Parsha
Kedoshim
Last
week, the Bnei Yisrael cleaned up their personal relationships from the
wickedness of Egyptian Society. Now the people were ready to become a holy
people and this is where we start this week's Parsha. There will be some
repeating of forbidden relationships as they were harder to remove from the
people.
19:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 Speak
unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them: Ye
shall be holy; for I the LORD your God am holy.
About 60
years ago in NYC one radio station had “Often imitated never duplicate” and
that holiness from HASHEM is what we must strive for even if we are cheap
imitations.
3 Ye shall fear every man his
mother, and his father, and ye shall keep My sabbaths: I am the LORD your
God.
This is
the reverse order of the Aserah Dibros (10 Commandments). To be holy, one must
be able to honor the physical parents before honoring the spiritual Shechina
and Boreh (Creator) and the pathway is set by following the laws of Shabbos, as
it is the holiest of all days.
4 Turn ye not unto the idols,
nor make to yourselves molten gods: I am the LORD your God.
Up until
the time of Shimon HaTzaddik, there was a Yetzer to preform Avoda Zara but he
performed prayers and supplications with the Sanhedrin that led to the remove
of the Yetzer for idolatry and incest.
5 And when ye offer a sacrifice
of peace-offerings unto the LORD, ye shall offer it that ye may be
accepted. 6 It shall be eaten the same day ye offer it, and on the
morrow; and if aught remain until the third day, it shall be burnt with
fire. 7 And if it be eaten at all on the third day, it is a vile
thing; it shall not be accepted.
I have
no idea if it is a vile thing because of even with no blood and salt the holy
flesh of the Korban could carry infection as no refrigeration existed or it is
vile because the L-RD said not more that this time period or both reasons.
However, we are told a time limit and exceeding the time limit is vile and with
a command from the Creator even without a reason that is enough but humans love
reasons.
8 But every one that eats it
shall bear his iniquity, because he hath profaned the holy thing of the LORD;
and that soul shall be cut off from his people. 9 And when ye reap
the harvest of your land, thou shalt not wholly reap the corner of thy field,
neither shalt thou gather the gleaning of thy harvest. 10 And thou
shalt not glean thy vineyard, neither shalt thou gather the fallen fruit of thy
vineyard; thou shalt leave them for the poor and for the stranger: I am the
LORD your God.
Charity
begins with your choice of area you live. You should not live inside an area of
rich snobs or flaunters but rather in an area that is neither very wealthy or
very poor but in close proximity to both.
11 Ye shall not steal; neither
shall ye deal falsely, nor lie one to another. 12 And ye shall not
swear by My name falsely, so that thou profane the name of thy God: I am the
LORD.
Lying is
a bad trait and can lead to thievery and all sorts of deceptiveness. Between
male and female, it can cause much grief. A few years ago, a Yeshiva fellow was
engaged to a G-D fearing girl. He was impatient and she agreed to go to the
Mikvah prior to the Chupa. They were on course to be married. However, when the
bride to be missed her period and did a pregnancy test he got feet so cold that
he fled to a European Climate. The young girl so distraught that she was lied
to and left in the lurch, that she became suicidal. The Beis Din agreed it was
a case of Pekuach Nefesh and she was permitted to have an abortion. In the
beginning perhaps he had no intention to lie but he was far too immature to
marry and the young maiden was deceived. In my opinion, it turned out best for
her; but at a horrible price on her conscience and name. There are few morals
to this story. First, the couple failed at being holy for they did not wait for
holy matrimony. Second, if you are not mature enough to handle being a parent,
you have no business being married. Third, if you are too impatient to wait for
marriage then move up the wedding date otherwise be prepared to pay the piper.
13 Thou shalt not oppress thy
neighbor, nor rob him; the wages of a hired servant shall not abide with thee
all night until the morning.
In Sefer
Devarim we have not to move or remove the boundary stone that too is a form of
robbery. There are contract workers, weekly and monthly workers but a daily
worker has to be paid daily. This goes for people renting and paying the
electricity to the property owner etc. They are not to delay payment.
14 Thou shalt not curse the
deaf, nor put an obstacle before the blind, but thou shalt fear thy God: I am
the LORD.
