I am bringing the following to your attention. Two people on my Prayer list Rabbi Paley and the Paratroop Officer were injured on Pesach close to 7 full weeks of prayers for their recovery if you want to continue praying please go ahead but they are not in life threatening situations any more. Avraham Noach ben Yehudit, Nadav Chaim ben Iris Chaya

Reminder: Before
Shavuos make an Eruv Tavshillin. The Blessing is in the Siddur/Machzor usually
before Candle Lighting. The Eruv consists of bread and something like a tuna
can, hardboiled egg and put together in or outside the refrigerator and it
permits us to light Shabbos Candles and cook for Shabbos if necessary. We also
say for all the people of the city in case a neighbor forgets. Prior to Pesach
I mentioned all over the net but failed to mention in the Blogspot as in Israel
no Eruv was needed from Chol HaMoed to Shabbos.
Parsha Naso Part I
We ended our Parsha last
week with only the Levi work of Kohath being mentioned. Why not the other two
sections of the Tribe of Levi in the Parsha? Why must Naso be the longest
Parsha may they should have been included with Kohath?
I discussed this with my
son, Chaim, who remembered from the Art Scroll that the Ohr HaChaim HaKadosh
had discussed this question. According to him, Aaron HaCohain was from Kohath
and therefore they were included together.
Our Parsha continues
with the work of the Leviim deal with a Sotah, Nazir and the gifts of the
Princes.
4:21 And the LORD spoke unto Moses
saying: 22 'Take the sum of the sons of Gershon also, by their
fathers' houses, by their families; 23 from thirty years old and upward
until fifty years old shalt thou number them: all that enter in to wait upon
the service, to do service in the tent of meeting. 24 This is the service of the
families of the Gershonites, in serving and in bearing burdens: 25 they shall bear the curtains of
the tabernacle, and the tent of meeting, its covering, and the covering of
sealskin that is above upon it, and the screen for the door of the tent of
meeting; 26 and the hangings of the court, and the screen for the
door of the gate of the court, which is by the tabernacle and by the altar
round about, and their cords, and all the instruments of their service, and
whatsoever there may be to do with them, therein shall they serve. 27 At the commandment of Aaron and
his sons shall be all the service of the sons of the Gershonites, in all their
burden, and in all their service; and ye shall appoint unto them in charge all
their burden. 28 This is the service of the families of the sons of the
Gershonites in the tent of meeting; and their charge shall be under the hand of
Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.
Ithamar was in charge of the packing and reassembling
of the curtains.
29 As for the sons of Merari, thou
shalt number them by their families, by their fathers' houses; 30 from thirty years old and upward even unto
fifty years old shalt thou number them, every one that enters upon the service,
to do the work of the tent of meeting. 31 And this is the charge of their burden,
according to all their service in the tent of meeting: the boards of the
tabernacle, and the bars thereof, and the pillars thereof, and the sockets
thereof; 32 and the pillars of the court round about, and their
sockets, and their pins, and their cords, even all their appurtenance, and all
that pertains to their service; and by name ye shall appoint the instruments of
the charge of their burden. 33 This is the service of the families
of the sons of Merari, according to all their service, in the tent of meeting,
under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.'
Here too, Ithamar was in charge of the packing and
reassembling of the boards.
34 And Moses and Aaron and the
princes of the congregation numbered the sons of the Kohathites by their
families, and by their fathers' houses, 35 from thirty years old and upward
even unto fifty years old, every one that entered upon the service, for service
in the tent of meeting. 36 And those that were numbered of them by their families
were two thousand seven hundred and fifty. 37 These are they that were
numbered of the families of the Kohathites, of all that did serve in the tent
of meeting, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the commandment of the
LORD by the hand of Moses.
As mentioned a Levi
had to have a maximum strength and lifting capacity and stamina.
38 And those that were numbered of
the sons of Gershon, by their families, and by their fathers' houses, 39 from thirty years old and upward
even unto fifty years old, every one that entered upon the service, for service
in the tent of meeting, 40 even those that were numbered of them, by their
families, by their fathers' houses, were two thousand and six hundred and
thirty. 41 These are they that were numbered of the families of
the sons of Gershon, of all that did serve in the tent of meeting, whom Moses
and Aaron numbered according to the commandment of the LORD. 42 And those that were numbered of
the families of the sons of Merari, by their families, by their fathers'
houses, 43 from thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years
old, every one that entered upon the service, for service in the tent of
meeting, 44 even those that were numbered of them by their
families, were three thousand and two hundred.
