A friend and teacher, Rabbi Yerachmiel Kram of saintly memory by Rabbi R. Pauli

Before I go into who was Rabbi Yerachmiel Kram and how he helped me, I have to give out some of my own story background. For my first few years in Israel helped me and I helped him with the spread of Torah.
I came to Eretz Yisrael during Black Sept. 1970. My plane was supposed to fly via the Orange Terminal at JFK to London but ended up at the Blue Terminal and via Geneva to confuse the enemy. Nobody checked me that I had in my right pocket 4 full sets of cutlery for meat or my left pocket 4 sets of milk cutlery. As I boarded the 707 plane Mrs. Dyckoff handed me a present also unchecked. Everybody in those days could walk out to the plane.
Landing in Israel late in the afternoon of 9/9/70 I was driven via Yavne to the absorbsion center in Mercas Aleph Ashdod. The next day, the first thing I wanted to find out if the Supermarket was Kosher and searched with a vocabulary of about 1000 broken Hebrew Words for the Chief Rabbi, Rabbi Adler Zal. I found the Ashkenazi Synagogues in the area and met English Speakers. With their help, I was able find a Medical Group that was located of all places in the Charedi Area.
Mapam was in charge of the Absorption Ministry (Anti-religious Stalinist who moved over the years to become the current Meretz Party). I wanted to be in Israel for Rosh Hashanah that occurred on Oct. 1st that year. Shortly after that, the Academic Employment Office made an effort to send me to one place that might have work for me. They did not think my English or Computer Skills were what the country needed. They told me that they had made a mistake and would send me back to the USA at their expense. (Who needs 1,000,000 Hungarian Jews in Adolf Eichmann’s deal when 15,000 cows were more useful for the new country). This is how they felt or the cutting of the Peyos, of the children from Teheran. The religious Moroccan children were spread among anti-religious Kibbutzim as the Country was founded and Yemenite Children were stolen and sold to Holocaust Survivors that were too old to have children. This is what I was up against and Yad L’Achim.
My father warned me that Israel was non-religious and a number of US Rabbis like Rabbi Danziger did not make it despite their better Hebrew in a land run by Socialists. I had two inspirations on my road to becoming Orthodox the first was Rabbi Akiva, a 40year old illiterate shepherd who because the greatest leader and teacher of Torah. The second was Avraham, Avinu who had to fight his idol worshipping father and Nimrod. My father was non-observant and his father hated Judaism but Mapam was not quite on the level of Nimrod.
As I came to the Absorbsion Center on Shabbos and saw a few cars moving I opened up my window over Mercas Aleph and let out a Kiddush in my 23year old operatic voice that could be heard almost to Mercas Bet and Dalet. I was Avram the warrior for HASHEM.
After a few visits to the Medical Fund with the wife expecting our first (this was long before ultra-sound became a tool for doctors) we sat down there and were noticed by the Charedim. When Hanukah came around Rav Yerachmiel sent his younger brother, Avraham Goldstein Shlita to check me out and welcome me. It did not take long until I found out from him how to move to Kiriat Ponevez or should I move into Shikun Pittsburgh with the Pittsburgher Rebbe. [It was to turn out to be the same place like many things in Israel given different names for political reasons.]
As the bureaucracy would not let me move out of the Absorption Center without either employment or a pension, I went out and found the local employment office for High School Graduates. I found a job in quality control for a company that produced orange juice and in the summer tomato juice. Once I had employment with the help of Rabbi Yerachmiel or Avraham, I filled out forms and moved into the smaller apartment as I had not enough children for the larger one.
We moved into Kiriat Ponevez between January and February. Towards the end of March, the company hired an Israeli girl with Protection from one of the higher bosses. I did not know it, but I was being replaced by this girl. As the orange season ended, I found myself without a job. But two things were coming soon the first Pesach and the second my oldest child.
