The Parsha is not on
vacation and neither is the Holy One Blessed be HE, but last week my head was
nodding off as I was writing so this week I am working out less in the gym and
relaxing from my home-repair project.
Parsha Lech Lecha Part 1
One of the trials of
Avraham is at the age of 75 he was told to turn his life around. He lived in
Haran with his father and one brother. Now he was told to start a new life in a
strange place. I am 77years old and happily settled. The Midrash says that
people actually did not age like we do today until Avraham and Yitzchak looked
like wins and he prayed for a symbol of being elderly. Careful what you pray
for.
12:1
Now the LORD said unto Abram: 'Get thee out of thy country, and from thy
kindred, and from thy father's house, unto the land that I will show
thee.
Avraham was three others
say 40 when he discovered HASHEM from the house of an idol maker. How is it
that Terach seven generations after Shem with Noach, Shem, Ever still alive
could degenerate to be an idol worshipper?
2 And
I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name
great; and be thou a blessing. 3 And I will bless them that bless
thee, and him that curses thee will I curse; and in thee shall all the families
of the earth be blessed.'
A person traveling
usually exhausts himself and does not have time to stay long enough in one
place to be blessed and make blessings to others or get a reputation, but Avram
is blessed above other nations.
4 So
Abram went, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him; and Abram
was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran. 5 And
Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their substance
that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they
went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they
came. 6 And Abram passed through the land unto the place of Shechem,
unto the terebinth of Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the land.
This is a particularly
large tree that started growing a few hundred years ago right after the flood.
7 And
the LORD appeared unto Abram, and said: 'Unto thy seed will I give this land';
and he built there an altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto him.
You will have seed whom
will inherit the land from you. In our modern way of thinking, a 75year old
with a wife who is 65years old woman do
not normally don’t have pregnancy and a child/children. Avram was promised by
HASHEM but the promise would be made and kept by HASHEM.
8 And
he removed from thence unto the mountain on the east of Beth-el, and pitched
his tent, having Beth-el on the west, and Ai on the east; and he built there an
altar unto the LORD, and called upon the name of the LORD. 9 And
Abram journeyed, going on still toward the South.
Avram prayed like most
people with an altar and sacrifice.
10 And
there was a famine in the land; and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn
there; for the famine was sore in the land. 11 And it came to pass,
when he was come near to enter into Egypt, that he said unto Sarai his wife:
'Behold now, I know that thou art a fair woman to look upon. 12 And
it will come to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they will say:
This is his wife; and they will kill me, but thee they will keep alive.
Up until now he did not
know that Sara was beautiful? Rather he was modest and did not want her beauty
going into her head. But now they were about to enter Egypt that had a
reputation for doing what they want to do with people, but not as bad as Sodom.
One must remember that up until 200years ago in Eastern Europe, the lord of the
Estate or Town had the right to do what he wanted to the bride on a wedding
night.
13 Say,
I pray thee, thou art my sister; that it may be well with me for thy sake, and
that my soul may live because of thee.'
Saddam Hussein had a reputation for looking at the wives of his
generals at State Dinners and killing them if he wanted the woman so as not to
be an adulterer. The general would divorce his wife for this. This seems to be
warped thinking of the laws of Noach. A Ben Noach is forbidden to commit
adultery and also murder. If one reads the Asera Dibros, murder takes priority
over adultery.
14 And
it came to pass, that, when Abram was come into Egypt, the Egyptians beheld the
woman that she was very fair.
Avraham hid her in a box, but customs and immigration opened up
the box.
15 And
the princes of Pharaoh saw her, and praised her to Pharaoh; and the woman was
taken into Pharaoh's house. 16 And he dealt well with Abram for her
sake; and he had sheep, and oxen, and he-asses, and men-servants, and
maid-servants, and she-asses, and camels. 17 And the LORD plagued Pharaoh
and his house with great plagues because of Sarai Abram's wife.
All the women in Egypt
could not give birth and some advisor or prophet to Pharaoh or possibly G-D in
a dream revealed the truth and the reason for this plague.
18 And
Pharaoh called Abram, and said: 'What is this that thou hast done unto me? why
didst thou not tell me that she was thy wife? 19 Why said thou: She
is my sister? so that I took her to be my wife; now therefore behold thy wife,
take her, and go thy way.'
And seeing what had
happened gave Avram the equivalent to hush money.
20 And
Pharaoh gave men charge concerning him; and they brought him on the way, and
his wife, and all that he had.
