Parsha Va'eschanan Part 2, Parsh Eikev, stories and news

Please add Rabbi Rachamim ben Charlotte Jaqueline and Rabbi Shalom ben Tafucha Malka for a speedy healing.

Parsha Va’eschanan Part 2

Perhaps last week I should have spent more time on the cities of Refugee. What I really left out is the Shema and commentary. Yes, I wrote about this a lot in the past but I find as I age and my concentration on the Pasukim get weaker I mouth words so I am writing this for me as much as for you.

6:4 Hear, O Israel: the LORD our God, the LORD is one.

The Shema consists of the letters Shin Mem Ayin. Or the NAME and the other 70 NAMES. We should think of combining these while reciting the Shema and saving the Ayin and the Dalet from Echad to make witness. HASHEM ELOKAYNU HASHEM – L-RD of Avraham, G-D of Yitzchak, L-RD of Yacov. HASHEM shows quality of mercy like the furnace of Avraham and Lavan or Esav with Yacov but ELOKAYNU shows judgement as with the Akedah. The Dalet can stand for both physical and spiritual things. Directions – north, east, south and west. Ancient Elements or modern forms of matter – air or gas, fire or plasma, earth or solids and water or liquids. Then there are the four forms of life: inanimate, plant, animal and talking. Then the heavenly realm: Sun, moon, planets and stars. (some think earth and planets and modern thoughts go to sun, star clusters, galaxy and universe) The four forms of soul: Nefesh, Ruach, Neshama and G-dly soul. Four forms of Angels Seraphim, Ophanim, Chayos and Arch Angels. Maybe print this out and every time you say the Shema gaze at this.

5 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

Whole heartedly, even if HE takes your soul as in the Inquisition and all your wealth.

6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be upon thy heart;

At all times.

7 and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sit in thy house, and when thou walk by the way, and when thou lie down, and when thou rise up.

Not only should these words be by you but with your children everywhere you go.

8 And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thy hand, and they shall be for frontlets between thine eyes.

They shall be in the Tephillin that one wears daily.

9 And thou shalt write them upon the door-posts of thy house, and upon thy gates.

These are the guards you have on your house.

10 And it shall be, when the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the land which He swore unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee--great and goodly cities, which thou didst not build, 11 and houses full of all good things, which thou didst not fill, and cisterns hewn out, which thou didst not hew, viRneyards and olive-trees, which thou didst not plant, and thou shalt eat and be satisfied--

I was told by the late Tzaddik Rabbi Tuvia Wein (HaYayin HaTov) that when he and his family were relocated from Europe to Ramla, they lived in an old Arab House with a grape vine that yielded 1000 kilograms of grapes for wine and selling.

12 then beware lest thou forget the LORD, who brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 13 Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God; and Him shalt thou serve, and by His name shalt thou swear.

Rabbis tell people to refrain from swearing and only if required by Beis Din by Halacha.

14 Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the peoples that are round about you; 15 for a jealous God, even the LORD thy God, is in the midst of thee; lest the anger of the LORD thy God be kindled against thee, and He destroy thee from off the face of the earth. 16 Ye shall not try the LORD your God, as ye tried Him in Massah. 17 Ye shall diligently keep the commandments of the LORD your God, and His testimonies, and His statutes, which He hath commanded thee.

Nothing more is required of you but to diligently follow the commandments to your best.

18 And thou shalt do that which is right and good in the sight of the LORD; that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest go in and possess the good land which the LORD swore unto thy fathers,

We might not know precisely all the intensions in the prayers and Mitzvos but we should always try our best with righteous intensions.

19 to thrust out all thine enemies from before thee, as the LORD hath spoken. 20 When thy son askes thee in time to come, saying: 'What mean the testimonies, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which the LORD our God hath commanded you? 21 then thou shalt say unto thy son: 'We were Pharaoh's bondmen in Egypt; and the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. 22 And the LORD showed signs and wonders, great and sore, upon Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his house, before our eyes. 23 And He brought us out from thence, that He might bring us in, to give us the land which He swore unto our fathers. 24 And the LORD commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our good always, that He might preserve us alive, as it is at this day. 25 And it shall be righteousness unto us, if we observe to do all this commandment before the LORD our God, as He hath commanded us.'

