Parsha Bo, a story, Tu BeShevat reminder, swords of iron and other news

Please remove the following names from the prayer list. Channah bas Ora Leah, Sofia Sarah bas Miriam Maya,

Parsha Bo

Pharaoh has seen now seven plagues. Parts of the crops of Mitzrayim have been ruined by the hail and cattle and men died. Yet like most of the wicked, repentance is not part of their outlook on life.

10:1 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Go in unto Pharaoh; for I have hardened his heart, and the heart of his servants, that I might show these My signs in the midst of them;

Bo is come to Pharaoh. Meaning I am already by Pharaoh and no harm will come to you.

2 and that thou mayest tell in the ears of thy son, and of thy son's son, what I have wrought upon Egypt, and My signs which I have done among them; that ye may know that I am the LORD.'

What is going to happen now will bring about the telling to your son, grandson and onwards the happenings that will occur soon.

3 And Moses and Aaron went in unto Pharaoh, and said unto him: 'Thus saith the LORD, the God of the Hebrews: How long wilt thou refuse to humble thyself before Me? let My people go, that they may serve Me. 4 Else, if thou refuse to let My people go, behold, to-morrow will I bring locusts into thy border; 5 and they shall cover the face of the earth, that one shall not be able to see the earth; and they shall eat the residue of that which is escaped, which remains unto you from the hail, and shall eat every tree which grows for you out of the field; 6 and thy houses shall be filled, and the houses of all thy servants, and the houses of all the Egyptians; as neither thy fathers nor thy fathers' fathers have seen, since the day that they were upon the earth unto this day.' And he turned, and went out from Pharaoh. 7 And Pharaoh's servants said unto him: 'How long shall this man be a snare unto us? let the men go, that they may serve the LORD their God, know thou not yet that Egypt is destroyed?'

Pharaoh is god-king and with HASHEM hardening his heart he is not ready to let the people go but the average Egyptian is a member of an agricultural society has had some if not all of his crops ruined and a swam of locusts is not exactly what a farmer or member of an extended family that farms wants.

8 And Moses and Aaron were brought again unto Pharaoh; and he said unto them: 'Go, serve the LORD your God; but who are they that shall go?'

Pharaoh is about to give in but he has conditions.

9 And Moses said: 'We will go with our young and with our old, with our sons and with our daughters, with our flocks and with our herds we will go; for we must hold a feast unto the LORD.' 10 And he said unto them: 'So be the LORD with you, as I will let you go, and your little ones; see ye that evil is before your face. 11 Not so; go now ye that are men, and serve the LORD; for that is what ye desire.' And they were driven out from Pharaoh's presence.

The little ones got Pharaoh for then the Bnei Yisrael might make a run for it with all their belongings like flocks and herds.

12 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Stretch out thy hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts, that they may come up upon the land of Egypt, and eat every herb of the land, even all that the hail hath left.'

You were temporarily given free will an a chance to repent to save the crops but Pharaoh boy did you miss your chance.

13 And Moses stretched forth his rod over the land of Egypt, and the LORD brought an east wind upon the land all that day, and all the night; and when it was morning, the east wind brought the locusts. 14 And the locusts went up over all the land of Egypt, and rested in all the borders of Egypt; very grievous were they; before them there were no such locusts as they, neither after them shall be such. 15 For they covered the face of the whole earth, so that the land was darkened; and they did eat every herb of the land, and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left; and there remained not any green thing, either tree or herb of the field, through all the land of Egypt.

The Talmud states that in the days of Novi Yoel, the plague was worse with four types of locusts but this plague was the worse for one type of locust. Yoel 1:4, 7 onwards describes destruction. But in Chapter 2 towards the end and the damage is restored by repentance.

16 Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron in haste; and he said: 'I have sinned against the LORD your God, and against you. 17 Now therefore forgive, I pray thee, my sin only this once, and entreat the LORD your God, that He may take away from me this death only.'

The locusts so thick and the plague so bad that Pharaoh had to ask for forgiveness. [There are a number of people on the world stage today that don’t know how to ask for forgiveness and to name a few in the western world that are democratic in nature. Benyamin Netanyahu for his conception on Hamas and on Donald Trump has support from Ted Cruz but publicly he humiliated Heidi Cruz and at least make an apology to the woman.] As for modern dictators they are no better than Pharaoh.

