Life Saving measure, Parsha Chukas, Story, news

Pekeuach Nefesh: Regarding the question of wearing a mask or no. Yes, your oxygen levels will go down and your CO2 level up. However, what happens if a Covid infected person has no mask and you have a mask? You could have up to a 70% chance of getting infected if less than social distanced.
What happens if you don’t have a mask and the Covid person has a mask you have a 15% chance of being infected.
What happens if you both have a mask then the chance of being infected drops to 1.5% and if socially distanced and less than 15 minutes together it drops to .5% and lower than .1%. So if now for your own sake, for the sake of your parents or grandparents. One who does not wear a mask in public is likened to that of a murderer as it was a death than can and should be prevented.

Parsha Chukas

Up until this point, since the parting of the sea and the war with Amalek, things have been peaceful from external threats. We are close to the end of 39 years since Yitzias Mitzrayim. Now most of the generation that was in the wilderness is gone. Instead of confronting the King of Arad and some say he was Amalek, the Bnei Yisrael is about to head for the Jordan Valley via the wilderness of Paran and the Zin river basin which is easy for the elderly and animals to navigate. In fact, Arad is many kilometers or miles north of the area. From Sde Boker to modern Arad via internet search is 47.4 miles or to ancient Arad a slightly smaller amount. The modern roads take over an hour of traveling and back then would have been a day or two so why would he attack the Bnei Yisrael as it seems that they are bi-passing Canaan from the East?

19:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying: 2 This is the statute of the law which the LORD hath commanded, saying: Speak unto the children of Israel, that they bring thee a red heifer, faultless, wherein is no blemish, and upon which never came yoke.

The sin of the Golden Calf reintroduced death into the world after the wonderful receiving of the Torah. Now come the Parah Aduma (red motherly cow) to atone for the Egel (calf).

This is the statute of the Torah: Because Satan and the nations of the world taunt Israel, saying, “What is this commandment, and what purpose does it have?” Therefore, the Torah uses the term “statute.” I have decreed it; You have no right to challenge it. — [Yoma 67b] Perfectly Red – cannot have two black hairs.

3 And ye shall give her unto Eleazar the priest, and she shall be brought forth without the camp, and she shall be slain before his face. 4 And Eleazar the priest shall take of her blood with his finger, and sprinkle of her blood toward the front of the tent of meeting seven times. 5 And the heifer shall be burnt in his sight; her skin, and her flesh, and her blood, with her dung, shall be burnt.

Everything about the Parah is burnt. In order to insure the burning, more items are cast in such as Cedar, Hyssop and Scarlet.

6 And the priest shall take cedar-wood, and hyssop, and scarlet, and cast it into the midst of the burning of the heifer.

Since the Cedar and Hyssop are flammable it helps with the burning, but I cannot fathom the reason for the burning of the Scarlet if it the chemical that dyes wool or a piece of wool. Quantities are not given. The whole ceremony why a red cow without two black hairs etc. defines the logic the Melech Shlomo searched for.

7 Then the priest shall wash his clothes, and he shall bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he may come into the camp, and the priest shall be unclean until the even. 8 And he that burns her shall wash his clothes in water, and bathe his flesh in water, and shall be unclean until the even.

One of the things that defy logic with the priests that deal with the Parah who were Tahor suddenly become Tamay until the evening.

9 And a man that is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer, and lay them up without the camp in a clean place, and it shall be kept for the congregation of the children of Israel for a water of sprinkling; it is a purification from sin. 10 And he that gathers the ashes of the heifer shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even; and it shall be unto the children of Israel, and unto the stranger that sojourns among them, for a statute forever.

He is clean, gathers the ashes, becomes unclean, but they cleanse the nation. This defied the logic of Shlomo Melech Yisrael who had a better tradition from me being closer to Sinai.

11 He that touches the dead, even any man's dead body, shall be unclean seven days; 12 the same shall purify himself therewith on the third day and on the seventh day, and he shall be clean; but if he purify not himself the third day and the seventh day, he shall not be clean.

