This week, the Shabbos
times did not appear in Arutz 7 Israel National News. It is now about 2 or 3
minutes earlier in the northern hemisphere from last week and the opposite in
the southern hemisphere. But why do we add 18 minutes, 20, 22, 30 or 40 minutes
in Yerushalayim?
The answer is that
originally one did not have accurate time pieces like today, atomic clock links
or accurate watches and if sunset is approximate 19:47 or 48 in my area; then
at 19:30 or less a housewife should light early. One accidently misses the
time, then she can light a minute or two late but closer to Shabbos might make
her go over the time. In an emergency, a man has a few extra minutes after
sundown to fix something as long as it is not when darkness is setting in. This
is the time of the sun disappearing below the horizon - a few minutes. 99.9% of
the time such emergencies do not occur. Also it is usual for a man to leave his
home for the Mincha Prayer a few minutes after candle lighting.
Parsha Chukas
The last two Parshiyos had two things in common and they were
rebellion and death of the rebels. This week we learn more about the laws of
death and purification of Tuma (ritual impurity) of a dead person.
19:1
And the LORD spoke unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying: 2 This is the
statute of the law which the LORD hath commanded, saying: Speak unto the
children of Israel, that they bring thee a red heifer, faultless, wherein is no
blemish, and upon which never came yoke.
The people have been
wandering now for 38years in the desert many are uncircumcised and people have
died. Most are Tumay from the dead aka Tumay Mays. We are being told the way to
purify the nation from Tumay Mays.
3 And
ye shall give her unto Eleazar the priest, and she shall be brought forth
without the camp, and she shall be slain before his face.
A red heifer without
blemish or two black hairs and has never seen a yoke.
4 And
Eleazar the priest shall take of her blood with his finger, and sprinkle of her
blood toward the front of the tent of meeting seven times.
The Heifer is
slaughtered outside the camp but the blood is stirred and brought towards the
Altar.
5 And
the heifer shall be burnt in his sight; her skin, and her flesh, and her blood,
with her dung, shall be burnt.
Without the camp.
6 And
the priest shall take cedar-wood, and hyssop, and scarlet, and cast it into the
midst of the burning of the heifer. 7 Then the priest shall wash his
clothes, and he shall bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he may come into
the camp, and the priest shall be unclean until the even. 8 And he
that burns her shall wash his clothes in water, and bathe his flesh in water,
and shall be unclean until the even.
There is no logical
reason why the pure Cohain slaughtering and burning the red heifer becomes
Tumay until the evening while the same ashes purify from Tuma. It is a CHOK or
axiom law and given by HASHEM as a general orders a soldier and one cannot move
to the left or the right of it or even question the rule.
9 And
a man that is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer, and lay them up
without the camp in a clean place, and it shall be kept for the congregation of
the children of Israel for a water of sprinkling; it is a purification from
sin.
A large amount of ashes
will take hundreds of years to finish a batch for the purification of the
nation.
10 And
he that gathers the ashes of the heifer shall wash his clothes, and be unclean
until the even; and it shall be unto the children of Israel, and unto the stranger
that sojourns among them, for a statute forever.
It is not only the one
who slaughters and burns the Korban (sacrifice) but also the one who gathers
the ashes that needs purification.
11 He
that touches the dead, even any man's dead body, shall be unclean seven
days; 12 the same shall purify himself therewith on the third day and
on the seventh day, and he shall be clean; but if he purify not himself the
third day and the seventh day, he shall not be clean.
Double purification in a
well-spring of water and not an ordinary Mikvah on the 3rd and 7th
day. As evening arrives and the 8th day starts at sundown, he
becomes Tahor = pure.
13 Whosoever
touches the dead, even the body of any man that is dead, and purifies not
himself--he hath defiled the tabernacle of the LORD--that soul shall be cut off
from Israel; because the water of sprinkling was not dashed against him, he
shall be unclean; his uncleanness is yet upon him.
Going into a holy spot
in the state of Tuma Mays, one will get Kares or cut off from the Children of
Israel in this world and worse than that in the eternal life. Can you imagine
somebody suffering in the tunnels of Gaza for being a Yisrael in this life and
then missing out of his portion in the next life for getting Kares? It is
possible if one ignores the warning. However, most Rabbis agree that if
somebody is such an ignoramus and does not know the law, he is considered
Shogeg (or having an accident) and would
not get Kares.