We must observe the commandments doing our best and perhaps even pushing the envelop beyond our normal ability.

7:1 When the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and shall cast out many nations before thee, the Hittite, and the Girgashite, and the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite, seven nations greater and mightier than thou;

Avraham was promised ten nations here we have seven. Either three were assimilated or they are for the future.

2 and when the LORD thy God shall deliver them up before thee, and thou shalt smite them; then thou shalt utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor show mercy unto them; 3 neither shalt thou make marriages with them: thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son. 4 For he will turn away thy son from following Me, that they may serve other gods; so will the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and He will destroy thee quickly. 5 But thus shall ye deal with them: ye shall break down their altars, and dash in pieces their pillars, and hew down their Asherim, and burn their graven images with fire.

There shall be no intermarriage with the 7 nations (or for that matter any non-Jew or Ger Tzedek). The Kabbalah speaks about a person who has relations with a non-Jew and not in a very positive light neither in this world or the next.

6 For thou art a holy people unto the LORD thy God: the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be His own treasure, out of all peoples that are upon the face of the earth.

Treasured people = Am Segula.

7 The LORD did not set His love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people--for ye were the fewest of all peoples-- 8 but because the LORD loved you, and because He would keep the oath which He swore unto your fathers, hath the LORD brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

Am Segula should keep their part of the bargain  = Mitzvos as a show of faith.

9 Know therefore that the LORD thy God, He is God; the faithful God, who keeps covenant and mercy with them that love Him and keep His commandments to a thousand generations; 10 and repays them that hate Him to their face, to destroy them; He will not be slack to him that hates Him, He will repay him to his face. 11 Thou shalt therefore keep the commandment, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which I command thee this day, to do them.

So observe with all your heart, soul and might.

Parsha Eikev

Our Parsha closes with the second part of the Kiras Shema.

7:12 And it shall come to pass, because ye hearken to these ordinances, and keep, and do them, that the LORD thy God shall keep with thee the covenant and the mercy which He swore unto thy fathers, 13 and He will love thee, and bless thee, and multiply thee; He will also bless the fruit of thy body and the fruit of thy land, thy corn and thy wine and thine oil, the increase of thy kine and the young of thy flock, in the land which He swore unto thy fathers to give thee.

Similar to Bechukosai. If you love G-D and do the commandments you and your income is blessed and you will reap rewards.

14 Thou shalt be blessed above all peoples; there shall not be male or female barren among you, or among your cattle.

Knowing a woman who had 11 misaborts, this is a great blessing.

15 And the LORD will take away from thee all sickness; and He will put none of the evil diseases of Egypt, which thou know, upon thee, but will lay them upon all them that hate thee.

You know what a blessing this is not even to get an ingrown toe or fingernail.

16 And thou shalt consume all the peoples that the LORD thy God shall deliver unto thee; thine eye shall not pity them; neither shalt thou serve their gods; for that will be a snare unto thee.

Being worried about Palestinian Rights etc. will undermine you and consume you.

17 If thou shalt say in thy heart: 'These nations are more than I; how can I dispossess them?' 18 thou shalt not be afraid of them; thou shalt well remember what the LORD thy God did unto Pharaoh, and unto all Egypt: 19 the great trials which thine eyes saw, and the signs, and the wonders, and the mighty hand, and the outstretched arm, whereby the LORD thy God brought thee out; so shall the LORD thy God do unto all the peoples of whom thou art afraid.

“Do not be afraid Yisrael for you are a lion’s whelp”. Beresheis 49:9

20 Moreover the LORD thy God will send the hornet among them, until they that are left, and they that hide themselves, perish from before thee.

They will be driven out of Eretz Yisrael by the inanimate, plants and animals if you observe the Mitzvos.

21 Thou shalt not be affrighted at them; for the LORD thy God is in the midst of thee, a God great and awful.

G-D is your King, Helper, Savior and Shield.

