Parsha Mishpatim, two stories, updates on Swords of Iron including day 125

Parsha Mishpatim

The Nation has just received the decalogue and the first 5 Mitzvos deal with man and his Creator and the second five between man and man. That is a nice start but there are all sorts of things that one can damage his fellow man. That is where we find ourselves this week. There are twenty three positive commands and thirty negative commands.

21:1 Now these are the ordinances which thou shalt set before them. 2 If thou buy a Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve; and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing.

There are two reasons that a Ben Yisrael becomes a full-time servant or slave. The first is to cover a debit or it is a famine outside and the rich man can sustain him for work. The second is that the man was a thief and the Beis Din sells him to pay off his thievery.

3 If he come in by himself, he shall go out by himself; if he be married, then his wife shall go out with him.

His wife goes with him and she is supported too.

4 If his master gives him a wife, and she bear him sons or daughters; the wife and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out by himself.

This refers to a Canaanite female slave.

5 But if the servant shall plainly say: I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free; 6 then his master shall bring him unto God, and shall bring him to the door, or unto the door-post; and his master shall bore his ear through with an awl; and he shall serve him forever.

He should be a free Ben Yisrael but if not, the ear that heard “Thou shall have no others beside ME. In any event, whether after six years he goes free or when the horn of the Yovel (Jubilee) proclaims liberty throughout the land. The servant receives severance pay or compensation.

7 And if a man sells his daughter to be a maid-servant, she shall not go out as the men-servants do. 8 If she please not her master, who hath espoused her to himself, then shall he let her be redeemed; to sell her unto a foreign people he shall have no power, seeing he hath dealt deceitfully with her.

He sold her because he could not afford her or he thought that maybe the rich man will take her for a wife or for his son a wife.

9 And if he espouse her unto his son, he shall deal with her after the manner of daughters. 10 If he take him another wife, her food, her raiment, and her conjugal rights, shall he not diminish.

All of a sudden the she is not the sole wife but she gets what he gave her in the beginning regarding food, shelter and clothing.

11 And if he do not these three unto her, then shall she go out for nothing, without money.

If she reaches 12.5 years old or sows child bearing signs, she goes out free from the master with compensation for he did not marry her or give her to his son.

12 He that smites a man, so that he dies, shall surely be put to death.

The Pshat looks one way but if he has to have witnesses and a warning to receive capital punishment it is not so easy. However, in those days there was the avenger of blood and things could get out of hand as in Arab families today.

13 And if a man lies not in wait, but God cause it to come to hand; then I will appoint thee a place whither he may flee.

Cities of refuge for an accidental manslayer. Example he was carrying bricks up a ladder and is foot slipped and the brick(s) fell and hit somebody underneath in the head or an axe handle fly off.

14 And if a man come presumptuously upon his neighbor, to slay him with guile; thou shalt take him from Mine altar, that he may die.

Not a direct murder like with a knife, sword or other weapon but to put a trap or poison before him.

15 And he that smites his father, or his mother, shall be surely put to death.

There is also a rule that when a child grows up to be 13years or so, the father should not physically discipline him lest he put a stumbling block before the blind rage of a teen.

16 And he that steals a man, and sells him, or if he be found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death.

For slavery.

17 And he that curses his father or his mother, shall surely be put to death.

Every parent makes mistakes and sometimes punishes or does things that hurt his child physically or mentally. The child must not curse the parent for the parent has the power of education from HASHEM whether for good or bad.

18 And if men contend, and one smite the other with a stone, or with his fist, and he die not, but keep his bed; 19 if he rises again, and walk abroad upon his staff, then shall he that smote him be quit; only he shall pay for the loss of his time, and shall cause him to be thoroughly healed.

He has to pay damages for injury, healing, embarrassment and time lost from employment.

20 And if a man smite his bondman, or his bondwoman, with a rod, and he die under his hand, he shall surely be punished. 21 Notwithstanding if he continues a day or two, he shall not be punished; for he is his money.

If it is a Ben Yisrael bondman he is treated like any Ben Yisrael and a trial has to take place. If a non-Jewish slave it is like destroying his own possessions.

22 And if men strive together, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart, and yet no harm follow, he shall be surely fined, according as the woman's husband shall lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine.

Since we do not know if the fetus would be a viable child or a miscarriage anyway, we have him pay a fine.

23 But if any harm follows, then thou shalt give life for life, 24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25 burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.

If the woman dies from his action due to the miscarriage he is put on trial and then the rest mention like eye, broken nose, making deaf, etc. is monetary compensation

26 And if a man smite the eye of his bondman, or the eye of his bondwoman, and destroy it, he shall let him go free for his eye's sake. 27 And if he smites out his bondman's tooth, or his bondwoman's tooth, he shall let him go free for his tooth's sake.

