Parsha Ki Savo
This week we finally come to the blessings and curses that are
mentioned in Re’eh. It is the culmination of about 180 Mitzvos. We start off
this week with the Mitzvos of Eretz Yisrael namely the yearly Bikurim.
26:1 And it shall be, when thou art come in unto the land which the
LORD thy God gives thee for an inheritance, and dost possess it, and dwell
therein; 2 that thou shalt take of the first of all the fruit of the ground,
which thou shalt bring in from thy land that the LORD thy God giveth thee; and
thou shalt put it in a basket and shalt go unto the place which the LORD thy
God shall choose to cause His name to dwell there.
This starts with Chag Ha Shavuos and ends in Chag Ha Sukkos. For
cutting gain before Pessach is too early. The Bikurim comes only from the 7
species of Eretz Yisrael not other fruits which grow here such as nuts, apples,
pears, apricots, etc. other grains, or vegetables.
3 And thou shalt come unto the priest that shall be in those days,
and say unto him: 'I profess this day unto the LORD thy God, that I am come
unto the land which the LORD swore unto our fathers to give us.'
The Torah was written between 2448 to the year 2488. This Mitzvah
was given for observing after the people were settled on their portion in the
land. It would be another 15 years until the land was conquered and divided. It
would be a while until the crops grew and one could bring the Bikurim. The
Pasuk states that it will be in those days that whomever will be the Cohain at
that time will receive the Bikurim. Henceforth, this is some time after the
generation of Elazar HaCohain and perhaps after Pinchas. This means that the
Torah is not just present then but for all future generations.
4 And the priest shall take the basket out of thy hand, and set it
down before the altar of the LORD thy God. 5 And thou shalt speak and say
before the LORD thy God: 'A wandering Aramean was my father, and he went down
into Egypt, and sojourned there, few in number; and he became there a nation,
great, mighty, and populous.
We are from Yacov who started his family in Aram and moved back to
Eretz Canaan few in number until his family became a mighty nation of Eretz
Yisrael.
6 And the Egyptians dealt ill with us, and afflicted us, and laid
upon us hard bondage. 7 And we cried unto the LORD, the God of our fathers, and
the LORD heard our voice, and saw our affliction, and our toil, and our
oppression. 8 And the LORD brought us forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand,
and with an outstretched arm, and with great terribleness, and with signs, and
with wonders.
70 souls went to Egypt and millions came out. This is our history.
9 And He hath brought us into this place, and hath given us this
land, a land flowing with milk and honey.
G-D has given us this land. It is a land flowing with milk and
honey.
10 And now, behold, I have brought the first of the fruit of the
land, which Thou, O LORD, hast given me.' And thou shalt set it down before the
LORD thy God, and worship before the LORD thy God.
Not only the land came from HASHEM. But the fruit came from HASHEM
so we are giving the first pieces as an offering of thanks.
11 And thou shalt rejoice in all the good which the LORD thy God
hath given unto thee, and unto thy house, thou, and the Levite, and the
stranger that is in the midst of thee.
This is the start of our rejoicing by bringing the fruits to the
place of the L-RD (Yerushalayim nowadays not Shilo).
12 When thou hast made an end of tithing all the tithe of thine
increase in the third year, which is the year of tithing, and hast given it
unto the Levite, to the stranger, to the fatherless, and to the widow, that
they may eat within thy gates, and be satisfied,
During the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th
years of the Shmita Cycle one takes Ma’aseh Sheni which is either eaten or redeemed
with money for fruits in Yerushalayim. The 3rd and 6th
years this same amount is given either to Leviim or the poor and is named
Ma’aseh Ani.
13 then thou shalt say before the LORD thy God: 'I have put away
the hallowed things out of my house, and also have given them unto the Levite,
and unto the stranger, to the fatherless, and to the widow, according to all
Thy commandment which Thou hast commanded me; I have not transgressed any of
Thy commandments, neither have I forgotten them.
This is part of the confession made by the land owner when he
brings his Bikurim and it continues with:
14 I have not eaten thereof in my mourning, neither have I put
away thereof, being unclean, nor given thereof for the dead; I have hearkened
to the voice of the LORD my God, I have done according to all that Thou hast
commanded me. 15 Look forth from Thy holy habitation, from heaven, and bless
Thy people Israel, and the land which Thou hast given us, as Thou didst swear
unto our fathers, a land flowing with milk and honey.'
Look at me and (please) continue to bless me.