22 And the LORD thy God will cast out those nations before thee by little and little; thou mayest not consume them quickly, lest the beasts of the field increase upon thee.

They will be cast out slowly so that the animals will not over run the land as we saw the boars do to Haifa in Covid and beyond.

23 But the LORD thy God shall deliver them up before thee, and shall discomfit them with a great discomfiture, until they be destroyed. 24 And He shall deliver their kings into thy hand, and thou shalt make their name to perish from under heaven; there shall no man be able to stand against thee, until thou have destroyed them.

Observe the Mitzvos and their hearts will melt before you.

25 The graven images of their gods shall ye burn with fire; thou shalt not covet the silver or the gold that is on them, nor take it unto thee, lest thou be snared therein; for it is an abomination to the LORD thy God.

The latest Goyishe Idol Worship is not only the famous doubt in one’s heart caused by Amalek mentioned by Rabbi Pinchas Winston Shlita this week. It is the exposure of a woman’s thigh or cleavage in the styles, WOKE philosophy, Everybody’s lives matter but that of the Jew, LGBT and a whole slew of tattooed nonsense that goes against our Torah Values.

26 And thou shalt not bring an abomination into thy house, and be accursed like unto it; thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is a devoted thing.

While on the Pshat scale we are talking about real idols, on the Remez, Drasha and Sod level it is what I just wrote about bringing into your house.

8:1 All the commandment which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do, that ye may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD swore unto your fathers. 2 And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God hath led thee these forty years in the wilderness, that He might afflict thee, to prove thee, to know what was in thy heart, whether thou would keep His commandments, or no. 3 And He afflicted thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knew not, neither did thy fathers know; that He might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.

You asked for bread, you got Mann. You asked for meat you got quail. Just observe and have faith.

4 Thy raiment waxed not old upon thee, neither did thy foot swell, these forty years.

How many of you have garments 40 years old that did not become worn or you walked for 40years without once having foot pain?

5 And thou shalt consider in thy heart, that, as a man chastens his son, so the LORD thy God chastens thee. 6 And thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, to walk in His ways, and to fear Him.

HELL is a spiritual washing machine. It is a father cleaning, washing and wringing out one’s soul and the same in the physical world if you are punished it is minus HELL.

7 For the LORD thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths, springing forth in valleys and hills;

Most of the brooks and fountains are in Yehuda and Shomron.

8 a land of wheat and barley, and vines and fig-trees and pomegranates; a land of olive-trees and honey; 9 a land wherein thou shalt eat bread without scarceness, thou shalt not lack any thing in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest dig brass.

These are the seven species. Honey is the sweetness of dates.

10 And thou shalt eat and be satisfied, and bless the LORD thy God for the good land which He hath given thee.

You will want nothing for your crops will suffice the food for you.

11 Beware lest thou forget the LORD thy God, in not keeping His commandments, and His ordinances, and His statutes, which I command thee this day; 12 lest when thou hast eaten and art satisfied, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein; 13 and when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied; 14 then thy heart be lifted up, and thou forget the LORD thy God, who brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage; 15 who led thee through the great and dreadful wilderness, wherein were serpents, fiery serpents, and scorpions, and thirsty ground where was no water; who brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint; 16 who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not, that He might afflict thee, and that He might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end; 17 and thou say in thy heart: 'My power and the might of my hand hath gotten me this wealth.'

When things are going abundantly we must remember to say Baruch HASHEM and bless HIS NAME. Lest we begin to think it is our strength and cunning brought us to be rich and will of goodness.

18 But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God, for it is He that giveth thee power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore unto thy fathers, as it is this day.

Never forget that there is nothing beside HIM.

19 And it shall be, if thou shalt forget the LORD thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I forewarn you this day that ye shall surely perish. 20 As the nations that the LORD makes to perish before you, so shall ye perish; because ye would not hearken unto the voice of the LORD your God.

It will be a vicious cycle or poor to rich believers and riches to paupers of disbelievers.

