Parsha Shelach, 7 stories, Swords of Iron, Rising Lion and other news

Parsha Shelach

We are in the second year since the Bnei Yisrael left Mitzrayim. The Mishkan has been set up, Pesach Sheni observed and now the people are ready as an army to conquer the land.

13:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 'Send thou men, that they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel; of every tribe of their fathers shall ye send a man, everyone a prince among them.'

We learn that each tribe was equal and each tribe was to supply one man.

3 And Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran according to the commandment of the LORD; all of them men who were heads of the children of Israel.

In the desert they were princes, but would they be if each man had his own farm?

4 And these were their names: of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur. 5 Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori. 6 Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh. 7 Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph. 8 Of the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun. 9 Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu. 10 Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi. 11 Of the tribe of Joseph, namely, of the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi. 12 Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli. 13 Of the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael. 14 Of the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi. 15 Of the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi. 16 These are the names of the men that Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua. 17 And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said unto them: 'Get you up here into the South, and go up into the mountains;

I assume that this knowledge of the geography was known to them.

18 and see the land, what it is; and the people that dwells therein, whether they are strong or weak, whether they are few or many;

What they are supposed to gather only whether these people are strong or perhaps weak or in-between and their approximate population. This should have been private and not public knowledge. This was up to Moshe and the Generals to use. Could you imagine if the public knew all about the Iranian Missiles, their accuracy, numbers and explosives and how advanced they were towards a nuclear bomb and nuclear warheads. It might cause a major panic today. This way ignorance is blessing and we have our ways of dealing with programs without the public having to know too much and panicking.

19 and what the land is that they dwell in, whether it is good or bad; and what cities they are that they dwell in, whether in camps, or in strongholds;

Are they fortified like what we see at Tel Arad of the original city or do they live like Bedouin or in between?

20 and what the land is, whether it is fat or lean, whether there is wood therein, or not. And be ye of good courage, and bring of the fruit of the land.'--Now the time was the time of the first-ripe grapes.--

What type of land is it and how are their fruits?

21 So they went up, and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehob, at the entrance to Hamath.

From the Negev to northern Syria. Hamath is south of the Euphrates. Hamath is 218km/135.5 miles north of Damascus.

22 And they went up into the South, and came unto Hebron; and Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were there.--Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.

The were giants.

23 And they came unto the valley of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bore it upon a pole between two; they took also of the pomegranates, and of the figs.

Three of the 7 species of the land that ripen around Tisha B’Av [the day they wept when the spies returned with the evil report].

24 That place was called the valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the children of Israel cut down from thence.

Today Modern Eshcol is in the Negev.

25 And they returned from spying out the land at the end of forty days. 26 And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land.

This was a very bad idea. Either by Moshe or the Spies to report to the Nation before reporting to Moshe. In modern spying, the leadership is giving the data and not the people or mobs to set policy.

27 And they told him, and said: 'We came unto the land whither thou sent us, and surely it flows with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.

If they were to open with everything bad, you would think they had an agenda; so, they started with a good report.

28 Howbeit the people that dwell in the land are fierce, and the cities are fortified, and very great; and moreover we saw the children of Anak there.

Anak = giant people. They are fierce giants. Now this is the equivalent to saying that there are 90,000,000 Iranians with enriched Uranium and 2000+ rockets vs. perhaps 7,500,000 Jews and go and hover in fear. Or like Calev and Yehoshua we can say numbers are one thing and HASHEM ELOKAYNU is with us.

29 Amalek dwells in the land of the South; and the Hittite, and the Jebusite, and the Amorite, dwell in the mountains; and the Canaanite dwells by the sea, and along by the side of the Jordan.'

They already had a battle with Amalek and were very wary of these cruel people. The Hittites had once an empire and had made a name for themselves. The Canaanites were fortified in towns.

30 And Caleb stilled the people toward Moses, and said: 'We should go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.'

Don’t be afraid with sudden fear, we can over-come their advice and advisors as we have G-D.

