Parsha Tzav
Last week we learned of the various
sacrifices such ask Korban Olah, Chatas or Asham. This week we continue with
what happens to them and if one can eat from them and whom?
6:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2
Command Aaron and his sons, saying: This is the law of the burnt-offering: it
is that which goes up on its firewood upon the altar all night unto the
morning; and the fire of the altar shall be kept burning thereby. 3 And the
priest shall put on his linen garment, and his linen breeches shall he put upon
his flesh; and he shall take up the ashes whereto the fire hath consumed the
burnt-offering on the altar, and he shall put them beside the altar.
When the Cohain shall clean up the
remains of the ashes of the burnt wood/Korban-fat he is required to wear linen
clothing.
4
And he shall put off his garments, and put on other garments, and carry forth
the ashes without the camp unto a clean place.
After the Cohain has removed the
ashes, he has to wear other garments to take the ashes outside of the camp.
5
And the fire upon the altar shall be kept burning thereby, it shall not go out;
and the priest shall kindle wood on it every morning; and he shall lay the
burnt-offering in order upon it, and shall make smoke thereon the fat of the
peace-offerings. 6 Fire shall be kept burning upon the altar continually; it
shall not go out.
The original fire came down from
heaven and then kept burning from the first of Nisan 2449 until the 9th
of Av 3338.
7
And this is the law of the meal-offering: the sons of Aaron shall offer it
before the LORD, in front of the altar. 8 And he shall take up therefrom his
handful, of the fine flour of the meal-offering, and of the oil thereof, and
all the frankincense which is upon the meal-offering, and shall make the
memorial-part thereof smoke upon the altar for a sweet savor unto the LORD.
The meal offering was always
non-leavened. As I mentioned it consisted of three fingers holding the maximum
amount of flour and mixed with the oil and put on the fire. The rest belongs to
the Cohain.
9 And
that which is left thereof shall Aaron and his sons eat; it shall be eaten
without leaven in a holy place; in the court of the tent of meeting they shall
eat it.
The leftover flour from the
donation and hand clutching the floor in the three middle fingers.
10
It shall not be baked with leaven. I have given it as their portion of My
offerings made by fire; it is most holy, as the sin-offering, and as the
guilt-offering. 11 Every male among the children of Aaron may eat of it, as a
due for ever throughout your generations, from the offerings of the LORD made
by fire; whatsoever touches them shall be holy.
It is baked and finished off before
18 minutes have elapsed.
12
And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 13 This is the offering of Aaron and of
his sons, which they shall offer unto the LORD in the day when he is anointed:
the tenth part of an ephah of fine flour for a meal-offering perpetually, half
of it in the morning, and half thereof in the evening. 14 On a griddle it shall
be made with oil; when it is soaked, thou shalt bring it in; in broken pieces
shalt thou offer the meal-offering for a sweet savor unto the LORD.
A fried Matzo or Matzah-Brei minus
the egg.
15
And the anointed priest that shall be in his stead from among his sons shall
offer it, it is a due for ever; it shall be wholly made to smoke unto the LORD.
16 And every meal-offering of the priest shall be wholly made to smoke; it
shall not be eaten.
When the Cohain offers up the Korban
Mincha, it must burn completely.
17
And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 18 Speak unto Aaron and to his sons,
saying: This is the law of the sin-offering: in the place where the
burnt-offering is killed (ritually slaughtered and
every time it says killed or kill means just this with a blessing, a special
knife and cut) shall the
sin-offering be killed before the LORD; it is most holy. 19 The priest that
offers it for sin shall eat it; in a holy place shall it be eaten, in the court
of the tent of meeting.
Korban Chatas is either made at the
dedication as here or for a sin involving Kares or Death. If one accidently
committed a sin (like either forgetting it was Shabbos or knowing it was
Shabbos but forgetting that plowing, gathering or willowing was a Melacha and
forbidden on Shabbos; then he must bring a Korban Chatas. However, if he
purposely went about writing two letters together or carrying a feather from
one domain to another and these are forbidden he either gets Kares or if warned
the death penalty. This explains when the sin offering occurs and when it does
not make atonement. Note: Before HASHEM even the most anti-religious Atheist
can repent before his death and his death can bring about full Teshuva.
