Parsha Vayeishev Part 1, stories of war, miracles and more plus Israel Updates.

Parsha Vayeishev Part 1

Finally, after 36 years, Yacov is back with his father. He gives over the tending of the animals to his sons and spends time learning Torah with Yosef. But that doesn’t last too long. Rabbi Simcha HaCohain Kuk Ztzal used to point out that this week we do not find G-D in the Parsha. What is HE doing? He is busy making the Moshiach Ben Yosef and the Moshiach Ben Dovid.

37:1 And Jacob dwelt in the land of his father's sojournings, in the land of Canaan. 2 These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren, being still a lad even with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives; and Joseph brought evil report of them unto their father.

Yosef wanted the sons of the maid wives to be on the same level of the higher educated and pedigree sons of Leah and Rachel. They did not behave like a son of Yacov or Ben Yisrael should. The Halachos of Lashon HaRa would only be given at Sinai and instead of explaining their errors, he tattled-tale to his father. (It would only be centuries later that Dale Carnegie would come out with the book How to win friends and influence people.)

3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age; and he made him a coat of many colors. 4 And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.

This boy was spoiled by daddy because his mother died and he was her first born. So, he was singled out above all the others. He was probably and cocky and pompous 17year old.

5 And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it to his brethren; and they hated him yet the more.

He managed to make 4 enemies of his brothers from the maids and now Leah’s sons were jealous.

6 And he said unto them: 'Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed: 7 for, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves came round about, and bowed down to my sheaf.'

What this Chutzpadik kid is pompous and now dreams he can rule over us!

8 And his brethren said to him: 'Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us?' And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words. 9 And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it to his brethren, and said: 'Behold, I have dreamed yet a dream: and, behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars bowed down to me.'

Now even his parents would bow down unto him and this was going a bit too far.

10 And he told it to his father, and to his brethren; and his father rebuked him, and said unto him: 'What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down to thee to the earth?'

Meseches Brachos states that dreams, even prophetic have some element of nonsense in them. Sheaves bowing down or the fact that his mother, the moon was in the dream although she was buried years ago. His father understood prophecy quite well but had hushed up Yosef as he had see the reaction of the brothers and his rebuke, he hoped, would calm them down.

11 And his brethren envied him; but his father kept the saying in mind.

Every father wants his son to succeed even better than himself. The Steipler Rebbe was happy that Rav Chaim Kanievsky was better learned than he was and it brought him great joy to see his son’s success.

12 And his brethren went to feed their father's flock in Shechem. 13 And Israel said unto Joseph: 'Do not thy brethren feed the flock in Shechem? come, and I will send thee unto them.' And he said to him: 'Here am I.'

Yosef loved his father and learned a lot of Torah from him. He was happy to do his father a favor.

14 And he said to him: 'Go now, see whether it is well with thy brethren, and well with the flock; and bring me back word.' So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem. 15 And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field. And the man asked him, saying: 'What seek thou?' 16 And he said: 'I seek my brethren. Tell me, I pray thee, where they are feeding the flock.'

There is a Midrash that says the ‘man’ was the Satan in disguise to speed up the process. The Gezaira of 400 years of Gallus would soon start but the Satan wanted to make sure it started soon.

17 And the man said: 'They are departed hence; for I heard them say: Let us go to Dothan.' And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothan.

If he delayed going to Dothan, then perhaps the decree could be nullified.

18 And they saw him afar off, and before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him. 19 And they said one to another: 'Behold, this dreamer comes. 20 Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into one of the pits, and we will say: An evil beast hath devoured him; and we shall see what will become of his dreams.'

The evil beast of jealousy.

21 And Reuben heard it, and delivered him out of their hand; and said: 'Let us not take his life.' 22 And Reuben said unto them: 'Shed no blood; cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, but lay no hand upon him'--that he might deliver him out of their hand, to restore him to his father.

Shimon and Levi were very zealous and hot tempered. While zealousness of Levy was closer to Shem Shamayim (for the sake of heaven) most of the time, he was over influence by Shimon who did not have the same purity. Yosef was zealous over his brother’s behavior. Our Sages treated zealousness as a doubled edge sword for it could make one into a fanatic.

23 And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stripped Joseph of his coat, the coat of many colors that was on him; 24 and they took him, and cast him into the pit--and the pit was empty, there was no water in it.

