Parsha Mikeitz, story, after the blog good advice

The soul of Yoel HaCohain ben Henya came to rest. Please remove him from the prayer list.

Prayers for Aryeh Leib ben Chaya Henza for two weeks undergoing heart procedure.

Parsha Mikeitz

The redemption of G-D is in a twinkling of an eye. Two years have passed since the god-king Pharaoh released the chamberlain from prison. It is again Pharaoh’s birthday and dreams on this day portend what the future will hold. Pharaoh is Egypt (Mitzrayim).

41:1 And it came to pass at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh dreamed: and, behold, he stood by the river. 2 And, behold, there came up out of the river seven kine, well-favored and fat-fleshed; and they fed in the reed-grass. 3 And, behold, seven other kine came up after them out of the river, ill-favored and lean-fleshed; and stood by the other kine upon the brink of the river. 4 And the ill-favored and lean-fleshed kine did eat up the seven well-favored and fat kine. So Pharaoh awoke. 5 And he slept and dreamed a second time: and, behold, seven ears of corn came up upon one stalk, rank and good. 6 And, behold, seven ears, thin and blasted with the east wind, sprung up after them. 7 And the thin ears swallowed up the seven rank and full ears. And Pharaoh awoke, and, behold, it was a dream. 8 And it came to pass in the morning that his spirit was troubled; and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt, and all the wise men thereof; and Pharaoh told them his dream; but there was none that could interpret them unto Pharaoh.

Talmud Berachos states that a dream that repeats itself is from HASHEM and true.

9 Then spoke the chief butler unto Pharaoh, saying: 'I make mention of my faults this day: 10 Pharaoh was wroth with his servants, and put me in the ward of the house of the captain of the guard, me and the chief baker. 11 And we dreamed a dream in one night, I and he; we dreamed each man according to the interpretation of his dream. 12 And there was with us there a young man, a Hebrew, servant to the captain of the guard; and we told him, and he interpreted to us our dreams; to each man according to his dream he did interpret.

There was a law in Mitzrayim that stated a young man, a foreigner and a slave could not be Prime Minister. But a god-king can amend the law with a decree and ordinary men can’t.

13 And it came to pass, as he interpreted to us, so it was: I was restored unto mine office, and he was hanged.' 14 Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon. And he shaved himself, and changed his raiment, and came in unto Pharaoh. 15 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph: 'I have dreamed a dream, and there is none that can interpret it; and I have heard say of thee, that when thou hear a dream thou canst interpret it.' 16 And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying: 'It is not in me; God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace.'

In last week’s Parsha G-D did not appear but this week, Yosef makes sure to mention G-D.

17 And Pharaoh spoke unto Joseph: 'In my dream, behold, I stood upon the brink of the river. 18 And, behold, there came up out of the river seven kine, fat-fleshed and well-favored; and they fed in the reed-grass. … 21 And when they had eaten them up, it could not be known that they had eaten them; but they were still ill-favored as at the beginning. So I awoke. 22 And I saw in my dream, and, behold, seven ears came up upon one stalk, full and good. 23 And, behold, seven ears, withered, thin, and blasted with the east wind, sprung up after them. 24 And the thin ears swallowed up the seven good ears. And I told it unto the magicians; but there was none that could declare it to me.' 25 And Joseph said unto Pharaoh: 'The dream of Pharaoh is one; what God is about to do He hath declared unto Pharaoh.

Yosef recognized a repeating dream with the theme prosperity and then famine and the number seven throughout the dream.

26 The seven good kine are seven years; and the seven good ears are seven years: the dream is one. 27 And the seven lean and ill-favored kine that came up after them are seven years, and also the seven empty ears blasted with the east wind; they shall be seven years of famine. 28 That is the thing which I spoke unto Pharaoh: what God is about to do He hath shown unto Pharaoh. 29 Behold, there come seven years of great plenty throughout all the land of Egypt. 30 And there shall arise after them seven years of famine; and all the plenty shall be forgotten in the land of Egypt; and the famine shall consume the land; 31 and the plenty shall not be known in the land by reason of that famine which follows; for it shall be very grievous. 32 And for that the dream was doubled unto Pharaoh twice, it is because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass. 33 Now therefore let Pharaoh look out a man discreet and wise, and set him over the land of Egypt. 34 Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint overseers over the land, and take up the fifth part of the land of Egypt in the seven years of plenty. 35 And let them gather all the food of these good years that come, and lay up corn under the hand of Pharaoh for food in the cities, and let them keep it. 36 And the food shall be for a store to the land against the seven years of famine, which shall be in the land of Egypt; that the land perish not through the famine.'

