Parsha
Yisro always falls before or on the Yahrzeit of my father of blessed memory
Felix ben Yitzchak, who passed away 51 years ago. This issue is dedicated to
his memory.
Left over from last week’s Parsha Ha
Mann. 16:17 And the children of Israel did so, and gathered some
more, some less. 18 And when they did
mete it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that
gathered little had no lack; they gathered every man according to his eating. 19 And Moses said unto them: 'Let no man leave of it
till the morning.' 20 Notwithstanding
they hearkened not unto Moses; but some of them left of it until the morning,
and it bred worms, and rotted; and Moses was wroth with them.
They were told not to hoard but they disobeyed
like naughty children.
21 And they gathered it morning by
morning, every man according to his eating; and as the sun waxed hot, it
melted. 22 And it came to pass that on
the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one; and
all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses.
After the bawling out in the middle of the week,
they went to Moshe to check regarding Shabbos Kodesh about gathering the Mann.
23 And he said unto them: 'This is
that which the LORD hath spoken: To-morrow is a solemn rest, a holy Sabbath
unto the LORD. Bake that which ye will bake, and seethe that which ye will
seethe; and all that remains over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.'
Since it is an Av Melacha to gather on Shabbos,
one can prepare on Friday. This time because of Shabbos, the leftover quantity
of Mann will not rot.
24 And they laid it up till the
morning, as Moses bade; and it did not rot, neither was there any worm therein.
25 And Moses said: 'Eat that to-day; for
to-day is a Sabbath unto the LORD; to-day ye shall not find it in the field.
This was one of the miracles of Shabbos that the
file on Shabbos and eating was not allowed to be stored in the week, but for
Shabbos an extra ‘Loaf’ or Omer was stored away.
26 Six days ye shall gather it; but
on the seventh day is the Sabbath, in it there shall be none.' 27 And it came to pass on the seventh day, that there
went out some of the people to gather, and they found none.
For heaven they were shown and forced to observe
the holiness of Shabbos.
28 And the LORD said unto Moses:
'How long refuse ye to keep My commandments and My laws?
Above Moshe was angry with the people. Now the
L-RD is very angry because of hoarding but now HASHEM is angry because of
Shabbos Kodesh.
29 See that the LORD hath given you
the Sabbath; therefore, He gives you on the sixth day the bread of two days;
abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh
day.'
Let no man search outside the camp for Mann will
come double on Friday and therefore stay within the Eruv of your encampment.
30 So the people rested on the
seventh day.
Just as they rested, so should we rest each
Shabbos.
Parsha Yisro
18:1 Now Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses' father-in-law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel His people, how that the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt.
Midian had learned hospitality from Avraham Avinu and was on the trade route. Yisro was kept informed of the happenings in Mitzrayim by traders and travelers through his area. [Remember that Yisro 81 years prior was an advisor to Pharaoh and may have been constantly informed in case his advice was needed.
2 And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, took Zipporah, Moses' wife, after he had sent her away, 3 and her two sons; of whom the name of the one was Gershom; for he said: 'I have been a stranger in a strange land';
The root is Ger or stranger-outsider but remember that Ger-Toshav or Ger-Tzeddek are citizens and the later can make a Minyan for prayers and is kosher for marriage. This is different from foreigner or complete outsider from citizenship or marriage.
4 and the name of the other was Eliezer: 'for the God of my father was my help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh.'
Literally G-D is my help.
5 And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife unto Moses into the wilderness where he was encamped, at the mount of God; 6 and he said unto Moses: 'I thy father-in-law Jethro am coming unto thee, and thy wife, and her two sons with her.' 7 And Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and bowed down and kissed him; and they asked each other of their welfare; and they came into the tent.
Moshe was a king now and had guards. Yisro has to identify himself and Moshe comes to greet him.
8 And Moses told his father-in-law all that the LORD had done unto Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel's sake, all the travail that had come upon them by the way, and how the LORD delivered them.
At the dinner table he told of all the happenings and miracles. He also did if for his young sons even if the youngest was too young to understand as the Neshama hears of the Kiddush HASHEM.
9 And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which the LORD had done to Israel, in that He had delivered them out of the hand of the Egyptians. 10 And Jethro said: 'Blessed be the LORD, who hath delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh; who hath delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians. 11 Now I know that the LORD is greater than all gods; yea, for that they dealt proudly against them.'