14 This
is the law: when a man dies in a tent, every one that cometh into the tent, and
everything that is in the tent, shall be unclean seven days. 15 And
every open vessel, which hath no covering close-bound upon it, is
unclean. 16 And whosoever in the open field touches one that is slain
with a sword, or one that dies of himself, or a bone of a man, or a grave,
shall be unclean seven days.
The Sages give a Drasha
(lecture) that our Pasha starts out “This is the Torah” and then “a man dies in
a tent” that if he kills himself doing nothing else in his tent but learn Torah
that is the way to become a great Rabbi. There are some like Rabbi Chaim
Kanjievsky who were able to do this but most of us are tuned in to the world.
Even Avraham was a warrior, Yitzchak a farmer and Yacov a herdsman as well as
Dovid before he reigned as Melech on Chevron for seven years and all of Yisrael
for 33 years.
17 And
for the unclean they shall take of the ashes of the burning of the purification
from sin, and running water shall be put thereto in a vessel.
The quantity taken from
the vessel over the well-spring was miniscule.
8 And
a clean person shall take hyssop, and dip it in the water, and sprinkle it upon
the tent, and upon all the vessels, and upon the persons that were there, and
upon him that touched the bone, or the slain, or the dead, or the
grave. 19 And the clean person shall sprinkle upon the unclean on the
third day, and on the seventh day; and on the seventh day he shall purify him;
and he shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and shall be clean
at even.
Hyssop = Zaatar (Arabic)
= Marjoram. The leaves are small but the sticks can grow over a foot long like
mine that is cultivated.
20 But
the man that shall be unclean, and shall not purify himself, that soul shall be
cut off from the midst of the assembly, because he hath defiled the sanctuary
of the LORD; the water of sprinkling hath not been dashed against him: he is
unclean.
Coming into the
sanctuary or holy place when Tumay all the more so the impurity Tuma Shel Mays will
bring about excommunication (Kares) in the next world.
21 And
it shall be a perpetual statute unto them; and he that sprinkles the water of
sprinkling shall wash his clothes; and he that touches the water of sprinkling
shall be unclean until even. 22 And whatsoever the unclean person
touches shall be unclean; and the soul that touches him shall be unclean until
even.
Just like we emphasize
Shabbos Kodesh often in the Torah, the ritual purity of a human who came in
contact with a dead body, dead crawling thing or animal requires purification
in our case to the evening starting the eight day.
20:1
And the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, came into the
wilderness of Zin in the first month; and the people abode in Kadesh; and
Miriam died there, and was buried there. 2 And there was no water for
the congregation; and they assembled themselves together against Moses and
against Aaron.
There is a legend of the
“well of Miriam” that followed them around in the desert due to her waiting to
see what would happen to Moshe. A nice story perhaps her merits that the people
had water. But when she died, the people ran out of water.
3 And
the people strove with Moses, and spoke, saying: 'Would that we had perished
when our brethren perished before the LORD! 4 And why have ye brought
the assembly of the LORD into this wilderness, to die there, we and our
cattle?
This is 39years after
leaving Egypt many of the complainers if any were born free outside of Egypt.
It is like my grandparents from the days of Kaiser Franz Yosef telling me how
great things were under the Kaiser who died in 1916 CE and I was born in 1947
CE.
5 And
wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in unto this
evil place? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates;
neither is there any water to drink.'
You originally promised
a land flowing with milk and honey and everyman under his vineyard and fig
tree. Instead we are in a barren place with nothing to drink.
6 And
Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the
tent of meeting, and fell upon their faces; and the glory of the LORD appeared
unto them. 7 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 8 'Take
the rod, and assemble the congregation, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak
ye unto the rock before their eyes, that it give forth its water; and thou
shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock; so thou shalt give the
congregation and their cattle drink.'
Unlike the first
incident when Moshe was told to strike the rock, this time he would speak to
the rock and water would come out.
9 And
Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as He commanded him. 10 And
Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said
unto them: 'Hear now, ye rebels; are we to bring you forth water out of this
rock?' 11 And Moses lifted up his hand, and smote the rock with his
rod twice; and water came forth abundantly, and the congregation drank, and
their cattle.
He began speaking to the
rock and the area became damp. Then he talked and the slightest trickle
occurred. Time went on and he became frustrated and under the pressure of the
congregation struck the rock twice.