Where were we to get Kosher Le Pesach food? Comes Rav Yerachmiel to the rescue and with his car and on order a truckload or two brings in all what is needed for a Kosher Le Pesach super market. He uses a like two class rooms and opens up a store with the supplies that supply the Yeshiva Rabbis and young married men their needs and that of the rest of the community.
My first born comes along during Chol HaMoed and my mother-in-law and I are invited to a Shalom Zachor hosted by the Glicksman Family. The one week of the year where no chickpeas at the party.
We decided to order catering from a follower of the Rebbe who has a restaurant but it is not the Glatt that the Charedim eat for the next Bris two years later, it will be Rabbi Yerachmiel who will supply the meat.
During this time, I managed to help Rav Yerachmiel take young boys and send them to Yeshivas instead of the National Religious Schools of Ashdod. One of my friends married a girl from one of the schools. This is what she told me. “Out of 17 girls that entered the 9th grade in my class, 9 were pregnant after/during the first year”. He managed to take one of my 6 grade girls and she came back like a young lady after half a year. But then came the summer vacation and I saw her hanging out in a mini with her belly button showing. I spoke to Rabbi Yerachmiel and this is what he told me. The environment for the children and their peers was so bad in Ashdod that if they did not come from Charedi homes they were bound to go off the path in the summer time. It was then when I had to come up with a summer camp outside of Israel if need be and pay for clothing and eyeglasses for these children.
I contributed part of my salary and during a time of unemployment worked as a Shamash of a Schul to pay the Tzeduka that I used to give him. The problem was that as much as Yerachmiel worked and my late friend Yacov Glicksman and I donated it was not enough. Chaim Fuks took over some of the job from Keren Ezra LeYeledim that supplemented Yad LeAchim which would become two organizations and what we were doing was more Lev LeAchim.
One of the great successes of Rav Yerachmiel was helping set up a Shomer Shmita fruit store with one of our neighbors running it. He once chased with Rav Meir Fine Shlita or Fein down to Nuweiba a Yeshiva youth who had run away. He placed him in a Yeshiva in Tiberia and I was at his Sheva Berachos years later.
In one of the poor neighborhoods of Tel Aviv two brothers murdered their grandmother for approximately 600 Israeli Lira that was about $160 to $170. They were not professional mafia members and were caught. Rav Yerachmiel took the sister and gave her a Charedi education and saved her from that environment. Now a problem arose and that was who wanted a female like thing for a wife. He managed to find a husband from the Satmar Chassidim in Brooklyn and here too I was invited to the Sheva Berachos.
Rav Yerachmiel was famous for his Torah Shuirim and some are available in Hebrew on the internet. He gave Shuirim to the Friday Kollel System that I was instrumental with the help of Rabbi Simcha HaCohain Kuk Shlita and Rav Yerachmiel Kram of forming. He gave once during the week after work in Elta Electronics and on Fridays too for the workers. IAI followed with Baruch Dim getting Rabbi Yerachmiel Boyer Shlita to give the shiur along with Rav Meir Fein in the beginning. Tadiran also followed with Shuirim.
Rabbi Kram helped bankroll a Daf Yomi Shuir in Kiriat Ponevez nightly and perhaps that was the first Daf Yomi in Ashdod. We started with Tractate Sanhedrin but it would take 40 years for me to complete Bava Basra although some Tractates I learned many times.
Rav Yerachmiel opened up in his father’s name Yeshiva Neve Yacov and continued giving Shuirim all over including Kiriat Sefer. He was a man with boundless energy until about last Tisha B’Av when he found out that he had cancer. Because of him and his brother Avraham I had the strength to continue my fight to remain in Israel, a friend, guide and teacher.
Parsha Shemini
Last week with the new Mishkan and Ohel Moed in the middle of the camp, Moshe started dedicating the first seven days of the Cohanim. On the eight day the Cohanim were ready to set out on their own.