20
Whatsoever shall touch the flesh thereof shall be holy; and when there is
sprinkled of the blood thereof upon any garment, thou shalt wash that whereon
it was sprinkled in a holy place.
The highest level of purity shall
both the one who eats and the Cohain.
21
But the earthen vessel wherein it is sodden shall be broken; and if it be
sodden in a brazen vessel, it shall be scoured, and rinsed in water. 22 Every
male among the priests may eat thereof; it is most holy.
After containing holy blood the
vessel must be koshered and earthen or clay vessels cannot be koshered and
therefore broken.
23
And no sin-offering, whereof any of the blood is brought into the tent of
meeting to make atonement in the holy place, shall be eaten; it shall be burnt
with fire.
This case only when the blood is
brought within.
7:1 And this is the law of the guilt-offering: it
is most holy. 2 In the place where they kill the burnt-offering shall they kill
the guilt-offering: and the blood thereof shall be dashed against the altar
round about. 3 And he shall offer of it all the fat thereof: the fat tail, and
the fat that covers the inwards, 4 and the two kidneys, and the fat that is on
them, which is by the loins, and the lobe above the liver, which he shall take
away by the kidneys. 5 And the priest shall make them smoke upon the altar for
an offering made by fire unto the LORD; it is a guilt-offering. 6 Every male
among the priests may eat thereof; it shall be eaten in a holy place; it is most
holy.
The Asham or Guilt Korban is very
holy but any Cohain can eat from it even those who did not prepare, slaughter
or put on the Mizbayach.
7 As
is the sin-offering, so is the guilt-offering; there is one law for them; the
priest that makes atonement therewith, he shall have it. 8 And the priest that
offers any man's burnt-offering, even the priest shall have to himself the skin
of the burnt-offering which he hath offered.
The Cohain doing all the work shall receive the flayed skin for
himself.
9
And every meal-offering that is baked in the oven, and all that is dressed in
the stewing-pan, and on the griddle, shall be the priest's that offers it. 10
And every meal-offering, mingled with oil, or dry, shall all the sons of Aaron
have, one as well as another.
Those meal offerings of regular
people are for any Cohain to eat from.
11
And this is the law of the sacrifice of peace-offerings, which one may offer
unto the LORD. 12 If he offer it for a thanksgiving, then he shall offer with
the sacrifice of thanksgiving unleavened cakes mingled with oil, and unleavened
wafers spread with oil, and cakes mingled with oil, of fine flour soaked. 13
With cakes of leavened bread he shall present his offering with the sacrifice
of his peace-offerings for thanksgiving.
Korban Shalomim have various Matzo,
fried and unleavened cake.
14
And of it he shall present one out of each offering for a gift unto the LORD;
it shall be the priest's that dashes the blood of the peace-offerings against
the altar. 15 And the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace-offerings for
thanksgiving shall be eaten on the day of his offering; he shall not leave any
of it until the morning.
Thanksgiving is with leavened. It
was mostly brought for the same reasons we say HaGomel today. Like traveling
though a dangerous area like a desert, passing over an ocean or very large sea,
recovering from an accident or illness that could be life threatening. Even a
danger to an organ like shrapnel coming close to one’s eye.
16
But if the sacrifice of his offering be a vow, or a freewill-offering, it shall
be eaten on the day that he offers his sacrifice; and on the morrow that which
remains of it may be eaten. 17 But that which remains of the flesh of the
sacrifice on the third day shall be burnt with fire.
He has two days to eat this
sacrifice. It is sort of wanting to please HASHEM through the Korban.
18
And if any of the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace-offerings be at all eaten
on the third day, it shall not be accepted, neither shall it be imputed unto
him that offers it; it shall be an abhorred thing, and the soul that eats of it
shall bear his iniquity.
