Parshiyos Matos-Massei, story and maily Israeli news.

Parshiyos Matos-Massei

In our Parsha we have a section after the war of Midian dealing with ritual purification in a Mikvah. I recently received a question about the 40 Log needed for the Mikvah. (1 Log = 4 Kiddush Cups of water. So the Mikvah is 160 the amount of water that is held by  a Kiddush Cup. quantity did not appear to the potential Ger to be enough to cover a human body. To understand how the 40 Logs work is like this. We gather during the rainstorm in one place 40 Seahs. We collect this in a small area. The main Mikvah next door is then filled up with tap water. The plug or passage from the rain Mikvah now is opened and the waters kiss or are unified making the other section also part of the Mikvah. In short, once the Mikvah has 40 Logs of water, any amount of tap water can be added as it is a Mikvah that is growing. If the Mikvah fall to 37 Logs and under, it can no longer be added too except ice from snow or a frozen natural lake or more rain.

A minimum lever of a Kiddush Cup that is kosher is 86.4 ml x 160 or 13,824 ml. The minimum amount of rain water is less that 14 cubic liters.

Moshe Rabbaynu spoke either to the elders or the tribes. Just like present governments often he was with the Sanhedrin. However, when new Halachos were taught or Mussar, he spoke to all the tribes. Every man was taught the basics and then the wiser ones led them.

30:2 And Moses spoke unto the heads of the tribes of the children of Israel, saying: This is the thing which the LORD hath commanded. 3 When a man vows a vow unto the LORD, or swears an oath to bind his soul with a bond, he shall not break his word; he shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.

One should always speak the truth and meet his obligations. Since men are usually logical, they should refrain from making hasty vows and swearing in vain. However, it happens that many simple folk with their roots in Arab lands, swear like their Arab cousins and they make haste with their words. Talmidei Chachamim from these areas are careful but the Am HaAretz folks are not.

4 Also when a woman vows a vow unto the LORD, and binds herself by a bond, being in her father's house, in her youth,

She did this without the knowledge of her father or below the wife without the knowledge of her husband.

5 and her father hears her vow, or her bond wherewith she hath bound her soul, and her father holds his peace at her, then all her vows shall stand, and every bond wherewith she hath bound her soul shall stand. 6 But if her father disallow her in the day that he hears, none of her vows, or of her bonds wherewith she hath bound her soul, shall stand; and the LORD will forgive her, because her father disallowed her.

The father or the husband has the right to annul the vow.

7 And if she be married to a husband, while her vows are upon her, or the clear utterance of her lips, wherewith she hath bound her soul; 8 and her husband hear it, whatsoever day it be that he hears it, and hold his peace at her; then her vows shall stand, and her bonds wherewith she hath bound her soul shall stand. 9 But if her husband disallow her in the day that he hears it, then he shall make void her vow which is upon her, and the clear utterance of her lips, wherewith she hath bound her soul; and the LORD will forgive her. 10 But the vow of a widow, or of her that is divorced, even everything wherewith she hath bound her soul, shall stand against her.

She answers to nobody but HASHEM and therefore her vow stands.

11 And if a woman vowed in her husband's house, or bound her soul by a bond with an oath, 12 and her husband heard it, and held his peace at her, and disallowed her not, then all her vows shall stand, and every bond wherewith she bound her soul shall stand. 13 But if her husband make them null and void in the day that he hears them, then whatsoever proceeded out of her lips, whether it were her vows, or the bond of her soul, shall not stand: her husband hath made them void; and the LORD will forgive her. 14 Every vow, and every binding oath to afflict the soul, her husband may let it stand, or her husband may make it void. 15 But if her husband altogether hold his peace at her from day to day, then he causes all her vows to stand, or all her bonds, which are upon her; he hath let them stand, because he held his peace at her in the day that he heard them. 16 But if he shall make them null and void after that he hath heard them, then he shall bear her iniquity. 17 These are the statutes, which the LORD commanded Moses, between a man and his wife, between a father and his daughter, being in her youth, in her father's house.

I wrote a story about taking two of my co-workers to make a Beis Din to forgive a vow of our boss’s secretary that she made before she was married. In the end, she was blessed with twins and could give her husband’s father’s name to one and the name she wanted to the other. Sometimes, when one regrets and does things the Torah way, HASHEM comes and makes the best Shalom Beis possible.

31:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 'Avenge the children of Israel of the Midianites; afterward shalt thou be gathered unto thy people.'

Moshe did not delay and dawdle in acting out this command even if would leave this world quicker. He made haste!

3 And Moses spoke unto the people, saying: 'Arm ye men from among you for the war, that they may go against Midian, to execute the LORD'S vengeance on Midian.

Midian was small in number and 600,000 troops were not needed. It was enough a compact fighting force of one thousand from each tribe with another thousand to bring supplies and one thousand to pray. In total 36,000 in which, only one third was fighting soldiers.

4 Of every tribe a thousand, throughout all the tribes of Israel, shall ye send to the war.' 5 So there were delivered, out of the thousands of Israel, a thousand of every tribe, twelve thousand armed for war. 6 And Moses sent them, a thousand of every tribe, to the war, them and Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, to the war, with the holy vessels and the trumpets for the alarm in his hand.

Only in Devarim will we learn what the Cohain has to say to the people going to war.

7 And they warred against Midian, as the LORD commanded Moses; and they slew every male. 8 And they slew the kings of Midian with the rest of their slain: Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian; Balaam also the son of Beor they slew with the sword.

If Bilaam went home after Parsha Balak what is he doing here now? He advised them on Baal Peor and there for came to receive his monetary reward. But he was not expecting this rewards. He did to realize that the sword would be his reward for causing the murder of many Jews

9 And the children of Israel took captive the women of Midian and their little ones; and all their cattle, and all their flocks, and all their goods, they took for a prey.

In most wars, the men were killed, women captured with their children but this was not the instructions that Moshe had given them.

10 And all their cities in the places wherein they dwelt, and all their encampments, they burnt with fire. 11 And they took all the spoil, and all the prey, both of man and of beast. 12 And they brought the captives, and the prey, and the spoil, unto Moses, and unto Eleazar the priest, and unto the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the camp, unto the plains of Moab, which are by the Jordan at Jericho.

First it says that they slew the men but then we read of captives. What I believe happened is that the fighting men were slaughtered and non-fighters,
women and perhaps children captured. This was the conventional way of waging war at the time. But this is not what Moshe commanded.

13 And Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and all the princes of the congregation, went forth to meet them without the camp. 14 And Moses was wroth with the officers of the host, the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds, who came from the service of the war. 15 And Moses said unto them: 'Have ye saved all the women alive? 16 Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to revolt so as to break faith with the LORD in the matter of Peor, and so the plague was among the congregation of the LORD. 17 Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him.

Today our commentators state from the age of three and under for females. But was this really so. Even the Arabs in Gaza do not marry females under the age of six.

18 But all the women children, that have not known man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves. 19 And encamp ye without the camp seven days; whosoever hath killed any person, and whosoever hath touched any slain, purify yourselves on the third day and on the seventh day, ye and your captives.

We hold in practice today that a non-Jew produces Tuma but I have neither seen nor heard from my teachers that we would act this way on the 3rd and 7th day.

20 And as to every garment, and all that is made of skin, and all work of goats' hair, and all things made of wood, ye shall purify.'

Garments are purified in a regular Mikvah.

21 And Eleazar the priest said unto the men of war that went to the battle: 'This is the statute of the law which the LORD hath commanded Moses: 22 Howbeit the gold, and the silver, the brass, the iron, the tin, and the lead, 23 everything that may abide the fire, ye shall make to go through the fire, and it shall be clean; nevertheless it shall be purified with the water of sprinkling; and all that abides not the fire ye shall make to go through the water. 24 And ye shall wash your clothes on the seventh day, and ye shall be clean, and afterward ye may come into the camp.'

This is how we purify either by fire or by the waters of a Mikvah.

25 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 26 'Take the sum of the prey that was taken, both of man and of beast, thou, and Eleazar the priest, and the heads of the fathers' houses of the congregation; 27 and divide the prey into two parts: between the men skilled in war, that went out to battle, and all the congregation; 28 and levy a tribute unto the LORD of the men of war that went out to battle: one soul of five hundred, both of the persons, and of the beeves, and of the asses, and of the flocks; 29 take it of their half, and give it unto Eleazar the priest, as a portion set apart for the LORD.