For his non-Jewish slave and any other organ or limb.

28 And if an ox gore a man or a woman, that they die, the ox shall be surely stoned, and its flesh shall not be eaten; but the owner of the ox shall be quit.

He was not want to gore people and there was a fence in place for a normal containment of an ox but something happened that the ox somehow knocked down the fence or the wind or fire destroyed it and the ox came out and gored the man.

29 But if the ox was wont to gore in time past, and warning hath been given to its owner, and he hath not kept it in, but it hath killed a man or a woman; the ox shall be stoned, and its owner also shall be put to death.

If the ox gored people or other oxen three times he should have be sent to the slaughter house or behind stronger iron bars and now it is if the man leaving the ox where he was it was like a death trap.

30 If there be laid on him a ransom, then he shall give for the redemption of his life whatsoever is laid upon him. 31 Whether it have gored a son, or have gored a daughter, according to this judgment shall it be done unto him. 32 If the ox gore a bondman or a bondwoman, he shall give unto their master thirty shekels of silver, and the ox shall be stoned.

This is the valuation of men specified in Bechukosai.

33 And if a man shall open a pit, or if a man shall dig a pit and not cover it, and an ox or an ass fall therein, 34 the owner of the pit shall make it good; he shall give money unto the owner of them, and the dead beast shall be his.

He should have put a fence around the pit (as the electrical or water companies do I cities).

35 And if one man's ox hurt another's, so that it dies; then they shall sell the live ox, and divide the price of it; and the dead also they shall divide. 36 Or if it be known that the ox was wont to gore in time past, and its owner hath not kept it in; he shall surely pay ox for ox, and the dead beast shall be his own.

Here we go exactly like the Pshat.

37 If a man steals an ox, or a sheep, and kill it, or sell it, he shall pay five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep.

This is a fine from the Torah against thievery.

22:1 If a thief be found breaking in, and be smitten so that he dies, there shall be no blood guiltiness for him.

This is a case of self-defense from the thief.

2 If the sun be risen upon him, there shall be blood guiltiness for him--he shall make restitution; if he has nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft.

If the sun shone upon him: This is nothing but a metaphor [meaning] if the matter is clear to you that he [the thief] is peaceably disposed toward you-similar to the sun, which represents peace in the world-so it is obvious to you that he has not come to kill [you]. Even if the owner of the money rises against him, for instance, if a father breaks in to steal his son’s property, it is known that the father has mercy on his son, and he has not come with the idea of murdering [him]. -[From Sanh. 72a, Mechilta]. He has blood: He [the thief] is considered as a live person, and it is [considered] murder if the property owner kills him. he shall surely pay: The thief [shall pay] the money he stole, and he is not liable to death. [The thief is considered to have been sentenced to death in cases where the property owner is allowed kill him. In these cases, the thief is exempt from any monetary obligation incurred when he dug into the house. In cases where the property owner may not kill him, however, the thief is not considered liable to death, and thus must pay for what he stole.] Onkelos, who rendered: “If the eye of witnesses fell upon him,” adopted another view, saying that if witnesses discovered him [the thief] before the property owner came, and when the property owner came against him, they warned him not to kill him, [the thief is considered as if] he has blood; i.e., he [the owner] is liable for him [the thief] if he kills him, because since [he has committed his crime when] people can see him, this thief has not come with the intention to murder, and he would not kill the property owner.

3 If the theft be found in his hand alive, whether it be ox, or ass, or sheep, he shall pay double.

A fine.

4 If a man causes a field or vineyard to be eaten, and shall let his beast loose, and it feed in another man's field; of the best of his own field, and of the best of his own vineyard, shall he make restitution.

Measure for measure.

5 If fire break out, and catch in thorns, so that the shocks of corn, or the standing corn, or the field are consumed; he that kindled the fire shall surely make restitution.

One does not light a fire on a hot windy day. Or he purposely destroyed his neighbor’s field or orchard.

6 If a man delivers unto his neighbor money or stuff to keep, and it be stolen out of the man's house; if the thief be found, he shall pay double.

A fine.

7 If the thief be not found, then the master of the house shall come near unto God, to see whether he have not put his hand unto his neighbor's goods. 8 For every matter of trespass, whether it be for ox, for ass, for sheep, for raiment, or for any manner of lost thing, whereof one saith: 'This is it,' the cause of both parties shall come before God; he whom God shall condemn shall pay double unto his neighbor.

ELOKIM here means Beis Din Tehillim 82.