He has overextended his stay with
the holy and it is gluttony and abhorrent to G-D. It is a matter of not use of
the system but abuse of the system in modern terms.
19
And the flesh that touches any unclean thing shall not be eaten; it shall be
burnt with fire. And as for the flesh, every one that is clean may eat thereof.
20 But the soul that eats of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace-offerings,
that pertain unto the LORD, having his uncleanness upon him, that soul shall be
cut off from his people.
If one eats the tail fat, forbidden
fat (Chelev), a part of the Korban defiled by a dead Sheretz (mouse, lizard,
snake, etc.) or dead/Tzoras (like leprosy) human will have that soul cut off by
Kares.
21
And when any one shall touch any unclean thing, whether it be the uncleanness
of man, or an unclean beast, or any unclean detestable thing, and eat of the
flesh of the sacrifice of peace-offerings, which pertain unto the LORD, that
soul shall be cut off from his people.
One needs to be Tahor (ritually
pure) to eat a Korban. Anybody who is Tumay (ritually impure) also known as a state
of Tuma and violates the Mikdash or eats of a Korban receives Kares (spiritual
excommunication in the next world) if done willfully but if by accident then
one has to bring a Chatas for the trespass.
טֻמְאָתוֹ עָלָיו - (lit.)
While his defilement is upon him. The verse is speaking of one who is himself ritually
defiled, but one who is not ritually defiled and eats sacrificial flesh that is ritually defiled is not punishable by
excision, but only for
transgressing
the prohibition: “The flesh of
a peace-offering that
touches anything ritually defiled must not be eaten.” The warning against a ritually defiled person
eating ritually undefiled sacrificial
flesh
is not mentioned explicitly in the Torah, but the sages derived it by means of
an analogy (גְזֵרָה
שָׁוָה). Three times the punishment of excision is stated regarding those
who eat sacrificial flesh in a state of ritual defilement, and our rabbis
expounded this in Tractate Shevuot: one as a general statement that would include all sacred flesh of all sacrifices; one mentioning a specific case (the peace-offering), thus limiting the rule to
sacrificial animals;
and one to indicate that the case of a variable sin-offering is prescribed
specifically for
entering
the Sanctuary or eating
from
sacrifices in
a state of
ritual defilement.
22
And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 23 Speak unto the children of Israel,
saying: Ye shall eat no fat, of ox, or sheep, or goat. 24 And the fat of that
which dies of itself, and the fat of that which is torn of beasts, may be used
for any other service; but ye shall in no wise eat of it.
יֵֽעָשֶׂה לְכָל־מְלָאכָה- May be used for any work. This comes to teach us
that the fat of
a carcass
does not impart ritual defilement in the way flesh of a carcass does. וְאָכֹל לֹא תֹֽאכְלֻֽהוּ - But you
must not eat it. Scripture hereby tells us
that the
prohibition of eating a carcass or a fatally injured animal takes effect
in addition to the existing prohibition of eating fat, that if someone ate the
fat of a carcass
he also incurs the prohibition of eating a carcass, and you do not apply the usual rule that a prohibition cannot take effect on an already prohibited object.
Therefore for a Chulin or Trafe
animal, the fat can be used for tallow for candles.
25
For whosoever eats the fat of the beast, of which men present an offering made
by fire unto the LORD, even the soul that eats it shall be cut off from his
people. 26 And ye shall eat no manner of blood, whether it be of fowl or of
beast, in any of your dwellings.
Hence blood in an egg is forbidden.
27
Whosoever it be that eats any blood, that soul shall be cut off from his
people.
Kares is the punishment for eating
blood for it is the soul (Nefesh) of the animal.
28
And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 29 Speak unto the children of Israel,
saying: He that offers his sacrifice of peace-offerings unto the LORD shall
bring his offering unto the LORD out of his sacrifice of peace-offerings. 30
His own hands shall bring the offerings of the LORD made by fire: the fat with
the breast shall he bring, that the breast may be waved for a wave-offering
before the LORD. 31 And the priest shall make the fat smoke upon the altar; but
the breast shall be Aaron's and his sons'.
