Rosh Hashanah Special
I am not going into
the prayers about the world’s creation or the day of judgement. I may go into
Teshuva=Repentance, Tephillah=Prayer and Tzeduka=Charity. When I start writing
Mussar or a Drasha, I have no idea what I am going to write. I pray and hope
that HASHEM puts the proper thoughts, ideas and then words and paragraphs that
will inspire the reader and inflame the prayers. Years ago, I heard Rabbi
Simcha HaCohain Kuk Ztzal say that “when I speak Mussar, I am talking to myself
to improve my own faults. I cannot tell each individual how to repair each and
every flaw. I only hope that by talking/writing to myself with my own
imperfection that somebody else might be inspired.”
There is a short story
by Goethe called “The Attorney” which starts out with a shipping magnet. He is
making a lot of money and accumulating wealth through his exports and imports.
One day he goes to pray and after prayers there is a fair. He goes and watches
the fair. He sees children and parents enjoying the fair. He is a 50year old
man. He is not young but neither is he elderly. Then he wakes up to the fact
that he is missing out something in life called a family. This we call in the
Torah Cheshbon or accounting of our deeds/goals in life.
I think the best audit
one can do is a self-audit. Loved ones can do it, but it puts a stress on the
relationships. It is far better for one to do his Cheshbon in this world, alive
than after 120years by the Beit Din Shel Maalah (heavenly court).
Goethe’s story
continues and like the Yetzer HaRa, the sailing merchant cannot be content with
his new wife and his riches. He has a desire to once more go to the port of
Alexandria and do business. He then leaves his young wife and goes on another
shipping adventure. This is our problem to cease and desist from our sins.
Sometimes it cannot be immediate but gradually. When I became a Baal Teshuva, I
could immediately observe Kashrus for once one fills his stomach whether with
Kosher or Trafe, the desire to eat is satisfied. However, becoming Shomer
Shabbos was a whole different ball game. I could give up writing term papers on
Shabbos and even traveling and not going to the beach and some things I did not
know about turning on and off lights and it took a much longer time to become
observant. There are some sins that are also hard to stop because of bad habits
and it takes time to wean them out but do not give up after a failure or two as
eventually one can succeed.
When we self-audit our
sins, according to the Rambam and Gemara Kiddushin 39A-B we should view
ourselves has half-innocent/half-guilty on the life death scales. If we do one
more Mitzvah, we turn the scales in our favor for life. If we do one more sin
the opposite. The same view the Rambam applies to the whole world our one
Mitzvah can throw the balance in life for Am Yisrael or a sin a bad Gezaira.
There are three types
of people in this world. The Rasha = a very wicked person it could be a Mafia
Type or one who tries to collect for a sick person needing an operation and
making a bundle out of it with little going to help the hapless person. Benoni
= an intermediate person with sins and Mitzvos. One should view himself as a
Benoni half and half. One more Mitzvah and he becomes righteous and can save a
bad judgement on the whole world if the world was half and half. There are
Tzadikim = fully righteous but way above my measly level. Some of our very
righteous also sin we find that with Dovid and Moshe unlike other religions
where their saints never sin. Ours are human and sin crouches at the door.
So, when you prepare
for Rosh Hashanah view yourself as a Benoni avoid your sins and put in an
effort for more Mitzvos. This is Teshuva or Repentance.
Prayer is even harder
for people like myself. My concentration on the words and meanings are not the
same level I was when I was in my 20’s. When I was in my 20’s the three
sections of the Mussaf Prayer were said with Kavanah. Malcuyos or Kingship of
our G-D, Zichronos or memorials-remembering and Shofaros or the blasting of the
Shofar. Each section contains three times three verses from the Torah, Writings
and Prophets with an added one from the Torah or ten verses. Sometimes I know I
am in one section and concentrate a bit other times my mind is somewhere
between the fire on Maui, Iranian Threat, Turkish or Moroccan Earthquake or a
political race. It is the difference in concentration of a 20year old vs. the
attention span of a 70plus year old.
When I was 20years
old, I could bend over humbly most of the Yom Kippur Prayer and beat my breast.
Now I am happy if my legs with water on one knee and varicose veins allow me to
stand for all the prayer. All I can do is try to concentrate as much as
possible on the words and their meanings and that is Pray or Tephillah.
The last part Tzeduka
or Charity is neither easy for the rich or the poor. The rich man may have
earned a lot and not given enough during the year or sinned and gave more than
20% of his income which the Rabbis forbade. The poor man might not even make
the minimum of 10% of his income including up to half for the education –
books, school costs, clubs for his children and the other half to charities.