9 If a man deliver unto his neighbor an ass, or an ox, or a sheep, or any beast, to keep, and it die, or be hurt, or driven away, no man seeing it; 10 the oath of the LORD shall be between them both, to see whether he have not put his hand unto his neighbor's goods; and the owner thereof shall accept it, and he shall not make restitution.

He agreed to look after the item(s) and did so but due to circumstances beyond his control the object is lost or destroyed.

11 But if it be stolen from him, he shall make restitution unto the owner thereof.

He should have chased the thief away.

12 If it be torn in pieces, let him bring it for witness; he shall not make good that which was torn. 13 And if a man borrows aught of his neighbor, and it be hurt, or die, the owner thereof not being with it, he shall surely make restitution. 14 If the owner thereof be with it, he shall not make it good; if it be a hireling, he loses his hire.

This is the normal case but if an elderly animal or old tool in modern times it is a case of life expectancy of the animal or item assuming that the working standards were reasonable.

15 And if a man entices a virgin that is not betrothed, and lie with her, he shall surely pay a dowry for her to be his wife. 16 If her father utterly refuses to give her unto him, he shall pay money according to the dowry of virgins.

Until the age of 12, the father receives the money but older than that, the female is considered a woman and the money goes to her and she can marry him if she pleases.

17 Thou shalt not suffer a sorceress to live.

Magic outside of the entertainment field is forbidden and that includes males.

18 Whosoever lies with a beast shall surely be put to death.

We come across this in Vayikra Chapter 18 about being perverse and getting the death penalty.

19 He that sacrifices unto the gods, save unto the LORD only, shall be utterly destroyed.

This is treason against G-D and the beliefs of our forefathers.

20 And a stranger shalt thou not wrong, neither shalt thou oppress him; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt. 21 Ye shall not afflict any widow, or fatherless child. 22 If thou afflict them in any wise--for if they cry at all unto Me, I will surely hear their cry-- 23 My wrath shall wax hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.

The three are under the Hashgacha of the Holy One Blessed Be He. Therefore, be careful in dealing with them and honestly.

24 If thou lend money to any of My people, even to the poor with thee, thou shalt not be to him as a creditor; neither shall ye lay upon him interest. 25 If thou at all take thy neighbor's garment to pledge, thou shalt restore it unto him by that the sun goes down; 26 for that is his only covering, it is his garment for his skin; wherein shall he sleep? and it shall come to pass, when he cries unto Me, that I will hear; for I am gracious.

Most of the people who borrowed in the times of the Tanach were especially poor. Nowadays, this does not apply to people with a number of garments.

27 Thou shalt not revile God, nor curse a ruler of thy people.

Nowadays we have the right to vote and therefore it is a Mitzvah to vote and make your vote count. You have nobody to curse today but stupidity or being fooled.

28 Thou shalt not delay to offer of the fulness of thy harvest, and of the outflow of thy presses. The first-born of thy sons shalt thou give unto Me. 29 Likewise shalt thou do with thine oxen, and with thy sheep; seven days it shall be with its dam; on the eighth day thou shalt give it Me.

This is for the Bechor or Maaser Behayma.

30 And ye shall be holy men unto Me; therefore, ye shall not eat any flesh that is torn of beasts in the field; ye shall cast it to the dogs.

Trafe is forbidden. Trafe includes meat that was not ritually slaughtered.

23:1 Thou shalt not utter a false report; put not thy hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness.

You should be a true loyal witness.

2 Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shalt thou bear witness in a cause to turn aside after a multitude to pervert justice;

The Talmud brings down the story of Rabbi Eliezer HaGadol who refused to change his belief even put in Cherem (spiritually boycotted) for what he heard from his Rabbi and Teacher. Rabbi Akavia Ben Mahalalel gave up being prince to Hillel, the elder, for not changing Halacha he heard from many.

3 neither shalt thou favor a poor man in his cause.

Just because G-D has made somebody rich and the other poor shall not grant him a right over another.

4 If thou meet thine enemy's ox or his ass going astray, thou shalt surely bring it back to him again.

This type of circumstance happened to me with other property and a certain neighbor.

5 If thou see the ass of him that hates thee lying under its burden, thou shalt forbear to pass by him; thou shalt surely release it with him.

You must over-come your hatred even for a wicked Jew and do something similar if it happens.

6 Thou shalt not wrest the judgment of thy poor in his cause. 7 Keep thee far from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous slay thou not; for I will not justify the wicked.

This is a double edge sword of judging properly the poor vs. the rich. One cannot let the rich step on the poor man but then it is not our job to improperly wrest money from the rich man to give to the poor but have a righteous judgement.

