Parsha Pinchas, Kamloops, stories, news

Please add Rachel Sara Bat Chava to the refuah list.

Error correction. I wrote on Pasuk 4 last week the name Barak it should read: If he placed the tongue of a bird inside, it would talk – chirp out a msg. that Balak should be wary of Am Yisrael and not dare try to physically attack them.

Parsha Pinchas

Last week, we ended with Zimri, prince of the tribe of Shimon, yelling back at Moshe for marrying a Midian Woman and he brought his own Midian Woman into the camp. The difference of course being Yisro Priest to THE MOST HIGH and Cozbi being a prostitute to Baal Peor. That part Zimri forgot. For how does one sin? A craziness enters a man’s head. At first he realizes it is a sin perhaps thinks he can do Teshuva but does not have help from heaven because Teshuva must come from regret after the sin and not before. Example, born a 6th general Reform Jew, I was told that pork in ancient times had Trichinosis and with modern growing of pigs in western countries that does not exist. And that is more or less true. For without Emmes a Devar (thing) cannot stand. However, that is not the spiritual reason why Pork or Bacon are forbidden to Jews. It is that fact that the pig parts the hooves and does not chew its cud! Period! No more reason is needed. However, when your Reform Rabbi was an atheist so what does one have to do with a living G-D who was, is and will be?  So doing Teshuva was to come from recognizing the fact that ELOKIM exists and is manifested by HIS GLORY filling the whole Universe. Then there comes the regret of eating Pork and Bacon. Still where does the Kashrus of cows, sheep, etc. come in. Becoming a Baal Teshuva is not easy and it takes time.

Zimri instead of doing Teshuva and regretting his Znus (lewdness) and idol worship by Shogeg (accident) as he did not really know that defecation before the statue of Peor was its worship. Instead, he defied Moshe and the Halacha. His day in the sun was setting. Pinchas, by acting the way he did, saved Am Yisrael from a worse plague. Thrusting them through in the middle of the act and dragging their dying impaled bodies outside set the standard for stopping the plague in incense and repentance.

25:1 And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit harlotry with the daughters of Moab.

30:1 And Moses told the children of Israel according to all that the LORD commanded Moses.

Kamloops Canada and My Health.

This week the temperature in Kamloops Canada hit close to 49.6C or 121.3F and that is Las Vegas or Death Valley hot. Hotter than most of Israel ever gets. This week we were close to 35-36C or 96-98F in the shade in the Modiin area. When Israel is cooler than Kamloops it is time to think Aliyah.

I have undergone a series of medical tests and even got 2 liters of iron and one 400ml of blood. I have met with the surgeon to operate on the problem causing the internal bleeding. Since it is a major operation and at 74 a general anesthetic is necessary, I may be missing in action for a Shabbos or two. With Tisha B’Av coming it will either be before or more than likely after the 9 days. Rachamim ben Charlotte Jacqueline for prayers.

Rabbi Tzvi Sytner reflects on the Surfside Tragedy. Today 22 Tammuz 5781 the first headline of Yeted Neeman reflected on both the Meron and Surfside tragedies that hit the Jewish People. This is a wake-up call from HASHEM unto us according to the top Israeli Rabbis and we must reawaken our Yiddishkeit. https://www.aish.com/sp/pg/The-Florida-Disaster.html?s=ss2

Special Help for Special Needs by Rabbi Mendel Samuels

http://ascentofsafed.com/cgi-bin/ascent.cgi?Name=1229-41

Our youngest son Refoel-Meir is a special-needs child. He is a very sweet boy, but due to his condition he cannot be left alone even for a minute. Every day a nurse comes to our home to assist in his care; this allows my wife to function in her many capacities as a mother for the rest of the household and as a shlucha (emissary of the Lubavitcher Rebbe).

Several years ago there were changes at our insurance. They started sending letters informing us that in their assessment, our son's condition did not meet the criteria for deserving a home nurse for 40 hours a week. These assessments were baseless and Refoel Meir's doctors wrote letters stating unequivocally that he needed the nurses desperately.

After months of warnings, on the day before Rosh Hashana we were notified that the insurance would stop paying for the nurses indefinitely. We were devastated.

