Parsha Ki Sisa, stories remember Parsha Para this week.

In Memorium Mordechai Mendel ben Yosef my father-in-law who passed away on the 20th of Adar 5 years ago.

Error correction: The name of the Nazi who committed suicide was Hermann Goring.

Parsha Ki Sisa

Rabbi Barak Kochavi Shlita told a parable about two business partners. They did fine business together. One day one of the partners broke trust and went over to work with the opposition. However, in the end the partner realized that he was better off with the original partner so he asked to renew the partnership. This time it was harder to rebuild the trust of the other. The parable is about Am Yisrael with HASHEM and the opposition is the Egel HaZahav. In order to renew the partnership, it would take the Mishkan to be built via donations and efforts of the nation.

Another Parable is Israel and the 70 nations: The Shepherd took his sheep out to pasture. There was a pack of wolves out there and the Shepherd said to the sheep, don’t worry as long as I am here, you have nothing to fear. However, the wolves started smiling at the sheep. The sheep told the Shepherd that you could go for the wolves are friendly. As soon as the Shepherd started to move away, their smiles turned into a meal. [I don’t know how many times ‘Witnesses’ and other Missionaries have come up with smiles to me and my friends.] – parable thanks to a film on What’s App from Chabad.

30:11 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 12 'When thou take the sum of the children of Israel, according to their number, then shall they give every man a ransom for his soul unto the LORD, when thou number them; that there be no plague among them, when thou number them.

This is a command from G-D that one counts Jews, one must give charity. What happens is that individuals are not counted but coins and according to the number of coins or Shekels since a half Shekel is given, we determine how many there are. The Kabbalah speaks of the evil-eye and that we should not be counted like the stars and grains of sand as told to Avraham.

13 This they shall give, every one that passes among them that are numbered, half a shekel after the shekel of the sanctuary--the shekel is twenty gerahs--half a shekel for an offering to the LORD. 14 Every one that passes among them that are numbered, from twenty years old and upward, shall give the offering of the LORD.

This is not a census for it is only males over the age of 20. Here it does not say over 60, after the army, but upwards.
From the age of twenty and upward: [The Torah] teaches you here that no one under twenty years old goes out [to serve] in the army or is counted among men.

15 The rich shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less, than the half shekel, when they give the offering of the LORD, to make atonement for your souls. 16 And thou shalt take the atonement money from the children of Israel, and shalt appoint it for the service of the tent of meeting, that it may be a memorial for the children of Israel before the LORD, to make atonement for your souls.'

It appears to me that there is something to do with the power of the Angel of Death and prosecutor of the world has power over numbers. We see this is Meseches Pessach chapter 10 about demons and even glasses of drink regarding the four cups but Pessach is the night of being guarded. I do not understand the dynamics of evil, mysticism and numbers but bring it down to say that form the Torah there is something to it with relation to the next world. For the Torah does not mince words and nothing is extraneous but rather a lesson to be learned or a warning to us.

17 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 18 'Thou shalt also make a laver of brass, and the base thereof of brass, whereat to wash; and thou shalt put it between the tent of meeting and the altar, and thou shalt put water therein. 19 And Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands and their feet thereat;

From a modern standpoint, this is sanity. However, most people who slaughter and sacrifice animals do not touch their feet so here again there is more than just sanitation of the modern man who knows of germs and viruses. In the Torah it is against Tuma or ritual impurity and it cannot be measured by modern means. What is the difference with Tuma and Tahor? Again there is some sort of spiritual connection which is not of our physical world! But woe to the Cohain who does not wash both his hands and feet. For it says “that they die not” (not once but twice in 20 and 21 below) and medically one can see no difference.

20 when they go into the tent of meeting, they shall wash with water, that they die not; or when they come near to the altar to minister, to cause an offering made by fire to smoke unto the LORD; 21 so they shall wash their hands and their feet, that they die not; and it shall be a statute forever to them, even to him and to his seed throughout their generations.'