The failure of Reuven’s leadership occurs at this point. He could have said enough to all and put Yosef in his place. Instead he does nothing to stop Shimon or Levi. Rashi says that there was no water in the pit but snakes and scorpions enjoyed the remaining moisture that might have still been there.

25 And they sat down to eat bread; and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a caravan of Ishmaelites came from Gilead, with their camels bearing spicery and balm and laudanum, going to carry it down to Egypt. 26 And Judah said unto his brethren: 'What profit is it if we slay our brother and conceal his blood?

Yehuda above Shimon and Levy shows leadership. This was a poor judgement on his part but leader! Leaders make decisions and stand by them both in Parsha Miketz an Vayigash. He takes responsibility right or wrong or even poor. He came up with a terrible concept but owned it. His reasoning was that he wants to save Yosef but Shimon and Levy being his elder brothers, he cannot go against them. He should have used his father's feelings as an argument.

27 Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother, our flesh.' And his brethren hearkened unto him.

It does not matter how Yosef would go down into Mitzrayim if it were a decree from HASHEM. He could have been captured by Ishmaelites. Instead the brothers were stained by this sale.

28 And there passed by Midianites, merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. And they brought Joseph into Egypt. 29 And Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he rent his clothes.

Reuven understands his misplaced judgement but all too late.

30 And he returned unto his brethren, and said: 'The child is not; and as for me, whither shall I go?'

I am the oldest and I should have ended the farce with Yosef immediately instead of my postponement. Now we all have to answer to father.

31 And they took Joseph's coat, and killed a he-goat, and dipped the coat in the blood; 32 and they sent the coat of many colors, and they brought it to their father; and said: 'This have we found. Know now whether it is thy son's coat or not.'

Mida Knegged Mida or measure for measure. Yacov is 108years old. But 45years ago, he deceived his father, Yitzchak, with a dead goat’s skin. Now his Karma-kickback was coming to haunt him with his children deceiving him through a goat.

33 And he knew it, and said: 'It is my son's coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt torn in pieces.'

The evil beast is none other than jealousy.

34 And Jacob rent his garments, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days.

Longer than a normal mourning as he did for Devorah, Rachel or Yitzchak.

35 And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said: 'Nay, but I will go down to the grave to my son mourning.' And his father wept for him.

Our Sages tell us that after twelve months, one misses the deceased less. Immediately after hearing of my own father’s death I felt like I wanted to join him. It will soon be 55years and I miss him but not at that level rather hope to see him after 120years with my long line of forefathers. However, Yosef was not dead and therefore Yacov was in a perpetual state of mourning.

36 And the Midianites sold him into Egypt unto Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh's, the captain of the guard.

We learn that the Ishmaelites were taking crude oil to Egypt and managed to make a small profit selling Yosef to Midianites who were carrying spices. Rashi-Medrash.

At this point I have an hour to an hour and a half prior to my own-deadline for talking to the family and last-minute preparations before Shabbos. I like to do a quality production and quantity is easier so I could brush this off. But the section on the making of the forefathers of Moshiach Ben Dovid and Moshiach ben Yosef deserve better wording.

38:1 And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah. 2 And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite whose name was Shua; and he took her, and went in unto her. 3 And she conceived, and bore a son; and he called his name Er. 4 And she conceived again, and bore a son; and she called his name Onan. 5 And she yet again bore a son, and called his name Shelah; and he was at Chezib, when she bore him. 6 And Judah took a wife for Er his first-born, and her name was Tamar. 7 And Er, Judah's first-born, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him. … 21 And he restored the chief butler back unto his butlership; and he gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand. 22 But he hanged the chief baker, as Joseph had interpreted to them. 23 Yet did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgot him.

Holy Activities in the war.

Last week Yitzchak passes away in the Sedra (often used instead of Parsha). One of the holiest tasks in the war is doing what my Nephew Does – reserve Major and Social Worker on the health of the Nefesh in Hebrew. He informs families of wounded and dead and his unit keeps giving them support. The letter I received below is holier and that is identifying remains and piecing burnt and decapitated bodies together.

The Chazan of the Great Synagogue in Tel Aviv, Tzvi Grinhaim is working with Chabad to give soldiers a BBQ in break periods from the battles. He also entertains them with spiritual songs so he is a cook and singer. And he served in the IDF.