Instead of a trained nurse they were willing to provide us with an aide that would come for two hours each day to be with Refoel Meir. It was difficult to find the right person for the job, but after some time we managed to find the perfect fit. Although this provided some measure of relief so my wife could catch her breath and do some basic chores each day, the new arrangement was extremely difficult for us all, especially for my wife.

After losing the much-needed funding, a representative from the appeals department was assigned to our case. She assured me on the phone that she would do everything in her power to get the nurse back to our home.

Towards the end of our conversation she asked me, "How is the rebbetzin doing?"

Taken aback at the unexpected use of this Yiddish term referring to the rabbi's wife, I blurted out, "Are you Jewish?"

"I can't tell you that information over the phone," she replied laughing. From then on this became a routine joke in our phone conversations. She would ask how "the rebbetzin" is doing, I would ask her if she is Jewish and she'd respond she was unable to divulge that information.

On the day before Passover she called me with the bad news that after trying everything in her power to appeal their denial of Refoel Meir's nursing care, the final appeal had been rejected and the denial was final. We were broken by the news.

A few months later during the summer I was at the Ohel [burial structure of the Lubavitcher Rebbe] and as I prepared to enter, my wife called me in tears. The aide who had been coming for two hours each day for the past eight months found a better job and would not be returning henceforth. She was beside herself thinking how life would be without even this bare minimum of help.

I immediately assured her that everything will turn out for the best and asked her to write a letter to the Rebbe which I will read at the Ohel in a few minutes. Certainly the Rebbe will intercede that we overcome this challenge as well.

This is what she wrote:
Dear Rebbe,
Firstly, I thank the Aibershter ['the One above'] for the privilege of being given the responsibility of caring for such a special soul. But He created me of flesh and blood and there is only so much I can do. I desperately need the nurse. I'm begging for a blessing that we should get our nurse back for 40 hours a week. I'll take 20 hours but the truth is that we really need a nurse for 40 hours a week.

As I turned to leave after reading her letter and placing it at the Ohel, my phone rang.

"Hi Rabbi. How is the Rebbetzin?"

I was shocked since I had never expected to hear from the insurance appeals department ever again.

"I never expected to hear from you," I said.

"Neither did I, Rabbi. Tell me, what did you do?"

"That's a loaded question. I have done a lot of things."

"Rabbi, whom did you speak to?"

"To many people. What's going on?"

"That's what I am wondering as well. Listen, in all my years working at this company I have never seen this happen. I am holding a letter here stating that the company is reversing all their denials and your son will have a nurse for 40 hours a week!"

Standing near the Ohel with the phone to my ear I burst out crying and said to her, "Do you know where I am standing now? I'm standing near the resting place of the Lubavitcher Rebbe. Have you heard of the Lubavitcher Rebbe?"

"Yes, Rabbi. I was there last week."

"So you are Jewish!"

"I'm sorry I can't tell you that over the phone."

We were both very emotional and she started crying as well. An open miracle had just occurred in front of our eyes!

When I shared the news with my wife moments later she was in absolute disbelief, but so exhilaratingly grateful at the miraculous turn of events.

The story continues.

Although we had our funding back, finding the right nurse could be a serious challenge but I figured since we were already on a roll I would contact the nurse who had been coming up until Rosh Hashana and see if she was perhaps available to care for Refoel Meir again.

"Rabbi," she said to me on the phone. "You are a man of faith. I knew G-d would bring me back to your family. I have been waiting by the phone all these months. I will be there on Monday."

May Refoel Meir experience a refuah shleimah u'krovah.

At the Front Lines in Surfside by Dr. Yvette Alt Miller

https://www.aish.com/jw/s/At-the-Frontlines-in-Surfside.html?s=shl

On Thursday, June 24, 2021, tragedy struck Champlain Towers, a 12-story residential building in the Miami suburb of Surfside. Half of the complex suddenly collapsed in the early hours of the morning, burying entire families in the rubble. Days after the disaster, the remains of several people killed in the crush have been recovered and 150 people remain unaccounted for.

Champlain Towers is home to a diverse community that includes many Jews. In the days that followed this catastrophe, Jews and others around the world have come together to help search for victims and to comfort the families desperately waiting for word of their loved ones.

Leon Roy Hausmann, a volunteer with the Mexican Jewish rescue organization Cadena, is on the scene in Surfside and spoke with Aish.com about the sense of solidarity he feels with the community and the many victims of the calamity.