He must purify himself within special ‘living waters’ Mikvah and on these days only. Also defying logic but in the spiritual world that we cannot perhaps it is very logical.

13 Whosoever touches the dead, even the body of any man that is dead, and purifies not himself--he hath defiled the tabernacle of the LORD--that soul shall be cut off from Israel; because the water of sprinkling was not dashed against him, he shall be unclean; his uncleanness is yet upon him. 14 This is the law: when a man dies in a tent, every one that cometh into the tent, and everything that is in the tent, shall be unclean seven days.

This is the law: when a man dies in a tent- literally this is the Torah – a man who ‘dies from the world in the tent of Torah, learning’ that is what is the famous Drasha of our Sages.

… 20:1 And the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, came into the wilderness of Zin in the first month; and the people abode in Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and was buried there.

The Modern Kadesh is on the area by the border of Egypt. On the Egyptian side, there is good grazing land and one can see the Arab women and young children taking care of the sheep or goats. It is basically on the other side of the Israel-Egyptian Border and 57 miles or on modern roads an hour and twenty-four minutes of driving non-stop based on ideal conditions. To reach the point that I think would be easy to go down. However, there is a route closer to Eilat that would explain the mountains of Seir. That route takes 101 miles and is 3hrs 45 minutes to 4hrs 19minutes and add on another 9.3 miles on current roads to Aqaba. Simply a number of days’ journey for a nation walking in the wilderness.

2 And there was no water for the congregation; and they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron.

It was on Miriam’s merit that the Bnei Yisrael had water and now they had none.

3 And the people strove with Moses, and spoke, saying: 'Would that we had perished when our brethren perished before the LORD! 4 And why have ye brought the assembly of the LORD into this wilderness, to die there, we and our cattle? 5 And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in unto this evil place? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink.' 6 And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the tent of meeting, and fell upon their faces; and the glory of the LORD appeared unto them.

This is not the generation that left Egypt. It was similar in a way to my generation who saw my grandparents and heard my father say “under the Kaiser it was good”. The Kaiser Franz Yosef died when my father was 5years old. This new generation was mouthing what they had heard from their parents as they were under 20 or not even born when the people left Egypt.

7 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 8 'Take the rod, and assemble the congregation, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes, that it gives forth its water; and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock; so thou shalt give the congregation and their cattle drink.'

It is not enough to just save the people from dying of thrust, but they needed their income with honor too. Just as Rivka gave to the Camels of Eliezer so Moshe must give to the flocks and herds of Yisrael.

9 And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as He commanded him. 10 And Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said unto them: 'Hear now, ye rebels; are we to bring you forth water out of this rock?'

At first he spoke to the rock and a trickle of water came out. He should have spoken more.

11 And Moses lifted up his hand, and smote the rock with his rod twice; and water came forth abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their cattle.

Instead of speaking more and the Kiddush HASHEM would be greater, he smote the rock not once but twice in anger and his anger and not following orders properly at his level caused him to lose his entry pass into Eretz Yisrael.

12 And the LORD said unto Moses and Aaron: 'Because ye believed not in Me, to sanctify Me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.'

Moshe failed on his level to complete the Kiddush HASHEM.

13 These are the waters of Meribah, where the children of Israel strove with the LORD, and He was sanctified in them. 14 And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh unto the king of Edom: 'Thus saith thy brother Israel: Thou know all the travail that hath befallen us; 15 how our fathers went down into Egypt, and we dwelt in Egypt a long time; and the Egyptians dealt ill with us, and our fathers; 16 and when we cried unto the LORD, He heard our voice, and sent an angel, and brought us forth out of Egypt; and, behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the uttermost of thy border. 17 Let us pass, I pray thee, through thy land; we will not pass through field or through vineyard, neither will we drink of the water of the wells; we will go along the king's highway, we will not turn aside to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed thy border.'

He requested to pass on the King’s Highway as a brother and pay for supplies, but Edom would have none of it.