9:1 And it came to pass on the eighth day, that Moses called Aaron and his sons, and the elders of Israel; 2 and he said unto Aaron: 'Take thee a bull-calf for a sin-offering, and a ram for a burnt-offering, without blemish, and offer them before the LORD. 3 And unto the children of Israel thou shalt speak, saying: Take ye a he-goat for a sin-offering; and a calf and a lamb, both of the first year, without blemish, for a burnt-offering; 4 and an ox and a ram for peace-offerings, to sacrifice before the LORD; and a meal-offering mingled with oil; for to-day the LORD appears unto you.' 5 And they brought that which Moses commanded before the tent of meeting; and all the congregation drew near and stood before the LORD. 6 And Moses said: 'This is the thing which the LORD commanded that ye should do; that the glory of the LORD may appear unto you.' 7 And Moses said unto Aaron: 'Draw near unto the altar, and offer thy sin-offering, and thy burnt-offering, and make atonement for thyself, and for the people; and present the offering of the people, and make atonement for them; as the LORD commanded.' 8 So Aaron drew near unto the altar, and slew the calf of the sin-offering, which was for himself. 9 And the sons of Aaron presented the blood unto him; and he dipped his finger in the blood, and put it upon the horns of the altar, and poured out the blood at the base of the altar. 10 But the fat, and the kidneys, and the lobe of the liver of the sin-offering, he made smoke upon the altar; as the LORD commanded Moses. … 22 And Aaron lifted up his hands toward the people, and blessed them; and he came down from offering the sin-offering, and the burnt-offering, and the peace-offerings. 23 And Moses and Aaron went into the tent of meeting, and came out, and blessed the people; and the glory of the LORD appeared unto all the people. 24 And there came forth fire from before the LORD, and consumed upon the altar the burnt-offering and the fat; and when all the people saw it, they shouted, and fell on their faces.
What was commanded was pleasing and fire came out and descended and it pleased the L-RD.
10:1 And Nadav and Avihu, the sons of Aaron, took each of them his censer, and put fire therein, and laid incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them. 2 And there came forth fire from before the LORD, and devoured them, and they died before the LORD.
For they added to the Torah and did something not commanded and they were consumed.
3 Then Moses said unto Aaron: 'This is it that the LORD spoke, saying: Through them that are nigh unto Me I will be sanctified, and before all the people I will be glorified.' And Aaron held his peace.
Moshe said to Aaron that “I thought with you and/or I the altar would be sanctified” but your sons were greater for a sacrifice. So Aaron was comforted.
4 And Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel the uncle of Aaron, and said unto them: 'Draw near, carry your brethren from before the sanctuary out of the camp.' 5 So they drew near, and carried them in their tunics out of the camp, as Moses had said. 6 And Moses said unto Aaron, and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons: 'Let not the hair of your heads go loose, neither rend your clothes, that ye die not, and that He be not wroth with all the congregation; but let your brethren, the whole house of Israel, bewail the burning which the LORD hath kindled. 7 And ye shall not go out from the door of the tent of meeting, lest ye die; for the anointing oil of the LORD is upon you.' And they did according to the word of Moses.
So the Levi cousins of Aaron acted has Chevra Kedisha (burial society) and they took on the Tuma Mays of the deceased. They buried them on the 8th of Nisan but that meant that they would miss seven full clean days for a Korban Pesach on the 14th as only 6 days of the 7 of purification could occur. We shall see this when it comes to offering a Korban Pesach Shayni.
8 And the LORD spoke unto Aaron, saying: 9 'Drink no wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tent of meeting, that ye die not; it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations.
There is an implication that they had some of the libation wine and got high before offering the non-required Korban.
10 And that ye may put difference between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and the clean; 11 and that ye may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the LORD hath spoken unto them by the hand of Moses.' {P}
12 And Moses spoke unto Aaron, and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons that were left: 'Take the meal-offering that remains of the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and eat it without leaven beside the altar; for it is most holy. 13 And ye shall eat it in a holy place, because it is thy due, and thy sons' due, of the offerings of the LORD made by fire; for so I am commanded. 14 And the breast of waving and the thigh of heaving shall ye eat in a clean place; thou, and thy sons, and thy daughters with thee; for they are given as thy due, and thy sons' due, out of the sacrifices of the peace-offerings of the children of Israel. 15 The thigh of heaving and the breast of waving shall they bring with the offerings of the fat made by fire, to wave it for a wave-offering before the LORD; and it shall be thine, and thy sons' with thee, as a due for ever; as the LORD hath commanded.'