12 And
the LORD said unto Moses and Aaron: 'Because ye believed not in Me, to sanctify
Me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this
assembly into the land which I have given them.' 13 These are the
waters of Meribah, where the children of Israel strove with the LORD, and He
was sanctified in them.
Because you, Moshe (and
Aaron) strove with me like the people and did not follow down to the letter my
word, you will not enter the land of Yisrael.
14 And
Moses sent messengers from Kadesh unto the king of Edom: 'Thus saith thy
brother Israel: Thou know all the travail that hath befallen
us; 15 how our fathers went down into Egypt, and we dwelt in Egypt a
long time; and the Egyptians dealt ill with us, and our
fathers; 16 and when we cried unto the LORD, He heard our voice, and
sent an angel, and brought us forth out of Egypt; and, behold, we are in
Kadesh, a city in the uttermost of thy border. 17 Let us pass, I pray
thee, through thy land; we will not pass through field or through vineyard,
neither will we drink of the water of the wells; we will go along the king's
highway, we will not turn aside to the right hand nor to the left, until we
have passed thy border.'
Kadesh is an area east
of the modern Philadelphia Route and going towards the Canyon and Spring of
Avdat and Nahal Zin and Paran. So even though Edom starts around Aqaba on the
Red Sea, the mountains and tribes must have continued to closer towards the
Dead Sea.
20 And
he said: 'Thou shalt not pass through.' And Edom came out against him with much
people, and with a strong hand. 21 Thus Edom refused to give Israel
passage through his border; wherefore Israel turned away from him.
22 And they journeyed from Kadesh; and the children of Israel, even the
whole congregation, came unto mount Hor.
Yacov and Esav made
peace, let us pass by in peace. So they made a detour around Esav for the sake
and memory of our forefather Yitzchak who loved both his children.
23 And
the LORD spoke unto Moses and Aaron in mount Hor, by the border of the land of
Edom, saying: 24 'Aaron shall be gathered unto his people; for he
shall not enter into the land which I have given unto the children of Israel,
because ye rebelled against My word at the waters of Meribah. 25 Take
Aaron and Eleazar his son, and bring them up unto mount Hor. 26 And
strip Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son; and Aaron shall
be gathered unto his people, and shall die there.' 27 And Moses did
as the LORD commanded; and they went up into mount Hor in the sight of all the
congregation. 28 And Moses stripped Aaron of his garments, and put
them upon Eleazar his son; and Aaron died there in the top of the mount; and
Moses and Eleazar came down from the mount.
Rosh Chodesh Menachem Av
and Aaron at Har Hor aged 123 is gathered to his people.
29 And
when all the congregation saw that Aaron was dead, they wept for Aaron thirty
days, even all the house of Israel.
What did they see? The
clouds of glory lifted and the hot sun baked down on them. All of Yisrael
mourned as Aaron made Shalom Beis between husbands and wives.
21:1
And the Canaanite, the king of Arad, who dwelt in the South, heard tell that
Israel came by the way of Atharim; and he fought against Israel, and took some
of them captive. 2 And Israel vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said:
'If Thou wilt indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly
destroy their cities.'
Actually he was Amalek
but dressed and acted like a Canaan King.
3 And
the LORD hearkened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and
they utterly destroyed them and their cities; and the name of the place was
called Hormah.
The fortification can be
seen today called Tel Arad about a 5 minute drive from the city westwards.
4 And
they journeyed from mount Hor by the way to the Red Sea, to compass the land of
Edom; and the soul of the people became impatient because of the
way. 5 And the people spoke against God, and against Moses:
'Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for
there is no bread, and there is no water; and our soul loathes this light
bread.'
Perkei Avos asks “Who is
rich? And the answer is “the man who happy (or satisfied) with his lot”.
6 And
the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and
much people of Israel died. 7 And the people came to Moses, and said:
'We have sinned, because we have spoken against the LORD, and against thee;
pray unto the LORD, that He take away the serpents from us.' And Moses prayed
for the people. 8 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Make thee a fiery
serpent, and set it upon a pole; and it shall come to pass, that every one that
is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.'
Again a rebellion HASHEM
sent poisonous snakes.
9 And
Moses made a serpent of brass, and set it upon the pole; and it came to pass,
that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he looked unto the serpent of brass,
he lived.
