Parsha Chukkas
The rebellions are finished the Bnei Yisrael is about to wander in the wilderness for 38 years until close to Pesach 2488 and their entrance as a powerful military machine into Eretz Yisrael. One of the subjects that the Torah did not touch unto now in detail was Tuma and Tahara. We had the Zav and Zava, the Metzora, now our subject is the Avi Avos HaTuma or a dead body.
19:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying: 2 This is the statute of the law which the LORD hath commanded, saying: Speak unto the children of Israel, that they bring thee a red heifer, faultless, wherein is no blemish, and upon which never came yoke.
Shlomo HaMelech could not make sense of this. We can make up an answer about the Egel HaZahav and the Parah but the only sense is that it is a Chuk from HASHEM and that is why we do it. Other things like sending a bird away from the Leper or the goat for Azazel on Yom Kippur. These are laws from G-D. Just like a soldier in the army does not question the order of the general, so we do not question the orders here.
3 And ye shall give her unto Eleazar the priest, and she shall be brought forth without the camp, and she shall be slain before his face.
The Parah is slaughtered outside of the camp.
4 And Eleazar the priest shall take of her blood with his finger, and sprinkle of her blood toward the front of the tent of meeting seven times.
He is outside of the camp but either knows the direction of or can see the Ohel Moed. The sprinkling of the blood is 7 times.
5 And the heifer shall be burnt in his sight; her skin, and her flesh, and her blood, with her dung, shall be burnt. 6 And the priest shall take cedar-wood, and hyssop, and scarlet, and cast it into the midst of the burning of the heifer.
The Hyssop instead of using the usual way of sprinkling blood is thrown in and burnt. Everything is burnt even the dung that is not the usual case in Korbanos
7 Then the priest shall wash his clothes, and he shall bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he may come into the camp, and the priest shall be unclean until the even. 8 And he that burned her shall wash his clothes in water, and bathe his flesh in water, and shall be unclean until the even.
He is clean but becomes Tumay.
9 And a man that is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer, and lay them up without the camp in a clean place, and it shall be kept for the congregation of the children of Israel for a water of sprinkling; it is a purification from sin.
The Tahor who gathers the ashes becomes Tumay but these ashes will purify Tumay Meis.
10 And he that gathers the ashes of the heifer shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even; and it shall be unto the children of Israel, and unto the stranger that sojourns among them, for a statute forever.
After sundown, he goes to the Mikvah and returns back to camp as if nothing happened..
11 He that touches the dead, even any man's dead body, shall be unclean seven days; 12 the same shall purify himself therewith on the third day and on the seventh day, and he shall be clean; but if he purify not himself the third day and the seventh day, he shall not be clean. 13 Whosoever touches the dead, even the body of any man that is dead, and purifies not himself--he hath defiled the tabernacle of the LORD--that soul shall be cut off from Israel; because the water of sprinkling was not dashed against him, he shall be unclean; his uncleanness is yet upon him.
Tuma of a dead person is the highest form of Tuma. It takes the ashes of the Parah and the spring of running water on the 3rd and 7th day to purify him. This is no trivia Tuma.
14 This is the law: when a man dies in a tent, every one that cometh into the tent, and everything that is in the tent, shall be unclean seven days.
The Rabbis make a Drush from this and says that if a man wants to learn Torah, he should be like dead to the world 7 days in his tent.
15 And every open vessel, which hath no covering close-bound upon it, is unclean. 16 And whosoever in the open field touches one that is slain with a sword, or one that dies of himself, or a bone of a man, or a grave, shall be unclean seven days.
There is no difference between a full or partially body but if the bone has no flesh on it and has deteriorated until calcium dust and unrecognizable.
17 And for the unclean they shall take of the ashes of the burning of the purification from sin, and running water shall be put thereto in a vessel. 18 And a clean person shall take hyssop, and dip it in the water, and sprinkle it upon the tent, and upon all the vessels, and upon the persons that were there, and upon him that touched the bone, or the slain, or the dead, or the grave. 19 And the clean person shall sprinkle upon the unclean on the third day, and on the seventh day; and on the seventh day he shall purify him; and he shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and shall be clean at even. 20 But the man that shall be unclean, and shall not purify himself, that soul shall be cut off from the midst of the assembly, because he hath defiled the sanctuary of the LORD; the water of sprinkling hath not been dashed against him: he is unclean.
Tuma of Meis who does not purify himself does not get Kares on the spot. However, he cannot enter the Mikdash and he cuts himself off as he cannot eat a Korban Pesach etc. So things must be taken in proportion.
