Parsha
Lech Lecha
Last week one of the Rabbis I read
wrote about connecting the dots and the Parsha in his Drasha. As we go to this
Parsha we have Adam – Metushaleh – Noah – Avram or also Avraham or Shem
transmitting the creation story to Yacov. Like the link between Beresheis and
Noach being the name of Noach so we have last week concluding with Avram and
this week starting with Avram. Our Parsha concludes with the first Bris and next
week’s continues with the healing for the Bris. A strong bond in tradition and
Torah Time. This week there is the rule of no before and no after in the Torah
as we shall see below.
12:1 Now the LORD said unto Abram: 'Get thee out of thy
country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto the land that
I will show thee. 2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I
will bless thee, and make thy name great; and be thou a blessing.
It is hard for a person traveling to have children. Perhaps
via sales from place to place to do business but if so that becomes difficult
to become famous enough to make a great name for himself. Since blessings come
from honoring Shabbos and from HASHEM that appears to be the most practical
outcome under ordinary circumstances.
3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and him
that curses thee will I curse; and in thee shall all the families of the earth
be blessed.'
I do not understand completely human nature why people
curse the righteous but perhaps there is a reason called jealousy and their
impossibility to do so.
4 So Abram went, as the LORD had spoken unto him;
and Lot went with him; and Abram was seventy and five years old when he
departed out of Haran.
This is 425 years before Yetzias Mitzrayim. In the
accounts of Yetzias Mitzrayim we come across the number 430 years which is
traced back to another narrative in our Parsha aka the story of the Bris
between the Pieces with the 4 kings vs. the 5 kinds. So how do we explain this?
The answer is that there is no early or late in the Torah but rather a
narrative of an earlier story given in non-Chronological order. It is like
hearing from your father of his skiing trips as a young man and then he tells
you the story of his days at grade school so do not be surprised but such
things.
5 And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his
brother's son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls
that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of
Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came.
Sometimes, I work hard and go to about 25 Facebook
Groups to advertise my BlogSpot and perhaps I pick up one, forty or sixty
people for a few weeks. But when I think of the work and persuasion of Avram
and Sarai the burden becomes easy.
6 And Abram passed through the land unto the place
of Shechem, unto the terebinth of Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the
land. 7 And the LORD appeared unto Abram, and said: 'Unto thy seed
will I give this land'; and he built there an altar unto the LORD, who appeared
unto him.
The name that exists today already existed in Avram’s
day. This could be at the high place we know as Alon Moreh today where one can
see the sea, dead sea and Hermon or near the area where Joshua built his Mizbayach.
Both are close to Shechem.
8 And he removed from thence unto the mountain on
the east of Beth-el, and pitched his tent, having Beth-el on the west, and Ai
on the east; and he built there an altar unto the LORD, and called upon the
name of the LORD.
Beis-el would only exist in the future. Ai existed
until the time of Yoshua and was conquered. The Mizbayach that Avram built
appears to be somewhere on a road towards Yerushalayim, Chevron and Beer Sheva
based on his journey.
9 And Abram journeyed, going on still toward the
South. 10 And there was a famine in the land; and Abram went down
into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was sore in the land.
Eretz Yisrael depends upon either springs, wells or
rain. Mitzrayim on the other hand had the flow of the Nile and irrigation
system in effect. From a later narrative it appears only in the life of Avram’s
aka Avraham’s great-grandson Yosef that the grain was gathered in silos.
However, they too might have existed at this time.
11 And it came to pass, when he was come near to
enter into Egypt, that he said unto Sarai his wife: 'Behold now, I know that
thou art a fair woman to look upon. 12 And it will come to pass, when
the Egyptians shall see thee, that they will say: This is his wife; and they
will kill me, but thee they will keep alive.
The Midrash says up until the time of Avraham aging did
not exist and she appeared in her 60’s, 70’s and 80’s like a 20 year old so he
tried to hide her.
13 Say, I pray thee, thou art my sister; that it
may be well with me for thy sake, and that my soul may live because of
thee.'
The laws of Noach against sexual immorality, murder,
idol worship etc. were given in the year 1657 from creation. Avram was born in
1948 and less than 99 years of age. So the year must have been a minimum of
2023 to 2047. This is less than 400 years after the commands and already
mankind had forgotten its history and the laws and lessons of the past. (I may
add that today with the WOKE Culture, history of the USA is being perverted for
political purposes so as we say in Shir HaShirim of Shlomo there is nothing new
under the sun.)