One has
to be a disturbed individual to put an obstacle or something that will make a
blind person stumble. As we age, our eyesight and hearing is at a loss. It is
an unfortunate fact. The same person with a hearing aid might just hear and
understand the curses of the idiot.
15 Ye shall not do
unrighteousness in judgment; thou shalt not respect the person of the poor, nor
favor the person of the mighty; but in righteousness shalt thou judge thy
neighbor.
It is
easy for a judge to say that the wealthy person owes money to the poor man or
the poor man get better treatment. For Korach was very wealthy in his day and
perhaps richer relative to outstanding wealthy of our generation. If I had a
lawsuit against Elon Musk or Warren Buffet, I would not want the Judge to be on
their payroll or for them to lose just because I am a few billions less wealthy
monetarily I would want to win my case on merit.
16 Thou shalt not go up and
down as a talebearer among thy people; neither shalt thou stand idly by the
blood of thy neighbor: I am the LORD.
Lashon
HaRa kills even if 100% true. It kills the one talked about by embarrassment.
It kills or lessens from HaOlam HaBa of the person who tells it and to the one
who listens to it. This is one of the problems with some of the news articles
and especial Hollywood Tabloids, which feed on this.
17 Thou shalt not hate thy
brother in thy heart; thou shalt surely rebuke thy neighbor, and not bear sin
because of him. 18 Thou shalt not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge
against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbor as
thyself: I am the LORD.
I love
MY Creatures. Therefore, you should love my creatures. From Cal V’ Chomer for a
person with a wicked neighbor to pray for his repentance rather than his
demise.
19 Ye shall keep MY statutes.
Thou shalt not let thy cattle gender with a diverse kind; thou shalt not sow
thy field with two kinds of seed; neither shall there come upon thee a garment
of two kinds of stuff mingled together.
For
exciting a child, Dr. Seuss had “What happened on Mulberry Street” with a
Giraffe and Elephant pulling a wagon would be forbidden but looks nice for a
small child but the strength of an elephant vs. a giraffe is physically a
burden on the Giraffe with a Giraffe or Elephant with Elephant but not two
species like a horse and a mule or a donkey and a mule or an ox and a donkey.
20 And whosoever lies carnally
with a woman, that is a bondmaid, designated for a man, and not at all redeemed,
nor was freedom given her; there shall be inquisition; they shall not be put to
death, because she was not free. 21 And he shall bring his forfeit
unto the LORD, unto the door of the tent of meeting, even a ram for a
guilt-offering. 22 And the priest shall make atonement for him with
the ram of the guilt-offering before the LORD for his sin which he hath sinned;
and he shall be forgiven for his sin which he hath sinned.
He
desires her and she has not yet been with the Eved, then there is a possibility
of freeing her and doing things properly and usually a bondmaid is a non-Jew
who went to Mikvah. However, if she was a Jewish girl sold into bondship then
either the man or his son should marry her. The reason being is that a poor
Cohain or Talmud Chacham sells his daughter to the rich man to learn via her
bond what the family wants and to marry her off rich.
23 And when ye shall come into
the land, and shall have planted all manner of trees for food, then ye shall
count the fruit thereof as forbidden; three years shall it be as forbidden unto
you; it shall not be eaten. 24 And in the fourth year all the fruit
thereof shall be holy, for giving praise unto the LORD. 25 But in the
fifth year may ye eat of the fruit thereof, that it may yield unto you more
richly the increase thereof: I am the LORD your God.
The
first three years, the fruit is too holy to eat. The fourth year one may eat in
holiness and finally the fifth year it is an average piece of fruit.
26 Ye shall not eat with the
blood; neither shall you practice divination nor soothsaying.
One of
the bored group of Hollywood super-wealthy entertainers get their entertainment
by drinking blood on full and new moons. Not only does the Torah forbid this, but
also it is something of the other soul going into one. For Pekuach Nefesh one
can donate part of his life-blood to save another but not for drinking and
eating.
27 Ye shall not round the
corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy
beard. 28 Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead,
nor imprint any marks upon you: I am the LORD.
29 Profane not thy daughter,
to make her a harlot, lest the land turn into harlotry, and the land become
full of lewdness.