16 This day the LORD thy God commands thee to do these statutes
and ordinances; thou shalt therefore observe and do them with all thy heart,
and with all thy soul. 17 Thou hast avouched the LORD this day to be thy God,
and that thou would walk in His ways, and keep His statutes, and His
commandments, and His ordinances, and hearken unto His voice. 18 And the LORD
hath avouched thee this day to be His own treasure, as He hath promised thee,
and that thou should keep all His commandments;
This is not the first time the Bnei Yisrael are told that they are
to observe and comply with the Mitzvos but are reminded again with a new set of
blessings and curses.
19 and to make thee high above all nations that He hath made, in
praise, and in name, and in glory; and that thou may be a holy people unto the
LORD thy God, as He hath spoken.
All this is required of us in order to be a holy people as HASHEM
is holy!
27:1 And Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people,
saying: 'Keep all the commandment which I command you this day. 2 And it shall
be on the day when ye shall pass over the Jordan unto the land which the LORD
thy God giveth thee, that thou shalt set thee up great stones, and plaster them
with plaster. 3 And thou shalt write upon them all the words of this law, when
thou art passed over; that thou may go in unto the land which the LORD thy God
giveth thee, a land flowing with milk and honey, as the LORD, the God of thy
fathers, hath promised thee.
This is the first billboard. The Torah is going to be recorded on
giant boulders taken from the Yarden and plastered up for all to see and read.
Schem is literally in the heart of the country between a valley coming up from
the Yarden and then a valley going down towards the Mediterrean Sea. It is
pretty central from the Lebanese Border to Beer Sheva. This was the spot chosen
for the advertising of the Torah and for Yosef’s Tomb. Interesting he is buried
in Schem from where he was sold from Eretz Yisrael.
4 And it shall be when ye are passed over the Jordan, that ye
shall set up these stones, which I command you this day, in mount Eval, and
thou shalt plaster them with plaster. 5 And there shalt thou build an altar
unto the LORD thy God, an altar of stones; thou shalt lift up no iron tool upon
them. 6 Thou shalt build the altar of the LORD thy God of unhewn stones; and
thou shalt offer burnt-offerings thereon unto the LORD thy God. 7 And thou
shalt sacrifice peace-offerings, and shalt eat there; and thou shalt rejoice
before the LORD thy God. 8 And thou shalt write upon the stones all the words
of this law very plainly.'
In a time where paper and books were expensive and scrolls very
expensive this was a public place to read and learn Torah.
9 And Moses and the priests the Levites spoke unto all Israel,
saying: 'Keep silence, and hear, O Israel; this day thou art become a people
unto the LORD thy God. 10 Thou shalt therefore hearken to the voice of the LORD
thy God, and do His commandments and His statutes, which I command thee this
day.' 11 And Moses charged the people the same day, saying: 12 'These shall
stand upon mount Gerizim to bless the people, when ye are passed over the
Jordan: Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and Issachar, and Joseph, and Benjamin; 13
and these shall stand upon mount Eval for the curse: Reuben, Gad, and Asher,
and Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali. 14 And the Levites shall speak, and say unto
all the men of Israel with a loud voice:
This shall be (in the days of Yehoshua Bin Nun) the positions of
the tribes for the blessings and curses.
15 Cursed be the man that makes a graven or molten image, an
abomination unto the LORD, the work of the hands of the craftsman, and sets up
in secret. And all the people shall answer and say: Amen.
All the more so if he sets it up in public but that would involve
the death penalty.
16 Cursed be he that dishonors his father or his mother. And all
the people shall say: Amen. 17 Cursed be he that removes his neighbor's
landmark. And all the people shall say: Amen. 18 Cursed be he that makes the
blind to go astray in the way. And all the people shall say: Amen.
This is plain cruelty and like Amalek thus it is signaled out.
Cursing the deaf is forbidden but does not lead the deaf person astray.
19 Cursed be he that perverts the justice due to the stranger,
fatherless, and widow. And all the people shall say: Amen.
Perverting the justice given to these people. I knew a man who was
an orphan at a young age and his wife bullied him for he was weak for he never
had a backbone behind him.
20 Cursed be he that lies with his father's wife; because he hath
uncovered his father's skirt. And all the people shall say: Amen. 21 Cursed be
he that lies with any manner of beast. And all the people shall say: Amen.
This is the next “right” that the extreme left is trying to shovel
on mankind after having a lot of success with homosexuality. Both are their
Eugenics plan for controlling the world population that both Marxists and Nazis
started about 100 years ago. I even brought down some legislation and votes on
this subject earlier this year.