31 But the men that went up with him said: 'We are not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.'

Foolish people, the L-RD over-threw a superpower against you. Why shouldn’t you trust in HIM. Physical numbers do not guarantee victory. 7,500,000 Jews in Israel vs. 90,000,000 Iranians/Persians. Maybe it is time to bet on HASHEM.

32 And they spread an evil report of the land which they had spied out unto the children of Israel, saying: 'The land, through which we have passed to spy it out, is a land that eats up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of great stature. 33 And there we saw the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, who come of the Nephilim; and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.'

In our sight we felt like grasshoppers but perhaps not in their side.

14:1 And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night. 2 And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron; and the whole congregation said unto them: 'Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would we had died in this wilderness!

For no reason they cried on Tisha B’ Av. HASHEM will later give them a reason to cry on Tisha B’Av.

3 And wherefore doth the LORD bring us unto this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will be a prey; were it not better for us to return into Egypt?' 4 And they said one to another: 'Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.'

They are a mob in complete rebellion against G-D and Moshe.

5 Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel. 6 And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were of them that spied out the land, rent their clothes. 7 And they spoke unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying: 'The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceeding good land. 8 If the LORD delight in us, then He will bring us into this land, and give it unto us--a land which flows with milk and honey. 9 Only rebel not against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us; their defence is removed from over them, and the LORD is with us; fear them not.' 10 But all the congregation bade stone them with stones, when the glory of the LORD appeared in the tent of meeting unto all the children of Israel.

Falling on their faces indicates the Tachnun Prayer against evil doers and evil Sayers. Also Yoshua and Calev.

11 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'How long will this people despise Me? and how long will they not believe in Me, for all the signs which I have wrought among them?

These ungrateful people. I worked for them 10 miracles in Mitzrayim and 250 Miracles when I split the sea for them. They heard my voice at Sinai and now are like spitting in my face.

12 I will smite them with the pestilence, and destroy them, and will make of thee a nation greater and mightier than they.'

It is time that I destroy them on the spot and eventually you will be a tremendous nation.

13 And Moses said unto the LORD: 'When the Egyptians shall hear--for Thou brought up this people in Thy might from among them-- 14 they will say to the inhabitants of this land, who have heard that Thou LORD art in the midst of this people; inasmuch as Thou LORD art seen face to face, and Thy cloud stands over them, and Thou go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night; 15 now if Thou shalt kill this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of Thee will speak, saying: 16 Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which He swore unto them, therefore He hath slain them in the wilderness.

Again the shepherd has to interview to guard the sheep – even if they are not like innocent sheep.

17 And now, I pray Thee, let the power of the LORD be great, according as Thou hast spoken, saying: 18 The LORD is slow to anger, and plenteous in lovingkindness, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, upon the third and upon the fourth generation.

Remember back a relatively short time to Yacov and his merit should last 1000 generations and their sins only a few generations.

19 Pardon, I pray Thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of Thy lovingkindness, and according as Thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.'

Please forgive them!

20 And the LORD sahid: 'I have pardoned according to thy word. 21 But in very deed, as I live--and all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD-- 22 surely all those men that have seen My glory, and My signs, which I wrought in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have put Me to proof these ten times, and have not hearkened to My voice; 23 surely they shall not see the land which I swore unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that despised Me see it.

I shall pardon most now, however, those that despised me shall die now! (Many did not want to enter Eretz Yisrael because they were princes in the wilderness and would be anonymous in Eretz Yisrael. In the end, Calev and Yoshua would be leaders and elders in the future and the other spies with names erased.

24 But My servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed Me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it. 25 Now the Amalekite and the Canaanite dwell in the Vale; tomorrow turn ye, and get you into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.'

So out of 12 only 2 will deserve to return to the land. Now turn towards the Red Sea instead of our land.

26 And the LORD spoke unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying: 27 'How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, that keep murmuring against Me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they keep murmuring against Me. 28 Say unto them: As I live, saith the LORD, surely as ye have spoken in Mine ears, so will I do to you: 29 your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness, and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, ye that have murmured against Me;

In the next 40 aka 39 remaining years, those who are 20 today unto 60 shall die in the wilderness.

30 surely ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I lifted up My hand that I would make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.

