Parsha Shelach Lecha, spies and too much info, stories, news.

Mazel Tov to my grandson and wife who just brought into the world my third great grandson (no evil eye). I did have an emergency so the commentary is shorter see the section on Tzitzis for details.

Parsha Behaalosecha Connecting Points

I noticed that my readership dropped to half. It is no accident half my readership is in Israel and the other half in the diaspora. Some of the drop is attributed by College Students and Teachers during the final examination season. I always assumed that an internet Savvy Person would look up https://rabbipauli.blogspot.com/2022/06/parsha-behallosecha-stories-news.html . The Principle of ‘Ki M-Tzion Tietze Torah’ or from Zion shall the Torah Proceed has been my guide.

Therefore, I have decided to bring down connecting points between the two Parshiyos. Behaalosecha time line starts before or on Rosh Chodesh Nissan 2449. The Menorah is the first thing lit in the Mishkan and fire comes from heaven to ignite the Mizbayach. Similar to Kriyas Yam Suf (splitting of the sea) man does by first with belief the original action and then G-D follows through. As if to say, “Show me that you believe by opening up a bit and I will open up the world to you”.

Behaalosecha reviews the Mitzvah of Pesach one year after Yetzias Mitzrayim and those who dealt with burial being allowed a Pesach Sheni. Five days afterwards, the cloud arises from the Aron and the Bnei Yisrael start to march for three days until the Shechina re-rests on the Aron. The Aron would smooth out the path of the Bnei Yisrael during the days of belief like with Moshe and Yoshua. But in the days of Shoftim, the Teva was captured. Why? Because some of the people were following Avoda Zara and others had very weak belief. It is not like the Tinkerbell story within Peter Pan but rather the passive or active intervention of HASHEM.

We see in Shemos 14:31And Israel saw the great hand, which the Lord had used upon the Egyptians, and the people feared the Lord, and they believed in the Lord and in Moses, His servant. This is the idea: “the people feared the Lord, and they believed in the Lord” and Moshe HIS Eved.

The Parsha ends by the minimum date of 23 Iyar 2449 for the Mishkan was reconstructed and the Ark resting there. The people were ready to enter the land.

Parsha Shelach Lecha

So where between the 23rd of Iyar and the 28th or 29th of Sivan when the spies went out, the people asked Moshe to send spies. Elections by the people or tribal elders took place. Strong men chosen for their strength, skill and fear of G-D.

Yehoshua in our Haftorah this week did the analysis of what went wrong and when he sends out the spies, he takes 100% fear and belief in G-D and towards men fearless. He does if quietly (Sefer Yoshua says the word similar to Deaf-mute). The men are Pinchas and Calev and when they arrived at the house of Rachav, are made known to both she and the people of the town.

She saves them, hides them from the people who wish them harm and sends the army after them on a wild goose chase while she gives them guidance where and how to hide.

The first time they were hidden by the funerals of the leaders in each city and not noticed. The first miracle was greater done by HASHEM. The second was done by simple and practical means. Their love and fear of HASHEM protected them but not through an exposed miracle.

13:1  And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 'Send thou men, that they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel; of every tribe of their fathers shall ye send a man, everyone a prince among them.' 3 And Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran according to the commandment of the LORD; all of them men who were heads of the children of Israel. 4 And these were their names: of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur. 5 Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori. 6 Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Yephunneh. 7 Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph. 8 Of the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun. 9 Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu. 10 Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi. 11 Of the tribe of Joseph, namely, of the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi. 12 Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli. 13 Of the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael. 14 Of the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi. 15 Of the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi. 16 These are the names of the men that Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua.

Leaders and well-trained soldiers were chosen from each tribe.

17 And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said unto them: 'Get you up here into the South, and go up into the mountains; 18 and see the land, what it is; and the people that dwells therein, whether they are strong or weak, whether they are few or many;

Moshe’s mistake was not to trust entirely in HASHEM . Perhaps our leaders who are not on a level near Moshe  deed to know who dwells, if they were strong or weak, few or many. We did not need to ask bout the weakness or strength it truly was enough to know that HASHEM was with us.