18 And he went out from Pharaoh, and entreated the LORD. 19 And the LORD turned an exceeding strong west wind, which took up the locusts, and drove them into the Red Sea; there remained not one locust in all the border of Egypt. 20 But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he did not let the children of Israel go.

As soon as things got better the humility left and the arrogance returned.

21 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Stretch out thy hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even darkness which may be felt.'

In the past I noted that some plagues had warnings but every third plague came suddenly. Darkness is the 9th plague and it came without a warning or request.

22 And Moses stretched forth his hand toward heaven; and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days;

The darkness came out of Gehennom and for three days it was think but people could move and feel around to obtain food from their storage areas.

23 they saw not one another, neither rose any from his place for three days; but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.

During the second three days it was so awful that the people could not move.

24 And Pharaoh called unto Moses, and said: 'Go ye, serve the LORD; only let your flocks and your herds be stayed; let your little ones also go with you.' 25 And Moses said: 'Thou must also give into our hand sacrifices and burnt-offerings, that we may sacrifice unto the LORD our God. 26 Our cattle also shall go with us; there shall not a hoof be left behind; for thereof must we take to serve the LORD our God; and we know not with what we must serve the LORD, until we come thither.'

They were only able to move to contact Moshe as there is extra power of a Shaliach Mitzvah. And Pharaoh got a notification that Moshe was accepting that he could go and at the time it was unconditional.

27 But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he would not let them go.

But as soon as the darkness lifted, Pharaoh regretted it and then calls Moshe back.

28 And Pharaoh said unto him: 'Get thee from me, take heed to thyself, see my face no more; for in the day thou see my face thou shalt die.' 29 And Moses said: 'Thou hast spoken well; I will see thy face again no more.'

Very well you shall see me no more.

11:1 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Yet one plague more will I bring upon Pharaoh, and upon Egypt; afterwards he will let you go hence; when he shall let you go, he shall surely thrust you out hence altogether.

Moses said, So said the Lord: When he stood before Pharaoh, this prophecy was said to him, for after he [Moses] left his [Pharaoh’s] presence, he did not see his face [again]. — [from Exod. Rabbah 18:1, Mishnath Rabbi Eliezer ch. 19] At the dividing point of the night: Heb. כַּחִצֹתהַלַיְלָה, when the night is divided. כַּחִצֹת is like “when the meal offering was offered up (כַּעִלוֹת) ” (II Kings 3:20); [and like] “when their anger was kindled (בַּחִרוֹת) against us” (Ps. 124:3). This is its simple meaning, which fits its context that חִצֹת is not a noun denoting a half. Our Rabbis, however, interpreted it like כַּחִצִי הַלַיְלָה, at about midnight [lit., half the night], and they said that Moses said כַּחִצֹת, about midnight, meaning near it [midnight], either before it or after it, but he did not say בַּחִצֹת, at midnight, lest Pharaoh’s astrologers err and [then] say, “Moses is a liar,” but the Holy One, blessed be He, Who knows His times and His seconds, בַּחִצוֹת, at midnight. — [from Ber. 3b]

2 Speak now in the ears of the people, and let them ask every man of his neighbor, and every woman of her neighbor, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold.' 3 And the LORD gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians. Moreover the man Moses was very great in the land of Egypt, in the sight of Pharaoh's servants, and in the sight of the people. 4 And Moses said: 'Thus says the LORD: About midnight will I go out into the midst of Egypt; 5 and all the first-born in the land of Egypt shall die, from the first-born of Pharaoh that sits upon his throne, even unto the first-born of the maid-servant that is behind the mill; and all the first-born of cattle. 6 And there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as there hath been none like it, nor shall be like it any more. 7 But against any of the children of Israel shall not a dog whet his tongue, against man or beast; that ye may know how that the LORD doth put a difference between the Egyptians and Israel. 8 And all these thy servants shall come down unto me, and bow down unto me, saying: Get thee out, and all the people that follow thee; and after that I will go out.' And he went out from Pharaoh in hot anger.

The question is did Moshe say this to Pharaoh as it ends with and Moshe left Pharaoh in hot anger. However, the Rashi indicates above in Pasuk 1 that Moshe had left Pharaoh and the end of this part Moshe had be angry, very angry.

