Ki Teitzei
Our Parsha is the third
of four Parshiyos in the Drasha of Moshe Rabbaynu. It is consistent in that it
starts off with the concept of going off to war and ends with the war on Amalek
throughout all generations. This is tied in nicely with last week’s Parsha
about the Cohain that is anointed to lead people into battle. 20:4 for the LORD your God is He that goes with you, to
fight for you against your enemies, to save you.'
For HASHEM is with you to fight your battles. If you win it
is with HIS help and if you lose it is HIS will because you have done something
that has aggravated HIM.
21:10 When thou
go forth to battle against thine enemies, and the LORD thy God delivers them
into thy hands, and thou carry them away captive, 11 and see among the captives a woman of goodly form,
and thou hast a desire unto her, and would take her to thee to wife;
Did you ever notice that this Parsha occurs either in Elul or
near Elul when we are thinking of Teshuva before the Heavenly Judgement of Rosh
Hashanah? The Yetzer always appears in goodly form. A few years ago, a famous
Chazan was giving a singing concert in a certain town far away from home. A
rival Chazan hired a student escort to visit him and discuss his music. She
visited his hotel room and filmed herself with him after she seduced him. All
the more so a soldier in battle with a beautiful woman taking her. Although
there is no approval of the Torah of this act in the heat of the moment, the
Torah tries to make her ugly for him.
This was the convention of war of that day and there is a
story of Resh Lechish. Another story from the days of the Talmud is the story
of Martha the daughter of the Rosh Yeshiva Shmuel being captured and getting
her husband to convert and producing a brilliant son who was a Torah Scholar.
12 then thou shalt bring her home to thy house; and she
shall shave her head, and pare her nails; 13 and she shall put the raiment of her captivity from off her, and
shall remain in thy house, and bewail her father and her mother a full month;
and after that thou mayest go in unto her, and be her husband, and she shall be
thy wife.
You won the battle with the enemy lost the battle with the
Yetzer when you humbled her. Now you want her for your wife, let her sit in
mourning for her family and wait a full month. Maybe she will spite the man who
captured and humbled her and he will let her go or she will desire him and
become a real wife in every sense of the word.
14 And it shall be, if thou have no delight in her, then
thou shalt let her go whither she will; but thou shalt not sell her at all for
money, thou shalt not deal with her as a slave, because thou hast humbled
her.
If
the captor does not like living with the woman (maybe she had a wonderful body
and an empty skull, maybe she is a nag or always complaining or screaming) he
shall let her go free. Once free she can do what she wants or decide that being
a wife is not so bad.
15 If a man have two wives, the one beloved, and the
other hated, and they have borne him children, both the beloved and the hated;
and if the first-born son be hers that was hated;
Since this is in conjunction with the captured woman, perhaps
she was such a woman and after the initial fling does things to hate him or eventually
produce a rebellious son.
16 then it shall be, in the day that he causes his sons
to inherit that which he hath, that he may not make the son of the beloved the
first-born before the son of the hated, who is the first-born; 17 but he shall acknowledge the first-born, the son of
the hated, by giving him a double portion of all that he hath; for he is the
first-fruits of his strength, the right of the first-born is his.
Nowadays, there is a high divorce rate. It is possible that
the first born comes from the first wife whom he put away whither he hated her
or parted amicably. The second or maybe third wife he fared better and he loves
her. However, since the son of his first wife is the original Bechor; he gets
the double portion. Both Rabbi Davis, Rabbi who retired from Young Israel of
Fort Lauderdale still on a FL Beit Din, and I have included daughter(s) in our
will; the contract had to be approved by a Beit Din. Still if there were two
women involved, the Bechor would come from the first wife.
18 If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, that
will not hearken to the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and
though they chasten him, will not hearken unto them; 19 then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him,
and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his
place; 20 and they shall say unto
the elders of his city: 'This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he doth not
hearken to our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard.'
Every parent wants their children to be better than them. But
sometimes there is a child who is the black sheep of the family. However, if at
the age of 13 to 13.5 years old he is a thief and a drunkard, we are afraid
that he might grow up to become a mafia character and we take him to the Beit
Din. Today there was in the news (see below) a ‘hill-top’ youth that regretted
his actions and was sent into a group to bring him up to army discipline
behavior.
21 And all the men of his city shall stone him with
stones, that he die; so shalt thou put away the evil from the midst of thee;
and all Israel shall hear, and fear.
The rebellious son is so bad that he is a danger to society
and is put to death before he can endanger society like we see with the protection
racket and the various murderous in the Arab sector.
22 And if a man have committed a sin worthy of death,
and he be put to death, and thou hang him on a tree; 23 his body shall not remain all night upon the tree,
but thou shalt surely bury him the same day; for he that is hanged is a
reproach unto God; that thou defile not thy land which the LORD thy God giveth
thee for an inheritance.
The man shall be hung to warn others not to act wickedly but
is buried for man was created in the image of G-D and desecration of the dead
is like the desecration of G-D.
22:1 Thou shalt not see thy brother's ox or his sheep driven away,
and hide thyself from them; thou shalt surely bring them back unto thy
brother. 2 And if thy brother be not nigh unto thee, and thou know
him not, then thou shalt bring it home to thy house, and it shall be with thee
until thy brother require it, and thou shalt restore it to him. 3 And
so shalt thou do with his ass; and so shalt thou do with his garment; and so
shalt thou do with every lost thing of thy brother's, which he hath lost, and
thou hast found; thou mayest not hide thyself.
This is with a neighbor or acquaintance but if an enemy all
the more so.
4 Thou
shalt not see thy brother's ass or his ox fallen down by the way, and hide
thyself from them; thou shalt surely help him to lift them up again. 5 A
woman shall not wear that which pertains unto a man, neither shall a man put on
a woman's garment; for whosoever does these things is an abomination unto the
LORD thy God.
Homosexuality is an abomination before G-D cross dressing too
and transgender nonsense is even a more disgusting abomination.
6 If
a bird's nest chance to be before thee in the way, in any tree or on the
ground, with young ones or eggs, and the dam sitting upon the young, or upon
the eggs, thou shalt not take the dam with the young; 7 thou shalt in
any wise let the dam go, but the young thou mayest take unto thyself; that it
may be well with thee, and that thou mayest prolong thy days.
The Talmud says that this is the lesser of all the Mitzvos.
The showing Chesed to the Dam when taking the young birds either for food or
cultivating for more and food is permissible. This little Mitzvah will lengthen
your days. If not in this world then in the next world.