The Gemara asks: “Does a
brass serpent heal or cures a bite? Rather, when a man turns his eyes upwards
towards heaven, he is saved.”
10 And
the children of Israel journeyed, and pitched in Oboth. 11 And they
journeyed from Oboth, and pitched at Ije-abarim, in the wilderness which is in
front of Moab, toward the sun-rising. 12 From thence they journeyed,
and pitched in the valley of Zered. 13 From thence they journeyed,
and pitched on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness, that
cometh out of the border of the Amorites.--For Arnon is the border of Moab,
between Moab and the Amorites; 14 wherefore it is said in the book of
the Wars of the LORD: Vaheb in Suphah, and the valleys of
Arnon, 15 And the slope of the valleys that inclines toward the seat
of Ar, and leans upon the border of Moab.-- 16 And from thence to
Beer; that is the well whereof the LORD said unto Moses: 'Gather the people
together, and I will give them water.'
If you google Arnon you
will see a waterfall of water many inches in circumference and enough to supply
millions of people and animals.
17 Then
sang Israel this song: Spring up, O well--sing ye unto it-- 18 The
well, which the princes dug, which the nobles of the people delved, with the
sceptre, and with their staves. And from the wilderness to
Mattanah; 19 and from Mattanah to Nahaliel; and from Nahaliel to
Bamoth; 20 and from Bamoth to the valley that is in the field of
Moab, by the top of Pisgah, which looks down upon the desert. 21 And
Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites,
saying: 22 'Let me pass through thy land; we will not turn aside into
field, or into vineyard; we will not drink of the water of the wells; we will
go by the king's highway, until we have passed thy border.'
The same story as with
Esav but Sihon is not from Yitzchak and have to save them. But rather now is
the time to go to war and take what you want from them.
23 And
Sihon would not suffer Israel to pass through his border; but Sihon gathered
all his people together, and went out against Israel into the wilderness, and
came to Jahaz; and he fought against Israel. 24 And Israel smote him
with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from the Arnon unto the
Jabbok, even unto the children of Ammon; for the border of the children of
Ammon was strong.
Sihon took land from
Ammon by conquest and now we are conquering it from him.
25 And
Israel took all these cities; and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the
Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all the towns thereof. 26 For Heshbon
was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the
former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of his hand, even unto the
Arnon. 27 Wherefore they that speak in parables say: Come ye to
Heshbon! let the city of Sihon be built and established! 28 For a
fire is gone out of Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon; it hath devoured
Ar of Moab, the lords of the high places of Arnon. 29 Woe to thee,
Moab! thou art undone, O people of Chemosh; he hath given his sons as
fugitives, and his daughters into captivity, unto Sihon king of the
Amorites. 30 We have shot at them--Heshbon is perished--even unto
Dibon, and we have laid waste even unto Nophah, which reached unto
Medeba.
Making fun of the idolatry
after the conquest.
31 Thus
Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites. 32 And Moses sent to spy
out Jazer, and they took the towns thereof, and drove out the Amorites that
were there. 33 And they turned and went up by the way of Bashan; and
Og the king of Bashan went out against them, he and all his people, to battle
at Edrei. 34 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Fear him not; for I have
delivered him into thy hand, and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt
do to him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon.'
He was according to the Midrash
a giant who clung on to Noach’s Teva and survived the great deluge. Since the
flood was in 1656 and people then lived 900years it was very possible in 2487
for him to be alive. Only after the flood the life span was cut to 120years.
35 So
they smote him, and his sons, and all his people, until there was none left him
remaining; and they possessed his land.
He was a giant of a man
but fell by the sword and his people were defeated.
22:1 And the children of Israel journeyed, and pitched in the
plains of Moab beyond the Jordan at Jericho.
For months the Bnei
Yisrael will be in this area. It is their staging area for conquering Eretz
Yisrael it has plenty of grass for grazing and water to drink. They will
eventually pass over the Yarden near where the modern bridge is a bit south
east of Yericho.
Milestone: The Rav of Beer Sheva – Yehuda Deri, 66.
by R. Pauli
About a month ago, Rav
Arieh Deri was doing wheeling and dealing to have his brother, Yehuda become
the Chief Sephardi Rabbi of Israel.
