Parsha Bamidbar Part 2, Introduction to Parsha Naso, Story, War in Israel

Last week I ended the post with the following Psak Din. And it justifies explaining where it came from as I don’t make things up on Hilchos Shabbos out of thin air. “Israelis keep a light on in the shelter and it is permissible Erev Shabbos to light a radio or TV before Shabbos and not turn if off for real time info if you are under attack just keep a low volume so that it does not disturb the Shabbos atmosphere with your apartment. It has a psychological calming effect and we do not need PTSD in Eretz Yisrael.

During the Gulf War there was a Heter for turning on ‘silent’ the radio by the Chief Rabbinate. The Chief Rabbis at the time were Rabbi Avraham Shapira and Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu. The continues were that the radio was a special station which went off only when there was a siren to warn people. So I had one in my bed room and one in the shelter. During the run to the shelter, we would hear the spokesman for the IDF, Nachum Shai speak and it calmed us down. But one time, the radio went off as he was on his way to check damage one was left with tension. People running to shelters are in panic. PTSD of the Yom Kippur War was caused by soldiers being taken from home and the Synagogue on the holiest Shabbos (Yom Kippur fell on Shabbos that year) and brought to a battle field with injured and dead near the soldier. People taken from a complete civilian life at home to their house being under fire could cause PTSD.

People in this generation are more in need of information than the people in 1991. By allowing more information and people with the ability to see a broadcast until the end of the section on the attack allows people to calm down. All the connections are prepared before Shabbos on ‘low’ volume but not able to hear it in other rooms. There is a problem with a “Mamad” shelter that children sleep in and one might want to put a chair with an object that covers the screen from the children or just have a radio on the Channel Bet or the Army Station for updates on the lowest volume so as not to really disturb the sleep of the children. In such a case one cannot adjust the volume.

Parsha Bamidbar Part 2

When we took the Census, the tribes were counted independently and part of Machane, we did not take into consideration the tribe of Levi. Going back to Shemos we see that the more the people were afflicted the more they grew. In Beresheis Vayigash towards the end, Yosef put a tax on the people but the priests were exempt. Levi was the priests and Leviim for service unto the L-RD. Since they were not afflicted they did not grow.

If we assume equal number of boys and girls born, then there would be 54 or 55 children for family based on the amount of first born and the amount of members of the tribes recorded. There is a possibility that the number was off because Pharaoh called that the number of males be thrown into the river and most were first born at that time.

3:1 Now these are the generations of Aaron and Moses in the day that the LORD spoke with Moses in mount Sinai. 2 And these are the names of the sons of Aaron: Nadab the first-born, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. 3 These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the priests that were anointed, whom he consecrated to minister in the priest's office. 4 And Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD, when they offered strange fire before the LORD, in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children; and Eleazar and Ithamar ministered in the priest's office in the presence of Aaron their father.

Now there are a number of points here. First of all who are the Cohanim and at this point as we start dedicating the Mishkan there are five. Pinchas is not mentioned nor the Cohanim of his generation as they were not born yet in my humble opinion. Nadav and Avihu were not married and one is not too holy not to marry.

5 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 6 'Bring the tribe of Levi near, and set them before Aaron the priest, that they may minister unto him. 7 And they shall keep his charge, and the charge of the whole congregation before the tent of meeting, to do the service of the tabernacle. 8 And they shall keep all the furniture of the tent of meeting, and the charge of the children of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle. 9 And thou shalt give the Levites unto Aaron and to his sons; they are wholly given unto him from the children of Israel. 10 And thou shalt appoint Aaron and his sons, that they may keep their priesthood; and the common man that draws nigh shall be put to death.'

The whole tribe of Levi should be subservient to the priests. Originally the first born were to do this job, but after the golden calf and some first born participated, the Leviim too over.

11 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 12 'And I, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel instead of every first-born that opens the womb among the children of Israel; and the Levites shall be Mine; 13 for all the first-born are Mine: on the day that I smote all the first-born in the land of Egypt I hallowed unto Me all the first-born in Israel, both man and beast, Mine they shall be: I am the LORD.'

Still the first born shall have an extra degree of holiness.