To the victors belong the spoils but the workers of the L-RD receive something too for prayers.

30 And of the children of Israel's half, thou shalt take one drawn out of every fifty, of the persons, of the beeves, of the asses, and of the flocks, even of all the cattle, and give them unto the Levites, that keep the charge of the tabernacle of the LORD.' 31 And Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the LORD commanded Moses. 32 Now the prey, over and above the booty which the men of war took, was six hundred thousand and seventy thousand and five thousand sheep, 33 and threescore and twelve thousand beeves, 34 and threescore and one thousand asses, 35 and thirty and two thousand persons in all, of the women that had not known man by lying with him. 36 And the half, which was the portion of them that went out to war, was in number three hundred thousand and thirty thousand and seven thousand and five hundred sheep. 37 And the LORD'S tribute of the sheep was six hundred and threescore and fifteen. 38 And the beeves were thirty and six thousand, of which the LORD'S tribute was threescore and twelve. 39 And the asses were thirty thousand and five hundred, of which the LORD'S tribute was threescore and one. 40 And the persons were sixteen thousand, of whom the LORD'S tribute was thirty and two persons. 41 And Moses gave the tribute, which was set apart for the LORD, unto Eleazar the priest, as the LORD commanded Moses. 42 And of the children of Israel's half, which Moses divided off from the men that warred-- 43 now the congregation's half was three hundred thousand and thirty thousand and seven thousand and five hundred sheep, 44 and thirty and six thousand beeves, 45 and thirty thousand and five hundred asses, 46 and sixteen thousand persons-- 47 even of the children of Israel's half, Moses took one drawn out of every fifty, both of man and of beast, and gave them unto the Levites, that kept the charge of the tabernacle of the LORD; as the LORD commanded Moses.

The initial splitting of the money went to the Mishkan and Cohanim now the Leviim received a little

48 And the officers that were over the thousands of the host, the captains of thousands, and the captains of hundreds, came near unto Moses; 49 and they said unto Moses: 'Thy servants have taken the sum of the men of war that are under our charge, and there lacks not one man of us. 50 And we have brought the LORD'S offering, what every man hath gotten, of jewels of gold, armlets, and bracelets, signet-rings, ear-rings, and girdles, to make atonement for our souls before the LORD.' 51 And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold of them, even all wrought jewels. 52 And all the gold of the gift that they set apart for the LORD, of the captains of thousands, and of the captains of hundreds, was sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels.-- 53 For the men of war had taken booty, every man for himself.-- 54 And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold of the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it into the tent of meeting, for a memorial for the children of Israel before the LORD.

On top of that, the leaders donated more. Not quite the swamp and cesspools of governments of today around the world.
32: 1 Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of cattle; and when they saw the land of Jazer, and the land of Gilead, that, behold, the place was a place for cattle, 2 the children of Gad and the children of Reuben came and spoke unto Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and unto the princes of the congregation, saying: 3 'Ataroth, and Dibon, and Jazer, and Nimrah, and Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Sebam, and Nebo, and Beon, 4 the land which the LORD smote before the congregation of Israel, is a land for cattle, and thy servants have cattle.' 5 And they said: 'If we have found favor in thy sight, let this land be given unto thy servants for a possession; bring us not over the Jordan.'

Oy Vey yet again people do not want to pass over the Yarden into the promised land. They have asked Moshe permission but he is getting upset.

6 And Moses said unto the children of Gad and to the children of Reuben: 'Shall your brethren go to the war, and shall ye sit here? 7 And wherefore will ye turn away the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which the LORD hath given them? 8 Thus did your fathers, when I sent them from Kadesh-Barnea to see the land. 9 For when they went up unto the valley of Eshcol, and saw the land, they turned away the heart of the children of Israel, that they should not go into the land which the LORD had given them. 10 And the LORD'S anger was kindled in that day, and He swore, saying: 11 Surely none of the men that came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I swore unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob; because they have not wholly followed Me; 12 save Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, and Joshua the son of Nun; because they have wholly followed the LORD. 13 And the LORD'S anger was kindled against Israel, and He made them wander to and fro in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation, that had done evil in the sight of the LORD, was consumed.

Are you rebelling like them and causing death and destruction in this generation?

