Aharon Yehuda Leib ben Chana had a success tonsil and adenoid operation today.
The Rabbi does his homework with Menashe
(nephew-forester child).
Menashe has a very hi IQ
and reads Hebrew super-fast. I gave him my question below and he came up with
the answer which makes sense. It is a Medrash that I learned 50years or so ago
and forgot. He loved the question and went to it.
I analyzed my problem
with Rabbi Yacov Goldberg Shlita after the Minyan Shabbos evening and told him
Menashe’s answer at Mincha.
We are missing a few
details in the story which I remember of the twin sister born to Kayn and two
females in the triplet set with Hevel. We are also missing if this occurred in
Gan Eden or years later. We do not know the population of the earth.
4:1 And the man
knew Eve his wife; and she conceived and bore Cain, and said: 'I have gotten a
man with the help of the LORD.' 2 And again she bore his brother
Abel.
Per the Medrash this
occurred on the first day without pain after each intercourse before they ate
the fruit.
And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but
Cain was a tiller of the ground. 3 And in process of time it came to
pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the
LORD. 4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and
of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his
offering; 5 but unto Cain and to his offering He had not respect. And
Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.
Kayn offered inferior
fruit – not the largest and nicest looking. Hevel brought the largest and
fattest first-born animals of his flock.
6 And the LORD said unto Cain:
'Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? 7 If thou do
well, shall it not be lifted up? and if thou do not well, sin couches at the
door; and unto thee is its desire, but thou mayest rule over
it.' 8 And Cain spoke unto Abel his brother. And it came to pass,
when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and
slew him.
According to the
Medrash, he might not have had the intention of murdering his brother but just
to cause hurt but the result was in Hevel’s death.
9 And the LORD said unto Cain:
'Where is Abel thy brother?' And he said: 'I know not; am I my brother's
keeper?'
Similar to his father
saying “We are naked” so here too trying to get out of something bad he did.
10 And He said: 'What hast thou
done? the voice of thy brother's blood cries unto Me from the
ground. 11 And now cursed art thou from the ground, which has opened
her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand. 12 When thou
till the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a
fugitive and a wanderer shalt thou be in the earth.'
Still the ground
produced products than enabled people to live almost 1,000 years without aging.
But this was prior to the flood and the changes that would occur.
13 And Cain said unto the LORD:
'My punishment is greater than I can bear. 14 Behold, YOU have driven
me out this day from the face of the land; and from Thy face shall I be hid;
and I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth; and it will come to
pass, that whosoever finds me will slay me.'
Who is there to slay him? This appears
according to Menashe to be either in Gan Eden or right after. The population
from the seed of Hevel would be zero or very small and children or young adults
if born in Gan Eden. In this case from whom or what Kayn worried about?
Kayn is worried about the animals as
Hevel was their beloved care taker and he was killed by jealous Kayn. The Medrash
goes on to state that HASHEM made for Kayn a coat consisting of hairs of
animals and skin that he looked like one of their type and would not be armed
by any animal.
15 And the LORD said unto him:
'Therefore whosoever slays Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.'
And the LORD set a sign for Cain, lest any finding him should smite
him. 16 And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in
the land of Nod, on the east of Eden. 17 And Cain knew his wife; and she
conceived, and bore Enoch; and he built a city, and called the name of the city
after the name of his son Enoch.
It appears that we are
missing information here if Kayn and Hevel too had children in Gan Eden? Or
after Gan Eden?
Skipping the seven generations after Kayn and the invention
of musical instruments and skills in metals and weapons and the death of Kayn
by accident.
4:23 And Lamech said unto his wives: Adah and Zillah, hear my
voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech; for I have slain a man for
wounding me, and a young man for bruising me;
Lamech is in the 7th
generation or a grandchild with 4 greats in from of him from Kayn.
Hearken
to my voice: For
his wives separated from being intimate with him because he had slain Cain and
Tubal-Cain, his (Lemech’s) son. [The story was] that Lemech was blind, and
Tubal-Cain was leading him. He spotted Cain, who appeared to him as an animal,
and he told his father to draw the bow, and he killed him. As soon as he
learned that it was his grandfather Cain, he clapped his hands together [in
anguish] and clapped his son between them and killed him. So, his wives
separated from him, and he attempted to appease them. Another Pshat hearken to my voice: to hearken to me to agree to live with me, for was the man I
killed, killed because of my wounding? Did I wound him intentionally, that the
wound should be attributed to my name? And the child I killed, was he killed by
my bruising, i.e., on account of my [intentional] bruising? This is a question.