Cadena volunteers help people “regardless of nationality, regardless of religion; we don’t discriminate,” he explains. After working around the world to help search for and rescue victims of over 1,000 natural disasters, helping search for residents of Champlain Towers feels close to home. “It just feels more immediate when it’s our people who are victimized by this event.”

When Cadena volunteers heard about the Chaplain Towers collapse, they sprang into action, dispatching seven Jewish search and rescue experts to Miami, and mobilizing local Cadena volunteers in the Miami area. “This is the highest technology in the market,” Hausmann notes of his team’s equipment, which includes sonar devices that can detect sounds underneath dozens of feet of rubble, search dogs trained to detect human scent, and x-ray machinery.

“We’re working with the Fire Department of Miami-Dade County," Hausmann notes, describing their work as round the clock and nonstop. Cadena volunteers have also dispatched psychologists and therapists who are working with family members who are still awaiting news.

Thousands of local residents have been volunteering to bring food and clothes and other items to the family members who are waiting and also to those families who made it out of Chaplain Towers alive and are currently homeless. “Thousands of volunteers have been bringing food and clothes and anything the families need. It has been very touching to see.”

One of Hausmann’s most moving moments during the past few days came on Shabbat, the day after the collapse. About 17 Cadena volunteers were at the site late on Friday night, providing support to the local fire department rescuers. “We made Kiddush for the whole team,” Hausmann recalls, “and also for all the Jewish people who are still trapped underneath the rubble.”

On Sunday, June 27, a group of ten Israeli Home Front Command soldiers arrived in Surfside. They went straight to the site of the building collapse and got to work alongside Cadena volunteers and local Miami-area first responders, searching in the rubble for survivors and also for the remains of victims of the collapse, bringing their unique search and rescue experience and expertise.

“The need right now is endless. You think of all these different families that have been erased in the blink of an eye,” explained Rabbi Dr. Fred Klein, one of the key responders in the area.

Rabbi Klein is the Executive Vice President of the Rabbinical Association of Greater Miami, Director of Mishkan Miami, and is board certified in clinical pastoral care. When Champlain Towers collapsed, the Jewish Federation of Greater Miami sent Rabbi Klein to help. He spoke with Aish.com during a busy day, filled with meetings and work coordinating the many elements of response to the disaster.

Right now, there are two main areas where Rabbi Klein and other volunteers are focusing their efforts. “One is actually the area where they’re doing search and rescue,” he explains. Throughout Sunday, June 27 – the Jewish fast day of the 17th of Tammuz, when Jews were fasting despite the extreme heat in Surfside – Rabbi Klein worked to take groups of family members to visit the site. “It’s extremely traumatic for them.”

A second area where Rabbi Klein is working is a local hotel where hundreds of family members of people who are still missing are gathered. “They came from around the country. They’re waiting for news and I think it’s a very difficult place to be psychologically.” He notes that many family members are praying “for a miracle” that their loved ones are found alive. “It’s hard to know what to do, or how to feel, or how to plan,” without knowing whether their loved ones are still alive. The hotel is offering kosher meals, all prepared by local volunteers. “So much good will has been flowing in from the Jewish community since the tragedy," Rabbi Klein explains, helping both Jewish and non-Jewish victims alike.

He notes that donations have poured in from throughout the area and that some local synagogues have transformed themselves into distribution centers for donated goods. “It’s not just the families who are waiting for news of a loved one,” he notes: “There are also families who lived in Champlain Towers who escaped. They are in need too. They’re homeless right now and are going to have to rebuild their lives.”

“I’m an Orthodox rabbi,” he notes, “but you see rabbis from all different walks of life – men and women – they’re on the ground right now. They’re trying to help diverse groups of Jews.”

Many of the volunteers supporting the first responders in Surfside and aiding families of missing people are members of Hatzalah of South Florida, a Jewish group that improves health and medical outcomes by “augmenting existing emergency medical services in South Florida with community-based state-certified EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) volunteer responders.”

Joseph Dahan is one of the Hatzalah volunteers working in Surfside. “We’re broken down into several different teams,” he explained to Aish.com – with each team focusing on a different area of need.

At the site of the building collapse itself, “we’re providing the triage and medical support for the search and rescue teams,” he notes. When rescuers become injured or dehydrated on the job, Hatzalah volunteers help tend to the first responders.

