Parsha Vayeira, stories

Parsha Vayaira

Last week, we read about 29-30 years of Abram to Avraham's life from the first time he left Haran and the Bris between the pieces to the circumcision. Lot had departed from Avraham's influence and lived in Sodom. Avraham and Sarah have been promised seed. This week’s Parsha deals with 38 years of the life Avraham and Sarah as they enjoy raising their son. The Medrash hints that they also had a daughter but nothing is mentioned in the Pshat,

18:1 And the LORD appeared unto him by the terebinths of Mamre, as he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;

Avraham was talking to, praying or meditating before HASHEM. Suddenly three Arabs appear on this extremely hot day.

2 and he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood over against him; and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed down to the earth, 3 and said: 'My lord, if now I have found favor in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant.

Chessed to travelers by Avraham to give them a meal fit for a king and then return to ask them to bless G-D who provided the meal.

4 Let now a little water be fetched, and wash your feet, and recline yourselves under the tree.

There are two reasons for this and first and foremost to wash their feet from traveling a long distance in the dust. The second reason was that some Goyim used to worship the dust of the earth.

5And I will fetch a morsel of bread, and stay ye your heart; after that ye shall pass on; forasmuch as ye are come to your servant.' And they said: 'So do, as thou hast said.'

Morsel of food – first bread and butter while they wait for the main course of a full tongue each. It is hard to believe that Avraham would slaughter a full beast for each but perhaps he gave most of his slaughtered cows to the poor. It is not how people acted in the middle east then or now so Avraham became famous for his Chessed to all.

6 And Abraham hastened into the tent unto Sarah, and said: 'Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes.'

The finest meal and probably a version of honey cake for the guests as people did not use sugar then. Imagine getting a loaf of bread, butter, honey cake and then a meal with tongue and perhaps steak.

7 And Abraham ran unto the herd, and fetched a calf tender and good, and gave it unto the servant; and he hastened to dress it.

Avraham is 99 years old and he runs! He is zealous in Mitzvos.

8 And he took curd, and milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they did eat.

And he took cream and milk, etc.: But he did not bring bread, because Sarah became menstruous, for the manner of the women returned to her on that day, and the dough became ritually unclean. — [from B.M. 87a] Cream: the fat of the milk that is skimmed off the top. And the calf that he had prepared: that he had prepared. Each one that he prepared, he took and brought before them. — [from B.M. 86b] And they ate: They appeared to be eating. From here we learn that a person should not deviate from custom. — [from B.M. ad loc., Gen. Rabbah 48:14, Targum Jonathan

9 And they said unto him: 'Where is Sarah thy wife?' And he said: 'Behold, in the tent.'

And they said to him: Heb. אֵלָיו. There are dots over the letters איו in the word אֵלָיו. And we learned: Rabbi Simeon the son of Eleazar says: “Wherever the [undotted] letters are more than the dotted ones, you must expound on the [undotted] letters, etc.” And here, the dotted letters are more than the [undotted] letters, and you must expound on the dotted [letters]. [The meaning is that] they also asked Sarah,“Where (אַיוֹ) is Abraham?” (Gen. Rabbah 48:15) We learn that a person should ask in his lodging place of the husband about the wife, and of the wife about the husband (B.M. 87a). In Bava Metzia (ad loc.) it is said: The ministering angels knew where our mother Sarah was, but [they asked in order] to make known that she was modest, in order to endear her to her husband. Said Rabbi Joseph the son of Chanina: In order to send her a cup of blessing (i.e., the cup of wine upon which the Grace after Meals is recited). Behold in the tent: She is modest. — [from B.M. ad loc., Mid. Ps. 128:3]

How did they know that Sarah was called Sarah? Did Avraham call her by name or it is because they were angels?

10 And He said: 'I will certainly return unto thee when the season comes round; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son.' And Sarah heard in the tent door, which was behind him.

At this time next year: At this time in the coming year. It was Passover, and on the following Passover, Isaac was born, since we do not read כְּעֵת [at “a” time], but כָּעֵת [at “this” time]. כָּעֵת חַיָּה means: at this time, when there will be life for you, when you will all be alive and well. — [from Targum Yerushalmi, Targum Jonathan] I will surely return: The angel did not announce that he [himself] would return to him, but he was speaking to him as an emissary of the Omnipresent. Similarly (above 16:10): “And the angel said to her: I will greatly multiply [your seed],” but he [the angel] did not have the power to multiply [her children], but he spoke as an emissary of the Omnipresent. Here too, it was as an emissary of the Omnipresent that he said this to him. (Elisha said to the Shunamite woman (II Kings 4:16): “At this season, at this time next year, you will be embracing a son.” And she said, “No my lord, O man of God, do not fail your maidservant. Those angels who announced to Sarah said (below verse 14): ‘At the appointed time, I will return,’” [but Elisha did not promise to return]. Elisha replied, “Those angels, who live and endure forever, said, ‘At the appointed time, I will return.’ But I am flesh and blood, alive today and dead tomorrow. Whether I shall be alive or dead, ‘At this time, etc. [you will embrace a son.’”] (Gen. Rabbah 53:2).And it was behind him: The entrance was behind the angel.