Yosef supplies the interpretation to the dream, the problem for the future, and how to physically deal with the problem.

37 And the thing was good in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of all his servants. 38 And Pharaoh said unto his servants: 'Can we find such a one as this, a man in whom the spirit of God is?' 39 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph: 'Forasmuch as God hath shown thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou. 40 Thou shalt be over my house, and according unto thy word shall all my people be ruled; only in the throne will I be greater than thou.' 41 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph: 'See, I have set thee over all the land of Egypt.' 42 And Pharaoh took off his signet ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph's hand, and arrayed him in vestures of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck. 43 And he made him to ride in the second chariot which he had; and they cried before him: 'Abrech'; and he set him over all the land of Egypt.

Abrech or Av bend the knee aka bow towards the Prime Minister.

44 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph: 'I am Pharaoh, and without thee shall no man lift up his hand or his foot in all the land of Egypt.' 45 And Pharaoh called Joseph's name Zaphenath-paneah; and he gave him to wife Asenath the daughter of Poti-phera priest of On. And Joseph went out over the land of Egypt.

Unlike the other ministers to Pharaoh in his chamber, Yosef does not enter there but runs the government. He is now about to start a massive building and agricultural project.

46 And Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt. 47 And in the seven years of plenty the earth brought forth in heaps. 48 And he gathered up all the food of the seven years which were in the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities; the food of the field, which was round about every city, laid he up in the same. 49 And Joseph laid up corn as the sand of the sea, very much, until they left off numbering; for it was without number.

Yosef made sure that the roads were good from bringing in of the grain and in the future for the outgoing grain. He built stowage silos throughout the land. The numbering system at that time went into the thousands and perhaps hundreds of thousands and then thousands of thousands instead of our million and billions perhaps the amount was in trillions which is beyond the capability of an average person to handle.

Yosef had to have a system of knowing the logistics of how many silos were full in each city. He probably also used the FIFO (First in first out) System for distribution. Records, clerks and army or police had to be in place for handling hungry crowds.

50 And unto Joseph were born two sons before the year of famine came, whom Asenath the daughter of Poti-phera priest of On bore unto him. 51 And Joseph called the name of the first-born Manasseh: 'for God hath made me forget all my toil, and all my father's house.' 52 And the name of the second called him Ephraim: 'for God hath made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.'

I have gotten rid of my affliction and am now a fruitful father.

53 And the seven years of plenty, that was in the land of Egypt, came to an end. 54 And the seven years of famine began to come, according as Joseph had said; and there was famine in all lands; but in all the land of Egypt there was bread. 55 And when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread; and Pharaoh said unto all the Egyptians: 'Go unto Joseph [Zaphenath-paneah]; what he says to you, do.' 56 And the famine was over all the face of the earth; and Joseph opened all the storehouses, and sold unto the Egyptians; and the famine was sore in the land of Egypt. 57 And all countries came into Egypt to Joseph to buy corn; because the famine was sore in all the earth.

HASHEM brought in plenty of rain and good climate during the 7 years of plenty and now a reversal of the weather patter due to physical phenomena that HE brought on.

42:1 Now Jacob saw that there was corn in Egypt, and Jacob said unto his sons: 'Why do ye look one upon another?'

Corn meaning grain. The word was used to describe Maize. It stuck in the States and became a new grain food that did not exist in Europe.

6 And Joseph was the governor over the land; he it was that sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph's brethren came, and bowed down to him with their faces to the earth. 7 And Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself strange unto them, and spoke roughly with them; and he said unto them: 'Whence come ye?' And they said: 'From the land of Canaan to buy food.' 8 And Joseph knew his brethren, but they knew him not. 9 And Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them, and said unto them: 'Ye are spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.'

The dreams were 20 years before and years as a slave-servant, being put in jail, Prime Minister, marriage and family had put the dream far behind him.

10 And they said unto him: 'Nay, my lord, but to buy food are thy servants come. 11 We are all one man's sons; we are upright men, thy servants are no spies.' 12 And he said unto them: 'Nay, but to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.' 13 And they said: 'We thy servants are twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and, behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is not.' … 36 And Jacob their father said unto them: 'Me have ye bereaved of my children: Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and ye will take Benjamin away; upon me are all these things come.' 37 And Reuben spoke unto his father, saying: 'Thou shalt slay my two sons, if I bring him not to thee; deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him back to thee.' 38 And he said: 'My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he only is left; if harm befall him by the way in which ye go, then will ye bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.

Yacov wants to protect Benyamin at all costs even with the loss of Shimon as a prisoner.

