Parsha Shemini, Shoah Where was H'? Polio Story, more

Parsha Shemini

Things were going quite well with the dedication of the Mishkan. For a week, the princes of the Tribes had brought their gifts and Aaron and sons had good practice with the Korbanos. Moshe was turning over the reins of Kahuna and stepping down to be just the plane prophet-king that had enough obligation to the Am.

9:1 And it came to pass on the eighth day, that Moses called Aaron and his sons, and the elders of Israel; 2 and he said unto Aaron: 'Take thee a bull-calf for a sin-offering, and a ram for a burnt-offering, without blemish, and offer them before the LORD. 3 And unto the children of Israel thou shalt speak, saying: Take ye a he-goat for a sin-offering; and a calf and a lamb, both of the first year, without blemish, for a burnt-offering; 4 and an ox and a ram for peace-offerings, to sacrifice before the LORD; and a meal-offering mingled with oil; for to-day the LORD appears unto you.'

Today, Aaron was on his own and going to do all the Korbanos without the tutorial of Moshe. The holiness of the L-RD was going to move from the cloud of glory to the spot in the Kodesh Kedoshim between the Cheruvim.

5 And they brought that which Moses commanded before the tent of meeting; and all the congregation drew near and stood before the LORD. 6 And Moses said: 'This is the thing which the LORD commanded that ye should do; that the glory of the LORD may appear unto you.' 7 And Moses said unto Aaron: 'Draw near unto the altar, and offer thy sin-offering, and thy burnt-offering, and make atonement for thyself, and for the people; and present the offering of the people, and make atonement for them; as the LORD commanded.' 8 So Aaron drew near unto the altar, and slew the calf of the sin-offering, which was for himself. 9 And the sons of Aaron presented the blood unto him; and he dipped his finger in the blood, and put it upon the horns of the altar, and poured out the blood at the base of the altar. 10 But the fat, and the kidneys, and the lobe of the liver of the sin-offering, he made smoke upon the altar; as the LORD commanded Moses. …He slew also the ox and the ram, the sacrifice of peace-offerings, which was for the people; and Aaron's sons delivered unto him the blood, and he dashed it against the altar round about, …22 And Aaron lifted up his hands toward the people, and blessed them; and he came down from offering the sin-offering, and the burnt-offering, and the peace-offerings. 23 And Moses and Aaron went into the tent of meeting, and came out, and blessed the people; and the glory of the LORD appeared unto all the people. 24 And there came forth fire from before the LORD, and consumed upon the altar the burnt-offering and the fat; and when all the people saw it, they shouted, and fell on their faces.

In the Mishkan and first Mikdash, the fire on the altar had been started by DIVINE Combustion and the people seeing this had fallen on their faces. They Shouted “Blessed be HE from HIS place!”

10:1 And Nadav and Avihu, the sons of Aaron, took each of them his censer, and put fire therein, and laid incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them. 2 And there came forth fire from before the LORD, and devoured them, and they died before the LORD.

We will see in Sefer Devarim that we are not to add or detract from the Torah. Nadav and Avihu unfortunately did this. There are hints to what their sin was. One hint is drinking wine and serving, the other is going before the holy of holies on a regular day like the 8th of Nissan and not Yom Kippur by the Cohain Gadol.

3 Then Moses said unto Aaron: 'This is it that the LORD spoke, saying: Through them that are nigh unto Me I will be sanctified, and before all the people I will be glorified.' And Aaron held his peace. 4 And Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel the uncle of Aaron, and said unto them: 'Draw near, carry your brethren from before the sanctuary out of the camp.' 5 So they drew near, and carried them in their tunics out of the camp, as Moses had said. 6 And Moses said unto Aaron, and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons: 'Let not the hair of your heads go loose, neither rend your clothes, that ye die not, and that He be not wroth with all the congregation; but let your brethren, the whole house of Israel, bewail the burning which the LORD hath kindled.

The mourning was given over to the nation. From that time onwards, the Cohain Gadol does not show mourning for even his near kind.

7 And ye shall not go out from the door of the tent of meeting, lest ye die; for the anointing oil of the LORD is upon you.' And they did according to the word of Moses.