Yisro knew HASHEM and the mountain of HASHEM. However, Yisro was uncertain of all the gods who was the true G-D? He was a priest and worshipped all so that he and his section of Midian would have a place in heaven. However, now he was certain and knew that HASHEM HU HAELOKIM!
12 And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, took a burnt-offering and sacrifices for God; and Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses' father-in-law before God.
How could the elders and Moshe eat of the slaughter and sacrifice of a non Ben Yisrael Priest? There is a chapter in Meseches Chullin called “Anyone one can slaughter with the exception of a lunatic, deaf-mute and child.” This would include a non-Jewish Servant trained in how to slaughter with a properly sharpened and checked knife. But did Yisro know kosher slaughter? The answer is that Midian came from Avraham and had traditions dating back to him.
13 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people; and the people stood about Moses from the morning unto the evening. 14 And when Moses' father-in-law saw all that he did to the people, he said: 'What is this thing that you do to the people? Why do you sit by thyself alone, and all the people stand about thee from morning unto even?'
You are exhausting yourself and the people are wasting their time waiting in line.
15 And Moses said unto his father-in-law: 'Because the people come unto me to inquire of God; 16 when they have a matter, it cometh unto me; and I judge between a man and his neighbor, and I make them know the statutes of God, and His laws.' 17 And Moses' father-in-law said unto him: 'The thing that you do is not good. 18 Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee; for the thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone. 19 Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God be with thee: be thou for the people before God, and bring thou the causes unto God. 20 And thou shalt teach them the statutes and the laws, and shalt show them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do. 21 Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating unjust gain; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. 22 And let them judge the people at all seasons; and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge themselves; so shall they make it easier for thee and bear the burden with thee.
Not every question has to go before the Gadol HaDor or Chief Rabbi. It is enough that a person who is learned enough say for example that it is forbidden to pick fruit on Shabbos or that the time to bless on Tallis and Tephillin is from the time one can distinguish the color of green of a leek and sky blue in the morning until sundown.
23 If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people also shall go to their place in peace.'
There will be smaller lines and the questions more educated ones that have been filtered by learned Rabbis.
24 So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he had said. 25 And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. 26 And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves. 27 And Moses let his father-in-law depart; and he went his way into his own land.
Even though Yisro was an asset to Am Yisrael with his great wisdom and advice, Yisro was the Gadol of Midian and wanted to make a Kiddush HASHEM and teach his people Derech (ways of) HASHEM.
19:1 In the third month after the children of Israel were gone forth out of the land of Egypt, the same day came they into the wilderness of Sinai. 2 And when they were departed from Rephidim, and were come to the wilderness of Sinai, they encamped in the wilderness; and there Israel encamped before the mount.
The Pillar and Cloud remained steady and the Am stayed in one area for some time.
3 And Moses went up unto God, and the LORD called unto him out of the mountain, saying: 'Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel: 4 Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings, and brought you unto Myself. 5 Now therefore, if ye will hearken unto My voice indeed, and keep My covenant, then ye shall be Mine own treasure from among all peoples; for all the earth is Mine;
The big ‘IF’-if you harken to the Mitzvos, Chukkim V’ Mishpatim then you will be MINE.
6 and ye shall be unto Me a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.'
More than a light unto the Nations but a Kingdom of Priests.
7 And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and set before them all these words which the LORD commanded him. 8 And all the people answered together, and said: 'All that the LORD hath spoken we will do.' And Moses reported the words of the people unto the LORD.
We will do and we will listen. First we shall do the commandments without question.
9 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with thee, and may also believe thee forever.' And Moses told the words of the people unto the LORD. 10 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Go unto the people, and sanctify them to-day and to-morrow, and let them wash their garments, 11 and be ready against the third day; for the third day the LORD will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai. 12 And thou shalt set bounds unto the people round about, saying: Take heed to yourselves, that ye go not up into the mount, or touch the border of it; whosoever touches the mount shall be surely put to death;
The mountain is off limits for the ordinary Ben Yisrael and it shall be fenced in. Otherwise they will face the death penalty for desecration of the holy.
13 no hand shall touch him, but he shall surely be stoned, or shot through; whether it be beast or man, it shall not live; when the ram's horn sounds long, they shall come up to the mount.' 14 And Moses went down from the mount unto the people, and sanctified the people; and they washed their garments.
They shall bathe themselves and their garments to be pure.