14 And it came to pass, that, when Abram was come
into Egypt, the Egyptians beheld the woman that she was very
fair. 15 And the princes of Pharaoh saw her, and praised her to
Pharaoh; and the woman was taken into Pharaoh's house.
Although she was between 65 plus she had the build of a
20year old woman she had never given birth. Even though she was dressed
modestly she was fair and the Egyptians were dark and perhaps had been in a
bout with smallpox all over their faces so she was an extraordinary beauty.
16 And he dealt well with Abram for her sake; and
he had sheep, and oxen, and he-asses, and men-servants, and maid-servants, and
she-asses, and camels. 17 And the LORD plagued Pharaoh and his house
with great plagues because of Sarai Abram's wife. 18 And Pharaoh
called Abram, and said: 'What is this that thou hast done unto me? why didst
thou not tell me that she was thy wife? 19 Why said thou: She is my
sister? so that I took her to be my wife; now therefore behold thy wife, take
her, and go thy way.'
Pharaoh had a similar occurrence like Avimelech in next
week’s Parsha but not as righteous. Avram does not account “there is no fear of
G-D here”. But is unceremoniously thrown out of the country lest more trouble
occur because of Sarah.
20 And Pharaoh gave men charge concerning him; and
they brought him on the way, and his wife, and all that he had.
So he left with plenty of goods, Lot and family.
13:1 And Abram went up out of Egypt, he,
and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the
South. 2 And Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in
gold. 3 And he went on his journeys from the South even to Beth-el,
unto the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Beth-el and
Ai; 4 unto the place of the altar, which he had made there at the
first; and Abram called there on the name of the LORD. 5 And Lot
also, who went with Abram, had flocks, and herds, and tents. 6 And
the land was not able to bear them, that they might dwell together; for their
substance was great, so that they could not dwell together.
Avram gave
generously to Lot as he raised him after Haran’s death.
7 And
there was a strife between the herdsmen of Abram's cattle and the herdsmen of
Lot's cattle. And the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelt then in the
land. 8 And Abram said unto Lot: 'Let there be no strife, I pray
thee, between me and thee, and between my herdsmen and thy herdsmen; for we are
brethren.
You are like
a son unto me so let us separate so as to prevent strife.
9 Is
not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me; if thou
wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou take the right
hand, then I will go to the left.' 10 And Lot lifted up his eyes, and
beheld all the plain of the Jordan, that it was well watered every where,
before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, like the garden of the LORD, like
the land of Egypt, as thou goes unto Zoar. (called Zohar today)
Avram was
promised this land but was willing to move to the left if need be for peace.
But Lot saw the physical Gashmiyous and lush green area that for him was like
Gan Eden.
11 So
Lot chose him all the plain of the Jordan; and Lot journeyed east; and they
separated themselves the one from the other. 12 Abram dwelt in the
land of Canaan, and Lot dwelt in the cities of the Plain, and moved his tent as
far as Sodom. 13 Now the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners against
the LORD exceedingly.
Why would
these wicked people want Lot. If we view that before they were so corrupted and
bored from wealth, they had been in the battle of the kings and uncle Avram
rescued Lot and their kings that he was accepted there and to be a judge.
14 And
the LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him: 'Lift up now
thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art, northward and southward and
eastward and westward; 15 for all the land which thou see, to thee
will I give it, and to thy seed for ever. 16 And I will make thy seed
as the dust of the earth; so that if a man can number the dust of the earth,
then shall thy seed also be numbered. 17 Arise, walk through the land
in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for unto thee will I give
it.' 18 And Abram moved his tent, and came and dwelt by the
terebinths of Mamre, which are in Hebron, and built there an altar unto the
LORD.
This is
still in Chronological Order from the time that Avram left Haran and now he is
to inherit the land without Lot.
14:1 And it came to pass in the days of
Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and
Tidal king of Goiim,
This story
and the 25 to 26 years period is unspecified when this ‘came to
pass’ occurred.