9 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Pharaoh will not hearken unto you; that My wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt.' 10 And Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh; and the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he did not let the children of Israel go out of his land.

If you recall the first Rashi in Beresheis this is essentially the start of the nation of Yisrael. Before this was just a narrative now this is commandments that a nation receives. The laws are to go on forever except the putting of the blood on the Mezuzos of the door which was one time only. Also the not leaving the house was one time only. Chapter 12 deals with the calculations of how a new month looks like and the oral laws for preparing the Korban Pessach. The laws of not eating Chametz is established forever.

12:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying: 2 'This month shall be unto you the beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year to you. 3 Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying: In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to their fathers' houses, a lamb for a household; 4 and if the household be too little for a lamb, then shall he and his neighbor next unto his house take one according to the number of the souls; according to every man's eating ye shall make your count for the lamb. 5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year; ye shall take it from the sheep, or from the goats; 6 and ye shall keep it unto the fourteenth day of the same month; and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it at dusk.

The Egyptians could see their god bleeping and tied up by not one but all the Bnei Yisrael and were told it was to be slaughtered and they were sore afraid.

And you shall keep it for inspection: Heb. לְמִשְׁמֶרֶת. This is an expression of inspection, that it [the animal] requires an inspection for a blemish four days before its slaughter. Now why was it [the designated animal] to be taken four days before its slaughter, something not required in the Passover sacrifice of later generations? Rabbi Mathia the son of Charash used to say [in response]: Behold He [God] says: “And I passed by you and saw you, and behold your time was the time of love” (Ezek. 16:8). The [time for the fulfillment of the] oath that I swore to Abraham that I would redeem his children has arrived. But they [the Children of Israel] had no commandments in their hands with which to occupy themselves in order that they be redeemed, as it is said: “but you were naked and bare” (Ezek. 16:7). So He gave them two mitzvoth, the blood of the Passover and the blood of the circumcision. They circumcised themselves on that night, as it is said: “downtrodden with your blood (בְּדָמָיִ) ” (ibid., verse 6), with the two [types of] blood. He [God] states also: “You, too-with the blood of your covenant I have freed your prisoners from a pit in which there was no water” (Zech. 9:11). Moreover, they [the Israelites] were passionately fond of idolatry. [Moses] said to them, “Withdraw and take for yourselves” (Exod. 12:21). [He meant:] withdraw from idolatry and take for yourselves sheep for the mitzvah. — [from Mechilta, here and on verse 21] Note that on verse 21, Rashi explains that differently. shall slaughter it: Now do they all slaughter [it]? Rather, from here we can deduce that a person’s agent is like himself. — [from Mechilta, Kid. 41b] [Therefore, it is considered as if all the Israelites slaughtered the sacrifice.] the entire congregation of the community of Israel: [This means] the congregation, the community, and Israel. From here, they [the Rabbis] said: The communal Passover sacrifices are slaughtered in three [distinct] groups, one after the other. [Once] the first group entered, the doors of the Temple court were locked [until the group finished; they were followed by the second group, etc.,] as is stated in Pesachim (64b). in the afternoon: Heb. בֵּין הָעַרְבָּיִם From six hours [after sunrise] and onward is called בֵּין הָעַרְבַּיִם, literally, between the two evenings, for the sun is inclined toward the place where it sets to become darkened. It seems to me that the expression בֵּין הָעַרְבַּיִם denotes those hours between the darkening of the day and the darkening of the night. The darkening of the day is at the beginning of the seventh hour, when the shadows of evening decline, and the darkening of the night at the beginning of the night. עֶרֶב is an expression of evening and darkness, like “all joy is darkened (וְעָרְבָה) ” (Isa. 24:11). — [from Mechilta]

7 And they shall take of the blood, and put it on the two side-posts and on the lintel, upon the houses wherein they shall eat it. 8 And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; with bitter herbs they shall eat it. 9 Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roast with fire; its head with its legs and with the inwards thereof.

Only eat the Korban roasted.

10 And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; but that which remains of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire.

At a regular Seder one would eat a Korban Chagigah which would be brought every festival and then the Korban Pesach on a full stomach. I recently learned Daf Yomi Pesachim and ordered lamb ribs to get a practical taste of how the Korban must taste like. The meat is very fatty and the bones cannot be broken so one could only eat about the size of an egg. Usually 20 to 50 people participated in a Korban Pesach but still the fat and other things would have to be burned the next day.