On the full moon in the first month.

11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old, and well stricken in age; it had ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.-- 12 And Sarah laughed within herself, saying: 'After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?' 13 And the LORD said unto Abraham: 'Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying: Shall I of a surety bear a child, who am old? 14 Is anything too hard for the LORD. At the set time I will return unto thee, when the season comes round, and Sarah shall have a son.'

At the appointed time: At that time that was appointed, that I set for you yesterday, [when I said] (17:21): “at this time next year.”

It is very hard for a woman who was childless and at 90 lost her monthly youthful timing. Rather she was practical and like her future descendants would hold that “One should not depend on a miracle”. However, Avraham saw miracles and had faith. He jumped into a fired furnace, was ready to sacrifice his son, etc. for him to believe was perhaps easier. This is even though that our Sages tell us that Sarah had stronger prophecy than Avraham.

15 Then Sarah denied, saying: 'I laughed not'; for she was afraid. And He said: 'Nay; but thou didst laugh.' 16 And the men rose up from thence, and looked out toward Sodom; and Abraham went with them to bring them on the way. 17 And the LORD said: 'Shall I hide from Abraham that which I am doing; 18 seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? 19 For I have known him, to the end that he may command his children and his household after him, that they may keep the way of the LORD, to do righteousness and justice; to the end that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which He hath spoken of him.'

We are about to see both Avraham’s love, compassion and Chessed for his fellow man. He is humble but pleads and argues with G-D via the angels.

20 And the LORD said: 'Verily, the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and, verily, their sin is exceeding grievous. 21 I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto Me; and if not, I will know.' 22 And the men turned from thence, and went toward Sodom; but Abraham stood yet before the LORD. 23 And Abraham drew near, and said: 'Wilt Thou indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? 24 Peradventure there are fifty righteous within the city; wilt Thou indeed sweep away and not forgive the place for the fifty righteous that are therein? 25 That be far from Thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked, that so the righteous should be as the wicked; that be far from Thee; shall not the Judge of all the earth do justly?' 26 And the LORD said: 'If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will forgive all the place for their sake.' 27 And Abraham answered and said: 'Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the LORD, who am but dust and ashes. 28 Peradventure there shall lack five of the fifty righteous; wilt Thou destroy all the city for lack of five?' And He said: 'I will not destroy it, if I find there forty and five.' 29 And he spoke unto Him yet again, and said: 'Peradventure there shall be forty found there.' And He said: 'I will not do it for the forty's sake.' 30 And he said: 'Oh, let not the LORD be angry, and I will speak. Peradventure there shall thirty be found there.' And He said: 'I will not do it, if I find thirty there.' 31 And he said: 'Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the LORD. Peradventure there shall be twenty found there.' And He said: 'I will not destroy it for the twenty's sake.' 32 And he said: 'Oh, let not the LORD be angry, and I will speak yet but this once. Peradventure ten shall be found there.' And He said: 'I will not destroy it for the ten's sake.' 33 And the LORD went His way, as soon as He had left off speaking to Abraham; and Abraham returned unto his place.

Since Sodom was larger city in the days of Avraham having a king and perhaps hundreds or thousands of men that Avraham bargains G-D down to a Minyan of Righteous Men. Avraham could not imagine that Lot’s Virgin Daughters were young and corrupted by the culture too.

19:1 And the two angels came to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom; and Lot saw them, and rose up to meet them; and he fell down on his face to the earth;

And Lot saw: From Abraham’s house he learned to look for wayfarers. — [from Tan. Buber, Vayera 15]

2 and he said: 'Behold now, my lords, turn aside, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your way.' And they said: 'Nay; but we will abide in the broad place all night.'

I do not know if this is a test for Lot or the original plan to just vaporize people that tried to start up with them.

3 And he urged them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.

And they turned in to him: They took a circuitous path toward his house. — [from Gen. Rabbah 50:4]

He did so from his heart.

4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both young and old, all the people from every quarter. 5 And they called unto Lot, and said unto him: 'Where are the men that came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.' 6 And Lot went out unto them to the door, and shut the door after him. 7 And he said: 'I pray you, my brethren, do not so wickedly. 8 Behold now, I have two daughters that have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes; only unto these men do nothing; forasmuch as they are come under the shadow of my roof.'

To this day it is an Arab custom to save guard ones guests.

9 And they said: 'Stand back.' And they said: 'This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs play the judge; now will we deal worse with thee, than with them.' And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and drew near to break the door.

