A few words about Pesach

It is the custom that the Rav of the City speaks to the public the Shabbos before Pesach called Shabbos HaGadol. This year Shabbos HaGadol falls on the day before Pesach so at that time, the story is academic if the Rabbi speaks or not for all the preparations and selling of the Chametz has been done.  This leaves us with the only time to speak effectively as this week.

By this time, most of my preparations and that of my household is finished. I am about to kosher the stove and oven Motzei Shabbos and on Sunday placing the silver Kiddush Cups in Boiling Water. Since I had next to zero guests this year, there is even less of these to kosher. I have already purchased some of the hard cheeses and chicken for the holiday. I have yet to finish with some of the fish and cheese for the holiday.

This issue contains after the stories how to check for medications. Some iron pills are kosher, some calcium pills are kosher and others not. It is imperative that we consult a doctor and a Ruv for medications. One year I had been quite ill with a stomach condition that the Ruv told me to take the medicine that the doctor prescribed Pesach or not. Today I might have looked for a substitute if I was to Poskin.

Also in the special section below is the sale of Chametz on-line. This year it is important to do so. A few links about koshering the kitchen and never be afraid to ask your local Orthodox Rabbi if you are uncertain.

Finally, a little story for the great Rabbi Moshe Feinstein of righteous memory. (Thanks to Avraham Winograd)

Every Erev Shabbos a widow used to call Rav Moshe to check when Shabbos comes in and when it goes out. Now must of us if we got a phone call like this would refer the woman to the charts distributed by Chabad, Funeral Homes or even buy the poor lady a calendar. Rabbi Feinstein was a wise man. He knew why the widow was calling and the times were just part of it. He would enquire as to her health and welfare. She did not need so much the time but somebody to talk to for a few minutes. When Moshe Feinstein died she was at the head of the women’s line crying. A family member came over to her and asked her if she was related as he had never seen her at family affairs. She said no but told him of her weekly calls to Rav Moshe. It seems that his impact on her was equal to or greater than is Pasakim to Rabbis of large Congregations, Roshei Yeshiva, etc. It was those few precious minutes a week that kept this woman going like a brother or best friend. So the loss of the Ruv was especially hard on her.

Remember this year the fast of the Bechor or Siyum is Thursday morning and Thursday night is the search for Chametz and the Bitul (nullification) of Chametz and on Friday we burn the Chametz and nullify on Shabbos.

Parsha Vayikra

Sofar in the Chumash we have seen 20 generations until Avraham came and re-established the purpose of mankind in this world to work for upgrading the mundane into the holy realm. Then after the death of the fathers and the twelve brothers, the horrors of slavery in Egypt. Freedom, the first group of Mitzvos and the receiving of the Luchos. The building of Mishkan. Now that the Mishkan has been built what are we to do? This is where we take off with the Korbanos and the marching with the Mishkan. The goal is to enter Eretz Yisrael as a free nation and conquer the land.

1:1 And the LORD called unto Moses, and spoke unto him out of the tent of meeting, saying: 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them: When any man of you bring an offering unto the LORD, ye shall bring your offering of the cattle, even of the herd or of the flock. 3 If his offering be a burnt-offering of the herd, he shall offer it a male without blemish; he shall bring it to the door of the tent of meeting, that he may be accepted before the LORD. 4 And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the burnt-offering; and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him.

Korban Olah or burnt offering must be an animal without blemish and he has to place his hands on the animal and say “In the name of a Korban Olah”.

5 And he shall kill the bullock before the LORD; and Aaron's sons, the priests, shall present the blood, and dash the blood roundabout against the altar that is at the door of the tent of meeting.

Not kill the animal with electric shock or chopping off of the head but ritually slaughtering the animal.

6 And he shall flay the burnt-offering, and cut it into its pieces.

In the Mikdash, there were Cohanim who used to slaughter the animals, others catch the blood, others throw the blood on the Mizbayach and two or more Cohanim work on flaying the Korbanos. These or other Cohanim remove forbidden fats and the Gid HaNashe (sinew vein).

