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. 3 These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the priests that were anointed, whom he consecrated to minister in the priest's office. 4 And Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD, when they offered strange fire before the LORD, in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children; and Eleazar and Ithamar ministered in the priest's office in the presence of Aaron their father.

There Torah is teaching family Hierarchy.

5 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 6 'Bring the tribe of Levi near, and set them before Aaron the priest, that they may minister unto him. 7 And they shall keep his charge, and the charge of the whole congregation before the tent of meeting, to do the service of the tabernacle. 8 And they shall keep all the furniture of the tent of meeting, and the charge of the children of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle. 9 And thou shalt give the Levites unto Aaron and to his sons; they are wholly given unto him from the children of Israel. 10 And thou shalt appoint Aaron and his sons, that they may keep their priesthood; and the common man that draws nigh shall be put to death.'

The warning for the common man was already given. I assume that the first time it was a general statement and now a specific obligation.

I desire to keep the Leviim together so we shall continue Bamidbar 3:11 to 4:20 next week.

Yigal and his wife Nechama, both of whom had grown up on irreligious left-wing kibbutzim, decided to leave Israel and try life in the United States. They settled in Minnesota with their two children, Eitan and Michal.

Several years passed, with them enjoying ordinary, satisfying lives. But then, in the 1970’s, a bizarre problem overshadowed their peaceful existence.

Nechama was seized by hallucinations. They would last for an hour or two at a time, during which her behavior would be unpredictable and wild. Afterwards, it would be as if nothing unusual had happened.

She herself had no idea what was going on with her. When the attacks came, she felt as if a powerful force, an unidentifiable alien being, was possessing her and compelling the wild behaviors, and that she was helpless to resist it.

The couple visited many doctors, but not one could diagnose the cause of the problem.

Their situation deteriorated daily. It was no longer safe for the children to be home alone with their mother when she was under the ‘spell’ of one of her hallucinations. Nechama was constantly tense, never knowing when the next attack would come, and having no idea what to do about them.

It was a difficult time for Yigal as well. In addition to his fulltime job, he now had to be the primary caretaker for Eitan and Michal too.

Despite never having had any significant involvement in Judaism, in her desperation Nechama turned to a local Chabad rabbi, Rabbi Manis Friedman, the well-known teacher and speaker, whom several of her friends had told her about. She begged him to help her.

“I am not a doctor,” he replied to her, “nor do I possess magical powers. However, I can give you some good advice.

“I am a Chassid of the Lubavitch Rebbe,” he explained. “The Rebbe lives in Brooklyn, NY. Write a detailed letter to him. Perhaps he can help you remedy this disastrous illness.”

Nechama and Yigal wrote a tearful, imploring lengthy letter to the Rebbe. They soon received an answer.

The Rebbe advised that they should make their kitchen kosher and all the family should commit themselves to eating kosher only. If they would, they could be assured that the hallucinations would cease.

Husband and wife had diametrically opposite reactions. For Nechama, the Rebbe’s words were like a life preserver on a raging sea. She arranged to study the laws with Rabbi Friedman’s wife, Chana. “On the kibbutz, I never heard about keeping kosher,” she told her new friend and teacher.

Mrs. Friedman keep up a constant stream of encouragement for Nechama and accompanied her to shop at local stores where kosher food was available. Soon Nechama started to put into practice her newfound knowledge, doing so with lively enthusiasm. Within a short time, she did what was necessary with her appliances, pots and dishes in order to have a kosher kitchen, and adjusted her food purchasing habits to buy only products with kashrut certification.

Yigal, however, was neither happy or comfortable with this change of lifestyle. He went along with it at home, but not out of the house. Since his wife was ill and the doctors were unable to help her, he accepted that they had to try every reasonable possibility.  But this kosher thing—who knew what it would lead to? Nechama might even change so much that she will want to become religious! Then what would be?

One day, seeking a bit of respite from the pressures at home, Yigal went out with a group of friends. As they were sitting and talking, one of them related what he had heard about an elderly gentile woman in their Midwest region who supposedly could work miracles; she was even said to be psychic and able to predict the future.

Yigal became excited.  Perhaps this was the solution to his wife’s problems.  While his friends heatedly argued about whether or not these stories could be true, Yigal already decided that he would seek to enlist this unusual woman’s aid. After all, what did he have to lose.

The next day, Yigal drove several hours to see her. He described to her in detail about his wife’s hallucinations and their effect on the family, and waited expectantly.

“Aren’t you Jewish?” the gentile woman asked as she stared him in the eyes.

Surprised by the question, Yigal simply nodded his head.

“I thought so. But then, why are you here?” she continued in a firm tone. “You should be getting in touch with the grand rabbi of the Jews who lives in New York. He is dedicated to his people with boundless love. Also, his powers are much greater than mine.”

Yigal was stunned. “I can’t believe this!” he thought. It felt as if he was dreaming. Why should this gentile woman, who admitted she had powers, be trying to direct him to the Lubavitcher Rebbe? He felt very disoriented.