Only these two people are guaranteed to enter the land. (There is a Midrash that indicates that 15,000 did not die in the wilderness meaning that there always is room for Teshuva.)

31 But your little ones, that ye said would be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have rejected. 32 But as for you, your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness. 33 And your children shall be wanderers in the wilderness forty years, and shall bear your strayings, until your carcasses be consumed in the wilderness.

You shall die in the wilderness but your children shall inherit the land for they do not know of Mitzrayim and all the foods you ate there and will be happy to start a brand new beginning in a brand new land.

34 After the number of the days in which ye spied out the land, even forty days, for every day a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know My displeasure.

It turned out to be 39years.

35 I the LORD have spoken, surely this will I do unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against Me; in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.'

You have lost your golden chance and you shall wither in the wilderness.

36 And the men, whom Moses sent to spy out the land, and who, when they returned, made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up an evil report against the land, 37 even those men that did bring up an evil report of the land, died by the plague before the LORD.

The worse of the rebels and instigators died on the spot.

38 But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, remained alive of those men that went to spy out the land. 39 And Moses told these words unto all the children of Israel; and the people mourned greatly.

They mourned for their mistake but it was too little and too late.

40 And they rose up early in the morning, and got them up to the top of the mountain, saying: 'Lo, we are here, and will go up unto the place which the LORD hath promised; for we have sinned.' 41 And Moses said: 'Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of the LORD, seeing it shall not prosper?

Now from Yoshua’s tribe there arose men who wanted to conquer the land but they did not have the blessing of HASHEM.

42 Go not up, for the LORD is not among you; that ye be not smitten down before your enemies. 43 For there the Amalekite and the Canaanite are before you, and ye shall fall by the sword; forasmuch as ye are turned back from following the LORD, and the LORD will not be with you.'

They are warned not to try to conquer the land without HASHEM.

44 But they presumed to go up to the top of the mountain; nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and Moses, departed not out of the camp. 45 Then the Amalekite and the Canaanite, who dwelt in that hill-country, came down, and smote them and beat them down, even unto Hormah.

These people were ‘wise-guys’ who thought that through their actions, HASHEM will be with them. Instead they died and became the dry bones in the valley.

15:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them: When ye are come into the land of your habitations, which I give unto you, 3 and will make an offering by fire unto the LORD, a burnt-offering, or a sacrifice, in fulfilment of a vow clearly uttered, or as a freewill-offering, or in your appointed seasons, to make a sweet savor unto the LORD, of the herd, or of the flock; 4 then shall he that brings his offering present unto the LORD a meal-offering of a tenth part of an ephah of fine flour mingled with the fourth part of a hin of oil; 5 and wine for the drink-offering, the fourth part of a hin, shalt thou prepare with the burnt-offering or for the sacrifice, for each lamb.

Each Korban has a different amount of flour, oil and wine. This is the amount for a Lamb.

6 Or for a ram, thou shalt prepare for a meal-offering two tenth parts of an ephah of fine flour mingled with the third part of a hin of oil; 7 and for the drink-offering thou shalt present the third part of a hin of wine, of a sweet savor unto the LORD.

The Ram is larger and gets more flour, oil and wine.

8 And when thou preparest a bullock for a burnt-offering, or for a sacrifice, in fulfilment of a vow clearly uttered, or for peace-offerings unto the LORD; 9 then shall there be presented with the bullock a meal-offering of three tenth parts of an ephah of fine flour mingled with half a hin of oil. 10 And thou shalt present for the drink-offering half a hin of wine, for an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto the LORD.

And a bull gets even more flour, oil and wine.

11 Thus shall it be done for each bullock, or for each ram, or for each of the he-lambs, or of the kids. 12 According to the number that ye may prepare, so shall ye do for every one according to their number. 13 All that are home-born shall do these things after this manner, in presenting an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto the LORD. 14 And if a stranger sojourn with you, or whosoever may be among you, throughout your generations, and will offer an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto the LORD; as ye do, so he shall do.

The measurements are for each and every individual animal Korban as specified above.