11 And thus shall ye eat it: with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste--it is the LORD'S Passover.

You are going to eat in Mitzrayim in haste for tomorrow you are going out and traveling.

12:12 For I will go through the land of Egypt in that night, and will smite all the first-born in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the LORD.

I will pass: like a king who passes from place to place, and with one passing and in one moment they are all smitten. — [from Mechilta] every firstborn in the land of Egypt: Even other firstborn who are in Egypt [will die]. Now how do we know that even the firstborn of the Egyptians who are in other places [will die]? Therefore, Scripture states: “To Him Who smote the Egyptians with their firstborn” (Ps. 136:10). — [from Mechilta] both man and beast: [I.e., first man and then beast.] He who started to sin first from him the retribution starts. — [from Mechilta]  and upon all the gods of Egypt-: The one made of wood will rot, and the one made of metal will melt and flow to the ground. — [from Mechilta] will I wreak judgments-I The Lord: I by Myself and not through a messenger. — [from Passover Haggadah]

Why man and beast – I wonder if they did not threaten the Jews with dogs and have like gladiator battles before Pharaoh. The retribution on the first born, Pharaoh was warned that Israel is HASHEM’s first born son and it naturally follows that false gods are destroyed. Plural Judgements is used because of man, animals and gods.

13 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are; and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and there shall no plague be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.

The blood of the sacrifice will prevent your blood – so we learn that a Korban is in place of us or at least a thanksgiving for getting through a danger. The blood on the doorposts was only for Mitzrayim and not for all generations. Nowadays we have a Mezuzah with the name Shin-Dalet-Yud on the outside and the Shema on the inside which is quite a strong protection of the individuals of the household.

14 And this day shall be unto you for a memorial, and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD; throughout your generations ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance forever.

The evening and day of Pesach is perhaps the most ingrained holiday of the Jewish People. 87% of the Israelis or more have a Seder. Even a place like Kibbutz Rupin has a Seder for it is the symbol of freedom of the people not only from oppression but the start of the people as a nation.

15 Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread; howbeit the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses; for whosoever eats leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel.

Kibbutz Einat has a very tasty bread and Challah Bakery and they wanted to be of the highest Kashrus to sell to the town of Petach Tikva. They are a Mapam aka Mertz Kibbutz of the far left and were anti-observant but they needed the business of Petach Tikva, Rosh HaAyin and vicinity and lo and behold they sold their Chametz for Pesach and the only bread one can obtain on Pesach is from an near-by Arab town. The Bakery was perhaps the first step in Ahavas Yisrael between the Ultra-Orthodox Jews and the anti-religious Kibbutz movement.

16 And in the first day there shall be to you a holy convocation, and in the seventh day a holy convocation; no manner of work shall be done in them, save that which every man must eat, that only may be done by you.

Unlike Sukkos where Shemini Atzeres is a separate holiday which concludes Sukkos; Pesach has a Yom Tov but it is not the Atzeres. The Atzeres falls 50 days later on Chag HaShavuos. [It will only be in Parsha Emor that we are commanded to observe the Omer and it is logical there for it is directing us on the Mitzva of entering Eretz Yisrael and here only what we are to do in leaving Mitzrayim and observance/commemoration for all generations.]

17 And ye shall observe the feast of unleavened bread; for in this selfsame day have I brought your hosts out of the land of Egypt; therefore shall ye observe this day throughout your generations by an ordinance forever. 18 In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at even, ye shall eat unleavened bread, until the one and twentieth day of the month at even.

I cannot think of every negative command where it is gets a positive one in return but here it is simple no-leavened and yes unleavened. Perhaps no Melacha and yes observe Shabbos, adultery is forbidden but one can take a wife and fulfill the Mitzva of be fruitful and multiply and I could go on and on.

19 Seven days shall there be no leaven found in your houses; for whosoever eats that which is leavened, that soul shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he be a sojourner, or one that is born in the land.