14 And the LORD spoke unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, saying: 15 'Number the children of Levi by their fathers' houses, by their families; every male from a month old and upward shalt thou number them.' 16 And Moses numbered them according to the word of the LORD, as he was commanded. 17 And these were the sons of Levi by their names: Gershon, and Kohath, and Merari. 18 And these are the names of the sons of Gershon by their families: Libni and Shimei. 19 And the sons of Kohath by their families: Amram and Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel. 20 And the sons of Merari by their families: Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of the Levites according to their fathers' houses.

This is the priority of Sheves Levi according to the order of birth of the sons.

21 Of Gershon was the family of the Libnites, and the family of the Shimeites; these are the families of the Gershonites. 22 Those that were numbered of them, according to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, even those that were numbered of them were seven thousand and five hundred. 23 The families of the Gershonites were to pitch behind the tabernacle westward;

They were on the side where Yosef and Benyamin were but in the middle.

24 the prince of the fathers' house of the Gershonites being Eliasaph the son of Lael, 25 and the charge of the sons of Gershon in the tent of meeting the tabernacle, and the Tent, the covering thereof, and the screen for the door of the tent of meeting, 26 and the hangings of the court, and the screen for the door of the court--which is by the tabernacle, and by the altar, round about--and the cords of it, even whatsoever pertains to the service thereof.

The sons of Gershon would take care of the curtains and screens of the Mishkan.

27 And of Kohath was the family of the Amramites, and the family of the Izharites, and the family of the Hebronites, and the family of the Uzzielites; these are the families of the Kohathites: 28 according to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, eight thousand and six hundred, keepers of the charge of the sanctuary. 29 The families of the sons of Kohath were to pitch on the side of the tabernacle southward;

They were near Reuven, Shimon and Gad and Korach influenced his neighbors in a negative way.

30 the prince of the fathers' house of the families of the Kohathites being Elizaphan the son of Uzziel, 31 and their charge the ark, and the table, and the candlestick, and the altars, and the vessels of the sanctuary wherewith the priests minister, and the screen, and all that pertaineth to the service thereof; 32 Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest being prince of the princes of the Levites, and having the oversight of them that keep the charge of the sanctuary.

Because they were dealing with the holiest items, the deputy Cohain Gadol was in charge of them.

33 Of Merari was the family of the Mahlites, and the family of the Mushites; these are the families of Merari. 34 And those that were numbered of them, according to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, were six thousand and two hundred; 35 the prince of the fathers' house of the families of Merari being Zuriel the son of Abihail; they were to pitch on the side of the tabernacle northward;

They were in the north next to the tribes of Dan, Asher and Naphtali.

36 the appointed charge of the sons of Merari being the boards of the tabernacle, and the bars thereof, and the pillars thereof, and the sockets thereof, and all the instruments thereof, and all that pertaineth to the service thereof; 37 and the pillars of the court round about, and their sockets, and their pins, and their cords. 38 And those that were to pitch before the tabernacle eastward, before the tent of meeting toward the sunrising, were Moses, and Aaron and his sons, keeping the charge of the sanctuary, even the charge for the children of Israel; and the common man that drew nigh was to be put to death. 39 All that were numbered of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron numbered at the commandment of the LORD, by their families, all the males from a month old and upward, were twenty and two thousand.

Moshe and Aaron were in the east next to the tribe of Yehuda, Zevulun and Yissachar. These tribes would be the first into battle and needed the immediate backing of the Cohain Gadol and Prophet.

40 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Number all the first-born males of the children of Israel from a month old and upward, and take the number of their names. 41 And thou shalt take the Levites for Me, even the LORD, instead of all the first-born among the children of Israel; and the cattle of the Levites instead of all the firstlings among the cattle of the children of Israel.' 42 And Moses numbered, as the LORD commanded him, all the first-born among the children of Israel. 43 And all the first-born males according to the number of names, from a month old and upward, of those that were numbered of them, were twenty and two thousand two hundred and threescore and thirteen.

The original redemption was a Bechor took a Levi in a lottery. The ones that were left over had to redeem themselves with 5 shekels.