2 that
they made war with Bera king of Sodom, and with Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab
king of Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela--the same is
Zoar. 3 All these came as allies unto the vale of Siddim--the same is
the Salt Sea. 4 Twelve years they served Chedorlaomer, and in the
thirteenth year they rebelled. 5 And in the fourteenth year came
Chedorlaomer and the kings that were with him, and smote the Rephaim in
Ashteroth-karnaim, and the Zuzim in Ham, and the Emim in
Shaveh-kiriathaim,
Was Lot a
traveling salesman or Avraham and Lot having a business between Haran and these
cities by the sea?
6 and
the Horites in their mount Seir, unto El-paran, which is by the
wilderness.
The plain of Paran: Heb.
אֵיל. According to its Aramaic translation, it
means a plain. I say, however, that אֵיל
does not mean a plain, but rather, that the plain of Paran was named Eil, and
that [the plain] of Mamre was named Elonei, and that [the plain] of the Jordan
was named Kikkar, and that [the plain] of Shittim was named Abel, אָבֵל הַשִּׁטִּים (Num. 33:49). And similarly, Baal-gad
[was a plain] named Baal. [Though] they are all translated מִישׁוֹר, a plain, each one has its name accompanying it.
7 And
they turned back, and came to En-mishpat--the same is Kadesh--and smote all the
country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites, that dwelt in
Hazazon-tamar. 8 And there went out the king of Sodom, and the king
of Gomorrah, and the king of Admah, and the king of Zeboiim, and the king of
Bela--the same is Zoar; and they set the battle in array against them in the
vale of Siddim; 9 against Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king
of Goiim, and Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar; four kings
against the five. 10 Now the vale of Siddim was full of slime pits;
and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and they fell there, and they that
remained fled to the mountain.
These sink
holes are until this day when a gas/petrol station was swallowed up near the
Dead Sea in the Ein Gedi area a few years ago. I used to park and bathe in that
area. The kings were swallowed by one of these great sink holes. When they were
pulled out alive, they finally believed the story of Avram being thrown into a
furnace and rescued.
Many clay pits: There were many pits there
from which they took earth for the clay for building (Targum Onkelos). The
Midrashic explanation (Gen. Rabbah ad loc.) is that the clay was kneaded in
them [i.e., in the pits], and a miracle was wrought for the king of Sodom that
he escaped from there, because some of the nations did not believe that Abraham
had been saved from Ur of the Chaldees, from the fiery furnace, but since this
one escaped from the clay, they believed in Abraham retroactively.
11 And
they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their victuals, and went
their way. 12 And they took Lot, Abram's brother's son, who dwelt in
Sodom, and his goods, and departed. 13 And there came one that had
escaped, and told Abram the Hebrew--now he dwelt by the terebinths of Mamre the
Amorite, brother of Eshcol, and brother of Aner; and these were confederate
with Abram.
The Midrash
says it was Og Melech Bashan who wanted Avram killed so that he could take
Sarah for himself. But the Pshat is that a certain person escaped and ran to
Avram for help. This date would have been 5 years before Avram left Haran and
that was an area not controlled by the kings.
And the fugitive came: According
to its simple meaning, this was Og, who escaped from the battle, and that is
what is referred to (in Deut. 3:11): “Only Og survived from
the rest of the Rephaim.” And that is the meaning of “survived,” that Amraphel
and his allies did not kill him when they smote the Rephaim in
Ashteroth-Karnaim [Midrash Tanchuma (Chukkath 25)]. The Midrash Gen. Rabbah
[explains]: This is Og, who escaped from the Generation of the Flood, and this
is the meaning of “from the rest of the Rephaim,” as it is said: (above 6:4):
“The Nephilim were on the earth, etc.” And he [Og] intended that Abram should
be killed and he would marry Sarah (Gen. Rabbah 42:8).
14 And
when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he led forth his trained
men, born in his house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued as far as
Dan.
His trained men: Heb. חֲנִיכָיו. It is written חֲנִיכוֹ
[in the singular], his trained man (other editions: It is read). This is
Eliezer, whom he had trained to [perform the] commandments, and it [חֲנִיכָיו] is an expression of the initiation (lit.
the beginning of the entrance) of a person or a utensil to the craft with which
he [or it] is destined to remain, and similarly (Prov. 22: 6): “Train (חֲנֹךְ) a child”; (Num. 7:10): “the dedication of (חֲנֻכַּת) the altar”; (Ps. 30:1): “the dedication of (חֲנֻכַּת) the Temple,” and in Old French it is
called enseigner [to instruct, train]. Three
hundred and eighteen: Our Sages said (Gen.