That soul shall be cut off from the people is a grievous sin. It is mentioned here with violation of leaven on Pesach, profaning the Shabbos, lusting in Adultery or during the Niddah phase of marriage, idolatry and other forbidden unions. We learn from the secrets of the Kabbala the following information: Sometimes people have so many merits that they do live a long life outside of this behavior defect but after 120 years or less they get judged. The soul is then sent to Kaf Keller prior to Gehennom as it has to be re-educated prior to purification. Kaf Keller can be for hundreds of our years and then judgement. Only the worst like Pharaoh, Nazis, Stalin, etc. are suspended until the finally judgement. So for a few minutes on ones lips or other pleasures in this world one gets long punishment melted out in the next world and what portion will they get with the Bnei Yisrael in the next? Will they be able to see an ordinary Jew but not a Tzaddik – this I do not know? [All the Kares that I have spoken about is either man vs. HASHEM or two consulting adults like Lev. 18:22, 20:10 but the murder the punishment is even greater.]

20 Ye shall eat nothing leavened; in all your habitations shall ye eat unleavened bread.'

Even during the Shoah and in Stalin’s camps Jews tried to bargain to get flour to make Matzos. Others were allowed to eat leaven for Pekuach Nefesh. {I will add that a person born among the Goyim or on a very anti-religious Kibbutz, to a Communist Family, etc. if they grew up this way they are considered a Tinuk that was captured by non-Jews and do not have their souls cut off.}

21 Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel, and said unto them: 'Draw out, and take you lambs according to your families, and kill the Passover lamb. 22 And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and strike the lintel and the two side-posts with the blood that is in the basin; and none of you shall go out of the door of his house until the morning.

Hyssop or אֵזוֹב which we know as Origanum syriacum Marjoram is in modern Arabic and Hebrew Zartar. It usually is a small plant but in my garden I have let it grown to a length of about half a meter and these branches are used.

23 For the LORD will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when He sees the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side-posts, the LORD will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you.

Will pass over: Heb. וּפָסַח, and He will have pity. This may also be rendered: and He will skip over. See Rashi on verses 11 and 13. and He will not permit the destroyer: Heb. וְלֹא יִךְתֵּן, lit., and will not give. [I.e.,] He will not grant him the ability to enter, as in “but God did not permit him (נְתָנוֹ) to harm me” (Gen. 31:7).

Who is the destroyer – he could be the Angel Gavriel as in Yechezkel with the destruction of Yerushalayim but there Gavriel also put a Tav with ink on who will live. Or perhaps here it was Samael aka HaSatan who did HASHEM’s bidding.

24 And ye shall observe this thing for an ordinance to thee and to thy sons forever.

Whether in Eretz Yisrael or in a foreign land all of the Bnei Yisrael are required to observe Pesach.

25 And it shall come to pass, when ye be come to the land which the LORD will give you, according as He hath promised, that ye shall keep this service. 26 And it shall come to pass, when your children shall say unto you: What mean ye by this service? 27 that ye shall say: It is the sacrifice of the LORD'S Passover, for that He passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when He smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses.' And the people bowed the head and worshipped. 28 And the children of Israel went and did so; as the LORD had commanded Moses and Aaron, so did they.

So the children of Israel went and did: Now did they already do [it]? Wasn’t this said to them on Rosh Chodesh? But since they accepted upon themselves [to do it], Scripture credits them for it as if they had [already] done [it]. — [from Mechilta] went and did: Scripture counts also the going, to give reward for the going and reward for the deed. — [from Mechilta] as the Lord commanded Moses and Aaron: [This comes] to tell Israel’s praise, that they did not omit anything of all the commandments of Moses and Aaron. And what is the meaning of “so they did” ? Moses and Aaron also did so. — [from Mechilta]

29 And it came to pass at midnight, that the LORD smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the first-born of Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the first-born of the captive that was in the dungeon; and all the first-born of cattle.

And the Lord: Heb. וַה. Wherever it says, “and the Lord,” it means “He and His tribunal” (Exod. Rabbah 12:4), for the “vav” is an expression of addition, like “so-and-so and (“vav” ) so-and-so.” smote every firstborn: Even [a firstborn] of another nation who was in Egypt. — [from Mechilta] from the firstborn of Pharaoh: Pharaoh, too, was a firstborn, but he remained [alive] of the firstborn. Concerning him, He [God] says: “But, for this [reason] I have allowed you to stand, in order to show you My strength” (Exod. 9:16) at the Red Sea. — [from Mechilta] to the firstborn of the captive: Because they rejoiced at Israel’s misfortune (Tanchuma 7), and furthermore, so that they would not say, “Our deity brought about this retribution” (Mechilta). The firstborn of the slave woman was included, because [Scripture] counts from the most esteemed to the lowest, and the firstborn of the slave woman is more esteemed than the firstborn of the captive. See commentary on Exodus 11:5.