Charity can be in many
forms that even a poor man can help. He can collect for one of the various
health organizations dealing with Cancer, Heart Disease, Alzheimer, Kidney ,
MS, MD, a hospital or collect for a machine for a hospital. Of course, the
Yeshivos, Kollelim, Talmud Torah, Beis Yacov, Mikvahs, poor Brides, Bus rides
for children, Soup Kitchens for the poor etc. These and helping the blind,
elderly, disabled, etc. is Tzeduka or Charity and these are the three types of
deeds we have to work on to avoid the evil decree.
Single
Unatonable Sin by Rabbi Yerachmiel Tilles
http://ascentofsafed.com/Stories/Stories/5783/1343-50.html
He was a
wealthy and respected, happily married man, whose world collapsed after his
wife gave birth to twins that were paralyzed from head to toe. They grew up
unable to speak, confined to wheelchairs, and needed to be fed, clothed,
cleaned, and changed. He couldn't take the suffering any longer and took to
drinking as an escape route.
His friends
brought the matter to the attention of Rabbi Yosef Netanyan, asking him to
intervene. R. Netanyan promptly went to visit HaRav Ben-Tzion
Abba-Shaul and told him the man's story. The Rav immediately said, "Bring
him to me!"
Netanyan
went and told the man about the greatness of HaRav Ben Tzion, but he paid no
attention. He said, "What could he possibly do for me?"
"The
key to salvation is in his hands," Netanyan replied. "They heed his
words in Heaven!"
After much
persuasion he finally agreed. They went together to the Rav, who seemed to be
waiting for their arrival. The Rav sat the man to his left and Netanyan in
front of him. The Rav then turned to the man with affection and said,
"Tell me what the problem is."
Years of
suffering erupted in bitter tears. "I'm healthy, I have money, I have
everything. Yet, my life is miserable!" He exclaimed. He then explained to
the Rav about the two children and how he's unable to continue living and had
even thought about committing suicide.
He cried,
"Either the Rav performs a miracle that at least one of them will be
healed, or he pray for me that I die!" He then sobbed uncontrollably.
Netanyan
thought that HaRav Ben Tzion would comfort him, but to his surprise, the Rav's
great wisdom led him to rebuke the man harshly.
"You
should be ashamed of yourself! You should know that all sins can be atoned for,
except suicide. That sin completely removes one from Olam HaBa (the
next world [of everlasting life]).
"Do
you know why? Because this world is the world of tests, like a war zone. A
soldier is sent into battle. If he gives his life, fights fiercely, and wins,
he will receive recognition and a medal of honor, and will be promoted to a
higher rank. But if he is negligent and shows resentment, he will be condemned
and even punished. But for one act, there is absolutely no forgiveness,
desertion. Despair of life is like desertion!"
No one ever
spoke to him like that. He stopped crying and listened intently. HaRav Ben
Tzion then told him about an incident that happened in Izmir, Turkey, about
three hundred years ago.
* * *
Rabbi
Eliyahu HaKohen, the Shevet Mussar, was invited to a seudat
mitzvah, and when he arrived, the hosts' wife yelled at him to leave.
"What
injustice did you find in me?" he wondered.
"Nothing,
but it is forbidden for a Rasha (evil person) to look at the
face of a Tzadik (righteous person). I can't stand your Kedusha (holiness)!"
Perplexed,
Rabbi Eliyahu asked, "What makes you think that you are a Rasha?"
"Not
me," she answered, "rather the spirit possessing me."
When the
Rabbi heard this, he began speaking with the spirit, asking him why he received
this punishment.
The spirit
explained "I was born in Germany to a Torah-observant family. In my teens,
I connected with bad friends, and they enticed me to commit the most severe
sins. After a while I started to feel remorse and wanted to return to my
community.
"The
community didn't agree to take me back. Rather they denounced and expelled me.
The friends I left also mocked me for trying to go back. I wandered around
tormented. My soul had been beaten from all sides, it was too hard for me, and
I couldn't take it anymore. Then, one clear day, I committed suicide.
"My
soul ascended to heaven and there they didn't even agree to look at me, because
suicide had no atonement. They cast me back to this world to wander for
eternity, persecuted by ruthless Malachi Chabala (angels of destruction) full
of wrath."
Rabbi
Eliyahu HaKohen promised that he would pray and dedicate a certain amount of
his Torah study for him, and in that merit, he would be permitted to Gehinom (Purgatory), to
be cleansed.
Upon
hearing this, the spirit agreed to leave the woman.
* * *
After the
Rav finished telling the story the man murmured, "But poor guy, he
couldn't stand life anymore."
HaRav Ben
Tzion was determined, "There is a rule in Torah that says that no one can
receive a test that they are unable to withstand, just as a soldier isn't sent
into a lost battle. The Talmud (Ketubot 33b) brings proof for this by
telling us that Chananya, Mishael and Azariah sacrificed themselves and didn't
bow down to Nebuchadnezar's statue, thereby sanctifying G-d's name in public.