Deri was born in Meknès, Morocco, and immigrated to Israel with
his family in 1968. The family, which was middle class, immersed in Francophone
culture and financially comfortable in Morocco, settled in Bat Yam. Yehuda and
Aryeh’s parents were not Haredi, but they feared their boys would be led astray
by juvenile delinquents living in their neighborhood and therefore enrolled
both boys in a Haredi boarding school in Hadera, leading them to adopt the
lifestyle.
Rabbi Yehuda Deri was
in a different league from most Rabbis. The Shulchan Aruch that most people
have including myself consists of ten volumes. Three Orach Chaim, three Yerah
Deah, two in one of Eben HaEzer and three of Choshen Mishpat. Rabbi Yehuda Deri
compiled a special version of the Shulchan Aruch.
I don’t have his Orach
Chaim which consists of many books for my own purposes the regular Shulchan
Aruch and Mishnah Berurah is enough. Yerah Deah is nine volumes, Eben Ezer becomes six volumes and
Choshen Mishpat is 10 volumes.
Rabbi Deri wrote dozens of books on Jewish law
and theology including Imrei Yehuda, Mishnat Ezer, Chagim Uzmanim, V'zot
Hatorah, and Netivei Horaah. Yerah
He was one of the people whom you
could call a Rabbi’s Rabbi. These are rare men when a Rabbi get stuck, he asks
a question and generally within a short time gets an answer. Rabbi Shlomo
Mimran Shlita has a wonderful memory and when we learn together I often say
that I forgot that source, he rattles it off like a computer search or better.
That was Rabbi Deri whom both Rabbi Mimran and I had the greatest respect for
as the standard printed Shulchan Aruch has many errors and Rabbi Mimran has
notes here and there on the side and in the commentaries.
Avraham Dahan stops second RPG in the nick of time.
English Rachamim Pauli
Seven years ago
Avraham, 12, was a boy singing prodigy. He had perfect pitch and was on TV with
Sarit Hadad as his teacher. (Menashe was 10 at the time but I wanted him for
Chazanut and not popular songs).
Seven years have
passed and Avraham is 21 in a Golani Brigade Unit. He receives a call from a
worried Sarit Hadad before her pupil goes into Gaza. In the fighting, Avraham
and his APC is hit by an RPG all of them are wounded. At first, he saw a white
flash and thought that he was dead but quickly wakes up and looks in the
direction of the RPG shooter who is reloading. He grabs his rifle and shoots
automatic at the terrorists. It takes a while for all to be patched up. But six
of his platoon buddies are lost in Gaza and he is dedicating a new song for
them.
It was not clear if
his fighting days are over or he is on medical leave entertaining troops now
with song and the comedian Chanoch Daum.
Sergeant Major Yannai Shlunsky wounded twice by Rabbi
Rachamim Pauli
It is not uncommon to
have soldiers wounded in battle like Elchanon G., who sits in my row in Schul,
be wounded and return to battle. Thus Yannai did the same. One feels part of
the nation and his people on the front line.
After Yannai was
wounded the second time, he needed a long recovery. The first thing that
happened to him after his operation was a visit by the social worker to prevent
PTSD. She visited him and comforted him and told him that she would be back
again next week. It did not take that long for a friendship-relationship for
Yannai and her to develop.
He has a long way to
go physically and mentally has to learn again to concentrate so that he can
continue his studies in oceanographic studies.
It happened
on the BQE (1) by Rabbi Yerachmiel Tilles
https://ascentofsafed.com/Stories/Stories/5784/1387-44.html
A few decades ago, Reb Leib-Ber
(Barry) Silberschlag then a young man with two kids, was working at
B&H photo in Manhattan. During that time, he was offered the opportunity to
move from NYC and buy the 'Lax and Mandel Bakery' in Cleveland.
The kosher bakery was well-known and popular since its founding in 1956;
it posed to be very lucrative for the new owner. Still, Leib-Ber was a faithful
chasid and didn't want to close the deal without the blessing of his Rebbe.
However, the Sadigora Rebbe was not available that week, so he decided to go
to the Lubavitcher Rebbe in the Crown Heights district of Brooklyn.
He elected to do so on a Sunday morning when the Rebbe was known to give a
dollar bill [for charity] and a blessing to whomever was waiting on line. He
took along his wife and two children for the experience, but it turned out to
be difficult when they had to stand in line that Sunday for nearly five hours.
