Parsha Vayelech, Yom Kippur and Repentance, a story, Swords of Iron and other news

Parsha Vayelech

We continue with Moshe’s last speech before the nation. Young and old are there including the women and nursing infants. In a short while, The HOLY ONE, blessed be HE, will extract the soul of Moshe and then cause an earthquake landslide over his burial cave so that no one will know or ever find the place. According to Kabbalistic Tradition, a spark of his soul would arise in the form of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai and the holy Ari Zal to guide Yisrael for future generations in preparation for Moshiach.

This week is the shortest Parsha in the Torah with only 30 Pasukim.

31:1 And Moses went and spoke these words unto all Israel. 2 And he said unto them: 'I am a hundred and twenty years old this day; I can no more go out and come in; and the LORD hath said unto me: Thou shalt not go over this Jordan.

There is a double meaning here. Today, I turn 120years and G-D no longer will allow me to go in or come out. I cannot join you on the other side of the Jordan in this life time. I must surrender my soul to HASHEM.

3 The LORD thy God, He will go over before thee; He will destroy these nations from before thee, and thou shalt dispossess them; and Joshua, he shall go over before thee, as the LORD hath spoken.

HASHEM shall be with you and your leader will be Yoshua.

4 And the LORD will do unto them as He did to Sihon and to Og, the kings of the Amorites, and unto their land; whom He destroyed. 5 And the LORD will deliver them up before you, and ye shall do unto them according unto all the commandment which I have commanded you. 6 Be strong and of good courage, fear not, nor be affrighted at them; for the LORD thy God, He it is that doth go with thee; He will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.'

HASHEM shall go before you and destroy your enemies. Chazak V’ Amatz (Be strong and of good courage) and this will be told to Yoshua here and through chapter 1 of Sefer Yoshua. HASHEM will be with you without fail. You shall conquer the land.

7 And Moses called unto Joshua, and said unto him in the sight of all Israel: 'Be strong and of good courage; for thou shalt go with this people into the land which the LORD hath sworn unto their fathers to give them; and thou shalt cause them to inherit it.

Moshe gives Yoshua Semicha (not rabbinical ordination which he probably had but) to rule the nation. Then in public he declared: “Chazak V’ Amatz” (Be strong and of good courage). The people will inherit the land.

8 And the LORD, He it is that doth go before thee; He will be with thee, He will not fail thee, neither forsake thee; fear not, neither be dismayed.'

There will be many battles, but fear not. Victory is guaranteed by HASHEM.

9 And Moses wrote this law, and delivered it unto the priests the sons of Levi, that bore the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and unto all the elders of Israel.

Moshe finished Sefer Devarim and handed it to the Cohanim. There is a dispute between commentators if he wrote the last 8 lines by prophecy or Yoshua filled these in and the book was sealed?

10 And Moses commanded them, saying: 'At the end of every seven years, in the set time of the year of release, in the feast of tabernacles,

This is the meeting by the Mishkan/Mikdash/Temple after Shmita in which the book of Devarim is read out loud before the entire Am.

11 when all Israel is come to appear before the LORD thy God in the place which He shall choose, thou shalt read this law before all Israel in their hearing.

The place is unspecified it could be Shilo or Yerushalayim.

12 Assemble the people, the men and the women and the little ones, and thy stranger that is within thy gates, that they may hear, and that they may learn, and fear the LORD your God, and observe to do all the words of this law; 13 and that their children, who have not known, may hear, and learn to fear the LORD your God, as long as ye live in the land whither ye go over the Jordan to possess it.'

Everybody shall hear (like today from the hewers of wood to the carriers of water or the old scholar to the suckling babe and both men and women).

14 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Behold, thy days approach that thou must die; call Joshua, and present yourselves in the tent of meeting, that I may give him a charge.' And Moses and Joshua went, and presented themselves in the tent of meeting.

