Parsha Chukas Part 1
There were rebellions in the past
for no good reasons and people died off. There were the gluttons, who were not
satisfied with the Mann. There were the spies and the rebels from the Tribe of
Ephraim who died. Then there was Korach and his rebellion. Finally, the people
wandered in the wilderness close to 39years. Most of the adults who left
Mitzrayim are dead.
Up until now, we have no idea about
the Tuma caused by a dead body and how to make oneself Tahor. We are close to
entering the holy land and people should be walking around in it Tahor.
19:1
And the LORD spoke unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying: 2 This is the statute of
the law which the LORD hath commanded, saying: Speak unto the children of
Israel, that they bring thee a red heifer, faultless, wherein is no blemish,
and upon which never came yoke.
Statute or Chok that the L-RD has
commanded. Chok is like a military order. One must obey and follow it. It
cannot be questioned why or wherefore. Rather one must follow all the details
as prescribed.
Parah Aduma or completely red. Two
black hairs will make it Pasul for use.
3
And ye shall give her unto Eleazar the priest, and she shall be brought forth
without the camp, and she shall be slain before his face. 4 And Eleazar the priest
shall take of her blood with his finger, and sprinkle of her blood toward the
front of the tent of meeting seven times.
The Parah is slaughtered and her
blood gathered in a holy bowl. The Cohain shall do this in a pure place outside
of the camp. He shall take the blood and sprinkle it 7 times towards the Ohel
Moed (tent of meeting/Mishkan/and in later years Mikdash).
5
And the heifer shall be burnt in his sight; her skin, and her flesh, and her
blood, with her dung, shall be burnt. 6 And the priest shall take cedar-wood,
and hyssop, and scarlet, and cast it into the midst of the burning of the
heifer.
This is a complete burning like a
Korban Olah. Wood is also thrown in and hyssop (marjoram) into the fire.
7
Then the priest shall wash his clothes, and he shall bathe his flesh in water,
and afterward he may come into the camp, and the priest shall be unclean until
the even.
The Cohain shall receive Tuma from
the working of the Korban but he bathes in a Mikvah immediately with a change of
clothing and about 18 - 20 minutes after sundown becomes Tahor. So he should
remain outside of the camp until then.
8 And he that burns her shall wash his clothes
in water, and bathe his flesh in water, and shall be unclean until the even.
This seems to be repeating the last
sentence, so it must be in case two or more Cohanim were active in the burning
of the Korban such as one slaughtering and collecting the blood while the other
one burnt the Korban. Since the Torah does not mince words, this appears to be
our lesson from this Pasuk.
9
And a man that is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer, and lay them
up without the camp in a clean place, and it shall be kept for the congregation
of the children of Israel for a water of sprinkling; it is a purification from
sin.
And a second man that is Tahor
shall gather up the ashes, shall place them in a clean=Tahor place outside of
the camp. I assume that it should be close to the Mikvah of living water (fountain/spring/river)
in which those Tuma Sheh Mays shall bathe.
10
And he that gathers the ashes of the heifer shall wash his clothes, and be
unclean until the even; and it shall be unto the children of Israel, and unto
the stranger that sojourns among them, for a statute forever.
And like our previous Cohain or
two, shall bathe himself and his clothes in the Mikvah and become Tahor in the
evening.
11
He that touches the dead, even any man's dead body, shall be unclean seven
days; 12 the same shall purify himself therewith on the third day and on the
seventh day, and he shall be clean; but if he purify not himself the third day
and the seventh day, he shall not be clean.
There was no Chevra Kadisha in past
generations but rather a family burying their own dead. Thus one could see certain
people in families burying their dead. On the third day going into the
spring-Mikvah with a small amount of ashes and on the seventh day and then
become Tahor.
13
Whosoever touches the dead, even the body of any man that is dead, and purifies
not himself--he hath defiled the tabernacle of the LORD--that soul shall be cut
off from Israel; because the water of sprinkling was not dashed against him, he
shall be unclean; his uncleanness is yet upon him.
The status of Am Yisrael today is Tumay.
There is one possibility that if the majority of Am Yisrael is in Eretz Yisrael
even in a state of Tuma, we could offer up a Korban Pesach but until then, we
don’t.
14
This is the law: when a man dies in a tent, every one that cometh into the
tent, and everything that is in the tent, shall be unclean seven days.
This is the (way) of Torah: when a
man kills himself in his tent (by learning Torah). This is the Drash, but Pshat
literally as written is that the person who dies in a tent or house makes the
area Tumay.
15
And every open vessel, which hath no covering close-bound upon it, is unclean.