18 And Edom said unto him: 'Thou shalt not pass through me, lest I come out with the sword against thee.' 19 And the children of Israel said unto him: 'We will go up by the highway; and if we drink of thy water, I and my cattle, then will I give the price thereof; let me only pass through on my feet; there is no hurt.'

This conversion took place at once with a delegation for negotiations.

20 And he said: 'Thou shalt not pass through.' And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand. 21 Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border; wherefore Israel turned away from him.

Via the first passage, it would appear that Yisrael wanted to go down from Kadesh towards Eilat-Aqaba. The fact that they avoid Edom means either they continued up north via the Israel side of the Syria-African fault or that they took the alternative way via Ein Avdat – Nahal Zin and went down from the heights in this area. The later route might have alerted the King of Arad. However, the first route with them at the Jordanian Har Ha Hor on the Dead Sea or further northwards. I have not read enough commentaries to figure this out how they avoided Edom and why the King of Arad woke up to them.

22 And they journeyed from Kadesh; and the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, came unto mount Hor.

Now because of the sin by the water and the lack of proper leadership by the golden calf, Aaron had lost his place in Eretz Yisrael and he would not enter the land. Miriam passed away at the age of Sarah at the age of 127, Aaron was now 123years old.

23 And the LORD spoke unto Moses and Aaron in mount Hor, by the border of the land of Edom, saying: 24 'Aaron shall be gathered unto his people; for he shall not enter into the land which I have given unto the children of Israel, because ye rebelled against My word at the waters of Meribah. 25 Take Aaron and Eleazar his son, and bring them up unto mount Hor. 26 And strip Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son; and Aaron shall be gathered unto his people, and shall die there.'

Moshe stripped Aaron of his Cohain Gadol outfit and put the Tzitz (writing of Kodesh Le HASHEM) Mitre, Ephod, Avnet, Urim and Thummim, Ketones and Aaron lay there.

27 And Moses did as the LORD commanded; and they went up into mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation. 28 And Moses stripped Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son; and Aaron died there in the top of the mount; and Moses and Eleazar came down from the mount.

How did they know he died? A tremendous light filled the cave as HASHEM gave him a kiss and immediately it was dark and the cave was sealed with a marker.

29 And when all the congregation saw that Aaron was dead, they wept for Aaron thirty days, even all the house of Israel.

The clouds of glory that covered the scorching sun left and Am Yisrael knew that Aaron had died. Just like the well of Miriam.

21:1 And the Canaanite, the king of Arad, who dwelt in the South, heard tell that Israel came by the way of Atharim; and he fought against Israel, and took some of them captive. 2 And Israel vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said: 'If Thou wilt indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.'

As soon as the King of Arad who was from Amalek heard that Am Yisrael no longer had clouds of glory to protect them, he thought now was a good time to attack. Perhaps the lack of the clouds also gave him the pretense to raise an army to get rid of Am Yisrael once and for all. As typical, Amalek attacks the weaker slower members of the nation that lag behind, women, children and the elderly easier to captive.

3 And the LORD hearkened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities; and the name of the place was called Hormah.

Further to the north and perhaps west of Edom.

4 And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way to the Red Sea, to compass the land of Edom; and the soul of the people became impatient because of the way.

The only reason I see going south was to claim the modern area of Eretz Yisrael to Eilat as Kodesh. For otherwise what do we need the turning back from Har Ha Hor to opposite Har Seir?

5 And the people spoke against God, and against Moses: 'Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, and there is no water; and our soul loath this light bread.' 6 And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.

They spoke with their tongues now a forked tongue reptile will take them out.

7 And the people came to Moses, and said: 'We have sinned, because we have spoken against the LORD, and against thee; pray unto the LORD, that He take away the serpents from us.' And Moses prayed for the people. 8 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole; and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.' 9 And Moses made a serpent of brass, and set it upon the pole; and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he looked unto the serpent of brass, he lived.

Our Sages ask and answer: Does (did) the hand of Moshe make war with Amalek or the brazen serpent kill or cause to live? Only that when Am Yisrael looked up towards heaven to see Moshe’s arms or the brazen serpent on the pole that they were saved. Clearly it was the looking up towards heaven that saved them.