Rabbah 43:2, Ned. 32a): It was Eliezer alone, and it [the number 318] is the
numerical value of his name. Until
Dan: There he became weak, for
he saw that his children were destined to erect a calf there (Sanh. 96a). The
reference is to I Kings 12:29: “And
he (Jeroboam) placed one in Beth-el, and the other he placed in Dan.”
Until Dan or
Banias at the foot of Hermon when it appears to me that the fleeing forces
could not manage going up to the Golan Heights with chained or tied-up
prisoners and left them and the goods for the mountain is steep to climb to the
Hermon or flee into what is modern Lebanon that is also up hill. Or they did
manage and he took a slight rest and pursued.
15 And
he divided himself against them by night, he and his servants, and smote them,
and pursued them unto Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus.
And he divided himself against them: According
to its simple meaning, transpose the verse: “And he divided himself, he and his
servants, upon them at night,” as is customary for pursuers, who divide
themselves after the pursued when they flee, one here and one there. At
night: i.e., after nightfall he
did not refrain from pursuing them. The Midrash Aggadah (Gen. Rabbah 43:3)
states, however, that the night was divided, and in its first half, a miracle
was wrought for him, and its second half was preserved for the [miracle of]
midnight in Egypt.
This may be a place between the modern border and Damascus on the
northwestern side of the city.
16 And
he brought back all the goods, and also brought back his brother Lot, and his
goods, and the women also, and the people. 17 And the king of Sodom
went out to meet him, after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer and
the kings that were with him, at the vale of Shaveh--the same is the King's
Vale. 18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine;
and he was priest of God the Most High.
Once these
kings were slain, peace could reign and the area of the plains were no longer
threatened. The King here was Shem who was a Priest King in what would become
Yerushalayim but was called Shalem at the time.
19 And
he blessed him, and said: 'Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Maker of heaven
and earth; 20 and blessed be God the Most High, who hath delivered
thine enemies into thy hand.' And he gave him a tenth of all.
Melchizedek
is associated with King and Priest Shem ben Noach. He blesses the G-D of Avram
as a Kiddush HASHEM.
21 And
the king of Sodom said unto Abram: 'Give me the persons, and take the goods to
thyself.' 22 And Abram said to the king of Sodom: 'I have lifted up
my hand unto the LORD, God Most High, Maker of heaven and
earth, 23 that I will not take a thread nor a shoe-latchet nor aught
that is thine, lest thou should say: I have made Abram rich;
The
commentator based on the Bris that follows date this as 430 years before
leaving Mitzrayim. This occurs when Avram is 70 years old and not yet very wealthy.
Yet Avram attributes his victory to G-D Almighty. He will not take money for
something G-D did for him on the account of others.
24 save
only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went
with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre, let them take their portion.
These men
helped and should be paid for their time and energy and rewarded for their
bravery. *
15:1 After these things the word of the
LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying: 'Fear not, Abram, I am thy shield,
thy reward shall be exceeding great.'
Now G-D is
confirming that Avram believed.
2 And
Abram said: 'O Lord GOD, what wilt Thou give me, seeing I go hence childless,
and he that shall be possessor of my house is Eliezer of
Damascus?' 3 And Abram said: 'Behold, to me Thou hast given no seed,
and, lo, one born in my house is to be mine heir.' 4 And, behold, the
word of the LORD came unto him, saying: 'This man shall not be thine heir; but
he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine
heir.' 5 And He brought him forth abroad, and said: 'Look now toward
heaven, and count the stars, if thou be able to count them'; and He said unto
him: 'So shall thy seed be.' 6 And he believed in the LORD; and He
counted it to him for righteousness.
You will
become the father of Nations. Yishmael will give you many million Muslim and
Esav will yield millions of Christians. But in the end your inheritors will be
a few million of the Bnei Yisrael.