9:1  Hear, O Israel: thou art to pass over the Jordan this day, to go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than thyself, cities great and fortified up to heaven, 2 a people great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom thou know, and of whom thou hast heard say: 'Who can stand before the sons of Anak?' 3 Know therefore this day, that the LORD thy God is He who goes over before thee as a devouring fire; He will destroy them, and He will bring them down before thee; so shalt thou drive them out, and make them to perish quickly, as the LORD hath spoken unto thee.

G-D is with you so these giant folks and their armies will be defeat by the help of G-D.

4 Speak not thou in thy heart, after that the LORD thy God hath thrust them out from before thee, saying: 'For my righteousness the LORD hath brought me in to possess this land'; whereas for the wickedness of these nations the LORD doth drive them out from before thee. 5 Not for thy righteousness, or for the uprightness of thy heart, dost thou go in to possess their land; but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee, and that He may establish the word which the LORD swore unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

It is not because of you but in spite of them.

6 Know therefore that it is not for thy righteousness that the LORD thy God giveth thee this good land to possess it; for thou art a stiffnecked people. 7 Remember, forget thou not, how thou didst make the LORD thy God wroth in the wilderness; from the day that thou didst go forth out of the land of Egypt, until ye came unto this place, ye have been rebellious against the LORD. 8 Also in Horeb ye made the LORD wroth, and the LORD was angered with you to have destroyed you. 9 When I was gone up into the mount to receive the tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant which the LORD made with you, then I abode in the mount forty days and forty nights; I did neither eat bread nor drink water. 10 And the LORD delivered unto me the two tables of stone written with the finger of God; and on them was written according to all the words, which the LORD spoke with you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly. … 17 And I took hold of the two tables, and cast them out of my two hands, and broke them before your eyes. 18 And I fell down before the LORD, as at the first, forty days and forty nights; I did neither eat bread nor drink water; because of all your sin which ye sinned, in doing that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke Him. 19 For I was in dread of the anger and hot displeasure, wherewith the LORD was wroth against you to destroy you. But the LORD hearkened unto me that time also. 20 Moreover the LORD was very angry with Aaron to have destroyed him; and I prayed for Aaron also the same time. 21 And I took your sin, the calf which ye had made, and burnt it with fire, and beat it in pieces, grinding it very small, until it was as fine as dust; and I cast the dust thereof into the brook that descended out of the mount.—

It was not enough to refrain from the Egel HaZahav but one should have opposed it like Pinchas when he arose against Zimri. But everybody was a coward.

22 And at Taberah, and at Massah, and at Kibroth-hattaavah, ye made the LORD wroth. 23 And when the LORD sent you from Kadesh-Barnea, saying: 'Go up and possess the land which I have given you'; then ye rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God, and ye believed Him not, nor hearkened to His voice. 24 Ye have been rebellious against the LORD from the day that I knew you.-- 25 So I fell down before the LORD the forty days and forty nights that I fell down; because the LORD had said He would destroy you. 26 And I prayed unto the LORD, and said: 'O Lord GOD, destroy not Thy people and Thine inheritance, that Thou hast redeemed through Thy greatness, that Thou hast brought forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand.

All the time forgetting WHO took you out of Egypt. WHO man you rich and WHO preserves you unto this day. (Like the Simchas Torah Song "Le Chai Olamim”).

27 Remember Thy servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; look not unto the stubbornness of this people, nor to their wickedness, nor to their sin; 28 lest the land whence Thou brought us out say: Because the LORD was not able to bring them into the land which He promised unto them, and because He hated them, He hath brought them out to slay them in the wilderness. 29 Yet they are Thy people and Thine inheritance, that Thou didst bring out by Thy great power and by Thy outstretched arm.'

Therefore, G-D remembered your forefathers and HIS Promise and kept you alive.

10:1 At that time the LORD said unto me: 'Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first, and come up unto Me into the mount; and make thee an ark of wood. 2 And I will write on the tables the words that were on the first tables which thou didst break, and thou shalt put them in the ark.' 3 So I made an ark of acacia-wood, and hewed two tables of stone like unto the first, and went up into the mount, having the two tables in my hand. 4 And He wrote on the tables according to the first writing, the ten words, which the LORD spoke unto you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly; and the LORD gave them unto me.