15 As for the congregation, there shall be one statute both for you, and for the stranger that sojourns with you, a statute forever throughout your generations; as ye are, so shall the stranger be before the LORD. 16 One law and one ordinance shall be both for you, and for the stranger that sojourns with you.

The same for a Yisrael and a Convert.

17 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 18 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them: When ye come into the land whither I bring you, 19 then it shall be, that, when ye eat of the bread of the land, ye shall set apart a portion for a gift unto the LORD. 20 Of the first of your dough ye shall set apart a cake for a gift; as that which is set apart of the threshing-floor, so shall ye set it apart. 21 Of the first of your dough ye shall give unto the LORD a portion for a gift throughout your generations.

This is Challah (Holly) Bread for the Cohain.

22 And when ye shall err, and not observe all these commandments, which the LORD hath spoken unto Moses, 23 even all that the LORD hath commanded you by the hand of Moses, from the day that the LORD gave commandment, and onward throughout your generations; 24 then it shall be, if it be done in error by the congregation, it being hid from their eyes, that all the congregation shall offer one young bullock for a burnt-offering, for a sweet savor unto the LORD--with the meal-offering thereof, and the drink-offering thereof, according to the ordinance--and one he-goat for a sin-offering. 25 And the priest shall make atonement for all the congregation of the children of Israel, and they shall be forgiven; for it was an error, and they have brought their offering, an offering made by fire unto the LORD, and their sin-offering before the LORD, for their error. 26 And all the congregation of the children of Israel shall be forgiven, and the stranger that sojourns among them; for in respect of all the people it was done in error.

The Torah allows for human error and forgetfulness of a King, Cohain Gadol, Sanhedrin, Beis Din or Individual. The main thing that it was done in error and not willfully.

27 And if one person sin through error, then he shall offer a she-goat of the first year for a sin-offering. 28 And the priest shall make atonement for the soul that errs, when he sins through error, before the LORD, to make atonement for him; and he shall be forgiven, 29 both he that is home-born among the children of Israel, and the stranger that sojourns among them: ye shall have one law for him that does aught in error.

The main thing that it was done in error and not willfully.

30 But the soul that doeth aught with a high hand, whether he be home-born or a stranger, the same blasphemes the LORD; and that soul shall be cut off from among his people. 31 Because he hath despised the word of the LORD, and hath broken His commandment; that soul shall utterly be cut off, his iniquity shall be upon him.

The soul that errs is one thing we call it Shogeg. The one who willing violates is called Mayzid. The Mayzid has purposely affronted G-D and shall be cut off.

32 And while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering sticks upon the sabbath day. 33 And they that found him gathering sticks brought him unto Moses and Aaron, and unto all the congregation. 34 And they put him in ward, because it had not been declared what should be done to him.

They did not know how to deal with a person who purposely violated Shabbos.

35 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'The man shall surely be put to death; all the congregation shall stone him with stones without the camp.' 36 And all the congregation brought him without the camp, and stoned him with stones, and he died, as the LORD commanded Moses.

Those who violate Shabbos purposely are to be put to death by witnesses and a minimum Sanhedrin of 23 [that does not exist today]. In case you are not a Shomer Shabbos person today and born that way {like myself 5th generation Reform Jew} you are considered ‘a child capture by the Gentiles, or Gentile Philosophy. This means that re-education and breaking of non-Jewish Habits are for you and not the death penalty. Time will heal your wound.

37 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 38 'Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them throughout their generations fringes in the corners of their garments, and that they put with the fringe of each corner a thread of blue.

We are uncertain what the Techeiles is. What some people claim it is today is darker blue than sky blue.

39 And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the LORD, and do them; and that ye go not about after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye use to go astray;

The main thing is not to go astray by seeing Tzitzis one is to stop the sin before an action occurs.

40 that ye may remember and do all My commandments, and be holy unto your God.

Upon looking at the Tzitzis, one should remember to be holy unto G-D. There is a story of the man (Ketubos 70B if my memory serves me) that went to a certain professional lady who had gold stools to get to her bed. As he was going, he looked at his Tzitzis stopped and began to cry. He told her why. She gave up her profession, gave away her unholy money to charity and converted to be his wife.