8 And thou shalt take no gift; for a gift blinds them that have sight, and perverts the words of the righteous.

One who receives a present from somebody tends to have a favorable opinion of somebody and therefore it is almost impossible to be neutral. I have heard that there are cases that the son of a Rebbe vs. the daughter or Nephew of a Rebbe ask the Rebbe to make a decision. But that is not the healthiest situation.

9 And a stranger shalt thou not oppress; for ye know the heart of a stranger, seeing ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.

One thing is not to oppress the stranger but if you look at day 125 below, illegal infiltrators have robbed or caused damage to public shelters in Tel Aviv. Both sides have to behave properly.

10 And six years thou shalt sow thy land, and gather in the increase thereof; 11 but the seventh year thou shalt let it rest and lie fallow, that the poor of thy people may eat; and what they leave the beast of the field shall eat. In like manner thou shalt deal with thy vineyard, and with thy olive yard.

Observe the Shmita year.

12 Six days thou shalt do thy work, but on the seventh day thou shalt rest; that thine ox and thine ass may have rest, and the son of thy handmaid, and the stranger, may be refreshed.

Observing and resting on Shabbos is good for you Neshama. Not only you but your servants shall refresh themselves. Sad indeed is the servant that has to be completely on call 24/7. Non-Jews helping the infirm and elderly only do the minimum on Shabbos or they get fully off.

13 And in all things that I have said unto you take ye heed; and make no mention of the name of other gods, neither let it be heard out of thy mouth.

Nowadays we can mention the names of the planets which were once gods as the Goyim have cancelled them as a deity. Buddha and Confucius neither are considered a deity but ancient philosophers or founders of a religion.

14 Three times thou shalt keep a feast unto Me in the year.

These are the three Regelim and listed below.

15 The feast of unleavened bread shalt thou keep; seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, as I commanded thee, at the time appointed in the month Abib--for in it thou came out from Egypt; and none shall appear before Me empty; 16 and the feast of harvest, the first-fruits of thy labors, which thou sow in the field; and the feast of ingathering, at the end of the year, when thou gather in thy labors out of the field. 17 Three times in the year all thy males shall appear before the Lord GOD. 18 Thou shalt not offer the blood of My sacrifice with leavened bread; neither shall the fat of My feast remain all night until the morning. 19 The choicest first-fruits of thy land thou shalt bring into the house of the LORD thy God. Thou shalt not seethe a kid in its mother's milk.

The names of the Chaggim are not mentioned but the times are.

You shall not cook a kid: Heb. גְּדִי. A calf and a lamb are also included in [the term] גְּדִי, for גְּדִי is only an expression of a tender young animal. [This you know] from what you find in many places in the Torah where גְּדִי is written, and it was necessary to write after it עִזִים [to qualify it as a kid], for example, “I will send you a kid גְּדִי עִזִים ” (Gen. 38:17); “the kid גְּדִי הָעִזִים ” (Gen. 38:20); “two kids עִזִים גְּדָיֵי ” (Gen. 27:9); to teach you that wherever גְּדִי is mentioned unqualified, it also means a calf and a lamb. This [prohibition] is written in three places in the Torah, one for the prohibition of eating [meat with milk], one for the prohibition of deriving any benefit [from meat with milk], and one for the prohibition of cooking [meat with milk]. -[From Chul. 113b, 115b]

The only reason that this appears to me to be mentioned in conjunction with the three Regelim is that the Goyim almost everyday and on their festivals have meat cooked with cheese.

20 Behold, I send an angel before thee, to keep thee by the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared. 21 Take heed of him, and hearken unto his voice; be not rebellious against him; for he will not pardon your transgression; for My name is in him. 22 But if thou shalt indeed hearken unto his voice, and do all that I speak; then I will be an enemy unto thine enemies, and an adversary unto thine adversaries.

You have a personal Guardian Angel as mentioned if Sefer Yoshua Chapter 1.

23 For Mine angel shall go before thee, and bring thee in unto the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Canaanite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; and I will cut them off. 24 Thou shalt not bow down to their gods, nor serve them, nor do after their doings; but thou shalt utterly overthrow them, and break in pieces their pillars. 25 And ye shall serve the LORD your God, and He will bless thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee.

Ignore the other gods and trust in your G-D.

26 None shall miscarry, nor be barren, in thy land; the number of thy days I will fulfil.

This is a great miracle both not to miscarry or be barren. Today, unfortunately, both occur even unto the righteous.

27 I will send My terror before thee, and will discomfit all the people to whom thou shalt come, and I will make all thine enemies turn their backs unto thee. 28 And I will send the hornet before thee, which shall drive out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hittite, from before thee. 29 I will not drive them out from before thee in one year, lest the land become desolate, and the beasts of the field multiply against thee.

