Parsha Acherei Mos, Pesach, story of Yom Tov in Siberia, news

Parsha Acharei Mos

This is the Parsha for Eretz Yisrael for Shabbos Motzei Chag but the 8th day of Pesach in Gallus they have a Yom Tov Torah Reading. Our Parsha returns back to where we left off on Yom HaShemini. The two sons of Aaron have died. It is hinted here that they had a big swelling of the souls of the two sons and they went into the Kodesh HaKodeshim. Now Aaron and his two remaining sons are given the laws of the Cohain on Yom Kippur. The remaining laws will be given in Parsha Emor. While we are on the laws of Korbanos more details are given for Peace Offerings. Our Parsha ends on forbidden relationships to lead to holiness among the nation.

16:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they drew near before the LORD, and died; 2 and the LORD said unto Moses: 'Speak unto Aaron thy brother, that he come not at all times into the holy place within the veil, before the ark-cover which is upon the ark; that he dies not; for I appear in the cloud upon the ark-cover. 3 Herewith shall Aaron come into the holy place: with a young bullock for a sin-offering, and a ram for a burnt-offering. 4 He shall put on the holy linen tunic, and he shall have the linen breeches upon his flesh, and shall be girded with the linen girdle, and with the linen mitre shall he be attired; they are the holy garments; and he shall bathe his flesh in water, and put them on.

Special garments with bells of the Cohain Gadol are required to enter the Holy of Holies and the Cohain goes to the Mikveh and is purified and stayed awake all night.

5 And he shall take of the congregation of the children of Israel two he-goats for a sin-offering, and one ram for a burnt-offering. 6 And Aaron shall present the bullock of the sin-offering, which is for himself, and make atonement for himself, and for his house.

The Torah recognizes that before the Cohain Gadol can make atonement for the entire house of Yisrael, he has to make atonement first for himself and his family and confess quietly before G-D. Please L-RD G-D I have sinned and transgressed. Specifics are great but also the standard confession is used. Thus he said as in the Yom Kippur Service in the Siddur.

We can view Aaron or whomever is the Cohain Gadol as an individual and his family more general until we do the general population. In this case it is learning of a Prat (individual) and Klal (general rule-population). The Prat leaves the Klal to tell us that in order to atone for others he must first be clean of sins. This is a Prat that invariable has an effect on the Klal as a whole. See Rabbi Yishmael's 13 principles of learning.

7 And he shall take the two  goats, and set them before the LORD at the door of the tent of meeting. 8 And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats: one lot for the LORD, and the other lot for Azazel.

The Mishnah describes that the lots were picked by the assistant/substitute Cohain Gadol. If to HASHEM came out in the right hand he would say 'Mr. Cohain Gadol raise your right hand' and if in the left etc. It seems that although the lottery was the same for pieces of parchment with the name HASHEM or Azazel on it, HASHEM always came out in the right hand.

9 And Aaron shall present the goat upon which the lot fell for the LORD, and offer him for a sin-offering. 10 But the goat, on which the lot fell for Azazel, shall be set alive before the LORD, to make atonement over him, to send him away for Azazel into the wilderness.

The booking of a person to take the Azazel out in the wilderness would guarantee full repentance for his sins. Most or all died that year and still there was high bidding for such a prize as to die sinless.

11 And Aaron shall present the bullock of the sin-offering, which is for himself, and shall make atonement for himself, and for his house, and shall slay the bullock of the sin-offering which is for himself.

As stated above, the Cohain had to be free of sin by confession before he could cleanse the sins of others.

12 And he shall take a censer full of coals of fire from off the altar before the LORD, and his hands full of sweet incense beaten small, and bring it within the veil. 13 And he shall put the incense upon the fire before the LORD, that the cloud of the incense may cover the ark-cover that is upon the testimony, that he dies not. 14 And he shall take of the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it with his finger upon the ark-cover on the east; and before the ark-cover shall he sprinkle of the blood with his finger seven times.

This is said as he sprinkled one above and seven below as we chant in unison each Yom Kippur. One plus one … one plus seven. This is in the repeat of the Musaf Service.

15 Then shall he slaughter the goat of the sin-offering, that is for the people, and bring his blood within the veil, and do with his blood as he did with the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it upon the ark-cover, and before the ark-cover. 16 And he shall make atonement for the holy place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions, even all their sins; and so shall he do for the tent of meeting, that dwells with them in the midst of their uncleanness.

Again the confession, sprinkling etc.

17 And there shall be no man in the tent of meeting when he goes in to make atonement in the holy place, until he come out, and have made atonement for himself, and for his household, and for all the assembly of Israel.