Both Gerson and
Merari had similar numbers compared to Kohath but since Kohath was similar in population
to the others it is only the reason of touching and moving the holiest of items
that could give him Kares they were given a special blessing not to be cut off.
45 These are they that were
numbered of the families of the sons of Merari, whom Moses and Aaron numbered
according to the commandment of the LORD by the hand of Moses. 46 All those that were numbered of
the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron and the princes of Israel numbered, by their
families, and by their fathers' houses, 47 from thirty years old and upward
even unto fifty years old, every one that entered in to do the work of service,
and the work of bearing burdens in the tent of meeting, 48 even those that were numbered of
them, were eight thousand and five hundred and fourscore. 49 According to the commandment of
the LORD they were appointed by the hand of Moses, everyone to his service, and
to his burden; they were also numbered, as the LORD commanded Moses.
As I mentioned before each and every
righteous person is a treasure before HASHEM and that is why there is
numbering.
5:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses,
saying: 2 'Command the children of Israel, that they put out of the
camp every leper, and every one that hath an issue, and whosoever is unclean by
the dead; 3 both male and female shall ye put out, without the camp
shall ye put them; that they defile not their camp, in the midst whereof I
dwell.' 4 And the children of Israel did so, and put them out without
the camp; as the LORD spoke unto Moses, so did the children of Israel.
They have done nothing
back. They have lost a close relative or in-law. Since they have been in contact
with the dead, they have to be outside of the camp.
8 But if the man have no kinsman to whom
restitution may be made for the guilt, the restitution for guilt which is made
shall be the LORD'S, even the priest's; besides the ram of the atonement,
whereby atonement shall be made for him. 9 And every heave-offering
of all the holy things of the children of Israel, which they present unto the priest,
shall be his. 10 And every man's hallowed things shall be his:
whatsoever any man gives the priest, it shall be his.
The Cohain gets edible
parts from the Korbanos.
11 and the LORD spoke unto Moses,
saying: 12 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them: If
any man's wife go aside, and act unfaithfully against him,
It starts out innocently
enough. At first the man and woman talk to each other. It could be business
like she selling him a chicken or milk in the market a few times a week or in
the same car pool.
13 and a man lie with her carnally, and it
be hidden from the eyes of her husband, she being defiled secretly, and there
be no witness against her, neither she be taken in the act;
This is full adultery. In
the Pasuk before, I gave an example. Of course, there are loose men or women. I
have heard stories of women taking a bus to the end of the line and using the
driver to supply the needs they have as their husbands have had not communications
with them.
14 and the spirit of jealousy come upon him,
and he be jealous of his wife, and she be defiled; or if the spirit of jealousy
come upon him, and he be jealous of his wife, and she be not defiled;
The Torah is implying
that the woman was unfaithful either the husband heard or saw that every morning
she talks to this Don Juan fellow or starts secluding with him long enough for
a hug and kiss or longer.
15 then shall the man bring his wife unto
the priest, and shall bring her offering for her, the tenth part of an ephah of
barley meal; he shall pour no oil upon it, nor put frankincense thereon; for it
is a meal-offering of jealousy, a meal-offering of memorial, bringing iniquity
to remembrance. 16 And the priest shall bring her near, and set her
before the LORD.
At first, the Cohanim
scare her into confessing or refusing to drink.
17 And the priest shall take holy water in
an earthen vessel; and of the dust that is on the floor of the tabernacle the
priest shall take, and put it into the water. 18 And the priest shall
set the woman before the LORD, and let the hair of the woman's head go loose,
and put the meal-offering of memorial in her hands, which is the meal-offering
of jealousy; and the priest shall have in his hand the water of bitterness that
causes the curse. 19 And the priest shall cause her to swear, and
shall say unto the woman: 'If no man have lain with thee, and if thou hast not
gone aside to uncleanness, being under thy husband, be thou free from this
water of bitterness that causes the curse;
According to the Sages
even have a son born within the coming year.
20 but if thou hast gone aside, being under
thy husband, and if thou be defiled, and some man have lain with thee besides
thy husband-- 21 then the priest shall cause the woman to swear with
the oath of cursing, and the priest shall say unto the woman--the LORD make
thee a curse and an oath among thy people, when the LORD doth make thy thigh to
fall away, and thy belly to swell; 22 and this water that causes the
curse shall go into thy bowels, and make thy belly to swell, and thy thigh to
fall away'; and the woman shall say: 'Amen, Amen.'