All the Chelev (organ fat) or Aliya
(tail fat) shall smoke on the fire.
32
And the right thigh shall ye give unto the priest for a heave-offering out of
your sacrifices of peace-offerings. 33 He among the sons of Aaron, that offers
the blood of the peace-offerings, and the fat, shall have the right thigh for a
portion. 34 For the breast of waving and the thigh of heaving have I taken of
the children of Israel out of their sacrifices of peace-offerings, and have
given them unto Aaron the priest and unto his sons as a due for ever from the
children of Israel.
These parts along with the stomach
and the cheeks of a Korban.
35
This is the consecrated portion of Aaron, and the consecrated portion of his
sons, out of the offerings of the LORD made by fire, in the day when they were
presented to minister unto the LORD in the priest's office; 36
which the LORD commanded to be given them of the children of Israel, in the day
that they were anointed. It is a due for ever throughout their generations.
These parts should therefore apply
now. However, some families calling themselves Cohain, Kahane, Katz, etc. are
not so or from a Cohain that married a divorcee or non-Jew. Therefore one has
to have generation to generation testimony and if not they are suspect and not
fit to eat.
37
This is the law of the burnt-offering, of the meal-offering, and of the
sin-offering, and of the guilt-offering, and of the consecration-offering, and
of the sacrifice of peace-offerings; 38 which the LORD commanded
Moses in mount Sinai, in the day that he commanded the children of Israel to
present their offerings unto the LORD, in the wilderness of Sinai.
Thus ends the laws of the Korbanos
8:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 'Take
Aaron and his sons with him, and the garments, and the anointing oil, and the
bullock of the sin-offering, and the two rams, and the basket of unleavened
bread; 3 and assemble thou all the congregation at the door of the tent of
meeting.'
Now the Cohanim are to be
consecrated before the nation. First Aharon in front of the AM and then his sons
as regular Priests.
4
And Moses did as the LORD commanded him; and the congregation was assembled at
the door of the tent of meeting. 5 And Moses said unto the congregation: 'This
is the thing which the LORD hath commanded to be done.' 6 And Moses brought
Aaron and his sons, and washed them with water. 7 And he put upon him the
tunic, and girded him with the girdle, and clothed him with the robe, and put
the ephod upon him, and he girded him with the skilfully woven band of the
ephod, and bound it unto him therewith. 8 And he placed the breastplate upon
him; and in the breastplate he put the Urim and the Thummim. 9 And he set the
mitre upon his head; and upon the mitre, in front, did he set the golden plate,
the holy crown; as the LORD commanded Moses. 10 And Moses took the anointing
oil, and anointed the tabernacle and all that was therein, and sanctified them.
11 And he sprinkled thereof upon the altar seven times, and anointed the altar
and all its vessels, and the laver and its base, to sanctify them. 12 And he
poured of the anointing oil upon Aaron's head, and anointed him, to sanctify
him.
First Moshe had to sanctify the
Cohain Gadol before the simple Cohanim.
13
And Moses brought Aaron's sons, and clothed them with tunics, and girded them
with girdles, and bound head-tires upon them; as the LORD commanded Moses. 14
And the bullock of the sin-offering was brought; and Aaron and his sons laid
their hands upon the head of the bullock of the sin-offering.
Now the simple Cohain had to be
sanctified.
15
And when it was slain, Moses took the blood, and put it upon the horns of the
altar roundabout with his finger, and purified the altar, and poured out the
remaining blood at the base of the altar, and sanctified it, to make atonement
for it. 16 And he took all the fat that was upon the inwards, and the lobe of
the liver, and the two kidneys, and their fat, and Moses made it smoke upon the
altar.
This was the first stage with the
bull and the sprinkling and consecrating followed by the ram.