10 And the children of Israel journeyed, and pitched in Oboth. 11 And they journeyed from Oboth, and pitched at Ije-abarim, in the wilderness which is in front of Moab, toward the sun-rising.

This is going to be their main encampment before entering Eretz Yisrael.

12 From thence they journeyed, and pitched in the valley of Zered. 13 From thence they journeyed, and pitched on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness, that cometh out of the border of the Amorites.--For Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites; 14 wherefore it is said in the book of the Wars of the LORD: Vaheb in Suphah, and the valleys of Arnon,

Sefer HaYashar mentioned in Beresheis I have seen but I do not know if this is included and I know of no other ancient texts on the subject.

21 And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, saying: 22 'Let me pass through thy land; we will not turn aside into field, or into vineyard; we will not drink of the water of the wells; we will go by the king's highway, until we have passed thy border.' 23 And Sihon would not suffer Israel to pass through his border; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and went out against Israel into the wilderness, and came to Jahaz; and he fought against Israel.

Esav or Edom was left alone by the merits of Avraham and Yitzchak but Sihon had no merits and was dealt with properly and justly according to the conventions of war.

24 And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from the Arnon unto the Jabbok, even unto the children of Ammon; for the border of the children of Ammon was strong.

What is called Yarden today belongs to us much further deep inwards but only in the future.

25 And Israel took all these cities; and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all the towns thereof. 26 For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of his hand, even unto the Arnon. 27 Wherefore they that speak in parables say: Come ye to Heshbon! let the city of Sihon be built and established! 28 For a fire is gone out of Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon; it hath devoured Ar of Moab, the lords of the high places of Arnon. 29 Woe to thee, Moab! thou art undone, O people of Chemosh; he hath given his sons as fugitives, and his daughters into captivity, unto Sihon king of the Amorites.

Poking fun at the gods of Moav.

33 And they turned and went up by the way of Bashan; and Og the king of Bashan went out against them, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei. 34 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Fear him not; for I have delivered him into thy hand, and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt do to him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon.' 35 So they smote him, and his sons, and all his people, until there was none left him remaining; and they possessed his land.

Og was a giant of a man and most people feared him but Moshe stood up to him and with the help and guidance of HASHEM he and his army was slain.

22:1 And the children of Israel journeyed, and pitched in the plains of Moab beyond the Jordan at Jericho.

This week’s story is about a woman - great advice for a good marriage.

DO NOT PUSH – MRS SARAH KARMELY

When I first became Torah observant, my husband gave me a hard time about it. He did not understand why I was suddenly doing some of the things I was doing — to him it seemed I was becoming a different person than the one he had married — and he did not like it.

So I wrote a very self-righteous letter to the Rebbe, complaining, “I’ve decided to keep Torah and my husband won’t cooperate. But isn’t it true that I must do it despite what he says?

“I fully expected the Rebbe to respond, “Yes, you have to do what the Torah commands, no matter what your husband wants.” But the Rebbe did not say that. Instead, he gave me a two-part answer that basically said: “Don’t fight with your husband about religion, and find someone to influence him, someone whom he will respect.

“It was such wise advice, and fully in keeping with the Rebbe’s approach of finding a positive solution to every problem. And I wish I had immediately done what he said, but it took me a while to accept that harmony in the home — what Judaism calls ‘Shalom Bayit’ — had to take precedence.

Generally, what happens when a wife fights with her husband about religion? Whether or not he gives in, he is not going to like her and he is not going to like religion, which he will see as a divisive force in their marriage. Furthermore, their children will be adversely affected when they see their parents fighting and they too will identify religion as the cause of the tension in the home.

As for the second part of the Rebbe’s advice, I had to accept that I wasn’t supposed to be my husband’s rabbi — I was his wife. He was Sephardi so the way to reach him was through a Sephardi rabbi, one who understood his background and knew how to speak to him about religious matters.