19 and what the land is that they dwell in, whether it is good or bad; and what cities they are that they dwell in, whether in camps, or in strongholds;

We were told it was a land flowing with milk and honey and ‘Dayenu’ it should have been enough.

20 and what the land is, whether it is fat or lean, whether there is wood therein, or not. And be ye of good courage, and bring of the fruit of the land.'--Now the time was the time of the first-ripe grapes.-- 21 So they went up, and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehov, at the entrance to Hamath.

In northern Syria.

22 And they went up into the South, and came unto Hebron; and Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were there.--Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.--

Calev prayed by the Avos and avoided the bad advice of the 10 spies.

23 And they came unto the valley of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bore it upon a pole between two; they took also of the pomegranates, and of the figs.--

They left on the 28 or 29th of Sivan and came back the 8th of Av.

24 That place was called the valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the children of Israel cut down from thence.-- 25 And they returned from spying out the land at the end of forty days. 26 And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. 27 And they told him, and said: 'We came unto the land whither thou sent us, and surely it flows with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.

Have you even seen fruit like this?

28 Howbeit the people that dwell in the land are fierce, and the cities are fortified, and very great; and moreover, we saw the children of Anak there.

Weak or strong does not equal fierce and it only put fear in the hearts of the people.

29 Amalek dwelleth in the land of the South; and the Hittite, and thee Jebusite, and the Amorite, dwell in the mountains; and the Canaanite dwelleth by the sea, and along by the side of the Jordan.' 30 And Caleb stilled the people toward Moses, and said: 'We should go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.'

What’s your problem? Be happy HASHEM is with us.

31 But the men that went up with him said: 'We are not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.' 32 And they spread an evil report of the land which they had spied out unto the children of Israel, saying: 'The land, through which we have passed to spy it out, is a land that eats up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of great stature. 33 And there we saw the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, who come of the Nephilim; and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.'

In our sight we were grasshoppers. They were perhaps taller than slaves who had grown up on insufficient conditions and vitamins to enhance growth of the Bnei Yisrael like the heights of Egyptian and Canaan Peoples.

14:1 And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night. 2 And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron; and the whole congregation said unto them: 'Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would we had died in this wilderness! 3 And wherefore doth the LORD bring us unto this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will be a prey; were it not better for us to return into Egypt?' 4 And they said one to another: 'Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.'

Just about a few weeks after the army started they were routed not by a loss in war but words scaring the cowardly slaves.

5 Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel. 6 And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Yephunneh, who were of them that spied out the land, rent their clothes. 7 And they spoke unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying: 'The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceeding good land. 8 If the LORD delight in us, then He will bring us into this land, and give it unto us--a land which flows with milk and honey. 9 Only rebel not against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us; their defense is removed from over them, and the LORD is with us; fear them not.'

This time was too much and HASHEM is going to finish these cowards off.

10 But all the congregation bade stone them with stones, when the glory of the LORD appeared in the tent of meeting unto all the children of Israel.

These men had a riot of panic on their hands.

11 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'How long will this people despise Me? and how long will they not believe in Me, for all the signs which I have wrought among them? 12 I will smite them with the pestilence, and destroy them, and will make of thee a nation greater and mightier than they.'

HASHEM Yisborach is saying, “I’ve had it. Enough is enough for this ungrateful people.

13 And Moses said unto the LORD: 'When the Egyptians shall hear--for Thou brought up this people in Thy might from among them-- 14 they will say to the inhabitants of this land, who have heard that Thou LORD art in the midst of this people; inasmuch as Thou LORD art seen face to face, and Thy cloud stands over them, and Thou goes before them, in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night; 15 now if Thou shalt kill this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of Thee will speak, saying: 16 Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which He swore unto them, therefore He hath slain them in the wilderness. 17 And now, I pray Thee, let the power of the LORD be great, according as Thou hast spoken, saying: 18 The LORD is slow to anger, and plenteous in lovingkindness, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, upon the third and upon the fourth generation. 19 Pardon, I pray Thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of Thy lovingkindness, and according as Thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.' 20 And the LORD said: 'I have pardoned according to thy word.

I will not blot them out at once nor kill off their young ones.