7 And
He said unto him: 'I am the LORD that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees,
to give thee this land to inherit it.' 8 And he said: 'O Lord GOD,
whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it?' 9 And He said unto
him: 'Take Me a heifer of three years old, and a she-goat of three years old,
and a ram of three years old, and a turtle-dove, and a young
pigeon.' 10 And he took him all these, and divided them in the midst,
and laid each half over against the other; but the birds divided he
not. 11 And the birds of prey came down upon the carcasses, and Abram
drove them away. 12 And it came to pass, that, when the sun was going
down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, a dread, even a great darkness,
fell upon him. 13 And He said unto Abram: 'Know of a surety that thy
seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them;
and they shall afflict them four hundred years; 14 and also that
nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge; and afterward shall they come out
with great substance. 15 But thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou
shalt be buried in a good old age. 16 And in the fourth generation
they shall come back hither; for the iniquity of the Amorite is not yet
full.'
A 70year old
man, after a major military campaign (called by commentators a preliminary Gog
and Magog), slaughtering animals and chasing off birds of prey was exhausting
that Avram fell into a very deep sleep.
17 And
it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and there was thick darkness,
behold a smoking furnace, and a flaming torch that passed between these
pieces. 18 In that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying:
'Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great
river, the river Euphrates; 19 the Kenite, and the Kenizzite, and the
Kadmonite, 20 and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the
Rephaim, 21 and the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Girgashite,
and the Jebusite.
16:1 Now Sarai Abram's wife bore him no
children; and she had a handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was
Hagar. 2 And Sarai said unto Abram: 'Behold now, the LORD has
restrained me from bearing; go in, I pray thee, unto my handmaid; it may be
that I shall be built up through her.' And Abram hearkened to the voice of
Sarai. 3 And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar the Egyptian, her handmaid,
after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to Abram
her husband to be his wife. 4 And he went in unto Hagar, and she
conceived; and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised
in her eyes. 5 And Sarai said unto Abram: 'My wrong be upon thee: I
gave my handmaid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was
despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee.' 6 But
Abram said unto Sarai: 'Behold, thy maid is in thy hand; do to her that which
is good in thine eyes.' And Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her
face.
Avram was in
love with Sarai and Hagar to him was a surrogate and not equal to Sarai at all!
7 And
the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by
the fountain in the way to Shur. 8 And he said: 'Hagar, Sarai's
handmaid, whence do you come? and whither go thou?' And she said: 'I flee from
the face of my mistress Sarai.' 9 And the angel of the LORD said unto
her: 'Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her
hands.' 10 And the angel of the LORD said unto her: 'I will greatly
multiply thy seed, that it shall not be numbered for multitude.
Though your
son, you will be a mother of tens of thousands times tens of thousands of
children.
11 And
the angel of the LORD said unto her: 'Behold, thou art with child, and shalt
bear a son; and thou shalt call his name Ishmael, because the LORD hath heard
thy affliction.
For HE, G-D,
has heard you.
12 And he
shall be a wild ass of a man: his hand shall be against every man, and every
man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in the face of all his
brethren.'
First a
jackass then a man.
13 And
she called the name of the LORD that spoke unto her, Thou art a God of seeing;
for she said: 'Have I even here seen Him that see Me?' 14 Wherefore
the well was called 'Beer-lahai-roi; behold, it is between Kadesh and
Bered. 15 And Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram called the name of
his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. 16 And Abram was fourscore and six
years old, when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
17:1 And when Abram was ninety years old
and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him: 'I am God Almighty;
walk before Me, and be thou wholehearted. 2 And I will make My
covenant between Me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.'
When we look
at the life of Avram and others who had prophecy, we think of them like Moshe
Rabbaynu in contact almost daily with a link to heaven. We see here 29 years go
by between the Bris between the pieces and this contact. We do not know if G-D
communicated with Avram or not in these years other than the Command Lech Lecha
at the age of 75.
3 And
Abram fell on his face; and God talked with him, saying: 4 'As for
Me, behold, My covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be the father of a
multitude of nations. 5 Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram,
but thy name shall be Abraham; for the father of a multitude of nations have I
made thee.
We see and
learn a new factor here. True story: My wife had a friend who was divorced
named Frieda and she had no children and could not find a husband. She went to
a Rav and he said that her name should be Shlomit instead of Frieda. A short
time afterwards, she met her husband and about a year or so later became a
mother.
6 And I
will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings
shall come out of thee. 7 And I will establish My covenant between Me
and thee and thy seed after thee throughout their generations for an
everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee and to thy seed after
thee. 8 And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the
land of thy sojourning’s, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting
possession; and I will be their God.'
Those who
will be born are going to inherit you physically in this land and spiritually.
