Parsha Korach, 2 stories, news

No need for prayers for my recovering granddaughter who B”H is healing nicely.
Mazel Tov to my grandson, Yosef Yitzchak, for his completion of Shas Gemara. He has become the third generation to do so.

Parsha Korach

What makes people who are Billionaires start pushing a political agenda. Most start pushing some globalist idea. Only one who worked his way up with construction artisans by his side manage to keep thinking like the average man. The others lost contact with what is a simple G-D fearing man. That was the problem of the wealthy Korach. He started his own political philosophy and turned it into his religious philosophy until he was willing to die for his self-induced principles. This rebellion was the last of the great-rebellions. The incident with the tribe of Shimon at the end of the Sefer is not a rebellion against leadership but a lusting.

16:1 Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men; 2 and they rose up in face of Moses, with certain of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty men; they were princes of the congregation, the elect men of the assembly, men of renown;

As in many cases power or money makes one hungry for more. Korach was a first cousin of Moshe and Aaron and had a wonderful holy job in the Mishkan. He was so wealthy that the saying “as rich as Korach” comes down to us to this day. But yet like many billionaires they are not satisfied with being rich and donating to charity they want to change the world like they see it. The most horrible example today is George Tsoros. The motives of many others are questionable.

3 and they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto them: 'Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them; wherefore then lift ye up yourselves above the assembly of the LORD?' 4 And when Moses heard it, he fell upon his face.

Moshe did not look for the task, in fact he tried in Parsha Shemos to avoid the task. I am soon turning 73 and I can imagine Moshe at over 81 as this occurred at least in the second year dealing with this.

5 And he spoke unto Korach and unto all his company, saying: 'In the morning the LORD will show who are His, and who is holy, and will cause him to come near unto Him; even him whom He may choose will He cause to come near unto Him. 6 This do: take you censors, Korach, and all his company; 7 and put fire therein, and put incense upon them before the LORD to-morrow; and it shall be that the man whom the LORD doth choose, he shall be holy; ye take too much upon you, ye sons of Levi.'

Korach is warned not to do so as he is special being a Levi why not leave it at that and not to bite off more than he can chew.

8 And Moses said unto Korach: 'Hear now, ye sons of Levi: 9 is it but a small thing unto you, that the God of Israel hath separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to Himself, to do the service of the tabernacle of the LORD, and to stand before the congregation to minister unto them; 10 and that He hath brought thee near, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee? and will ye seek the priesthood also? 11 Therefore thou and all thy company that are gathered together against the LORD--; and as to Aaron, what is he that ye murmur against him?'

Moshe tried reasoning with the Leviim as up until now had been a loyal tribe.

12 And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab; and they said: 'We will not come up; 13 is it a small thing that thou hast brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, but thou must needs make thyself also a prince over us? 14 Moreover thou hast not brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, nor given us inheritance of fields and vineyards; wilt thou put out the eyes of these men? we will not come up.'

Unlike Korach, who was polite enough to listen, these people felt that Reuven, the first born, should have had the leadership and the first born had the priesthood before Moshe. They had a superiority complex.

15 And Moses was very wroth, and said unto the LORD: 'Respect not Thou their offering; I have not taken one ass from them, neither have I hurt one of them.'

Moshe was insulted at their arrogance cried out unto HASHEM.

16 And Moses said unto Korach: 'Be thou and all thy congregation before the LORD, thou, and they, and Aaron, to-morrow; 17 and take ye every man his fire-pan, and put incense upon them, and bring ye before the LORD every man his fire-pan, two hundred and fifty fire-pans; thou also, and Aaron, each his fire-pan.'

Tomorrow there is going to be a show-down. Did they not see Moshe perform miracles? Did they not pass through the sea or witness the war of Amalek? Did they not eat quail? Where was their logic?

18 And they took every man his fire-pan, and put fire in them, and laid incense thereon, and stood at the door of the tent of meeting with Moses and Aaron. 19 And Korach assembled all the congregation against them unto the door of the tent of meeting; and the glory of the LORD appeared unto all the congregation.