This is said every morning when we say the Korbanos at the start of the Shachris Service.

…31:12 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 13 'Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying: Verily ye shall keep My Sabbaths, for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that ye may know that I am the LORD who sanctify you.

And you, speak to the children of Israel: But [as for] you, although I have mandated you to command them [the Israelites] concerning the work of the Mishkan, do not let it seem to you that you may easily set aside the Sabbath because of that work. Only keep My Sabbaths: Although you will be rushed to perform the work [of the Mishkan] quickly, the Sabbath shall not be set aside because of it. All instances of אַ and רַק [imply limitations, i.e.,] are exclusive, to exclude the Sabbath from the work of the Mishkan. For it is a sign between Me and you: It is a sign of distinction between us that I have chosen you, by granting you as an inheritance My day of rest for [your] rest. To know: [So that] the nations [should know] that I, the Lord, sanctify you.

Verily ye shall keep My Sabbaths …  guard the Shabbos as a member of the king’s guard looks out for him. For it is a sign between Me and you … only the Bnei Yisrael. This is why prior to conversion a non-Jew must light a match on Shabbos. This will continue as a statute forever and applies equally in Yisrael and Gallus.

14 Ye shall keep the Sabbath therefore, for it is holy unto you; every one that profanes it shall surely be put to death; for whosoever does any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people.

You will keep and observe Shabbos properly as commanded on Mt. Sinai in the Oral Torah not to do 39 Melachos. If you profane it by Shogeg (accidently forgetting either that it was Shabbos or that the Melacha was forbidden), then you bring a Korban Chatas and it will atone for you with your regret.

However, if you are warned by two witnesses to cease and desist, then if you violate it, you are Mayzid (culpable) and put to death. If there is only one witness that you are Mayzid, then you will be cut off from the people both in this world and the next.

15 Six days shall work be done; but on the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, holy to the LORD; whosoever does any work in the Sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.

A Sabbath of complete rest: Heb. שַׁבָּתשַׁבָּתוֹן, a reposeful rest, not a casual rest. (A Sabbath of complete rest: For this reason, Scripture repeated it [the word, שַׁבָּת], to inform [us] that on it all work is prohibited, even what is needed for food. Similarly regarding Yom Kippur, in whose context it says: “It is a Sabbath of complete rest for you” (Lev. 23:32), all work is prohibited. However, concerning festivals it says only: “on the first day is a rest, and on the eighth day is a rest” (Lev. 23:39), [meaning that] on them [i.e., on holidays] only servile work is prohibited, but work needed for food [preparation] is permitted.) holy to the Lord: The observance of its sanctity shall be for My name and by My commandment.

16 Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant.

Shabbos observance does not stop at Sinai or in Temple times but throughout all generations.

17 It is a sign between Me and the children of Israel for ever; for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day He ceased from work and rested.'

It our pact only. It is between HASHEM and the Bnei Yisrael and nobody else! We are practicing being in the image of G-D just as HE rested, so must we.

18 And He gave unto Moses, when He had made an end of speaking with him upon mount Sinai, the two tables of the testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.

The botch up. Just as Adam botched things up in Gan Eden and it was repaired at Sinai now another botch up was to occur. We were supposed to have the two Tablets of the Bris and upon entering Eretz Yisrael establishing Malchus Moshiach (Kingdom of Moshiach) even before David and he would have been either Amminadav or Ben Amminadav.

32:1 And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him: 'Up, make us a god who shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we know not what is become of him.'

How fickle is mankind. On Sinai (Shabbos 88) their souls would go in and out of their bodies upon hearing the first two commandments of the Decalogue. Now they were violating the first of the two!

2 And Aaron said unto them: 'Break off the golden rings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me.'

This was a delaying tactic but they almost ripped their earlobes and hurt their wives’ fingers to get to the gold for the idol they were so entrenched in their Yetzer.