But they said, “Back away.”: Heb. גֶּשׁ הָלְאָה, “Get yourself away over there”; i.e.,“Draw near to the sides and distance yourself from us.” And similarly every [instance of] הָלְאָה in Scripture is an expression of distancing, as in (Num. 17:2) “Scatter away (הָלְאָה)”; (I Sam. 20:22, 37) “Behold, the arrows are beyond you (וָהָלְאָה).” Thus, גֶּשׁ הָלְאָה, means “Back away,” in Old French: trete de nos, go away from us. This is a word of rebuke, as if to say. “We don’t care about you,” and similar to it is (Isa. 65:5) “Keep (קְרַב) to yourself; do not come near me”; and so (ibid. 49:20): “Move aside (גְּשָׁה) so that I may dwell,” meaning, “Draw aside for my sake so that I will dwell beside you.” [The Sodomites were saying as follows]: “You intercede for the wayfarers? How dare you?!” In response to what he said to them about his daughters, they said to him, “Go away,” a mild expression, but in response to what he said in defense of the wayfarers, they said, “This one has come to sojourn.” You are the only stranger among us, for you have come to sojourn here, “and he is judging,” [meaning] and you have become our chastiser!? The door: Heb. הַדֶּלֶת. The door, which swings to lock and to open.

10 But the men put forth their hand, and brought Lot into the house to them, and the door they shut.

One of the Angels had the task of healing Avraham and he returned heavenward. The next had the task to save Lot and the third had the task to destroy the five cities of the plains.

11 And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great; so that they wearied themselves to find the door.

The entrance: That is the space through which they enter and exit. With blindness: Heb. בַּסַּנְוֵרִים, a plague of blindness. — [from Pirkei d’Rabbi Eliezer, ch. 25] Both small and great: (Gen. Rabbah 50:8) The young ones started to sin first, as it is said (above verse 4): “both young and old”; therefore, the punishment began with them.

12 And the men said unto Lot: 'Have you here any besides? son-in-law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whomsoever you have in the city; bring them out of the place; 13 for we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxed great before the LORD; and the LORD hath sent us to destroy it.' 14 And Lot went out, and spoke unto his sons-in-law, who married his daughters, and said: 'Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy the city.' But he seemed unto his sons-in-law as one that jested.

They could have been saved but were so steeped in wickedness of the city that they could not see the truth or move a bit to humor him. Rabbi Yerachmiel Boyer Shlita taught me that Tamay Mittumtam (the eating of a Tamay animal like pork, squid, horse, monkey, etc. makes a person stupid). For when one is stooped so low in filth and squalor or among criminals for example he becomes used to it and cannot see that he is going down the wrong path.

15 And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying: 'Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters that are here; lest thou be swept away in the iniquity of the city.'

Move it and quick for we must destroy this place and bring you to safety first for the HASHEM has made a Gezaira on the cities.

16 But he lingered; and the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him. And they brought him forth, and set him without the city.

Those leaving a town or city often tend to take a good-bye look even in a planned move.

17 And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said: 'Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the Plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be swept away.' 18 And Lot said unto them: 'Oh, not so, my lord; 19 behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shown unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest the evil overtake me, and I die.

He did not know that he would be protected until reaching safety for although he grew up with Abram and his father did die on a Kiddush HASHEM (When Haran saw that Abram was not injured in furnace, he was willing to be thrown in and because of his weaker faith he was burned.)

20 Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one; oh, let me escape thither--is it not a little one?--and my soul shall live.'

Please = Na in Hebrew and the Gematria is 51. Abram was in his 48th year when the Tower of Bavel was. Sodom was destroyed in his 99th year or 52 years later and this town was only in the 51st year so its sins were less.

21 And he said unto him: 'See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow the city of which thou hast spoken. 22 Hasten thou, escape thither; for I cannot do anything till you come thither.'--Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.

This pray or plea saved Zoar as we see that the angel could not do anything until Lot was safe.

23 The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot came unto Zoar. 24 Then the LORD caused to rain upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven; 25 and He overthrow those cities, and all the Plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.

We don’t know what happened was it a volcanic outburst from the Golan? Stromboli super-volcano? Meteors? Or some other phenomena that destroyed the city? Miracles are those that occur precisely like the sudden powerful gust of wind that blew the Kassam from the Military Complex or Tel Aviv out to sea the last number of seconds of its flight.

26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

And his wife looked from behind him: from behind Lot. — [from Zohar, vol. 1, 108b] And she became a pillar of salt: She sinned with salt, and she was punished with salt. He said to her, “Give a little salt to these guests.” She replied, “Also this evil custom you wish to introduce into this place?” - [from Gen. Rabbah 50:4]

The second half of the Rashi makes sense with Mida Knegged Mida (measure for measure) but I thought that Lot’s wife was with him and Abram

27 And Abraham got up early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the LORD. 28 And he looked out toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the Plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the land went up as the smoke of a furnace. 29 And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the Plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when He overthrew the cities in which Lot dwelt.

It was not the merits of Lot that saved him but that of his father Haran and Avraham.

30 And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar; and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters. 31 And the first-born said unto the younger: 'Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth. 32 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.'

The world was not destroyed weren’t there people in Zoar? Weren’t there other cities that might have eligible bachelors? Rather their education in Sodom was wicked and perverted just as the Arabs today teach their children of a Mitzvah to destroy Israel and other Infidels from age two or three as the film that I brought down last week. So here too the perverse attitudes in the education of the girls led to this or Lot was an honorable man. But ply a man with enough drink like Noach or Yael with Sisra and the result is below.