7 And the sons of Aaron the priest shall put fire upon the altar, and lay wood in order upon the fire.

Other Cohanim took the wood and stoked the fire, cleaned the ashes.

8 And Aaron's sons, the priests, shall lay the pieces, and the head, and the suet, in order upon the wood that is on the fire which is upon the altar;

After the animal was flayed, the pieces were put on the Mizbayach.

9 but its inwards and its legs shall he wash with water; and the priest shall make the whole smoke on the altar, for a burnt-offering, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto the LORD.

All this work for the burnt offering was to create a sweet fragrance for HASHEM.

10 And if his offering be of the flock, whether of the sheep, or of the goats, for a burnt-offering, he shall offer it a male without blemish.

As with the cattle from the flock one shall take a male for the Korban Olah.

11 And he shall kill it on the side of the altar northward before the LORD; and Aaron's sons, the priests, shall dash its blood against the altar round about.

Ritually slaughter, etc.

12 And he shall cut it into its pieces; and the priest shall lay them, with its head and its suet, in order on the wood that is on the fire which is upon the altar. 13 But the inwards and the legs shall he wash with water; and the priest shall offer the whole, and make it smoke upon the altar; it is a burnt-offering, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto the LORD.

Again the whole process is similar but instead of the large bull, a smaller ram or Billy-goat is used.

14 And if his offering to the LORD be a burnt-offering of fowls, then he shall bring his offering of turtle-doves, or of young pigeons. 15 And the priest shall bring it unto the altar, and pinch off its head, and make it smoke on the altar; and the blood thereof shall be drained out on the side of the altar.

The pinching of the neck of the fowl with the sharpened fingernail of the thumb is called Melika. Similar in sound to salting Melicha.

16 And he shall take away its crop with the feathers thereof, and cast it beside the altar on the east part, in the place of the ashes.

This was done by Cohanim who knew how to easily remove fathers and the crop.

17 And he shall rend it by the wings thereof, but shall not divide it asunder; and the priest shall make it smoke upon the altar, upon the wood that is upon the fire; it is a burnt-offering, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto the LORD.

Because of its size, the pigeon or dove is a bit different from the other Korbanos that are animals and not birds.

2:1 And when any one brings a meal-offering unto the LORD, his offering shall be of fine flour; and he shall pour oil upon it, and put frankincense thereon. 2 And he shall bring it to Aaron's sons the priests; and he shall take thereout his handful of the fine flour thereof, and of the oil thereof, together with all the frankincense thereof; and the priest shall make the memorial-part thereof smoke upon the altar, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto the LORD.

With the exception of a Korban Todah, all the meal offering within the year was unleavened. The Todah also used a few leaven pieces. It was the Tumay loaves of a Todah that were placed on top of the wall in the Mikdash Erev Pesach. All the time that the two loaves were available it was possible to hide your Chametz or make a last minute sale. After that, one had to destroy the remaining Chametz and say the formula for annulling remaining crumbs.

3 But that which is left of the meal-offering shall be Aaron's and his sons'; it is a thing most holy of the offerings of the LORD made by fire.  4 And when thou brings a meal-offering baked in the oven, it shall be unleavened cakes of fine flour mingled with oil, or unleavened wafers spread with oil.  5 And if thy offering be a meal-offering baked on a griddle, it shall be of fine flour unleavened, mingled with oil. 6 Thou shalt break it in pieces, and pour oil thereon; it is a meal-offering.

Now we have finished all the types of cattle, flocks, birds and grains used in the Mikdash.

For a change this year, I want to speak of why the various Korbanos? The Rambam (Maimonides) is of the opinion that except for a Korban Pesach and maybe the daily or holiday Korbanos, people will no longer sin in the days of the Moshiach.