16 And whosoever in the open field touches one that is slain with a sword, or
one that dies of himself, or a bone of a man, or a grave, shall be unclean
seven days.
The Tuma applies to any vessel open
and the dead person can die of old age, disease or in battle. The amount needed
is that of a bone even the size of a barley grain.
17
And for the unclean they shall take of the ashes of the burning of the
purification from sin, and running water shall be put thereto in a vessel. 18
And a clean person shall take hyssop, and dip it in the water, and sprinkle it
upon the tent, and upon all the vessels, and upon the persons that were there,
and upon him that touched the bone, or the slain, or the dead, or the grave.
As mentioned running or living
water that can be channeled into a Mikvah with even an exit as with the Mikvah
of the Ari Zal in Tsfat Yisrael that has a spring running through it in a cave.
On the third and seventh day with Ayzov (Marjoram) branches. I have growing by
me those that reach the length of over a foot 30-50cm long that would be good
for the Mikdash or Parah.
19
And the clean person shall sprinkle upon the unclean on the third day, and on
the seventh day; and on the seventh day he shall purify him; and he shall wash
his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and shall be clean at even. 20 But the
man that shall be unclean, and shall not purify himself, that soul shall be cut
off from the midst of the assembly, because he hath defiled the sanctuary of
the LORD; the water of sprinkling hath not been dashed against him: he is
unclean.
One who has a chance to become
Tahor should/must become Tahor. If one has the opportunity to purify himself
and does not do so, he cannot enter the congregation. If he does so in the
state of impurity, his soul shall be cut off.
21
And it shall be a perpetual statute unto them; and he that sprinkles the water
of sprinkling shall wash his clothes; and he that touches the water of
sprinkling shall be unclean until even.
It appears to me from this
sentence, if we were to have a Cohain take a Parah Aduma today, we would have
to purify ourselves.
22
And whatsoever the unclean person touches shall be unclean; and the soul that
touches him shall be unclean until even.
He conveys ritual impurity and one
obtains ritual iurity just by touching such a person and must go to the Mikvah
to purify oneself but without the whole ceremony of days and ashes.
20:1
And the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, came into the
wilderness of Zin in the first month; and the people abode in Kadesh; and
Miriam died there, and was buried there. 2 And there was no water for the
congregation; and they assembled themselves together against Moses and against
Aaron.
The Medrash of the well of Miriam: After
in incident with Mosh striking the rock earlier in Sefer Shemos (Exodos), supposedly
Miriam had near her dwelling a well that went with her and supplied the people
with water. It is a nice Medrash. When she passed away, the well no longer
supplied water. In the Gemara it says that if one rises up on Har Carmel and
looks into (Haifa) the bay below, one can see the well. I did so and saw in
between the waves something akin to a whirlpool.
3
And the people strove with Moses, and spoke, saying: 'Would that we had
perished when our brethren perished before the LORD! 4 And why have ye brought
the assembly of the LORD into this wilderness, to die there, we and our cattle?
5 And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in unto
this evil place? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of
pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink.'
The people like promises made and
promises kept but you promised us a land of milk and honey, seed, vineyards,
figs, pomegranates but instead a wilderness and no water to drink. We have seen
that when the people in Gaza don’t have food, they are willing to risk the guns
of Hamas and riot.
6
And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the
tent of meeting, and fell upon their faces; and the glory of the LORD appeared
unto them.
L-RD have mercy upon us and help
us.
7
And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 8 'Take the rod, and assemble the
congregation, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before
their eyes, that it give forth its water; and thou shalt bring forth to them
water out of the rock; so thou shalt give the congregation and their cattle
drink.'
Unlike the previous rock, you are
to speak to the rock and not hit it.
9
And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as He commanded him. 10 And Moses
and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said unto
them: 'Hear now, ye rebels; are we to bring you forth water out of this rock?'
Moshe appears before the rioters
without fear. He started to speak to the rock and a few drops came out and then
a trickle. The natives were getting restless.
11
And Moses lifted up his hand, and smote the rock with his rod twice; and water
came forth abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their cattle.
Moshe loses his cool and hits the
rock not once but twice.
12
And the LORD said unto Moses and Aaron: 'Because ye believed not in Me, to
sanctify Me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring
this assembly into the land which I have given them.' 13 These are the waters
of Meribah, where the children of Israel strove with the LORD, and He was
sanctified in them.
HASHEM now becomes angry with Moshe
and Aharon for not following instructions.