for more comments next week but right now closing the Drasha as I fast forward
towards the end of our Parsha.]
…25:11 When
men strive together one with another, and the wife of the one draws near to
deliver her husband out of the hand of him that smites him, and puts forth her
hand, and taketh him by the secrets; 12 then thou shalt cut off her
hand, thine eye shall have no pity.
It is natural for a woman to jump, kick, hit, or take
something to defend her husband. However, that is not our case here the woman
grabs on to the man’s private part. This is not the way of a modest Jewish
woman. If she kicked him there it would be in the realm of normal but what is
she doing with her hands there! She obviously is an immodest woman and deserves
a fine. Currently, we do not wear the same clothing and usual wear underwear so
this would not occur. Still a black shadow is cast on the morals of this woman.
13 Thou
shalt not have in thy bag diverse weights, a great and a
small. 14 Thou shalt not have in thy house diverse measures, a great
and a small. 15 A perfect and just weight shalt thou have; a perfect
and just measure shalt thou have; that thy days may be long upon the land which
the LORD thy God giveth thee.
It is a Mitzvah to have standard weights and measures. We
already had the sentence “Ephod Tzedek, Hin Tzedek” when we regard weights and
measures.
16 For
all that do such things, even all that do unrighteously, are an abomination
unto the LORD thy God. 17 Remember what Amalek did unto thee by the
way as ye came forth out of Egypt; 18 how he met thee by the way, and
smote the hindmost of thee, all that were enfeebled in thy rear, when thou were
faint and weary; and he feared not God. 19 Therefore it shall be,
when the LORD thy God hath given you rest from all thine enemies round about,
in the land which the LORD thy God gives thee for an inheritance to possess it,
that thou shalt blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven; thou
shalt not forget.
Amalek attacked the
people of G-D right after leaving Egypt and they are the first of the
antisemites and therefore they must be fought.