17
But the bullock, and its skin, and its flesh, and its dung, were burnt with
fire without the camp; as the LORD commanded Moses. 18 And the ram of the
burnt-offering was presented; and Aaron and his sons laid their hands upon the
head of the ram. 19 And when it was killed, Moses dashed the blood against the
altar round about. 20 And when the ram was cut into its pieces, Moses made the
head, and the pieces, and the suet smoke. 21 And when the inwards and the legs
were washed with water, Moses made the whole ram smoke upon the altar; it was a
burnt-offering for a sweet savor; it was an offering made by fire unto the
LORD; as the LORD commanded Moses. 22 And the other ram was presented, the ram
of consecration, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands upon the head of the
ram. 23 And when it was slain, Moses took of the blood thereof, and put it upon
the tip of Aaron's right ear, and upon the thumb of his right hand, and upon
the great toe of his right foot. 24 And Aaron's sons were brought, and Moses
put of the blood upon the tip of their right ear, and upon the thumb of their
right hand, and upon the great toe of their right foot; and Moses dashed the
blood against the altar round about.
Blood of the sacrifice then went on
the right ear, right hand and right toe.
25
And he took the fat, and the fat tail, and all the fat that was upon the
inwards, and the lobe of the liver, and the two kidneys, and their fat, and the
right thigh. 26 And out of the basket of unleavened bread, that was before the
LORD, he took one unleavened cake, and one cake of oiled bread, and one wafer,
and placed them on the fat, and upon the right thigh. 27 And he put the whole
upon the hands of Aaron, and upon the hands of his sons, and waved them for a
wave-offering before the LORD. 28 And Moses took them from off their hands, and
made them smoke on the altar upon the burnt-offering; they were a consecration-offering
for a sweet savor; it was an offering made by fire unto the LORD. 29 And Moses
took the breast, and waved it for a wave-offering before the LORD; it was
Moses' portion of the ram of consecration; as the LORD commanded Moses. 30 And
Moses took of the anointing oil, and of the blood which was upon the altar, and
sprinkled it upon Aaron, and upon his garments, and upon his sons, and upon his
sons' garments with him, and sanctified Aaron, and his garments, and his sons,
and his sons' garments with him.
This process was one time by Moshe
for the first consecration and then the rest comes from birth. Never again
would a born Cohain have to under go this ceremony.
31
And Moses said unto Aaron and to his sons: 'Boil the flesh at the door of the
tent of meeting; and there eat it and the bread that is in the basket of
consecration, as I commanded, saying: Aaron and his sons shall eat it.
The sacrifices are normally
roasted, but this is boiled.
32
And that which remains of the flesh and of the bread shall ye burn with fire.
What is leftover shall be burnt as
it is holy and the time is passing or passed.
33
And ye shall not go out from the door of the tent of meeting seven days, until
the days of your consecration be fulfilled; for He shall consecrate you seven
days.
During the consecration period,
they are absorbing holiness and must remain inside the tent.
34
As hath been done this day, so the LORD hath commanded to do, to make atonement
for you. 35 And at the door of the tent of meeting shall ye abide day and night
seven days, and keep the charge of the LORD, that ye die not; for so I am
commanded.
For going outside would mean death
during the consecration period.
36
And Aaron and his sons did all the things which the LORD commanded by the hand of
Moses.
A short story with Rabbi Simcha HaCohain Kuk Ztzal: One year the
prices of Lulav, Esrogim, Hadasim needed for Sukkos had prices going sky-high
for the average Torah Scholar or working man. Rabbi Kuk told the merchants that
if they were not willing to lower their prices, he would declare that due to
the absurd prices people should not use their own Lulav but depend on one for
each Synagogue. Immediately, the prices became semi-reasonable again.
Last year, for the first time, I used handmade Spelt Matzos for
the Seder with special Heckshirim. It cost me about 120 to 150 NIS for a
kilogram while a kilogram of machine Spelt Matzos (non-Seder) was about 2/3rds
less. This year the price jumped to 215 or 250 for a quarter of a kilogram. I
am not with a wheat allergy but spelt is easier on my digestion. I then went to
Chabad and bought three handmade Seder Matzos for 30NIS.