This man is a prophet of
the Living G-D and therefore holy and protected.
13:1
And Abram went up out of Egypt, he, and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot
with him, into the South. 2 And Abram was very rich in cattle, in
silver, and in gold. 3 And he went on his journeys from the South
even to Beth-el, unto the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between
Beth-el and Ai; 4 unto the place of the altar, which he had made
there at the first; and Abram called there on the name of the LORD.
There is a lesson we learn from this. Unlike somebody traveling and
exploring new restaurants and hotels; a person who travels back and forth on a
route should go back to stay at the same place that hosted him. In Avram’s
case, the same sacrifice and prayer area.
5 And
Lot also, who went with Abram, had flocks, and herds, and
tents. 6 And the land was not able to bear them, that they might
dwell together; for their substance was great, so that they could not dwell
together.
Their flocks and herds were so numerous that they could not graze
together but over very wide areas.
7 And
there was a strife between the herdsmen of Abram's cattle and the herdsmen of
Lot's cattle. And the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelt then in the land.
There appears to me to be a relationship between the laws of
Canaan for grazing near the highways and why the two could not expand their
grazing together. Sort of an environmental grazing protection law.
8 And
Abram said unto Lot: 'Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee,
and between my herdsmen and thy herdsmen; for we are brethren.
Let us keep Shalom
within our family.
9 Is
not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me; if thou
wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou take the right
hand, then I will go to the left.'
If one looks at Eretz
Yisrael today with a population of close to 10,000,000; one will see that
certain cities on the coastal plain and centers like Yerushalayim, Beer Sheva
and Modiin have populations and the rest of the land is sparsely populated.
10 And
Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of the Jordan, that it was
well watered everywhere, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, like the
garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou go unto Zoar.
We shall see later on
that Lot had lived in Sodom previously and was attracted to the area.
11 So
Lot chose him all the plain of the Jordan; and Lot journeyed east; and they
separated themselves the one from the other.
If I were to go by today’s
springs in the desert, Sodom could have been on the eastern bank of the Dead Sea.
12 Abram
dwelt in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelt in the cities of the Plain, and
moved his tent as far as Sodom.
So they parted ways and the two daughters of Lot would not have
the opportunity to marry with Avram.
13 Now
the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners against the LORD exceedingly.
Their deed and behavior
are specified in the Midrash but not in the Chumash.
14 And
the LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him: 'Lift up now
thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art, northward and southward and
eastward and westward; 15 for all the land which thou see, to thee
will I give it, and to thy seed forever. 16 And I will make thy seed
as the dust of the earth; so that if a man can number the dust of the earth,
then shall thy seed also be numbered.
Childless Avram is given
a blessing and a promise to have children that will inherit the land.
17 Arise,
walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for unto
thee will I give it.'
The area that you shall
walk length and breadth shall be for you and your seed.
18 And
Abram moved his tent, and came and dwelt by the terebinths of Mamre, which are
in Hebron, and built there an altar unto the LORD.
The woods of Mamre seem
to be a rest area on the way. It was also a place clean enough spiritually to
make an altar (Mizbayach) G-D to give thanks for the blessing.
14:1
And it came to pass in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king
of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of
Goiim, 2 that they made war with Bera king of Sodom, and with Birsha
king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the
king of Bela--the same is Zoar.
This war seems to have occurred
when Avram was 70years old even though the story is placed here in the Chumash.
3 All
these came as allies unto the vale of Siddim--the same is the Salt
Sea. 4 Twelve years they served Chedorlaomer, and in the thirteenth
year they rebelled. 5 And in the fourteenth year came Chedorlaomer
and the kings that were with him, and smote the Rephaim in Ashteroth-karnaim,
and the Zuzim in Ham, and the Emim in Shaveh-kiriathaim, 6 and the
Horites in their mount Seir, unto El-paran, which is by the
wilderness. 7 And they turned back, and came to En-mishpat--the same
is Kadesh--and smote all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites,
that dwelt in Hazazon-tamar. 8 And there went out the king of Sodom,
and the king of Gomorrah, and the king of Admah, and the king of Zeboiim, and
the king of Bela--the same is Zoar; and they set the battle in array against
them in the vale of Siddim; 9 against Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and
Tidal king of Goiim, and Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar;
four kings against the five. 10 Now the vale of Siddim was full of
slime pits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and they fell there, and
they that remained fled to the mountain. 11 And they took all the
goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their victuals, and went their way.