This is all part of the special command after the two brothers died.
16 And Moses diligently inquired for the goat of the sin-offering, and, behold, it was burnt; and he was angry with Eleazar and with Ithamar, the sons of Aaron that were left, saying: 17 'Wherefore have ye not eaten the sin-offering in the place of the sanctuary, seeing it is most holy, and He hath given it you to bear the iniquity of the congregation, to make atonement for them before the LORD? 18 Behold, the blood of it was not brought into the sanctuary within; ye should certainly have eaten it in the sanctuary, as I commanded.'
Why have you not fulfilled the Mitzvah of eating the Korban? Will you bring more sin upon us?
19 And Aaron spoke unto Moses: 'Behold, this day have they offered their sin-offering and their burnt-offering before the LORD, and there have befallen me such things as these; and if I had eaten the sin-offering to-day, would it have been well-pleasing in the sight of the LORD? 20 And when Moses heard that, it was well-pleasing in his sight.
Since an extraordinary event happened on the eighth day so too an extraordinary dispensation was made.
11:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses and to Aaron, saying unto them: 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying: These are the living things which ye may eat among all the beasts that are on the earth. 3 Whatsoever parts the hoof, and is wholly cloven-footed, and chews the cud, among the beasts, that may ye eat.
These animals can be domesticated
readily and are herbivorous in nature. The predecessors of the vegetarian and
vegan movement used to say “You are what you eat”. Kabbalistically there is
something to it. As the animal Neshama of an animals that hunts and is cunning
like a lion or snake is different from the Sheep or even ‘wild’ giraffe.
4 Nevertheless these shall ye not eat of them that only chew the cud, or of them that only part the hoof: the camel, because he chews the cud but parts not the hoof, he is unclean unto you.
There are a number of animals like this besides the camel that are herbivorous such as the horse, donkey, pony but they do not ruminate. The camel chews the cud and the Arabs use the milk and sell its milk to Belgium as it adds to the flavor of milk chocolate.
But it is forbidden for a ben Yisrael no matter how tasty.
5 And the rock-badger, because he chews the cud but parts not the hoof, he is unclean unto you. 6 And the hare, because she chews the cud but parts not the hoof, she is unclean unto you.
The rock badger and rabbit are similar with the exception that the natural habitat of the badger in Israel is towards the Dead Sea but with the death of some of its predators it moved as far west as the Modiin area carrying with it a disease called “Shoshana Yericho” carried by flies. Shoshana is another word for rose and produces a rose like infection and fever. The Torah forbade them and even if they did not bring diseases like our domesticated rabbits, they are forbidden to eat.
7 And the swine, because he parts the hoof, and is cloven-footed, but chews not the cud, he is unclean unto you.
The pig is forbidden and is the only animals in the world that has cloven feet and does not ruminate. The Tapir that looks like and I am told tastes like a pig is kosher. The pig often lies on the ground with the cloven hooves forward to sort of trick us.
8 Of their flesh ye shall not eat, and their carcasses ye shall not touch; they are unclean unto you.
Of all the animals in all the continents only these 4 meet the specified criteria the others are either certainly kosher or certainly non-kosher.
9 These may ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them may ye eat. 10 And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that swarm in the waters, and of all the living creatures that are in the waters, they are a detestable thing unto you,
11 and they shall be a detestable thing unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, and their carcasses ye shall have in detestation. 12 Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that is a detestable thing unto you.
In France, my wife saw and smelled Lobster in the supermarket. The creature was detestable to her even without the Pasuk. As a former Reform Jew, the creature can be prepared to have a nice taste with a nice sauce but we don’t eat it because the Torah forbids it and that is good enough for me. Kosher fish can be prepared with various spices to takes like shrimps and have enough of a similar taste that memory makes it so without having to violate anything. Similar is smoked turkey and eggs fried crisp like bacon.