Only he goes in and as the corruption affected the Kahuna in the second Mikdash, bribery bought positions and Rabbi Yishmael the Sagan (assistant/replacement) took over for the dead Cohain that by that time, had a rope attached to him to pull him out. One Cohain either Shimon HaTzadik or another said that every Yom Kippur a man  (perhaps Michael) went in with him and came out with him. This year he went in and did not come out. Prepare a new Cohain Gadol for next year, he said.

18 And he shall go out unto the altar that is before the LORD, and make atonement for it; and shall take of the blood of the bullock, and of the blood of the goat, and put it upon the horns of the altar round about. 19 And he shall sprinkle of the blood upon it with his finger seven times, and cleanse it, and hallow it from the uncleanness of the children of Israel.

Often Marjoram 'branches' are used but here specifically the right thumb was used.

20 And when he has made an end of atoning for the holy place, and the tent of meeting, and the altar, he shall present the live goat. 21 And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions, even all their sins; and he shall put them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of an appointed man into the wilderness. 22 And the goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities unto a land which is cut off; and he shall let go the goat in the wilderness.

Sins were confessed and hands placed on the head of the goat. The goat was brought to a top of a cliff and thrown over for otherwise the goat might jump back and forth. The goat was broken. There was a sign in the Temple that a scarlet thread was placed there and when the goat died, it turned white. "If your sins be as red as scarlet they shall become pure and white as snow." Yishayahu 1:18.

23 And Aaron shall come into the tent of meeting, and shall put off the linen garments, which he put on when he went into the holy place, and shall leave them there. 24 And he shall bathe his flesh in water in a holy place and put on his other vestments, and come forth, and offer his burnt-offering and the burnt-offering of the people, and make atonement for himself and for the people.

During Yom Kippur, the Cohain Gadol went to the Mikveh 5 times and each time changed his clothes. Atonement required Kavana, proper Cohain Gadol and proper pure Garments.

25 And the fat of the sin-offering shall he make smoke upon the altar. 26 And he that lets go the goat for Azazel shall wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he may come into the camp.

This is the man who took the goat, has all his sins erased and will die within the year. Imagine a Meir Lansky type truly repentant returning to HASHEM all the more so a person known as Tzadik.

27 And the bullock of the sin-offering, and the goat of the sin-offering, whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the holy place, shall be carried forth without the camp; and they shall burn in the fire their skins, and their flesh, and their dung.

Everything is burned but parts like skin and dung that do not land on the Mizbayach are burned outside the camp in a pure and holy place.

28 And he that burns them shall wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he may come into the camp. 29 And it shall be a statute forever unto you: in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, ye shall afflict your souls, and shall do no manner of work, the home-born, or the stranger that sojourns among you. 30 For on this day shall atonement be made for you, to cleanse you; from all your sins shall ye be clean before the LORD. 31 It is a sabbath of solemn rest unto you, and ye shall afflict your souls; it is a statute forever.

As far as work goes, it is like a Shabbos.

32 And the priest, who shall be anointed and who shall be consecrated to be priest in his father's stead, shall make the atonement, and shall put on the linen garments, even the holy garments.

Since people do not live forever, after Aaron will be Eleazar and then Pinchas etc.

33 And he shall make atonement for the most holy place, and he shall make atonement for the tent of meeting and for the altar; and he shall make atonement for the priests and for all the people of the assembly. 34 And this shall be an everlasting statute unto you, to make atonement for the children of Israel because of all their sins once in the year.' And he did as the LORD commanded Moses.

An everlasting Kahuna shall be in the family of Aaron and the same with the kingship of David (Dovid).

17:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 Speak unto Aaron, and unto his sons, and unto all the children of Israel, and say unto them: This is the thing which the LORD hath commanded, saying: 3 What man soever there be of the house of Israel, that slays an ox, or lamb, or goat, in the camp, or that slaughtered it without the camp, 4 and hath not brought it unto the door of the tent of meeting, to present it as an offering unto the LORD before the tabernacle of the LORD, blood shall be imputed unto that man; he hath shed blood; and that man shall be cut off from among his people.

There are two interpretations here. The times of the Mishkan for one to eat, he had to slaughter the animal even for food by the tent to make it supervised and kosher. The standard Pshat today is that for a Korban one has to bring it to the Mikdash. The man would lay his hands on the Korban. The man or the Cohanim would slaughter and then the Cohanim would remove their gifts, flay and sprinkle the blood. Some remains for the owner of the Korban and his family or guests.