Because he has been anointed Cohain Gadol, the mourning cannot be upon him. Perhaps he should have prayed that such a thing would not happen.

8 And the LORD spoke unto Aaron, saying: 9 'Drink no wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tent of meeting, that ye die not; it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations. 10 And that ye may put difference between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and the clean; 11 and that ye may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the LORD hath spoken unto them by the hand of Moses.'

Unlike the Nazir, this was only during the service but grape juice and grapes are not mentioned.

12 And Moses spoke unto Aaron, and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons that were left: 'Take the meal-offering that remains of the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and eat it without leaven beside the altar; for it is most holy. 13 And ye shall eat it in a holy place, because it is thy due, and thy sons' due, of the offerings of the LORD made by fire; for so I am commanded. 14 And the breast of waving and the thigh of heaving shall ye eat in a clean place; thou, and thy sons, and thy daughters with thee; for they are given as thy due, and thy sons' due, out of the sacrifices of the peace-offerings of the children of Israel. 15 The thigh of heaving and the breast of waving shall they bring with the offerings of the fat made by fire, to wave it for a wave-offering before the LORD; and it shall be thine, and thy sons' with thee, as a due for ever; as the LORD hath commanded.' 16 And Moses diligently inquired for the goat of the sin-offering, and, behold, it was burnt; and he was angry with Eleazar and with Ithamar, the sons of Aaron that were left, saying: 17 'Wherefore have ye not eaten the sin-offering in the place of the sanctuary, seeing it is most holy, and He hath given it you to bear the iniquity of the congregation, to make atonement for them before the LORD? 18 Behold, the blood of it was not brought into the sanctuary within; ye should certainly have eaten it in the sanctuary, as I commanded.' 19 And Aaron spoke unto Moses: 'Behold, this day have they offered their sin-offering and their burnt-offering before the LORD, and there have befallen me such things as these; and if I had eaten the sin-offering to-day, would it have been well-pleasing in the sight of the LORD? 20 And when Moses heard that, it was well-pleasing in his sight.

Normally, a Cohain would perform the Mitzvah of eating from the Korban but Aaron’s answer as a onetime occurrence pleased Moshe.

Rabbi Edward Davis Shlita: “And Moshe heard (what Aharon pointed out) and it was good in his eyes” (10:20). The Midrash states that Moshe made a proclamation to the entire camp of Israel saying: I erred in the Halacha, and my brother, Aharon, came and taught me (the correct Halacha). Why was it necessary to offer such a public declaration? The Netziv said that Moshe wished to teach the people that they should not refrain from admitting their errors. By realizing that even the leader of Klal Yisrael did not consider it beneath his dignity to state that he had committed a mistake, they would be inclined to follow suit. We similarly find in the Talmud that various Amoraim stated: I was mistaken in what I told you (see Shabbat 63b)

11:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses and to Aaron, saying unto them: 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying: These are the living things which ye may eat among all the beasts that are on the earth. 3 Whatsoever parts the hoof, and is wholly cloven-footed, and chews the cud, among the beasts, that may ye eat. 4 Nevertheless these shall ye not eat of them that only chew the cud, or of them that only part the hoof: the camel, because he chews the cud but parts not the hoof, he is unclean unto you. 5 And the rock-badger, because he chews the cud but parts not the hoof, he is unclean unto you. 6 And the hare, because she chews the cud but parts not the hoof, she is unclean unto you. 7 And the swine, because he parts the hoof, and is cloven-footed, but chews not the cud, he is unclean unto you.

Rabbi Yacov London Ztzal would start out his discourse as follows: “Of all the creatures in the world and of all the continents of the world, only these animals match the description.” This is something that Moshe could not have known about Australia or New Zeeland or the Americas. Yet HASHEM, who created the animals, knew!

8 Of their flesh ye shall not eat, and their carcasses ye shall not touch; they are unclean unto you. 9 These may ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them may ye eat. 10 And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that swarm in the waters, and of all the living creatures that are in the waters, they are a detestable thing unto you,

I have been told of an eel that supposedly has scales in the water but as soon as it leaves the water, they fall off. What we see before us is how we Poskin and not swimming under water. Thus the Carp, Tuna, Cod, etc. meet these requirements while the sea horse and other urchins, sharks, squids, octopuses etc. do not meet these requirements.