You might ask why wasn’t homosexuality mentioned here? The fact of
the matter is that much of the homosexual behavior is picked up in the teenage
years either in a dormitory or a high school of the same sex. By marrying off
girls at the age of 12 or so and boys at the age of 13 or so, all that part of
the Yetzer was put down. The worse came to the worse, one would take a second
wife if he could afford it or have compassion upon a widow as a second wife and
his Yetzer would be controlled.
22 Cursed be he that lies with his sister, the daughter of his
father, or the daughter of his mother. And all the people shall say: Amen. 23
Cursed be he that lies with his mother-in-law. And all the people shall say:
Amen. 24 Cursed be he that smites his neighbor in secret. And all the people
shall say: Amen.
A sneak attack which either maims or kills the person. This is the
way of Amalek.
25 Cursed be he that taketh a bribe to slay an innocent person.
And all the people shall say: Amen. 26 Cursed be he that confirms not the words
of this law to do them. And all the people shall say: Amen.'
All these are mostly between
man and man and just the first one of idolatry gets a curse and that is the
only one between man and G-D unless you say bestiality for a suicidal person
could take the beast of his fellow in order that both he and the beast die.
28:1
And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of
the LORD thy God, to observe to do all His commandments which I command thee
this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all the nations of
the earth. Pay attention what happens to people who observe the commandments. Your place is higher than all the nations and blessings will pursue you.
2 And all these blessings shall come upon thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God. 3 Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field. 4 Blessed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy land, and the fruit of thy cattle, the increase of thy kine, and the young of thy flock. 5 Blessed shall be thy basket and thy kneading-trough. 6 Blessed shalt thou be when thou come in, and blessed shalt thou be when thou go out.
You will be blessed in every place.
7 The LORD will cause thine enemies that rise up against thee to be smitten before thee; they shall come out against thee one way, and shall flee before thee seven ways. 8 The LORD will command the blessing with thee in thy barns, and in all that thou puttest thy hand unto; and He will bless thee in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. 9 The LORD will establish thee for a holy people unto Himself, as He hath sworn unto thee; if thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, and walk in His ways. 10 And all the peoples of the earth shall see that the name of the LORD is called upon thee; and they shall be afraid of thee. 11 And the LORD will make thee over-abundant for good, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy land, in the land which the LORD swore unto thy fathers to give thee. 12 The LORD will open unto thee His good treasure the heaven to give the rain of thy land in its season, and to bless all the work of thy hand; and thou shalt lend unto many nations, but thou shalt not borrow. 13 And the LORD will make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if thou shalt hearken unto the commandments of the LORD thy God, which I command thee this day, to observe and to do them; 14 and shalt not turn aside from any of the words which I command you this day, to the right hand, or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.
All these blessings from proper observance.
15 But it shall come
to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to
observe to do all His commandments and His statutes which I command thee this
day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee.
These
curses come in stages. The first ones in Bechukosai dealt mainly with the sins
from the first Mikdash period. The second set here have hidden in the
background the word Nazi according to the Bible Code. These curses come in
stages violate you get this and that. Violate more you get this, that and the
other thing. Still no repentance and you get yet still more.
This is
what happened to us. The people did not repair their bad deeds they hated one
another. At first the people of Mecca were stronger than Mohammed but one group
of Jews hated the other two so Mohammed fell upon one. Then instead of uniting
they hated each other and he could not have managed against both but he fell on
the second group and the third group was too weak. So he and his followers took
the women and most of the males died on a Kiddush HASHEM.
The
Crusades came and pillaged the Jews of Europe and destroyed the Jews in Yerushalayim.
Then came the Inquisition, pogroms, burnings in France, Inquisition, more
pogroms and this culminated in the Shoah and terror attacks. Europe hates the
Muslims but they hate the Jews and Israel more. Most of the Muslims hate Israel
so on whom shall be turn? Whom can we depend on? On our father in heaven,
HASHEM Yisborach.
These
are the days before Rosh Hashanah and it is time for love instead of hate and
time for repentance. Why are we returning to our land? Why to we merit
miracles? Because of the thousands or millions that died on a Kiddush HASHEM?
Or perhaps because we have finally reached the end of days? The later appears
to be the case. For according to tradition the world cannot exist 6000 years
without redemption.
…69 These are the
words of the covenant which the LORD commanded Moses to make with the children
of Israel in the land of Moab, beside the covenant which He made with them in Horev.
At this
point the second Drasha ends and it appears that the third begins below. Almost
all the Mitzvos have been given now. There is not much more left but now the
point is where you have been, where you are and where you are going.