9 And
God said unto Abraham: 'And as for thee, thou shalt keep My covenant, thou, and
thy seed after thee throughout their generations. 10 This is My
covenant, which ye shall keep, between Me and you and thy seed after thee:
every male among you shall be circumcised. 11 And ye shall be
circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of a
covenant betwixt Me and you. 12 And he that is eight days old shall
be circumcised among you, every male throughout your generations, he that is
born in the house, or bought with money of any foreigner, that is not of thy
seed. 13 He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy
money, must needs be circumcised; and My covenant shall be in your flesh for an
everlasting covenant. 14 And the uncircumcised male who is not
circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that soul shall be cut off from his
people; he hath broken My covenant.'
A Great Ruv was
once asked, “Why has Yishmael merited to rule Har HaBeis?” So the Gadol
replied, “Because Yishmael voluntary was circumcised at 13, he was given over
to keep Har HaBeis for 1300plus years until the Redemption.
15 And
God said unto Abraham: 'As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name
Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be. 16 And I will bless her, and
moreover I will give thee a son of her; yea, I will bless her, and she shall be
a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall be of her.'
She will
sire your son.
17 Then
Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart: 'Shall a child
be born unto him that is a hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety
years old, bear?'
He laughed
from joy and extreme Simcha.
18 And
Abraham said unto God: 'Oh that Ishmael might live before Thee!'
He was
afraid that only one child would get the blessing and he loved Yishmael and did
not want to lose him.
19 And
God said: 'Nay, but Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son; and thou shalt call
his name Isaac; and I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting
covenant for his seed after him. 20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard
thee; behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply
him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great
nation.
You have a
win-win. Yishmael will be an exceedingly large nation and Yitzchak will inherit
you spiritually and also rule this land.
21 But
My covenant will I establish with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear unto thee at
this set time in the next year.' 22 And He left off talking with him,
and God went up from Abraham. 23 And Abraham took Ishmael his son,
and all that were born in his house, and all that were bought with his money,
every male among the men of Abraham's house, and circumcised the flesh of their
foreskin in the selfsame day, as God had said unto him. 24 And
Abraham was ninety years old and nine, when he was circumcised in the flesh of
his foreskin. 25 And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old, when he
was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. 26 In the selfsame day
was Abraham circumcised, and Ishmael his son. 27 And all the men of
his house, those born in the house, and those bought with money of a foreigner,
were circumcised with him.

In recent history there are many famous and influential
disabled people. People like the late Christopher Reeves and Stephen Hawking
have been inspirational figures symbolizing courage, heroism and
resilience.
Yet less than a century ago, things were radically
different. Disabled people were shunned and excluded,
shut away in institutions and assumed to have little value to contribute to the
world. Dr. Ludwig Guttmann, a Jewish German neurosurgeon, deeply believed in
the Jewish value of the infinite worth of every human being, regardless of
their physical limitations. And with this far-reaching and indefatigable
commitment to his vision, he altered the future of all disabled people.
Guttmann was born on the cusp of the 19th century
in a small town in Germany to an orthodox Jewish family. His passion to help
spinal injury patients was ignited when he volunteered at a local hospital for
mining injuries as a teenager.
One experience made a profound impact on his life. Guttmann
met a strapping young miner who had broken his back in a mining accident and
was paralyzed from the waist down, but was otherwise healthy and vibrant.
The then-accepted method of treatment for patients with
spinal cord injuries was to encase them in plaster, isolate them and wait for
them to die. When asking the doctors about this young miner he was told, “Don't
bother, he'll be dead in a few weeks."
In just five weeks this young miner died. This young man’s
tragic, unnecessary demise was forever imprinted on Guttmann who said,
“Although I saw many more victims suffering the same fate, it was the picture
of that young man which remained indelibly fixed in my memory.”
After completing medical school and specializing as a
neurosurgeon, Guttmann soon became known as a leading specialist in Germany.
His growing reputation led to many offers to work abroad but he turned them all
down. Then Kristallnacht in 1938 occurred. After watching the Nazis torch
synagogues, vandalize Jewish property and kill dozens of Jews, he fled Germany
and arrived in Britain in March 1939 with his wife, two children and no money.
Guttmann settled in Oxford and continued his spinal injury
research at the Nuffield Department of Neurosurgery in the Radcliffe Infirmary.