15 And he said unto the people: 'Be ready against the third day; come not near a woman.'
Both men and women will refrain from relations for three days as the Semen can live in the womb three days and run out causing impurity in the woman.
16 And it came to pass on the third day, when it was morning, that there were thunders and lightnings and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of a horn exceeding loud; and all the people that were in the camp trembled. 17 And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount. 18 Now mount Sinai was altogether on smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire; and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly. 19 And when the voice of the horn waxed louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him by a voice. 20 And the LORD came down upon mount Sinai, to the top of the mount; and the LORD called Moses to the top of the mount; and Moses went up.
A fearsome display of thunder and lightning on or above the mountain. The people were in awe at this display that was extra-ordinary.
21 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Go down, charge the people, lest they break through unto the LORD to gaze, and many of them perish. 22 And let the priests also, that come near to the LORD, sanctify themselves, lest the LORD break forth upon them.'
Kal V’ Homer goes like this. If the Kal (easy one) like the Priests that can enter the Holy of Holies on Yom Kippur cannot come near, then the Homer (difficult one) the strangers to the service (Avoda) of the L-RD cannot come near.
23 And Moses said unto the LORD: 'The people cannot come up to mount Sinai; for thou didst charge us, saying: Set bounds about the mount, and sanctify it.' 24 And the LORD said unto him: 'Go, get thee down, and thou shalt come up, thou, and Aaron with thee; but let not the priests and the people break through to come up unto the LORD, lest He break forth upon them.'
Why Aaron? For Aaron is Cohain Gadol and is the only one capable of entering the Kodesh Kedoshim (Holy of Holies) on Yom Kippur.
25 So Moses went down unto the people, and told them.
This was the final warning at the end of the three day period of going up and down the mountain and warning the people.
20:1 And God spoke all these words, saying: 2 I am the LORD thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.
Before ME besides ME no son or even my manifestation in the Shechina shall be worshipped as separate. For everything is MY essence and emanates from ME.
3 Thou shalt not make unto thee a graven image, nor any manner of likeness, of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; 4 thou shalt not bow down unto them, nor serve them; for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate Me; 5 and showing mercy unto the thousandth generation of them that love Me and keep My commandments.
At the sea, the nation saw the DIVINE CHARIOT held up with beings with feet like calves. [Yechezkel Chapter 1] One of the four faces was Yacov and another a calf. From this came the mistake of the golden calf. The image was of what they physically saw in the Chariot but was forbidden.
6 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh His name in vain.
This is one reason why we try not to take oaths, swearing or vows in public. We try to take an oath of affirmation and say ble Neder (no vow). This keeps us from false swearing.
7
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 8 Six days shalt thou labor, and do
all thy work;
Not
ordinary work but Melaches Avoda we should not do. Meaning one of the 39
Melachos and their derivatives.
9 but
the seventh day is a Sabbath unto the LORD thy God, in it thou shalt not do any
manner of work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy man-servant, nor
thy maid-servant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates;
No
writing, erasing, cooking, harvesting, igniting an automobile, building an
electric circuit, and traveling even by foot outside of the Shabbos walking
limits around a town. (However, if one be town built up like Petach Tikva to
Rosh HaAyin or Nechalim or Nechalim to Kfar Saba, one could walk the entire
stretch. In the States the equivalent of walking from the East River to the end
of Queens, Lawrence Long Island until the area was not built up. The same would
be from parts of London or Paris as long as one did not have to cross a river
for the border would start by the river.)
10 for
in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is,
and rested on the seventh day; wherefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day, and
hallowed it.
Rested
meaning a relaxation of the Nefesh or all the 5 components of the soul being
renewed.
11 Honor
thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land which the
LORD thy God giveth thee.
Give
proper honor to your parents, grandparents and the elders or Rabbis of Yisrael
and you will live long.
12 Thou
shalt not murder.
No
matter how wicked your fellow Jew is, you have no right to murder him. However,
killing in self-defense or an enemy in war is permissible. For we cannot have
misplaced compassion and mercy for the cruel and the cruel will come and murder
us.
Thou
shalt not commit adultery.
Beside
all the problems with Maumzerim, there is a problem with a wholesome and pure
society. We are not animals like cats who will attack and conquer any female in
heat. We have the institution of holy matrimony. Remember that Adam and Chava
were created together. If one does not view his wife as his body or husband as
her other half, there is a solution for mistakes and it is called a divorce. A
woman is freed in two ways. Either by divorce or by the death of a husband.