I put both the original pieces and the ones I hewed into the Ark. How could Moshe, the humblest man, take credit for making the Teva that essentially Betzalel made? Rather he was the team leader for putting together the Mishkan and the team leader accepts credit or failure for the team.

5 And I turned and came down from the mount, and put the tables in the ark which I had made; and there they are, as the LORD commanded me.-- 6 And the children of Israel journeyed from Beeroth-benejaakan to Moserah; there Aaron died, and there he was buried; and Eleazar his son ministered in the priest's office in his stead.

7 From thence they journeyed unto Gudgod; and from Gudgod to Jotbah, a land of brooks of water.-- 8 At that time the LORD separated the tribe of Levi, to bear the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to stand before the LORD to minister unto Him, and to bless in His name, unto this day. 9 Wherefore Levi hath no portion nor inheritance with his brethren; the LORD is his inheritance, according as the LORD thy God spoke unto him.

Still in the midst of the first Drasha and is now explaining other details of Levi being given no portion in the land and his staying twice on the mount for 40days and nights.

10 Now I stayed in the mount, as at the first time, forty days and forty nights; and the LORD hearkened unto me that time also; the LORD would not destroy thee. 11 And the LORD said unto me: 'Arise, go before the people, causing them to set forward, that they may go in and possess the land, which I swore unto their fathers to give unto them.' 12 And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all His ways, and to love Him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul; 13 to keep for thy good the commandments of the LORD, and His statutes, which I command thee this day?

Again all that G-D requires from you is to keep the Mitzvos and observe them with love and whole heartedly.

14 Behold, unto the LORD thy God belongs the heaven, and the heaven of heavens, the earth, with all that therein is. 15 Only the LORD had a delight in thy fathers to love them, and He chose their seed after them, even you, above all peoples, as it is this day. 16 Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiffnecked. 17 For the LORD your God, He is God of gods, and Lord of lords, the great God, the mighty, and the awful, who regards not persons, nor taketh reward.

G-D cannot be bribed.

18 He doth execute justice for the fatherless and widow, and loveth the stranger, in giving him food and raiment.

The orphan, widow and stranger shall you add compassion for.

19 Love ye therefore the stranger; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.

The reason why we treat the stranger well is that we were strangers in Egyptr.

20 Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God; Him shalt thou serve; and to Him shalt thou cleave, and by His name shalt thou swear. 21 He is thy glory, and He is thy God, that hath done for thee these great and tremendous things, which thine eyes have seen. 22 Thy fathers went down into Egypt with threescore and ten persons; and now the LORD thy God hath made thee as the stars of heaven for multitude.

You are millions of people like the stars.

11:1 Therefore thou shalt love the LORD thy God, and keep His charge, and His statutes, and His ordinances, and His commandments, always. 2 And know ye this day; for I speak not with your children that have not known, and that have not seen the chastisement of the LORD your God, His greatness, His mighty hand, and His outstretched arm, 3 and His signs, and His works, which He did in the midst of Egypt unto Pharaoh the king of Egypt, and unto all his land; 4 and what He did unto the army of Egypt, unto their horses, and to their chariots; how He made the water of the Red Sea to overflow them as they pursued after you, and how the LORD hath destroyed them unto this day; 5 and what He did unto you in the wilderness, until ye came unto this place; 6 and what He did unto Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, the son of Reuben; how the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their households, and their tents, and every living substance that followed them, in the midst of all Israel; 7 but your eyes have seen all the great work of the LORD which He did. … 13 And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto My commandments which I command you this day, to love the LORD your God, and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul, 14 that I will give the rain of your land in its season, the former rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil.

If you serve HASHEM properly, you will get early rains after 7th of Mar Cheshvan, and later after Pesach.

15 And I will give grass in thy fields for thy cattle, and thou shalt eat and be satisfied.

Both you and your animals will eat and be satisfied.