At the time most people who sustained spinal injuries would
die within three months. The few who did survive carried on living as useless
cripples, unemployable and unwanted, condemned to living and dying institutions
for incurable patients.
Guttmann saw a meaningful future for these patients beyond
their injuries. He believed that injured people were still valuable and
worthwhile and had a vibrant, albeit different, future post-injury. Guttmann
was convinced that with proper treatment, paraplegics could live full and
rewarding lives. His refugee status did not deter him; he advocated the
rehabilitation and care of spinal cord patients whenever he could.
When the British government decided to open a spinal unit
clinic due to the war injuries, Guttmann was the obvious choice to head it.
As a pioneering individualist, Guttmann agreed on condition
that he could treat patients in his own way, with no interference. The Centre
opened at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, in Aylesbury with just two patients and a
new era started for spinal injury patients.
At the centre, Guttmann treated the patient holistically -
medically, physically and psychologically - and within a few years, his
revolutionary approach had transformed an 80:20 death rate into 20:80.
But Guttmann had far greater ambitions. His goal was the
(then believed impossible) complete integration of these patients into society
as respectable and useful members despite their disability.
Guttmann had a profound understanding of the emotional
challenges a disabled person faced. He witnessed their extreme loss of
self-confidence and self-respect and the ensuing self-pity. All previous
definitions of worth were stripped and they saw no future for themselves.
But Guttmann saw past the injuries, the misery and the
despondency and looked instead at the potential of every human being to adapt
to circumstances and live meaningful, happy lives. In order to empower his
patients, he used sports as an integral part of the treatment, showing patients
that they were still competent and successful, helping them regain
self-confidence and self-discipline.
He introduced an athletic competition in the grounds of the
hospital to coincide with the opening day of the 1948 Olympics at London’s
Wembley Stadium.
The Games comprised of 16 competitors (including two women)
competing in archery on the grass outside the hospital ward. Though tiny in
size, the notion of paraplegics becoming athletes was completely unheard of.
The games at the clinic soon developed into sports
activities in which men, women and children could participate upon their
discharge and began attracting international competitors.
Just over a decade after that its humble beginnings on the
hospital lawn, 400 athletes from 23 countries competed in the first Paralympic
Games in Rome in 1960.
Though once inconceivable that disabled people could be
athletes, the Paralympic Games have become one of the most watched world-wide
sporting events, attended and followed by millions. The recent London 2012
Paralympic Games hosted over 4,250 athletes from 164 countries taking part in
20 sports with a record-breaking 2.7 million tickets were sold.
Ludwig Guttmann’s belief in the human spirit lives on not
only in the magnificent Paralympic games, but most importantly in each and every disabled person who is able to live as a
valuable and productive member of society.
Earning
a place in the next world at the last moment
Story
told by R’ Aaron Levy Shlita
It is hard for a person to admit
he was wrong and worse that his whole life was a mistake. Perhaps that is why
we find Baalei Teshuva at certain age groups and the older one gets the harder
it is to return. There has been cases of people who grew up before the
Holocaust in a religious household and years in a Concentration Camp broke them.
Finally at the end they went back to their foundation. But what about people
who had no foundation.
Our story starts with a man from a
Kibbutz who entered an Arachim Hotel Seminar. He had been over the years
walking on Shabbos from his Kibbutz to a Synagogue not far away. He came to the
Seminar because he was successful and happy but not satisfied spiritual. So
where does one start? With the Torah.
A day or two before the Seminar, Yischar
visited a person who was dying and an older member of the Kibbutz. The man was
what we call in Heb. ‘King of the land – a person who fought with the Palmach
had a successful career and was a respected elder in the community. As I became
more and more religious, he tried to discourage me from walking the
miles/kilometers back and forth to the Synagogue each Shabbos he said that he
was a non-believer. He said that it was not for him but I was a free man to do
what I did.
Now that he had only a few days
left to his life he spoke to me. All these years I was jealous of you and
wanted to do so but did not have the guts to do it.
Yischar asked the Rav, “How is it
that one wants to do something and says the opposite?” The reply was, “G-D
grants merits to people by other people that have merits. The man from the
Palmach managed to earn his place in the next world through you. Because the
Teshuva process involves regret about doing certain things. In this way, he was
able to earn his place in the next world.