5 To the end that the children of Israel may bring their sacrifices, which they sacrifice in the open field, even that they may bring them unto the LORD, unto the door of the tent of meeting, unto the priest, and sacrifice them for sacrifices of peace-offerings unto the LORD. 6 And the priest shall dash the blood against the altar of the LORD at the door of the tent of meeting, and make the fat smoke for a sweet savor unto the LORD.

Dashing with Marjoram twigs or 'branches' and not with the thumb.

7 And they shall no more sacrifice their sacrifices unto the satyrs, after whom they go astray. This shall be a statute forever unto them throughout their generations. 8 And thou shalt say unto them: Whatsoever man there be of the house of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among them, that offers a burnt-offering or sacrifice, 9 and bringeth it not unto the door of the tent of meeting, to sacrifice it unto the LORD, even that man shall be cut off from his people. 10 And whatsoever man there be of the house of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among them, that eats any manner of blood, I will set My face against that soul that eats blood, and will cut him off from among his people. 11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood; and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement by reason of the life.

No sacrifices like the local pagans but only as commanded to HASHEM.

12 Therefore I said unto the children of Israel: No soul of you shall eat blood, neither shall any stranger that sojourns among you eat blood. 13 And whatsoever man there be of the children of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among them, that taketh in hunting any beast or fowl that may be eaten, he shall pour out the blood thereof, and cover it with dust. 14 For as to the life of all flesh, the blood thereof is all one with the life thereof; therefore I said unto the children of Israel: Ye shall eat the blood of no manner of flesh; for the life of all flesh is the blood thereof; whosoever eats it shall be cut off.

Blood of meat and foul is forbidden to eat but of fish is considered juice and there must be a difference in soul dynamics which I do not understand with my lack of in depth learning on this.

15 And every soul that eats that which dies of itself, or that which is torn of beasts, whether he be home-born or a stranger, he shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even; then shall he be clean. 16 But if he wash them not, nor bathe his flesh, then he shall bear his iniquity.

Dies by itself is a Nevaila or torn by beasts or head chopped off is Trafe.

18:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them: I am the LORD your God. 3 After the doings of the land of Egypt, wherein ye dwelt, shall ye not do; and after the doings of the land of Canaan, whither I bring you, shall ye not do; neither shall ye walk in their statutes. 4 Mine ordinances shall ye do, and My statutes shall ye keep, to walk therein: I am the LORD your God. 5 Ye shall therefore keep My statutes, and Mine ordinances, which if a man do, he shall live by them: I am the LORD.

In case some wise guy should ask why must he keep the statutes and ordinances the answer is I am the L-RD!

6 None of you shall approach to any that is near of kin to him, to uncover their nakedness. I am the LORD.  7 The nakedness of thy father, and the nakedness of thy mother, shalt thou not uncover: she is thy mother; thou shalt not uncover her nakedness. 8 The nakedness of thy father's wife shalt thou not uncover: it is thy father's nakedness. 9 The nakedness of thy sister, the daughter of thy father, or the daughter of thy mother, whether born at home, or born abroad, even their nakedness thou shalt not uncover. 10 The nakedness of thy son's daughter, or of thy daughter's daughter, even their nakedness thou shalt not uncover; for theirs is thine own nakedness. 11 The nakedness of thy father's wife's daughter, begotten of thy father, she is thy sister, thou shalt not uncover her nakedness. 12 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father's sister: she is thy father's near kinswoman. 13 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy mother's sister; for she is thy mother's near kinswoman. 14 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father's brother, thou shalt not approach to his wife: she is thine aunt. 15 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy daughter-in-law: she is thy son' wife; thou shalt not uncover her nakedness. 16 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy brother's wife: it is thy brother's nakedness.  17 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of a woman and her daughter; thou shalt not take her son's daughter, or her daughter's daughter, to uncover her nakedness: they are near kinswomen; it is lewdness.

All these are incestuous relations except the case of Yebum or Levirate Marriage where a brother dies childless and permission is granted to rebuild his seed.

18 And thou shalt not take a woman to her sister, to be a rival to her, to uncover her nakedness, beside the other in her lifetime.

But if the sister dies, it sometimes is a merit to take her as she can feel like an aunt-mother to his children.

19 And thou shalt not approach unto a woman to uncover her nakedness, as long as she is impure by her uncleanness.

This includes his wife and in the days of kings a concubine. For during the Menses they are forbidden by Kares but after the Mikveh are permitted.

20 And thou shalt not lie carnally with thy neighbors' wife, to defile thyself with her. 21 And thou shalt not give any of thy seed to set them apart to Molech, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the LORD. 22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind; it is abomination.

The L-RD views male homosexuality as an abomination – period and everybody with understanding will not try to WOKE his way around the Torah. For there is a Din and there is a Dayan and after 120 years somebody has to pay the piper.