3 And all the people broke off the golden rings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron.

Hur tried to resist them and was murdered.

4 And he received it at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, and made it a molten calf; and they said: 'This is thy god, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.' 5 And when Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation, and said: 'To-morrow shall be a feast to the LORD.' 6 And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt-offerings, and brought peace-offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to make merry.

Tomorrow, for maybe Moshe will return by then and stop them.

7 And the LORD spoke unto Moses: 'Go, get thee down; for thy people, that thou brought up out of the land of Egypt, have dealt corruptly;

They have gone against me in a revolt and anarchy will reign if Aaron is murdered too.

8 they have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them; they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed unto it, and said: This is thy god, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.' 9 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people. 10 Now therefore let Me alone, that My wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them; and I will make of thee a great nation.'

This was in total 3000 people or about half a percent of the men and perhaps the number included women and children which make it perhaps an eighth of a percent of the Bnei Yisrael. All the more so today with the violation by a number of parents of the Bris, the Shabbos, and all sorts of disgusting and abominable relationships and more. This is topped by intermarriage, casting off the faith like the Jew who became Muslim and wanted to work for ISIS.

11 And Moses besought the LORD his God, and said: 'LORD, why does YOUR wrath wax hot against Thy people, that Thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand?

It is Moshe’s prayer that saves the nation from destruction. For sitting there passively sometimes is not an option. There is a time for sitting and not doing but when things get out of hand there is a time for action. When I see my nation going downhill so that many like myself and my parents are children that were “captured” by Goyim, I cannot sit on my rear and just learn for myself improvement in the Kollel, NO I HAVE TO EDUCATE PEOPLE ON SHABBOS, FAMILY PURITY, KASHRUS AND AT TIMES DEREK ERETZ OR PROPER TORAH MANNERS. We will not get MOSHIACH NOW by me just sitting and learning and not pressing forward with Torah to the Nation of Israel.

… 15 And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, with the two tables of the testimony in his hand; tables that were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written. 16 And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables. 17 And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said unto Moses: 'There is a noise of war in the camp.' 18 And he said: 'It is not the voice of them that shout for mastery, neither is it the voice of them that cry for being overcome, but the noise of them that sing do I hear.' 19 And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf and the dancing; and Moses' anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and broke them beneath the mount. 20 And he took the calf which they had made, and burnt it with fire, and ground it to powder, and strewed it upon the water, and made the children of Israel drink of it. …26 then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said: 'Whoso is on the LORD'S side, let him come unto me.' And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him. 27 And he said unto them: 'Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Put ye every man his sword upon his thigh, and go to and fro from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbor.'

There shall be no mercy on this abomination in Israel and it must be thoroughly eradicated like a surgeon who cuts out cancer from the body. This was spiritual cancer and the gold was turned into powder and put into their water making it a bitter drink for them as a lesson. For punishment is meant to teach. That is why a child should get punished on the spot for misbehavior and not “wait until you get home”. Rather a small time out and mention a little more like no TV today or something similar such as music or play etc.

Now Moshe tells them what HASHEM wanted to do to them …33:3 unto a land flowing with milk and honey; for I will not go up in the midst of thee; for thou art a stiffnecked people; lest I consume thee in the way.' 4 And when the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned; and no man did put on him his ornaments. 5 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Say unto the children of Israel: Ye are a stiffnecked people; if I go up into the midst of thee for one moment, I shall consume thee; therefore now put off thy ornaments from thee, that I may know what to do unto thee.' 6 And the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments from mount Horev onward. …11 And the LORD spoke unto Moses face to face, as a man speaks unto his friend. And he would return into the camp; but his minister Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the Tent.

By removing their jewelry and standing by their tents they showed repentance with actions. “A young man” – Yehoshua was about 52 or so at the time based on the forty years in the wilderness and conquest of the land until his passing at the age of 110. So everything is relative and it was based on his Torah Wisdom that he was young.