11 and they shall be a detestable thing unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, and their carcasses ye shall have in detestation. 12 Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that is a detestable thing unto you.

When the Torah says detestable it means unto you. It is not to say that unto the non-Jew frogs, crabs, ants, lobsters, scrimps etc. are not tasty but for the Jewish Neshama it is a detestation a destroys our Kedusha.

13 And these ye shall have in detestation among the fowls; they shall not be eaten, they are a detestable thing: the great vulture, bearded vulture, ospray; the kite, and the falcon after its kinds; 15 every raven, ostrich, night-hawk, sea-mew, and the hawk after its kinds; 17 and the little owl, and the cormorant, and the great owl; horned owl, pelican, carrion-vulture; stork, heron after its kinds, and the hoopoe, and the bat.

Most of these birds and bat (which is a fly version of a mouse) eat detestable things either mosquitos or vermin and some like the vulture or raven eat carrion.

20 All winged swarming things that go upon all fours are a detestable thing unto you. 21 Yet these may ye eat of all winged swarming things that go upon all fours, which have jointed legs above their feet, wherewith to leap upon the earth; 22 even these of them ye may eat: the locust after its kinds, and the bald locust after its kinds, and the cricket after its kinds, and the grasshopper after its kinds.

Only the Yemenite Jews have remained with a tradition to eat these the Ashkenazi and Sephardim refrain on the grounds that they have no tradition. I have my opinion on this but will not go against the majority of the Rabbis.

23 But all winged swarming things, which have four feet, are a detestable thing unto you. 24 And by these ye shall become unclean; whosoever touches the carcass of them shall be unclean until even.

These animals are so unclean that their carcasses become unclean and render Tumay anybody who touches them.

25 And whosoever bears aught of the carcass of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even. 26 Every beast which parts the hoof, but is not cloven footed, nor chews the cud, is unclean unto you; every one that touches them shall be unclean. 27 And whatsoever goes upon its paws, among all beasts that go on all fours, they are unclean unto you; whoso touches their carcass shall be unclean until the even. 28 And he that bears the carcass of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even; they are unclean unto you.

This is one of the reasons that many Orthodox Jews do not have pets.

29 And these are they which are unclean unto you among the swarming things that swarm upon the earth: the weasel, and the mouse, and the great lizard after its kinds, 30 and the gecko, and the land-crocodile, and the lizard, and the sand-lizard, and the chameleon. 31 These are they which are unclean to you among all that swarm; whosoever doth touch them, when they are dead, shall be unclean until the even. 32 And upon whatsoever any of them, when they are dead, doth fall, it shall be unclean; whether it be any vessel of wood, or raiment, or skin, or sack, whatsoever vessel it be, wherewith any work is done, it must be put into water, and it shall be unclean until the even; then shall it be clean. 33 And every earthen vessel whereinto any of them fall, whatsoever is in it shall be unclean, and it ye shall break.

Reptiles, amphibians, insects, rodents, squirrels, chip monks, moles, etc. render Tuma to things if their carcasses touch an earthen vessel.

34 All food therein which may be eaten, that on which water comes, shall be unclean; and all drink in every such vessel that may be drunk shall be unclean. 35 And everything whereupon any part of their carcass falls shall be unclean; whether oven, or range for pots, it shall be broken in pieces; they are unclean, and shall be unclean unto you.

We have to be holy in what we eat and the materials going into our bodies and the reason follows:

45 For I am the LORD that brought you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God; ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy. 46 This is the law of the beast, and of the fowl, and of every living creature that moves in the waters, and of every creature that swarms upon the earth; 47 to make a difference between the unclean and the clean, and between the living thing that may be eaten and the living thing that may not be eaten.

Just like the Shabbos is different from the other days in our behavior towards and holiness so are our bodies different from the other peoples of the world in behavior, holiness and food intake.