When prices get ridiculous people have to say no! There are also
Oat Matzos without Gluten.
Drinking water notice:
During Pesach, HaRav Ovadia Yosef
used to have about 500 liters of drinking water put aside for Pesach. The
reason “Chametz B’ Ma Sheh Hu” (Leaven is forbidden even in minute quantities).
What is to prevent a non-Jewish Fisherman from throwing his net into the
Kinneret with Chametz. Rabbi Simcha HaCohain Kuk argued that the Torah was
talking about a singularity quantity and not parts per billions, trillions etc.
This year, the water authority said
that all water used on Pesach would be either from wells or sea water that was
purified. Every problem has a solution even for the highest Chumra (standard
above and beyond the Halacha from Sinai).
The early warning
before the siren.
My daughter is a kindergarten
teacher. She has a boy in her Gan who has a father in the Emergency Medical
Service. He gets an alert as soon as the Radar picks up an incoming rocket. He
calls my daughter and she gathers up the children before the siren sounds. One
siren is above the Synagogue adjoining the Gan. She got the children from her
Gan and the next door Gan into the shelter before the siren. This way there is
no panic or upset kindergarteners.
My friend the Colonel
He is in the Engineering Corp. He
was in Gaza, Lebanon and as we entered Syria after Assad. In short 550 plus
days in the Reserves at the time of this writing.
He confided in me that he is
worried for his men. In Gaza one of his soldiers wrecking a building with a 6
meter long arm for hitting it from afar, was killed when he tried toppling a
building too close to it and it collapsed on him that killed the operator.
Israel now has special
vests-overalls so that the operator is sniper/shrapnel proof. One of his men
got off a bulldozer to take a leak and was killed.
We are playing with fire in Gaza.
We keep going in and out but they keep setting traps. One is a type from the
side with a trip wire. Another a large ground explosion to hit the vehicle
under the carriage. Finally, barrels in the wreckage filled with explosives.
The Col. Wants to tell his men about safety first for a few days before
engaging.
With such a long protracted war,
the Col. Is having trouble getting the full reserve contingent. In order to
attract his men, he offers them longer leaves home than normally allowed in the
army. This way, they are willing to do a lot more reserve duty.
The First Seder Ever in Ho Chi Minh City
By Rabbi Yerachmiel Tilles
https://ascentofsafed.com/Stories/Stories/5785/1426-28.html
In 2005, Rabbi Bentzi & Rochie Sudak were designated and authorized by
Lubavitch World Headquarters to prepare a large Passover Seder in Ho Chi Minh
City, Vietnam. Amazingly, this young couple were then married only a little
over a year.
They arrived in this foreign land on Monday, April 18, with no language
skills and almost no Passover provisions, due to strict baggage allowances.
That year the first Seder would be on Saturday night [like this year - YT], so
they realized that they would have to find a venue, set up a
kosher-for-Passover kitchen and prepare a festive meal for 75 people, all
before the start of Shabbat on Friday eve. Also, they needed to make sure that
the matza and wine they shipped would arrive on time from Hong Kong.
From the airport, their first stop was to the hotel where they had already
reserved a suite of rooms. They stored their bags and immediately called Naomi
Lee, a Jewish woman whose number was given to them by Rabbi Mordechai Avtzon,
the head shaliach of Chabad of Hong Kong [and the Far East - YT]. She took them
to Coop Mart, where they filled up seven carts with pots, pans, utensils, wine
glasses, tea cups and more.
Back in their hotel room, they started working the phones to call their contacts
about the Seder.
Seder invitations had been sent out before their arrival, so by their
first full day, Tuesday, they were already receiving responses, mostly by
email. They were also busy at an electronics store, purchasing food processors,
blenders, ovens, etc. Their determined efforts to find a luxurious venue for
the Seder to their dismay were not successful, so they called housekeeping at
the hotel to arrange tables in their suite to seat 50.
"Only residents are allowed here," housekeeping told them.