44 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 45 'Take the Levites instead of all the first-born among the children of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of their cattle; and the Levites shall be Mine, even the LORD'S. 46 And as for the redemption of the two hundred and three score and thirteen of the first-born of the children of Israel, that are over and above the number of the Levites, 47 thou shalt take five shekels apiece by the poll; after the shekel of the sanctuary shalt thou take them--the shekel is twenty gerahs. 48 And thou shalt give the money wherewith they that remain over of them are redeemed unto Aaron and to his sons.' 49 And Moses took the redemption-money from them that were over and above them that were redeemed by the Levites; 50 from the first-born of the children of Israel took he the money: a thousand three hundred and threescore and five shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary. 51 And Moses gave the redemption-money unto Aaron and to his sons, according to the word of the LORD, as the LORD commanded Moses.

For maintenance of the Mishkan and even the wear and tear on the garments of the Cohanim.

4:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying: 2 'Take the sum of the sons of Kohath from among the sons of Levi, by their families, by their fathers' houses,

I have had a question for years that might have bothered you too. Why is one third of the Leviim mentioned specifically by the sages in Parsha Bamidbar and two thirds in Parsha Naso? Rabbi Mimran Shlita referred to this section. It says ‘from among the sons of Levi’. The reason is very simple. To take care of curtains, screens etc. or planks and the bases etc. required purity and holiness. However, to carry even wrapped up candle sticks, snuff boxes, incense holders, the tables, golden Mizbayach, etc. needed extra Kedusha and purity. Therefore they were singled out over the rest of the Leviim.

3 from thirty years old and upward even until fifty years old, all that enter upon the service, to do work in the tent of meeting. 4 This is the service of the sons of Kohath in the tent of meeting, about the most holy things: 5 when the camp sets forward, Aaron shall go in, and his sons, and they shall take down the veil of the screen, and cover the ark of the testimony with it; 6 and shall put thereon a covering of giraffe skin, and shall spread over it a cloth all of blue, and shall set the staves thereof. 7 And upon the table of showbread they shall spread a cloth of blue, and put thereon the dishes, and the pans, and the bowls, and the jars wherewith to pour out; and the continual bread shall remain thereon. 8 And they shall spread upon them a cloth of scarlet, and cover the same with a covering of giraffe skin, and shall set the staves thereof. 9 And they shall take a cloth of blue, and cover the candlestick of the light, and its lamps, and its tongs, and its snuffdishes, and all the oil vessels thereof, wherewith they minister unto it. 10 And they shall put it and all the vessels thereof within a covering of giraffe skin, and shall put it upon a bar. 11 And upon the golden altar they shall spread a cloth of blue, and cover it with a covering giraffe skin, and shall set the staves thereof. 12 And they shall take all the vessels of ministry, wherewith they minister in the sanctuary, and put them in a cloth of blue, and cover them with a covering of giraffe skin, and shall put them on a bar.

I assume that pelts from giraffe skins were the most valuable of skins that were kosher. For I am sure that lion, panther, jackal skins etc. from Africa existed in Egypt and some people had them. However, of the kosher skins the least valuable were sheep and goats followed by cattle and then deer, and other non-domestic kosher animals. Due to the holiness, these items were wrapped in the valuable giraffe skins. We see below ashes wrapped in purple etc.

13 And they shall take away the ashes from the altar, and spread a purple cloth thereon. 14 And they shall put upon it all the vessels thereof, wherewith they minister about it, the fire-pans, the flesh-hooks, and the shovels, and the basins, all the vessels of the altar; and they shall spread upon it a covering of giraffe skin, and set the staves thereof. 15 And when Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the holy furniture, and all the holy vessels, as the camp is to set forward--after that, the sons of Kohath shall come to bear them; but they shall not touch the holy things, lest they die. These things are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tent of meeting. 16 And the charge of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest shall be the oil for the light, and the sweet incense, and the continual meal-offering, and the anointing oil: he shall have the charge of all the tabernacle, and of all that therein is, whether it be the sanctuary, or the furniture thereof.'

Aaron and sons would wrap the holy items and not the Leviim as they had to take or cover the holy of holies etc.

17 And the LORD spoke unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying: 18 'Cut ye not off the tribe of the families of the Kohathites from among the Levites; 19 but thus do unto them, that they may live, and not die, when they approach unto the most holy things: Aaron and his sons shall go in, and appoint them every one to his service and to his burden; 20 but they shall not go in to see the holy things as they are being covered, lest they die.'