The way to repentance is shown in the Glory of HASHEM to Moshe and the warning to stay away from the idol and strange worship of the Goyim. For even if the Rambam says that Islam is not Idol Worship it is strange worship founded by one blood thirsty man. Christianity originally was Judaism with Yeshu as the Moshiach and Shaul aka Paul was given the Heter to change it into a non-Shabbos religion for as I wrote above “Shabbos is between ME and the Bnei Yisrael”. It is not for everybody. So Christianity became for the masses and Yules and other strange things crept into the original religion which was closer to a form or Orthodox Judaism with Yeshu as the Moshiach.

34:12 Take heed to thyself, lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land whither thou go, lest they be for a snare in the midst of thee. 13 But ye shall break down their altars, and dash in pieces their pillars, and ye shall cut down their Asherim. 14 For thou shalt bow down to no other god; for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God; 15 lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they go astray after their gods, and do sacrifice unto their gods, and they call thee, and thou eat of their sacrifice; 16 and thou take of their daughters unto thy sons, and their daughters go astray after their gods, and make thy sons go astray after their gods. 17 Thou shalt make thee no molten gods. 18 The feast of unleavened bread shalt thou keep. Seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, as I commanded thee, at the time appointed in the month Abib, for in the month Abib thou came out from Egypt. 19 All that opens the womb is Mine; and of all thy cattle thou shalt sanctify the males, the firstlings of ox and sheep. 20 And the firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a lamb; and if thou wilt not redeem it, then thou shalt break its neck. All the first-born of thy sons thou shalt redeem. And none shall appear before Me empty. 21 Six days thou shalt work, but on the seventh day thou shalt rest; in plowing time and in harvest thou shalt rest.

Besides a warning against idol worship there comes a warning for observing Shabbos and Yom Tov.

22 And thou shalt observe the feast of weeks, even of the first-fruits of wheat harvest, and the feast of ingathering at the turn of the year. 23 Three times in the year shall all thy males appear before the Lord GOD, the God of Israel. 24 For I will cast out nations before thee, and enlarge thy borders; neither shall any man covet thy land, when thou goest up to appear before the LORD thy God three times in the year. 25 Thou shalt not offer the blood of My sacrifice with leavened bread; neither shall the sacrifice of the feast of the Passover be left unto the morning. 26 The choicest first-fruits of thy land thou shalt bring unto the house of the LORD thy God. Thou shalt not seethe a kid in its mother's milk.' …32 And afterward all the children of Israel came nigh, and he gave them in commandment all that the LORD had spoken with him in mount Sinai. 33 And when Moses had done speaking with them, he put a veil on his face. 34 But when Moses went in before the LORD that He might speak with him, he took the veil off, until he came out; and he came out; and spoke unto the children of Israel that which he was commanded. 35 And the children of Israel saw the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses' face sent forth beams; and Moses put the veil back upon his face, until he went in to speak with Him.

The Annual Purim Parties

Where I live, there is a good atmosphere radiating from Chabad. It is not just the Simcha but the non-Judgmental attitude of the people. Twice a Year (at least) Yoel Hirsch invites the Chabad to a party at his house. One is in the Sukkah on Chol HaMoed Sukkos and another the night that Purim comes in. He is generous with the liquor and meat at the meals. Yoel is a special person. He was a former NYFD who was injured in his hip and had to retire. Every once in a while without much fanfare, he goes to NY for a medical check-up or treatment and I don’t ask questions about this. There is great Simcha at his Party and a Chabad Verbrengung. Last year two women got together to play Hillary and Trump with masks it was so cute.

Rabbi Rafi Solomon Shlita also has a party for the main meal of Purim. Each year he adds guests and hopes that they will return the next year. At this Party which consists of families and over 50 people attending it is a bit too much for Rafi and his lovely wife to make all the food so each family brings a little something. Rafi who is a Mashgiach makes about 70% of the Salads and some of the other food.