The
difference between the poor man selling his daughter to the rich man was for
the purpose of future marriage in holiness vs. this horrible lewdness to make
money from the wretched child though such abuse. The first is for a bright
future the second is horrible.
30 Ye shall keep MY Sabbaths,
and reverence MY sanctuary: I am the LORD.
Again the importance of Shabbos is
mentioned.
31 Turn ye not unto the
ghosts, nor unto familiar spirits; seek them not out, to be defiled by them: I
am the LORD your God.
Séances,
divination, etc. is forbidden.
32 Thou shalt rise up before
the hoary head, and honor the face of the old man, and thou shalt fear thy God:
I am the LORD.
As I
approach 75, people are doing this to me and I became less and less able to
observe this Mitzvah on older Sages.
33 And if a stranger sojourn
with thee in your land, ye shall not do him wrong. 34 The stranger
that sojourn with you shall be unto you as the home-born among you, and thou
shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the
LORD your God.
The Goy
visiting the land of Eretz Yisrael should be treated humanely given the honor and
dignity due to a human being and not taken advantage of. So that one can make a
Kiddush HASHEM.
35 Ye shall do no
unrighteousness in judgment, in meteyard, in weight, or in
measure. 36 Just balances, just weights, a just ephah, and a just
hin, shall ye have: I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of
Egypt. 37 And ye shall observe all My statutes, and all Mine
ordinances, and do them: I am the LORD.
One must
guarantee the use of standard and fair weights and measures in business and
everyday life.
The pressured adventures of Rabbi Pauli before Pesach.
A normal
week for me is plain crazy busy a normal pressured week is Meshuga crazy busy
and a very pressured week is Loco Meshugina Crazy. So after over two years away
from the States and a voucher from British Airlines, I planned to be Passover
in America by my son. About a month after I made my plans, I started working on
my US income taxes as I would be in the USA around April 15th
extended to April 18th.
As my
plans fell into place, Omicron hit Israel and the skies were closed. British
Airlines changed from a normal connect to 22 to 29 hours in transit each way
losing two more days and becoming impossible to travel. So I switched to EL AL
and the price two what I was paying for on British.

The Helpful
Prisoners by Yerachmiel Tilles

It was early morning when
the police knocked on his door. In front of the stunned faces of his family the
officers arrested him and put him in handcuffs. Before he could open his mouth
he was taken to the police station, where he soon found himself in a holding
cell, already occupied by criminals.
Rabbi Menachem-Mendel of
Horodok/Vitebsk, one of the greatest students of the Maggid of Mezritch,
had not the slightest idea what crime he could have committed that caused the
authorities to arrest him as a lowly criminal. Yet, he was extensively
interrogated and accused of serious misconduct.
Slowly the situation was
clarified somewhat: someone had invented a false accusation against him and
made him out to be a powerful criminal. Rabbi Menachem Mendel tried to convince
the interrogators of their mistake. He told them that all the accusations
directed at him were nothing more than slander and lies, that there was no
connection between them and reality.
His explanations fell on
deaf ears. The interrogators wouldn't budge from their position and pressured
him to admit to the grave accusations. When he refused he was thrown back into
the crowded cell.
There, on the hard board,
surrounded by coarse thugs, Rabbi Menachem Mendel considered his situation. He
withdrew within himself and began a self-examination to try and discover the
spiritual reason that would explain why he had been thrust in this untenable
situation.
When it was time for prayer
he went to a corner, faced the wall, closed his eyes and concentrated deeply on
his prayer, ignoring the noise around him and immersing himself in the words,
in which he found support and consolation.
Turning around after
finishing his prayers he noticed one of the other prisoners watching him
attentively. At first he ignored the man, but the next time he prayed he
noticed that the other man again watched him carefully. The prisoner didn't
take his eyes of him, from the beginning of his prayer till the end.
Rabbi Menachem Mendel
studied the man who looked like any other gentile just like all the rest of the
prisoners. Soon after, the man approached him, offering him help and concerning
himself with Rabbi Menachem Mendel's well-being and comfort. It was obvious
that he was going out of his way to be of service to the holy-looking Jew.
Also in the following days
the prisoner sought Rabbi Menachem Mendel's company. He humbly did his utmost
to be of service to Rabbi Menachem Mendel. The latter decided to find out more
about this helpful prisoner.