41 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am the LORD your God.'

The whole purpose of wearing Tzitzis is to remember our father in heaven, our G-D Creator and ruler.

Two Bullets Two Miracles for Emil from Col. Avraham C.

Bullet Holes in Cellphone and bullets witnessed by Y. Taub and R. Pauli

Emil was in the engineering unit with Col. Avraham since he was a conscript. Perhaps 18 or 19. The Col. At that time was not a Brigade Commander but a Company Commander meaning either a Lt. or Captain.

Emil is from a family that originated in the Caucus Mountains and one of 11 children. They live in Northern Israel. He has one Charedi Sister, who prays for his welfare daily. Emil is a member of Shomer HaZair Kibbutz. [Kibbutzim so far lost from religion that they don’t keep Kosher, some grow animals that part the hoof and chews not the cud, some members eat bread on Pesach.] Emil is heavier than I and the ceramic vest barely covers his chest and back making him a prime target for a sniper.

Col. Avraham sent his son by bicycle far from the front to intelligence headquarters to get the latest scoop before moving the heavy equipment into Gaza. The information received is that there are Hamas in the area awaiting for Israeli arrival.

What can happen is that sometimes Hamas lets in one vehicle or two and then attacks the 2nd or 3rd while coming after the first vehicle.

Intelligence picked up the internet film of the incident. Two snipers are waiting for Emil’s vehicle. One is the spotter and the other the shooter. The shooter is using half inch wide bullets with some chemicals on them for extra chance to murder. He takes a shot from the left side of the ceramic vest. The body is exposed. He shoots once but hits Emil’s cellphone bending the first bullet but sending shrapnel into his chest cavity. A second bullet goes straight through his phone and him coming out his back and ending up in the chair of the crane that he was driving.

The Unit fires towards the distant houses about six football fields away. The snipers have done their dirty work and put up their film with somebody whom they shot in the leg and another past injury. They are still out there in Gaza waiting for their next victim.

Emil is evacuated by helicopter to Shaarei Tzedek Hospital in Yerushalayim. His condition stabilizes. Col. Avraham says to him. “You can thank your sister’s Psalms for the fact that you are alive. But now you have to give thanks to G-D and do something to keep yourself alive. For you were miraculously spared for some reason.”

The Miracle in the School & Synagogue in Bnei Brak (Pardes Katz)

All right, in the days of Rav Chaim as the Gadol, there were no problems in Bnei Brak due to his merit. A week after, he died, there was a terror attack. Now a building hit and an 80year old died from the blast in an underground room. Rav Chaim and Rav Gershon are gone and constant production of merits and guardian angels go on a weaker generation.

The school was closed and sustained major damage. The Synagogue did look like a bomb hit it except that all the Talmud Standers were intact but the chairs and standers dirty with dust and rubble. The electronic candles (Ner Tamid?) on the wall was still working. The Aron Kodesh and the cloth Parokes (cloth covering) undamaged and on the wall all the Talmud, Mishnah and other Holy Books standing in place. Now the roof support columns had damage.

Miracle in the Soroka Hospital

The father of Moshe Bar Siman Tov, Yehuda Zal, used to be at least the afternoon Chazan in the Sephardic Synagogue on one of the days of Rosh Hashanah. He racked up a lot of merits in this world and the next. Moshe is the Director General of the Health Ministry.

On Wednesday June 18, 2025 aka 22 Sivan 5785, Moshe visited Soroka Hospital. He saw the potential danger and ordered the sixth floor ward evacuated and patients sent to other places or non-glass enclosures below.

At 07:07 Thursday morning, the Iranians sent a barrage of 25 missiles. These are guided missiles. 80% were shot down. However, one hit that same ward in Soroka. The destruction was great. Some minor injures among staff and patients. If the ward had not been evacuated, I hate to think how many dead there would have been.

Sara Y. Rigler wrote: As one doctor declared: “Just yesterday we evacuated the old surgical building that took a direct hit today. It’s a great miracle.”