They were so blinded by their power and ambition that the truth escaped them.

20 And the LORD spoke unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying: 21 'Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.' 22 And they fell upon their faces, and said: 'O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and wilt Thou be wroth with all the congregation?'

HASHEM was wroth with the entire congregation over these 250 people. Moshe had to pray for the others.

23 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 24 'Speak unto the congregation, saying: Get you up from about the dwelling of Korach, Dathan, and Abiram.'

The name of On Ben Peleg is missing. How is this so? It was a righteous wife that saved On from the follow. She was smart. She and the songs of Korach and the same reasoning. If Korach and the other two win, they will be the leaders. If Moshe wins which seems to been proven with all the rebellions, On or the children of Korach will be left high and dry. For the righteous of these young men, Shmuel HaNovi was born. They managed to write Tehillim.

25 And Moses rose up and went unto Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him. 26 And he spoke unto the congregation, saying: 'Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest ye be swept away in all their sins.'

They had one last chance to repent but refused it.

27 So they got them up from the dwelling of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side; and Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood at the door of their tents, with their wives, and their sons, and their little ones. 28 And Moses said: 'Hereby ye shall know that the LORD hath sent me to do all these works, and that I have not done them of mine own mind. 29 If these men die the common death of all men, and be visited after the visitation of all men, then the LORD hath not sent Me. 30 But if the LORD make a new thing, and the ground open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down alive into the pit, then ye shall understand that these men have despised the LORD.'

Nobody had ever seen a fault develop in the earth and of such magnitude as to swallow 250 family tents.

31 And it came to pass, as he made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground did cleave asunder that was under them. 32 And the earth opened her mouth and swallowed them up, and their households, and all the men that appertained unto Korach, and all their goods. 33 So they, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit; and the earth closed upon them, and they perished from among the assembly.

This was not a sink hole or ordinary fault but such an opening that would swallow them alive as a mouth swallows food and closes up again.

34 And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them; for they said: 'Lest the earth swallow us up.' 35 And fire came forth from the LORD, and devoured the two hundred and fifty men that offered the incense.

Even stranger was the phenomena of fire from the ground either in the form of hot lava or burning oil or natural gas.

17:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 'Speak unto Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, that he take up the fire-pans out of the burning, and scatter thou the fire yonder; for they are become holy; 3 even the fire-pans of these men who have sinned at the cost of their lives, and let them be made beaten plates for a covering of the altar--for they are become holy, because they were offered before the LORD--that they may be a sign unto the children of Israel.' 4 And Eleazar the priest took the brazen fire-pans, which they that were burnt had offered; and they beat them out for a covering of the altar, 5 to be a memorial unto the children of Israel, to the end that no common man, that is not of the seed of Aaron, draw near to burn incense before the LORD; that he fare not as Korah, and as his company; as the LORD spoke unto him by the hand of Moses.

You would think that from this point onwards, the congregation would behaved having seen and that they learned their lesson but this was not to be.

6 But on the morrow all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron, saying: 'Ye have killed the people of the LORD.' 7 And it came to pass, when the congregation was assembled against Moses and against Aaron, that they looked toward the tent of meeting; and, behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of the LORD appeared. 8 And Moses and Aaron came to the front of the tent of meeting. 9 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 10 'Get you up from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.' And they fell upon their faces. 11 And Moses said unto Aaron: 'Take thy fire-pan, and put fire therein from off the altar, and lay incense thereon, and carry it quickly unto the congregation, and make atonement for them; for there is wrath gone out from the LORD: the plague is begun.'

The Medrash tells us that when Moshe was 40 days on Mt. Sinai, the Angels presented him with presents. The Angel of Death presented him with the gift that when a plague starts he should take incense and burn it so that death will not take those near the infected area.

12 And Aaron took as Moses spoke, and ran into the midst of the assembly; and, behold, the plague was begun among the people; and he put on the incense, and made atonement for the people. 13 And he stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stayed. 14 Now they that died by the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred, besides them that died about the matter of Korah. 15 And Aaron returned unto Moses unto the door of the tent of meeting, and the plague was stayed.