As Leib-Ber got close enough to see what was going on, he realized that
his time with the Rebbe would be maybe a few seconds. This reminded him of a
story in a Midrash of a King who granted everyone in the country the opportunity
to request one thing. One clever person realized that he would not have enough
time with the king so he posed his request as a question that the king needed
to answer.
Leib-Ber decided he would do the same. When he came before the Rebbe, he
asked, "Rebbe, Should I buy the Lax and Mandel Bakery in Cleveland?"
The Rebbe looked at him directly and said, "Why are you asking me?
Ask a Rav in Cleveland." And with that the family was
pushed past he Rebbe to the exit. Reb Leib Ber's wife was devastated. They
stood in line for five hours for that!? Reb Leib Ber, though, was not
perturbed. He suggested to his wife to have emunas tzadikim -
faith in the Righteous.
The family decided that instead of going straight home to Boro Park, they
would visit their bubby [grandmother] who lived in Williamsburg - a short drive
from Crown Heights. They spent an hour or so there and headed towards home.
Their route included driving on the BQE [Brooklyn-Queens Expressway] that
connects Williamsburg to Boro Park. Very often, people looking to get from one
Jewish enclave to the other would stand at the entrance to the highway and hope
that people would offer them rides. Seeing an older couple standing near the
entrance, Leib-Ber asked his wife if it would be ok to offer them a lift. She
agreed, moving to the back to allow the older gentleman the front seat.
After everyone was settled, they introduced themselves. Their male
passenger was the Clevelander Rebbe (!) visiting family in New York [see
Appendix A]. Leib-Ber was astounded. He explained to the Rebbe what had
happened with the Lubavitcher Rebbe just a short time before.
The Rebbe's wife interrupted and asked, "Which bakery?"
"Lax and Mandel" the young man replied, The Rebbetzin responded,
"Lax and Mandel is owned by my cousin. Let me tell you why it's for sale.
My cousin is an invalid and can't manage the bakery. The bakers are robbing him
blind. The business is good, but it's not making any money. Unless you're a
baker, don't buy it." [see Appendix B]
Reb Leib Ber told me that he was very impressed with the Rebbe's vision
and that he had felt the whole time that the Rebbe was not just brushing his
request aside.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Why this week: Monday night-Tuesday is the 30th yahrzeit of the Lubavitcher Rebbe.
Appendix A: The Clevelander Chasidic dynasty was founded by Rabbi
Meir Leifer, of the Nadvorna Chasidic Dynasty, when he moved to the USA in
1922, and settled in Cleveland. Previously, in Europe, he had lived in
Budapest, Hungary, where he led a large following. In 1934 he moved to
Williamsburg. When he died in 1941, he was succeeded by his
son-in-law, Rabbi Usher-Mordechai Rosenbaum. After the 2nd Clevelander
passed away in 1991, he was succeeded by his son, the 3rd and current
Clevelander Rebbe, Rabbi Yehoshua-Heshel Rosenbaum. [excerpted from Wiki].
Therefore, either one of the latter two Rebbes must be the Clevelander Rebbe of
the above story, depending on whether it took place before or after 1991.
Appendix B: Shimon Lax and Burt Mandel founded the Lax and Mandel Bakery in 1956 on
South Taylor Road in the Cedar-Taylor neighborhood of Cleveland Heights. It
became a fixture in the Cleveland Jewish community for nearly 60 years, until
it closed in May 2015 at its then current location, 14439 Cedar Road in South
Euclid. Barak Ben-Tor, the last owner, had hoped to sell it, but was unable to.
In June 2015, he put everything in it up for auction, including the recipes.
When the suggestion was first
made in 1982 that Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu should run for the position
of chief rabbi of Israel, his wife objected.
Rabbanit Tzviyah
Eliyahu felt it was difficult enough as it was for him to cope with the
crowds who gathered on their doorstep each morning with questions, let alone
the unceasing telephone calls at all hours of the day and night. Making matters
more complicated, she knew that Rabbi Eliyahu wouldn't turn anyone away, no
matter what he was in the middle of doing. No matter how simple, small or
trivial a question was, Rabbi Eliyahu would drop whatever he was involved in to
try and answer it.
Rabbanit Eliyahu just didn't know
how her husband would manage to keep up with the even greater demands of the
position - and she feared that he would never have a free moment again.