I will remove them slowly. Lest the wild beasts come in. During Covid, wild boars took over Haifa and Coyotes came into Ramat Gan or the greater Tel Aviv area and foxes, weasels and more entered some populated areas. So one can understand ancient times all the more so.

30 By little and little I will drive them out from before thee, until thou be increased, and inherit the land. 31 And I will set thy border from the Red Sea even unto the sea of the Philistines, and from the wilderness unto the River; for I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand; and thou shalt drive them out before thee.

From the river to the sea, Eretz Yisrael belongs to you and me.

32 Thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor with their gods. 33 They shall not dwell in thy land--lest they make thee sin against Me, for thou wilt serve their gods--for they will be a snare unto thee.

They don’t belong here and neither does their gods.

24:1 And unto Moses He said: 'Come up unto the LORD, thou, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel; and worship ye afar off; 2 and Moses alone shall come near unto the LORD; but they shall not come near; neither shall the people go up with him.' 3 And Moses came and told the people all the words of the LORD, and all the ordinances; and all the people answered with one voice, and said: 'All the words which the LORD hath spoken will we do.' 4 And Moses wrote all the words of the LORD, and rose up early in the morning, and built an altar under the mount, and twelve pillars, according to the twelve tribes of Israel. 5 And he sent the young men of the children of Israel, who offered burnt-offerings, and sacrificed peace-offerings of oxen unto the LORD. 6 And Moses took half of the blood, and put it in basins; and half of the blood he dashed against the altar. 7 And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the hearing of the people; and they said: 'All that the LORD hath spoken will we do, and obey.' 8 And Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said: 'Behold the blood of the covenant, which the LORD hath made with you in agreement with all these words.' 9 Then went up Moses, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel; 10 and they saw the God of Israel; and there was under His feet the like of a paved work of sapphire stone, and the like of the very heaven for clearness. 11 And upon the nobles of the children of Israel He laid not His hand; and they beheld God, and did eat and drink.

They did not see G-D but perhaps the Divine Chariot my opinion vs. Rashi below.

And they perceived the God of Israel: They gazed and peered and [because of this] were doomed to die, but the Holy One, blessed is He, did not want to disturb the rejoicing of [this moment of the giving of] the Torah. So He waited for Nadab and Abihu [i.e., to kill them,] until the day of the dedication of the Mishkan, and for [destroying] the elders until [the following incident:] “And the people were as if seeking complaints… and a fire of the Lord broke out against them and devoured at the edge (בִּקְצֵה) of the camp” (Num. 11:1). [בִקְצֵה denotes] the officers (בִקְצִינִים) of the camp [i.e., the elders]. -[From Midrash Tanchuma Behaalosecha 16]  Like the forming of a sapphire brick: that was before Him at the time of the bondage, to remember Israel’s straits [i.e.,] that they were enslaved in the making of bricks. -[From Lev. Rabbah 23:8]   And like the appearance of the heavens for clarity: Since they were [finally] redeemed, there was light and joy before Him. -[From Lev. Rabbah 23:8]  And like the appearance: Heb. וּכְעֶצֶם, as the Targum (Onkelos) renders וּכְמֶחֱזֵי : an expression meaning appearance. F or clarity: Heb. לָטֹהַר, an expression meaning clear and unclouded. -[From Lev. Rabbah 23:8] I.e., during the bondage of the Israelites, the sapphire brick clouded the heavens, but after the Exodus, the heavens became clear and not a cloud was in sight. -[Lev. Rabbah 23:8]

12 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Come up to Me into the mount and be there; and I will give thee the tables of stone, and the law and the commandment, which I have written, that thou mayest teach them.' 13 And Moses rose up, and Joshua his minister; and Moses went up into the mount of God. 14 And unto the elders he said: 'Tarry ye here for us, until we come back unto you; and, behold, Aaron and Hur are with you; whosoever hath a cause, let him come near unto them.'

Moshe will go up the mount but Hur will die opposing the Golden Calf of the mob.

15 And Moses went up into the mount, and the cloud covered the mount. 16 And the glory of the LORD abode upon mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days; and the seventh day He called unto Moses out of the midst of the cloud.

Sort of inviting Moshe as a Shabbos guest.

17 And the appearance of the glory of the LORD was like devouring fire on the top of the mount in the eyes of the children of Israel. 18 And Moses entered into the midst of the cloud, and went up into the mount; and Moses was in the mount forty days and forty nights.