The initial rebellion was 250 people but 14,700 died because of the plague. For there were participants that were active and thousands more passive who did nothing but agreed with the philosophy of Korach.

16 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 17 'Speak unto the children of Israel, and take of them rods, one for each fathers' house, of all their princes according to their fathers' houses, twelve rods; thou shalt write every man's name upon his rod. 18 And thou shalt write Aaron's name upon the rod of Levi, for there shall be one rod for the head of their fathers' houses. 19 And thou shalt lay them up in the tent of meeting before the testimony, where I meet with you.

Everybody complied.

20 And it shall come to pass, that the man whom I shall choose, his rod shall bud; and I will make to cease from Me the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against you.' 21 And Moses spoke unto the children of Israel; and all their princes gave him rods, for each prince one, according to their fathers' houses, even twelve rods; and the rod of Aaron was among their rods. 22 And Moses laid up the rods before the LORD in the tent of the testimony. 23 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses went into the tent of the testimony; and, behold, the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi was budded, and put forth buds, and bloomed blossoms, and bore ripe almonds.

This was not a magic trick as there were no almond trees in the wilderness and everybody was in the camp. It also most likely was not the time of the almond blossoms that is Shevat – Adar.

24 And Moses brought out all the rods from before the LORD unto all the children of Israel; and they looked, and took every man his rod.

Each tribe received his rod as it had been the day and night before with the exception of Levi.

25 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Put back the rod of Aaron before the testimony, to be kept there, for a token against the rebellious children; that there may be made an end of their murmurings against Me, that they die not.'

Anybody wanting to see the miracle could for generations to come with fresh almonds and buds on the shepherd’s staff.

26 Thus did Moses; as the LORD commanded him, so did he.

The Teva would contain the witness of the miracle forever.

27 And the children of Israel spoke unto Moses, saying: 'Behold, we perish, we are undone, we are all undone. 28 Every one that cometh near, that comes near unto the tabernacle of the LORD, is to die; shall we wholly perish?'

Now Am Yisrael was sobered up and would not rebel regarding to service in the Ohel Moed anymore (or the future Mikdash).

18:1 And the LORD said unto Aaron: 'Thou and thy sons and thy fathers' house with thee shall bear the iniquity of the sanctuary; and thou and thy sons with thee shall bear the iniquity of your priesthood. 2 And thy brethren also, the tribe of Levi, the tribe of thy father, bring thou near with thee, that they may be joined unto thee, and minister unto thee, thou and thy sons with thee being before the tent of the testimony.

Only the Cohanim would serve and the Leviim would work with them.

3 And they shall keep thy charge, and the charge of all the Tent; only they shall not come nigh unto the holy furniture and unto the altar, that they die not, neither they, nor ye. 4 And they shall be joined unto thee, and keep the charge of the tent of meeting, whatsoever the service of the Tent may be; but a common man shall not draw nigh unto you. 5 And ye shall keep the charge of the holy things, and the charge of the altar, that there be wrath no more upon the children of Israel.

A stranger, meaning non-Cohain, drawing near would die.

6 And I, behold, I have taken your brethren the Levites from among the children of Israel; for you they are given as a gift unto the LORD, to do the service of the tent of meeting.

Despite the behavior of Korach, the rest of the tribe of Levi kept their gift of service.

7 And thou and thy sons with thee shall keep your priesthood in everything that pertains to the altar, and to that within the veil; and ye shall serve; I give you the priesthood as a service of gift; and the common man that draws nigh shall be put to death.'

He deserved death by the hands of man, but if he did so by stealth, he would die by the hands of G-D. NEVER ASK A QUESTION REGARDING A YOUNG MAN OR WOMAN who appears to die before their time. Either they did something in this incarnation deserving of death, an atonement for the last incarnation or that they have fulfilled their mission in this world. No matter how painful it looks to us this is the case. Nothing happens by accident and G-D does not make a mistake if a man soul is placed in a female body or reverse for it is to teach a valuable less to the Neshama.