The Pilot who left his Bridal Canopy by Ohri Schechter

Thanks to My Cousin Dalit Haver Bloch

Grooms/Pilots...

Last Thursday, a combat pilot - a graduate of the Hesder Yeshiva - got married.

But the really moving story started after the Chuppah.

On his wedding night, the newly groom left his wife, drove to her parents' house - and went on an operational mission in Iran.

When his friends from the meeting came to cheer him up, he told them that sixty members of the pilot couldn't make it.

Immediately called his commanders and asked a simple question:

"Get married or fly?" "

And the answer he received: "Get married - and then call... "

And so he wrote that night to his friend:

"We are approaching today to carry out a mission of a real war mitzvah - a groom from his room and a bride from her chuppah.

And we are very happy that this is how the building of our common house begins.

May we add courage, heroism and holiness in our people.

I'm taking my wife to her parents' house now - and traveling to the base. "

Posted on channel 7.

A good friend from Kibbutz in the north of Israel that read the post wrote to me the following:

You know that my brother was a fighter pilot and also got married on a Thursday night...

All the female pilot didn't come because of the attack, and he returned to base on Friday...

And he's been there ever since...

Really the same story...

By the way, he was upset twice - even that many did not come to celebrate with him...

And that he didn't go out in the first wave...

The Jew on the Damascus Football Team by Rabbi Y. Tilles

https://ascentofsafed.com/cgi-bin/ascent.cgi?Name=1436-38

Alex Eisenbach was a well-known and successful businessman in Israel for nearly 40 years. We met often and he had stories to tell about every subject. One day he amazed me [R. Yaakov Cass] by saying, "Even though I am not a Chabadnik, I once did a very big favor for the Lubavitcher Rebbe".

I was quite taken aback. With a big smile he said, "I bet you would love to hear the story, wouldn't you?" and he was absolutely right.

He then told me about his early life. He came with his family to British Mandated Palestine from Rumania when he was a youngster, moving to Tel Aviv. In 1946, aged 18, he decided to study pharmacy. There was no school of pharmacy in 'Palestine.' The nearest was in Damascus, Syria, where many Jewish men went to study pharmacy.

Alex enrolled there, and soon thereafter formed a pharmacy football team that travelled to all the other universities in the Middle East. No one suspected that he was secretly working as a spy for the Hagenah. He supplied them with a great deal of information which was proved to be invaluable during the War of Independence.

In May 1948, the leaders of the Zionist towns and settlements declared themselves as a state. The five Arab states surrounding Israel, promptly attacked, initiating a war. As a result, Alex was soon thrown out of the university together with all the other Jewish students, while he was still missing one more year of study in order to qualify.

The Hagenah had evolved to become the Israeli Army and Alex turned to them for help in finishing off his university studies. They kindly organized a place for him at the University of Boston. In 1948 the journey to Boston from Tel Aviv was by boat across the Atlantic to New York, and then by train to Boston. Everybody in Alex's neighborhood was excited at his good fortune. His imminent journey became the 'talk of the town.'

Shortly before his departure, a lady knocked at his door. Introducing herself as Mrs. Aryeh Leib Schneerson, she asked Alex if he would be willing and able to deliver a very important and valuable set of documents to her husband's brother, Rabbi M.M. Schneerson, the Ramash, as our Rebbe was known then, in the years that the Rebbe Rayatz was still alive. He was living in the Chabad community in the Crown Heights Section of Brooklyn.

She related that her husband had brought these irreplaceable documents with him when he left Russia, and the Ramash needed them urgently. She did not want to risk sending them by mail; she would trust only a personal emissary. She explained to Alex that upon arrival in New York City, he would have to immediately leave Manhattan by taking the subway to Crown Heights.

Alex replied that he would have no problem to do that. She instructed him to deliver the package to her sister-in-law, the Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka, who would be waiting for him at her home.

A month later Alex duly knocked at the door of the Ramash's home. The Rebbetzin herself came to the door and thanking him most profusely, asked him to leave the package with her. She said she would deliver it to her husband and requested Alex to come back at 4 o'clock in the afternoon to meet him.