When Rabbi Eliyahu heard that his
wife was opposed to his appointment, he immediately rejected the idea to those
who were suggesting it.
But then Rabbanit Eliyahu again
contemplated the proposal, eventually concluding that helping the Jewish people
was an essential role of theirs. She felt that if the people were advocating
her husband's candidacy so strongly, she wouldn't stand in their way.
Rabbi Eliyahu finally agreed and
then nearly backed out again shortly thereafter, on the advice of his wife, who
had once more fallen into doubt, beset by reservations and uncertainty. The
situation was especially complicated, as right after his candidacy was
announced, all kinds of people began coming out of the woodwork with memories
of the rabbi's time in prison and so on.
The Rabbanit worried about him
being in a position that would put him under so much public scrutiny, in
addition to the huge toll it would take on his time and energy.
One Erev Shabbat, Rabbanit
Tzviyah poured out her heart to her husband, sharing all her hesitations. On
Motzei Shabbat, she started receiving phone calls. The first was from
the Baba Sali, who told her that Rabbi Eliyahu's candidacy was from
Heaven and she shouldn't fight it.
The Gerrer Rebbe [1]
called next, saying the same thing. A short time later, an emissary of
the Lubavitcher Rebbe arrived with the same message: "In Heaven
they chose you."
She believed that these messages
where truly Heaven sent. It was as if those righteous men had sensed the doubts
plaguing her heart and then reached out to reassure her - each using the exact
same wording to encourage and support her.
The following Monday, Rabbanit
Eliyahu went to visit Rabbi Yitzhak Kaduri [2] to ask him a question
about a personal matter.
He asked her why she was asking
him when she could ask her own husband.
She responded that while her
husband was a rabbi who gave halachic (Jewish law) rulings, she was seeking a
kabbalist to give her a blessing.
Rabbi Kaduri laughed, saying that
her husband was also a kabbalist and that he could also give blessings that
would be fulfilled.
He added, "And all the
Kabbalah I know I learned from Rabbi Eliyahu's father. So how could it be that
he doesn't have the power to give blessings?"
He then asked her if the three
rabbis had sent their messages to her on Motzei Shabbat. When she confirmed
that they had, Rabbi Kaduri nodded, affirming their words.
Rabbanit Eliyahu recalled
wondering how he could know all of this, as she couldn't imagine the rabbis
calling and telling him what they had done and said - but she didn't ask. She
just knew that all her objections had vanished. She could - and would - support
her husband as chief rabbi of Israel.
After her husband's passing, she
recalled this story.
"When I think back to all
that happened during that time, I wonder what I was thinking. How could I not
have seen the greatness of my husband in those days? He managed to conceal
himself even from me. And perhaps even today, even after so many stories have
been shared, he's still concealing himself?
2]
A renowned and widely sought-after kabbalist, originally from Baghdad. His birth
year is disputed, usually estimated between 1898 and 1902.He passed away in
Jerusalem in 2006.
Biographical
notes (in order of appearance):
Rabbi Mordechai-Tzemach Eliyahu [of blessed memory: 5689 - 25 Sivan 5770
(1929-2010)], son of Rabbi Salman Eliyahu, a leader of the Sephardic kabbalists
in Jerusalem, served as the Chief Sephardic Rabbi of Israel from 1983 to 1993.
Rabbi Mordechai was a noted sage in all areas of Torah study, as well as a
significant kabbalist, and was considered to be one of the leading authorities
on Jewish law in Israel. His son, Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu, who is currently the
popular Chief Rabbi of Tsfat, was also the main force in compiling the 5-volume
Hebrew set from which the English book cited above was taken.
Rabbi
Yisrael Abuhatzira [Rosh Hashanah 1899 - 4 Shvat 1984] or Baba Sali, as he
was affectionately known throughout the Jewish world, was born in Tafillalt,
Morocco to one of Jewry's most illustrious families. From a young age he was
renowned as a sage, leader, miracle maker and master kabbalist. In 1964 he
moved to Eretz Yisrael, eventually settling in 1970 in the Southern development
town, Netivot, where thousands of followers and admirers from all over the
world and across the Jewish spectrum streamed to see him and ask his blessing.
Even today his burial place there is a pilgrimage site for tens of thousands of
visitors. Since his passing, several biographies have been published, including
two in English.
