With great thanks to HASHEM Yisborach, on Wednesday I became a great grandfather of a boy thanks to my oldest grandchild.

Parsha Vayikra

Vayikra is called Toras Cohanim it contains all the laws of the Korbanos. While Sefer Beresheis had only 3 Mitzvos and Shemos averaged to about 10 per Sedra, Vayikra averages about 15 or more per Sedra as compared to the average of 11.5 mitzvos per Sedra going down again for Bamidbar and the champion of course is Devarim.

This year I am writing this while on vacation at the Dead Sea and suddenly I am viewing the same Pasukim from a different angle it is amazing. If I were to keep up the comments until I am 120 years, HASHEM has blessed with help from heaven to view the Pasukim from a new and different angle year after year.

1:1 And the LORD called unto Moses, and spoke unto him out of the tent of meeting, saying:

This is a calling not so much of Moshe but the people and especially the Cohanim.

2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them: When any man of you brings an offering unto the LORD, ye shall bring your offering of the cattle, even of the herd or of the flock. 3 If his offering be a burnt-offering of the herd, he shall offer it a male without blemish; he shall bring it to the door of the tent of meeting, that he may be accepted before the LORD.

Going back to the story of Kayn and Hevel while Hevel brought the choicest fruit, Kayn sacrificed only inferior animals. So without blemish and with a high quality animal. Theoretically, it should be a choice bull or ram but no need to have THE prize bull but one that could enter into the contest.

4 And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the burnt-offering; and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him.

The laying of the hands on a Korban is called Smicha which is ordaining and the same word used for ordaining a Rav. In modern language Smicha also means blanket for a covering but the original is the laying of the hands. For Rabbanim today we don’t have the same Smicha from Moshe to Yehoshua onwards as the Romans prevented Smicha. The last one that occurred was that of Yehuda ben Baba and the Romans murdered him but his Talmidim escaped. Today all Rabbis have a weaker Smicha but it is still what we have (in that generation at the end of days). The burnt offering is the Korban Olah.

5 And he shall kill (slaughter) the bullock before the LORD; and Aaron's sons, the priests, shall present the blood, and dash the blood round about against the altar that is at the door of the tent of meeting.

One of the miracles of the Mikdash and Mishkan was that there were no flies in the area of the slaughter, sprinkling and fraying of the Korbanos. So the next time a fly comes into your home it should be a reminder and Mussar on the level of holiness before you swat or spray the pest or just let him out the window. (Reminder when I write Mussar I am first and foremost talking to myself if it effects your Kedusha so much the better.)

6 And he shall flay the burnt-offering, and cut it into its pieces. 7 And the sons of Aaron the priest shall put fire upon the altar, and lay wood in order upon the fire. 8 And Aaron's sons, the priests, shall lay the pieces, and the head, and the suet, in order upon the wood that is on the fire which is upon the altar;

There are steps in the procedure of the Korban Olah and should be done with proper thoughts of the name of the Korban, place aka the Mikdash and done in the proper time. After that there is an order for flaying and how the pieces are put on the fire of the Mizbayach.

9 but its inwards and its legs shall he wash with water; and the priest shall make the whole smoke on the altar, for a burnt-offering, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto the LORD.

The legs and the inner parts had to be washed of the blood and dirt.

10 And if his offering be of the flock, whether of the sheep, or of the goats, for a burnt-offering, he shall offer it a male without blemish. 11 And he shall kill (slaughter) it on the side of the altar northward before the LORD; and Aaron's sons, the priests, shall dash its blood against the altar round about. 12 And he shall cut it into its pieces; and the priest shall lay them, with its head and its suet, in order on the wood that is on the fire which is upon the altar. 13 But the inwards and the legs shall he wash with water; and the priest shall offer the whole, and make it smoke upon the altar; it is a burnt-offering, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto the LORD.

The Korban Olah from the flock has the exact same procedure as that from the cattle.

14 And if his offering to the LORD be a burnt-offering of fowls, then he shall bring his offering of turtle-doves, or of young pigeons. 15 And the priest shall bring it unto the altar, and pinch off its head, and make it smoke on the altar; and the blood thereof shall be drained out on the side of the altar.

The process is called Maleeka which is slaughtering the fowl with the nail of the right thumb and pinching or nipping the neck of the pigeon.

