Parsha Vayehi
A reminder almost every time we see Vayehi something bad is
supposed to happen. Vayehi after these things … Akedah of Yitzchak, Vayehi in
the days … and Haman HaRasha wanted to exterminate us, Vayehi in the days that
the Judges Judged and there was a famine in Israel and in our Parsha where the
flame of Yacov and the Patriarchs is about to become history. Yacov is now in
Egypt 17years. In Gematria Tov is 17 or Tet 9, Vav 6 and Bet 2. These were the
best years of Yacov’s life, retired and living like a king with grandchildren
and great grandchildren.
I LEARNED IN MY YEARS IN ENGINEERING IF YOU CAN’T DO SOMETHING
RIGHT DON’T DO IT. NEXT WILL THE TORAH WILL REMAIN JUST AS INTERESTING AS THIS
WEEK AND ALSO SHEMOS. NEXT WEEK I AM ON VACATION SO HOPEFULLY IT WILL BE OUT
EARLY.
He would have lived to 120years had
he pushed off “our father your servant” but instead he quietly accepted that.

Reserve Officer Tamar
ben Asher’s Nes
Nes in Hebrew means miracle.
Tamar was in Gaza. Suddenly, he was hit by a half inch bullet. It appears from
the injury to have been an outlawed since World War I dum-dum bullet as he was
hit in the stomach and it ripped into most of his abdominal organs.
He was down and his men had
brought him to the doctor. He was suffering badly and the stomach wound
affected his diaphragm and it was hard for him to breathe. Before being
helicoptered out, he said to the Doctor. “I am a man with a wife and three
children as the 49 year old passed out. You have to save me.”
When he awoke he learned of
damage to his liver, spleen, blatter and more. In short he was a walking
miracle. He underwent operations and rehabilitation for a long time.
Romance & Tragedy
Nahal Officer Zvi Peleg was
engaged to E6 Sgt. Rotem. Zvi’s best friend and army buddy E5 or E6 was serving
with him. He was also engaged to be married in a few months. They were
stationed in Arabbenaramsha Base.
Hezballah had mapped out the town
and base. They sent two rockets into the mess hall wounding 18 soldiers. Zvi
and buddy were given the task of rescuing the injured. In the middle of the
rescue, a drone targeted them. Buddy was killed out-right on the spot. On the
other side of the room, Zvi was hit with shrapnel. He was in horrible shape.
He was stabilized and with a
feeding tube in an induced coma. Rotem was at his side when he awoke. It was
hard for him to talk at first. Operations and recovery over time. He had lost
part of his right toes. Rotem said, “We are getting married, if I have to bring
the Rabbi to the hospital bed.”
Fortunately, that was not
necessary. Zvi started recovering but had to learn how to walk without pressure
on his right foot too much. Rotem insisted at the wedding that he break the cup
by using his right foot. The doctor said if he used his heel and not the toe.
That is what he did.
The parents of his dead best
buddy was there and they treat him as an adopted son even though he has
biological parents. Their reaction and attendance at his wedding was even a
bigger ‘tear-jerker’ than him walking with Rotem down the aisle after the
Wedding Chupa.
Nazi executioner meets his Jewish Grandchildren
By Rabbi Yerachmiel Tilles
https://ascentofsafed.com/Stories/Stories/5785/1413-15.html
On a trip to
Israel, Rabbi Berel Wein attended morning services in a synagogue in
Jerusalem. He relates that, unlike his own synagogue, which has benches facing
the front of the synagogue, this synagogue had tables and benches, so he was
forced to look at those praying opposite him. A tall, blue-eyed, blond-haired
man and three blond small boys walked in and sat down opposite him. Rabbi Wein
is used to the racial diversity of the citizens in Israel so little surprises
him, but this was different; this particular family was definitely Aryan.
More noteworthy than
their racial features was the seriousness and intensity of their praying. The
children were especially well-behaved and followed the service dutifully
without once wavering in their concentration. For Rabbi Wein, accustomed to the
more freewheeling American child, it was an unusual experience.
Afterward, the rabbi
remarked to a friend that they looked like fine people. His friend said that
the man was a microbiologist at Hebrew University who happened to have an
extraordinary story to tell. "Would you like to hear it?" he asked,
and without waiting for an answer, called to his fellow congregant,
"Avraham, this is Rabbi Berel Wein. I'm sure he would like to hear your
story."
The two shook hands
and agreed to walk home together. As they went, the rabbi listened to him tell