What is most interesting is that Rafi manages to drink not 4 cups of wine but many cups and manages to bless each guest. He is non-Judgmental of people. He blesses people for their internal spiritual qualities. I watched him praise a girl with a short skirt with a blessing the same as the niece who was very modest in dress.

Last year, I sat near a religious female army officer. This year she is about to be promoted extremely fast to Major. She is only 26. He told us that when she was a Shabbos guest at his house, she wanted to quit the army. He told her make it into a career for it has good pay and a good pension. I wanted to bless the girl with a Shidduch this year but Rafi did so before me. I said a louder Amen than her father who was next to me. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT I MENTION THIS BECAUSE OF TWO NEWS ARTICLES AGAINST FEMALE COMBAT OFFICERS AND THE DISPUTE ABOUT RELIGIOUS GIRLS IN THE ARMY.

For the last three years Menashe has asked him Purim questions which stump him and has obtain 50 NIS. He recognizes the boy’s potential and this year Menashe found in the new guest a new boy his age to converse and play with.

Rafi’s version of “What goes around comes around” story 1

About 35 years ago, 19-year-old Mr. Solomon was teaching a young boy. He taught the youngster the importance of keeping Kashrus. The boy went home and asked his mother for kosher. That to put it mildly did not go over big with her. The boy persisted and the mother finally gave in.

When he saw Rafi, he said that you saved my life with your teachings. Rafi had to be in Daytona Beach and was staying at motels and spending a small fortune. He met the man and was told I have a two room apt and I only need one come over and don’t spend so much on anything. A few weeks ago there was a notice on the door ‘rent renewal’ and it was paid in full by this fellow saving Rafi a large sum of money and he asked for nothing in return.

Daytona Beach and the Reward from HASHEM story 2

Rabbi Rafael Solomon Shlita aka Rafi (see below the stories of the Purim Parties) told us a story of a man named Pinchas and his wife with permission from Pinchas. Pinchas started out as a non-religious Israel who wanted to make some money in the USA. Most don’t succeed but Pinchas started out selling T shirts 5 for $10 at a small stand in Daytona Beach. He succeeded and opened up a store and then a few stores.

Pinchas was not religious in any way, shape or form. The local Shaliach from Chabad came over asked him if he was Jewish and he answered affirmatively. He reached his hand into the cash draw and donated to the Rabbi his cash on hand. This repeated a number of times until he was convinced to go to the Synagogue.

Pinchas gradually became Shomer Shabbos and started buying up beach front stories and property. At this time another Israeli opened up a T shirt store but did not succeed. In fact, he and his wife had no furniture and the baby was sleeping on a blanket placed on the floor. Pinchas’s wife organized a baby shower in secret. Afterwards, Pinchas got together with another man and brought a truck load of furniture and baby things and furnished the whole apartment for the couple. They eventually returned to Israel.

Pinchas had wanted to purchase a property right next to his store and the other man would not sell and kept raising his price. Finally, Pinchas got him to agree to sell him for a large fee part of the property. The other wanted to turn the property into parking lot which would be great for Pinchas to have customers with parking near-by.

When the man went with plans to the city to build the parking lot, he was told that he need a second entrance or exit due to the size of it. He wanted to buy back part or all of the lot. In the meantime, Pinchas had plans for expansion and was given the OK for a larger store. Pinchas now said that he could not sell. So the man said that he would give the rest of the property to Pinchas. Now Pinchas was not sure if this was legitimate so he checked with his lawyer and it was on the up and up. The man had given Pinchas $400,000 lot!

Pinchas sat in his office astounded. In his shops, he had an Indian Partner. The secretary would get the mail and put the letters in Hindi in a pile. However, Pinchas noticed one letter was in Hebrew which the secretary did not know. He opened it was a thank you for all his wife and he had done and a picture of the lady and his wife by the store taken with the empty lot in the background. This was as if to say for his Chessed to the family, HASHEM was giving him the lot.