8 And the LORD spoke unto Aaron: 'And I, behold, I have given thee the charge of My heave-offerings; even of all the hallowed things of the children of Israel unto thee have I given them for a consecrated portion, and to thy sons, as a due for ever. …12 All the best of the oil, and all the best of the wine, and of the corn, the first part of them which they give unto the LORD, to thee have I given them. 13 The first-ripe fruits of all that is in their land, which they bring unto the LORD, shall be thine; every one that is clean in thy house may eat thereof. 14 Everything devoted in Israel shall be thine. 15 Everything that opens the womb, of all flesh which they offer unto the LORD, both of man and beast, shall be thine; howbeit the first-born of man shalt thou surely redeem, and the firstling of unclean beasts shalt thou redeem. 16 And their redemption-money--from a month old shalt thou redeem them--shall be, according to thy valuation, five shekels of silver, after the shekel of the sanctuary--the same is twenty gerahs.

These are what the Cohain gets also the firstlings of edible animals.

17 But the firstling of an ox, or the firstling of a sheep, or the firstling of a goat, thou shalt not redeem; they are holy: thou shalt dash their blood against the altar, and shalt make their fat smoke for an offering made by fire, for a sweet savor unto the LORD. 18 And the flesh of them shall be thine, as the wave-breast and as the right thigh, it shall be thine.

These gifts are yours. You will be able to live in a house in a city but shall serve the public. No inheritance shall be yours not even as much as the 24 small cities of the Leviim and their surrounding fields.

20 And the LORD said unto Aaron: 'Thou shalt have no inheritance in their land, neither shalt thou have any portion among them; I am thy portion and thine inheritance among the children of Israel. …22 And henceforth the children of Israel shall not come nigh the tent of meeting, lest they bear sin, and die.

This repetition of the above is to reinforce the warning of the death penalty for approaching the holy area.

…26 'Moreover thou shalt speak unto the Levites, and say unto them: When ye take of the children of Israel the tithe which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then ye shall set apart of it a gift for the LORD, even a tithe of the tithe.

This is the Teruma and the Ma’aser given to the Cohanim and the Leviim.

30 Therefore thou shalt say unto them: When ye set apart the best thereof from it, then it shall be counted unto the Levites as the increase of the threshing-floor, and as the increase of the wine-press. 31 And ye may eat it in every place, ye and your households; for it is your reward in return for your service in the tent of meeting. 32 And ye shall bear no sin by reason of it, seeing that ye have set apart from it the best thereof; and ye shall not profane the holy things of the children of Israel, that ye die not.'

The people who eat Teruma or Ma’aser outside of Ma’aser Ani or Ma’aser Sheni shall die.

The Potential Third by Rabbi Yerachmiel Tilles

[I usually don't use "Don't know if it is true or not true but in any case certainly it could be true" stories, but this one I was unable to resist because of its weekly reading connection. --YT]

Years ago [In the 19th century], the Jewish settlement in the Land of Israel was entirely dependent on the generosity of its brethren in the Diaspora. To that end, special emissaries would travel throughout Europe collecting donations, visiting local Jews and soliciting funds.

One time an emissary arrived in a certain city and was given a warm welcome. All of the townspeople came to the synagogue to hear him deliver his appeal. At the end of the speech, a prominent member of the local community volunteered to accompany him on his rounds from house to house.

The two men walked through the Jewish section knocking on doors and asking for donations. Not one family refused to contribute. The contributions varied according to financial circumstance, but everyone was happy to give at least something. Then the emissary noticed that they had skipped a mansion, and asked his companion why. "It would be a waste of effort," he was told. "The man who lives there is a miser. He has never given even a penny to charity."

"But we have to try," the emissary insisted. "Who knows? Maybe our words will penetrate his heart."

They knocked on the door, which was opened by the wealthy miser himself. "Good day!" the emissary said cheerfully. "May we speak with you for a minute?"

"You may certainly speak, but if you've come for a donation of money you're wasting your time," the miser said dryly.

But the emissary would not give up. "You're obviously a wealthy man. Don't you want to help support the poor and hungry Jews of the Holy Land? Everyone else in town is contributing generously."