33 And they made their father drink wine that night. And the first-born went in, and lay with her father; and he knew not when she lay down, nor when she arose. 34 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the first-born said unto the younger: 'Behold, I lay yesternight with my father. Let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.' 35 And they made their father drink wine that night also. And the younger arose, and lay with him; and he knew not when she lay down, nor when she arose.36 Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father. 37 And the first-born bore a son, and called his name Moab--the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day. 38 And the younger, she also bore a son, and called his name Ben-ammi--the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day.

Avraham did not learn from Egypt and history repeats the same patter which is no fear of G-D in this place then Sara is my sister.

20:1 And Abraham journeyed from thence toward the land of the South, and dwelt between Kadesh and Shur; and he sojourned in Gerar. 2 And Abraham said of Sarah his wife: 'She is my sister.' And Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah. 3But God came to Abimelech in a dream of the night, and said to him: 'Behold, thou shalt die, because of the woman whom thou hast taken; for she is a man's wife.' 4 Now Abimelech had not come near her; and he said: 'LORD, wilt Thou slay even a righteous nation? 5 Said he not himself unto me: She is my sister? and she, even she herself said: He is my brother. In the simplicity of my heart and the innocence of my hands have I done this.' 6 And God said unto him in the dream: 'Yea, I know that in the simplicity of thy heart thou hast done this, and I also withheld thee from sinning against Me. Therefore suffered I thee not to touch her. 7 Now therefore restore the man's wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live; and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine.'

It is only after he has a dream does he realize the man is a prophet.

8 And Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and told all these things in their ears; and the men were sore afraid. 9Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said unto him: 'What hast thou done unto us? and wherein have I sinned against thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done.' 10And Abimelech said unto Abraham: 'What did you see, that thou hast done this thing?' 11 And Abraham said: 'Because I thought: Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife's sake.

Egypt was the same then. But wait no fear of G-D is not only in Syria today both sides but in the US IRS and Justice Dept. and other places. The whole e-mail scandal and targeting of people are just the tip of the iceberg of godless people.

12 And moreover she is indeed my sister, the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and so she became my wife. 13 And it came to pass, when God caused me to wander from my father's house, that I said unto her: This is thy kindness which thou shalt show unto me; at every place whither we shall come, say of me: He is my brother.' 14 And Abimelech took sheep and oxen, and men-servants and women-servants, and gave them unto Abraham, and restored him Sarah his wife. 15 And Abimelech said: 'Behold, my land is before thee: dwell where it pleaseth thee.' 16 And unto Sarah he said: 'Behold, I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver; behold, it is for thee a covering of the eyes to all that are with thee; and before all men thou art righted.' 17 And Abraham prayed unto God; and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maid-servants; and they bore children. 18 For the LORD had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abraham's wife.

21:1 And the LORD remembered Sarah as He had said, and the LORD did unto Sarah as He had spoken. 2 And Sarah conceived, and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him. 3 And Abraham called the name of his son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bore to him, Isaac.

Ytzchak for Sarah had laughed and the Avraham was laughing and smiling from here.

4 And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him.

He followed the command perfectly.

5 And Abraham was a hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born unto him. 6 And Sarah said: 'God hath made laughter for me; every one that hears will laugh on account of me.'

Here is the root of the name Yitzchak.

7 And she said: 'Who would have said unto Abraham, that Sarah should give children suck? for I have borne him a son in his old age.'

This was a miracle above the Teva (nature) and made a big Kiddush HASHEM.

8 And the child grew, and was weaned. And Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned.

The Medrash says that on the day Yitzchak was weaned, Sarah gave suck to other children to prove that he was hers. Later as he grew he was the spitting image of Avraham that they got confused so Avraham prayed for sign of being elderly for up until then people looked young for their entire life. Basically the genes stayed and renewed themselves.

9 And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne unto Abraham, making sport.

Trying to set an idol before Yitzchak.

10 Wherefore she said unto Abraham: 'Cast out this bondwoman and her son; for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac.' 11 And the thing was very grievous in Abraham's sight on account of his son. 12 And God said unto Abraham: 'Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah says unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall seed be called to thee. 13 And also of the son of the bondwoman will I make a nation, because he is thy seed.'

And because he made the Bris at 13 he will live in Eretz Yisrael 1300 years with control of the Temple Mount (Har HaBeis or HaBeit). Daniel 12:12 Happy is he that waits, and comes to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days. Now between the common year 689 to 691 the Dome on the Rock was built. This leaves a maximum date of 5784-6 for the Beis HaMikdash to be restored. But the number 1325 also appears which is about now the Keitz is coming near.

14 And Abraham arose up early in the morning, and took bread and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away; and she departed, and strayed in the wilderness of Beer-sheba. 15 And the water in the bottle was spent, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs. 16 And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a bow-shot; for she said: 'Let me not look upon the death of the child.' And she sat over against him, and lifted up her voice, and wept. 17 And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her: 'What ails thee, Hagar? Fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is. 18 Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him fast by thy hand; for I will make him a great nation.' 19 And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink. 20And God was with the lad, and he grew; and he dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer. 21 And he dwelt in the wilderness of Paran; and his mother took him a wife out of the land of Egypt.