“Well,” he finally replied, “it so happens that we already wrote a long letter to him. He didn’t address the problem directly. He merely said we should follow the Jewish dietary laws and that would help.”

“If so, I don’t understand why you are still searching for answers.” the woman asked. “Do the diet of your religion, like he said. Why do you come to me?”

Yigal wanted to explain. “You don’t understand. The rules are so many and so complicated—special food, problems with dishes and pots, no restaurants, and besides….”

Yigal suddenly stopped speaking. The woman was staring at him in puzzlement.

He gulped. Their lives were being destroyed by his wife’s mysterious ailment. How could he be so resistant to a few inconveniences?

So Yigal joined Nechama in the commitment to keeping kosher, even outside of their home, and soon after the hallucinations ceased completely. Normality in the home was restored.

Time passed. The horrors of those days were barely remembered. All that remains to remind them of the strange episode which altered their lives is the portrait of the Lubavitcher Rebbe adorning the main wall in their living room.

Many are the messengers of G-d!

The other side of the Miracle of about two weeks ago thanks to R’ Moshe S. “My name is Avraham Maimon, I'm the brother of Yair Maimon, the hero from Tekoa who killed the terrorist who tried to break into his house yesterday.

Here is another side to the story: Yesterday evening, my mother was sitting in her home in Kiriat Arba, when she began to feel an overwhelming distress in her heart. Although she was tired and exhausted from a Shabbat where she hosted all her children, she felt that something big was about to happen.

In a spur-of-the-moment decision, she walked down to the Cave of the Patriarchs, the tombs of our fathers and mothers, and began to weep and pray; although she did not know for what.

In those same very moments, Yair and his wife spontaneously decided to go out for tea on the balcony of their house, and you know what happened next. When I first called my mother to tell her what was going on, she just replied, "I know something happened. Just tell me everyone is okay."

There is a hidden world that we do not see: a connection between mother and son; a connection between the fathers and mothers of our nation to us, their children; a connection between Hebron and Gush Etzion; a connection between prayer and reality.”

The Conquest of Chevron and Gush Etzion in 1967 – by R. Pauli

General Uzi Narkis and the Paratroopers had just conquered Har HaBeis and the Kotel.

Rabbi Shlomo Goren had visited the Temple Mount and blown his Shofar there. The Waqif had given the keys to General Moshe Dayan and literally Har HaBeis was ours. But the man who ate Tumay and Trafe gave them the key. Thus, our problems today.

Rabbi Goren heard over the army internal radio that the Paratroopers were pulling out for the conquest of Chevron and Gush Etzion where the 1929 Massacre occurred. The Arabs were shaking in their boots waiting for revenge killings and total dispersion from the area.

Even more impressive than the promise in Bechukosai, Rav Goren, armed with a pistol and perhaps an Uzi Gun with his driver drove straight for the Machpelah. There the Arab Notables awaited him with a white flag. Chevron was in our hands again for the first time in 38 years.

A short time later, the Paratroopers rolled in securing the area. For the first time since the Arab conquest, Jews could walk in the lower cave unto the real graves of Avraham, Yitzchak, Yacov, the Ramban, etc. Today, as mass prayer exists we only enter the area above and most of the year Yitzchak Hall is off limits to Jews. It contains the famous “well of souls” or the spot where all Neshamos go up before entering the seat of Judgement.

Graves or the family of Dovid, Avner ben Ner, A Lubavitcher Rebbetzin, etc. became available for Jewish Prayer.

This is not related to Judaism of even making one fear or love G-D but for an old timer it made me happy:

I saw this from Charles and it makes me feel good inside. BORN AT THE BEST TIME. I imagine most of on this site feel we were born at the right, or best, time … growing up in the 50’s and 60’s. I was born in 1945, so I was the recipient of the post war boom. Our family was certainly not well off financially, but the environment of the time was wonderful. We were free to be kids, doing things that are frightening to parents these days. Before I was 9 years old, Rock ‘n Roll was coming in and car styling was wild with chrome and colors that put today’s cars to shame. I saw the 60’s come in like a hold-over of the 50’s, and nine years later it was a different world. But, during those years, the music was the best ever. I went to school when there was respect and the curriculum was varied to create a well-rounded person. I was married at 25 and raised three kids in a world that was not scary and bitter like now. (In my case change to 1947 and married at 22) [This includes today’s Yeshiva world where chairs were thrown in the Ponevezh Yeshiva.]

Yes, I think growing up in the 50’s and 60’s was a blessing.

Many years ago, my parents had a bungalow in up-State NY. There was an Autistic young man older that I about 54years ago who made a very logical statement. “If my dead dog died then my dead dog is dead.” A giggling high ranked politician told reports that she just rode and an electronic bus and that they rode on an electronic bus mentioning the words at least 4, 5 or more times. The week before about the same thing on a subject in Europe. Now that scares me.