We must try our best even if we don’t succeed. By Rachamim Pauli

Captain Hanan Drori Zal should not have been in Gaza. He had disabilities that should have exempted him from front line service. He fought tooth and nail to get in and into an officer’s course. He was working as a medical staff member when he was seriously wounded in Gaza. He picked up a fungal infection. The main injury was not his main problem but the fungus and he became to a state of serious life – threatening. Already the IDF lost one soldier to fungus.

His doctors recommended the experimental drug Fosmanogepix from Pfizer. As his condition deteriorated on Friday-Shabbos, the Prime Minister called up the President of Pfizer and he worked hard to open up on a holiday the Pfizer plant in Shannon Ireland and special planes with ability to cool the medication transferred it to Dublin and then to Frankfort ending up in Tel Aviv completely refrigerated. The medicine arrived but by the time it got to the hospital Hanan was dying on a Kiddush HASHEM and passed away.

The effort, prayers and expenses were not in vain. For we do not know the effects of unbounding love have upon heaven to save other lives. Tennyson wrote in The Charge of the Light Brigade “Not for us to ask the reason why but for us to do and die.” It is good for to try our best. We can try to be like Moshe Rabbaynu but will not get either his prophecy or ability to split the sea. However, we must emulate and try what we can. My worry is not being like Moshe but did I do what Rachamim Pauli could have done if he really tried!

The Bankrupting Shabbos Break-in by Rabbi Yerachmiel Tilles

https://ascentofsafed.com/cgi-bin/ascent.cgi?Name=1365-22

It was Autumn 2018/5779, the Shabbos of the Torah reading, Chaya Sarah. I (R. Yosef Shidler) at the time, was enjoying a Friday night meal with my family at our home in Lakewood, New Jersey. It felt like any other Shabbos in our home. We finished our meal at the usual time, and went to sleep after reading a very interesting Baal Shem Tov story.

Until…KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK!

It was early Shabbos morning, and we were woken up by the loud banging at the front door.

'Who could it be?' I thought to myself.

It was my next-door neighbor, who looked very worried. "R' Yosef, you better come out right away! It looks like someone broke into your car. It doesn't look good, R' Yosef. It actually looks really bad!"

I couldn't believe what I was hearing. My wife and I quickly got dressed and made our way out to the car.

My neighbor was right. The car was a mess. Someone had broken the car window in order to get in, but that wasn't the worst part.

You see, my wife and I run a photography business. We take pictures and videos for people on their most special days. Before Shabbos, I'd left well over $10,000 in cameras and gear for taking pictures in that car. When my neighbor told me about the break in, I was very worried, and when I got to my car, my worst fears quickly came true.

Everything was gone. All I could see was broken glass everywhere, all over the seats and the floors, and not a single camera in sight. It was terrible. I knew right away that this was truly a bad situation.

We needed help, but it was Shabbos; we couldn't just phone the police., My wife volunteered to find a non-Jewish person to call the police for us. Thank G-d, she succeeded, and a group of policemen came a short time later.

"It's definitely a break-in, all right," the police officer said, looking at our poor car.

"It's very nice that you figured that out," I replied, a little annoyed he would say something so obvious and unhelpful. "What do we do now? I need those cameras back - they're important and expensive, and I can't do my job without them!"

"You'll meet with someone at the police station tonight. Hopefully, they'll help you get this worked out."

The police left the house, and that's when all of the sadness and anger came crashing down for my wife and I. We'd just lost a lot of money. How were we supposed to run a photography business now, with no cameras and no money to buy more?

My wife turned to me and said, "You know, I was speaking with some of the neighbors down the street, and they saw the robber break into our car, but they decided not to call the police. They didn't think it was the right thing to do on Shabbos. But they totally could have called and saved the situation! Why should that be considered Chillul [profanation of] Shabbos? Instead, they just… watched it happen!"

She was clearly upset. I was too, but I tried to calm myself, realizing that I needed to think about the situation like a Chasid.

"I hear you," I answered her, "but let's do our best to be Chasidim. The Alter Rebbe says in Tanya that we shouldn't even think a bad thought about another Jew! They were trying to do the right thing. This was how they wanted to please G-d. We should not judge them negatively; they didn't steal anything."

"You're right," she agreed. "It wasn't their fault. It's all Hashgacha Pratis ('divine supervision of the individual'). Anyway, surely our insurance will pay us back, G-d willing."

My wife was right. We had insurance that was supposed to help out if, G-D forbid, something like this ever happened. However, I also knew insurance companies would only pay you back for lost or broken things if you gave them serial numbers for each item. (A serial number is a number given to each item in the factory once it's made. It's like each camera's own unique i.d.)