Neither Avraham nor his merits would let one of his children die in his lifetime.

22 And it came to pass at that time, that Abimelech and Phicol the captain of his host spoke unto Abraham, saying: 'God is with thee in all that thou do. 23 Now therefore swear unto me here by God that thou wilt not deal falsely with me, nor with my son, nor with my son's son; but according to the kindness that I have done unto thee, thou shalt do unto me, and to the land wherein thou hast sojourned.' 24 And Abraham said: 'I will swear.' 25 And Abraham reproved Abimelech because of the well of water, which Abimelech's servants had violently taken away. 26 And Abimelech said: 'I know not who hath done this thing; neither didst thou tell me, neither yet heard I of it, but to-day.' 27 And Abraham took sheep and oxen, and gave them unto Abimelech; and they two made a covenant. 28 And Abraham set seven ewe-lambs of the flock by themselves. 29 And Abimelech said unto Abraham: 'What mean these seven ewe-lambs which thou hast set by themselves?' 30 And he said: 'Verily, these seven ewe-lambs shalt thou take of my hand, that it may be a witness unto me, that I have dug this well.' 31 Wherefore that place was called Beer-Sheba; because there they swore both of them. 32 So they made a covenant at Beer-Sheba; and Abimelech rose up, and Phicol the captain of his host, and they returned into the land of the Philistines. 33 And Abraham planted a tamarisk-tree in Beer-Sheba, and called there on the name of the LORD, the Everlasting God. 34And Abraham sojourned in the land of the Philistines many days

The Goyim knew that Avraham was to inherit the land so from a position of power sued for peace while he was few.

22:1 And it came to pass after these things, that God did prove Abraham, and said unto him: 'Abraham'; and he said: 'Here am I.' 2 And He said: 'Take now thy son, (I have two sons) thine only son, (I have two sons that are only to their mothers) whom thou love, (I love them both) even Isaac, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt-offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.' 3 And Abraham rose early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he cleaved the wood for the burnt-offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.

And…arose early: He hastened to [perform] the commandment (Pes. 4a). And he saddled: He himself, and he did not command one of his servants, because love causes a disregard for the standard [of dignified conduct]. — [from Gen. Rabbah 55:8] His two young men: Ishmael and Eliezer, for a person of esteem is not permitted to go out on the road without two men, so that if one must ease himself and move to a distance, the second one will remain with him. — [from Pirkei d’Rabbi Eliezer, ch. 31; Gen. Rabbah ad loc., Tan. Balak 8] And he split: Heb. וַיְבַקַע. The Targum renders וְצַלַח, as in (II Sam. 19:18):“and they split (וְצָלְחוּ) the Jordan,” an expression of splitting, fendre in Old French.

4 On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off. 5 And Abraham said unto his young men: 'Abide ye here with the ass, and I and the lad will go yonder; and we will worship, and come back to you.'

Avraham and Yitzchak were able to see the clouds of THE THRONE over Har Moriah but not Eliezer or Yishmael. Since they were no better than a donkey in their view of the place of the Shechina, they were to stay with the donkey.

6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt-offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took in his hand the fire and the knife; and they went both of them together. 7 And Isaac spoke unto Abraham his father, and said: 'My father.' And he said: 'Here am I, my son.' And he said: 'Behold the fire and the wood; but where is the lamb for a burnt-offering?' 8 And Abraham said: 'God will provide Himself the lamb for a burnt-offering, my son.' So they went both of them together.

How many historic conversions from 3691 years ago do you know of. They did not chat so much but we have the conversation to show the faith of Yitzchak.

9 And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built the altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. 10 And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. 11 And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said: 'Abraham, Abraham.' And he said: 'Here am I.' 12 And he said: 'Lay not thy hand upon the lad, neither do thou anything unto him; for now I know that thou art a God-fearing man, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son, from Me.'

Avraham putting his life on the line was one thing but to put his son’s life on the line is a greater act of faith. For the son is the future of the father and the family.

13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in the thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt-offering in the stead of his son. 14 And Abraham called the name of that place Adonai-jireh; as it is said to this day: 'In the mount where the LORD is seen.' 15 And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham a second time out of heaven, 16 and said: 'By Myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son, 17 that in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the seashore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; 18 and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast hearkened to My voice.' 19 So Abraham returned unto his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beer-Sheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beer-Sheba.

The Pshat is that they returned home and nothing is meant of Sara dying. The Medrash says that Sara got worried and she travelled dowards Yerushalayim via Chevron and died there for she heard that Yitzchak went up on the Mizbayach.

20 And it came to pass after these things, that it was told Abraham, saying: 'Behold, Milcah, she also hath borne children unto thy brother Nahor: 21 Uz his first-born, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram; 22 and Chesed, and Hazo, and Pildash, and Jidlaph, and Bethuel.' 23 And Bethuel begot Rebekah; these eight did Milcah bear to Nahor, Abraham's brother. 24 And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, she also bore Tebah, and Gaham, and Tahash, and Maacah.