21 But in very deed, as I live--and all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD-- 22 surely all those men that have seen My glory, and My signs, which I wrought in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have put Me to proof these ten times, and have not hearkened to My voice; 23 surely they shall not see the land which I swore unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that despised Me see it. 24 But My servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed Me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it. 25 Now the Amalekite and the Canaanite dwell in the Vale; tomorrow turn ye, and get you into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.'

I will not bring these weaklings near Amalek or a Canaan inhabitant.

26 And the LORD spoke unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying: 27 'How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, that keep murmuring against Me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they keep murmuring against Me. 28 Say unto them: As I live, saith the LORD, surely as ye have spoken in Mine ears, so will I do to you: 29 your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness, and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, ye that have murmured against Me;

The Hebrew does not say bodies but carcasses like that of animals who die.

30 surely ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I lifted up My hand that I would make you dwell therein, save Calev the son of Yephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun. 31 But your little ones, that ye said would be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have rejected. 32 But as for you, your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness. 33 And your children shall be wanderers in the wilderness forty years, and shall bear your straying, until your carcasses be consumed in the wilderness. 34 After the number of the days in which ye spied out the land, even forty days, for every day a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know My displeasure. 35 I the LORD have spoken, surely this will I do unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against Me; in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.' 36 And the men, whom Moses sent to spy out the land, and who, when they returned, made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up an evil report against the land, 37 even those men that did bring up an evil report of the land, died by the plague before the LORD.

They died on the spot along with the main leaders of the riot.

38 But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Yephunneh, remained alive of those men that went to spy out the land. 39 And Moses told these words unto all the children of Israel; and the people mourned greatly. 40 And they rose up early in the morning, and got them up to the top of the mountain, saying: 'Lo, we are here, and will go up unto the place which the LORD hath promised; for we have sinned.' 41 And Moses said: 'Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of the LORD, seeing it shall not prosper? 42 Go not up, for the LORD is not among you; that ye be not smitten down before your enemies. 43 For there the Amalekite and the Canaanite are before you, and ye shall fall by the sword; forasmuch as ye are turned back from following the LORD, and the LORD will not be with you.' 44 But they presumed to go up to the top of the mountain; nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and Moses, departed not out of the camp. 45 Then the Amalekite and the Canaanite, who dwelt in that hill-country, came down, and smote them and beat them down, even unto Hormah.

These are the dry bones that the prophet saw in the valley.

15:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them: When ye are come into the land of your habitations, which I give unto you, 3 and will make an offering by fire unto the LORD, a burnt-offering, or a sacrifice, in fulfilment of a vow clearly uttered, or as a freewill-offering, or in your appointed seasons, to make a sweet savor unto the LORD, of the herd, or of the flock; … 14 And if a stranger sojourn with you, or whosoever may be among you, throughout your generations, and will offer an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto the LORD; as ye do, so he shall do. 15 As for the congregation, there shall be one statute both for you, and for the stranger that sojourns with you, a statute for ever throughout your generations; as ye are, so shall the stranger be before the LORD. 16 One law and one ordinance shall be both for you, and for the stranger that sojourns with you.

Once you come into the land you shall do this.

17 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 18 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them: When ye come into the land whither I bring you, 19 then it shall be, that, when ye eat of the bread of the land, ye shall set apart a portion for a gift unto the LORD. 20 Of the first of your dough ye shall set apart a cake for a gift; as that which is set apart of the threshing-floor, so shall ye set it apart. 21 Of the first of your dough ye shall give unto the LORD a portion for a gift throughout your generations.

This is the laws of Challah.

22 And when ye shall err, and not observe all these commandments, which the LORD hath spoken unto Moses, 23 even all that the LORD hath commanded you by the hand of Moses, from the day that the LORD gave commandment, and onward throughout your generations; … 27 And if one person sin through error, then he shall offer a she-goat of the first year for a sin-offering. 28 And the priest shall make atonement for the soul that erred, when he sins through error, before the LORD, to make atonement for him; and he shall be forgiven, 29 both he that is home-born among the children of Israel, and the stranger that sojourns among them: ye shall have one law for him that doeth aught in error.

Both the whole congregation, king, Cohain Gadol, to the last in the congregation – such as hewers of wood or water carriers in the days of Moshe, if they sin in error; they must bring a Korban and repent.