Miracles by Rabbi Yerachmiel Tilles

My saintly maternal
grandmother - the Rebbetzin Rivka, wife of the Rebbe Maharash, told us
that a certain aguna (a woman abandoned by her husband) once
came to her father-in-law, the saintly Rebbe (the Tzemach Tzedek).
She brought along her son, who was a lad of eleven or twelve. The boy was
totally mute, and also hard of hearing.
This was during the
time when agunot were only permitted to enter the antechamber,
while the door (to the Rebbe's room) remained open. The Rebbe would sit there
and listen to each one's petition and history. Then, he would reply to the
attendant, Reb Chaim-Dov,[1] "Tell her to travel to such and such a
place" or "tell her to consult Rabbi so-and-so," etc.
This aguna would
come to the Rebbe several times a week, bringing her son. At the same time, she
would bring food.[2] Several weeks passed, but so many people had come
that her turn to enter had not yet arrived.
Once, she placed her
son under the table in the room where the Rebbe received people for yechidus,
(private audience), cautioning him that when the Rebbe began to receive people,
he should rise from his hiding place and hand the Rebbe her petition. The lad
followed his mother's instructions, and sat under the table, hidden by the
tablecloth and unseen by anyone.
The procedure was
that the attendant would stand near the table, while the other attendant- Reb
Elia-Leib[3]- would assign the order in which the chassidim were to enter.
Suddenly, the lad emerged from his hiding place. Reb Chaim-Dov became very
angry and shouted, "Sheigetz!"
To this, the Rebbe
remarked, "Simple faith lights up the eyes; greatness is given to certain
individuals only for the good of the Jewish people.[4]"
He then turned to
the lad and uttered the following holy words: "Go and tell your mother
that your father is still alive. She should travel to Denenburg."
"This agunah had
been sitting in my home and weeping about her misfortune. Her husband had been
missing for seven years. Now, several rabbis had given her permission to
remarry, but only on condition that the Rebbe agreed.[5]
"Suddenly, her
son entered and cried out in a loud voice, 'The Rebbe told me to tell Mother
that Father is alive, and that she should travel to Denenburg.' At this,
the agunah fainted.
"This double
miracle -- the prophetic information about the husband's whereabouts, and the
mute boy's suddenly regaining his speech -- caused a great commotion. At this,
my mother-in-law, Rebbetzin Chaya-Mushka (wife of the Tzemach Tzedek),
remarked:
"'Just look at
what everyone's gotten so excited about! At my father's (the second Rebbe of
Lubavitch) and my grandfather's (the first Rebbe of Lubavitch) court, miracles
lay scattered about, and no one bothered to pick them up. Just look at what is
happening, and what's caused so much excitement! Grandfather said that he would
prefer it if people understood Chassidut. As for getting excited about
miracles, we leave that for the Polisher and Hungarian [6] chasidim!
Translator's note: I
heard an addendum to this story, told by elder chassidim. The Tzemach Tzedek
used to admonish his sons when they sent people to him for a miracle, for he
claimed that he was not a Vohlynian Rebbe who performed miracles. When they
reminded him of our present story, he denied that any miracle was involved.
Rabbanin and other communal officials of many different cities would visit him
regularly for yechidus, and they would tell him of the recent doings in their
hometown, and so, when he read the aguna's description of her missing husband,
he realized that it was a man whom a recent visitor from Denenburg had
described. His son, the future Rebbe Maharash, then reminded him of the mute
boy who suddenly regained his speech. To this, the Tzemach Tzedek replied,
"I had no idea that the boy was unable to speak!" In other words, the
miracle had not been deliberate, for he had been unaware that one was even
needed. But, the moment the Rebbe uttered the words, "Go and tell your
mother…" that the boy automatically regained his speech.

Biographical notes:
Rabbi Menachem-Mendel Schneersohn, the 3rd Lubavitcher Rebbe [29 Elul 5549 - 13
Nissan 5626 (Sept. 1789 - April 1866)], the third Rebbe of Chabad, was known as
the Tzemach Tzedek, after his books of Jewish Law responsa and
Talmudic commentary called by that name. He was renowned not only as the Rebbe
of tens of thousands of Chasidim, but also as a leading scholar in his
generation in both the revealed and secret aspects of Torah.
Rebbetzin Rivka
Schneerson (1833- 10 Shvat 1914) a maternal granddaughter of Rabbi Dov Ber,
the 2nd Rebbe of Chabad-Lubavitch, at age 16 married her first cousin, Rabbi
Shmuel, who later became the fourth Lubavitcher Rebbe. Surviving her husband by
33 years, for many years she was the esteemed matriarch of Lubavitch, and Chasidim
frequented her home to listen to her accounts of the early years of Lubavitch.
She is the source of many of the stories recorded in the talks, letters and
memoirs of her grandson, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak (the sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe).
Today's Beis Rivka network of girls' schools, founded by Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak
in the 1940's, are named after her.

[1]Reb Chaim Dov served as the Tzemach Tzedek's gabbai-attendant
for 36 years. He was famous for keeping absolutely secret anything he happened
to overhear.