These last few Pasukim are only because of the birth of Rivka.

Modern Slaughter with an Ancient Knife by Rabbi Yerachmiel Tilles Shlita http://ascentofsafed.com/cgi-bin/ascent.cgi?Name=935-07

After the passing of the major Chasidic rebbe, R. Uri of Strelisk, known as "the Seraph" ["the fiery angel"), the leadership of his followers passed to his primary disciple, Rabbi Yehuda Zvi-Hirsch of Strettin. However, not all the Chasidim accepted his leadership whole-heartedly; some were still hesitant whether he was truly worthy to take the place of his predecessor.
On one of the new Rebbe’s journeys together with a group of the Chasidim, he directed them to proceed into the city of Pesht (today part of the Hungarian capital of Budapest). As they wheeled along the main street, they passed a butcher shop. The Rebbe told the driver to stop in front of it. Above the entrance hung a prominent sign: "Here one may buy kosher meat of the highest standard."
The Rebbe stared intently in the wide front window. Suspended there from a hook in the ceiling was a large piece of meat for sale that appeared fresh, juicy and tender.
The Rebbe turned to two of the Chasidim and asked them to go find out what was the name of the Shochet (kosher slaughterer) and where he lived. He added softly that today perhaps they will eat of this meat.
The Chasidim were not clear from his tone if he was asking or telling them. Their faces stretched in puzzlement upon hearing the out-of-character request of the Tzaddik. Well known was his dedication to personal spiritual advancement, and thus aversion to fancy foods and other worldly pleasures. Yet here he was seemingly intending to feast upon would probably be a delicious-looking piece of meat.
The pair assigned to the task were quick to clarify the identity of the shochet and his address. The Rebbe promptly announced that they would all go there together.
They found the house and knocked on the door. The Shochet's wife opened and welcomed them with a happy smile. Her appearance was of a fully modest Jewish woman, while her face radiated kindness. One of the Chasidim who had tracked down the address asked where her husband was and she answered that he was expected home soon.
When the Rebbe then asked if there was a possibility that he and a few of his Chassidim could sleep in their house that night, she quickly invited them to do so. "If so," said the Rebbe, "we all need to eat supper first. Can you provide us a meal with meat?"
"Of course," she responded. "With pleasure." And she began setting the table.
The Chasidim stared in amazement. Why was the Rebbe requesting to eat specifically meat? And in a house that he knew nothing about and from a slaughterer he was not acquainted with. It was beyond belief. Still, not one of them could gather up the nerve to ask their leader about his highly irregular request.
Not so long after, the door opened and in walked the shochet. Immediately the perplexity of the Chasidim accelerated. His thick overcoat, large fur hat and heavy boots were in the style of the Polish nobility. The garments under his coat were tailored to the current modern fashion, a manner completely unacceptable in G-d-fearing Jewish communities then, especially for a shochet. How could it be that the Rebbe would eat in the house of such a person, and trust his slaughtering and his kashrut observance? It was inconceivable.
The Rebbe and the shochet greeted each other pleasantly. Before sitting down for the meal, the Rebbe, who had worked in his younger years as a shochet, asked politely to examine the knife [i.e. the sharpness of its blade and its smoothness --yt] that was used to slaughter the meat which was being served.
To everyone's wide-eyed astonishment, the shochet refused to comply, even though this was a traditional and acceptable request for a very religious guest or customer to make. His expression turned severely serious as he said, "Please excuse me, your honor. I will not be at all offended if you or your students refuse to eat from our meat. But under no circumstances can I show you my knife!"
The Chasidim were aghast at the refusal to honor their Rebbe’s reasonable request. The Tzaddik, however, was not fazed. He requested of the shochet that the two of them step into a separate room. Once they were in privacy, he revealed his identity fully as Rabbi Yehuda Zvi-Hirsch, head of the rabbinical court of Strettin, and declared that with the supreme authority of the Torah he decrees upon the shochet to present to him his slaughtering knife.
The shochet turned pale, realizing that according to Jewish law he no longer had a choice. He quietly fetched the knife and put it in the Rebbe's palm, handle first. The Rebbe held it by the handle and examined its blade. He was deeply impressed; the edge of the blade was extremely sharp and completely smooth.
Then he noticed there were letters carved into the handle. He looked closer and was astonished to see the following extraordinary inscription:
"This is the knife of Avraham our forefather, peace unto him that we eat in his merit [the meat slaughtered with it]."
It took Rabbi Yehuda-Zvi a few moments to calm his emotions and regain his equilibrium. After another gaze at the inscription, he walked slowly out of the room. His host followed solemnly behind. The Rebbe sat down at the table and with a broad smile told his Chasidim they could join him to eat, including the meat. They greatly appreciated the meal, while their host, the shochet, relieved that the Rebbe had not mentioned the inscription, took particular pleasure from the Torah thoughts that the Rebbe shared.
Actually, not all of the Chasidim ate from the meat. The faith and trust of a few of them in the new Rebbe was not so complete as to alleviate their concerns about the kosherness of the food and their suspicions of the shochet. Each one surreptitiously pushed the meat on his plate onto the handkerchief he had placed on his lap, in order to throw it away outside after the meal at a quiet moment.
The next morning the group rose early, and after prayers and a small breakfast they departed. Only when they reached a good distance from the city did the Rebbe tell them about the startling inscription on the knife. The Chasidim all cried out in shock, some with joy that they had merited to eat from meat that had been slaughtered with the knife of Avraham Avinu (our father Abraham), the minority from sharp disappointment that they hadn't believed in the Rebbe enough to rely on his invitation.
Those latter Chasidim decided they would immediately return to Pesht and again request hospitality in the home of the shochet. Then they too would be able to eat of the meat slaughtered by his unique, holy knife.
When they arrived in Pesht, they set out in the direction of the slaughterer's house. But they weren't able to locate it. After fruitlessly wandering up and down the street and a few other adjoining ones, they started asking local people for help. But each one that spoke to said he was not acquainted with such a shochet, and insisted that there had never been such a butcher store in the city.
Realization dawned on them. The shochet must be one of the 36 hidden Tzaddikim, in whose merit the world continues to exist. That he had accepted them into his home and interacted with them could only be in honor of their Rebbe, R. Yehuda Zvi, the Tzaddik of Strettin. If only their faith had been greater, they too would have had the privilege of eating from the knife of our patriarch Avraham.