Did I not do it inadvertently and not intentionally? This is not my wound, and
this is not my bruise. פֶּצַע is a wound inflicted
by a sword or an arrow, machadure in Old French.
The Medrash states that Tuval-Cain
spotted what he thought was an animal that he was hunting for skins (for Kayn
had the coat of animal skins). So he shot an arrow that killed Kayn by
accident. He and Tuval-Cain went over and discovered that the ‘animal’ was
Kayn. With this he banged his hands together so hard that both sides of the Carotid
Artery of Tuval Kayn were hit so hard that
they ruptured.
24 If Cain shall be avenged
sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.
If Cain be avenged sevenfold: Cain,
who killed intentionally, was given an extension until seven generations. How
much more should I, who have killed unintentionally, be given many times seven.
Seventy-seven fold: Heb.
שִׁבְעִים וְשִׁבְעָה An expression meaning
many sevens is used here. So did Rabbi Tanchuma explain it. [This does not
appear in extant editions of Tanchuma, but in Yalkut Shim’oni it is quoted from
Tanchuma]. In Midrash Genesis Rabbah (23:4): Lemech did not kill anyone, but
his wives separated from him after they had fulfilled [the commandment of]
propagation, because a decree had been issued to destroy Cain’s seed after
seven generations. They said, “Why should we give birth in vain? Tomorrow, the
Flood will come and inundate everything!” He answered them, “Have I slain a man
for whom I should be wounded? Did I slay Abel, who was a man in stature and a
child in years, that my seed should be annihilated for that iniquity? If Cain,
who killed, was given an extension of seven generations, I, who did not slay-
how much more so should I be given an extension of many sevens!” Now this is an
absurd deduction from a minor to a major case, [because] if so, the Holy One,
blessed be He, could not exact His debt nor fulfill His word.
Now he came to possess
the famous coat of Kayn but the women must have given it to Naamah before the
flood and it was in the Teva. [In ancient Hebrew Teva means Ark it has a more
modern meaning of box is spelled Tav Yud Beis Hay it is not to be confused with
Tet Bet Ayin and meaning nature. The Nature in Heb. Has the same Gematria as
ELOKIM so now we know whom is in control of natural events.]
10:8 And Cush begot Nimrod; he
began to be a mighty one in the earth. 9 He was a mighty hunter
before the LORD; wherefore it is said: 'Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before the
LORD.'
A mighty
hunter: He ensnared people’s minds
with his speech and misled them to rebel against the Omnipresent. — [from Gen.
Rabbah 37:2] Before the Lord: He
intended to provoke Him to His face. — [from Sifra Bechukosai 2:2] Therefore
it is said: About any man who is
brazenly wicked, who recognizes his Master and intends to rebel [לִמְרֹד] against Him, it is said, “This one is like Nimrod [נִמְרֹד], a mighty hunter.”
He inherited the garment of Kayn and
the animals became subservient to him. So he therefore had an easy time to
hunt.
25:27 And the boys grew; and Esau was a cunning hunter, a
man of the field; and Jacob was a quiet man, dwelling in tents. 28 Now Isaac loved Esau, because
he did eat of his venison; and Rebekah loved Jacob.
On the day that Avraham died, Esav did
5 capitol sins, he killed a man, Nimrod, and stole his garment. He raped an
engaged (married) woman, committed idol worship and ate a piece of meat from a
living animal.
Parsha Noach
We ended last week’s
Parsha that Noach would comfort us and that he found grace in the eyes of the
L-RD.

These are the generations of Noah. Noah was in his
generations a man righteous and whole-hearted; Noah walked with God.
The Rabbis argue that he was righteous
in his generation but in the generation of Avraham or others would he have been
considered righteous? I go out on the street and see our WOKE generation. I say
if you are not waking around tattooed head to toe and rings all over dressed
like a slut, pimp or gigolo you are still under control in a wicked and cruel
world.
10 And Noah begot three sons,
Shem, Ham, and Japheth. 11 And the earth was corrupt before God, and
the earth was filled with violence.
The earth was filled with violence =
Hamas and just like the terrorists extorted the shop owners, had their way with
the opposite sex, murder and at that time idol worship today a god who forces
their religion on non-Muslims.