13 And these ye shall have in detestation among the fowls; they shall not be eaten, they are a detestable thing: the great vulture, and the bearded vulture, and the ospray; 14 and the kite, and the falcon after its kinds; 15 every raven after its kinds; 16 and the ostrich, and the night-hawk, and the sea-mew, and the hawk after its kinds; 17 and the little owl, and the cormorant, and the great owl; 18 and the horned owl, and the pelican, and the carrion-vulture; 19 and the stork, and the heron after its kinds, and the hoopoe, and the bat.
Similar to the mammals, the birds that prey upon others are forbidden. The Bat is similar to a mouse or rat and not a bird but because it flies it is forbidden and can be classified with going on fours.
20 All winged swarming things that go upon all fours are a detestable thing unto you.
Normal insects that do not jump like the crickets, locusts, etc.
21 Yet these may ye eat of all winged swarming things that go upon all fours, which have jointed legs above their feet, wherewith to leap upon the earth; 22 even these of them ye may eat: the locust after its kinds, and the bald locust after its kinds, and the cricket after its kinds, and the grasshopper after its kinds.
23 But all winged swarming things, which have four feet, are a detestable thing unto you. 24 And by these ye shall become unclean; whosoever touches the carcass of them shall be unclean until even. 25 And whosoever bears aught of the carcass of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even.
Bats and flying squirrels are perhaps the thought here as there is more that an olive’s bulk of size to make Tamay.
26 Every beast which parts the hoof, but is not cloven footed, nor chews the cud, is unclean unto you; every one that touches them shall be unclean. 27 And whatsoever goeth upon its paws, among all beasts that go on all fours, they are unclean unto you; whoso touches their carcass shall be unclean until the even. 28 And he that bears the carcass of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even; they are unclean unto you.
Back in my Yeshiva days, we discussing playing inside the walls on Yom Tov Baseball but not US Football because it uses a pigskin.
29 And these are they which are unclean unto you among the swarming things that swarm upon the earth: the weasel, and the mouse, and the great lizard after its kinds, 30 and the gecko, and the land-crocodile, and the lizard, and the sand-lizard, and the chameleon. 31 These are they which are unclean to you among all that swarm; whosoever doth touch them, when they are dead, shall be unclean until the even.

32 And upon whatsoever any of them, when they are dead, doth fall, it shall be unclean; whether it be any vessel of wood, or raiment, or skin, or sack, whatsoever vessel it be, wherewith any work is done, it must be put into water, and it shall be unclean until the even; then shall it be clean. 33 And every earthen vessel whereinto any of them falls, whatsoever is in it shall be unclean, and it ye shall break. 34 All food therein which may be eaten, that on which water cometh, shall be unclean; and all drink in every such vessel that may be drunk shall be unclean. 35 And everything whereupon any part of their carcass falleth shall be unclean; whether oven, or range for pots, it shall be broken in pieces; they are unclean, and shall be unclean unto you. 36 Nevertheless a fountain or a cistern wherein is a gathering of water shall be clean; but he who touches their carcass shall be unclean. 37 And if aught of their carcass fall upon any sowing seed which is to be sown, it is clean. 38 But if water be put upon the seed, and aught of their carcass fall thereon, it is unclean unto you. 39 And if any beast, of which ye may eat, die, he that touches the carcass thereof shall be unclean until the even. 40 And he that eats of the carcass of it shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even; he also that bears the carcass of it shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even.
In short no dead parts of live animals, a Nevaillah that dies of itself or a Trafe torn by beasts.