16 And he shall take away its crop with the feathers thereof, and cast it beside the altar on the east part, in the place of the ashes. 17 And he shall rend it by the wings thereof, but shall not divide it asunder; and the priest shall make it smoke upon the altar, upon the wood that is upon the fire; it is a burnt-offering, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto the LORD.

The highest grade of offering is from the cattle and keeps going lower until the poor offer some grain. Just as the olive oil is very fine, the flour used is farina grade finely ground flour.

2:1 And when any one brings a meal-offering unto the LORD, his offering shall be of fine flour; and he shall pour oil upon it, and put frankincense thereon. 2 And he shall bring it to Aaron's sons the priests; and he shall take thereout his handful of the fine flour thereof, and of the oil thereof, together with all the frankincense thereof; and the priest shall make the memorial-part thereof smoke upon the altar, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto the LORD. 3 But that which is left of the meal-offering shall be Aaron's and his sons'; it is a thing most holy of the offerings of the LORD made by fire.

Kamitza is with the three interior fingers holding some flour and the pinky and thumb trimming the excess. So the oil is part of or a complete thimble amount and the incense also ever so slight.

His fistful: One might think [that the fistful may be] full to overflowing, bursting through his fist and coming out on every side! Scripture, therefore, states in another passage, “And from it, he shall lift up in his fist” (Lev. 6:8), [i.e., only what is contained within his fist is valid to be burnt]. But since [we now know that the amount shall be only] what is contained within his fist, one might suggest that it means less than a fistful. Scripture, therefore, states here, מְלֹא, “full” [i.e., it shall be a full fist]. How then [does the kohen scoop out exactly a fistful, not more and not less]? He covers the palm of his hand with his three fingers, [and then, with the remaining thumb from above and little finger from below, he levels off any overflowing mixture, so that exactly a full measure of “three fingers” is attained]. — [Torath Kohanim 2:105; Men. 11a] This is the definition of קֹמֶׄ, a “fistful” in the Hebrew language [while in other languages, a “fistful” of something might mean four fingers full of something].

4 And when thou bring a meal-offering baked in the oven, it shall be unleavened cakes of fine flour mingled with oil, or unleavened wafers spread with oil.

With the exception of the bread of the Korban Todah (Thanksgiving Offering), every other Korban was Kosher Le Pessach.

5 And if thy offering be a meal-offering baked on a griddle, it shall be of fine flour unleavened, mingled with oil. 6 Thou shalt break it in pieces, and pour oil thereon; it is a meal-offering.

And if a meal-offering on a pan [is your sacrifice]: מִ× ְחָה ×¢ַל הַמַּחֲבַ×Ŗ Namely: If one said, “I hereby take upon myself to bring מִ× ְחַ×Ŗ הַמַּחֲבַ×Ŗ, a pan-fried meal offering.” [מַחִבַ×Ŗ] was a vessel in the Holy Temple, in which [certain] meal-offerings were baked in oil upon the fire. This vessel is not deep, but shallow. And therefore, meal-offerings made in it were hard, for since the pan was shallow, [the oil spread thin and consequently,] the fire consumed the oil [causing the product to become hard]. — [Men. 63a] And all [meal-offerings] require three applications of oil: יְצִיקָה [pouring], בְּלִילָה [mixing] and placing oil in the vessel before their preparation. — [Torath Kohanim 2: 121, Men. 75a] Fine flour, mixed with oil: [This] teaches [us] that he must mix them while they are [still] fine flour [and not mixing the oil with the already-fried cakes]. — [Torath Kohanim 2:122]

Rashi does not define if the pieces should be broken like Matzo Meal but I can assume so. I do not have on vacation Menachos with me.

Break it into pieces, […It is a meal-offering]: [The clause at the end of this verse, “It is a meal-offering,” appears superfluous. However, it] comes to include all meal-offerings baked before the קְמִיצָה procedure, to [have their קְמִיצָה performed by] פְּ×Ŗִי×Ŗָה, breaking them into pieces. — [Men. 75a]

7 And if thy offering be a meal-offering of the stewing-pan, it shall be made of fine flour with oil. 8 And thou shalt bring the meal-offering that is made of these things unto the LORD; and it shall be presented unto the priest, and he shall bring it unto the altar. 9 And the priest shall take off from the meal-offering the memorial-part thereof, and shall make it smoke upon the altar--an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto the LORD. 10 But that which is left of the meal-offering shall be Aaron's and his sons'; it is a thing most holy of the offerings of the LORD made by fire.