"My money belongs to me," the miser declared sharply. "I worked very hard for it, and saved every penny. I refuse to give the fruit of my labors to someone who didn't expend the effort."

The emissary looked at him with pity in his eyes. "You're right, it's your money and your decision," he conceded. But before he left he added under his breath, "It looks as if you're going to be the third."

The miser closed the door with the emissary's words echoing in his ears. What did he mean? A whole day he couldn't get the comment out of his head, and that night he tossed and turned in bed. "It looks as if you're going to be the third." The third what? He had to find out.

The next day the miser searched the city until he found the emissary from Israel. "I must know," he pleaded with him. "What did you mean when you said that I would be the third?"

The emissary smiled. "Yesterday I honored your principle of not giving away any of your hard-earned money. So how can you expect me to share my wisdom with you for nothing? I also worked very hard to acquire it."

The miser acknowledged that he was right, and agreed to pay for the answer. The emissary insisted on a sum three times what he usually asked of the rich, and the transaction was made.

"Now I will tell you a story," the emissary began. "Many years ago there lived a very wealthy man who was as stingy as he was rich. He was even miserly when it came to himself. He even refused to marry, lest a wife and children drain his finances.

"The man worked very hard his whole life and eventually amassed a fortune. Before he passed away, he instructed the Burial Society to bury him with all his money. Even after death he refused to part from his riches.

"His final wishes were carried out, and not one cent remained above ground. When the grave was filled, the angel in charge of the deceased came to accompany him to the Heavenly Court.

"'Did you study Torah?' the man was asked. 'No,' he replied, 'I was a businessman.'

"'Then certainly you supported those who did with your charity. Tell us,' the judges urged him, 'which good deeds did you perform with all your money?'

"'Look, there's nothing to talk about,' the man answered. 'I brought all my money with me. Do whatever you want with it.'

"'You don't understand,' they explained. 'Here money has no value. The currency is mitzvot-commandments.' The man's fate hung in the balance.

"After much discussion the judges realized that there was only one precedent in history, when the wealthy, rebellious Korach had been swallowed up by the earth with all his riches. In the end it was decided that the miser, who had also been buried with all his money, should be sent to keep him company. The lonely Korach would no doubt be delighted.

"But it's very hard to spend such a long time with even two people," the emissary continued. "I'm sure that Korach and his friend are very bored by now, and would welcome a third conversationalist into their group. When I met you I thought to myself, 'Who knows? Maybe their boredom will soon be alleviated. Now though, that you've given me your donation, I think that Korach and his friend will have to wait a while longer."

From that day on the former miser was always the first to contribute to every charitable cause that came his way.

I believe the story to be true about this miser in the story within the story, the miser with the money might not have been true.

There is another story I read. Miser 2 by Rachamim Pauli

I don’t recall the source it was a long time ago somewhere between 52 to 45 years ago or so.

Once there was a very wealthy miser who had no children. He never donated to any cause. Once a poor Avreach (Torah student who is raising a family) came to him. He was in dire need. The Miser said, “If you are looking for a handout, I will not give you anything.” The fellow replied, “This is not the case sir. I am looking for a loan. I want to start a business but have no capital. Perhaps you can give me a loan?”

“If that is the case, I will be willing to do so, but who is your guarantor?” The poor fellow said, “Only G-D knows if I will succeed and only G-D can be my guarantor.”

The rich miser wrote up a contract for the man and he left on a venture. It took him a long time to make back the money, support his family, etc. The due date had passed. Finally, the Avreach came back with the money to pay back the miser.

The miser refused to take the money saying that his guarantor had paid him back handsomely with interest on the business loan.

Years passed and if I recall the Avreach either became the Rav of the city or the Rav of the city knew the story. The old miser passed away and the Chevra Kedisha (burial society) did not want to give him a burial. Nobody wanted to deal with the corpse.

The Rav told the story and the city came out to honor him for it turned out that the loaves of bread left secretly for the poor each day stopped coming. It was secretly from the miser. Then they knew he was a hidden Tzaddik and gave him the proper honor due him.