23 And thou shalt not lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith; neither shall any woman stand before a beast, to lie down thereto; it is perversion.

Perverse is sick and will get the death penalty like the homosexuality. However, as debase as it is, it is not on the level of an abomination.

24 Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things; for in all these the nations are defiled, which I cast out from before you. 25 And the land was defiled, therefore I did visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land vomited out her inhabitants.

In short, if you do these things there is a limited amount of time before you are vomited out.

26 Ye therefore shall keep My statutes and Mine ordinances, and shall not do any of these abominations; neither the home-born, nor the stranger that sojourns among you-- 27 for all these abominations have the men of the land done, that were before you, and the land is defiled-- 28 that the land vomit not you out also, when ye defile it, as it vomited out the nation that was before you. 29 For whosoever shall do any of these abominations, even the souls that do them shall be cut off from among their people. 30 Therefore shall ye keep My charge, that ye do not any of these abominable customs, which were done before you, and that ye defile not yourselves therein: I am the LORD your God.

Some more ideas of the Seder Night

Rabbi Sharabani Shlita: The Sephardim outside of an ill person do not proper Seder Observance without 4 glasses with wine in them. The first cup should be between 3.3 to 5.0 ounces with a person drinking a majority of the cup. Afterwards he can drink a mixture of grape juice and complete the meal. Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky was asked on some occasions about if one completes the Mitzva using only grape juice.

Rabbi Yacov Love Shlita, retired Congregation Rabbi, spoke about two themes for the Seder. One we were pagans aka my forefather was in Padam Aram and not the Charedi of the block to put it mildly. The second place tells that we were slaves in Egypt. Nothing to brag about from our standpoint but to state that we were slaves in Egypt. This is where we grew-up to become a nation.

We have come a long way since then but no Moshiach yet which means two possibilities. Either we don't deserve Moshiach or the time is not ripe for his rescuing us.

A lovely Siberian Dance. By Rabb Yerachmiel Tilles.

http://www.ascentofsafed.com/cgi-bin/ascent.cgi?Name=881-04.html

His crime was spreading Judaism; his punishment was many years of hard labor in Eastern Siberia. That is where Reb Asher Sasonkin found himself in prison camp with about 3000 others. Most of them were political prisoners, incarcerated for being "anti-revolutionary," but there were some hard-core criminals sentenced for various crimes of violence as well. The prisoners were divided into small groups of twelve called "brigades," with each brigade being led by a "brigadier," who also was a prisoner.

After some time, R. Asher was transferred to a different barrack in the camp, under the supervision of a different brigadier. He was happy about it because he quickly found there a quiet unobtrusive corner where he could pray without having to worry too much about intruding hostile eyes.

That first day, while praying in his "spot," he overheard a conversation between one of the other prisoners in his brigade and his new brigadier.

"On Saturday only eleven of us will be working," the prisoner informed his leader. This Zhid ('Yid'-'Jew') refuses to work on their Shabbat."

The brigadier responded quickly, "Don't worry. With me he won't be able to pull any tricks. He'll work on Saturday too, like everyone else."

"I advise you not to start up with this Zhid," rejoined the prisoner, a non-Jew, "otherwise you might get ridiculed." [The stubborn, against-all-odds successful Shabbat observance in the labor camp environment of Reb Asher (and a few other Chabad chasidim) was well-known in most of the Soviet prison camps -YT].

The very next day was Shemini Atzeret. The brigadier came over to Reb Asher and said, "Be ready, in just a few minutes we are setting out to work."

Sasonkin firmly shook his head, saying that he could not work this day.

"And tomorrow?"

"Also not."

"And why not?" queried the surprised brigadier. "Neither today nor tomorrow is Shabbat."
Reb Asher explained quickly that these were the final two days of the Sukkot festival, so it was forbidden to work.

The brigadier recalled that in his youth he had seen Jews erecting flimsy wooden huts every autumn and camping in them for a few days. He smiled to himself and said, "Listen, I'm willing to allow you to not work, but you must leave together with us for the workplace and be there with all the other workers."

Reb Asher happily assented.

About 200 men arrived at the designated place, which turned out to be a construction site. It was a huge area enclosed by layers of barbed wire, filled with buildings and other structures in various phases of incompletion. The workers spread throughout the area to their assigned projects, Reb Asher ducked into a building that was a bit distant from the others and with no one else there. "A quiet place to daven (pray)." He thought to himself, and immediately began the morning service for the festival, which fortunately he knew by heart.

Absorbed in his prayers, he wasn't conscious of the hours flying by, when suddenly a young man from his brigade came running in. "Here you are!" he exclaimed. He began speaking very fast. Reb Asher could see that he was extremely nervous, frightened even.