43:1 And the famine was sore in the land. 2 And it came to pass, when they had eaten up the corn which they had brought out of Egypt, that their father said unto them: 'Go again, buy us a little food.' 3 And Judah spoke unto him, saying: 'The man did earnestly forewarn us, saying: Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you. 4 If thou wilt send our brother with us, we will go down and buy thee food; 5 but if thou wilt not send him, we will not go down, for the man said unto us: Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.' 6 And Israel said: 'Wherefore dealt ye so ill with me, as to tell the man whether ye had yet a brother?' 7 And they said: 'The man asked straight concerning ourselves, and concerning our kindred, saying: Is your father yet alive? have ye another brother? and we told him according to the tenor of these words; could we in any wise know that he would say: Bring your brother down?'

He was tough on us but wanted us to produce our brother as proof of our honesty.

8 And Judah said unto Israel his father: 'Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go, that we may live, and not die, both we, and thou, and also our little ones. 9 I will be surety for him; of my hand shalt thou require him; if I bring him not unto thee, and set him before thee, then let me bear the blame for ever.

I will protect him on my life and at the cost of my life and even my kingship. Reuven has offered Yacov to kill his grandchildren which was a hair-brain scheme. Yehuda also offered his place in heaven if he did not return Benyamin.

10 For except we had lingered, surely we had now returned a second time.' … 16 And when Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house: 'Bring the men into the house, and kill the beasts, and prepare the meat; for the men shall dine with me at noon.' 17 And the man did as Joseph bade; and the man brought the men into Joseph's house. 18 And the men were afraid, because they were brought into Joseph's house; and they said: 'Because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time are we brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, and fall upon us, and take us for bondmen, and our asses.'

They were afraid of this Egyptian Minister who had the power of life and death and could enslave them as Mida Knegged Mida for selling Yosef. Yitzchak was 60 years older than Yacov and lived to 180 years. Yacov is 130 as it is written in next week’s Parsha when he greets Pharaoh. So Yitzchak would have had to pass at least 8 years before the famine started. Therefore, Yacov is our “old man”. It is also a common expression in US English for a fellow to say about his father “my old man”.

28 And they said: 'Thy servant our father is well, he is yet alive.' And they bowed the head, and made obeisance. 29 And he lifted up his eyes, and saw Benjamin his brother, his mother's son, and said: 'Is this your youngest brother of whom ye spoke unto me?' And he said: 'God be gracious unto thee, my son.'

Yosef had to break-down and cry at the sight of his full brother Benyamin.

30 And Joseph made haste; for his heart yearned toward his brother; and he sought where to weep; and he entered into his chamber, and wept there. 31 And he washed his face, and came out; and he refrained himself, and said: 'Set on bread.' 32 And they set on for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians, that did eat with him, by themselves; because the Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an abomination unto the Egyptians.

How could a well versed Minister sink to this level to eat with these abominable Hebrews? But, he is close to god-Pharaoh.

33 And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth; and the men marveled one with another. 34 And portions were taken unto them from before him; but Benjamin's portion was five times so much as any of theirs. And they drank, and were merry with him.

They did not get jealous of him.

44:1 And he commanded the steward of his house, saying: 'Fill the men's sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man's money in his sack's mouth. 2 And put my goblet, the silver goblet, in the sack's mouth of the youngest, and his corn money.' And he did according to the word that Joseph had spoken. 3 As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away, they and their asses. 4 And when they were gone out of the city, and were not yet far off, Joseph said unto his steward: 'Up, follow after the men; and when thou dost overtake them, say unto them: Wherefore have ye rewarded evil for good? 5 Is not this it in which my lord drinks, and whereby he indeed divines? ye have done evil in so doing.' 6 And he overtook them, and he spoke unto them these words. 7 And they said unto him: 'Wherefore speaks my lord such words as these? Far be it from thy servants that they should do such a thing. 8 Behold, the money, which we found in our sacks' mouths, we brought back unto thee out of the land of Canaan; how then should we steal out of thy lord's house silver or gold? 9 With whomsoever of thy servants it be found, let him die, and we also will be my lord's bondmen.'

Such a hasty talker like Yacov. By this, Yacov accidently brought about the death of Rachel.

10 And he said: 'Now also let it be according unto your words: he with whom it is found shall be my bondman; and ye shall be blameless.'

These Shepherd Bumpkins did not realize that after they found their money the first time, that the Egyptian Minister could pull a trick on them. I believe that according to the Medrash he told each brother “through my divination I see that you Reuven rearranged your father’s bed, Shimon and Levy killed all the males of Schem after the rape of Dina. When he got to Benyamin he said your mother died because she stole the god of Lavan.