At this stage in the process,
the woman can regret and receive a divorce. Some women were turned off by the
jealous husband some were scared by the Cohanim and their Beis Din. This was the
point of no return. Once a woman agrees to drink and says Amen V’ Amen the
script is written and erased by water. The ink did have traces of cyanide in
it. Still the story of the Chida I brought down years ago, he just read her the
Pasuk and as she left his house died on the street. According to the tradition
as she dies so dies the adulterer who did not have traces of cyanide in his
drink.
23 And the priest shall write these curses
in a scroll, and he shall blot them out into the water of
bitterness. 24 And he shall make the woman drink the water of
bitterness that causes the curse; and the water that causes the curse shall
enter into her and become bitter. 25 And the priest shall take the
meal-offering of jealousy out of the woman's hand, and shall wave the
meal-offering before the LORD, and bring it unto the altar. 26 And
the priest shall take a handful of the meal-offering, as the memorial-part
thereof, and make it smoke upon the altar, and afterward shall make the woman
drink the water. 27 And when he hath made her drink the water, then
it shall come to pass, if she be defiled, and have acted unfaithfully against
her husband, that the water that causes the curse shall enter into her and
become bitter, and her belly shall swell, and her thigh shall fall away; and
the woman shall be a curse among her people.
As the woman was tested,
she had her hair uncovered and was in front of the nation bare from the waist
upwards. This was done to disgrace her and discourage women watching not to
think of committing adultery.
28 And if the woman be not defiled, but be
clean; then she shall be cleared, and shall conceive seed. 29 This is
the law of jealousy, when a wife, being under her husband, goes aside, and is
defiled; 30 or when the spirit of jealousy comes upon a man, and he
be jealous over his wife; then shall he set the woman before the LORD, and the
priest shall execute upon her all this law. 31 And the man shall be
clear from iniquity, and that woman shall bear her iniquity.
Why is the husband
cleared for being jealous? He was cleared because she was talking with a rogue
Don Juan.
The following is a true
story: It once happened that a man built his house to live in and sublet
apartments. He had next to it another plot of land. Since he was working
certain hours, he put his wife in charge of the building to check on that the
Arab workers were not slacking on the job or sabotaging. The object was to have
more apartments to rent out. She spoke Arabic and one could see her sitting
down chatting with them on their break.
Time went by and the
wife ran off with one of the Arabs to Haifa where he lived.
6.1And the LORD spoke unto Moses,
saying: 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them: When
either man or woman shall clearly utter a vow, the vow of a Nazirite, to
consecrate himself unto the LORD, 3 he shall abstain from wine and
strong drink: he shall drink no vinegar of wine, or vinegar of strong drink,
neither shall he drink any liquor of grapes, nor eat fresh grapes or
dried.
The reason being next to
Sotah is that if one saw the woman who was suspected of adultery especially not
dressed from the waist upwards and not get bad thoughts he would remain sober
by not drinking wine.
4 All the days of his Naziriteship shall he
eat nothing that is made of the grape-vine, from the pressed grapes even to the
grapestone. 5 All the days of his vow of Naziriteship there shall no
razor come upon his head; until the days be fulfilled, in which he consecrated
himself unto the LORD, he shall be holy, he shall let the locks of the hair of
his head grow long.
The minimum amount of
time is 30 full days. Only from the 31st day could he bring his Korban.
6 All the days that he consecrated himself
unto the LORD he shall not come near to a dead body. 7 He shall not
make himself unclean for his father, or for his mother, for his brother, or for
his sister, when they die; because his consecration unto God is upon his
head. 8 All the days of his Naziriteship he is holy unto the
LORD.
The exception was a
Nazir for life like Shimshon but a temporary one was forbidden to be near a
dead body.
9 And if any man die very suddenly beside
him, and he defile his consecrated head, then he shall shave his head in the
day of his cleansing, on the seventh day shall he shave it. 10 And on
the eighth day he shall bring two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, to the
priest, to the door of the tent of meeting.
He was on the way with a
Jew who suddenly died and then this man became a Meys Mitzvah.
11 And the priest shall prepare one for a sin-offering,
and the other for a burnt-offering, and make atonement for him, for that he
sinned by reason of the dead; and he shall hallow his head that same
day. 12 And he shall consecrate unto the LORD the days of his
Naziriteship, and shall bring a he-lamb of the first year for a guilt-offering;
but the former days shall be void, because his consecration was defiled.
The man gets a Mitzvah
for burying the dead Israelite but has to start his Nazirship over again.