[4]I.e. all this ceremony at the Rebbe's court resulted from the Tzemach

Dorothy Thomson was
the first journalist that Hitler expelled in the lead up before the war, and
she used her voice to advocate for the Jewish People.
In 1931, Dorothy Thompson, an American journalist stationed in
Europe, was writing a
profile piece on a new leader emerging in Germany: Adolf
Hitler. This was two years before he was to be elected chancellor of Germany,
become a dictator, start World War II and eventually murder 6 million Jews in
the Holocaust.
When Thompson first met Hitler to write the profile, she said
she “was convinced that I was meeting the future dictator of Germany.” But
after less than a minute of talking to Hitler – the man who failed to rise to
power during the Beer Hall Putsch and then wrote the hateful “Mein Kampf” in prison – she determined that he
was a nobody.
“It took just about that time to
measure the startling insignificance of this man who has set the world agog,”
she wrote.
During the interview, Hitler admitted that if he did
come to power, he would establish an authority-state: “Everywhere there will be
responsibility and authority above, discipline and obedience below,” he said.
The profile piece turned into a hit piece; Thompson,
a former women’s rights activist with the suffrage movement, said this
“magnificent propagandist” was “inconsequent and voluble, ill-poised, insecure.
He is the very prototype of the Little Man.”
Thompson’s profile, titled “I Saw Hitler!” appeared in
a 1932 issue of Cosmopolitan and then was reprinted into a book of the same
title.
Several months after the article was published,
Hitler came to power. Realizing that she had woefully underestimated this evil
man, Thompson wrote a number of negative articles about him, which caught his
eye – and ultimately losing her position as a foreign correspondent.
In 1934, the secret police visited Thompson in her
hotel room, and she was given an order to leave Germany within 48 hours. She
was the first foreign journalist expelled from the country, and she landed on
the front page of papers around the globe.
“As far as I can see, I was really put out of Germany
for the crime of blasphemy,” she said. “My offense was to think that Hitler is
just an ordinary man, after all. That is a crime in the reigning cult in
Germany, which says Mr. Hitler is a messiah sent of God to save the German
people.”
Though Thompson had to leave Germany, due to her
expulsion, her career skyrocketed. She started writing a column for the New York Herald Tribune that was
syndicated to more than 100 different newspapers, and she was a guest on NBC
radio and wrote a regular column for Ladies’
Home Journal. In her writing and radio work, Thompson constantly criticized
Hitler and the Nazis and advocated for the Jewish people to establish their own
state.
In 1938, the journalist released a book called
“Refugees: Anarchy or Organization?” where she fought on behalf of refugees
from both the Spanish Civil War and Germany, saying, they “could bring to a new
country resources of skill which would increase its wealth and trade.”
When Herschel Grynszpan, a Jewish German student,
killed a German diplomat – which led to Kristallnacht – Thompson broadcasted,
“I want to talk about that boy. I feel as though I knew him, for in the past
five years I have met so many whose story is the same — the same except for
this unique desperate act. Herschel Grynzspan was one of the hundreds of
thousands of refugees whom the terror east of the Rhine has turned loose in the
world.”
Americans heard Thompson’s broadcast and raised
$40,000 for Grynszpan’s legal defense. Unfortunately, the trial never ended up
being held. The Gestapo seized him and he was presumed to have been killed;
what really happened still remains a mystery.
The next year, when Nazi sympathizers hosted a rally
at Madison Square Garden in 1939, Thompson disrupted it by laughing during the
speeches, and the police had to remove her for her own safety.
She repeatedly brought up the horrific atrocities
Nazis were inflicting onto the Jews and urged the American government to take
action.
In a broadcast, she stated, “They are holding every
Jew in Germany as a hostage. Therefore, we who are not Jews must speak, speak
our sorrow and indignation and disgust in so many voices that they will be
heard.”
Thompson was not afraid to speak out against Hitler
in a time when others were. She was dubbed
the “First Lady of American Journalism” and became almost as
influential as First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. One biographer wrote that Thompson
became “the leading American voice in the war against fascism.”
Though the journalist quickly rose to fame, after the
war, she did not retain her celebrity status. She also had opinions that landed
her in hot water with her publishers and she changed her views on Zionism.
However, her influence cannot be understated. She
risked her own safety to stand up to pure evil – and will forever be remembered
for her bravery.
As Thompson herself wrote, “There is nothing to fear
except the persistent refusal to find out the truth.”