21 And it shall be a perpetual statute unto them; and he that sprinkles the water of sprinkling shall wash his clothes; and he that touches the water of sprinkling shall be unclean until even. 22 And whatsoever the unclean person touches shall be unclean; and the soul that touches him shall be unclean until even.
By the evening of the 8th day, he is pure and re-enter the Temple or eat the Korban Pesach if it is just in time.
20:1 And the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, came into the wilderness of Zin in the first month; and the people abode in Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and was buried there.
First Miriam died and nobody knew that they had water on her merit.
2 And there was no water for the congregation; and they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron.
It was because Miriam waited on the Nile to see what would happen to baby Moshe that the congregation had water. Now that she passed on they had no water.
3 And the people strove with Moses, and spoke, saying: 'Would that we had perished when our brethren perished before the LORD!
They are starting their 40th year in the wilderness. Between Korach and now 38 years have passed. Moshe is 119years and Aaron close to 123 years old.
4 And why have ye brought the assembly of the LORD into this wilderness, to die there, we and our cattle? 5 And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in unto this evil place? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink.' 6 And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the tent of meeting, and fell upon their faces; and the glory of the LORD appeared unto them.
Unlike the earlier rebellions, this was one of thirst in the 39th year after the Exodus. Most of the soldiers did not remember Mitzrayim.
7 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 8 'Take the rod, and assemble the congregation, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes, that it give forth its water; and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock; so thou shalt give the congregation and their cattle drink.' 9 And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as He commanded him. 10 And Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said unto them: 'Hear now, ye rebels; are we to bring you forth water out of this rock?' 11 And Moses lifted up his hand, and smote the rock with his rod twice; and water came forth abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their cattle.
Moshe spoke to the rock as told, but only a trickle came out. So he thought without following the new instructions that he had to strike the rock and he did so not once but twice and the big Kiddush HASHEM that should have come out from just talking did not happen and for this, Moshe lost his ability to enter into the land.
12 And the LORD said unto Moses and Aaron: 'Because ye believed not in Me, to sanctify Me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.'
If you and I on our level miss out on a Kiddush HASHEM perhaps we messed things up but will not be punished, but Moshe gets punished on his level.
13 These are the waters of Meribah, where the children of Israel strove with the LORD, and He was sanctified in them.
But both Moshe and Aaron would not enter the land.
14 And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh unto the king of Edom: 'Thus says thy brother Israel: Thou know all the travail that hath befallen us; 15 how our fathers went down into Egypt, and we dwelt in Egypt a long time; and the Egyptians dealt ill with us, and our fathers; 16 and when we cried unto the LORD, He heard our voice, and sent an angel, and brought us forth out of Egypt; and, behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the uttermost of thy border.
Kadesh or perhaps the modern Kadesh Barnea is between the area of Sde Boker and the Egyptian Border but is still quite a bit north and west of what we call the mountains of Edom. What must have been was the extension of these mountains north past the modern Aliyah to Mitzpe Rimon. Based on modern names of places like Di-Zahav it would be closer to Eilat as Aqaba is the port of Edom.
17 Let us pass, I pray thee, through thy land; we will not pass through field or through vineyard, neither will we drink of the water of the wells; we will go along the king's highway, we will not turn aside to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed thy border.' 18 And Edom said unto him: 'Thou shalt not pass through me, lest I come out with the sword against thee.' 19 And the children of Israel said unto him: 'We will go up by the highway; and if we drink of thy water, I and my cattle, then will I give the price thereof; let me only pass through on my feet; there is no hurt.' 20 And he said: 'Thou shalt not pass through.' And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand. 21 Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border; wherefore Israel turned away from him.
Since Edom came from Yitzchak and Avraham, they had merits and Yisrael was told to turn away no semblance of fratricide.
22 And they journeyed from Kadesh; and the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, came unto mount Hor. 23 And the LORD spoke unto Moses and Aaron in mount Hor, by the border of the land of Edom, saying:
Our Parsha just dealt with the death of Miriam that was hard enough on Eretz Yisrael but now Aaron was to go.
24 'Aaron shall be gathered unto his people; for he shall not enter into the land which I have given unto the children of Israel, because ye rebelled against My word at the waters of Meribah. 25 Take Aaron and Eleazar his son, and bring them up unto mount Hor. 26 And strip Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son; and Aaron shall be gathered unto his people, and shall die there.' 27 And Moses did as the LORD commanded; and they went up into mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation. 28 And Moses stripped Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son; and Aaron died there in the top of the mount; and Moses and Eleazar came down from the mount. 29 And when all the congregation saw that Aaron was dead, they wept for Aaron thirty days, even all the house of Israel.