Of the animal sacrifices part is frayed off but the rest is the Olah on the Mizbayach. However, left-over meal and oil can be used by the Cohanim and their families and even feed their servants (which are technically slaves but not treated as I have written like in Dixie of the USA but with rights to pillows, blankets, prevention of sexual abuse and the female Jewish slave may be freed to marry her master or his son once she is educated in the ethics and ways of the household. And of course the non-Jewish slave can be freed to marry a Jew or Levy.)

11 No meal-offering, which ye shall bring unto the LORD, shall be made with leaven; for ye shall make no leaven, nor any honey, smoke as an offering made by fire unto the LORD.

With the exception of the Lechem of the Korban Todah or Lechem HaPanim there is no leavening in the Mikdash.

12 As an offering of first-fruits ye may bring them unto the LORD; but they shall not come up for a sweet savor on the altar.

The Bikurim are brought to and collected by the Cohanim each year from Shavuos to Sukkos and from the 7 species of Eretz Yisrael only.

13 And every meal-offering of thine shalt thou season with salt; neither shalt thou suffer the salt of the covenant of thy God to be lacking from thy meal-offering; with all thy offerings thou shalt offer salt.

It is customary to put salt on bread after the Bracha HaMotzei (grace before eating) and in the Mikdash/Mishkan it was a must!

14 And if thou bring a meal-offering of first-fruits unto the LORD, thou shalt bring for the meal-offering of thy first-fruits corn in the ear parched with fire, even groats of the fresh ear. 15 And thou shalt put oil upon it, and lay frankincense thereon; it is a meal-offering. 16 And the priest shall make the memorial-part of it smoke, even of the groats thereof, and of the oil thereof, with all the frankincense thereof; it is an offering made by fire unto the LORD.

There were two of the seven species that were grains and they are wheat and barley. The Omer was of Barley as it ripens earlier in the season.

3:1 And if his offering be a sacrifice of peace-offerings: if he offer of the herd, whether male or female, he shall offer it without blemish before the LORD.

Korban Shalamim all the Pessachim and Todah Korbanos were under the category.

2 And he shall lay his hand upon the head of his offering, and kill it at the door of the tent of meeting; and Aaron's sons the priests shall dash the blood against the altar round about. 3 And he shall present of the sacrifice of peace-offerings an offering made by fire unto the LORD: the fat that covers the inwards, and all the fat that is upon the inwards,

Chelev or forbidden fat cannot be eaten but must be burned. Also of course Aliya or tail fat.

4 and the two kidneys, and the fat that is on them, which is by the loins, and the lobe above the liver, which he shall take away hard by the kidneys. 5 And Aaron's sons shall make it smoke on the altar upon the burnt-offering, which is upon the wood that is on the fire; it is an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto the LORD.

There are gifts for the Cohanim from all the Korbanos except those Korbanos that are not eaten.

6 And if his offering for a sacrifice of peace-offerings unto the LORD be of the flock, male or female, he shall offer it without blemish. 7 If he bring a lamb for his offering, then shall he present it before the LORD. 8 And he shall lay his hand upon the head of his offering, and kill it before the tent of meeting; and Aaron's sons shall dash the blood thereof against the altar round about.

All Korbanos required Smicha and thoughts at slaughter on the type of Korban, place for eating and time period in which eating was permitted except of course the Olah.

9 And he shall present of the sacrifice of peace-offerings an offering made by fire unto the LORD: the fat thereof, the fat tail entire, which he shall take away hard by the rump-bone; and the fat that covers the inwards, and all the fat that is upon the inwards, 10 and the two kidneys, and the fat that is upon them, which is by the loins, and the lobe above the liver, which he shall take away by the kidneys. 11 And the priest shall make it smoke upon the altar; it is the food of the offering made by fire unto the LORD.

And the same for the goat.

12 And if his offering be a goat, … all the fat is the LORD'S. 17 It shall be a perpetual statute throughout your generations in all your dwellings, that ye shall eat neither fat nor blood.

A reminder that fat and blood are forbidden throughout all generations.

4:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying: If any one shall sin through error, in any of the things which the LORD hath commanded not to be done, and shall do any one of them:

There are three ways to bring a Korban Chatos. Either the person did not know it was forbidden, or he forgot it was forbidden, or thought that the Halacha permitted it and in the case of Shabbos or Yom Tov forgot which day of the week it was.

3 if the anointed priest shall sin so as to bring guilt on the people, then let him offer for his sin, which he hath sinned, a young bullock without blemish unto the LORD for a sin-offering.

This is the Korban Asham.

4 And he shall bring the bullock unto the door of the tent of meeting before the LORD; and he shall lay his hand upon the head of the bullock, and kill (slaughter) the bullock before the LORD. 5 And the anointed priest shall take of the blood of the bullock, and bring it to the tent of meeting. 6 And the priest shall dip his finger in the blood, and sprinkle of the blood seven times before the LORD, in front of the veil of the sanctuary. 7 And the priest shall put of the blood upon the horns of the altar of sweet incense before the LORD, which is in the tent of meeting; and all the remaining blood of the bullock shall he pour out at the base of the altar of burnt-offering, which is at the door of the tent of meeting. 8 And all the fat of the bullock of the sin-offering he shall take off from it; the fat that covers the inwards, and all the fat that is upon the inwards, 9 and the two kidneys, and the fat that is upon them, which is by the loins, and the lobe above the liver, which he shall take away by the kidneys, 10 as it is taken off from the ox of the sacrifice of peace-offerings; and the priest shall make them smoke upon the altar of burnt-offering. 11 But the skin of the bullock, and all its flesh, with its head, and with its legs, and its inwards, and its dung, 12 even the whole bullock shall he carry forth without the camp unto a clean place, where the ashes are poured out, and burn it on wood with fire; where the ashes are poured out shall it be burnt.

This is different in that the outside the Mishkan/Mikdash the skin, dung, head and burnt in a clean place.
To a clean place: Since there was a place outside the city designated for uncleanness, [namely,] to cast plague-stricken stones [which had thereby become unclean] (Lev. 14:40), and for a cemetery, Scripture needed to qualify this instance of “outside the camp” -which [in the case of Jerusalem] was equivalent to outside the city-that the place had to be [ritually] clean. Outside the camp: Outside the three camps [of the encampment of Israel, when they were set up in the desert, namely: The camp of the Shechinah, the Levite camp, and the general Israelite camp.]. Regarding the Holy Temple in Jerusalem, however, it means outside the city, as is explained by our Rabbis in Tractate Yoma (68a), and in San. (42b) To the ash depository: Heb. אֶל שֶׁפֶ הַדֶּשֶׁן, to the place where they poured out (שׁוֹפְכִין) the ashes which were removed from the altar, as it is said, “and he shall take out the ashes…outside the camp” (Lev. 6:4)..to the ash depository: Heb. אֶל שֶׁפֶ הַדֶּשֶׁן, to the place where they poured out (שׁוֹפְכִין) the ashes which were removed from the altar, as it is said, “and he shall take out the ashes…outside the camp” (Lev. 6:4).

13 And if the whole congregation of Israel shall err, the thing being hid from the eyes of the assembly, and do any of the things which the LORD hath commanded not to be done, and are guilty: 14 when the sin wherein they have sinned is known, then the assembly shall offer a young bullock for a sin-offering, and bring it before the tent of meeting. 15 And the elders of the congregation shall lay their hands upon the head of the bullock before the LORD; and the bullock shall be killed (slaughtered) before the LORD. 16 And the anointed priest shall bring of the blood of the bullock to the tent of meeting.

Like the Yom Kippur Service (the congregation hears the second Cohain say, “Achad, Achad V’ Achad, etc.”)

17 And the priest shall dip his finger in the blood, and sprinkle it seven times before the LORD, in front of the veil. 18 And he shall put of the blood upon the horns of the altar which is before the LORD, that is in the tent of meeting, and all the remaining blood shall he pour out at the base of the altar of burnt-offering, which is at the door of the tent of meeting. 19 And all the fat thereof shall he take off from it, and make it smoke upon the altar. 20 Thus shall he do with the bullock; as he did with the bullock of the sin-offering, so shall he do with this; and the priest shall make atonement for them, and they shall be forgiven. 21 And he shall carry forth the bullock without the camp, and burn it as he burned the first bullock; it is the sin-offering for the assembly.

Same procedure as with the first bull.