29:1 And Moses called unto
all Israel, and said unto them: Ye have seen all that the LORD did before your
eyes in the land of Egypt unto Pharaoh, and unto all his servants, and unto all
his land; 2 the great trials which thine eyes saw, the signs and those great
wonders;
Remember the plagues of Mitzrayim
and the splitting of the sea.
3 but the LORD hath not given you a
heart to know, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, unto this day.
With just this, you should have
awakened to accepting the word of HASHEM. Instead you cannot see or hear of
this unto this day.
4 And I have led you forty years in
the wilderness; your clothes are not waxen old upon you, and thy shoe is not
waxen old upon thy foot.
How many of you have garments that
did not wear and tear for 40 years? How many people do you know somebody who
had travelled in the Sinai Desert 40 years and not worn out his garment or
shoes?
5 Ye have not eaten bread, neither
have ye drunk wine or strong drink; that ye might know that I am the LORD your
God.
I have sustained you says the L-RD.
40 years you ate and drank supplied by ME.
6 And when ye came unto this place,
Sihon the king of Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, came out against us unto
battle, and we smote them.
You defeated these mighty kings
without a single loss of a man. They were completely destroyed and their cities
given over to two and a half tribes.
7 And we took their land, and gave
it for an inheritance unto the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to the
half-tribe of the Manassites. 8 Observe therefore the words of this covenant,
and do them, that ye may make all that ye do to prosper.
Now just observe the Mitzvos
properly to succeed.
Rosh Hashanah is almost upon us.
John Glenn wrote in his book that some pilots prayed that they
would return from their test flights safely which is their version of our
Tephilla HaDerech. He preferred to pray for guidance. As for Jews and the day
the world is Judged we pray for our lives, health, happiness, wealth, wisdom
and happiness.
Why do we pray for so much and perhaps more bountiful blessings?
For life without health is not much with all the wealth at our disposal. Eli
Horowitz was the CEO of Teva. He built up that company from nothing to a
massive wealthy company. As he lay dying in the hospital, the doctor looked at
him and saw that it was a matter of hours. His family complained that nobody
came to relieve him of his pain. With all his wealth and manufacturing of
medicine, he could not get something to alleviate the pain.
This week, with the blessings and the curses, we see that they do
not grow on trees and come easily. One has to work at them. Tephilla, Teshuva
and Tzeduka remove the evil decree. So, prayers are short. Moshe prayed for
Miriam “G-D please cure her”. Some are long 40 days and 40 nights on Har Sinai.
The main thing is sincerity.
Teshuva is repentance. It is not I will refrain from Elul through
Hoshana Rabbah not to sin. Rather it is I will cease and desist from sinning.
When I was becoming religious some 52 years ago, I did to observe Kashrus or
Shabbos and did not know of Family Purity not that I had somebody to be impure
with. I decided to eat meat only from Kosher Animals even if it was not fully
kosher slaughtered and no more milk products with meat. This of course was not
full Teshuva but the first step in the process of hundreds of little things in
becoming religious. Oh, it would be nice to kick a habit and go “cold turkey” with
every sin. However, some smokers need a nicotine cigarette or electronic
cigarette to break their habit. Repenting too fast may be doomed to failure
while repenting slowly and daily it should be part of reality. True and
successful Baalei Teshuva do not stop all sin immediately but over the course
of time slowly weaning oneself of a bad sin or habit so as not to get
withdrawal symptoms and regret.
Tzeduka is important but sometimes those who need it go overboard.
One does not need a woman to brazenly walk through the men’s section of a
Synagogue while the congregation prays and strut around shoveling her hand or
making noise for her finance. A woman should wait modestly at the entrance.
There are those that ask for money for charity and come around a few times a
year and those that bother the giver every month. A person should give but
sometimes runs out of cash or liquidity in the modern world. The Ani in
Talmudic times did not have enough money for two meals. Today our standards are
higher and no one in the western world is really starving. However, there is a
need to pay medical costs or dental costs. The highest form of Tzeduka is
finding honorable employment for somebody. Other forms of Tzeduka can be, at
least partially, is offering a low-interst business loan for a risky business. Or
going about collecting with others for a cause such as a cancer society, heart
association, Alzheimer Research, etc. Another form of helping with employment
is raising money to pay for the education of somebody.
Give well try to find some organizations that help. Sometimes it
is getting others to give to help strangers. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/251268

Three brothers by Rabbi
Yerachmiel Tilles
In a small village deep in
the Carpathian Mountains, there lived three learned, G-d-fearing brothers: Reb
Chaim, Reb Yaakov and Reb Dovid. Reb Chaim and Reb Yaakov were devoted
followers of the Baal Shem Tov but Reb Dovid was a "mitnagid" - one strongly opposed to the
customs and teachings of the fledgling Chassidic movement.