the following story:
"I was born and
brought up in Germany. My father was an officer in the SS killing squad,
the Einsatzgruppe. He served throughout the war and after it was
over successfully eluded apprehension. But his crimes were so heinous that
years later the West German Republic continued to pursue him. Finally, he was
caught and imprisoned for ten years. Later, because he was so old, they reduced
his sentence and let him out after four and a half years.
"My father
never talked about his past. It was only when he was caught that I learned
about his crimes in the newspaper. It was a bewildering experience to find out
that my father led such a monstrous life.
"The family was
shaken by the news. I was a teenager and became very confused by all the
notoriety. When we went to visit him in prison I couldn't go in to see him. I
felt as if he betrayed me. However, one useful thing came out of this -- I
developed an interest in the War and found out as much as I could about the
Einsatzgruppe and its role in the Holocaust.
"All this
occurred around that time the Eichmann trial was taking place, and Holocaust
material began to be published. I read all I could find and was able to get a
general picture of what happened to the Jews. What I found out horrified me and
the thought that my father took a role -- a leading role in the slaughter --
made me feel that perhaps our family was tainted with evil. If the conditions
were the same, I asked myself, could I too become a killer?
"I took a trip,
getting as far away from Germany as possible. It was as if I was haunted by
Germany and all things German... On the way, I decided to visit Israel to get
some perspective on the victims of the Nazis and find out what was so special
about this nation that so consumed Hitler. I needed to come to terms with what
was churning inside of me, and I toured the country, working periodically here
and there on agricultural settlements.
"While in a
kibbutz, I saw a poster advertising a summer's program at Hebrew University in
desert zoology, and I enrolled. I did very well and in the fall was able to
register for a graduate program at the university. While I was engaged in
graduate work, I also became interested in Judaism.
"I loved Israel
so much I just stayed on and applied for citizenship. Also, after about two
years of learning about Judaism I decided to study to become a Jew. A few years
later I earned my Ph.D. in microbiology and became a Jew. I married and settled
in Jerusalem. My wife was a German Lutheran, but she, too, converted. A
psychologist might interpret my conversion as sublimating my guilty feelings,
but I prefer to think about it as fulfilling my Jewish destiny. Don't ask me
how or why, but here we are -- an observant Jewish family. And we are very
happy living as Jews.
"About a year
ago we learned that my father was not feeling well. My wife thought it would be
a mitzvah to visit him and show him his grandchildren. At
first I was apprehensive about going back to Germany, a country I now feared.
But in the end, I took a sabbatical and we went back to Darmstadt to visit with
my father.
"It was quite a
scene. My boys wore their yarmulkes ('skull cap'), and had their tzitzis (fringes)
showing. Their peyos (side locks) were tucked back behind
their ears and, of course, they spoke Hebrew.
"When he first
saw us, my father was overwhelmed, and initially, couldn't bring himself to
embrace anyone. Later we got to talk and he seemed to be pleased by the way
things were turning out for us.
"My father is
very old now, over ninety, and I wanted to know what he did to merit such a
long life with such grandchildren, so I asked him point blank what he had done
to earn his good fortune.
"I explained to
him that we Jews believe that there are consequences to what we do, and the reward
system in life is measured very carefully. He looked at me and pondered the
question.
"He answered,
'I can't think of anything outstanding, but once, in Frankfurt,' he said, 'when
we were rounding up the Jews, I had the chance to save the life of three Jewish
boys who were hiding in a Catholic orphanage. For some reason they aroused my
sympathy. I was touched by their plight; they were so lost and forlorn I felt
pity for them, so I let them flee. I don't know what happened to them. But I
didn't kill them.'
"I thought his
answer over and told him that according to our tradition his answer made sense.
'You know, papa, if you had let four boys go, you would have had four
grandchildren.'"