30 And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he, and all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt; for there was not a house where there was not one dead.

And Pharaoh arose: from his bed. at night: Unlike the custom of kings, [who rise] three hours after daybreak. — [from Mechilta] he: [arose] first, and afterwards his servants. This teaches us that he went around to his servants’ houses and woke them up. — [from Mechilta] for there was no house in which no one was dead: If there was a firstborn, he was dead. If there was no firstborn, the oldest household member was called the firstborn, as it is said: “I, too, shall make him [David] a firstborn” (Ps. 89:28) (Tanchuma Buber 19). [Rashi explains there: I shall make him great.] Another explanation: Some Egyptian women were unfaithful to their husbands and bore children from bachelors. Thus they would have many firstborn; sometimes one woman would have five, each one the firstborn of his father (Mechilta 13:33).

31 And he called for Moses and Aaron by night and said: 'Rise up, get you forth from among my people, both ye and the children of Israel; and go, serve the LORD, as ye have said.

So he called for Moses and Aaron at night: [This] tells [us] that Pharaoh went around to the entrances [i.e., to the doors of the houses] of the city, and cried out, “Where is Moses staying? Where is Aaron staying?” -[from Mechilta] both you: the men. as well as the children of Israel: The young children. And go, worship the Lord as you have spoken: Everything is as you said, not as I said. “Neither will I let Israel out” (Exod. 5:2) is nullified. “Who and who are going?” (Exod. 10:8) is nullified. “But your flocks and your cattle shall be left” (Exod. 10:24) is nullified. [Instead,] take also your flocks and also your cattle. What is [the meaning of] “as you have spoken”? You too shall give into our hands sacrifices and burnt offerings (Exod. 10:25). — [from Mechilta]

32 Take both your flocks and your herds, as ye have said, and be gone; and bless me also.'

Take… as you have spoken… but you shall also bless me: [I.e.,] pray for me that I shall not die, for I am a firstborn. — [from Onkelos]

The Medrash says that when he died he was set at the entrance to Gehennom/Limbo and speaks to the wicked: “Why did you not learn from me?”

33 And the Egyptians were urgent upon the people, to send them out of the land in haste; for they said: 'We are all dead men.'

We are all dead: They said, “This is not in accordance with Moses’ decree, for he said, ‘And every firstborn in the land of Egypt will die’ (Exod. 11:5), but here, the ordinary people too are dead, five or ten in one house.” -[from Mechilta] See Rashi on verse 30.

34 And the people took their dough before it was leavened, their kneading-troughs being bound up in their clothes upon their shoulders. 35 And the children of Israel did according to the word of Moses; and they asked of the Egyptians jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment.

The Egyptians at this point were willing to do anything to calm down the wrath of HASHEM.

36 And the LORD gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they let them have what they asked. And they despoiled the Egyptians.

37 And the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand men on foot, beside children. 38 And a mixed multitude went up also with them; and flocks, and herds, even very much cattle.

This mixed multitude would cause a lot of problems in the future.

39 And they baked unleavened cakes of the dough which they brought forth out of Egypt, for it was not leavened; because they were thrust out of Egypt, and could not tarry, neither had they prepared for themselves any victual. 40 Now the time that the children of Israel dwelt in Egypt was four hundred and thirty years. 41 And it came to pass at the end of four hundred and thirty years, even the selfsame day it came to pass, that all the host of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt. 42 It was a night of watching unto the LORD for bringing them out from the land of Egypt; this same night is a night of watching unto the LORD for all the children of Israel throughout their generations.

We see all sorts of numbers: 430 = from the Bris between the pieces of the Korban, 400 = from the birth of Yitzchak and 210 = from the time Yacov and family entered Egypt (Yitzchak was 60 when Yacov was born and Yacov was 130 when he went before Pharaoh or 190 years from 400 leaves 210) and finally 80 years from the birth of Moshe was the time that slavery started because of the astrologers.