When he returned, however, the Rebbetzin apologized that her husband was very busy with his duties and was unable to meet Alex after all. She explained that he had asked her to convey his deepest appreciation for performing such a vital service. "No words can express our gratitude to you for this great mitzvah and favor that you have done; the Ramash sends you his blessing," she said.

In the year 2000 approximately, Alex came to my office one day with tears in his eyes. He explained that the next day he was due to appear at the high court of justice, together with two colleagues. The three of them had conducted a multimillion-dollar business deal, after taking legal advice as how to avoid paying large taxes.

Instead of assisting them though, this advice had led them into serious trouble. The income tax authorities took them to court where they were found guilty of evading taxes. They were fined a million dollars each and sentenced to one full year in prison. Now they were awaiting the results of their appeal.

Alex looked at me and said, "It is not about a prison sentence for me, rather it is about a death sentence. At 80-years-old there is no way I can survive a prison term, and the fine will make me a pauper."

As he spoke, I remembered the story he had told me some ten years earlier. "Alex," I said, "a long time ago you told me that the Rebbe was extremely grateful for the great service you rendered to him. Do you think the Rebbe will simply leave you in the lurch? Come, say your prayers, put your trust in The One Above and ask the Rebbe for his blessing. With G-d's help everything will turn out just fine."

The next day at five o'clock in the afternoon, I was thrilled to hear on the radio that the high court of justice had acquitted all three defendants accused of cheating on their income tax filings. The high court pronounced that as they had taken legal counsel, even though the advice was incorrect, they had acted wrongly in all blamelessness and thus they were innocent.

The very next day as I sat in my office, in bounced Alex grinning from ear to ear. I hugged him as he said, "You see, I did indeed receive the Rebbe's blessing."

"Of course," I replied.

"Yes, but I know it; you just say it," retorted Alex.

Observing the puzzled look on my face, Alex related that as he entered the room in the high court where the appeal was to take place, he looked straight into the face of the chief justice. At that moment something extraordinary happened: he saw the face of the chief justice disappear momentarily and be replaced by the face of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, who gave him a big smile. Within a few moments, the face of the chief justice reappeared.

Alex finished by saying, "At that moment I knew deep in my heart that the Rebbe was with us, and that surely we had to win our case and thank G-d, I was right!"

Rabbi Yaakov Cass is a Lubavitcher chasid living in Jerusalem. Before his recent retirement, he was a senior official in the Israel Ministry of Health.

Why This Week? Moshe selecting and sending twelve men to spy the Land of Israel is the opening topic of this week's Torah reading, Shelach; this week's story opens with a Jew who was a successful spy for Israel outside the Land.

Biographic note:
Yisrael Aryeh-Leib "Leibeh" Schneerson [21 Iyar 1906 - 13 Iyar 1952] was the youngest of Rabbi Levi Yitzchak and Rebbetzin Chana Schneerson's three sons. In 1930 he fled the USSR for Berlin, where his brother, the future Rebbe, lived. He relocated to British Mandatory Palestine in 1933, where he married in 1939 and had a daughter in 1944. In 1950 the family moved to England, to complete his doctoral thesis in the Department of Theoretical Physics of the University of Liverpool. Tragically, he passed away in 1952 at the young age of 46. At the Rebbe's directive, he was buried in the historic Chabad portion of the ancient cemetery in Safed, Israel. In the 1970s, a mathematical paper of his was published in the Journal of Approximation Theory.

The Bride, The Groom and the Stranger in the Night by Rachamim Pauli

A few days ago, two women met in a public shelter in Tel Aviv. One was a bride, who mentioned to the other lady that she was supposed to be married on Tuesday but all the wedding halls are closed as one has to be near a public shelter. The other lady said, no problem bring the groom, the Rabbi, your parents and get married on the street next to the shelter.

Within hours, the lady called up neighbors in her building and the area. People baked, made salads, etc. Got a bunch of tables to place the food on. The Rabbi brought the Chuppah. During or before the ceremony, the siren sounded and then everything went right after the all-clear. The groom is in bliss with his new wife. All thanks to a stranger in the night!