12 And God saw the earth, and,
behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way upon the
earth.
Mankind was living too long. They were
not the Rav Shach, Rav Feinstein or Rav Kanievsky types. Rather they were
filled with all perverse idea bestiality and interspecies among the animals,
stealing games despite abundance that everybody tasted from vendors less than a
Peruta worth of food and the masses did this from vendor to vendor without
buying and after the accidental homicide of Kayn, murder became more rampant.
It was similar to no bail free get out of jail in some WOKE States in the USA.
Or DA’s that let people steal under $1000 without prosecution. There are areas
where the stores just boarded up in the USA. IF YOU DO NOT LEARN FROM HISTORY,
IT WILL REPEAT ITSELF.
13 And God said unto Noah: 'The
end of all flesh is come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence
through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.
ON NOV. 8TH IN THE USA AND
NOV. 1ST IN ISRAEL THE PEOPLE HAVE A CHANCE TO REDEEM THEMSELVES. We
have a tradition that the Moshiach will come if all are wicked or all repent. The
other tradition/condition is that the world will continue to exist if there are
36 hidden Tzadikim.
14 Make thee an ark of gopher
wood; with rooms shalt thou make the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without
with pitch. 15 And this is how thou shalt make it: the length of the
ark three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it
thirty cubits. 16 A light shalt thou make to the ark, and to a cubit
shalt thou finish it upward; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side
thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.
The design of the Teva was not like in
pictures but a giant wooden box with a small top floor for air under a slanted
roof and perhaps glass plate for a Zohar or light. (Having read of The Baghdad
Battery is believed to be about 2000 years old (from the Parthian period,
roughly 250 BCE to CE 250). The jar was found in Khujut Rabu just outside
Baghdad and is composed of a clay jar with a stopper made of asphalt.
Sticking through the asphalt is an iron rod surrounded by a copper cylinder.
And Fred Juneman’s speculation from Hieroglyphics of Tessler Coils in Pyramids
that could have been the Zohar.) There is a Medrash of a shining or Radium type
of stone.
17 And I, behold, I do bring the
flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of
life, from under heaven; everything that is in the earth shall
perish. 18 But I will establish My covenant with thee; and thou shalt
come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with
thee. 19 And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort
shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male
and female. 20 Of the fowl after their kind, and of the cattle after
their kind, of every creeping thing of the ground after its kind, two of every
sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive. 21 And take thou unto
thee of all food that is eaten, and gather it to thee; and it shall be for food
for thee, and for them.' 22 Thus did Noah; according to all that God
commanded him, so did he. 7:1 And the LORD said unto Noah: 'Come thou and all
thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before Me in this
generation. 2 Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee seven and
seven, each with his mate; and of the beasts that are not clean two [and two],
each with his mate; 3 of the fowl also of the air, seven and seven,
male and female; to keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth.
The Chumash is not a book to mince
words and poetry but instead of using Tumay it goes out to use 7 more words to
say not clean so as to give honor to these creations/creatures.
4 For yet seven days, and I will
cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living
substance that I have made will I blot out from off the face of the
earth.'
For the Shiva for Metushaleh. The sky
became bright these 7 days like that of the primeval 7days of creation –
Medrash.
5 And Noah did according unto all
that the LORD commanded him. 6 And Noah was six hundred years old
when the flood of waters was upon the earth. 7 And Noah went in, and
his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him, into the ark, because of
the waters of the flood. 8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are
not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creeps upon the
ground, 9 there went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, male and
female, as God commanded Noah. 10 And it came to pass after the seven
days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth. 11 In the six
hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of
the month, on the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up,
and the windows of heaven were opened. 12 And the rain was upon the
earth forty days and forty nights. 13 In the selfsame day entered
Noah, and Shem, and Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah's wife, and
the three wives of his sons with them, into the ark; 14 they, and
every beast after its kind, and all the cattle after their kind, and every
creeping thing that creeps upon the earth after its kind, and every fowl after
its kind, every bird of every sort. 15 And they went in unto Noah
into the ark, two and two of all flesh wherein is the breath of
life. 16 And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh,
as God commanded him; and the LORD shut him in.
G-D shut him in. He could have shut
himself in with a scaffold rope to put pitch on the door and from the inside.