43 And the LORD said unto Moses and Aaron: 'This is the ordinance of the Passover: there shall no alien eat thereof;

Once an old Rabbi was in Bavel and could not due to his age make the trip to Yerushalayim for Pesach. A certain Gentile would brag how he went to the holidays of all the gods and the Korban Pesach. He told the Gentile next time to request the tail fat of the Korban (which is forbidden). The Rabbis made an inquiry and he was taken care of on the spot by the people for being a non-Jew who had eaten from our feast where Aliens were forbidden.

44 but every man's servant that is bought for money, when thou hast circumcised him, then shall he eat thereof.

A Gentile Slave could eat and a Ger Tzedek for he/she is now a Jew in every way but not a Ger Toshav cannot eat.

… 50 Thus did all the children of Israel; as the LORD commanded Moses and Aaron, so did they. 51 And it came to pass the selfsame day that the LORD did bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their hosts.

The self-same day is the 400th anniversary of the birth of Yitzchak.

13:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 'Sanctify unto Me all the first-born, whatsoever opens the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of beast, it is Mine.' …15 and it came to pass, when Pharaoh would hardly let us go that the LORD slew all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the first-born of man, and the first-born of beast; therefore I sacrifice to the LORD all that opens the womb, being males; but all the first-born of my sons I redeem. 16 And it shall be for a sign upon thy hand, and for frontlets between thine eyes; for by strength of hand the LORD brought us forth out of Egypt.'

The last section above is the laws of redeeming the first born male of Yisrael and the Korban Bechor for the animals and a mitzvah to redeem a first born donkey.

An Outrageous Marriage made in Tsfat by Rabbi Yerachmiel Tilles

https://ascentofsafed.com/cgi-bin/ascent.cgi?Name=1361-18

During his stay in Tsfat (Safed) in 5683 (1923), my father ['Baba Sali'] made discreet inquiries about which talmidei chachamim (Torah scholars) were in need of receiving tzedakah (charity).

The Rabbis of Tsfat informed him that R. Tzion Cohen, a distinguished and elderly Talmid Chacham, was physically disabled and in desperate need of charity. His wife and all his children perished in the terrible famines of the First World War, leaving him to suffer his pain in utter solitude. Being that he was partially paralyzed, even the most minor chore was an excruciating task for the sick and elderly man.

My father visited Rabbi Tzion in his tiny, stale, unlit room. It measured no more than four amot by four amot [2 meters x 2 meters]. He found the elderly man lying helplessly in his bed, unable to move. Were it not for the generosity of the men and women who came regularly to feed him, his situation would have been much worse. My father gave him a substantial sum of money from his charity fund and then he prepared to bless him with a speedy recovery, intending to take his leave immediately afterwards.

But the sick man suddenly turned to my father and pleaded with him: "Rebbe! Give me a perfect blessing!"

My father, surprised by such a request, asked him, "What blessing do you want me to give you, Grandfather?"

He answered, "Give me a blessing that I should merit to heal from my illness that I should marry and bear children, on order that I may leave offspring in my memory."

My father was astounded by the sick man's request. How could he pray to G-d that an invalid man in his seventies should marry and bear children? This request was beyond the ways of nature.

R. Tzion discerned my father's astonishment, and with confidence he encouraged him. "Rebbe, I have absolute faith that if you will bless me as I have requested of you, my wishes will be fulfilled."

Still, my father was uncertain. "Do you really have total faith?"

"Yes!" the sick man answered. "Otherwise I would not ask this of you."

At last, his perfect faith succeeded in inducing my father to give him the blessing he so strongly requested.

* * *

Ten years later, in the year 5693 (1932), my father once again visited Eretz Yisrael. When he arrived in Tsfat, he suddenly remembered the sickly Rabbi Tzion Cohen and the blessing he had given him.

When he made inquiries about R. Tzion's state, one of the prominent rabbis of Tsfat led him to a fine house. There, to my father's amazement, was none other than R. Tzion, sitting on the porch on an elegant couch, dressed in the finest clothes. At his feet played two youngsters.

After having refreshments brought in, R. Tzion invited my mystified father to listen to his miraculous tale.

"You see, Your Holiness, a wealthy widow from South America arrived in Tsfat with her seventeen-year-old daughter. Upon asking the rabbis of Tsfat to whom she should give charity, she was directed to my poor home.