Drama on the Roof of a Tel Aviv Skyscraper
By Rabbi Yerachmiel Tilles via Rabbi Tovia Bolton
https://ascentofsafed.com/Stories/Stories/5785/1438-40.html
About fifteen years
ago, Jerry (not his real name), an Israeli multi-millionaire businessman, was
on the top of the world. He toured the globe enjoying the best hotels,
restaurants, cars and anything that money could buy. He was a self-made-man who
loved his creator (i.e. himself). Saying; "My talents and strength gave me
all these riches." (Deut. 8:17) and the sky was the limit…almost.
One of the most
grandiose building projects ever in Israel, the Azrieli business complex [1] in
Tel Aviv,1 was nearing its completion and Jerry was given an opportunity to
purchase the entire top (49th) floor!
It would cost him
several tens of millions of dollars but he had the money, or could easily
borrow what was lacking and it looked like a promising investment. He examined
all sides of the deal with his lawyers, took a lot of advice and was just about
to say yes until one of his best friends came up with a better investment.
"What?"
His friend exclaimed. "For price of one floor of the Azrieli Towers you
can buy ten whole offices buildings in Hungary! And the economy there is on the
rise! In just two-three years you'll have your entire investment back, and
after that…pure profits! Get in on it now before it's too late and it's all
sold. It's a sure thing!!"
Jerry took his
friend's advice, dropped the Azrieli idea, took loans and invested all he had
in Hungary and within less than a year…lost it all.
Suddenly every penny
he had saved and slaved for was gone and he was in tremendous debt. Even after
he liquidated all his assets, including selling his house to pay his debts, he
still owed 17,000 shekels to the Israeli Revenue Service.
Things happened so
fast that he almost didn't have time to digest it all. At first he even tried
to deny it saying. "After all, that's business; right? ups and downs! Right?
It will pass! The main thing is to smile, keep my eye open for opportunities,
think positively; soon I'll be on the top again. Even more than before! Etc.
etc."
But reality began
creeping up on him when he tried to get the 17,000 shekels. He soon discovered
that his old friends weren't as friendly as before. Doors that used to open for
him were now locked and people weren't returning his phone calls.
With no collateral, the banks refused to loan him money on any terms. He was
getting desperate, things were looking very bad. But then an old friend
returned one of his calls.
"Jerry, how are
you? I hear you're looking for a loan. Come up and see me, I think I owe you a
few favors from the good ole' days. Whatever you want I'll try to help.
[BTW, as irony would have it, this friend's office was nowhere other than the
49th floor of the Azrieli center!]
Jerry, still full of
confidence, took the elevator to his friend's office, signed for the loan,
shook his hand, put the bills in his inside coat pocket and exited the office
to the plush corridor.
The door closed
behind him and he was alone, it was quiet with only soft recorded music coming
through the ceiling. Jerry began to realize the irony of it; this whole floor
could have been his! With nothing better to do he decided to walk around and
have a look.
After a few minutes
of strolling he noticed a set of stairs leading up to a large metal door, which
he ascended and opened the door. A cold autumn wind blew into his face. It was
the door leading to the roof, 'why not', he thought to himself as he went out.
Ah, it was
beautiful! From here he could see far into the distance; the Judean hills in
one direction, the wide, vast Mediterranean sea on the other. He just stood
there, thinking and trying to enjoy the weather when suddenly a loud thud
behind him startled him. A quick glance revealed that the wind had slammed the
door shut.
That broke his train
of thought, and anyway it was getting late. He decided it was time to go back.
Jerry went to the door and tried to open it, but. to his shock. it was locked!
He tried peering
from all sorts of angles to figure out the latch but he couldn't. So he began
to pound on the door and when that didn't work, to kick at it. For sure someone
would hear.
But no one did. The
wind was getting stronger and colder now and he wasn't really dressed for this.
He looked around for some object to hit the door with, to attract attention and
get out but there was none. He still had a good hour before dark; people were
probably still in their offices so he pounded, kicked and yelled but there was
no response.
'Hey, what a fool I
am!' He slapped his forehead and said to himself, "My cellular phone! I
can just call someone with my cellular phone!'
But when he took it
out he discovered that the battery was dead. Totally dead! Of all times for
this to happen!
But he didn't lose
his composure. He had to work fast. He went to the edge of the building, peered
over the small protective fence and began waving his arms and yelling to the
people far below which, after just five minutes, he realized was totally
futile. There was no way that anyone would hear him over the wind 49 floors
below.
Jerry knew he had to
remain calm. It was his only chance. Soon it would be dark and really cold. And
there was nowhere to get protection from the wind, which was getting colder by
the minute.