Hatzalah also operates units of volunteers at the hotel where hundreds of family members are waiting for news. They employ psychotherapists and also work with other organizations to help counsel people. Hatzalah provides support medically and emotionally during these trying times.

Rabbi Gidon Moskovitz currently lives in Houston, but he and his family are soon planning to move to Bal Harbor – a neighboring suburb near Surfside – when he becomes the rabbi of Young Israel of Bal Harbor later this summer. As soon as Rabbi Moskovitz heard about Champlain Towers disaster, he knew he had to be with his Florida congregants, and flew to the area to help.

What he found was a huge outpouring of chesed (acts of kindness and help). Local Jews were collecting food, toiletries and other items to donate to families who lost their homes and possessions in the collapse. Soon, the garage of Young Israel of Bal Harbor was filled with donated items to distribute. Many of his congregants have friends and relatives who are still missing, and they are doing all they can to help.

“As soon as we heard about things Thursday morning at the crack of dawn, we checked on our (congregational) families,” recalls Mike Baranek, the Director of Congregational Engagement of Temple Beth Shalom in Miami Beach, in an Aish.com interview. He soon found that two of his synagogue’s members lived in Champlain Towers. “Thank God, both families were alive,” he notes. “One family walked out (of the building) in their pajamas” – unable to return to the destroyed building, they cannot access any of their family possessions.

Baranek notes that local Jewish families immediately opened their homes, giving displaced residents places to stay. “It’s been an amazing response from the city and from the Jewish community.” His congregants have been working to gather donations and to help in any way they can. “We got to the point where announcements were made that no more physical supplies are needed.”

The day after the collapse, Temple Beth Shalom delivered Shabbat dinner to their congregants who’d lost their homes. In addition to food, the synagogue also delivered kippahs, tallitot (Jewish prayer shawls), siddurs (Jewish prayer books), wine and candles for Shabbat. “We knew they had nothing,” Baranek explains.

With the search and rescue operation still underway, there are many ways that we around the world can also step up to help. “At this moment the most important thing is to pray for the lives of the people who perished and who may still be alive,” notes Cadena volunteer Leon Roy Hausmann. Rabbi Moskovitz has been emphasizing the “power of what prayer can do.” He wants people to understand that prayer is just as important as other types of actions.

During times of tragedy, it’s a Jewish custom to recite Psalms. Consider spending some time reciting one or more Psalms each day. Here is a link to English translations of these powerful, timeless Jewish prayers. https://tehillim-online.com/tehillim-translated-into-english

We can also donate funds to help sustain the volunteers working in Surfside and the families who are in dire need.

Ed-Op Diane Weber Bederman: Influencing your Children.

Influence: the power or capacity of causing an effect in indirect or intangible ways: sway: the act or power of producing an effect without apparent exertion of force or direct exercise of command:  corrupt interference with authority for personal gain

According to a 2019 survey from Common Sense Media and Survey Monkey: “Teens get their news more frequently from social media sites (e.g., Facebook and Twitter) or from YouTube than directly from news organizations. More than half of teens (54%) get news from social media, and 50% get news from YouTube at least a few times a week. Fewer than half, 41%, get news reported by news organizations in print or online at least a few times a week, and only 37% get news on TV at least a few times a week.” Among teens who got their news from YouTube, two-thirds reported learning about the news from celebrities and influencers, rather than news organizations.

So what is an Influencer? The figure of an influencer is supposed to change how we behave, to be a spokesperson who should show a deep sense of appreciation (for something), rather than appropriation. It’s an influencer’s responsibility to create experiences, ideas and ways of thinking that entice crowds to follow them.  Many of these influencers have from hundreds of thousands to millions of followers.

These Influencers are speaking to your children in their bedrooms, without you there to mediate, teaching them morals and values that may not be yours but fit in with today’s cancel culture. They are like pedophiles and bullies who come after your children on line.

I remember people of influence. They did not have the title Influencer. They didn’t need the title. They just influenced by example. They certainly were not given the responsibility to create ways of thinking! What a sense of self-importance!

Well, you can find them on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Twitter and they can find your children.

Example recently Facebook has these ‘fact checkers’ that say ‘partially true’ what part is not 100% true it is an old picture of Kamala Harris and not taken with the post.