I'd given the insurance company serial numbers for most of my cameras and gear, but I hadn't given them numbers for many of the newer and more expensive items. This made me very nervous. 'Would they still pay me back for the stolen things?' I worried. I wasn't sure. We could end up losing all of it. It would cost me thousands of dollars to buy everything again.

Deep down, I knew all of this was the will of G-d, just as my wife had said, but it was hard to feel better about it. I went on with my day, trying to have strong Emunah (faith) and Bitachon (trust) in G-d, that He would make everything work out well for us, but I have to admit, it was very, very, very hard for me. My whole business relied on those cameras. Without it, I had no way to earn enough money to support my family!

Shabbos continued as usual, but after the meal, my nervous thoughts became too hard to handle. So, I did what any Chassid would do. I stood in front of a picture of the Lubavitcher Rebbe and said, "Rebbe, I know that Hashem made this happen, but it's getting to be too hard for me. Please let me know everything will work out okay!"

And with that, I pulled out at random one book of Igros Kodesh, the multi-volume set of the Lubavitcher Rebbe's holy correspondence. I opened the book to a random page and read the letter printed on it.

In it, the Rebbe was responding to someone who had written to him about how he was having a hard time making a living. The Rebbe responded that if it were someone else, he could understand why they were complaining. "But you," the Rebbe said in the letter, "you believe in G-d!" The Rebbe then went on to write that it would soon be clear that the whole problem was just a test, and that "you will see Brachos (blessings) for you, your family, and your business."

'Wow. What an amazingly clear answer!' I thought to myself. I couldn't believe it! 'It's like this was written just for me!'

At that point, I felt so much joy! My wife and kids were at the park, so in high spirits I danced my way there to share the good news!

"What happened?" asked my wife, laughing. "Did they find the cameras?"

"No!" I continued dancing, while other parents and their kids kept staring. I didn't care. I was too excited!

"So, what's with the dancing?"

"The Rebbe gave us a blessing! I'm sure we'll get our cameras back - and everything else, too!" That was all I said, and I believed it completely.

I sat in shul that afternoon, participating with another 15 or 20 men in the Third Shabbat Meal, telling everyone about the incredible letter I received.

"Yeah, okay. Very nice, Yosef. Let's see what happens," one man said.

It was easy for me to tell that people didn't accept my conclusions. But I believed in the Rebbe's blessings more strongly than ever.

"Sir. Ma'am." The detective looked my wife and I in the eyes at the police station. It was after Shabbos, and our appointment had finally come around.

"I'm afraid it's highly unlikely that we'll find your cameras. We see these types of break-ins and robberies often, and I'll tell ya, there's a 98% chance we won't find it." He shook his head back and forth while he spoke, as if he felt sorry for us. "But we'll try. When we make our rounds, we'll keep an eye out for your stuff."

It wasn't the most helpful meeting, but I still had faith in the Rebbe's blessing that everything would work out. I wasn't going to let anything get me down.

* * *

A few months earlier, the airlines had advertised a special price for plane tickets to Europe. I'd bought tickets to go to Ukraine with my wife to visit the burial sites of the first and second Chabad Rebbes - the Alter Rebbe in Hadditch, the Mitteler Rebbe in Niezhyn, and [the founder of Chassidism,] the Baal Shem Tov in Mezibuz. As it turned out, Heaven had planned for this trip to happen just two weeks after the robbery.

We arrived safely in Ukraine, B"H, after a long plane ride across the world.

After a restful night in the city of Kiev, we made the journey to Nezhin and the ohel (enclosed area) of the Mitteler Rebbe. It was a cold Ukrainian winter, and snow was all over the ground. The grave was in a field outside a city. It was dark and quiet, in a very empty cemetery. Inside the ohel, it was freezing. After 30 minutes of davening (prayer), we continued - traveling for the next 4 hours to Hadditch. We were really looking forward to the chance to daven in another holy place.

When we got to the city of Hadditch, we were surprised to see that the Alter Rebbe's ohel was completely empty, just like the Mitteler Rebbe's ohel had been. So, we began our prayers right away. We stood there together, reading aloud Tehillim (Psalms) for hours on end. It was such a special feeling, being able to connect with a Tzadik (pure, holy person) as great as the Alter Rebbe while standing next to his grave.

There's a really nice guesthouse next to the Alter Rebbe's grave in Hadditch, and that was where we were staying. So, after finishing to recite Tehillim, we headed back to the hotel in the early hours of the morning.

My wife began getting ready for bed, while I took out my laptop to write an email to my insurance company, asking for an update on whether or not they were going to give us money to replace the stolen items.

All of a sudden, at around 3:00 AM, my wife's cell phone rang.