16 Take heed to yourselves, lest your heart be deceived, and ye turn aside, and serve other gods, and worship them; 17 and the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and He shut up the heaven, so that there shall be no rain, and the ground shall not yield her fruit; and ye perish quickly from off the good land which the LORD giveth you.

Behave.

18 Therefore shall ye lay up these My words in your heart and in your soul; and ye shall bind them for a sign upon your hand, and they shall be for frontlets between your eyes.

You should wear Tephillin.

… 22 For if ye shall diligently keep all this commandment which I command you, to do it, to love the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways, and to cleave unto Him, 23 then will the LORD drive out all these nations from before you, and ye shall dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourselves.

Gradually they will leave the land.

24 Every place whereon the sole of your foot shall tread shall be yours: from the wilderness, and Lebanon, from the river, the river Euphrates, even unto the hinder sea shall be your border.

This includes the land on the other side of the Jordan.

25 There shall no man be able to stand against you: the LORD your God shall lay the fear of you and the dread of you upon all the land that ye shall tread upon, as He hath spoken unto you.

Eventually your land will reach the Euphrates but not quite yet.

Consequences for our actions

Denise was one of the movers in the ladies Tehillim on Shabbos group. As I wrote last week, their Tehillim for her, kept her alive for another year.

A number of years ago, a man who had a good job was offered a pension with good compensation and took the package. He had a wife about his age aka 50+ and an only child. He decided now that he was free of work to divorce the wife and become a beach bum. Although at 50+ and pretty bald, he was in reasonably physical shape to try to get some women 35-45+ at the beach.

At first the Yetzer went very well with him. He played the field here and there. Then one day he got a stroke. Who came to visit him – his playmate? Not quite only his son and the abandoned wife. On that scale he was a bit more humble and repented.

Another  story of Mr. Z. who had a very nice paying job. He liked running and ran here and ran there. In fact, he ran sofar he decided to run away from his short and stubby wife. He ran to a different city ran away from Shabbos Observance and Synagogue. About a year or more ago, he ran and contacted friends and asked them to pray for him as he has The Disease.

There is another story sad but true of a man who broke up two families and married the woman. He developed an incurables disease.

We have learned in Perkei Avos a number of sayings that look at these three things or those three things and you will not come to sin. I can tell you look at these stories and put brain in gear.

This does not mean that if one made a mistake and is fighting with his first wife not to divorce and make a second go at it from his mistake correct it within a Torah frame. Just keep brain in gear and Yetzer out of decision. Also be prepared to be a one sided parent and pray on the graves of Tzaddikim for a good Shidduch and if need to be a good parent to your children and perhaps his/her or joint.

Six-year-old Holocaust Heroine. By Menucha Chana Levin

https://aish.com/the-six-year-old-holocaust-heroine-from-ukraine/

Located about 37 miles east of Lviv, Zolochiv was once a thriving Ukrainian town. With the outbreak of World War II in 1939, large numbers of Polish Jewish refugees fled to Zolochiv, which was occupied by the Soviets. Before the Soviets retreated in 1941, Stalin’s secret police murdered several hundred Ukrainian nationalists, together with some Jewish and Polish civilians, and buried the bodies in mass graves.

When the Nazis occupied Zolochiv in July 1941, Yaroslava Levytska was a six-year-old Ukrainian girl.

My family was very poor. My grandfather Oleksandr Levytsky worked as a carpenter building churches around Zolochiv. He was a devout Greek Catholic.”

As soon as the Nazis introduced anti-Jewish laws, Oleksandr Levytsky began supplying his endangered Jewish friends in the ghetto with food and medicine. He wouldn’t have been able to do so without the help of his young courageous granddaughter, Yaroslava, who acted as his courier without awakening the suspicions of the Ukrainian guards.

For three difficult years, this brave little girl helped her grandfather and mother carry food to Jews inside the ghetto. Wearing a backpack with food hidden under school notebooks, Yaroslava slid in through a gap in a barbed wire fence. Later, when the gap was closed, she boldly entered through the gate when guards were not paying attention.