13 And this is the law of the Nazirite, when
the days of his consecration are fulfilled: he shall bring it unto the door of
the tent of meeting; 14 and he shall present his offering unto the
LORD, one he-lamb of the first year without blemish for a burnt-offering, and
one ewe-lamb of the first year without blemish for a sin-offering, and one ram
without blemish for peace-offerings, 15 and a basket of unleavened
bread, cakes of fine flour mingled with oil, and unleavened wafers spread with
oil, and their meal-offering, and their drink-offerings. 16 And the
priest shall bring them before the LORD, and shall offer his sin-offering, and
his burnt-offering. 17 And he shall offer the ram for a sacrifice of
peace-offerings unto the LORD, with the basket of unleavened bread; the priest
shall offer also the meal-offering thereof, and the drink-offering
thereof. 18 And the Nazirite shall shave his consecrated head at the
door of the tent of meeting, and shall take the hair of his consecrated head,
and put it on the fire which is under the sacrifice of
peace-offerings. 19 And the priest shall take the shoulder of the ram
when it is sodden, and one unleavened cake out of the basket, and one
unleavened wafer, and shall put them upon the hands of the Nazirite, after he
hath shaven his consecrated head. 20 And the priest shall wave them
for a wave-offering before the LORD; this is holy for the priest, together with
the breast of waving and the thigh of heaving; and after that the Nazirite may
drink wine. 21 This is the law of the Nazirite who vows, and of his
offering unto the LORD for his Naziriteship, beside that for which his means
suffice; according to his vow which he vows, so he must do after the law of his
Naziriteship.
To be a Nazir was not a
normal case and it was done sometimes for piety but many times for being sort
of holier than thou. Shimon HaTzadik, Cohain Gadol, and leader of the great
Sanhedrin only ate from one Korban of a Shepherd boy who became a Nazir for a pure
reason. Thus, the Sages frowned on those who became a Nazir and preferred one
to refrain from wine and strong drink without the Nazirship.
22 And
the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 23 'Speak unto Aaron and unto his
sons, saying: On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel; ye shall say
unto them: 24 The LORD bless thee, and keep thee; 25 The
LORD make His face to shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee; 26 The
LORD lift up His countenance upon thee, and give thee peace. 27 So
shall they put My name upon the children of Israel, and I will bless them.'
The Cohanic Blessing
said twice daily at the end of the Kiras Shema and once after the blessings of
Torah on Shabbos and Yom Tov also in the Musaf Prayer and Yom Kippur in the
Ne’ilah Prayer. To be continued.
Rabbis have no rest in this world and the Shabbos
Problem.
Oh-Ho and I thought I
was about to take a vacation. But despite medical insurance in the States and Israel,
my wife wanted me to have trip including flight insurance. That is when the
trouble started. It seems that before the pace-maker, the doctor wrote in my
file that I was forbidden to fly. So, the day before the flight via the secretary,
I had to barge my way into see the Cardiologist for a note saying something
like according to Peter Pan and Dumbo, Rachamim Pauli can fly.
Finally, the morning of
the flight I got insurance paying a bit more than my wife.
Because of the pacemaker,
I asked for a wheel chair. In Israel they identified my security threat risk
asked me questions about my pacemaker and let me through. In the US I asked for
a pat down and I was subject to one but the next TSA man asked if I was over 75
and just an explosive on hands test.
Last year’s trip
before Pesach had found a broken-down heater-air conditioner unit. So, when I
returned after a year, I expected a completely functioning unit. Unfortunately,
this was not the case. Water from the humidity in Florida had clogged up our
unit and again the a/c was not working but the technician came within a few
hours vacuumed out the water made sure it was draining and everything was back
on schedule or so I thought.
Then the refrigerator
made noises and did not produce ice cubes. After owning the apartment 13years I
had a choice of $150 technician call and a repair for a refrigeration in my
possession already 19years. I decided to get a new one. Then came a whole new
bunch of problems my fight with AI and then a slow thinker in India about
getting a technician as the new refrigerator did not really have a cold freezer
or making ice during the first 24hours.
There was an option to
return the refrigerator and replacement on the day I was leaving FL. In the
meantime, the ice machine started working and the ice cream re-solidified. So I
cancelled the replacement.
Everything was fine, I
had a way of turning off the interior light for Shabbos and was all into
enjoying a Shabbos rest with the new refrigerator. Ha-Ha the joke’s on me. In
Israel all the refrigerators come with a Shabbos mode. Not so in the States.