11 Then they hastened, and took down every man his sack to the ground, and opened every man his sack. 12 And he searched, beginning at the eldest, and leaving off at the youngest; and the goblet was found in Benjamin's sack. 13 And they rent their clothes, and laded every man his ass, and returned to the city.

Each one had gotten a garment as a gift from Yosef when they came to diner but Benyamin got five. – Medrash Rabbah.

14 And Judah and his brethren came to Joseph's house, and he was yet there; and they fell before him on the ground. 15 And Joseph said unto them: 'What deed is this that ye have done? know ye not that such a man as I will indeed divine?'

BACKWARDS MOSHIACH by Rabbi Pinchas Winston https://torah.org/torah-portion/perceptions-5779-miketz/

And Yosef said to them, “What is this deed that you have committed? Don't you know that a person like me practices divination?"
HERE’S AN INTERESTING point. The last word of the Hebrew verse is “komoni,” spelled, Chof-Mem-Nun-Yud, which means, “like me.” If you count two letters to the right of the Mem of “komoni,” you will arrive at the third letter of the next word, “ahsher,” and the letter “Shin.” Count another two letters to the right and you will end up in the next word, “ish,” and the letter Yud. And finally, count another
two letters to the right and this will bring you to the fourth last word of the verse, and the letter Ches. Combined, the four letters spell, “Moshiach” in reverse.

There is no need to go into the statistical odds of that “code” occurring, but I WILL just tell you that it is rare. If you want to know HOW rare, find someone who can work it out with you. But, before you do, make sure to explain the following as well. It is part of what makes this “find” so interesting. The Hebrew words for “divination” are, “nachaish yenachaish.” Not coincidentally, the root letters of these words are the same letters as for the word “snake,” which is “nachash,” spelled, Nun-Ches-Shin. Also not coincidentally is that the Gematria of “nachash” and “Moshiach” are the same, 358. As the rabbis teach, it was the original nachash who caused us to go into exile when it convinced Adam and Chava to eat from the Aitz HaDa’as Tov v’Ra—the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. It will be
its antithesis, Moshiach, who will make it possible for us to return there.
That was Point One. Point Two is that this reversal of the encoded word “Moshiach” perfectly describes Yosef’s situation. Yosef’s brothers had looked at him as if he was as bad as the snake that had steered the first man and woman in the wrong direction back in Paradise. They sold him into slavery to protect the future Jewish people from any damage he might possibly do. Yosef ended up
being their “Moshiach.”

It was THE classic case of: The stone despised by the builders became the cornerstone. (Tehillim 118:22) The verse doesn’t just say that the stone was overlooked. It was DESPISED, you know, thoroughly HATED. And, we’re not talking about secular people hating religious people, or vice-versa. That’s obvious. This verse is talking RELIGIOUS people hating OTHER religious people. Remarkable.
The big question is, of course, how does that happen? The answer to THAT question, conveniently, is in the NEXT verse:
This was from God; it is wondrous in our eyes. (Tehillim 118:23) There are many ways to describe the battle for life. Probably the BEST way is as a fight to remain appreciative of even the smaller miracles in life. These are the ones to which we refer every day,
three times a day, in the Shemonah Esray, in “Modim”: We thankfully acknowledge that You are God our God and God of our fathers forever. You are the strength of our life, the shield of our salvation in every generation. We will give thanks to You and recount Your praise, evening, morning and noon, for our lives which are committed into Your hand, for our souls which are entrusted to You, for YOUR MIRACLES WHICH ARE WITH US DAILY, and for Your continual wonders and beneficences. You are the Beneficent One, for Your mercies never cease; the Merciful One, for Your kindnesses never end; for we always place our hope in You.

Just ask yourself how many times you really feel much appreciation when you say this Bracha. I mean REAL appreciation. It’s so easy to “fly” right through it because we simply do not realize how fortunate we are to have all the things we do in life until, of course, something goes wrong. The Ksav Sofer explains that this is why the Talmud says that one who says Hallel EVERY DAY, which we started saying now for Chanukah, blasphemes God. BLASPHEMES GOD? PRAISES GOD the Talmud should say!

No, says the Ksav Sofer, BLASPHEMES God. This is because Hallel praises God for the large, OVERT miracles that have happened periodically throughout history. If you praise God for THOSE everyday, then you basically say that the smaller, COVERT miracles don’t count or matter to you. That’s an aspect of blasphemy, says the Ksav Sofer. It is no coincidence that people who do not appreciate every last gift in life tend to be arrogant as well, or vice versa. They don’t have to be obnoxiously arrogant, but just a little too self-believing,
which does not sit well with the trait of humility. And, it is HUMILITY that allows us to see life as God does, and THAT is when we start seeing Divine “cornerstones” as Divine cornerstones.