Whenever the Baal Shem Tov
visited the village, he always asked Reb Chaim and Reb Yaakov as to the
physical and spiritual welfare of their brother. The two brothers found it
quite curious that the Baal Shem Tov always inquired about the wellbeing of Reb
Dovid. After all, it was well known that Reb Dovid had spoken demeaningly about
their Rebbe.
Once, the Baal Shem Tov
arrived at the village on a Thursday. Before he even encountered Reb Chaim and
Reb Yaakov, he inquired about Reb Dovid from the other town folk. "So how
is my adversary Reb Dovid?" he asked.
The villagers thought that
the Baal Shem Tov would be pleased with the news: "Reb Dovid is on his
deathbed and has lost the power of speech."
The Baal Shem Tov was
visibly distraught at the news and went immediately to the home of the two
brothers Reb Chaim and Reb Yaakov. He told them that it was urgent that he pay
a visit to their dying brother. The two brothers were a little upset and
confused at their Rebbe's request. "Rebbe, it might be better if you don't
visit him right now," they said.
The Baal Shem Tov accepted
their advice, but the next morning, Friday, the eve of the holy Shabbat, he
told the two brothers that it was imperative that he pray at the home of their
critically ill brother on the Shabbat.
"Rebbe," they
implored him, "even if he was healthy, he would certainly not let you pray
at his house."
Notwithstanding, the Baal
Shem Tov insisted. The two brothers, not about to get involved in trying to
fathom the hidden intentions of their holy master, a known miracle maker, devoted
their efforts to arranging for the Baal Shem Tov to use a small room in their
sick brother's house for prayers and study over the Shabbat, and to have a Holy
Ark and a Torah scroll brought there for the morning Minyan.
The Baal Shem Tov prayed
the Sabbath Evening prayers in this small room. The following morning, he
prolonged Shacharis, the Shabbat morning prayers until nearly two
o'clock in the afternoon. When they reached the time to read from the Torah
scroll, the Baal Shem Tov delayed. It seemed as if he was waiting for something
to occur. Just then, they heard a terrible, deep groan from the dying Reb
Dovid.
The Baal Shem called out to
Reb Dovid's two brothers, "Let us go in to visit your sick brother
together." When they entered the room, the Baal Shem Tov pulled over a
chair to sit next to the suffering invalid.
Reb Dovid's crying mother
sat nearby reciting Tehillim (Psalms). She leaned over
to her son and whispered "Dovid'll, a holy rabbi is here to visit
you." But Reb Dovid didn't move. She took her son's hand and placed it in
the Baal Shem Tov's hand.
The Baal Shem Tov gazed at
him with a furrowed brow. "Reb Dovid, I understand that you know how to
study Talmud?"
But Reb Dovid lay
motionless. The Baal Shem Tov repeated the same question several times, but Reb
Dovid remained silent. Finally, the Baal Shem Tov raised his voice: "Where
are your manners? I am asking you a question!?"
The pale Reb Dovid slowly
opened his sunken eyes and looked at the Baal Shem Tov. "Yes," he
whispered, "I have studied Gemara."
The Baal Shem Tov then
asked, "In which tractate does one of the sages ask another, 'Are your
sufferings welcome to you?'"
Reb Dovid replied: "In
the tractate Berachos ('Blessings'). "
"And what is answered
there?" continued the Baal Shem Tov.
"Neither they nor
their reward," he slowly answered.
The Baal Shem Tov then
asked, "Reb Dovid, are your sufferings welcome to you?"
Reb Dovid answered:
"Neither they nor their reward."
"Give me your other
hand," commanded the Baal Shem Tov.
Reb Dovid slowly raised his
other hand, and the Baal Shem helped him sit up. "Now place your feet on
the floor, stand up, dress yourself slowly and wash your hands."
Amazingly, Reb Dovid was
able to follow all four of the Baal Shem Tov's instructions. Hour by hour he
slowly regained his strength. Later, he prayed the Mussaf ('additional'
Shabbat) prayer and, with the help of G-d, he made a full recovery.
As to whether Reb Dovid
became a follower of the Baal Shem Tov, we don't know. *

This story indicates a love a Talmud Chacham for another. It is
equivalent to Rav Shach fasting for months for the health of the Lubavitcher
Rebbe although their teachings clashed. Rav Shach could not understand all his
life why the Vilna Gaon was against the Baal Tanya until after the Rebbe passed
some foolish Chassidim claimed that the Rebbe was still alive and Moshiach
(unto this day).