"The
Talmud then reveals that if they had been tortured they wouldn't have stood the
agony and would have bowed down to the statue (because it wasn't actual
idolatry, rather a monument in honor of the king, as the Tosafot commentary
explains there).
"How
did the Sages know that they wouldn't have withstood the torture? The answer is
that one doesn't receive a test one cannot withstand. They were tested by being
thrown into a fiery furnace and they endured it. If they could have withstood a
more difficult test such as torture, they would have been tested with that instead.
"Listen
carefully. That young man was tested with terrible depression and stress, and
he was required to withstand it. You are being tested from heaven with an
enormous test, but you're required to withstand it and therefore able to do so.
Don't desert the battle! Getting drunk is also a kind of desertion."
The man had
a gloomy look on his face. He asked, "But why? Why? Why were these souls
sent into the world if they're bound like cocoons? and why were we chosen to be
their parents?"
HaRav Ben
Tzion's face lit up. "You want to know why? You want to understand? Good!
Who these souls are I won't reveal to you. But why they chose you I will tell
you. In your previous gilgul (reincarnation) you..."
As the Rav
began speaking, the man became pale. Rabbi Netanyan felt that the matter was
personal, a secret from the world of souls. He called to the Rav and said
"Kevod HaRav, maybe I should step out?"
The man
stared at me. HaRav Ben Tzion muttered, " That's it. That's enough!"
"No!
Please HaRav, tell me," begged the man.
The Rav
replied, "It is from Heaven that we were interrupted. It is a sign that I
shouldn't continue. But know that everything is justified. Everything is
precisely measured. Everything is for the best.
"But
this I can say: this is the height of your suffering. You won't suffer from
health problems or from earning a living, and the rest of your children will be
healthy and will bring you utter satisfaction and joy!"
The father
left HaRav Ben Tzion's home invigorated, his face glowing and his soul
strengthened, and now able to accept the judgment of heaven wholeheartedly and
with joy. And indeed, they subsequently had healthy children and today are a
happy and joyous family.

The Mystical Power of the Shabbos Stew by Rabbi
Yerachmiel Tilles
http://ascentofsafed.com/Stories/Stories/5784/1344-01.html
The Tzemach Tzedek, the third Lubavitcher
Rebbe, made an association with a certain non-religious Jewish doctor. The
doctor attended several public discourses of the Rebbe and these piqued his
interest.
One week, the Rebbe invited the doctor to spend Shabbos with
him. At the afternoon meal, steaming plates of cholent (a traditional Shabbos
stew, served piping hot)[1] were put on the table. The doctor stared at his
plate, his face expressing bewilderment.
The Rebbe understood that the doctor was wondering how could
there be hot food on Shabbos, since cooking was not allowed. The Rebbe
explained that the cholent was prepared prior to Shabbos, and then left to
simmer the whole night. Upon hearing these words, the doctor pushed the plate
of food away, objecting that it was not healthy.
The Tzemach Tzedek responded, "Please reconsider. A person
that eats cholent brings blessing into the world."
The doctor responded, "Rabbi, didn't you tell us that the
blessings are drawn down into the world by our blowing shofar on
Rosh Hoshana?"
The Rebbe nodded his head in affirmation.
"So why then," continued the doctor cleverly, "do
we need to eat cholent on Shabbos?"
The Rabbi smiled and said, "It is true what you said about
shofar. But when Rosh Hoshana falls out on Shabbos [as this year 5784], we
don't blow the shofar; we eat cholent."

of the birth date (Elul 29) of the Tzemach Tzedek.
Biographic note:
Rabbi Menachem-Mendel Schneersohn [of blessed memory: 29
Elul 5549 - 13 Nissan 5626 (Sept. 1789 - April 1866)], the third Rebbe of
Chabad, was known as the Tzemach Tzedek, after his books of
responsa to difficult questions in Jewish Law and Talmudic commentary called by
that name. He was renowned not only as a Rebbe, but also as a leading scholar
in his generation in both the revealed and hidden aspects of Torah.
[1] The custom of eating cholent/chamim began
more than two millennia ago. A splinter cult of Jews, known as the Tzadukim,
or Sadducees, believed that rabbinical law was corrupt and that the Bible
should be interpreted literally. They interpreted the verse, "You shall
have no fire burning in your dwellings," to mean that one should sit in
the dark and eat cold food. In reality, the verse means that a fire may not be
lit on Shabbos. To demonstrate the falseness of their belief, the Rabbis
established lighting Shabbos candles to provide light during Shabbos and eating
hot food on Shabbos day from a heat source prepared before Shabbos. Thus, one
who eats cholent on Shabbos is considered to have upheld both the Written and
Oral Torah.