However, when it started raining buckets and springs sprang up all of a sudden,
the token fell and they wanted to hop on the Ark after being warned for
120years by Noach. HASHEM sealed them in by sending lions and tigers around the
Teva to keep out the wicked who neither repented or listened. Legend has it
that Og, Melech Bashan clung to the Ark and saved himself and lived on seaweed
and/or fish. Per this Medrash, he must have been less wicked than the others
and was allowed to save himself.
17 And the flood was forty days
upon the earth; and the waters increased, and bore up the ark, and it was
lifted up above the earth. 18 And the waters prevailed, and increased
greatly upon the earth; and the ark went upon the face of the
waters. 19 And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and
all the high mountains that were under the whole heaven were
covered. 20 Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the
mountains were covered. 21 And all flesh perished that moved upon the
earth, both fowl, and cattle, and beast, and every swarming thing that swarmed
upon the earth, and every man; 22 all in whose nostrils was the
breath of the spirit of life, whatsoever was in the dry land,
died. 23 And He blotted out every living substance which was upon the
face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and creeping thing, and fowl of the
heaven; and they were blotted out from the earth; and Noah only was left, and
they that were with him in the ark. 24 And the waters prevailed upon
the earth a hundred and fifty days.
Noah was 15 Amos about Ararat. But
what about other mountains – Himalayas, Andes, Alps, Rockies? There are two
possibilities to answer this question. These are geologically newer mountains
and still active some of them. The sprung up later. The man in the Ark is named
Nu-Wah in Chinese (flowering woman in translation but the sound of Noach). So
if the Andes and Himalayas existed perhaps they were covered during the flood
by 15 Amos of ice so that we find the “ice man” of thousands of years ago in
flesh in the Alps google for more details. In short, whether liquid or solid
water, human kind and animals could not survive on the planet in a physical
form except in the Teva where bears, alligators and many others hibernated most
of the time.
8:1 And God remembered
Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that were with him in the ark;
and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters
assuaged; 2 the fountains also of the deep and the windows of heaven
were stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained. 3 And the
waters returned from off the earth continually; and after the end of a hundred
and fifty days the waters decreased. 4 And the ark rested in the
seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of
Ararat.
The 7th month here is not Tishrei but
7months from the start of the flood in Cheshvan. This appears to be in Sivan
unless there was two Adars and then it would be Iyar.
5 And the waters decreased
continually until the tenth month; in the tenth month, on the first day of the
month, were the tops of the mountains seen.
Elul unless there was two Adars and
then it would be Av.
6 And it came to pass at the end
of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had
made. 7 And he sent forth a raven, and it went forth to and fro,
until the waters were dried up from off the earth.
Close to the end of Tishrei or unless
there was two Adars and then it would be Elul.
8 And he sent forth a dove from
him, to see if the waters were abated from off the face of the
ground. 9 But the dove found no rest for the sole of her foot, and
she returned unto him to the ark, for the waters were on the face of the whole
earth; and he put forth his hand, and took her, and brought her in unto him
into the ark. 10 And he stayed yet other seven days; and again, he
sent forth the dove out of the ark. 11 And the dove came in to him at
eventide; and lo in her mouth an olive-leaf freshly plucked; so Noah knew that
the waters were abated from off the earth.
This is more or less Cheshvan almost a
year after the great flood.
12 And he stayed yet other seven
days; and sent forth the dove; and she returned not again unto him
anymore. 13 And it came to pass in the six hundred and first year, in
the first month, the first day of the month, the waters were dried up from off
the earth; and Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and behold,
the face of the ground was dried.
A year after the flood.
14 And in the second month, on
the seven and twentieth day of the month, was the earth dry.
This is 13months. So either this is 27th
of Kislev or the 27th of Mar Cheshvan if there were two Adars that
year.
15 And God spoke unto Noah,
saying: 16 'Go forth from the ark, thou, and thy wife, and thy sons,
and thy sons' wives with thee. 17 Bring forth with thee every living
thing that is with thee of all flesh, both fowl, and cattle, and every creeping
thing that creeps upon the earth; that they may swarm in the earth, and be
fruitful, and multiply upon the earth.' 18 And Noah went forth, and
his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him; 19 every beast,
every creeping thing, and every fowl, whatsoever moves upon the earth, after
their families; went forth out of the ark. 20 And Noah built an altar
unto the LORD; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and
offered burnt-offerings on the altar. 21 And the LORD smelled the
sweet savor; and the LORD said in His heart: 'I will not again curse the ground
any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his
youth; neither will I again smite any more everything living, as I have
done. 22 While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, and cold and
heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.'