I am sure that the Rambam has his sources but it would have to be a world where miracles occur all the time. What is a Korban Chatas and why is it brought? It is a sin offering where Kares occurs or even the death penalty for Mayzid and the Sin Offering comes to exempt somebody from this. Example a man forgot it was Shabbos and thought it was Friday and gathered some fruit or collected newly formed eggs from the hens. Later on he/she was told it was Shabbos. Or a person knew it was Shabbos but forgot that writing was a forbidden Melacha. Or a couple is on vacation and it is dark and it just happens that some other couple has the same name and the two go off. Here there was no intent to sin, just to behave as some young couples behave. It could be two couples with the same names Abe and Sara where there is a whisper between them like Sara sweetie and Ok Abe honey.

There are Asham or guilt offerings and uncertain Korbanos Asham etc. All this for accidently sinning. You have to look no further than a senior having a senior moment to find reasons for Korbanos.

The Korban Todah for traveling on a trip across the desert, ocean, etc. where there is some element of danger. Even today where most air plane trips are even safer than driving a car, still there are accidents and even with modern ships certain storms and waves and overthrown mighty ships.

The Torah tells us after a woman gives birth to a male or after a woman gives birth to a female that a pigeon or dove be used etc.

13 And if the whole congregation of Israel shall err, the thing being hid from the eyes of the assembly, and do any of the things which the LORD hath commanded not to be done, and are guilty: 14 when the sin wherein they have sinned is known, then the assembly shall offer a young bullock for a sin-offering, and bring it before the tent of meeting. 15 And the elders of the congregation shall lay their hands upon the head of the bullock before the LORD; and the bullock shall be killed before the LORD.

There are a number of reasons for bringing this Korban. Usually it is the Sanhedrin that errs. Or the King, Cohain Gadol botches up a Halachic Ruling. Example the Sanhedrin allows warming up a baby over an open fire. Comes along an old Rav in the name of his Rebbe and says. This is not permitted as I heard that Molech worship was putting an infant over an open fire. Suddenly, members of the Sanhedrin remember this forgotten Halacha. If the Sanhedrin accepts his testimony they have to bring this Korban. If you think something like this cannot happen, remember the story of Hillel, the elder, in Pesachim 60B where he and the elders forgot the Halacha and saw how the people brought the slaughter knives when Pesach fell like this year on Shabbos. After the people did this, two weavers gave witness before Hillel that Shemaya and Avtallion behaved this way.

Halachos are forgotten, Sefarim become banned. [Who would have thought that Dr. Seuss Books would be banned. FYI Little Black Samba was a dark Caucasian in India but not Hindi as he at Tiger Pancakes.] To our great sorrow many Tractates of Gemara especially the Yerushalmi were lost to us over the centuries with the massive burning of hand written books. Passages about Yeshu and friends were censored out of the regular Talmud.

16 And the anointed priest shall bring of the blood of the bullock to the tent of meeting.

Cohain Gadol.

17 And the priest shall dip his finger in the blood, and sprinkle it seven times before the LORD, in front of the veil. 18 And he shall put of the blood upon the horns of the altar which is before the LORD, that is in the tent of meeting, and all the remaining blood shall he pour out at the base of the altar of burnt-offering, which is at the door of the tent of meeting. 19 And all the fat thereof shall he take off from it, and make it smoke upon the altar. 20 Thus shall he do with the bullock; as he did with the bullock of the sin-offering, so shall he do with this; and the priest shall make atonement for them, and they shall be forgiven. 21 And he shall carry forth the bullock without the camp, and burn it as he burned the first bullock; it is the sin-offering for the assembly.

This is for the whole Congregation. There are many Halachos that we do not know today and are left over for the time when Eliyahu will come just prior to the Moshiach to clarify. Example: A truck loses a box of oranges falling over 4 Amos square since it is a pain in the neck for a driver to stop and pick up a few Shekels worth of oranges, he continues driving. But what happens if over 8 Amos falls 2 boxes? Is the loss worth gathering or not and we then go up in numbers and don’t know at what level the driver will have to recover all the oranges?