"We will not give you extra tables."
They needed to start accepting reservations, but to their shock the
internet wasn't working. They called the front desk and were told that no one
in the hotel has internet access now. They waited a few hours and called again.
This time they told them that the internet hub in Singapore was down, so there
was no internet in the whole city. Oh No!
The next day, Wednesday, began with an expedition back to Coop Mart. They
bought serving bowls, oven trays, aluminum foil, airtight containers, pitchers,
and the main item on the remaining long list, 75 place settings of dinnerware
and flatware.
The housekeeping crew's eyes were popping at the sight of this huge
shipment. Housekeeping called worriedly to remind them that no parties were
allowed. The Sudaks assured them: "This will not be a party. We simply are
having dinner with friends."
Another trip to the electronics store gained them a freezer, gas oven and
stove, all to be delivered. They returned to the hotel to drop everything off,
and then rushed to the produce market. They bought so many fruits and
vegetables that they were asked if they were opening a hotel.
After receiving a promise that all the produce would be delivered in the
morning, they went back to the apartment, where they collapsed, exhausted, at
8:00 p.m. Little did they realize that this was merely the calm before the
storm.
Soon, the quiet was interrupted by the telephone. They leapt to their
feet. It was the management again.
"Mr. Sudak. We don't allow gas ranges in the hotel."
They refused to let the equipment be brought up to their suite. Everything
they bought was piled on the sidewalk! They frantically negotiated with the
hotel until finally they consented to return all the equipment onto the truck
and lock its doors, but only for one night.
* * *
Bentzi woke Thursday morning, at 5 A.M, sweating, having dreamed that the
veggie order was refused. What will they think when a truck of produce comes
for two tourists?
He told the sleepy guy at the front desk that he was expecting a lot of
food, because he has to cook a week's worth of food for his Passover holiday.
"Cook? With what, Mr. Sudak? No gas ranges! But no problem. I will
send the produce to your room."
Sudak breathed a sigh of relief…which was quickly shoved aside by an
unpleasant thought. "How did the night shift guy know about the gas range
and my name?"
The produce finally arrived. They put it in one of the bedrooms with the
air conditioner on at full blast... a makeshift cold storage room. The helpers
started arriving. Naomi Lee's maid and her friends, as well as the waiters from
the hotel bar, all wanted to help prepare the Seder. "When do we
start?" they asked. They knew they would be paid a kingly sum... one U.S. dollar
per hour!
At 8:30 a.m. the Sudaks met with the hotel supervisor and explained to
her: "We are planning a dinner and many of your important clients will be
there. The U.S. Consul General is coming. And the Chilean Consul General. Are
you suggesting turning these people away?"
She relented, "Okay. Use the party room." Great idea! However,
she then continued, "But don't use a gas range." Oh well, he thought,
I guess we'll have to improvise.
Back at the hotel, preparations were in full swing. Rochie had a crew of
maids busy cutting commercial size salads, and squeezing oranges and lemons.
Six of the maids almost fainted when he grated the horseradish for Maror, the
'bitter herb.'
It appeared as if Rochie was running a marathon to cook all the food.
Every spoon, fork, plate, you name it, had a label that takes a night of
soaking to remove. Every vegetable, too, had to soak in anti-bacterial soap and
then be rinsed with mineral water. Rochie became an expert at non-verbal
communication. All instructions were given through hand motions, hastily drawn
illustrations, and mostly, just by example.
Friday dawned. The salmon finally arrived. The lady at the fish store
found the last new filleting knife, still in the wrapper. Rochie had convinced
someone from the store the fish in their kitchen had to be filleted for reasons
of kashrut.
Bentzi went yet one more time to Coop Mart. Some of the employees
expressed surprise that a rabbi loved shopping so much. He asked for ten
tablecloths, and insisted that he had to repeat the order ten times until they
finally understood. Whew!
Not so fast. A few minutes later they came back with ten table clocks.
* * *
Two hours to Shabbat and Sam arrived, referred by the Israeli embassy in Hanoi.