30 But the soul that doeth aught with a high hand, whether he be home-born or a stranger, the same blasphemes the LORD; and that soul shall be cut off from among his people. 31 Because he hath despised the word of the LORD, and hath broken His commandment; that soul shall utterly be cut off, his iniquity shall be upon him.

Sinning on purpose will involve being cut off in this world and the next.

32 And while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering sticks upon the sabbath day. 33 And they that found him gathering sticks brought him unto Moses and Aaron, and unto all the congregation. 34 And they put him in ward, because it had not been declared what should be done to him.

This is the only time that Shabbos violation is mentioned in the Torah. Unlike, today the man was captured and put on trial. Today we have too many violators and would have to give the death penalty to most of Israel. Therefore, we temporary ignore the Shabbos violation and even the LBGT nonsense so as not to commit mass murders of people before the Goy but let G-D do it on ‘THAT DAY’ - Zachariah.

35 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'The man shall surely be put to death; all the congregation shall stone him with stones without the camp.' 36 And all the congregation brought him without the camp, and stoned him with stones, and he died, as the LORD commanded Moses.

One violator of Shabbos willingly got what he deserved.

37 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 38 'Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them throughout their generations fringes in the corners of their garments, and that they put with the fringe of each corner a thread of blue. 39 And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the LORD, and do them; and that ye go not about after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye use to go astray; 40 that ye may remember and do all My commandments, and be holy unto your God. 41 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am the LORD your God.'

THIS was my Bar Mitzvah section and I had plenty to write as it is part of the Shema and to write more on the Parsha but unfortunately somebody pressed gas instead of brakes and rear-ended my wife’s vehicle. We sent some time by the emergency center last night. It was opened despite the doctor’s strike due to the attempted murder of a doctor. Today we spent 4.5 hrs. getting a check-up and CT for my wife as she is basically healthy with some aches and pains for her trouble and very shook up.

The Nobel Prize-Winning Neuroscientist that Mussolini could not stop.

By Judy Gruen

https://aish.com/the-nobel-prize-winning-neuroscientist-mussolini-couldnt-stop/

“If I had not been discriminated against or had not suffered persecution, I would never have received the Nobel Prize,” wrote pioneering neuroscientist Rita Levi-Montalcini, who shared the 1986 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with biochemist Stanley Cohen, Ph.D.

In 1952, Levi-Montalcini had made the discovery of nerve growth factor (NGF), a protein that causes developing cells to grow by stimulating surrounding nerve tissue. In related research, Cohen had discovered epidermal growth factor, which stimulates the proliferation of epithelial cells. Both scientists conducted their research while faculty members of Washington University, St. Louis. Levi-Montalcini’s findings led to major advancements in the understanding of cell and organ growth, as well as many serious conditions including tumors, developmental malformations, cancers, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s.

Born on April 22, 1909 in Turin, Italy, Levi-Montalcini had first dreamed of becoming a writer. In her 1988 memoir, “In Praise of Imperfection,” she wrote lovingly of her family life, which included two sisters and one brother: “The four of us enjoyed a most wonderful family atmosphere filled with love and reciprocal devotion. Both parents were highly cultured and instilled in us their high appreciation of intellectual pursuit. It was, however, a typical Victorian style of life, all decisions being taken by the head of the family, the husband and father.”

The paterfamilias, Adamo Levi, only allowed his son, Gino, to attend university, despite the exceptional intelligence of all his children. Gino became an accomplished sculptor and architect, and Rita’s twin sister, Paola, was allowed to develop a career as an artist, becoming a renowned painter. But Adamo feared that careers would interfere with his daughters’ roles as wives and mothers.

Rita began to forge her own path with the tenacity and focus that characterized her entire life. “At twenty, I realized that I could not possibly adjust to a feminine role as conceived by my father and asked him permission to engage in a professional career,” she said during her speech accepting her Nobel Prize. She had felt enormous sorrow at the death of the family’s longtime nanny, Giovanna, and was determined to become a doctor and heal the sick. After hearing his daughter out, Adamo no longer stood in her way. Within eight months, she had completed academic gaps in Latin, Greek and mathematics, and graduated from high school. She entered medical school in Turin in 1930, one of only seven women in the school, including her cousin Eugenia.