They went in together and the Glory of the Shechina went from Moshe to Yoshua. Moshe still kept some sparks but the light was with Yoshua. Please note: The Shechina can fill the world and rest upon all or any of us. The Goyim translate the Shechina as Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit since HASHEM’S Glory fills the earth all the time, the SPIRIT can rest on many individuals as long as they do things for the sake of heaven. [This is one reason to be modest and covered with a blanket when having intension of producing a physical child that the Shechina can be with it in the womb and further – hence Mikvah and Family Ritual Purity.]

15 And the LORD appeared in the Tent in a pillar of cloud; and the pillar of cloud stood over the door of the Tent.

The people saw a well lit cloud hovering upon the tent. (If there were flashing colors in the cloud or not, I have no idea but can imagine something special.)

16 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Behold, thou art about to sleep with thy fathers; and this people will rise up, and go astray after the foreign gods of the land, whither they go to be among them, and will forsake Me, and break My covenant which I have made with them.

You will find rest in a burial spot unknown to all. The nation one day will commit idolatry. It can come in many forms as physical idolatry, communism, socialism, or even an observant Satmar Chassid going and spying for Iran. The Yetzer shall beguile these people in the future.

17 Then My anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide My face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall come upon them; so that they will say in that day: Are not these evils come upon us because our God is not among us?

They will claim atheism or idolatry but it is they that first abandoned G-D and now their Heavenly FATHER is punishing them.

18 And I will surely hide My face in that day for all the evil which they shall have wrought, in that they are turned unto other gods. 19 Now therefore write ye this song for you, and teach thou it the children of Israel; put it in their mouths, that this song may be a witness for Me against the children of Israel.

The hiding of HASHEM’s Face is why miracles today are not like they were in times of Moshe or Yoshua but come together violating statistics. One sometimes has to go out to search to find that the person turned their head as the bullet whizzed by or the tank/car hit a rock. Or in my case, I saw out of the corner of my eye a purple snake crossing the path of my wife and I wearing plastic slippers by the Dead Sea and I stopped her with my hand from walking in front of the moving snake. One has to open one’s eyes to acknowledge the miracle whether it looks natural or violates probability.

20 For when I shall have brought them into the land which I swore unto their fathers, flowing with milk and honey; and they shall have eaten their fill, and waxen fat; and turned unto other gods, and served them, and despised Me, and broken My covenant;

They will be wealthy and arrogant. They will become haughty. Moshe was king and the most humble man on earth. Dovid was king but before G-D he was and continued to be a simple shepherd boy singing Tehillin/Psalms of praise with the raw purity or heart/spirit (Lev=heart Bar=wild in nature).

21 then it shall come to pass, when many evils and troubles are come upon them, that this song shall testify before them as a witness; for it shall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their seed; for I know their imagination how they do even now, before I have brought them into the land which I swore.'

The song is Hazinu (next week’s Parsha) and it shall remind them, who they are and where they came from. If it will remind them that they will end up in the dust with worms clearing their physical flesh; then perhaps they will keep on the correct Torah Path.

22 So Moses wrote this song the same day, and taught it the children of Israel. 23 And he gave Joshua the son of Nun a charge, and said: 'Be strong and of good courage; for thou shalt bring the children of Israel into the land which I swore unto them; and I will be with thee.'

Chazak V’ Amatz (Be strong and of good courage). If you want to put this into a perspective it is as if Moshe is standing in spirit next to Yoshua’s Shoulder.

24 And it came to pass, when Moses had made an end of writing the words of this law in a book, until they were finished, 25 that Moses commanded the Levites, that bore the ark of the covenant of the LORD, saying: 26 'Take this book of the law, and put it by the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee.

This was the written Torah but there was an oral Halachic Torah on how the Tzitzis is arranged, the interior of the Tephillin with which Parshiyos inside, the place of ritual slaughter on animals and with what type of sharp instrument, how do we bless fruits, vegetables, etc.