"Hello? Mrs. Shidler?" My wife didn't recognize the voice on the other line.

"This is detective Eric from the Lakewood police," he quickly identified himself. "We think we found the gear! We're pretty sure we found your husband's camera equipment!"

She was too shocked to say anything. Overhearing, I was too! (I wondered if he knew it was 3 in the morning here - it was still only 8pm there.)

The policeman continued. "We found it in a pawn shop in Tom's River, not far from your home."

This was where the miracle got a whole lot bigger. Let me explain.

You may never have heard of a pawn shop before. It's basically a store that lends money to people, in return for something worth more money than they're taking from the shop. This way, if they don't come back in time to pay the money back, the store owner can sell whatever the person left them, making back the money they lent, plus a lot more.

"And you people are really lucky," said the detective. "We got to it just in time! If we'd found it tomorrow, the shop owner would've already sold it, and we wouldn't have been able to do a thing about it!"

"Wait! What do you mean by that?" I asked.

"We have a law here in New Jersey that, when someone comes to the police claiming they've had items stolen from them, the police have 10 days to check pawn shops to see if the missing items ended up there. But 10 days after the claim is made, the pawn shop owner is legally allowed to sell the items. So, if we'd gotten here even a day later, we wouldn't have been able to take your gear from the pawn shop. It would have belonged to the store owner."

My wife and I looked at each other, our mouths open wide in surprise. We simply couldn't believe our ears! Right after we came out of the ohel of the Alter Rebbe, after hours of davening in that holy place, after working so hard on ourselves to have full Emunah and Bitachon, and while I was in the middle of writing to the insurance company!...we were given a miracle.

The police also found the robber who broke into my car. Thank G-d, he won't be bothering anyone else in Lakewood!

* * *

Sounds like a nice miracle, right? But it doesn't end there.

The funny part is, I only realized the extent to which it was a miracle after it happened.

At the time of the theft, my wife and I had two beautiful girls. The following autumn, we were blessed thanks to G-d's kindness, with our first baby boy. We were on our way home from the hospital with our wonderful new baby when a picture popped up on my phone, along with the words "One year ago today."

In the photo, I was standing next to my wife outside the ohel of the Alter Rebbe in Hadditch, the very night we'd prayed so hard that my gear would be found.

Can you believe it? Exactly one year later, on the same date, our first baby boy came into the world. That's when I remembered the end of the letter, when the Rebbe wrote that "you will see Brachos, for you, your family, and your business."

I thought that we'd gone through a serious challenge - a real test! I was beyond excited when our stolen things were returned to us. But I never would have thought such a big blessing would come from this challenge -- that every part of the Rebbe's letter would come true in such a clear way! To me, this was such an amazing miracle, and I was so thankful!

So yeah, I guess you could say that I'm lucky enough to see miracles. But believe me - you can, too! I think if we open our eyes to what is going on around us, and we strengthen our Emunah and Bitachon and believe G-d will take care of us, we'd see His miracles all the time!

May we all be blessed with revealed miracles - many revealed miracles! And, most importantly, may we be blessed with the coming of Moshiach right now. As it says in Micha, "As in the days of your going out of Egypt, I will show you wonders."

Source: I first heard this story from R' Yosef Shidler a few years ago, when he told it to my wife and I during Melaveh Malka (The Saturday night "Fourth Meal") at our home in Tsfat during one of his visits to Israel. I begged him to write it down. Finally, he did. I spent some time editing it and sent it to him to check, and here it is "set out before you" (see Rashi's commentary on the first verse of this week's reading, Mishpatim). It's one of my longest stories yet, so I hope you too will find it worth it.

Why this week? The Torah reading of Mishpatim contains most of the civil law commandments about money and theft.

The author adds:
I try to learn "chitas"(the daily portion of Chumash, Tehillim, and Tanya, as well as the daily Rambam chapter, every single day! I believe this study fills my life with blessings. Learning Torah is truly the best thing you can do! And always remember to have Emunah and Bitachon (faith and trust in G-d) -- both when things are going well, and when things are not going so well. Always believing in G-d, and believing everything He does is for our good, opens our eyes to the miracles around us every day!

Day 125

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a press conference on Wednesday, during which he criticized the executive order signed by US President Joe Biden to impose sanctions on four residents of Judea and Samaria accused of violence against Palestinian Arabs. "This order is a very severe and inappropriate thing which harms an entire population of law-abiding citizens, among whom are soldiers who fell in the fight to eliminate Hamas. If they were using it equally- they would have imposed sanctions on Palestinians as well," the Prime Minister said when asked on the matter. https://www.israelnationalnews.com/news/384855