So, what does this have to do with Chanukah, which celebrates the BIG miracle? Well, does it? Yes and no. It DOES celebrate a HUGE miracle, but part of that celebration is because of what it means about the smaller miracle: the finding of the jar of oil. Had the Chashmonaim “only” won the war, Chanukah would not have become a national holiday. Had they “only” found the undefiled jar of oil, they would also not have declared a national holiday. But, when the oil burned for seven extra days, OVERTLY miraculously, it revealed, retroactively, that even the smaller covert miracles are HUGE AND OVERT, if you allow yourself to remain sensitive to
them.

In the end, this is what the oil-miracle was about. It was God’s way of saying, in a prophetess time,  “Just as I performed a miracle for you with the oil, I perform miracles for you ALL the time, whether you can see them or not. TRUST Me, even when you feel like I’m not there. I AM, and ALWAYS care about you.Rabbi Pinchas Winston Shlita www.torah.org

16 And Judah said: 'What shall we say unto my lord? what shall we speak? or how shall we clear ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants; behold, we are my lord's bondmen, both we, and he also in whose hand the cup is found.'

Yehuda accepts the blame for it is he that instituted the sale of Yosef with his idea. Now he is about to show that he is willing to pay for it. Next Parsha we shall see that his atonement is complete and Yosef can now forgive them.

17 And he said: 'Far be it from me that I should do so; the man in whose hand the goblet is found, he shall be my bondman; but as for you, get you up in peace unto your father.'

Yosef wants to save Benyamin from the same fate he had. The ball is now in Yehuda’s court and what will he do with his promise to his father now?

Notice: There may be only the story next week without the Parsha Commentary as I have a hectic week before me.

Discovered in Alabama by Rabbi Y. Tilles I may have brought down this story already

A young man named Avraham ("Avrumel") Greenbaum lost his entire family in the Holocaust. After the war, he came to America and wanted nothing to do with Judaism. He changed his name to Aaron Green, moved to Alabama and married a woman there, who, miraculously, was Jewish.
The day his oldest son Jeffrey turned thirteen, they were not going to celebrate his bar mitzvah. Instead, Aaron decided to recognize the day by taking Jeffrey to the mall and buying him anything he wanted there.
When they went into a big electronics store and were browsing, Jeffrey's eye caught something in an antique shop across the way. He was mesmerized. He couldn't take his eyes off what he had seen.
He told his father, "I don't want anything from the electronics store. I want to go across to the antique shop." When they got there, the boy pointed to an old wooden menorah and said, "That's what I want for my bar-mitzvah."
His father couldn't believe it. He was letting his child buy anything he wanted in the whole mall and this is what he was choosing? He tried to talk him out of it, but couldn't.
Aaron asked the shop-owner the price of the menorah. To his surprise, the man replied "Sorry, that's not for sale."
Aaron said, "What do you mean? This is a store." He offered a lot of money for it.
Again the owner refused, this time explaining, "I found out the history of this menorah. A man constructed it during the war and it took him months to gather the wood. It survived, but he did not. It's going to be a collector's item. It's not for sale."
Meanwhile, Jeffrey kept telling his father, "That's what I want. All I want is the menorah." So Aaron Green kept offering more money until the owner finally agreed to sell.
The boy was so excited. He took the menorah up to his room and played with it every day. One day the parents heard a crash from Jeffrey's room. They ran upstairs and saw the menorah shattered to pieces. The father yelled at his son for being so careless, as he paid so much money for it.
Afterwards, Aaron felt bad about his reaction. He suggested to his son, "Let's try to glue it back together."
While holding one of the pieces, the father noticed a piece of paper wedged inside. He pulled it out and started reading. Tears welled up in his eyes and soon after he fainted.
His family threw water on him and revived him. "What happened?", they asked.
He replied, "Let me read you this letter. It was written in Yiddish, so I'll translate.
"To whoever finds this menorah, I want you to know that I constructed it not knowing if I would ever have the opportunity to light it. Who knows if I will live till Chanukah to see it being kindled? In all probability, going through this war, I will not. But if Providence brings this menorah to your hands, you who are reading this letter, promise me you will light it for me and for us, my family, and those who gave their lives to serve G-d Al-mighty."
Aaron Green then looked up at his family and, in a choked-up voice with tears still in his eyes, said, "The letter is signed by my father."
They were all speechless. That family recognized the Divine Providence involved and they returned to living their lives according to Torah and mitzvot. How could they not! The hand of G-d was undeniable, taking a menorah from Europe and bringing it back to the family in a remote mall in Alabama, inspiring them to return to Torah-true Judaism.