This is a hint of Gog
and Magog aka Armageddon which appears four new kings or lands for the future.
It looks to me like Russia, China, Iran and N. Korea but that is an educated
guess and not direct prophecy.
Clock change and a
hectic week puts me slightly short of finishing with quality so I will continue
with Part 2 next week.
12 And
they took Lot, Abram's brother's son, who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and
departed. …
15 And
God said unto Abraham: 'As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name
Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be. 16 And I will bless her, and
moreover I will give thee a son of her; yea, I will bless her, and she shall be
a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall be of her.' 17 Then
Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart: 'Shall a child
be born unto him that is a hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety
years old, bear?'
He believed and laughed
with joy.
18 And
Abraham said unto God: 'Oh that Ishmael might live before Thee!'
Despite the short
comings, Avram loved Yishmael.
19 And
God said: 'Nay, but Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son; and thou shalt call
his name Isaac; and I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting
covenant for his seed after him. 20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard
thee; behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply
him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great
nation. 21 But My covenant will I establish with Isaac, whom Sarah
shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year.' 22 And He
left off talking with him, and God went up from Abraham.
You will have a son named
Yitzchak will expand on this next week.
23 And
Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all that were born in his house, and all that
were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham’s house, and
circumcised the flesh of their foreskin in the selfsame day, as God had said
unto him. 24 And Abraham was ninety years old and nine, when he was
circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. 25 And Ishmael his son was
thirteen years old, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. 26 In
the selfsame day was Abraham circumcised, and Ishmael his son. 27 And
all the men of his house, those born in the house, and those bought with money
of a foreigner, were circumcised with him.
Avraham and Yishmael were circumcised. Because Yishmael
circumcised himself at the age of 13 willingly, his children would be able to
rule the Temple Mount for 1300 years.
The Donkey
and The Farmer and Saving two Soldiers
I am friendly with a reserve officer who has grandchildren.
He likes to tell a story about a farmer who had a donkey he loved. He let the
donkey roam free around the farm. The donkey did not have a reputation for
being one of the smartest creations of HASHEM and one day fell into a ditch.
The ditch was deep and the donkey was OK but the farmer had to get down to feed
him. So the farmer shoveled dirt into the ditch so his latter could reach the
donkey. Each time the donkey shook off the dirt and climbed higher and higher
until it got out of the ditch.
Now there were two soldiers driving a heavy armor protected
vehicle in Lebanon, they were searching an area where there were suspected
tunnel shafts so they were not racing. Suddenly, the ground gives way under
their vehicle. They had fallen sideways into a tunnel wide enough to capture
their vehicle with them inside but it was six meters deep or just shy of 20feet
deep.
Because the soldiers had fallen on their side, they could
not be extracted via the top of their cabin. Miraculously, the soldiers were
not even moderately injured. Now the Engineering Officer had to figure how to
get the two soldiers and the vehicle out of the ditch. He poured in some dirt
in front of the vehicle and the driver press ignition and the vehicle went up
the dirt. Then he pour more dirt behind until the vehicle was about 4meters or
less deep or about 13 feet down. With the help of cranes, the vehicle was
lifted up to the surface.
The Officer brought in tons upon tons of explosives as this
tunnel, 1.6 km in length, was not in the sands of Gaza but embedded in the
rocks of Lebanon. He then called up a geologist to measure the size of the
explosion and it was 3.6 on the Richter Scale triggering an Earthquake alert.
Second story:
The same engineering division came under fire from
Hezballah that had not fled the south. As Nasrallah joked, come in we are
waiting for you. They requested and received Tank fire, but an RPG knocked out
the tank and injured a few of our young men.
A second tank came in and also came under fire but quickly
outshot and gunned the terrorists. The officer and his men got last weekend
off. He came home and Benched (Blessed in Yiddish) the Gomel Prayer. When he
was in Gaza he had not done so, just to let you know how much more dangerous it
is in Lebanon.
I was close to fighting in 1977 aka 5737 and even encountered
a few injured, but never got that close. Call me lucky or blessed by HASHEM.
HASHEM did some wonders
for me this week and I have to thank HIM and will write about it in a few
weeks.
Two Rebbes Two Prisoners … and an Angel by R. Y.