41 And every swarming thing that swarms upon the earth is a detestable thing; it shall not be eaten. 42 Whatsoever goes upon the belly, and whatsoever goes upon all fours, or whatsoever hath many feet, even all swarming things that swarm upon the earth, them ye shall not eat; for they are a detestable thing. 43 Ye shall not make yourselves detestable with any swarming thing that swarms, neither shall ye make yourselves unclean with them, that ye should be defiled thereby. 44 For I am the LORD your God; sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy; for I am holy; neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of swarming thing that moves upon the earth. 45 For I am the LORD that brought you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God; ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy. 46 This is the law of the beast, and of the fowl, and of every living creature that moves in the waters, and of every creature that swarms upon the earth; 47 to make a difference between the unclean and the clean, and between the living thing that may be eaten and the living thing that may not be eaten.

PART ONE –Biography
Rabbi Baruch-Shalom Schneersohn [1805 –16 Shvat1869] was the firstborn of the 3rdRebbe of Chabad, the Tzemach Tzedek, and the great-great-grandfather of the 7thRebbe (1902-1994).
R` Yosef-Yitzchak Schneersohn (the Rayatz, the 6thRebbe) wrote of him: “The Alter (1st–lit. Old) Rebbe had a great fondness for my great-uncle, the Rabash. From the time he was a tiny child in cheder(schoolroom) and onwards, he would have him over to his house every day, and from when he turned six, tutored him personally in various subjects. When the Alter Rebbe had to flee from Napoleon [who was pursuing him personally–in 1812], he kept the Rabash always by his side, including sleeping in the Rebbe’s room.
”The Rayatz wrote that the Rabash also once told his father (R. Shalom-Ber Schneersohn (the 5thRebbe):“Starting with that bitter evening of Thursday, 25 Menachem Av, when word reached us that Napoleon was advancing triumphantly towards Liadi, until his last day on earth at the close of Shabbat before the melancholy day of Tevet [when the 1stRebbe left the physical world], I merited to spend 142 consecutive days and nights in the company of my great-grandfather, the Alter Rebbe From that grievous day on, the Rabash was heart-broken.”
As an adult, he was renowned for his extreme humility. While each of his five brothers became the head of a Chassidic community, he remained inflexible in his determination not to accept any position [saying he knows too well from his early years with the Alter Rebbe what a genuine Rebbe is], even though he was eminently qualified.
After his passing, numerous manuscripts that he had authored came to light, containing writings on both nigleh [‘the revealed’ Torah –primarily Talmud and Jewish Law] and on chasidut. When his will was unsealed and his manuscripts were read, all were dumbstruck by the evidence of his profound intelligence and wisdom.

One year, Rabbi Baruch-Shalom Schneersohn (referred to as the Rabash) attended the brit mila of a grandson in the village of Slavat. After, at the celebratory meal, a careen of meat stew was brought to the table and placed in front of him. Before he was able to dip in the ladle, a spider descended into the careen. He ordered that the large bowl should be removed from the table and the spider extracted, and then a fresh bowl be brought in its place. But a spider also descended into the second serving bowl, and again he ordered that it be removed and another fresh bowl be brought out. But this third bowl was also ‘invaded’ by a spider.
Eye-witnesses to the event insist forcefully that it was clearly three different spiders.
The Rabash asked the ones who had provided the food where they had obtained the meat. They replied that they had slaughtered a lamb for the sake of the circumcision Mitzvah Meal. When he next asked from where they purchased the lamb, they said from a certain non-Jew in a certain nearby village. The Rabash requested that they please ask the man to come to speak with him. They did so, and when the man arrived the Rabash asked him if there was anything unusual about this lamb, and make sure to tell him the truth. “I shall tell you the truth,” declared the gentile. “This lamb was ‘orphaned’ from its mother, so I took him to a sow to suckle. And indeed, he stayed with her and she fed him until he was grown.”
Upon hearing this, the Rabash commanded that all the vessels in which the lamb meat was cooked should be broken.1
The shamesh (attendant/shul manager), Avraham-Eliyahu, from whom we know this story, was a simple, sincere, pious Jew, whom no one ever suspected of being untruthful. He would tell what he personally saw that day with great enthusiasm, including all the details. Once again was proven the Talmudic dictum,2