14 And, behold, ye are risen up in your fathers' stead, a brood of sinful men, to augment yet the fierce anger of the LORD toward Israel. 15 For if ye turn away from after Him, He will yet again leave them in the wilderness; and so ye will destroy all this people.'

Are you going to bring death and destruction upon the people of Israel. Zimri and Baal Peor were not enough!

16 And they came near unto him, and said: 'We will build sheepfolds here for our cattle, and cities for our little ones; 17 but we ourselves will be ready armed to go before the children of Israel, until we have brought them unto their place; and our little ones shall dwell in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land. 18 We will not return unto our houses, until the children of Israel have inherited every man his inheritance. 19 For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan, and forward, because our inheritance is fallen to us on this side of the Jordan eastward.'

We will go first in the conquest of the land only leaving our livestock and families in our new lands. We will help in the conquest.

20 And Moses said unto them: 'If ye will do this thing: if ye will arm yourselves to go before the LORD to the war, 21 and every armed man of you will pass over the Jordan before the LORD, until He hath driven out His enemies from before Him, 22 and the land be subdued before the LORD, and ye return afterward; then ye shall be clear before the LORD, and before Israel, and this land shall be unto you for a possession before the LORD.

If you go forward as you say and fight for your brothers and the land, you shall be cleared of any wrong doing.

23 But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the LORD; and know ye your sin which will find you.

The actions that you promise will bring a blessing upon you but if not, the sins will find you and your lives will not be worth the smallest of coins.

24 Build you cities for your little ones, and folds for your sheep; and do that which hath proceeded out of your mouth.' 25 And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben spoke unto Moses, saying: 'Thy servants will do as my lord commands. 26 Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our cattle, shall be there in the cities of Gilead; 27 but thy servants will pass over, every man that is armed for war, before the LORD to battle, as my lord says.' 28 So Moses gave charge concerning them to Eleazar the priest, and to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the heads of the fathers' houses of the tribes of the children of Israel. 29 And Moses said unto them: 'If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben will pass with you over the Jordan, every man that is armed to battle, before the LORD, and the land shall be subdued before you, then ye shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession; 30 but if they will not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan.' 31 And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying: 'As the LORD hath said unto thy servants, so will we do. 32 We will pass over armed before the LORD into the land of Canaan, and the possession of our inheritance shall remain with us beyond the Jordan.' 33 And Moses gave unto them, even to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, and unto the half-tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land, according to the cities thereof with their borders, even the cities of the land round about.

They received their stake in the land that they preferred. They will fortify their area and return for war.

33: 1 These are the stages of the children of Israel, by which they went forth out of the land of Egypt by their hosts under the hand of Moses and Aaron. 2 And Moses wrote their goings forth, stage by stage, by the commandment of the LORD; and these are their stages at their goings forth. 3 And they journeyed from Rameses in the first month, on the fifteenth day of the first month; on the morrow after the Passover the children of Israel went out with a high hand in the sight of all the Egyptians,

A lot of different stops were made the first year until reaching Sinai and then only a few stops made after the next 38 years. Finally as they leave Kadesh-Barnea in the 40th year, they travel again to a number of place.

… 49 And they pitched by the Jordan, from Beth-jeshimoth even unto Abel-shittim in the plains of Moab.

This was the last camp near Har Nevo as Moshe completes the giving of the Torah, hands the reigns over to Yehoshua and the people mourn for 30 days.

50 And the LORD spoke unto Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying: 51 'Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them: When ye pass over the Jordan into the land of Canaan, 52 then ye shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you, and destroy all their figured stones, and destroy all their molten images, and demolish all their high places.

You will drive out all of the inhabitants and utterly destroy their religious places.

53 And ye shall drive out the inhabitants of the land, and dwell therein; for unto you have I given the land to possess it. 54 And ye shall inherit the land by lot according to your families--to the more ye shall give the more inheritance, and to the fewer thou shalt give the less inheritance; wheresoever the lot falls to any man, that shall be his; according to the tribes of your fathers shall ye inherit.

They shall leave the land but if they stay woe unto thee:

55 But if ye will not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you, then shall those that ye let remain of them be as thorns in your eyes, and as pricks in your sides, and they shall harass you in the land wherein ye dwell.