27 For I know thy rebellion, and thy stiff neck; behold, while I am yet alive with you this day, ye have been rebellious against the LORD; and how much more after my death?

If you rebel while I am a live, Kal V’ Chomer (all the more so from easy to hard things) after my death.

28 Assemble unto me all the elders of your tribes, and your officers, that I may speak these words in their ears, and call heaven and earth to witness against them.

I will teach the elders (Sanhedrin) the words of the song (Hazinu) and they in turn shall teach the people.

29 For I know that after my death ye will in any wise deal corruptly, and turn aside from the way which I have commanded you; and evil will befall you in the end of days; because ye will do that which is evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke Him through the work of your hands.'

It does not matter what one can do with miracles or even make the Yarden River dry, the sun and the moon stand still, or with Shofaros knock down a walled city, you will eventually rebel.

30 And Moses spoke in the ears of all the assembly of Israel the words of this song, until they were finished:

I picture Moshe teaching Am Yisrael the song Hazinu from the beginning to the end like the Lubavitcher Rebbe taught his followers, “Ana-Ana Avdo…” (I am a servant of the Holy One Blessed be HE) until they learned it by heart. Moshe was perhaps the only person to know the day of his death and given time to depart before all.

Yom Kippur

This week is Shabbos Teshuva. (Repentance)

As we beat our breasts through the silent (moving lips in a self-whisper) “We have sinned, we have cheated, we have stolen, we double-talked …” Many add on sins that start with the same letters, “I have eaten with saying a blessing before or after a meal, I have blessed a blessing without need, mistakenly, I have been proud ..” (See the Chayei Adam for the advice); We must regret. Repentance can only occur through regretting our sin.

Perhaps the hardest repentance story I ever heard was that of Uri Zohar Ztzal. He had committed adultery with none other than the wife of his best friend, Eric. When he confessed, he caused Eric to have to divorce his wife and she also repented. Her children because Talmidei Chachamim and her boys married Uri’s daughters.

Uri was more or less the cultural leader of non-religious happy-go-lucky Jews in Israel. He produced immodest bawdy movies and was the antithesis of a religious Jew. His return to Torah Judaism moved many and in later years produced some religious films. He would go to seminar’s for married couples to try to bring them into a more religious life-style. At one such retreat (for my wife and I), I managed to share the stage with him on my own return from non-observant to Kashrus, Tahara Mishpacha (family purity) and Shabbos Observance.

Full repentance from zero observance to full observance is not easy. It takes years of rising, slipping back and falling and rising again until complete Teshuva is made.

I was reading the biography of Rabbi Noach Weinberg Ztzal on how he handed Teshuva. One student went to his father to convince him to go hear Rabbi Weinberg. The father wanted to observe Shabbos, but he liked playing Bridge every Friday Night. So Rabbi Weinberg told him he does not have to observe all 613 Mitzvos. Without that burden, he started enjoying Orthodox Judaism and within weeks started learning the 39 Melachos of Shabbos. No pressure, repent when you are ready!

Remember, it took me from the time I started believing in G-D until I was fully Shomer Shabbos about two and a third years. Slowly, but surely. Grab too much at a time and I have seen too many people fail.

A well-timed thought for Shofar Blowing by R’ Y. Tilles

https://ascentofsafed.com/cgi-bin/ascent.cgi?Name=1450-01

Before Rosh Hashanah one year in the 1950s, Chaim (not his real name) asked a family in Crown Heights, New York, near the Lubavitcher Rebbe's headquarters, if they could host him for the upcoming holy days. Chaim was anxious to participate in the Rebbe's shofar blowing during the Rosh Hashanah prayers. He had been married for nine years and he and his wife had not been blessed with children. Chaim knew that before blowing the shofar on Rosh Hashanah, the Lubavitcher Rebbe would pray for all the individuals who had turned to him for blessing. He wanted to be there, as close to the Rebbe as possible, to be blessed with a child.