"What are you doing? Don't you realize that it is already lunchtime? The officer discovered that you weren't present. He told the chief guard, who exploded in anger. He even threatened our brigadier that he would lock him in solitary confinement for 15 days. The brigadier is pleading and making every excuse he can think of, but the chief guard keeps insisting that since he is the brigadier, he is the one responsible and must be punished. Hurry! Maybe your appearance will calm down the officer."

The two of them ran as fast as they could to where their brigade was gathered. The brigadier immediately confronted Reb Asher. His face was pale and fearful. "This is how you repay the favor I did for you?" Reb Asher apologized sincerely, and tried to explain that he had lost track of the time while he was praying.

The brigadier calmed down somewhat, and instructed to serve lunch to the prisoners. To Reb Asher however, he insisted that he remain close to him and stay within eyesight. Meanwhile, Reb Asher was becoming quite apprehensive. "If the officer became so angered at the brigadier to the extent he was prepared to punish him with 15 days of solitary confinement, what will happen to me?" he worried to himself. He briefly considered running off and hiding somewhere until tempers cooled off, but he quickly realized that could backfire and complicate his situation even further.

While these thoughts were tumbling around in his head as he stood next to the brigadier all of a sudden the officer strode up to them. Reb Asher felt his blood was about to freeze in his veins. He quickly snuck a glance at the officer expecting the worst. Much to his surprise though, nothing happened.

The officer shot him a sharp, penetrating gaze, but then a brief smile played on his lips, and he continued on his way without saying a word.

When mealtime was ended, the brigadier told two other prisoners to be responsible for Reb Asher, threatening them with dire consequences if he should disappear again.

The sun set. It became evening. That meant it was already Simchat Torah, yet there he was, stuck in the labor camp under watchful eyes. He began to think about the holiness of the festival, its prayers that everyone prayed, and its songs that were sung in every synagogue. He recalled the joyous dancing and the happy faces. "But I, what kind of Simchat Torah can I have here in such a place? If only I could at least sing loudly a Simchat Torah song in honor of the festival."

At that moment, one of the two prisoners assigned to prevent him disappearing turned towards him and said, "You are supposed to be working just as we are. It is only because of your holiday that you are exempted. At least sing for us one of your lively Jewish holiday tunes."

Reb Asher thanked G-d in his heart. Almost immediately he responded to the request which so neatly matched his own desire and began to sing a Simchat Torah "hakafa" dance melody. His arms he loosely folded in front of his chest as if he were in shul and clasping one of the mantle-covered Torah scrolls. He closed his eyes and started to dance around in a circle while continuing to sing.

"These two gentiles think that I am dancing for their sake," he thought to himself, "but in truth I am dancing in honor of the Torah."

He continued to prance around enthusiastically, and danced and whirled for a long time. When he finally ceased, the two who had been watching him in amazement with big smiles, clapped their hands loudly and called out "Bravobravo! Great!"

This was just the beginning of his joyful "virtual" Simchat Torah. At the end of their workday, when the prisoners all gathered together to be counted, one of Reb Asher's 'escorts' addressed the assembly with a loud proclamation: "This Zhid knows how to sing and dance really well. Ask him for a demonstration and see for yourselves."

Implied was that this would be compensation for the long afternoon of work caused by his disappearance. Reb Asher didn't wait to be invited a second time. He leapt into the lively dance, even more energetically than before, all the while singing happy Simchat Torah songs one after another, while keeping his eyes tightly shut.

For the 200 prisoner onlookers it was somewhat of a bizarre sight to see a religious Jew hopping about and singing and dancing so energetically. They all wore broad smiles and clapped their hands loudly to the beat of each song's rhythm.

In those moments, totally absorbed in the rapture of his singing and dancing, Reb Asher forgot completely that he was in a grueling labor camp, in primitive distant Siberia, and forgot even that he was a prisoner. He remembered only that he was a Jew, and a Chasid, and that the day was Simchat Torah. In his heart and soul, he was dancing furiously in the wild Simchat Torah celebration in the Lubavitch synagogue of his beloved Rebbe, as he always did every year before, and prayed to be able to do year after year in the future, whether in Rostov or in Petersburg on in Brooklyn.

Biographical note:
Asher Sasonkin [?- 5 Heshvan 5748 (Oct. 1988 C.E.)] spent many years in Siberia for the "crime" of helping to keep Judaism alive in communist USSR. After his release, he made his way to Brooklyn, where he served as a shammes in "770" (Lubavitch International Headquarters Synagogue) for the rest of his life, and where his fiery prayers inspired new generations of young chasidim.