Rabbi Simcha-Bunim Alter (1898- 7 Tammuz 1992),
also known as the Lev Simcha after the works he authored, became the fifth Gerrer Rebbe in
1977 at age 79, succeeding his brother, known as the Beit Yisrael. During the
reign of his brother he was known to have been a successful astute businessman,
as well as heavily involved in the leadership of Agudas Yisrael, the strictly
religious political party. During the time of his leadership, the number of Ger
Chasidism in the State of Israel increased greatly. A biography of him has been
published in English, called "From The Summit. The seventh and current
Gerrer Rebbe, Rabbi Yaakov Alter, is his nephew.
Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the Lubavitcher
Rebbe
[11 Nissan 5662 - 3 Tammuz 5754 (April 1902 - June 1994)], became the seventh
Rebbe of the Chabad dynasty after his father-in-law's passing on 10 Shvat 5710
(1950) He is widely acknowledged as the greatest Jewish leader of the second
half of the 20th century. Although a dominant scholar in both the revealed and
hidden aspects of Torah and fluent in many languages and scientific subjects,
the Rebbe is best known for his extraordinary love and concern for every Jew on
the planet. His emissaries around the globe dedicated to strengthening Judaism
number in the thousands. Hundreds of volumes of his teachings have been
printed, as well as dozens of English renditions.
Rabbi Yitzhak
Kaduri [1898 (1902?) - 2006] was born in Baghdad. At age 17, he already
knew the Talmud and its rulings by heart, and he was able to present his
teachings before the greatest scholars of the time. In 1924, he made Aliyah to
Israel and studied in the Porat Yosef Yeshiva in the Old City of Jerusalem.
After the 1948 War of Independence. Rabbi Kaduri switched to the Beit El
Kabbalists' Yeshiva. He resided in the Bucharim neighborhood of Jerusalem and
earned his living as a bookbinder. Later, he became head of the Nachalat
Yitzhak Kabbalists' Yeshiva and High Court. Rabbi Kaduri excelled in his
modesty, simplicity, love of people and in his readiness to reach out to and
bless any person, whether secular or religious, laborer or business man, child
or elderly. He would receive the thousands that came to him equally, with
warmth and love. Hundreds of thousands attended his funeral and many thousands
continue to pray at his graveside, in Jerusalem. [Excerpted from
Diane Bederman came out with an
Ed-Op on “Queers for Palestine”. I did not post the reference as it had
pictures of a recent events that no Orthodox Rabbi could post including a
hanging in a Muslim Country.
In Short: …
Now, if these Queers for Palestine went to Muslim countries,
they would probably be murdered – not disparaged, or demeaned or ignored. Nope.
Murdered. And yet, these Queers for Palestine stand with those who scream
INTIFADA – death to Israel. …
Homosexual acts are punishable by death
in Saudi Arabia. In fact, for married men or non-Muslim men who engage sodomy
with Muslims, the penalty is stoning, according to the Washington Post. And
though the Middle Eastern country has no explicit anti-transgender laws, it
adheres to a strict interpretation of Sharia law and has arrested numerous
people on cross-dressing charges. …
BLM and Islam: … It’s estimated that between 650 CE and 1900,
10 to 20 million people were enslaved by Arab slave traders. Others suggest
more than 20
million enslaved Africans had been delivered through the trans-Sahara route
into the Islamic world. At the beginning of 10th century the Calipha in Baghdad
had 7,000 black eunuchs
and 4,000 white eunuchs
Letter from Dr. Harry: Re: Lack of combat supplies
I
know for a fact and personally how soldiers and police are denied life-saving
equipment. When I moved to Safed a number of year ago, I brought a
dozen bullet proof vests that were past date of use by the Airforce, but still
functional. The officers of a Safed were very grateful as they had none.
This reminds me of a statement by Rumsfeld that solders fight with what
they are given, not what they necessarily need. I turned down a dinner
with him thereafter, and told him to use the money for my meal for soldiers,
and to "F… off." I am sure Hezbollah and Hamas gets what they
need from Iran and other Arab countries, while the IDF walks around in old
leather boots that look more than fifty years old. The leaders of Israel
are no better than the USA leaders who sent soldiers to fight in the Mideast
and Viet Nam with S… plastic M16s that jammed, while the enemy had AK-47
rifles that functioned perfectly, and shot better bullets.
Perhaps
Biden could become Prime Minister of Israel, he could be no worse than what we
have now.