Thou
shalt not steal.
Our
Rabbis interpret this not as robbery of property or money that is mentioned
later in the Torah. The Rabbis say this is stealing a human being for
enslavement or what we call today ‘human trafficking’.
Thou
shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
You
should tell the truth at all cost or shut-up if you are going to incriminate
yourself. For the Torah is Emmes. One who lies, stretches the truth (except for
making peace between husband and wife or disputing Jews) is violating this
Mitzvah. This is long before ‘love thy neighbor as thyself’.
13 Thou
shalt not covet thy neighbor's house; thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife,
nor his man-servant, nor his maid-servant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any
thing that is thy neighbor's.
Don’t
look at a wealthier neighbor like a socialist and want his wealth. Rather be
happy and rejoice for him. For in truth G-D gives you what HE determines are
for your needs and/or rewards. I can be happy with a small condominium or
modest house in Israel. I do not need a Mar Largo size property. I am happy
with my modest Shomer Shabbos wife and I do not need somebody who was a former
fashion model. My car takes me from my house to the Schul, gym or supermarket
and I do not need an expensive one or a limousine. The Sages in Perkei Avos
explained the definition of wealth. “Who is rich? One who is happy with his
portion.”
14 And
all the people perceived the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the voice of
the horn, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled,
and stood afar off. 15 And they said unto Moses: 'Speak thou with us, and we
will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die.' 16 And Moses said unto
the people: 'Fear not; for God is come to prove you, and that His fear may be
before you, that ye sin not.' 17 And the people stood afar off; but Moses drew
near unto the thick darkness where God was.
The
people hear only 2 of the Asera Dibros. Had they heard all 10 straightforward,
they never ever would have sinned.
18 And
the LORD said unto Moses: Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel: Ye
yourselves have seen that I have talked with you from heaven. 19 Ye shall not
make with Me--gods of silver, or gods of gold, ye shall not make unto you. 20
An altar of earth thou shalt make unto Me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy
burnt-offerings, and thy peace-offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen; in every
place where I cause My name to be mentioned I will come unto thee and bless
thee.
You
shall determine the holiness of the place whether a Synagogue, Beis Medrash or
Beis HaMikdash.
21 And if
thou make Me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stones; for if
thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast profaned it.
In
Meseches Berachos 45B Rabbi Elephant in his Shiur described the Mizbayach of
Brass in the Mishkan as being like a hollow mold and filled with dirt, sand and
rocks inside. www.dafyomi.org or www.e-daf.com
.
22
Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto Mine altar, that thy nakedness be not
uncovered thereon.
The
Cohanim will be required to wear pants so even the stones cannot ‘see’ their
nakedness.

Don’t Ask Twice Just Listen by
Rabbi Yerachmiel Tilles
The following story was related by
Rebbetzin Chaya-Mushka of blessed memory, wife of the Lubavitcher Rebbe:
There was a family, relatives of the
Lubavitcher Rebbe, who lived in the Boro Park section of Brooklyn. Whenever
they had a question for the Rebbe, they asked his wife, Rebbetzin Chaya-Mushka
Shneerson, and she passed the question on to the Rebbe. Afterwards, she related
the Rebbe's answer to the family.
One day, the Rebbetzin received a
phone call from that family that the mother was very sick and, after many tests
in the hospital, the doctors concluded that she needed surgery. They were
calling to ask for the Rebbe's consent and blessing for the operation.
When the Rebbetzin conveyed the message to the Rebbe, the Rebbe responded that they should not do the operation. The Rebbetzin told the family the Rebbe's answer, but a few days later, they called again. They said that the doctors said that because they refused the operation, her condition deteriorated and her life could be endangered. They asked whether she could ask the Rebbe again.
The Rebbetzin said that in Lubavitch you don't ask twice. "I consider myself a chasid of the Rebbe and I do as the chasidim do, so I cannot ask again," she said.
The family was distraught, so the Rebbetzin said that if the Rebbe came home and asked whether she had heard anything from the family, she was willing to repeat what they had told her, but she would not ask again.
When the Rebbe came home for supper, he asked the Rebbetzin whether she had heard from the family. She told the Rebbe what they had said and then added, "I'm not asking; I'm just telling you."
The Rebbe looked serious and after a pause he said, "I repeat, they should not operate!"