"When she saw my awful state, this saintly woman became extremely distressed, and she took pity on me. She ordered her servants to remove all the furniture from my tiny room at once, to paint the walls, and to purchase a new bed and linen. As well as covering all the costs, she personally supervised that her orders were executed precisely according to instructions.

'But this was not the end of the miracle.

'The holy woman decided not to return to South America, but instead, to remain at my side and to take care of me. An interpreter informed me of her decision, and I protested strongly.

"G-d forbid! I will not remain in seclusion with a woman and thereby violate the prohibition of yichud ('aloneness': remaining in seclusion with any woman other than one's wife [or mother or grandmother or sister]).

"The interpreter relayed my refusal to her, but the determined woman asked, 'What can I do so that I will be permitted to stay by your side?'

"The bewildered interpreter answered, 'The only way is for Madam to marry R. Tzion according to Jewish law.'

"And can Your Holiness believe G-d's ways in the world - she consented to marry me immediately!

"I again protested vehemently, however, much to the surprise of the local rabbis.

"They threatened me, stating, 'If you refuse to marry this woman, we will announce a prohibition against helping you any further.'

"So, when I saw that there was absolutely no other choice, I went even further and made what must have seemed to be quite an outrageous request: 'If you really want to help me, then ask her to allow me to marry her daughter!'

"Well, when the widow was told of my latest request, she again startled us all and answered, 'The decision is not mine to make. My daughter must decide for herself.'

"At that point, the daughter was told the entire conversation as well as about Rabbi Tzion Cohen's firm belief that he would father children, and asked whether she would agree to marry an old, sick man. Of course, we all assumed the bizarre tale had reached its conclusion, but her answer also astonished everyone.

"'I will do whatever my mother says. If my mother agrees, then I am 100% willing to marry him. It will be a great privilege and a merit to be married to such an important Torah sage and to bear the children that he so absolutely has faith will be born.'

"And so, my dear Savior, this apartment was rented immediately, the best medical care was made available to me, and thank G-d, I have recovered from my illness. But again, that is not the end of the miracles--your blessing came to be; I have borne two sons!'

"And you know, Your Holiness, all of these blessings came to me as a consequence of my devotion to the study of Torah and my fear of Heaven, as it says, 'G-d desires the prayer of the righteous, He hears their supplications, and fulfills their words.'"

Biographical note:
Rabbi Yisrael Abuhatzeira [Rosh Hashana 1889 - 4 Shvat 1984] known as Baba Sali, was born in Tafilalet Morocco, to one of Jewry's most illustrious families. From a young age he was renowned as a sage, miracle maker and master kabbalist. In 1964 he moved to Eretz Yisrael, eventually settling in 1970 in the Southern development town he made famous, Netivot, and where, since 1984, his tomb has become one of Israel's most visited pilgrimage sites. Day 99 and week 15 starts. Finally, with reserve duty and a long war delay, out “grooms” of Torah and Beresheis made their Kiddush for their Aliyah of Simchas Torah, that fateful Oct. 7th where one could see contrails of iron dome and hear the booms as we prayed.

Condensed: Rabbi of Tsfat and leading Religious Zionist Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu wrote an open letter to the International Court of Justice in the Hague regarding the lawsuit by South Africa against Israel.

“One of the greatest wonders of our generation is the ability to see how dozens of prophecies of God are coming true, both regarding the world and Israel.

... “All of those who have tried to stand in the way of God’s prophecies have paid a heavy price. Ten regular armies fled before Jews who had not held weapons for two thousand years, that had only just emerged from the furnaces of Auschwitz and Treblinka, who fought bare-handed and won.

... ‘’You have a free choice to either heed God’s word and succeed, or be like Pharaoh, who drowned in the Red Sea. You can be like King George V who agreed with God’s word, or like the Arab states who closed their eyes and hearts, and do not want to see the acts of God or head His words, and fail time after time.’

Today the inflation index will be published in Israel and on a normal month that is the talk of the 15th and 16th of the secular month. There are screams all over the radio why the agriculture subsidiary should not be cut, cuts to social workers & psychiatric care and this one I agree with, transportation ministry, there are reasons not to cut the health ministry budget and that of fighting crime in the Arab Sector. It is a matter guns or butter going back the economical thesis of World War I and World War II where you could not have both. Israel is not a world power in oil and we even had to shut down our natural gas production due to Hezballah.