Dear Friends,

I’m writing for the first time since the war started for you to read and share this vital message: https://blogs.timesofisrael.com/our-only-hope-the-bombshell-revelation-of-jericho-wall/.

As for me and my family: My son Yisrael was called up for reserve duty the second day of the war. He is stationed in the south, in a unit that deals with dead bodies. For the first weeks, he was cleaning up the south from dead terrorists, performing DNA testing on the remains of each body to clarify whether it was a Jew. Recently he has been working with the archeologists in Be’eri, the hardest hit kibbutz, sifting ashes to find miniscule remains that might through DNA testing tell an anguished family whether their missing loved one is dead or a prisoner in Gaza. My daughter Pliyah is working 11-hour days as administrator of Thank Israeli Soldiers https://thankisraelisoldiers.org/, an NGO that is sending truckloads of supplies to soldiers every day.

War Story in Hebrew Oct. 7th. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeT6XZHCatI

Rough translation of the story ten minutes of talk into a minute or two of reading.

A non-religious Lt. was with his non-religious fellow soldiers partying and listening to music until 4 in the morning. At six the phone rings and he rolls over and goes to sleep. At 6:15 there was a repeat at 6:30, his mother wakes him up. He picks up the phone to hear “we are at war, take your pistol and all the magazines of bullets you have and get to assemble.” Now anybody who gets a license for a pistol has only two magazines holding six to eight bullets at the most.

He gets to where he has to go and is given a rifle with a number of magazines and organizes with two others into a very small squad. They join with others. Golani and other units are fighting the terrorists and are being shot at with hundreds of bullets and RPG’s. Soldiers from the best trained units are falling to the left and the right of them.

With no planned or organized fighting units or supplies. It does not take long for them to run out of bullets. Suddenly the most non-observant friend of his says that if we get out of this alive, I am going to start observing Shabbos!

Slowly, they gather guns and bullets from dead terrorists and continue fighting. They survive and since then his friend began observing Shabbos and after a week or two, the Lt. started observing Shabbos.

The officer continues “Ayn Od Bilado = There is nothing without HIM”!

The following story especially the surprise ending you can below of not.

I believe and it is possible.

The Nazi’s Grandson from Bordeaux by Rabbi Yerachmiel Tilles

http://ascentofsafed.com/cgi-bin/ascent.cgi?Name=1356-13

Arriving early to shul one Friday night in 2016, I [Yaakov Cass] noticed a young man standing at the back of the shul quietly and demurely, looking a little bewildered and out of place. I walked up to him and asked him if he had a place to eat for Shabbos.

It turned out he spoke neither Hebrew nor English, but I managed to communicate with him in broken French. He said he would love to join us and so, after the prayers, we walked home together. He enjoyed very much the Friday night dinner and Shabbos lunch together with my family.

The guest, whom we will call David, did not tell us too much about himself. Still, it was sufficient to enable me to realize that he was a fairly new Baal teshuva (returnee to mitzvah observance) who had studied for a short while at the Lubavitcher yeshiva of Brunoir on the outskirts of Paris, but was unable to cope with its high level of learning. So, he came to Israel to study at the French speaking yeshiva in Ramot, where I live. He was older than all of the other boys and the only Lubavitcher.

We invited him a few times and told him he would always be welcome. Then he disappeared into the ether.

About a year later, one Friday night I was sitting in my place davening (praying) when somebody blocked my light and stood in front of me. I looked up. It was David. With a gigantic grin on his face and obviously in a really joyous and happy state of mind, he said, "Well, you said I could come whenever I want, so here I am."

We hugged, and back he came to eat with us again. This time we heard the whole long story of his life and how, amazingly, against all odds, he had become a Baal teshuva.

He told us he came from the town of Bordeaux in France. He had been studying at the university, and was one of the only two Jews in the whole institute. His grandfather had been an officer in the Nazi (yemach shemam) army (!!) and had escaped justice by running away to South America.

The officer's son, David's father, moved to France to seek his fortune. He remained a rabid anti-Semite throughout his life. After a lightning courtship, he married David's mother, a Jewess, but after she gave birth he disappeared, never to be seen again.

David's mother was vehemently anti-religious and warned him that if he were to become involved in Judaism in any shape or form, she would immediately disown him.