My wife open’s up the
refrigerator on Shabbos and after 2 seconds a little red light goes on saying
‘Door Open”. At a certain point the refrigerator will close by itself which is
my Koach’s Koach and I don’t do anything. [This is the general principle of disabled carts and
telephones-computers for doctors. The strength of one’s strength opens up the
circuit. The question is if the time-delay relay opening up the “Door Open” is
Koach of my Koach or not.] I have not called up the technologist in Israel yet
but I was sort of up the creek without a paddle and would need a Shabbos Clock
to work with to open and close the door in the future at certain times.
It was still Shabbos
and my food and drinks are in the refrigerator. What am I to do? Well there is
a book written by the late Rabbi Shlomo Goren about Shabbos for soldiers in the
field. It does not work on L’ Hachila (to start off situations with) but B’
De’eved (but in a temporary or field emergency). The principle of Melacha
and Kares or death by stoning is that one person does the whole Melacha or
completes the Melacha. (Tractate Shabbos starts the first Mishnah with the poor
man and the house owner where one does no Melacha and the other completes a
Melacha. What happens with the law of hunting on Shabbos or Yom Tov? A deer
enters one’s house. The man did nothing but when he came into the house he
blocks the escape of the deer. He can participate with a young man to stand
with each other or another by the open door and essentially capture the deer
even though the door is open.
Now what is Rabbi and
Rebbetzin Pauli going to do on Shabbos? The answer is less than a full Melacha.
As with the case of a deer, when Shabbos started the religious
soldiers with their mess-tin did not want to carry them on Shabbos. (The rifle
can be carried as a Suffix Pikuach Nefesh.) But who said a soldier eating is
Pikuach Nefesh? So, what is done? The soldier carries with another soldier the
mess tin. Therefore, on the count of three, the Paulis opened
up the door with each doing less than a Melacha. The door was then put in a
position where it closes itself automatically. As I wrote this was a surprise
‘emergency’ situation and not for a weekly basis or on my next planned solo
trip to the States. That would require a Shabbos clock with times to open the
door.
Shabbos afternoon I
posed a question to our Minyan. I got back a few answers like oops you should
have bought a Shabbos Refrigerator aka one with a Shabbos Mode. But then there
was Rabbi Mendel or Mendy Schwartz Shlita who uses a Shabbos clock. One man
suggested finding a spot for a magnet on the door.
But wait the AI-India
contacted a technician. Two days before flying out to see my son, I got a call.
Tomorrow the technician is coming. Since the Fridge was working except for
Shabbos Mode I did not need a Technician.
The next day, I get a
call your technician, Jesus, (he was Spanish Hez-zus) and a person with the
name of a murdered Rabbi of 2000 years ago by the Romans could he help on
Shabbos? Maybe a Tikkun for the followers who picked grain on Shabbos?
Well there was no
Shabbos Mode for my model. However, there was a technical solution to the
light. By taping a medium sized magnet on the freezer door just where the is a
light that says change water filter on the side, the ‘Door Open’ light is
neutralized.
I ended up my trip not
guarding my diet. I did not gain more than a few hundred grams but, with the
rich US prepared foods and my granddaughter’s birthday cake, I did not could not
would not lose.

When
asked by one Jerusalem rabbi, to which righteous graves does he recommend
going? For the IDF fallen soldiers in Mount Herzl.
Colonel
Avraham (my father) Lenir, the most senior Israeli pilot ever to fall captive,
returned to Israel with marks of severe torture on June 9, 1974. Electrocution,
dislocated fingernails and crushed bones. Apparently Nir knew critical secrets
to the security of the country of Iran & Israel. Iran under the Shah.
When
it became known about his fall into captivity, the top of the security
experienced it. There are claims that Israel agreed to even withdraw from the
Hermon Ridge in order to get the pilot commander back, as part of a prisoner
exchange deal that he will include without the Syrians realizing what treasure
fell into their hands. But they understood, and tortured him insanely. My
father, who knew that confinement of secrets would mean a dramatic damage to
@TAG's security, simply didn't talk.
How
do you know?
A
top official said if Lenir had spoken, israel would have felt the consequences
well and strongly.
Another
pilot who was chased, was probably the last to have a word with him through the
prison sections. Lenir told him that he was hurt in a very bad situation.
This
wonderful man, only 33 years old, died in the harshest and cruel way for the
sake of his nation. israel Alone, in the foreign hands of a terrible enemy.
Lieutenant
Colonel Avi Lenir is buried in Division 4 in Mount Herzl.