22 When a ruler sins, and does through error any one of all the things which the LORD his God hath commanded not to be done, and is guilty: 23 if his sin, wherein he hath sinned, be known to him, he shall bring for his offering a goat, a male without blemish.

For a ruler to be corrected there are basically two conditions. One that he knows of his sin and secondly, he has to be from Melech David for otherwise he could be like the King of Yisrael Yehu or Ahav who murdered others. David took the criticism from Natan others for he was humble.

24 And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the goat, and kill it in the place where they kill the burnt-offering before the LORD; it is a sin-offering.

The King with his crown and royal robes and the Cohain Gadol with his rich outfit shall appear together for this Korban.

25 And the priest shall take of the blood of the sin-offering with his finger, and put it upon the horns of the altar of burnt-offering, and the remaining blood thereof shall he pour out at the base of the altar of burnt-offering. 26 And all the fat thereof shall he make smoke upon the altar, as the fat of the sacrifice of peace-offerings; and the priest shall make atonement for him as concerning his sin, and he shall be forgiven.  27 And if any one of the common people sin through error, in doing any of the things which the LORD hath commanded not to be done, and be guilty:

Due to the error of the Sanhedrin or King then instead of a male the common man gets to take a Nanny-goat. That is or the one who had some minimum amount of money. However, the dirt poor man brings a flour offering.

28 if his sin, which he hath sinned, be known to him, then he shall bring for his offering a goat, a female without blemish, for his sin which he hath sinned. 29 And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the sin-offering, and kill the sin-offering in the place of burnt-offering. 30 And the priest shall take of the blood thereof with his finger, and put it upon the horns of the altar of burnt-offering, and all the remaining blood thereof shall he pour out at the base of the altar. 31 And all the fat thereof shall he take away, as the fat is taken away from off the sacrifice of peace-offerings; and the priest shall make it smoke upon the altar for a sweet savour unto the LORD; and the priest shall make atonement for him, and he shall be forgiven. {P}

32 And if he brings a lamb as his offering for a sin-offering, he shall bring it a female without blemish. 33 And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the sin-offering, and kill it for a sin-offering in the place where they kill the burnt-offering. 34 And the priest shall take of the blood of the sin-offering with his finger, and put it upon the horns of the altar of burnt-offering, and all the remaining blood thereof shall he pour out at the base of the altar. 35 And all the fat thereof shall he take away, as the fat of the lamb is taken away from the sacrifice of peace-offerings; and the priest shall make them smoke on the altar, upon the offerings of the LORD made by fire; and the priest shall make atonement for him as touching his sin that he hath sinned, and he shall be forgiven.

All this to gain forgiveness.

5:1 And if any one sin, in that he hears the voice of adjuration, he being a witness, whether he hath seen or known, if he do not utter it, then he shall bear his iniquity;

When brought before a Beit Din or small Sanhedrin, a person has to testify if he has heard an adjuration. However, the person has to know to whom the adjuration was given, the time, the place and over which sin. Can you imagine somebody warning anonymous, the elder, not to commit a sin with Blondie and it turns out the second witness say Brunette the case is dismissed.

2 or if any one touch any unclean thing, whether it be the carcass of an unclean beast, or the carcass of unclean cattle, or the carcass of unclean swarming things, and be guilty, it being hidden from him that he is unclean; 3 or if he touch the uncleanness of man, whatsoever his uncleanness be wherewith he is unclean, and it be hid from him; and, when he knows of it, be guilty; 4 or if any one swear clearly with his lips to do evil, or to do good, whatsoever it be that a man shall utter clearly with an oath, and it be hid from him; and, when he knows of it, be guilty in one of these things; 5 and it shall be, when he shall be guilty in one of these things, that he shall confess that wherein he hath sinned; 6 and he shall bring his forfeit unto the LORD for his sin which he hath sinned, a female from the flock, a lamb or a goat, for a sin-offering; and the priest shall make atonement for him as concerning his sin.

These are examples how a guilt offering comes about for the Korban Asham.