Aaron sort of died by a kiss from G-D and the transfer to Eleazar was peaceful and without Tuma and when Moshe and Eleazar saw that Aaron stopped breathing they closed the cave where he was buried and neither became Tuma shel Meis.
21:1 And the Canaanite, the king of Arad, who dwelt in the South, heard tell that Israel came by the way of Atharim; and he fought against Israel, and took some of them captive. 2 And Israel vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said: 'If Thou wilt indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.' 3 And the LORD hearkened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities; and the name of the place was called Hormah.
Those who know where Tel Arad is (5 to 10 km west of the modern Arad) and they were from the seed of Amalek but disguised themselves (Medrash) and attacked Yisrael by tongue of the Dead Sea.
4 And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way to the Red Sea, to compass the land of Edom; and the soul of the people became impatient because of the way. 5 And the people spoke against God, and against Moses: 'Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, and there is no water; and our soul loathe this light bread.' 6 And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died. 7 And the people came to Moses, and said: 'We have sinned, because we have spoken against the LORD, and against thee; pray unto the LORD, that He take away the serpents from us.' And Moses prayed for the people. 8 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole; and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.' 9 And Moses made a serpent of brass, and set it upon the pole; and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he looked unto the serpent of brass, he lived. 10 And the children of Israel journeyed, and pitched in Oboth.
Complaints occur not during rest spots but during travel. Has this every happened to parents taking kids from place to place exactly the same here.
11 And they journeyed from Oboth, and pitched at Ije-abarim, in the wilderness which is in front of Moab, toward the sun-rising … 16 And from thence to Beer; that is the well whereof the LORD said unto Moses: 'Gather the people together, and I will give them water.' 17 Then sang Israel this song: Spring up, O well--sing ye unto it-- 18 The well, which the princes dug, which the nobles of the people delved, with the sceptre, and with their staves. And from the wilderness to Mattanah;
Since the princes had dug the well and it was sufficient they were happy. A man receiving miracle water, miracle bread, etc. is less happy than a man who works for and earns it on his own accord.
19 and from Mattanah to Nahaliel; and from Nahaliel to Bamoth; 20 and from Bamoth to the valley that is in the field of Moab, by the top of Pisgah, which looketh down upon the desert. 21 And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, saying:
Am Yisrael does not desire war but wants a peaceful way to travel into the land.
22 'Let me pass through thy land; we will not turn aside into field, or into vineyard; we will not drink of the water of the wells; we will go by the king's highway, until we have passed thy border.'
So Am Yisrael wants just to travel by way of the border and not conquer anything. However, the offer will not be accepted and this will become a ‘Causes Belles” and a war will follow. Then part of the Golan and pre-Golan on the Jordanian side shall be conquered.
23 And Sihon would not suffer Israel to pass through his border; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and went out against Israel into the wilderness, and came to Jahaz; and he fought against Israel.
He must have been of the philosophy that a good defense is a good offense. He probably came with a force of thousands, many on horses from heights on people in the valley. The 600,000 foot soldiers after 39 years of training in the art of war were ready for horses and riders with archery, swords, spears etc. The accuracy of the arrows and spears were probably very high. Train with any weapon for 39 years and you will be very proficient.
24 And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from the Arnon unto the Jabbok, even unto the children of Ammon; for the border of the children of Ammon was strong. 25 And Israel took all these cities; and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all the towns thereof. 26 For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of his hand, even unto the Arnon.
They had fortified cities to flee after a defeat in battle. However, here too training and the help of HASHEM easily overcame the fortifications with fire on the gates using flaming arrows with good accuracy and arrows against the defenders of the walls. By the time the battering rams and lances.
27 Wherefore they that speak in parables say: Come ye to Heshbon! let the city of Sihon be built and established! 28 For a fire is gone out of Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon; it hath devoured Ar of Moab, the lords of the high places of Arnon. 29 Woe to thee, Moab! thou art undone, O people of Chemosh; he hath given his sons as fugitives, and his daughters into captivity, unto Sihon king of the Amorites.
It was a custom at the time to make fun of the god of the people that you conquered.
30 We have shot at them--Heshbon is perished--even unto Dibon, and we have laid waste even unto Nophah, which reached unto Medeba. 31 Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites. 32 And Moses sent to spy out Jazer, and they took the towns thereof, and drove out the Amorites that were there.
They completely wiped out the forces. Nothing is mentioned about any capture women and children but I assume that is what happened as the custom of the day.