Binyomin Adler for <ShabbosTaamHachaim@ gmail.com>.
Why this week? This
Friday is the "Fast of the Tenth of 10 Tevet." It commemorates the
onset of the siege outside the walls of Jerusalem that led to the destruction
of the Holy Temple on the Ninth of Av. In addition, in our times it has become
the date to say Kaddish for those martyrs of the Holocaust
(and all the others through the centuries) whose date of death is unknown.
Sad and lost: *Far from the
maddening crowds but even further from Judaism a lost Jewish Soul cries out.
The solution is obvious to me but the disease is so bad that first the person
has to move to a Jewish Area.
I don’t know where else to post
this. I got married back in I moved in with my now husband back in January. We
got married in July. In the town I moved to there is no Jewish community. It explicative
if I’m being honest. The closest reform synagogue is an hour and a half away. I
don’t know what to do, I’m happy in my marriage but need my community. my husband
is not Jewish but is supportive and loving. I just don’t want to be in this
town anymore.
In1942,
at the 14th Academy Awards, Gary Cooper was awarded Best Actor for his role in
"Sergeant York" (1941).
Alvin
C. York had been approached by producer Jesse L. Lasky several times, beginning
in 1919, to allow a movie to be made of his life, but had refused, believing
that "this uniform ain't for sale." Lasky convinced York that, with
war threatening in Europe, it was his patriotic duty to allow the film to
proceed. York finally agreed, but only on three conditions. First, York's share
of the profits would be contributed to a bible school York wanted to be built.
Second, no cigarette-smoking actress could be chosen to play his wife. Third,
only Gary Cooper could recreate his life on screen. Cooper at first turned down
the role, but when York himself contacted the star with a personal plea, Cooper
agreed to do the picture. Strangely York did not mind the fact that Cooper was
a chain smoker.
Cooper,
unable to participate in WWII due to his age and an old injury to his hip, felt
strongly that this film was his way of contributing to the cause. He later
said, "Sergeant Alvin C. York and I had quite a few things in common, even
before I played him on screen. We both were raised in the mountains--Tennessee
for him, Montana for me--and learned to ride and shoot as a natural part of
growing up. 'Sergeant York' won me an Academy Award, but that's not why it's my
favorite film. I liked the role because of the background of the picture, and
because I was portraying a good, sound American character."
York
himself was on the set for a few days during filming. When one of the crew
members tactlessly asked him how many "Jerries" he had killed, York
started sobbing so vehemently he threw up. The crew member was nearly fired,
but the next day, York demanded that he keep his job.
Cooper's
acceptance speech typified so many of the actor's performances when he said,
"It was Sergeant Alvin C. York who won this award; Shucks, I've been in
this business 16 years and sometimes dreamed I might get one of these things.
That's all I can say! Funny, when I was dreaming, I always made a good
speech." As he left the stage, he forgot the Oscar on the podium.
On the other side of milestones
there many individuals who never make the news. Almost every week I see a sign
that somebody is in mourning. The 10th of Tevet may be a fast day of
the breach in the walls of Yerushalayim but for my wife it is the Yahrzeit of
her mother. This week my wife lost two former colleagues from the faculty of
the Tel Aviv U. School of Medicine. One was Eva, 93, who like my wife taught
laboratory courses to Medical Students. Another was a Professor, 103, who must
have had a premonition that he would die soon. He never requested such a thing.
Not at the age 90 or at the age of 100. Two days before he died, he called up a
different professor to give a eulogy for him at his burial.
As far as miraculous recovery
stories, I hope that when Harel Yosef gets out of the ICU, my nephew will tell
me and I will get to interview him personally. I’ll also get a Mitzvah of
visiting the sick.

Day 461
I drove a few hours today about 184km. My
Nephew told me that his nephew Harel Yosef ben Michal the tank commander was
initially critically injured but is awake in the ICU. An explosive device
damaged the belly of his tank so he ordered the men to back up and right over
the very large explosive device killing outright three of them and knocking a 7
meter deep hole into the ground something like 22 to 24 feet deep. https://www.timesofisrael.com/3-soldiers-killed-in-northern-gaza-fighting-raising-ground-offensive-toll-to-401/

Last night, I said to Rabbi Goldberg, “The
Houthis did not sent a missile for a few days, be prepared tonight.” And yes
they sent three drones last night all shot down and one missile in the wee
hours this morning shot down. https://www.timesofisrael.com/army-says-trio-of-suspected-houthi-drones-downed-ending-short-lived-lull/

Today there was a power failure that caused a
surge that knocked out my neighbor’s deep freezer. Our back-up batteries from
Solar Energy had our back. Also in about 9 days of use, I have emissions from
six trees worth of CO2 emissions. Can’t say the same for CA negligence.