11 But if his means suffice not for two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, then he shall bring his offering for that wherein he hath sinned, the tenth part of an ephah of fine flour for a sin-offering; he shall put no oil upon it, neither shall he put any frankincense thereon; for it is a sin-offering. 12 And he shall bring it to the priest, and the priest shall take his handful of it as the memorial-part thereof, and make it smoke on the altar, upon the offerings of the LORD made by fire; it is a sin-offering.

Korbanos are subject to the amount of wealth of the person involved.

14 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 15 If any one commit a trespass, and sin through error, in the holy things of the LORD, then he shall bring his forfeit unto the LORD, a ram without blemish out of the flock, according to thy valuation in silver by shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, for a guilt-offering. 16 And he shall make restitution for that which he hath done amiss in the holy thing, and shall add the fifth part thereto, and give it unto the priest; and the priest shall make atonement for him with the ram of the guilt-offering, and he shall be forgiven.

17 And if any one sin, and do any of the things which the LORD hath commanded not to be done, though he know it not, yet is he guilty, and shall bear his iniquity. 18 And he shall bring a ram without blemish out of the flock, according to thy valuation, for a guilt-offering, unto the priest; and the priest shall make atonement for him concerning the error which he committed, though he knew it not, and he shall be forgiven. 19 It is a guilt-offering--he is certainly guilty before the LORD.

Up until now all these examples are accidents between man and G-D.

20 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 21 If any one sin, and commit a trespass against the LORD, and deal falsely with his neighbor in a matter of deposit, or of pledge, or of robbery, or have oppressed his neighbor; 22 or have found that which was lost, and deal falsely therein, and swear to a lie; in any of all these that a man doeth, sinning therein; 23 then it shall be, if he hath sinned, and is guilty, that he shall restore that which he took by robbery, or the thing which he hath gotten by oppression, or the deposit which was deposited with him, or the lost thing which he found, 24 or anything about which he hath sworn falsely, he shall even restore it in full, and shall add the fifth part more thereto; unto him to whom it appertains shall he give it, in the day of his being guilty. 25 And he shall bring his forfeit unto the LORD, a ram without blemish out of the flock, according to thy valuation, for a guilt-offering, unto the priest. 26 And the priest shall make atonement for him before the LORD, and he shall be forgiven, concerning whatsoever he doeth so as to be guilty thereby.

He has sworn falsely with the name of G-D and robbed his fellow man.

When I conducted my first Seder. By Rabbi Rachamim Pauli

It was 5717 a few months before my 10th birthday. My mother’s father who was only 4th generation Reform was lying in Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx with just barely two weeks left of life in this world. He would have been proud of me and my efforts. I took the scarf of my grandfather from my father’s side and put it over my shoulder. There was no Tallis in the house and it was the closest thing to a Reform Tallis that I had.

I had a small pamphlet from the Reform Temple given out to my 10th grade class. That condensed version was my Haggadah. My mother bought Matzos perhaps egg Matzos that were tasty, a can of gefilte fish and horseradish, parsley and our normal non-kosher chicken, meat or perhaps lamb chops.

I started out reading the Haggadah and asked the four questions. WHAT WAS GOING ON HERE? NO ANSWERS. A winded story for a worker for an Arami was my father. Evedim we were in Mitzrayim. But why this particular night was different from all other nights, I did not get a clear answer for. So what did I do, I told the story similar to the Cecile B. DE mille Movie “The Ten Commandments” in my own vocabulary. Nobody was going to get a long winded answer but straight to the point at my Seder. [FYI today I give the long winded one and not the precise point but if my great-grandson was to press me, I would be concise.]

I was not the first to realize that there was something lacking in the answers. Our Sages in various commentaries spoke about it. The Haggadah was codified about 1880 years ago as the last standard comments come from Rabbis that were in the meeting of the Bar Kochba Revolt of 132 -135 CE on Tisha B’ Av.