Suddenly he had an
idea. The money! He had 17,000 shekels in his pocket. For sure if he threw a
200 shekel note down people would look up to see where it was coming from, and
then they would see him.
He pulled out a
stack of bills, removed one, looked over the fence and threw it. He watched as
it floated crazily in the wind and finally, after several minutes, landed on
the other side of the street. He watched helplessly as someone stopped, bent
down, picked it up and continued walking.
This time he took
out five bills, 1,000 altogether and let them drop… but it was the same thing.
No one noticed them until they hit the ground, then they picked them up, looked
around for more and kept going.
He knew what he had
to do! It was his only chance! He took all the money from his pocket, tore the
band that held them neatly in a pack and with a yell, threw below as hard as he
could the rest of the sixty-five 200 shekel bills. With his last optimism he
gazed as it scattered far below him. He removed his shirt and began waving it
frantically for someone to notice.
Jerry couldn't
believe his eyes; not only did no one look up or hear his cries for help; they
were all arguing down there about who saw which bill first!
He looked around on the roof, the sun was setting, it was still light enough to
see, but he saw nothing that might help him.
He looked up at the
dimming sky and his eyes filled with tears. Suddenly he felt small and weak. He
needed help..... he was sure that there was hope. The sky said so. It was
obvious… he wasn't alone.
He yelled out,
" Oh G-d! G-d Al-Mighty! Help! Help me!" A second earlier he didn't
even believe in a Supreme Being, but now it was clear.
Suddenly his eye
caught a medium sized sack of sand and small pebbles. Why didn't he see it
before? But there it was! He dragged it to the fence, took a handful of
pebbles, said a prayer, threw it over the side and began waving his arms and
looking down again.
Sure enough, this
time it worked! People looked up and pointed and began screaming and cursing at
him. It must have been that many of them called the police because in just
moments the door burst open, police with guns drawn stormed through, put
handcuffs on him and took him to the station. He was saved!
It took some serious
explaining. He was lucky that no one was really hurt from his pebbles and, of
course, he lost the 17,000 shekel and still owed the taxes. But after a few
days they accepted his story and let him out.
Surprising all his
friends, Jerry proclaimed that it was well worth it. Not only he got saved, but
he got adjusted as well! He got a good look at how foolish he had been; the
people on the street had just taught him!
They were just like
him; all the time money was raining down they never looked up--only down for
more money. But as soon as they started feeling the pebbles hurting them, they
looked up to see where they were coming from.
Now Jerry realized
he too never looked up when he had money. At those times he felt like a god
incarnate. When he began to suffer, however, he realized he needed help to
change.
Jerry began taking
classes in Judaism and started doing the commandments also. In time, he became
a totally observant Jew.

Source: Adapted by Yerachmiel Tilles from an emailing of Rabbi
Tuvia Bolton of Yeshiva Ohr Tmimim in 5776 (2016), who states that he heard the story
years before from a good friend, who says that unfortunately he lost all touch
with "Jerry".
The connection to the weekly Torah reading, Chukas:
Rabbi Bolton teaches that we also can derive from this story an explanation for
a puzzling episode in this week's Torah reading, Chukas [Num. 21:6-9]:
Because of their constant complaining against Him, "God sent the venomous
snakes and they bit the people, and many Israelites died….Moses prayed on
behalf of the people. God said to Moses, "Make a viper and put it on a
[high] pole…" Moses [did so…and] if a person was bitten and he looked
[upward] toward the copper snake, he lived."
Explains Rabbi Bolton: The reason G-d told Moses to make a snake
and put it on a pole was not just to make the Jews look up towards Heaven, but
rather to realize that the SOURCE of misfortune and evil is also G-d, and the
reason G-d creates it is for us to transform it.
Why This Week? The 'drama' of the story connects nicely to
verses in this week's Torah reading.
Footnote: [1]The Azrieli Center is a complex of three
skyscrapers--one square, one triangular, and one round--that define Tel Aviv's
skyline. At the base of the complex lies a large shopping mall. It is (as of

property.

Swords of Iron Day 636
This week, Rabbi Pinchas Winston Shlita wrote
in Perceptions @ Torah.org the follow start for His Drasha. I decided to use it
as and Ed-Op here:
LAST
WEEK I received a forwarded email that was titled, “Joseph Goebbels Could
Have Written This in the 1930s.” They weren’t kidding. It was a page right out
of the Nazi Propaganda Playbook, except that it was current. It talked about
“good Jews” who rejected everything Zionist, and “bad Jews” (anyone remotely
supportive of Israel and its current government), against whom tactical nukes
should be used. They even blamed the war against Iran on “Zionistic genocidal tendencies.”