33 And they turned and went up by the way of Bashan; and Og the king of Bashan went out against them, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei. 34 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Fear him not; for I have delivered him into thy hand, and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt do to him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon.' 35 So they smote him, and his sons, and all his people, until there was none left him remaining; and they possessed his land.
Og and his sons were giants of men and scary to fight, but a strong belief occupied the people and miracles happen to those who believe and even to Am Yisrael that doesn’t believe and makes them believers. These men fell by the sword and the cities went to the Bnei Yisrael. Eventually, Reuven, Gad and half of Menashe would take over the housing and refortify the cities and build corals for their sheep and cattle prior to the conquest of Eretz Yisrael.
22:1 And the children of Israel journeyed, and pitched in the plains of Moab beyond the Jordan at Jericho.
After all this the people are almost ready to conquer the land. Only because of the hitting of the rock in our Parsha, Moshe will not lead them into the land. Israel is about to deal with a hidden negative spiritual enemy in the near future something that physical intelligence would not tell them.
Sometimes I get comments on my writings that I feel should appear in at least the Israeli News here. This one is a sad story of our times this came from H . Have to comment regarding the picture and story about MK Zandberg. I can tell a lot from a photography about a person. A fine looking women who has children with a man who has not married her. What is going on there? I can now understand why she is against teaching children orthodoxy. ...they might learn how to live properly. So sad the secularization Israel. Remember always Hillel. I went to the Wikipedia about her and it turns out that she is an atheist.
Another letter I received was how we have to pray for world Jewry from D.L. I have to agree there are places in France, Germany, S. California that things are very bad. My neighbor has a sister who lives close by where Ephraim Gordon was murdered and it is on the same block that sometimes I meet Dr. Russel Hendel (Rashi made Simple) with my son and granddaughter close to Kosher Byte in Baltimore. Out of 35 Jewish members of Congress some don’t have it within them to oppose the antisemitism of Omar and the squad.
Father’s Day or Mother’s Day
It was decades ago, I sent my mother something with a heart on it that looked like a Valentine and wrote happy Mother’s Day. Later when my mother was getting more and more into Alzheimer I used to call daily and it made her day. Now my father’s day stopped on 23rd of Shevat 5729 and my mother’s day 29th of Mar Cheshvan 5767 every year I remember them. My son and some of my grandsons call me every Erev Shabbos that is Father’s Day and Grandfather’s day.

‘X Troop: The Secret Jewish Commandos of World War II’ by Leah Garrett (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt)
X Troop is the fiercest British World War II commando force you have likely never heard of.
Formally known as “No. 10 (Inter-Allied) Commando, 3 Troop,” its 87 members were mainly Jewish refugees from Germany and Austria who were hell-bent on exacting revenge on the Nazis who had destroyed their families and home communities. Some commandos were themselves survivors of incarceration in Nazi concentration camps.
Sworn to secrecy about their true identities for their own safety, these brave young men assumed English noms de guerre. Only one person, a secretary at MI5, who worked in the casualty division, had access to the list of the men’s original names and places of origin.
After a year and a half of intensive training in Wales and Scotland, the X Troopers were assigned to the spearhead of Allied forces that invaded Europe and fought into the heart of the Third Reich. Utilizing advanced combat and counterintelligence techniques, and their native German language abilities, they undertook dangerous missions to infiltrate behind enemy lines. In battle, they captured and immediately interrogated the enemy, providing invaluable information to the advancing Allied armies.
The X Troopers never fought as a joint force. They were seconded individually or in small groups to various Allied troops and divisions. Over half of them were killed, wounded or went missing in action.
“Nothing was going to stop them,” said Leah Garrett, author of a new book about this highly selective and motivated unit, whose exploits have largely been lost to history due to their clandestine nature.
Published May 25, “X Troop: The Secret Jewish Commandos of World War II” brings readers along on every step of these men’s journey from Central European teenagers to crack British commandos. The page-turning account is replete with heretofore unknown astounding feats thanks to the author’s success in declassifying long-sealed, top-secret British military records.
Garrett, director of the Jewish Studies Center and director of Hebrew and Jewish Studies at Hunter College in New York, already had another book under her belt about Jewish World War II fighters, the well-received “Young Lions: How Jewish Authors Reinvented the American War Novel.” Her experience researching and writing vividly about combat shines through in “X Troop.”
The book contains its share of famous names such as prime minister Winston Churchill, Lord Lovat, Miriam Rothschild, and German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel. More importantly, Garrett introduces the X Troopers, focusing primarily on three: Colin Anson (born Claus Ascher in Frankfurt), Peter Masters (born Peter Arany in Vienna), and Freddie Gray (born Manfred Gans in Borken, in northwest Germany near the border with the Netherlands).