22 When a ruler sins, and doeth through error any one of all the things which the LORD his God hath commanded not to be done, and is guilty: 23 if his sin, wherein he hath sinned, be known to him, he shall bring for his offering a goat, a male without blemish. 24 And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the goat, and kill it in the place where they kill the burnt-offering before the LORD; it is a sin-offering. 25 And the priest shall take of the blood of the sin-offering with his finger, and put it upon the horns of the altar of burnt-offering, and the remaining blood thereof shall he pour out at the base of the altar of burnt-offering. 26 And all the fat thereof shall he make smoke upon the altar, as the fat of the sacrifice of peace-offerings; and the priest shall make atonement for him as concerning his sin, and he shall be forgiven.

We are talking about an error not demanding presents, cash for a campaign or other things. The main thing is err.

27 And if any one of the common people sin through error, in doing any of the things which the LORD hath commanded not to be done, and be guilty: 28 if his sin, which he hath sinned, be known to him, then he shall bring for his offering a goat, a female without blemish, …and he shall be forgiven. 32 And if he bring a lamb as his offering for a sin-offering, he shall bring it a female without blemish.upon the offerings of the LORD made by fire; and the priest shall make atonement for him as touching his sin that he hath sinned, and he shall be forgiven.

The leader brings a male goat and the common man brings a female goat.

5:1 And if any one sin, in that he hears the voice of adjuration, he being a witness, whether he has seen or known, if he do not utter it, then he shall bear his iniquity; 2 or if any one touch any unclean thing, whether it be the carcass of an unclean beast, or the carcass of unclean cattle, or the carcass of unclean swarming things, and be guilty, it being hidden from him that he is unclean; 3 or if he touch the uncleanness of man, whatsoever his uncleanness be wherewith he is unclean, and it be hid from him; and, when he knows of it, be guilty; 4 or if any one swear clearly with his lips to do evil, or to do good, whatsoever it be that a man shall utter clearly with an oath, and it be hid from him; and, when he knows of it, be guilty in one of these things; 5 and it shall be, when he shall be guilty in one of these things, that he shall confess that wherein he hath sinned; 6 and he shall bring his forfeit unto the LORD for his sin which he hath sinned, a female from the flock, a lamb or a goat, for a sin-offering; and the priest shall make atonement for him as concerning his sin.

This is a sin that he had no intention to enjoy sinning for either the sin was hidden from him like a dead body that he over-shadowed, or sat on a leaf and killed a mouse under it and ate from Kodesh for he thought he was Tahor but was Tumay, he only finds out later due to a witness that appeared, he has to bring the Korban.

7 And if his means suffice not for a lamb, then he shall bring his forfeit for that wherein he hath sinned, two turtle-doves, or two young pigeons, unto the LORD: one for a sin-offering, and the other for a burnt-offering. …10 And he shall prepare the second for a burnt-offering, according to the ordinance; and the priest shall make atonement for him as concerning his sin which he hath sinned, and he shall be forgiven.

The LRD made a special compensation for the poor man who sins.

11 But if his means suffice not for two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, then he shall bring his offering for that wherein he hath sinned, the tenth part of an ephah of fine flour for a sin-offering; he shall put no oil upon it, neither shall he put any frankincense thereon; for it is a sin-offering. …15 If any one commit a trespass, and sin through error, in the holy things of the LORD, then he shall bring his forfeit unto the LORD, a ram without blemish out of the flock, according to thy valuation in silver by shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, for a guilt-offering. 16 And he shall make restitution for that which he hath done amiss in the holy thing, and shall add the fifth part thereto, and give it unto the priest; and the priest shall make atonement for him with the ram of the guilt-offering, and he shall be forgiven.

Not only is a Korban necessary but also the restoration of the holy object and 20% fine increasing the value thereof.

17 And if any one sin, and do any of the things which the LORD has commanded not to be done, though he know it not, yet is he guilty, and shall bear his iniquity. 18 And he shall bring a ram without blemish out of the flock, according to thy valuation, for a guilt-offering, unto the priest; and the priest shall make atonement for him concerning the error which he committed, though he knew it not, and he shall be forgiven. 19 It is a guilt-offering--he is certainly guilty before the LORD.

This is the Asham Korban that is dependent on lack of knowledge.