Of course it was scary, but the Germans never hit non-Jewish children,” recalls Yaroslava in an interview with Israeli journalist and historian Shimon Briman. But one time a German hit my mother and didn’t let her bring food into a Jewish house with a red Jewish star painted on it.

We lived together with Jewish people on the same street. My father had gone to school with them. All the children loved each other, and we grew up together. We decided to help them because we were all neighbors and never even thought about their being Jewish; their nationality didn’t matter to us. Mama dressed us identically. My sister and I had little coats, and when our neighbor, Basia, a Jewish girl, outgrew her clothing we gave her a coat. When misfortune happened, we helped with whatever we had, in our souls, in our hearts; they were people, our neighbors.”

The Nazis blamed the Jews for the murders committed by Stalin’s secret police. Ukrainian mobs, supported by the German authorities, went on a rampage and killed about 3000 Jews during this pogrom.

During the pogrom of July 1941, Mama didn’t let us go outside,” Yaroslava remembers. “We were told there would be a crackdown on the Jews. We took this to mean it would also happen to us. That they would be the first, and we would be next. When we saw Basia being taken away to be shot, we screamed and cried. ‘They have taken away our Basia!’ We were so sad Mama could not bear it and covered the window with a bedspread so we wouldn’t see the horrifying sight.”

Yaroslava believes it was her faith that enabled her family to hide Jews in their home, smuggle food into the ghetto and help Jewish refugees.

It was our faith that motivated me and my mother and also concern for our neighbors. In April 1943, truck after truck drove into the forest where mass shootings of Jews took place. A truck with submachine gunners arrived from Lviv and the Ukrainian police took part. Neighbors said the Jews were buried in mass graves where the earth continued to move for many days.

Another terrible incident took place before my very eyes. I was walking home with two neighbor girls. We saw a truck going up a hill and a Jewish woman jumped out and began running toward us. Then a Ukrainian policeman inside the truck jumped out and also ran toward us. But the poor woman had nowhere to run. The nearest building was closed and in the other direction was barbed wire. The policeman raced after her, asking us why we were walking there. ‘Because of the lousy Jewess I might have shot a child!’ he shouted.

But he did shoot the woman. We came up to her and saw blood pouring out of her head. She was a beautiful woman, wearing a light-brown jacket. When we came home, our neighbor wrung her hands and said, ‘That was the wife of our friend, the doctor from Sasiv!’

Another time I saw two boys being shot. They were lying next to each other, and their father alongside them. Maybe policemen had shot them.”

A Jewish boy named Abram Shapiro ended up in the camp near Zolochiv. He got out and came to our neighbor’s house. She said to him: ‘I am begging you. I have one child. If I am caught because of you, they will kill you, me, and my child.’ So he crossed the road and went to our house.

Mama came and told us: ‘A boy with red hair came at four o’clock in the morning. If I am caught with him, know that if I don’t come back, they have shot both me and him.’

We were aware of the danger but there was no question. Mama knew how to enter the ghetto unnoticed and took Abram there, telling him to say he came from the Levytskas. My grandmother made potato pancakes for him during the day which he ate cold at night. He would bring food into the ghetto like a courier. We traveled by train to our friends, taking butter and other foods. We didn’t have money, but the Jews gave us clothing which we traded for food and helped them.

The bunker where a group of Jews were hiding could be accessed only through the sewer system, but my grandfather went there. He found a boy named Yurko Shenker crying that he didn’t want to stay in the bunker. We fed Yurko who stayed with us for a few days, disguised as a girl in a dress and kerchief. So Yurko and my sister and I were walking along when suddenly a neighbor came to bring us milk. Then my father pushed Yurko with all his might to hide under the bed. We were very scared. During the night a Ukrainian policeman and my grandfather took Yurko on horseback to Pidhirtsi, and that’s how they saved him. I still have a photograph of Yurko.