The original Zionist and Moshe Dayan prevented the Arabs from fleeing Yehuda and the Shomron for they were a cheap source of labor for the Kibbutzim. As a result.

56 And it shall come to pass, that as I thought to do unto them, so will I do unto you.

They are thorns and thistles and shoot, throw blocks, very large stones on cars and blow up buses. So instead of the Gezaira on them, we get the Gezaira.
34: 1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 'Command the children of Israel, and say unto them: When ye come into the land of Canaan, this shall be the land that shall fall unto you for an inheritance, even the land of Canaan according to the borders thereof. 3 Thus your south side shall be from the wilderness of Zin close by the side of Edom, and your south border shall begin at the end of the Salt Sea eastward; 4 and your border shall turn about southward of the ascent of Akrabbim, and pass along to Zin; and the goings out thereof shall be southward of Kadesh-barnea; and it shall go forth to Hazar-addar, and pass along to Azmon; 5 and the border shall turn about from Azmon unto the Brook of Egypt, and the goings out thereof shall be at the Sea. 6 And for the western border, ye shall have the Great Sea for a border; this shall be your west border. 7 And this shall be your north border: from the Great Sea ye shall mark out your line unto mount Hor; 8 from mount Hor ye shall mark out a line unto the entrance to Hamath; and the goings out of the border shall be at Zedad;

From Mount Hor: you shall turn and continue along the northern border eastward, and then you will arrive at the entrance to Hamath, which is Antioch. - [Targum Yerushalmi]  And the ends of the border: Heb. תּוֹצְאֹת הַגּבוּל, the ends of the border. Whenever [Scripture] mentions “the ends of the border” either the boundary line ends there completely and does not continue further in that direction, or from there it spreads out, broadens, and extends backwards, continuing in a more slanting direction than [encompassed in] the original expanse. In relation to the breadth of the original dimension, it is called the ends, for that dimension ends there.

This is not the Euphrates as originally promised but well north of Damascus of today in the Aleppo area very far to the north or about at least 400 km north of the Damascus of today so it is more than 250 miles north of the Har Hermon. It is 615 km from Har Hermon to Eilat so that adds 66% to the current Eretz Yisrael. If it were to the Euphrates it would double the distance from south to north. Antioch as Rashi writes puts us also very deep into Lebanon close to the Turkish Border.

13 And Moses commanded the children of Israel, saying: 'This is the land wherein ye shall receive inheritance by lot, which the LORD hath commanded to give unto the nine tribes, and to the half-tribe;

The lot casting will be done after the conquest of the land and then the land can be parceled out. Note that the Tribe of Dan had two different portions. One by the current Tel Dan in the north and one in the area from around the Beis Shemesh area to the modern Herzliya. The tradition has Dan being buried between Shimshon Junction and Highway 3 along that road. Rabban Gamliel and Yehuda are buried in Yahud.

…15 the two tribes and the half-tribe have received their inheritance beyond the Jordan at Jericho eastward, toward the sun-rising.'

Their portion is known and so are the three cities of refuge.

16 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 17 'These are the names of the men that shall take possession of the land for you: Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun. 18 And ye shall take one prince of every tribe, to take possession of the land. 19 And these are the names of the men: of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Yephunneh. 20 And of the tribe of the children of Simeon, Shemuel the son of Ammihud. 21 Of the tribe of Benjamin, Elidad the son of Chislon. 22 And of the tribe of the children of Dan a prince, Bukki the son of Jogli. 23 Of the children of Joseph: of the tribe of the children of Manasseh a prince, Hanniel the son of Ephod; 24 and of the tribe of the children of Ephraim a prince, Kemuel the son of Shiphtan. 25 And of the tribe of the children of Zebulun a prince, Eli-zaphan the son of Parnach. 26 And of the tribe of the children of Issachar a prince, Paltiel the son of Azzan. 27 And of the tribe of the children of Asher a prince, Ahihud the son of Shelomi. 28 And of the tribe of the children of Naphtali a prince, Pedahel the son of Ammihud. 29 These are they whom the LORD commanded to divide the inheritance unto the children of Israel in the land of Canaan.'

These are not the men mentioned last week in the census. Those were leaders for the wilderness. Now it is more military and wiser leaders being chosen for the division of the land.