Prior to the flood there might have
been a straight axis for earth and no real seasons like in Hawaii the seasons
and wobbling axis may have come after the flood – just a theory.
9:1 And God blessed Noah and his sons,
and said unto them: 'Be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the
earth. 2 And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every
beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, and upon all wherewith the
ground teems, and upon all the fishes of the sea: into your hand are they
delivered. 3 Every moving thing that lives shall be for food for you;
as the green herb have I given you all. 4 Only flesh with the life
thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat.
The earth no longer can
produce after the flood the same fruits, berries and vegetables for a vegan
lifestyle but combination of food for eating.
5 And surely your blood of your lives will I
require; at the hand of every beast will I require it; and at the hand of man,
even at the hand of every man's brother, will I require the life of
man. 6 Whoso sheds man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed; for
in the image of God made He man. 7 And you, be ye fruitful, and
multiply; swarm in the earth, and multiply therein.'
Nobody alive at that
time believe in idolatry and no more blood shedding. Courts of law like the
heavenly court should be set up and of course no blood in meat
8 And God spoke unto Noah, and to his sons with
him, saying: 9 'As for Me, behold, I establish My covenant with you,
and with your seed after you; 10 and with every living creature that
is with you, the fowl, the cattle, and every beast of the earth with you; of
all that go out of the ark, even every beast of the earth. 11 And I
will establish My covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any
more by the waters of the flood; neither shall there anymore be a flood to
destroy the earth.' 12 And God said: 'This is the token of the
covenant which I make between Me and you and every living creature that is with
you, for perpetual generations: 13 I have set My bow in the cloud,
and it shall be for a token of a covenant between Me and the
earth. 14 And it shall come to pass, when I bring clouds over the
earth, and the bow is seen in the cloud, 15 that I will remember My
covenant, which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh;
and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all
flesh. 16 And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it,
that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living
creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.'
A rainbow may be pretty
but it is a sign that we are wicked and G-D did not destroy our world.
18 And the sons of Noah, that went forth
from the ark, were Shem, and Ham, and Japheth; and Ham is the father of
Canaan. 19 These three were the sons of Noah, and of these was the
whole earth overspread. 20 And Noah the husbandman began, and planted
a vineyard. 21 And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was
uncovered within his tent. 22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the
nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without.
And Canaan castrated
Noach because of inheritance.
23 And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid
it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of
their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father's
nakedness. 24 And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his
youngest son had done unto him. 25 And he said: Cursed be Canaan; a
servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren. 26 And he said:
Blessed be the LORD, the God of Shem; and let Canaan be their
servant. 27 God enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of
Shem; and let Canaan be their servant. 28 And Noah lived after the
flood three hundred and fifty years. 29 And all the days of Noah were
nine hundred and fifty years; and he died. …
11:1 And the whole earth was of one language and of one
speech. 2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed east, that they
found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. 3 And they
said one to another: 'Come, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly.' And
they had brick for stone, and slime had they for mortar. 4 And they
said: 'Come, let us build us a city, and a tower, with its top in heaven, and
let us make us a 1/3rdname; lest we be scattered abroad upon the
face of the whole earth.' 5 And the LORD came down to see the city
and the tower, which the children of men built. 6 And the LORD said:
'Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language; and this is what
they begin to do; and now nothing will be withholden from them, which they
purpose to do. 7 Come, let us go down, and there confound their
language, that they may not understand one another's speech.' 8 So
the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth; and
they left off to build the city.
The children of Shem and
Ever (Chapter 10 skipped) were the only ones who did not build the tower to go
to heaven and fight G-D and the Angels and not trust there would not be another
flood. So a massive earthquake occurred in Bavel and 1/3rd fell
down, 1/3 of the tower remained and 1/3rd was buried.