The Rebbe and the Polio Epidemic by Rabbi Yerachmiel Tilles

h that year fell on Shabbos as it does this year. (I know you are expecting a Passover story, and I apologize, but blame the pandemic; this year I can't say the Kaddish, lead the prayers, be called to the Torah or read the Haphtarah, so at least I'll do this. It will still be Passover next week.)

While I (Yechiel Ziskind) was studying in the Chabad yeshiva in 770 Eastern Parkway [in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, NY], I came down with polio at age 23. This was in 1955, the same year that the Jewish doctor, Jonas Salk, introduced the polio vaccine, but it came out too late for me. I caught a bad case of the disease, which started as a cold, but it progressed from there.
Polio, for those who are too young to remember, was a contagious disease that has since been totally eradicated in the Western World, but it used to kill a lot of people. It disabled the muscles, so the afflicted person could not walk or even breathe, and the standard form of treatment then was to put the sick into an iron lung and hope for the best.
I was taken to the Kingston Avenue Hospital, which no longer exists, but back then was the chief hospital for contagious diseases. I was put into an iron lung, which looked something like a large water boiler, with only my head sticking out. This iron lung did the compression work of my paralyzed chest muscles and thus got oxygen into my body. But I was very, very sick.
The doctor who was taking care of me had an arrogant way of speaking and he told my father and brother, "G-d knows if he'll live out the next twelve hours."
Hearing that, they went to the Rebbe and told him what my prognosis was. But the Rebbe just made a dismissive gesture with his hand. "He'll outlive the doctor," he declared. And he gave me many blessings for recovery.
I lasted longer than the doctor's prognosis of twelve hours, but I continued my confinement in the iron lung. My yeshiva colleagues - Kehos Wiess, Mottel Zajac and Berel Baumgarten - had been instructed by the Rebbe to visit me every day to make sure I had kosher food and to put tefillin on me. When the doctor saw them, he said, "Don't bother with him … Just let him die in peace." They reported this to the Rebbe who told them the same thing he told my father and brother, "He will outlive the doctor."

And, tragically, that's exactly what happened. Two days later, the doctor caught polio himself and shortly thereafter died.
I stayed in the iron lung through the summer - June, July, August and September - and then was transferred to a hospital on Welfare Island (what is today Roosevelt Island) for recovery. During this period, whenever the Rebbe distributed wine from his Havdalah cup for a blessing at the end of a holiday, he always gave some to my father to bring to me.
Through G-d's kindness, I recovered, even though it took over two years and, afterwards, I had to use a wheelchair for a while and then I couldn't walk without crutches. I was still in the wheelchair when my family accompanied me back to yeshiva. While we were still in the hallway, the Rebbe was heading to the synagogue for the Maariv (evening) prayer. When he spotted us, he immediately turned around and invited us into his office.
During that audience, he told me, "In my opinion, you will become completely healthy," and then he asked me, "Reb Yechiel, what are you doing to find a match for marriage?"
"The Rebbe means now?" I asked, surprised. Here I was, just out of rehab, getting around in a wheelchair, and the Rebbe was telling me to look for a wife?!
"Absolutely," he said, with a smile. "Not right now. Now is the middle of the night, so it's a little late. But tomorrow you should get on it."
"But I have debts," I countered, explaining that I had just bought a car, and certainly I didn't have the income to support a wife and family.
To this the Rebbe responded, "Don't worry. G-d sustains two and a half billion people in the world; he'll sustain a few more." *
At this juncture, my father asked, "The Rebbe means in his current condition?"
I'll never forget the Rebbe's amazing answer: "His condition is obvious. The girl can decide whether it's for her or not. But I know of cases where the issues are not obvious, and people aren't open with each other. In his situation, there's nothing to reveal, it is what it is."
Then the Rebbe said to me (in Yiddish), "Es vet zain noch a trit in yam" - "It will just be another step in your journey." Just as G-d helped you to survive, He will help you to get married, as well."
Believe it or not, the very next day, a woman called my aunt saying she saw me and she thought she had a match for me, a girl who had also recovered from polio. Her name was Leah Lipkind, and she became my wife and the mother of our children.
* The Rebbe responded identically to our concerned parents when we merited a private audience with him shortly before our wedding at the end of 1973 (Kislev 5734). Only then it was already up to 4 billion! -- YT