I was not educated and perhaps I was just beginning to know about Maror with my first taste of horseradish. I was about to eat my first Matzo that night even if it was not a Shmurah Matzo and most likely an Egg Matzo. I knew what the Korban Pesach was and how it came about but all the symbols and pointing out was completely new to me as was the Seder.

So to the dozens of Gerim and potential Gerim that I deal with I too was once like you innocent, ignorant but with the love of G-D to start something new that I had not known in my house.

Lost Shabbos in Yonkers by Rabbi Y. Tilles

http://ascentofsafed.com/Stories/Stories/5781/pdf/s1213YonkersWeltonShabbat.pdf

In January 2021, one of my beloved congregants in Lincoln Park Jewish Center [in Yonkers, NY–see ed. note at end] told me [Rabbi Levi Welton] it would be his last Shabbat in shul. "Sorry, Rabbi, but I got offered a job and I'll have to work on the Sabbath." He caught me off-guard as we both stood socially distant from one another, our masks covering our faces.

He had been a rabbi's model congregant (and, by that, I mean he didn't fall asleep in my sermons) and I was just beginning to get to know him. What was I supposed to tell him? That I'd love to see him whenever he can make it to shul? That there are many other mitzvah she can do to bring Mashiach? The Coronavirus has impacted so many people financially and they were offering him a lucrative salary. Who was I to mess around with someone else's parnossa (livelihood)?

For those who know me, you know that I hate conflict and often bend over backwards to accommodate and not alienate. But this wasn't some trivial Facebook-debate. This was the holy Shabbat we're talking about! I was on the spot. What was I supposed to do?

"What would the [Lubavitcher] Rebbe say?"

This thought pierced my mind as I stood there, his eyes searching mine. I took a deep breath.

"My brother," I began. "It is impossible that the Creator of Heaven and Earth would give a child of His a challenge he cannot overcome.

A great Jewish poet -the Ahad Ha'am -once said, ‘More than the Jews have kept Shabbat, Shabbat has kept the Jews.’ You must tell them you can't work on the Shabbat. And, if you need a letter stating you require religious accommodation, I will write one for you."

During this past week, he did not reach out to me. I worried if he would ever talk to me again. "Maybe I shouldn't have pushed so hard?"

Today, after I finished praying the Amidah,1 I turned around to face the congregation and saw him in the second row.

He smiled and waved to me. I snuck over to him and asked in shock, "What are you doing here?!" He leaned close and said, "Rabbi, everyone else in my life was encouraging me to take the job. You were the only one who was adamantly opposed. Yet, in the end I turned it down. I thought to myself, if there are Holocaust survivors like R' Chaim Grossman who still show up to shul,2 then how much more so should I.

So guess what happened next? When my old job heard what happened, they offered me a raise to stay. Plus, they put in my new contract that I will never have to work on Shabbat! I want you to know that if you hadn't given it to me straight, I wouldn't be standing here today.

"I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Tears hit my eyes. In my sixteen years as a Rabbi, this is one of the top moments of my entire career. I opened my mouth and told him that the Talmud (Avoda Zara 17a) states there are those who acquire their World to Come in (just) one glorious moment.

As the service progressed, I couldn't control myself and I stood up in front of the entire congregation and, with his permission, told them what had occurred. I said that the Talmud (Berachos 6a) teaches that G-d wears tefillin just as His children do. In our tefillin, it is written, "Hear O' Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One" (Deut. 6:4). But, in His tefillin, it states, "And who is like your people Israel, a nation unique on Earth." (II Samuel 7:23).

This man inspired our entire congregation. This man inspired me. It's easy for me to come to shul on Shabbat. After all, I'm paid to do so.

But, for someone like him, to make that choice....achh, all I can say is that we are now reading the stories in the Torah of the "miracles and signs" G-d made for the Jewish people in Egypt. But this was a great miracle this man made for G-d.

1 Silent, standing prayer of 19 blessings on weekdays and 7 blessings on Shabbat and Biblical festivals (9 in one of the Rosh Hashana prayers).