“I was able to gather the most information on these three. They are also a good trio to put at the center of the story because they differ from one another in that they represent different personal backgrounds and varying war experiences,” Garrett said.
Anson was the only child of a Jewish father and a non-Jewish mother. Baptized and brought up as a Christian, he was unaware that he was half-Jewish until his father told him when he was a young teen. In fall 1937, after publicly speaking out against the Nazis, Anson’s father Curt was arrested and sent to the Dachau concentration camp. Less than two weeks later, a Gestapo officer showed up at the family’s door and told them that Curt had died of “circulation failure.” His ashes were posted to his widow and son — at their expense.
Following Kristallnacht in November 1938, Anson’s mother tried desperately to get him out of Germany. She finally succeeded in getting him on a Quaker-sponsored Kindertransport to the United Kingdom in February 1939. She remained behind and was reunited after the war with her soldier son, who survived grueling battles in Italy.
Masters made it out of Vienna to the UK with his divorced mother and sister after the Nazi Anschluss of Austria. They reunited with an aunt in London. Left behind was Masters’s maternal grandfather, who was the most influential Jewish figure in his life, taking him to synagogue and preparing him for his bar mitzvah. Masters’s father escaped to Switzerland before the war.
On D-Day, Masters staggered through the waist-high waves, holding a bike in one hand and a tommy gun above his head, as he landed at Sword Beach. Through her research, Garrett discovered that — contrary to the accepted historical record — Masters and the other cyclist commandos were actually the first across the crucial Pegasus Bridge.
“I was able to rewrite history with this! They were there, but no one knew it,” the author said excitedly.
Unlike most of the X Troopers, who came from assimilated backgrounds, Gans (aka Gray) was from an Orthodox Jewish family. (Garrett refers to him as Gans throughout the book, because contrary to most of the other men, he reverted to his original name and
Perhaps the most striking part of “X Troop” is the account of how Gans commandeered a jeep and driver at the end of the war and traveled two days straight from Holland through Germany to Czechoslovakia in search of his parents, who had escaped Germany to Holland (where they had citizenship) before the war. Miraculously, he found them alive in Terezin.
“Quickly the news gets out in the camp: The impossible has happened. A son has returned to seek his parents and has found them. Not all Jews in the world have been killed. The Nazis have not triumphed everywhere,” the author writes.
The impossible has happened. A son has returned to seek his parents and has found them
Even more extraordinary, Gans appealed to Princess Juliana of the Netherlands, who had returned from her government in exile in Canada. The princess granted the persuasive Gans a meeting, at which she promised to get the Dutch Jews released from the camp. She made good on her pledge and helped relocate them to Eindhoven. Gans’s parents ended up immigrating to Israel, where one of their sons had settled before the war.
Not only did Gans survive many dangerous battles, but his entire family — parents and three sons — remained intact by the end of the Holocaust.
“It’s important to note, however, that Gans, Anson and Masters are exceptions, in that most X Troopers lost many more family members,” Garrett said.
Like some other surviving members of X Troop, Gans stayed on in Europe for a while to help with denazification efforts before moving on with his life.
He and Masters both eventually moved to the US, where they lived openly as Jews and shared their wartime experiences with their wives and children. Unlike Gans, Masters continued to use the last name he was forced to adopt upon joining X Troop.
“All those who stayed in the UK kept the names they assumed as X Troopers. For them, it was their adult identity. Who they were before the war did not really exist anymore, and it was too painful for them to go back to their Germany or Austria in their heads,” Garrett explained.
Moreover, none of these men lived openly as Jews, and many converted and raised their families as Anglicans. Garrett chalks this up in part to the men’s assimilated backgrounds, and in part to perceptible under-the-surface antisemitic currents.
It must be noted that the memorial to X Troop’s fallen members erected in Aberdovey, Wales, where the men trained under their beloved commanding officer Bryan Hilton-Jones, makes no mention of their Jewish identities.
According to Garrett, efforts by Jewish veterans groups have been unsuccessful in persuading the local council to at least amend the information about the X Troopers in the pamphlet given to visitors.
“Perhaps the publication of this book will encourage the council to revisit its position,” she writes.
Garrett’s excellent new book corrects the record by fully recounting the X Troopers’ exploits and accurately reflecting who they were. The survivors all went on to live different kinds of lives, but they were united in one fundamental way.
“Whether or not they ever spoke about X Troop, they all felt profound gratitude to the Brits for taking them in and giving them the opportunity to fight the Nazis,” Garrett said.