The Bnei Kohath would be in charge of physically moving the wrapped holy items, but the wrapping was done by Cohanim so that the ordinary Leviim would not die.

Parsha Naso

Parsha Naso is the largest Parsha in the Torah with 186 Pasukim. It has the continuation of Parsha Bamidbar and the workings of two thirds of the Leviim with the cloth and boards of the Mishkan and their service. There are the sections of the wife that strays from her husband with a lover called the Sotah and the Nazir. There is also the Priestly Blessings and the gifts of the Nasi of each Tribe given from the first to the Twelfth of Nissan 2449 during which the tragedy of the two sons of Aaron occurred. We repeat the Pasukim of gift of the Nasi of each tribe equally time after time. “his offering was one silver dish, the weight thereof was a hundred and thirty shekels, one silver basin of seventy shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary; both of them full of fine flour mingled with oil for a meal-offering; 56 one golden pan of ten shekels, full of incense; 57 one young bullock, one ram, one he-lamb of the first year, for a burnt-offering; 58 one male of the goats for a sin-offering; 59 and for the sacrifice of peace-offerings, two oxen, five rams, five he-goats, five he-lamb of the first year.

For each tribe is equal before HASHEM.

The Incredible Blessing by Rabbi Yerachmiel Tilles.

It was one of the festival days of Passover at a synagogue in Westchester County, NY. The rabbi of the shul, a Chabad emissary, was standing near the front door, warmly greeting each arriving member of the congregation.

He looks at his watch. It's 9.30, and everyone is still waiting for a tenth to complete the minyan -- a familiar story for Chabad houses across the world.

Finally, a man of about 80 years walks into the shul. The Rabbi is overjoyed to see him. The man is a regular, and every Yom Tov it is the same story: although he is often the 10th, yet he always leaves before the blessing of the Kohanim at the end of the Musaf service.[1]

The rabbi is each time puzzled by this man's strange behavior.

This time he determines to question him about it. "Sir, can we have a chat before the prayers start - that is, if you don't mind. Please tell me, why do you always leave before Birchat Kohanim?"

The man obliges. He first rolls up his sleeve to reveal a tattooed number on his arm, and then proceeds to tell his story:

The year was approximately 1942. The setting was in one of the barracks in Auschwitz.

In the middle of the night, a group gathers together. An elderly Jew everyone referred to as 'The Rabbi' beckons everyone closer.

Everyone huddles around. He whispers, "Friends, we need to experience going our going out of Egypt this year, our very own Pesach Seder in Auschwitz!"

Everyone was thinking the same thing, "Has the Rabbi finally snapped?"

"Look," he continued, "we don't need 'marror' ('the bitter')[2], this place is full of bitterness. But if we could at least get matzah…. Yankel, do you think you can manage to get two kilos of flour?"

Yankel somehow gets the flour. 'The Rabbi' meticulously watches over the first matzah ever made in Auschwitz. It's Erev Pesach afternoon, only a few hours till Seder night. Everyone is looking forward to being part of a unique Seder.

When night falls, Chayim, who is keeping watch, makes sure nobody is around before he gives the all-clear.

Jews from the surrounding barracks quickly scurry in to crowd around 'The Rabbi,' who makes the blessings over the matzah. Everyone receives a small piece to nibble and quickly swallow. Then they take turns reciting the Hagadah, as much as they can recall by heart.

Suddenly, there is a loud thud! Dogs start barking. A group of soldiers burst in through the door.

Their officer-in-charge glares at each of the Jews sitting on the floor. He yells, "Who is responsible?" If you tell me now, the rest of you will live; but if you don't...."

'The Rabbi' instantly raises his hand. "I am. I am the one responsible for all of this."

The officer shouts, "Tomorrow I will shoot this man dead where all the Jews in Auschwitz can see him!"

The next day, Nazi soldiers tie him up and throw his battered body to the ground in full view of all the Jews prisoners, who were forced to assemble for the occasion. Their eyes are frozen to the center of the muddy grounds where 'The Rabbi' lies in pain. The officer reaches for his gun.

'The Rabbi,' with all the courage and strength he can muster, cries out, 'Please grant me my last words!"