The Rebbetzin conveyed this clear answer to the family and a few days later they called again. They said that the doctors said her condition had deteriorated further and her life was in immediate danger. They were asked to sign that they took full responsibility for the woman and absolved the doctors and the hospital of any responsibility.
The Rebbetzin said, "The Rebbe said two times already not to operate."
When the Rebbe came home, the Rebbetzin told him the latest events and the Rebbe said, "Why don't they try medication?"
The Rebbetzin immediately called the family to tell them. They in turn mentioned it to the doctors, who laughed at them in response. "The rabbi knows better than we do about medicine? We say that only surgery can save her. It is definitely not a matter of medication."
The family believed the Rebbe and went from department to department, looking for a doctor who would understand them. Finally, they found a doctor who thought for a moment and then said, "I think I know which medication the Rebbe has in mind, and since I wear a white jacket and can go wherever I want, I will visit your mother and give her an injection and let's see what happens."
A few days later, the doctors said her condition had suddenly stabilized. They did not know what had happened, but she was no longer deteriorating. The doctor was optimistic and told the family that apparently he had used the medicine the Rebbe was thinking of. He gave the woman another injection and two days later the doctors who had been treating her admitted she had improved somewhat. Every so often, the doctor would come by and give her medication until she was out of danger and was released from the hospital.
The family kept in constant touch with the Rebbetzin. When the Rebbetzin told the Rebbe that the mother had returned home, the Rebbe said, "When they asked me about an operation, I saw that if they did it, she wouldn't make it off the operating table, which is why I adamantly opposed an operation. When they asked again, I thought the doctors would see that the family was adamantly opposed to an operation and would try medication. When I saw that they weren't thinking along those lines at all, I explicitly suggested medication."
The Rebbetzin related this and said that the Rebbe had added, "Now you see how important it is to listen to whatever we say, even when the experts say the opposite."

Do the Rebbes know everything? Here is another, similar story:
Once, someone asked the Rebbe Rayatz (Rabbi Yosef-Yitzchak Schneersohn), the Rebbe's predecessor, whether his son should travel or not and the Rebbe said "No." The son did not listen and boarded the ship. A few days into the voyage the ship sank.
After the week of mourning, the brokenhearted father came to the Rebbe and said, "If the Rebbe would have explained why he negated the trip, I am sure my son would have listened."
The Rebbe Rayatz replied, "Believe me that not every time I say something, do I know why I am saying it. I just convey what I am told from Above. But this I know: when I say it, you have to follow it - or else..."

Biographical
notes (in order of appearance):
Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the Lubavitcher: [11 Nissan 5662 - 3 Tammuz 5754 (April 1902 - June 1994 C.E.)], became the seventh Rebbe of the Chabad dynasty after his father-in-law's passing on 10 Shevat 5710 (1950 C.E.). He is widely acknowledged as the greatest Jewish leader of the second half of the 20th century. Although a dominant scholar in both the revealed and hidden aspects of Torah and fluent in many languages and scientific subjects, the Rebbe is best known for his extraordinary love and concern for every Jew on the planet. His emissaries around the globe dedicated to strengthening Judaism number in the thousands. Hundreds of volumes of his teachings have been printed, as well as dozens of English renditions.
Rebbetzin Chaya Moussia Schneerson
(of blessed memory: 25 Adar 5661- 22 Shevat 5748 / March 1901 - Feb. 1988 C.E.)
was the daughter of the sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef-Yitzchak
Schneersohn. On 14 Kislev 5689 (Dec. 1928 C.E.), she married the future Rebbe,
her distant cousin, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, in Warsaw, in a wedding
attended by many Chasidic Rebbes and leading Torah scholars of the generation.
She devoted herself totally to supporting her husband in his role as a leader
of world Jewry, and was known in her own right for her modesty, erudition,
piety and good deeds.
Rabbi Yosef-Yitzchak Schneersohn [of
blessed memory: 12 Tammuz 5640 - 10 Shevat 5710 (June 1880-Jan. 1950)], known
as the Rebbe Rayatz, was the sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe, from 1920 to 1950.
He established a network of Jewish educational institutions and Chassidim that
was the single most significant factor for the preservation of Judaism during
the dread reign of the communist Soviets. In 1940 he moved to the USA,
established Chabad world-wide headquarters in Brooklyn and launched the global
campaign to renew and spread Judaism in all languages and in every corner of
the world, the campaign continued and expanded so remarkably successfully by
his son-in-law and successor, Rabbi Menachem-Mendel Schneerson.