35: 1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying: 2 'Command the children of Israel, that they give unto the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in; and open land round about the cities shall ye give unto the Levites. 3 And the cities shall they have to dwell in; and their open land shall be for their cattle, and for their substance, and for all their beasts. 4 And the open land about the cities, which ye shall give unto the Levites, shall be from the wall of the city and outward a thousand cubits round about. 5 And ye shall measure without the city for the east side two thousand cubits, and for the south side two thousand cubits, and for the west side two thousand cubits, and for the north side two thousand cubits, the city being in the midst. This shall be to them the open land about the cities.

From here we learn that the Leviim were to have very small portions in cities and the border of the cities is 2000 cubits aka Amos which is according to my elbow to finger tip 900 meters and according to the larger value of the Chazon Ish one kilometer. That is the Techum (border) for Shabbos.

6 And the cities which ye shall give unto the Levites, they shall be the six cities of refuge, which ye shall give for the manslayer to flee thither; and beside them ye shall give forty and two cities. 7 All the cities which ye shall give to the Levites shall be forty and eight cities: them shall ye give with the open land about them. 8 And concerning the cities which ye shall give of the possession of the children of Israel, from the many ye shall take many, and from the few ye shall take few; each tribe according to its inheritance which it inherits shall give of its cities unto the Levites.'
…26 But if the manslayer shall at any time go beyond the border of his city of refuge, whither he flees; 27 and the avenger of blood find him without the border of his city of refuge, and the avenger of blood slay the manslayer; there shall be no blood guiltiness for him; 28 because he must remain in his city of refuge until the death of the high priest; but after the death of the high priest the manslayer may return into the land of his possession.

If the Cohain HaGadol was a young man, the manslaughterer could stay in the city for years and if very elderly a short time. It was said that if the Cohain HaGadol became Tumay for any reason, they would take a very old substitute so that when he died, the manslaughterers could go home. WHY THE DEATH OF THE COHAIN HAGDOL? For the Cohain should have prayed for safety of the people of the land.

36: 1 And the heads of the fathers' houses of the family of the children of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, came near, and spoke before Moses, and before the princes, the heads of the fathers' houses of the children of Israel; 2 and they said: 'The LORD commanded my lord to give the land for inheritance by lot to the children of Israel; and my lord was commanded by the LORD to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother unto his daughters. 3 And if they be married to any of the sons of the other tribes of the children of Israel, then will their inheritance be taken away from the inheritance of our fathers, and will be added to the inheritance of the tribe whereunto they shall belong; so will it be taken away from the lot of our inheritance. … 8 And every daughter, that possess an inheritance in any tribe of the children of Israel, shall be wife unto one of the family of the tribe of her father, that the children of Israel may possess every man the inheritance of his fathers. 9 So shall no inheritance remove from one tribe to another tribe; for the tribes of the children of Israel shall cleave each one to its own inheritance.'

If a person from tribe one gave his daughter an inheritance from his tribe, his granddaughters would have to marry within the tribe so that they would not pass it on to another tribe but if they married out of the tribe they would not pass on the inheritance to their husbands.

10 Even as the LORD commanded Moses, so did the daughters of Zelophehad. 11 For Mahlah, Tirzah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, were married unto their father's brothers' sons. 12 They were married into the families of the sons of Manasseh the son of Joseph, and their inheritance remained in the tribe of the family of their father. 13 These are the commandments and the ordinances, which the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses unto the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.

The 15 Second Lecture by Rabbi Y. Tilles

Rabbi Yitzchak Zilberstein relates about the previous Bobover Rebbe, Rabbi Shlomo Halberstam, that he was a wellspring of sensitivity for all Jews, and how he was able to overcome any feelings of anger and hurt in order to pursue peace. His activities during and after World War II saved many Jews, both physically and spiritually. However, as it goes with great people, they will inevitably have detractors- people who are filled with envy and seek glory.
Shortly after the Bobover Rebbe came to America, a local rabbi who felt threatened by the Bobover Rebbe's activities on behalf of world Jewry, strongly criticized the Rebbe, and personally attacked his character. The Bobover Rebbe did not respond to the attack.
Eventually, the slanderous remarks became humiliating. The Rebbe summoned all of his chasidim to assemble in his Bais Medrash [study hall & synagogue]. The large shul was filled to capacity; everyone had crammed in to hear the Rebbe's response to the insults that had been launched at him.
The Bobover Rebbe entered the Bais Medrash, ascended to the front of the Holy Ark where the Torah scrolls are kept, and after kissing the outer curtain, turned to the people gathered there. He said, "I am declaring to everyone assembled here, as I stand in front of the Holy Ark, that I absolutely forbid anyone from battling on my behalf! My honor is my honor, and it will remain my honor, but only if everyone acts appropriately and does not take sides. Whoever does not obey me has no place in my Bais Medrash!"