That was how David was raised. Nevertheless, he developed a deep desire to find out about Judaism, learning and reading up as best as he could, but never daring to tell his mother. Furthermore, he befriended a young Lubavitcher family living not far from his university and they encouraged him in his quest.

One night he fell asleep and had a vivid dream: He was standing in front of the Lubavitcher Rebbe's desk and the Rebbe picked up a letter from a pile in front of him and read out loud:

"We have in our town, a young man named David who is searching for meaning in life and we have befriended him. However, there is no Chabad shaliach (emissary of the Rebbe) in this section of Bordeaux who could help him. Would the Rebbe please send a shaliach to help him become a properly committed Jew."

The Rebbe put the letter down and, addressing David, said, "No, I will not send a shaliach. I will take responsibility myself to bring this young man fully to Judaism."

He then told me to leave university and go to yeshiva and that he would be with me wherever I went; there was nothing to be frightened or concerned about.

After hearing this story, I was captivated. I asked him what happened next. He told me what I knew; that he had been to Brunoir and had then come to Israel. He went on to relate that one fine summer's day, his yeshiva went to the tomb site of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai in Meron.

While he was there somebody pointed out to him a book that he was not familiar with, 'Igrot Kodesh (Holy Letters) of the Lubavitcher Rebbe,' and suggested that he write to the Rebbe. He wrote a letter asking the Rebbe for help and guidance in his studies and placed the letter randomly into the book.

Upon opening the book to where he had placed his letter, he nearly passed out when he read the words, "Why are you concerned? I told you that I have taken responsibility for you. I will be with you in all your endeavors. Just concentrate on learning Torah."

That is exactly what David did from then on.

As mentioned above, there was only one other Jew in the university of Bordeaux. Now David revealed to us that the 'other' was a female medical student whom David had courted before becoming religious. After a couple of years, David returned to Bordeaux to renew this courtship.

How elated he was to discover that the girl had become religious as well, despite having a background as far away from Judaism as David's! She too had a non-Jewish father who had come to live in France; he was originally from Libya. And just like David's, her mother was fiercely against Judaism.

The young couple had agreed to marry and the reason why David was back in Jerusalem was to get married, on the very next day after that Shabbos! He told me that there was not a single guest from either side of the family who would be attending the wedding, apart from his mother. She had become reconciled with David's return to Judaism, and had even begun to keep mitzvot herself. Sadly, the bride's mother refused to travel to the wedding.

My local Chabad shul in Ramot arranged an impromptu ufraf [2] for David. The French yeshiva sent students to sing and dance at the wedding, and then sent them again to liven up each night of the sheva Brachos. [3]

The end of the story is even more astonishing. While in Bordeaux, David had gone to visit his Lubavitcher friends and told them about his dream and the letter that the Rebbe had read to him and his comments.

The wife turned pale. She barely managed to articulate, "On what date was your dream?"

David told her and she promptly fainted.

When she had recovered somewhat she told him that the letter the Rebbe had read out to him was the very same letter that she had written asking the Rebbe to help him, and she had placed it into Igrot Kodesh on the morning immediately preceding his dream.

[1] Perhaps you are disappointed to find this is not a story for Chanukah (which begins this Thursday night). Explanation: I could not resist sharing the contemporary story about prophetic dreams. Towards the beginning of next week, which is entirely Chanukah, we shall send you an excellent Chanukah story, which, to the best of my knowledge has never before been translated. Also, the audio and video story for my Saturday Night WhatsApp group this week are both Chanukah stories.

Dec. 3 afternoon to 4th

Yesterday, Dec. 3rd, there was a wedding of a ‘religious’ couple where the groom invited his platoon-company to bring joy to the couple. 40 family members were there, a DJ and more. What troubled me was that the couple had been dating for a number of years and living together for over a year. If you are religious why not get married sooner? In any event, Mazel Tov to the newlyweds.

Almost every night there is a raid into Yehuda and Shomron. One night 34 terrorists were arrested. Last night was no different but the numbers were perhaps smaller.

On Arutz 14 there was a discussion of missionaries sending ‘gifts’ to the IDF such as tourniquets and other items with make ‘Cheeses’ your man etc.

Two ambulances going with sirens in opposite directions caused me to go down to the shelter. For one siren started as the other was going.