It seems that the number of Israelis trapped abroad is 150,000 some are coming in via sea. The IAF offered transport planes to bring them back but nobody has approved the plan yet. Among people stuck is my neighbor’s son in Israel who is supposed to be married this week. Not to mention his parents and my wife has no manicurist who is stuck abroad.

From lack of sleep, my wife snapped at me. I told her I did not hear you. Finally, I convinced her that she was asleep in the shelter and my phone siren went off as she slept. https://www.timesofisrael.com/caitlyn-jenner-leaves-israel-via-jordan-as-war-rages-with-iran/

We were told that we could be stuck near a shelter for 48hours. However, it seems that we are destroying more and more missile shooting trucks. We just knocked out in the holiest city to Shiites, the airbase with their refueling tankers. It is 2,300 km or just over 1,429 miles away.

Last night, I went to bed close to 11PM and woke up just as the announcement stay close to the shelter appeared. That was 12:25. This usually means that things are about to get hot soon. Luckily, the US or our drones proved precise data and we started taking out the trucks that carry two ballistic missiles. Also some electronic warfare neutralizes their missiles. But their electronic warfare is making the arrow fail from time to time so they have a  better kill rate. At 02:25, I went to sleep on my lounge chair. Woke up as I drink in the shelter from dry atmosphere. At 03:47 a warning of a possible launch soon. 04:05 launches and back to the shelter with sleeping beauty. 04:12 a siren and finally 04:30 all clear for now.

Two more bodies found from Bat Yam. One person still MIA. 8 died last night including a family in a mini-shelter that took a direct hit. Over 100 injured with 26 or more children. A Synagogue miraculous only had minor damage. The Tel Aviv US Consulate was hit.

I am exhausted. I went to bed at 10:30 but slept very light as nerves on edge. At about 45 after midnight, we got the warning. Both of us ran to the facilities and I gabbed my pants, sweat shirt and drinks and headed downstairs. This time with my carry-on as passports and other documents should be in the saferoom. Siren around 00:55 and the all clear at 1:10 or later. My daughter has no shelter and the nearest one is up the hill a good walk away. She and family stayed home. The siren went off by us but not in other parts as the rockets were aimed west of us. Each time a few rockets here or there. I watched a little Fox News and went back to sleep for a 1:20 wake up 1:26 siren and close to 2AM for the all clear with my blood pumping adrenaline. I then slept to 07:06, showered and to the Pirate Minyan. [People have Yahrzeit, are in mourning, etc. they need a Minyan.]

My daughter is ‘teaching’ kindergarten on zoom to two halves of the class. The psychological inspector was concerned about frightened kiddies and my daughter said that they were all happy to see their friends. Why look for trouble that does not exist?

Swords of Iron Day 622 Rising Lion Day 7

This morning I added two more stories to the weekly rabbipauli.blogspot.com one is the bride, the groom and the stranger in the night and other the miracle at Soroka Hospital hit badly today. 48 staff workers injured in attack. https://www.ynetnews.com/article/kib88srss#autoplay

Note in the article that the Arak Heavy Water Facility was attacked today. That was in Beer Sheva and in Holon, Wolfson Hospital almost hit as rocket on near-by building shattered glass in the hospital.

In his 15 years of leading the New Iran, a pro-democracy resistance organization operating from the U.S., Iman Foroutan has seen a lot. Still, Foroutan described the recent Israeli strikes on Iran as “unbelievable.” In an interview with The Media Line, he said that the Iranian people are “the happiest they can be” about the attacks, which have seriously damaged the country’s military, economic and nuclear infrastructure and taken out key figures. https://www.ynetnews.com/article/rjbl4wzexl

Hundreds of helpless patients to be transferred out of Soroka hospital. Because the attack was purposely on the hospital, for Iran something just hit the fan in the bunker of Khamenei and Israel appears to be ready for him to join Saddam, Adolph, etc. Now Israel is out to end the regime and put the people of Iran in charge. In central Israel, Holon etc. 6 seriously injured and total injured per the update was around 60. https://www.jpost.com/israel-news/article-858269