Biographical note:
Rabbi Yehuda Zvi-Hirsch Brandwein of Strettin [of blessed memory: 5540 - 11 Iyar 5604 (1780 - April 1844 C.E.)] was the leading disciple of Rabbi Uri of Strelisk, whom he succeeded in 1826, and whom he resembled in his ecstatic mode of prayer. He was highly praised by many of the tzadikim of his generation. His teachings may be found in Degel Machaneh Yehuda. He was succeeded by his son Rabbi Avraham Brandwein of Strettin.

From Dr. Rabbi Bernhard Rosenberg Shlita:

Legacy of the Mufti and Hitler: The facts that are known. By: David Bedein & Rabbi Dr.Bernhard Rosenberg

[Following the surprise that greeted the statement of the Prime Minister of Israel that the Mufti of Jerusalem inspired Hitler to initiate the “final solution” to murder the Jews of Europe, the time has come to clear the air and state the facts as we know them. The following article is excerpted from a paper that I delivered at an Israel Knesset Forum on Holocaust Remembrance Day, 2012]
The titular leader of the Palestinian Arab community in the previous generation: Haj Amin Al Husseini, the Mufti of Jerusalem, forged a pact with Adolf Hitler on November 28, 1941, one week before the Wannasee conference, originally scheduled for December 9, 1941, yet was postponed by one month, due to the attack on Pearl Harbor only two days before, and one day before Hitler declared war on the US, on December 10, 1941.
The protocols of the Hitler -Mufti pact were presented as evidence against the Mufti in the Nuremberg war crimes trials, explicitly state that Hitler would exterminate the Jews in Europe, while the Mufti would enlist Nazi aid to exterminate Jews in Palestine, so as to establish a “JudenRein” state of Palestine.
To that end, the Mufti ensconced himself in Hitler’s bunker, from where he recruited an Islamic unit of the Waffen SS, which actively engaged in the mass murder of Jews, while issuing Arabic language appeals on Nazi radio which incited Moslems to join the Nazi cause and to prepare for mass murder of Jews in Palestine.
The Protocols of the Nuremberg conviction of the Mufti were published in the 1946 book, MUFTI OF JERUSALEM, authored by Journalist Maurice Pearlman, who was appointed in 1948 as the first director of the Israel Government Press Office.
Pearlman cited affidavits of senior SS prosecution witnesses who testified that the Mufti, working directly under Eichmann and Himmler, identified the Mufti’s instrumental role in making sure that millions of Jews were murdered, and not ransomed.
No one denies the Mufti’s Arabic language radio broadcasts, his recruitment of the Islamic SS unit, and his active involvement in SS round ups of Jews in Yugosolvia.
And there is no doubt that Mufti was aware of the Final Solution, fully supported it, and sought to extend it to the Arab world
The affidavit of one of Eichmann’s subordinates, SS Hampsturmfuerer Dieter Wisliceny, who appeared as a witness for the Nuremberg prosecution, speaks for itself:
The Mufti was one of the initiators of the systematic extermination of European Jewry for the Germans and had been the permanent collaborator and advisor of Eichmann and Himmler in the execution of the plan…According to my opinion, the Grand Mufti, who had been in Berlin since 1941, played a role in the decision of the German government to exterminate the European Jews, the importance of which must not be disregarded, He had repeatedly suggested to the various authorities with who had been in contact, above all before Hitler, Ribbentrop and Himmler, the extermination of European Jewry. He considered this as a comfortable solution of the Palestinian problem. In his messages broadcast from Berlin, he surpassed us in anti-Jewish attacks. He was one of Eichmann’s best friends and had constantly incited him to accelerate the extermination measures…
In 1961, when Eichmann was brought to justice in Jerusalem, Israel’s then foreign minister,, Golda Meir, called for the Mossad to apprehend the Mufti and to sit him alongside Eichmann on trial in Jerusalem
Maurice Pearlman traces the Mufti’s escape to Cairo, where Pearlman reported how the Mufti influenced the newly formed Arab League to spawn the charter of the Arab League, with an explicit statement that its purpose was to wipe out any Zionist entity that would soon come about.
Indeed, the Mufti inspired charter of the Arab League would soon form the basis of the Arab league declaration of war to destroy the nascent state of Israel in 1948.
The refusal of the UK to arrest the Mufti in Cairo, described by Pearlman, caused the head of the Zionist revisionists in the United States at the time, Ben Zion Netanyahu, father of Israel’s current Prime Minister, to launch an unsuccessful campaign to push the US to demand the arrest of the Mufti in Cairo.