20 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 21 If any one sin, and commit a trespass against the LORD, and deal falsely with his neighbor in a matter of deposit, or of pledge, or of robbery, or have oppressed his neighbor; 22 or have found that which was lost, and deal falsely therein, and swear to a lie; in any of all these that a man does, sinning therein; 23 then it shall be, if he hath sinned, and is guilty, that he shall restore that which he took by robbery, or the thing which he hath gotten by oppression, or the deposit which was deposited with him, or the lost thing which he found, 24 or anything about which he hath sworn falsely, he shall even restore it in full, and shall add the fifth part more thereto; unto him to whom it appertains shall he give it, in the day of his being guilty. 25 And he shall bring his forfeit unto the LORD, a ram without blemish out of the flock, according to thy valuation, for a guilt-offering, unto the priest. 26 And the priest shall make atonement for him before the LORD, and he shall be forgiven, concerning whatsoever he doeth so as to be guilty thereby.

The first trespass was by accident this one came from robbery and thereby there is a fine against the thief while the first case it was an accidental trespass.

Parsha Zachor

Devarim 25:17 Remember what Amalek did unto thee by the way as ye came forth out of Egypt;

Amalek was the first of the nations after Yitzias Mitzrayim to dare to attack the Bnei Yisrael. In Shemos it is called the first of the nations.

18 how he met thee by the way, and smote the hindmost of thee, all that were enfeebled in thy rear, when thou were faint and weary; and he feared not God.

Terror organizations do this so that they too are in Chezkas Amalek that they plant bombs or attack women, children and the elderly and aim rockets not at the army but at civilians.

19 Therefore it shall be, when the LORD thy God hath given thee rest from all thine enemies round about, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance to possess it, that thou shalt blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven; thou shalt not forget.

When we have a chance we shall obliterate the Amalek and their ilk.

Purim is coming this week. Tanis Esther comes first it is a minor fast but very symbolic. Those in poor health should not risk becoming worse so they should consult a doctor or Rav if permissible to fast. Even fasting for an hour or half a day is a sacrifice at times so health and life come first. I repeat the news item that I brought down last week. IT IS A MITZVAH NOT TO GET DRUNK IN A STATE THAT YOU WILL ENDANGER OTHER BY DRIVING OR THAT YOU WILL ENDANGER YOURSELF. One does not have to get so drunk as to act like a monkey and then vomit like a pig. One can instead nap and during his sleep not know the difference between “blessed Mordechai and cursed Haman” that is the feature of the day. Also giving gifts to his friends and neighbors is not the main point but to help the poor of Israel.

A Pessach Primer by Rabbi Moshe Lazarus

Glossary Issur or Issurei means forbidden or prohibited.
Chometz sometimes in Hebrew Chametz means leavening.
Magid or Maggid is to tell, say, recite.
Bedikah is to check, search.
M’vatail is to nullify.
The current practical laws particular to Pesach are divided into two basic categories. The first of these categories of laws is known as “Issurei Chometz” (Prohibitions of Chometz). These are the prohibitions of deriving benefit on Pesach from those things that are called Chometz, or of having Chometz in one’s possessions. The second category of laws pertain to the positive acts we must fulfill in order to satisfy our obligations on Pesach. These include the eating of matzah, the drinking of the four cups of wine (“Arbah Cosos), eating of Morror (bitter herbs), and Magid, which is the relating of the story of our going out of Egypt. The last, Magid, captures the actual essence of Pesach; for one must try to feel himself as though he were of the original Children of Israel who were freed from the physical and spiritual bondage of Egypt.