G-d appeared to Avraham Avinu ("our
patriarch") and said to him, "Go forth from your land, from your
birthplace." Rashi [the primary commentator] explains the
verse, "For your pleasure, for your own good." The question is well
known: what pleasure or good is there in being exiled from your country and
having to walk around without a set home or even a bed? This extraordinary
episode in the lives of two tzadikim (righteous people) offers
a surprising solution.
Rabbi Menachem-Nachum of Chernobyl
was heavily involved in tzedakah (charity), chesed (deeds
of kindness), and pidyon shevu'im (redeeming captive Jews). He
spent much of his time collecting money and sending it to the poor in the land
of Israel.
At that time, there was a war
between Russia and Turkey and the Turks were in control of the land of Israel. Since
Rebbe Nachum sent money to the land of Israel, the Russians accused him of
sending money to the Turks to aid them in their war against Russia. The
Russians took him captive and placed him in jail.
Rabbi Ze'ev-Wolf of Zhitomir, who
was a colleague of Menachem Nachum - they were both close disciples of the
Maggid of Mezritch -- was very upset by his friend's suffering and sought means
to alleviate the difficulty of his friend's imprisonment.
One day he approached the prison
guard and bribed the man to allow he and his friend to exchange places every
Thursday. Rebbe Nachum would be set free for the day and Rebbe Ze'ev would sit
in the prison.
One Thursday, when Rebbe Ze'ev
came to bribe the guard so that they could switch places for the day, Rebbe
Nachum called him over and said, "There is no need for you to bribe him
anymore. Today I shall be set free, G-d willing."
And so it happened.
When asked how he knew that he
was going to be set free, this was Rebbe Nachum's response:
"This morning a woman from
the upper world appeared to me and asked, 'What is the meaning of Rashi's
comment, "For your pleasure, for your own good'?" What pleasure and
what good is there from walking around in exile?'
"When I remained silent, she
promptly answered her question by saying that his entire life Avraham Avinu
performed the mitzvah (commandment) of hachnasas orchim (hospitality)
with great enthusiasm. His home had openings on all four sides, so that from
whichever direction travelers approached, they could easily find an entrance.
Then Avraham Avinu would serve food and drinks with kindness to everyone who
crossed his thresholds.
Nevertheless, he was still
lacking in the completeness of the mitzvah since he himself had never been
hosted by others.
"So G-d appeared to him and said,
'Go forth from your land' meaning then you will feel the same feelings that a
person who needs to be hosted feels.
"And this is 'for your
pleasure and for your own good' means that after being hosted by others you
will be better able to fulfill the mitzvah of hospitality completely and
properly.
" ''The same principle
applies to you,' the mysterious woman continued. 'Your entire life you engaged
in the mitzvah of redeeming captives, and G-d wanted you to feel for yourself
what prisoners feel.'
"From her words I understood
that my time in the prison had ended and that I was about to be released. I
felt so relieved. I also burned with curiosity. Sensing that she was about to
depart, I quickly gathered courage and asked her, 'Please tell me who you are.'
"She replied 'Sarah, the
wife of Avraham,' and suddenly disappeared."

Why
this week?
1) In this week's Torah reading, Lech Lecha, Avraham went to war against great
odds in order to rescue Lot. His nephew and brother-in-law, Lot from captivity.
(Gen: 14:11-16)
2) The 11th of the Jewish month of Cheshvan (Monday night - Tuesday) is the
yahrzeit of Rebbe-Nachum of Chernobyl.
Biographic
notes:
Rebbe Menachem-Nachum Twersky of Chernobyl [of blessed memory: 5490 - 11
Cheshvan 5548 (1730-1787)], was a disciple of the Baal Shem Tov and
senior disciple of the Maggid of Mezritch, and subsequently
the founder of the Chernobyl dynasty of which many branches still function
today, such as Trisk, Skver and Rachmastrivker, in addition to the all the
courts throughout the Jewish world that bear the name Chernobyl. He is the
author of the important Chasidic work, Meor Enayim. Also, he is
said to be a grandson of Adam Baal Shem (predecessor of Rabbi
Yisrael Baal Shem Tov).
Rebbe
Benyamin Ze'ev-Wolf of Zhitomir [5512 - Purim 5560 (1772-1860)], the third
son of Rabbi Yechiel-Michil of Zlotchov, was one of the inner circle of
disciples of the Maggid of Mezritch. Famous for his sincerity
and his exceptional love of his fellow Jews, including the irreligious, he is
the author of Ohr Hameir, known for its wealth of material on the
history of Chasidism and the teachings of its founders.