“It was an important period of my life, despite being very demanding,” she later wrote. “I was very happy because I felt I had found the right direction in life.” She studied under the famous Italian histologist Giuseppe Levi, who taught a rigorous and unique method of approaching biological science. After graduating from medical school summa cum laude with a degree in Medicine and Surgery in 1936, Levi-Montalcini began a specialization program in neurology and psychiatry. But that same year, Mussolini issued the "Manifesto of Race," the first of a slew of antisemitic and racial laws that by 1938 had stripped Italian Jews of their citizenship as well as any government, professional or university positions.

Undeterred in her mission, Levi-Montalcini accepted an invitation to perform research at a neurological institute in Brussels, but that role was short-lived. As soon as word spread about Germany’s planned invasion of Belgium, she returned to her family in Turin. The Levi-Montalcinis chose to “pursue some activity that needed neither support nor connection with the outside Aryan world where we lived” instead of emigrating.

Rita Levi-Montalcini built a small research unit in her bedroom studying chick embryos, inspired by the early work of Viktor Hamburger, PhD, who was studying how wing precursors in chick embryos promote embryonic growth and development of the nerves that control them. During this time, Italian journals would not publish the work of Jewish scientists, so Levi-Montalcini published her findings abroad or through the Vatican. She later wrote, “I should thank Mussolini for having declared me to be of an inferior race. This led me to the joy of working, not anymore, unfortunately, in university institutes but in a bedroom.”

When the Germans invaded Italy in the fall of 1943, the Levi-Montalcini family fled to Florence, where they lived underground until the end of the war. Rita Levi-Montalcini was working with the Red Cross in Florence, treating severely ill and wounded war refugees. A typhus epidemic hit the refugee camp, killing as many as fifty patients a day. The experience was so emotionally draining that she decided to focus the rest of her career on research and not clinical medicine.

After the war she was reinstated in her position at the University, but Dr. Hamburger, who had been impressed by Levi-Montalcini’s published work that was connected to his own, invited her to work with him at Washington University. This invitation changed the course of her life. A planned one-year research collaboration proved so fruitful that she remained for 30 years, although from 1962 onward she divided her time between St. Louis and Rome, where she had established a research unit and for several years also served as Director of the Institute of Cell Biology of the Italian National Council of Research in Rome.

In 2001, her trailblazing work led her to be appointed an Italian senator for life by the President of the Italian Republic, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, a prestigious position awarded “for outstanding patriotic merits in the social, scientific, artistic or literary field.”

Levi-Montalcini never felt drawn toward motherhood or domesticity and never married. In a 2006 interview she said, “My life has been enriched by excellent human relations, work and interests. I have never felt lonely.” Together with her twin sister Paola, she also created the Rita Levi-Montalcini Onlus Foundation, which funds educational scholarships for women in Africa. Active till nearly the end of her long life, she continued to write and gave public lectures. At the age of 99, she stood on stage for nearly one hour, speaking to a group of nearly 1,000 students, showing no signs of weariness. “There was something magnetic about her, someone so captivating that you couldn’t help but listen to her every word,” said one listener.

One year later, in 2009, Levi-Montalcini said, "At 100, I have a mind that is superior – thanks to experience – than when I was 20." She died on December 30, 2012, at age 103.

In addition to the Nobel Prize, Levi-Montalcini was heaped with honors and awards for her pioneering neuroscience research. In 1963 she was the first woman scientist to receive the Max Weinstein Award, given by the United Cerebral Palsy Association for outstanding contributions in neurological research. In 1975 she became the first woman to be installed in the Pontifical Scientific Academy, and received the National Medal of Science in 1987.

Having defied stereotypes about what women could achieve, and defying Nazi and fascist attempts to cut her off from her work, Rita Levi-Montalcini remained an unstoppable force to be reckoned with, a woman who had “a hurricane of ideas and an impetus to know more and to go forward,” said Pietro Grasso, former President of the Italian Senate.

In her memoir Levi-Montalcini wrote, “Life does not end with death. What you pass on to others remains. Immortality is not the body, which will one day die. That does not matter. . . of importance is the message you leave to others. That is immortality.”