A little known fact concerns the Mufti’s special relationship with a young relative in Cairo, who to the Mufti would affectionately give the name “Yassir Arafat”. In December 1996, Haaretz interviewed Yassir Arafat’s younger brother and sister, who said that the Mufti performed the role of a surrogate father figure and mentor to the young Arafat.
The failure of the Arab League, in 1948, to mobilize the Arabs of Palestine into an active war against the newly formed Jewish state led the Mufti to urge the Arab League, in 1964, to launch the PLO, the Palestine Liberation Organization, whose stated covenant of purpose was almost identical in language to the charter of the Arab League: to exterminate new state of Israel. Yet the focus of the PLO was to organize Arabs who remained in Israel along with the Arab refugees who languished in UNRWA refugee camps to organize an effective grass roots effort to liberate Palestine, all of Palestine, from Jewish rule.
Today, the new curriculum of the Palestinian Authority is imbued with the legacy of the Mufti of Jerusalem, Haj Amin Al Husseini, whose vision of a Jew-free Palestine is taught in every educational institution of the Palestinian Authority, together with the armed struggle to liberate Palestine, as an ideal for Palestinian Arab students.
On January 4, 2013, Mahmoud Abbas, spoke glowingly of the legacy of the Godfather of the PLO, the Mufti of Jerusalem, via video link on a wide screen to the masses in Gaza, who gathered to celebrate the founding of Fatah (Arabic word for "conquest"), otherwise known as the Palestine Liberation Organization.
Abbas praised the Mufti as a man whose ways should be emulated by all Palestinian Arabs. "We must remember the pioneers, the Grand Mufti of Palestine, Hajj Muhammad Amin Al-Husseini, as well as Ahmad Al-Shukeiri, the founder of the PLO," Abbas said, according to a translation of the speech made by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI).

From Chaim S. In 2011 Watson, the IBM super computer best known for its run as a Jeopardy contestant, gained a new tool in its language arsenal: swearing.
Researchers in charge of expanding Watson’s vocabulary and ability to use language in a more nuanced and natural fashion thought it would be helpful to teach Watson slang and colloquial sayings. Essentially, they wanted to give Watson the ability to speak more like we speak to each other and less like a super computer carefully selecting an answer.
To this end the researchers unleashed Watson on Urban Dictionary, the massive 7-million-entry Internet dictionary of slang words and phrases. On one hand the experiment was a huge success, crunching through the Urban Dictionary database radically expanded Watson’s word selection and the nuance of its language use. On the other hand, Watson proved to be terrible at distinguishing when its language was and was not appropriate–shortly after it acquired its new vocabulary from Urban Dictionary it reportedly responded to a researcher’s inquiry by reporting it was “bullshit”.
In response to the changes in Watson’s vocabulary researchers terminated the Urban Dictionary experiment and set up filters to help Watson refrain from swearing in the future.
From Trojan Horse by Dr. Harry: Hardly two years ago, at the beginning of the ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and al-Shams), its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, declared loud and clear that if ISIS cannot defeat the West by military means, they will overrun it with jihadists.

This very ISIS band of jihadists subsequently rebranded itself as the Islamic State (IS) with its leader taking on the grand title of “caliph” (mimicking the practices of early years of Islamic “Golden Age”) to rule over the concocted Islamic caliphate of modern times!

Whatever grand title Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi may have choosen to award himself, his pronouncement to overrun the West, particularly Europe, with jihadists definitely has the ring of reality about it.

The present predicament indicates, without any shadow of doubt, that al-Baghdadi is on the ascent. The Islamic State may have occupied vast tracts of land in Iraq and Syria over the past 15 months or so, but that victory diminishes into insignificance in comparison to what he is up to now.

He has stretched his hand to grab the crown jewel of humanity: European civilisation. Along with the hundreds of thousands of migrants from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and other parts of the Islamic State caliphate that have landed on European shores are large number of Islamic State jihadis mingled among them -- with more millions are on the march, trekking across the continents of Africa and Asia, heading towards Europe.