9 Therefore was the name of it called Babel; because the LORD
did there confound the language of all the earth; and from thence did the LORD
scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth. 10 These are the generations of Shem. Shem
was a hundred years old, and begot Arpachshad two years after the
flood. 11 And Shem lived after he begot Arpachshad five hundred
years, and begot sons and daughters. 12 And Arpachshad lived five and
thirty years, and begot Shelah. … 14 And Shelah lived thirty years,
and begot Eber. … 16 And Eber lived four and thirty years, and begot
Peleg. 17 And Eber lived after he begot Peleg four hundred and thirty
years, and begot sons and daughters.
He was the ruler or family head during the days of the Tower as
Shem and Ever were learning and Noach was busy telling over and over the
tradition from Avraham and Metushaleh.
18 And Peleg lived thirty years, and begot Reu. … 20 And
Reu lived two and thirty years, and begot Serug. 22 And Serug lived
thirty years, and begot Nahor. … 24 And Nahor lived nine and
twenty years, and begot Terah. … 26 And Terah lived seventy years,
and begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran. 27 Now these are the generations

The story of Yankele the Nebbich (A poor soul who is good natured
but can’t do much)
“Oy, Yankele, Yankele, will you ever
amount to anything?”
Yankele had heard these words from
his parents, from his teachers in Cheder, from his friends, in fact from
everyone.
But what could he do? – He could
hardly read or write, he was physically weak, he couldn’t do any work at all,
so he was universally known in the small Polish Shtetl where he lived as
“Yankele the Nebbich”.
And yet…and yet he had a heart of
gold. Whenever anyone needed help, Yankele was willing to oblige. True, he
couldn’t do much, but everyone appreciated his intentions. Whenever he’d earn a
few miserable kopeks, he’d give generously to tzedaka.
So, when the time came for him to
get married, the people of the Shtetl decided to find him a job. A sinecure,
something he could feel was a proper job instead of subsisting on handouts.
And so they appointed him “Mashiach-watcher
of the Shtetl”. His job was to sit all day long on the top of highest point of
the Shtetl, holding a large bell. And as soon as he’d see Mashiach coming, he’d
have to ring his bell as loudly as he could, so that everyone on the Shtetl
would know that Mashiach was on his way.
They paid him 10 złotys a month. A
small salary, but more money than Yankele the Nebbich had ever earned before.
But one evening, Yankele the Nebbich
came home terribly agitated, almost crying. “Oy Yankele”, his wife asked
tenderly, “what’s wrong?”
Yankele sighed: “For the first time
in my life I have a good job, a steady job. For the first time in my life I
earn money by my own efforts. But I’m so frightened. What’s going to happen
when Mashiach comes? This Shtetl won’t need a Mashiach-watcher any more, and
I’ll again be reduced to begging for tzedaka.”
His wife hugged him, stroked the
back of his head, and told him gently: “Don’t worry, Yankele my beloved
husband. Hashem saved us from Pharaoh, He saved us from Haman, He protected us
in good times and bad.
“I’m sure that when the evil day
comes, Hashem will save us from Mashiach as well.”

Is this merely a joke? Or is it
something far deeper?
Yankele the Nebbich had the most
glorious task in the world as Mashiach-watcher. But he saw Mashiach as an
existential threat.
Think of the conversations in New
York, or California, or Golder’s Green, or Gateshead, or Strasbourg:
“I have such a good and steady job
here as community Rabbi. I earn money by my own efforts. But I’m so frightened.
What’s going to happen when Mashiach comes? When everyone moves to Israel this
Shul/Yeshivah/Jewish community won’t exist anymore, even we will have to move
to Israel, where every second-year Yeshivah-bochur knows as much as I do. How
will we live then?”
And the Rebbetzin hugs her husband,
strokes the back of his head, and tells him gently: “Don’t worry, my beloved
husband. Hashem saved us from Pharaoh, He saved us from Haman, He protected us
in good times and bad.
“I’m sure that when the evil day
comes, Hashem will save us from Mashiach as well.”
And the Rabbi in galut smiles and
relaxes, and nods slowly. “Indeed, may G-d in His infinite mercy save us from
Mashiach”.
Like myself, Daniel
tries to make more people Frum and come to Eretz Yisrael. He, in his sarcastic
wit, has shown us how ridiculous it is for a Frum Jew to live outside of
Israel.
Our Rabbis taught that
if some Jew is living outside of Israel and can live in Israel it is like he
has no G-D (not upon us). And if a man lives in Israel and does not observe the
commandments (not out of rebellion) either through ignorance or temptation, it
is if he has a G-D.