I
wish I could say that the person who wrote it was simply misguided, but they
said the same thing about Goebbels in his time. I wish I could say that his
opinion was only personal and represented no threat to the Jewish people, but
they said the same thing about Hitler, ysv”z, and his “magnum opus,” Mein Kampf. I would like to
believe that people like that come and go, barking a lot more than biting, but
Jewish history argues otherwise.
If
I had to amend the subject heading of the email, I would add to it: “And the
Jews of the Diaspora Could Be the Jews of 1930 Europe.” I have relatives living
in North America who see what is going on, but refuse to see the events of
today as warnings. Even as I was writing this, I got a message from someone with
a picture from a Milano, Italy, shop window, saying, “Israeli Not Welcome.”
The
Italians have never really been our allies, especially since Rome is the
headquarters of the Catholic people who have always considered Judaism a
painful thorn in their side. They’d like to believe that God changed His mind
about His chosen people and chose the Catholics as their replacement.
Preposterous, for sure, but also a good reason to go on crusades to force Jews
to convert or murder them.
It
started as early as in this week’s parsha, at the border of Edom, Esav’s descendants,
and Rome’s predecessors. All the Jewish people wanted to do was peacefully pass
through their land on the way to Eretz Yisroel. They even offered to do some business while there to
give revenue to the locals. This was Edom’s response:
But he said, “You shall not pass through!” and Edom came
out toward them with a vast force and with a strong hand. (Bamidbar 20:20)
Even
if you want to say that Edom was paranoid and didn’t trust the Jewish People to
pass through their land, still, they saw God accompanying them on their
journey. They weren’t just saying no to the Jewish nation. They were saying no
to God Himself! How crazy was that?
Nevertheless,
the Jewish nation turned away without incident. God didn’t seem to say
anything. Edom was left untouched and unbothered, but what a reaction! It was
so out of proportion to the request that others might have jumped all over it.
You can sense the deep-seated hatred of Esav for Yakov even thousands of years
later through a couple of verses.
I
remember thinking how fortunate our generation was to have escaped all the
Anti-Semitism of the past, and how much better and civilized the world had
become since the Holocaust. I felt comfortable being a Jew everywhere I went
and safe to travel anywhere I chose.
But
that was thirty years ago. I’m not surprised that Anti-Semitism has returned,
given my line of work. I even predicted it, based upon the rules of Jewish
history and the goals of Creation. I’m just surprised by how it did, and how
fast. Forty years ago, most Palestinians lived in the Middle East, and most
Islamic haters of Jews and Israel were in their home countries. Today they have
emigrated all over the Western world and, unlike immigrants of the past who
were grateful to be accepted and wanting to blend in, they resent their host
nations and want to make them like the worlds they came from.
This
has meant that millions of Jews who once lived in friendly and supportive host
countries suddenly found themselves among hostiles without going anywhere. The
hostility came to them and surrounds them. Their property and sense of
entitlement bind them there, making Jews vulnerable, once again, to their sworn
enemies.
Oh,
and please do not tell me that they are only against Israelis, and not Jews in
general. That’s like secular Jews in the early 1940s watching their Jewish
neighbors dragged from their homes and shipped to the camps thinking, “They
won’t come for me because I am different…totally assimilated into German society
with no connections to Judaism whatsoever.” Hitler and the SS begged to differ.
And
you know why? As the GR”A explained, it has nothing to do with how religious
you look or don’t, or any kind of politics. Contrary to how it may look to the
unknowledgeable, all of that is just the pretext to draw the enemies out to do
their hateful things, like Pharaoh being “inspired” by Moshe’s demands to
increase Jewish suffering. It is darkest before the dawn, especially when it
comes to Jewish history and redemption.
This sounds like my broken equipment on my
entrance into Lebanon. A Kan News report revealed that the APC's exit hatch was
broken, and soldiers testified that the commanders were aware of the
malfunctions. According to Kan, the soldiers had tied the hatch with a
rope, leaving it open, and the terrorist threw the explosive device into the
vehicle through it. Additionally, the cameras on the APC had not been working
for a long period of time. The terrorists, Musab Yasser Abdallah Jilban and Abd
al-Latif Musa Hajjaj Barbah, members of Hamas, were killed in an airstrike by
the Israeli Air Force last Thursday. https://www.israelnationalnews.com/news/411057

There is a reason why during the beginning of
the Iran ar percentage wise more missiles were shot down than at the end. In
the beginning we were shooting two arrow antimissiles and at the end one. We