In the winter, a group of Jews was brought from the ghetto to clear the snow from the road next to our house. Several of our neighbors were watching them. My father said to my mother: Make lunch, and I’ll go to the German and ask him to bring them all for lunch, so that they are not taken back to the city. The German replied: ‘I’m handing them over to you, but if even one escapes, then none of you will remain alive.’ My mother boiled a whole pail of potatoes, and my father brought bread from the bread factory. They ate, then worked until evening, and then they were brought back to the ghetto.

When the Red Army came in 1944, the Jews left the bunker, and afterwards many went to America. When the war ended the neighbors laughed at us, saying that we had rescued Jews but still remained poor with only our old house. They thought that way because others had robbed Jews of their valuables. In Pidhirtsi, people came and killed all the Jews for their gold. One little girl hidden under a bed was the only survivor. Later some Jews came and beat the Ukrainians for betraying the Jews they promised to hide for money. The grain storehouse in Zolochiv was built with the red bricks of a ruined synagogue. When the Jewish cemetery was destroyed, Jewish names were erased from some headstones which were placed next to the church with new names.

The Russians sent my grandfather and grandmother to Siberia but later released them. After the war, the Muscovites beat my father and shouted at him, ‘You Banderite!’ (Ukrainian nationalist).”

According to Yad Vashem, by the time of the liberation in the summer of 1944, only 90 Jews, one percent of the prewar population of nine thousand Jews in Zolochiv, had survived by hiding in bunkers, sewer systems, and pits in the forest. A third of those survivors were saved by three generations of the Levytsky family: the grandfather Oleksandr, his daughter Kateryna, and young granddaughter, Yaroslava.

Abram Shapiro was saved and after the war he joined his brother who was living in Haifa.

In 1989 Abram invited me to come to Israel to receive the title of Righteous of the Nations and a medal from Yad Vashem,” recalls Yaroslava. “He drove me around the country in his car. He thanked our family very much. Abram and I communicated in the Ukrainian language. He understood and knew everything. While I was in Israel, people asked me about the economic situation back in Ukraine which was very difficult, especially as my parents had just died.”

Yaroslava started to find out about state programs that help righteous heroes relocate to Israel. In 1995, in appreciation for her bravery during the Holocaust, Israel granted Yaroslava full Israeli citizenship, a pension, and an apartment in Haifa.

She had lived for many years under a communist regime that suppressed religion. “Now I live in Haifa, a city of three religions, Judaism, Islam, and Christianity, and I go to a church with a priest who prays in Ukrainian, and no one bothers us,” she points out. She receives visits and medical assistance from an Israeli charity called Atzum, which has a project dedicated to helping the righteous.

I feel extremely fortunate for the fact I live in Israel,” says Yaroslava. “I don’t have the words to express it.”

That was two years ago, before the latest war started raging in Ukraine, shattering the lives of millions across the country and the fighting still continues. One month ago, on June 17, 2022, the Russians shelled Zolochiv with cluster munitions, injuring an eighty-two-year-old woman who might have been a childhood friend of Yaroslava.

In Haifa’s Garden of the Righteous there are 18 memorial stones bearing the names of those who risked their lives to save Jews during the Holocaust. Yaroslava Levytska is the only person to be honored with this commemorative marker during her lifetime.

Dying mother and premature baby story by Nesli

Last week, Nesli’s father was killed by an Arab Driver who stole a vehicle and drove in the wrong direction on the highway. From her one in a million stories.

It was either a traffic accident or some sort of poisoning in pregnancy but the women in the last trimester of pregnancy was in danger of dying.

The paramedic was called and had a few choices before him: 1) Try to save the baby, 2) risk losing the baby and possibly saving the mother or 3) go as fast as he could to the hospital and try to save both if that was humanly possible.

There was another hurdle and that was the hospital was about 20 minutes away and he did not know if there was enough time for option three.

During the drive, the birth process started and the medic had only one choice to see if the natural birth process would go through.

Although the story was told on TV for 20 plus minutes to half an hour and the reasons why it was miraculous, the baby was born and the mother got to the hospital in time to be saved. If there is a rerun I must write down details and retell the story.

I also have more details of the story of the two pilots and plan to retell it as there was an injured navigator involved too behind enemy lines.