Sam had been living in Vietnam for ten years. He was married to a Vietnamese
woman and raising their children in that culture. He was willing to come to the
Seder, but he wanted to make sure it would be roomy, that it would run on
schedule and end early! Rabbi Bentzi assured him of all three things, at the
same time praying that it really would happen.
Next, they received an email from distraught American parents whose son,
John, lived in Vietnam. They wrote, "Our son is not interested in coming,
could you email him? He doesn't speak to us; we have nothing to do with
him."
Bentzi tried to reach John many times, but no response. At the last
minute, though, they got a visit from John. He said he would come to the Seder.
An hour to Shabbat. The salmon smelled fantastic. Rochie got it together
against all odds.
Shabbat ended. It was now Saturday night, Passover. Rochie opened the
evening by welcoming everyone and inviting the women to light candles for the
holiday while their families stood around them.
The party room was "L" shaped, with a large double door
in-between. Bentzi decided to seat the guests separately: Americans and those
who spoke English well in one room, Israelis and any others who preferred to
speak Hebrew in the other. The young rabbi stood in the doorway, and did his
best to keep both rooms in sync. All songs were sung in both languages.
Seder ended at midnight. It was a huge success! The Sudaks could barely
move, due to exhaustion and relief. It was unbelievable. They had seated
exactly 75 guests, including a group that came with the U.S. consul in Ho Chi
Minh City, who subsequently became a very close friend. How Rochie managed a
gourmet meal under these circumstances is beyond human comprehension, mused
Bentzi. It was a miracle of hard work, ingenuity, and Divine help.
A postscript about John. For most of the Seder, he kept to himself and
didn't participate. But by the end of the Seder, his face was flushed. With
tears in his eyes, he said, "Of all the things my parents did for me my
whole life, sending me to this Seder was the best."
In the following weeks:
The Sudaks were clearly in sync, saying as one that hectic as it had been, it
was one of the happiest weeks of their lives!

Newsletter, a year after the unique Seder in Vietnam.
Why this year?
First Seder on Saturday night, as in this year as well as that year, happens
relatively rarely in the Jewish cycle of holidays.

As we prepare for Passover this Saturday night, I share
with you excerpts of a meaningful letter that inspires me each year.
My Dear
Child,
Late at
night, after the hard work of preparing for Passover, I find myself reflecting
on the Seder and the immense legacy it represents. As I sit with the
Haggadah, I think about what I want to share with you. When you see me at the
Seder wearing a white garment, you might ask why. It's because this night is
like Yom Kippur—a time of reckoning.
We are
judged tonight not just as individuals, but as links in the great chain of the
Jewish people.
If we
imagine the average age of having a child to be about 25 years of age, there
are four generations each century. That means there are a total of 132 people
stretching from our forefathers in Egypt to us today. 132 people had to pass on
this heritage flawlessly, with a devotion and single-mindedness that could not
falter.
Over
3,300 years, this chain has remained unbroken, passing on the story of freedom,
faith, and purpose through 132 generations. Each link in this chain faced
unimaginable challenges—persecution, hunger, loss—and yet held steadfast to
ensure this treasure of our heritage reached the next generation.
What is
this treasure? It is the truth that life is more than survival or material
gain; it is about living with spirituality, upholding integrity, and cherishing
family loyalty. It is the strength to resist temptation, the courage to hold
onto faith against all odds, and the commitment to pass these values forward
Tonight, as we retell the story of the Exodus, we honor
those who came before us. Their sacrifices make it clear: this legacy is no myth
or legend. It is a vibrant truth, carried in the hearts and souls of our
ancestors. Now, I am the 133rd in this chain, striving to live up to their
expectations and to pass this treasure on to you.
One
day, it will be your turn to carry this torch, becoming the 134th in this
sacred mission. May you feel the strength of those who came before us and the
love I pour into passing this legacy to you.
With
all my heart,
Your
Parent
With Wishes for a Blessed Holiday & A Shabbat Shalom!