The moment I found such a person and took a step back, things started to improve.

There were further issues to be sure — some quite painful. In fact, there was a point in time that I considered divorce. At one stressful juncture, I wrote to the Rebbe that I couldn’t take it anymore. I wanted a husband who would accompany me on my journey to become fully Torah observant, not one who was fighting me every step of the way. If we divorced, I reasoned, all this strife would go away, and we could both lead happier lives apart from each other.

The Rebbe’s response was a very strongly worded note in which he pointed out to me that I had gotten married in a religious ceremony, sanctified with the name of G-d. Not only that, I had been blessed with children, and therefore had a duty to raise them in a complete, and not a broken, home.

“This is your true fortune ... and your mission as a role model to all your acquaintances and all Jewish women,” the Rebbe wrote, referring to the fact that I was then teaching the Laws of Family Purity to newly-religious women in my community in Queens. “Therefore, it is impossible that you will feel fortunate (or even have simple peace of mind) if you separate from your husband.”

The Rebbe ended that if I was still unhappy after my last child has grown up and left the home, then we can take up this subject again. Meanwhile, he would pray for me at the gravesite of the Previous Rebbe.

Although in hindsight I understand that the Rebbe knew we would never get divorced, he executed a brilliant psychological maneuver by letting me think that my request was not rejected outright, just postponed.

This is just how the Rebbe stressed the positive every step of the way. Once when I wrote him a very depressed letter, saying that I don’t know where my marriage was going as I was not at all successful in helping my husband to become observant, the Rebbe actually tore off the part of the letter where I was badmouthing myself and wrote: “You succeeded in the most essential areas — running a household and family according to the Torah ... and even your husband is increasing in [his observance of] the Torah and mitzvot from time to time...

“Whenever I went to see him, complaining about my husband, he would always put me back on track. And he would reassure me, “Don’t worry — your husband will get there. Just don’t push and don’t argue.”

The Rebbe understood that sooner or later, my husband was going to become Torah observant, but I had to let him do it at his own pace. I had to relate to him with patience and understanding, not with whining or nagging.

One summer, I had to decide what to do. Should I go by myself on a vacation to Israel, where modest dress and kosher food would not be an issue? Or should I go along with my husband on a business trip to Bangkok, where all these things would be problem? When I wrote a note to the Rebbe about it, I received a response from the Rebbe’s secretary to immediately go to the synagogue downstairs where the Rebbe was receiving people and handing out booklets of chasidic teachings.

I went running to stand in line, and when my turn came, the Rebbe looked at me sternly and said, “Bangkok with your husband.”

The people standing around asked me, “What is the Rebbe talking about?

“But I just said, “Nothing. I get it.” And I went to Bangkok with my husband, who was very happy that I did. But then he said to me, “I suppose that I won’t be seeing you for another year.

“That is when I realized how much I had been neglecting my husband. I had thrown myself into trying to help others come close to Torah which kept me away from home a great deal of time. But charity begins at home!

“Give more time to your husband” was what the Rebbe had been trying to tell me when he told me to go to Bangkok, despite the problems of religious observance that it would pose.

When I finally and fully implemented all of the Rebbe’s advice, his promise to me that “everything will work out in the end” was realized.

My husband ended up becoming even more religious than me. But his progress came about only after I stopped arguing with him about religion and related to him with love and patience, just as the Rebbe was telling me to do.

Today, I give other people the advice which I first received from the Rebbe, and I also tell them what I learned by trial and error: If you decide to be observant, it can be hard on your spouse. Suddenly, you are a different person than the one he or she married. That frightens them. And possibly, they find that you are now looking down on them. So they don’t like it. But, no matter what, you cannot become a holy man or woman at a cost to your Shalom Bayit.

Most times when things were difficult and I would ask the Rebbe for help, he would tell me to do everything to preserve the harmony of the home, to do things “in a diplomatic way.” You can say the same thing in the nice tone or an argumentative tone. You can present it as “my way or the highway,” or you can present it in a gentle way. This what the Rebbe taught me.