The soldiers, officers, and senior camp administrators laugh mockingly at him. The officer with the gun chuckles menacingly. "What do you want to say? What do you have? Nothing!"

'The Rabbi' bravely struggles to stand. He exclaims, "That's where you are wrong. What I can do is bless my brothers!"

Then, before he can be interrupted, he begins Birchat Kohanim:
"May G-d bless you and guard you.
"May G-d make His countenance shine upon and be gracious to you.
"May G-d turn his countenance toward you and grant you peace."

The man paused his story for a few moments, then stated firmly that he had been present at these events, and that he was so shaken by them that he felt compelled to change. He made an oath to himself that if he survived, he would lead a more traditional Jewish life.

Thankfully, he did survive.

One time, a few years after he was redeemed from Auschwitz, he went into a non-kosher restaurant and ordered lunch. Suddenly, he had a flashback back to that Passover in Auschwitz. He clearly pictured 'The Rabbi' and his emotional priestly blessing before he was murdered. Quickly he left money on the table for his yet-to-be-served order and fled the restaurant.

When his daughter asked for his consent for her to marry a non-Jew, the same flashback occurred. He couldn't run, but he did decide to further turn his life around.

"So, you see, Rabbi," he concluded his explanation, "the memory of the priestly blessing that was given by that holy martyr in Auschwitz still is with me -- and to me, no other priestly blessing can ever be its equal!"

[1]Outside of Israel, the Kohens in the congregation recite the Priestly Blessing towards the end of the Cantor's repetition of the Mussaf prayer on the first two and last two days of Pesach and Sukkot, the two days of Shavuot, and on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. [In Israel it is recited much more often.]

Summary of Day Seven before Yom Tov in Israel. At night the center of the country was attacked and Beer Sheva. A part of a rocket or iron dome fell as far east as Moshav Yisodot on Road 3. Mortars during the day towards the environs close to Gaza with some rockets. In Ashdod, a rocket fell in between houses and some families went further north or to Yerushalayim from towns as far north as Petach Tikva. In Ashkelon a Rav of a Congregation fled north. His roof was hit and the wall of the Synagogue has a gapping hole in it. Volunteers were cleaning up the mess. The Sefarim and Sifrei Torah were in tack.

Ashkelon during Protective Edge had 820 or 30 rockets in 51 days they are now closing in on 1000 or surpassed that. This war is more intense in the south. Many families are on Kibbutzim or with relations up north from the close to Gaza area as mortars and rockets are almost non-stop. Although as the underground metro system of Gaza is hit, less rockets are sent as their storage and production facilities are hit. Some commanders have been hit or killed and others are fleeing in various disguises. IDF needs another 48 hours to hit the metro system near Egypt to finish off the tunnels. Guardian of the Wall days nine and ten

The European Governments for a change are more pro-Israel after experiencing the Arab Refugees and the problems they brought. Biden, on the other hand, is influenced by the Squad and he does not have a real Evangelistic base or support. In the Ramallah area yesterday live fire was turned on at the IDF and two soldiers were shot in their legs and an Arab was killed by return fire. https://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/306387

Days ten and a good deal of eleven of Guardians of the Wall

Miracles Alert.

This morning some of the soldiers around Gaza were treated to a little tour of an area. The truck with a top like a bus (Tiyulit – dangerous for top heavy and not so stable – forbidden in the US and Canada) was hit by an anti-tank rocket 30 seconds after the last soldier left before the driver to return to his seat. One soldier got a small amount of shrapnel removed on the spot. Had it been a minute earlier the story would not have been so happy.

A home in Ashkelon was hit. The dog hit under the stairwell and the family in the Mamad. The building is a total loss but the dog is still tail wagging the family unscratched. Photos: https://www.ynetnews.com/article/PD7X4BDR1

Ceasefire on day twelve. We were told that if we want to replace 10,000 iron dome rockets we should ceasefire. A lot of things behind the scenes that the public does not know. We gave Hamas such a beating that they did not in their tradition hit Tel Aviv or Yerushalayim in days. Thousands of rocket launching stands were taken out and each contained at least 4 to 6 rockets that could be reused. Most turned into one-time launchers.