Chaim's hosts advised him to get to prayers early to find a place near the Rebbe. Chaim situated himself in a good spot and waited.

The Rebbe came down to the synagogue with a number of shofars, as was his custom. The Rebbe, visibly earnest and serious, began reciting chapter 47 in Psalms seven times, as is customary before the blowing of the shofar.

Chaim said every word with the Rebbe. He was intensely focused. The congregation was absolutely silent. All eyes were on the Rebbe. All thoughts were hinged on the success of the shofar blowing.

The Rebbe said the blessing on the shofar and raised the first shofar to his lips. No sound came out. Absolute silence. He took another shofar. No sound. The anxiety in the congregation mounted. A third shofar. No sound.

Confusion and dismay filled the hearts of all those present. Chaim, who was standing near the Rebbe, remained intensely focused. He and his wife had been anticipating a child for 9 years. All his hopes were pinned on the Rebbe, that in merit of his shofar blowing, they would have children.

The Rebbe switched from shofar after shofar, attempting to blow each one, but no sound came out of any of them. The tension was thick and pervasive.

Despite all his personal pain, Chaim suddenly decided, "Perhaps my strong focus on what I need for myself is what is stopping the sounds from coming out." He thought for a few more intense brief seconds and then addressed himself to the Creator of All, "Dear G-D, I forfeit my deep intention and prayers for a child for the good of the congregation."

At that very moment, the Rebbe switched shofars again, but this time perfect sounds came out - each tekiah, each shevarim and each teruah - clear, loud and of proper length.[1] Chaim cried profusely.

One year later, Chaim and his wife were blessed with a child. After a few more years, he brought the little boy to 770 after one of the festivals to receive a bit of wine from the Rebbe's cup of blessing. On the long line, Chaim refrained from telling his story to anyone. He passed before the Rebbe. There was about a second to stand before the Rebbe before the next person's turn. The Rebbe looked at Chaim and asked, "Is this the child from the blowing of the shofar?"

Biographical note:
Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the Lubavitcher Rebbe : [11 Nissan 5662 - 3 Tammuz 5754 (April 1902 - June 1994)], became the 7th Rebbe of the Chabad dynasty after his father-in-law's passing on 10 Shvat 5710 (1950). He is widely acknowledged as the greatest Jewish leader of the second half of the 20th century. Although a dominant scholar in both the revealed and hidden aspects of Torah and fluent in many languages and scientific subjects, the Rebbe is best known for his extraordinary love and concern for every Jew on the planet. His emissaries around the globe dedicated to strengthening Judaism number in the thousands. Hundreds of volumes of his teachings have been printed, as well as dozens of English renditions.

Swords of Iron Day 717

Autumn is here. A story behind the group of soldiers killed last week. Like in the 2nd Lebanese War, food was not being delivered properly to them. Col. Avraham spoke to a platoon leader. These were young men, officer training cadets not wanting to complain but they did not get food supplied properly. Col. Avraham had his engineering brigade take care of their needs.

This is the first time in many years that I am making an appeal for my Kollel. For years we had a number of main supporters that held the Kollel together. The Israel Government gave a stipend that got lower and lower until next to nothing with a run away inflation. I donate a nice sum each year that can cover more than one student but we have much more and it is next to impossible to meet the needs.

This year we finally obtain recognized charity tax reduction contribution.  The following letter below describes how to directly donate.

Dear Friend,
We kindly invite you to take part in supporting Ezrat Achim & Kollel Beit Shlomo, which for over 20 years has been dedicated to Torah study, guidance, and community assistance.
Supporting a dedicated Torah scholar :

Lilo sent me the following about the UN on Israel. Yoel 3:1 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out My spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions; 2 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out My spirit. 3 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. 4 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the LORD come. 5 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered; for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those that escape, as the LORD hath said, and among the remnant those whom the LORD shall call. Hmmm, I wonder will happen to all those who voted for a Palestinian State?