Having spoken for a total of fifteen seconds, the Rebbe descended the podium and left the shul.
A few hours later, the Rebbe asked his attendant to take him to the attacking rabbi's home. By then, word of the Rebbe's response had already spread throughout the community. The Rebbe arrived at the rabbi's house and knocked on the door.
The Rabbi answered the door, and when he realized who was standing before him, his face turned white. The Bobover Rebbe understood that words were not necessary -- it was action that was needed. He took the rabbi in both his arms, hugged him and kissed him on the cheek.
Then he said, "Dear Rabbi, you may go to any one of my Chassidim and they will attest to the fact that I have no bad feelings towards you at all. Just as we were once friends, we will continue to remain friends!"
The rabbi was a changed person as a result that encounter, and the attacks stopped. The Bobover Rebbe corrected the situation by expressing his love for a fellow Jew instead of responding with anger, even though there was great reason for him to get angry.
Rav Zilberstein notes that R. Shlomo of Bobov's yahrzeit is on Rosh Chodesh Av, which is the same yahrzeit as Aharon HaKohen, the brother of Moses and the first High Priest. This is significant because both Aharon and the Bobover exemplified the dictum of Hillel the Elder (Avos 1:12), "Love peace and pursue peace…". They each possessed a love for all Jews and strongly desired to promote peace and harmony within the collective Jewish people.

Biographical note:
Rabbi Shlomo (ben Benzion) Halberstam of Bobov, [5667 - 1 Av 5760 (1907 - August 2000),] survived the Holocaust along with only 300 chasidim, succeeding his father who was among those martyred. Settling in Manhattan and then different locations in Brooklyn, he served as the third rebbe in the Bobover dynasty for over 50 years, rebuilding Bobov to even more thousands than his father had before the war. In addition to being wise and pious, he was noted for his commitment to not taking sides in disputes. Interestingly, he passed away on the same Hebrew date as Aharon the first High Priest, who was the first Jew to be known for "loving peace and pursuing peace" (see Avot 1:12).
Connections (2) - Seasonal:
* Rosh Chodesh Menachem-Av (Friday) is the yahrzeit of the Bobover Rebbe (and of Aharon HaKohen);
* This week we start this year's 3rd cycle of Shabbat Perkei Avos study with chapter 1, which is referenced in the story.
Video:
Gaze at face of Rebbe Shlomo of Bobov at the beginning of the video, and then from 20:00 to 23:00 you can see him dancing in front of the bride, then with the groom, and then in a circle with family members and select other guests.

Two months ago Art Scroll came out with a new book by Rabbi Yitzchak Zilberstein describing Shalom Beis and how the great Torah Giants treated their wives with respect. I completed reading it last week. Example. Rebbetzin Feinstein did not speak English and shopping was hard for her. Rav Moshe went every week with her shopping and acted as a translator. Another Gadol made tea each morning for his wife and brought it to her in bed to help her start her day. The name of the books is: The Joyful Jewish Home.

Perhaps it is best that my IDF Medical Services Unprepared story is not ready yet. Next week Tisha B’Av is perhaps more appropriate for one to mourn the lack of preparedness.

From Diane Bederman. The #MeTOO movement is always busy. Many well-known people have been taken down.
The PM of Canada is a self described Feminist. Women should be believed-except when the accusation is against him.
He was accused 18 years ago of assaulting a female reporter. It was reported then but remained quiet until someone chose to share. There are those who suggest that as the woman, the victim, does not want to talk anymore that Trudeau should be left alone.
But Trudeau is no normal "abuser" because of his statements and he has thrown other men under the bus for sexual misconduct.
Any other famous man, this story would be everywhere and calls for an inquiry would be screaming from the headlines. It is left to Conservative bloggers to speak.