It became clear that the
man had been waiting for this. With tears running down his cheeks he began to
tell his life story, interrupted again and again by sobs.
He was a Jew and his name
was Nachum. Life's hardships dragged him down to crime. He sunk lower and lower
until he became a burglar. He would break into houses at nights and steal
everything he could lay his hands on. For a long time he lived this way, always
afraid and every night taking great risks.
And then one day he was
caught and thrown into jail. None of his Jewish brothers came to his
assistance. Quite the opposite, those Jews who knew who he was were secretly
glad that they finally got rid of the damage he caused them. So Nachum found
himself alone and deserted in his distress.
Rabbi Menachem Mendel
listened with great attention to his story.
"All of a sudden you
arrived, standing there, praying", continued Nachum, "the sight of
which touched my heart and started to melt the indifference to my Jewishness
that has surrounded me for so many years. For the first time in my life I felt
true regret for my evil behavior. Please, help me find a way of teshuva
(return) and atone for my sins."
At that moment a thought
crossed Rabbi Menachem Mendel's mind: here, in front of him, was the reason why
he was incarcerated for a crime he had not committed. A Jewish man, whose soul
is crying out in misery for help, and hoping to be rescued from the pit in
which she is trapped.
Rabbi Menachem Mendel
decided to dedicate himself entirely to help Nachum. He started teaching him
Torah and Fear of Heaven, and guiding him how to repent and to reject his bad
tendencies and to attain to a correct way of living.
Nachum proved to be a
serious and devoted student. He accepted upon himself all the instruction Rabbi
Menachem Mendel gave him. He stopped eating non-kosher food, put on Tefillin
every morning and his awe of G-d increased daily until he succeeded in
transforming himself to be a genuine observant Jew.
"You should
know," said his special personal Rabbi, "that we are still at the
beginning of the way. Now G-d will help; we will be released from imprisonment,
and then we will travel together to the Rebbe, the Maggid of Mezritch, and he
will show you a complete way of return."
While he was still talking
to Nachum, the commander of the jail entered to inform Rabbi Menachem Mendel
that he is released. The accusations against him were investigated and proved
to be groundless. The interrogators came to the decision that he was innocent.
To the amazement of the
officer the prisoner said with finality: "I am not leaving here unless my
friend Nachum is released as well!"
The commander thought that
he hadn't heard correctly. Never had he came across or even heard of a prisoner
who refused to be released! Looking at Nachum he said: "This prisoner
hasn't completed his sentence; he cannot be released."
Rabbi Menachem Mendel did
not give in. He demanded to speak to the regional judge. When that was
arranged, the rabbi promised him that he would take Nachum under his supervision
and see to it that he will not steal any more or harm anyone.
The judge was impressed by
Rabbi Menachem Mendel's personality and gave instructions to release Nachum
immediately.
When they arrived at the
house of the Maggid of Mezritch, even before they entered, the Maggid said to
those surrounding him: "For this soul I have waited." Indeed, Nachum
changed his way of life entirely and became a faithful student of the Maggid.

Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Vitebsk/Horodok [of blessed memory: 5490 - 1 Iyar
5548 (1730 - May 1788.)] was an elder disciple of the Maggid of
Mizritch and one of the earliest Chasidic rebbes. He led the first
modern aliyah to Israel, in 5537 (1777 C.E.), where he and three hundred
Chasidim and others settled in Tzefat (Safed). After a few years most of the
group moved to Tiberias, where he is buried in the "Students of the Baal
Shem Tov" section of the Old Cemetery. His works include Pri
HaAretz and Likutei Amarim.
Rabbi Dov Ber [of
blessed memory: c.5460 - 19 Kislev 5533 (c.1700- Dec. 1772)], the son of Avraham
and Chava, known as the Maggid of Mezritch, succeeded his master,
the Baal Shem Tov, as the head of the Chasidic movement. Most of
the leading chasidic dynasties originate from his disciples and his
descendents. The classic anthologies of his teachings are Likutei
Amarim and Torah Ohr (combined by Kehas Publishing as Maggid
Devorav l'Yaakov), and Ohr HaEmmes.