The prohibition of Chometz

Chometz may be defined as the resultant product of the fermentation of one of the five grains: wheat, barley, rye, spelt, and oats, after its combination with water. This process takes place chemically, approximately 18 minutes after water at 45-48 degrees Fahrenheit (approx. 8 degrees Celsius) is combined with flour of these species and is allowed to ferment. The actual visible signs of Chometz are when the dough begins to have hair-like cracks or whitening of the dough.
The prohibition of Chometz on Pesach is an absolute one, which we call an “Issur Hanoah. ” It is positively forbidden to derive any benefit through any means from Chometz. This prohibition includes a prohibition of eating, “Issur Achilah,” a prohibition of selling, or even feeding it to one’s pets. There is, of course, a difference between eating and selling, which we will discuss later.
At present there are three basic ways of removing Chometz from one’s possession:
  1. Bitul Chometz - nullification of ownership of Chometz.
  2. M’chiras Chometz - sale of Chometz.
  3. Bedikas Chometz. - searching and destroying (burning) of Chometz.
We shall discuss the three methods in the chronological order in which they are performed. Due to the seriousness of removing Chometz, all three are done; although it is possible one need not sell his Chometz (if he destroys it all). M’chiras Chometz is usually performed first. It can only be done before the end of the 5th hour of daylight of the day preceding the first Seder (the 14th of Nissan). The sale is not a sale in name only. It is a bona fide, legal sale with contract and all, in which the owner of the Chometz or his agent, who is usually his Rabbi, conducts a contractual agreement with a non-Jew to purchase the Chometz, payment of which need not be made until after Passover. There is a stipulation for non-payment in which ownership reverts back to the original owner but not retroactively. Therefore, during Pesach, the non-Jew must have access to the Chometz since is legally his. If possible, all the Chometz to be sold should be kept in one place, since the place where the Chometz is kept is sold or rented to the non-Jew along with the Chometz itself. Incidentally, dishes and pots, etc., need not be sold on Pesach and indeed should not be sold. If they are sold, they may require “t’vilas kailim” for all metal and glass utensils. It is advisable to consume all or as much as possible of Chometz on hand and destroy the remainder, thereby dispensing with the sale altogether.
It is important to note that if one does retain some Chometz and for financial reasons it would be too great a loss to destroy it, it is essential to contact his local competent Orthodox Rabbi, concerning the sale. If one is living far away, he can phone, fax or email the Rabbi, and appoint him as his representative.
The next step is the searching for the Chometz. This is done preferably beginning with dusk on the evening of the 14th day of the Hebrew month of Nissan, which is the evening before the first Seder. Those years in which the first Seder falls on a Saturday night, the Bedikah must be conducted Thursday night.
One should make the search by candlelight although some authorities allow the use of a flashlight. One may not use a multi-wicked candle since it sheds very uneven light. The owner of the house or renter of the apartment must search his home for every piece of Chometz he can find and is required to look in those places where he may have brought Chometz.
Before one begins the search he recites the blessing: “Blessed are You, G-d, our L-rd, King of the universe, Who sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us concerning the destruction of Chometz.”
The search follows, and should be a real search, not merely a perfunctory ritual. When the brocho is being recited anyone listening may be included and may aid in the search. The search should be done by men. If no man is present, a woman should search. When the time for the Bedikah arrives nothing may be started before the Bedikah is completed and even one who is learning must stop (by nightfall) to engage in the search for Chometz. Upon completion of the search, during which one should not engage in idle distracting conversation, the third part, the Bitul (nullification of ownership) is performed. There is a formula called “kol chamirah,” which is recited. However, it was formulated in Aramaic and since the nullification must be knowledgeable, those who cannot read and understand Aramaic should say this English translation instead: “All Chometz or leavening which is in my possession which I have not seen or have not removed or whose existence I didn’t know about, I am making null and void (hefker) as the dust of the earth. “At this point, the only Chometz that he owns is that which he found during the search and that which he knows about and has yet to sell or burn.
The following morning, before the end of the 5th hour of light (your Rabbi should be consulted as to the time limit), the Chometz not sold must be burned. The nullification is again pronounced with the addition of: “All my Chometz that I do know about,” following “or don’t know about” in the above formula.
It is customary to burn one’s lulav and any hoshanos left from Sukkos with the Chometz so that we accomplish the mitzvah of burning Chometz with an object that was used for a Mitzvah.
It is preferable to say it first in Aramaic and then in English but if it is too difficult to say in Aramaic, then there is no question that it is better to say it in English alone. “Kol Chamira” is not a prayer.
With the completion of the burning and verbal nullification, the prohibition of Chometz on Pesach in your possession has been remedied.
After the 5th hour, nullification does not work, rabbinically (and after the 6th hour, Torahitically). Incidentally, if Chometz is found during the first day or last day of Pesach, in Eretz Yisroel, and the first or last two days of Pesach, outside Eretz Yisroel, one must cover it with a vessel he has picked up for another purpose and, after Yom Tov, burn the Chometz. If found on the intermediate days, the Chometz must be burned immediately!
There is a widespread custom to put down ten pieces of bread before making the Bedikah. Some say that the reason for this custom is that one should not make a Brocho L’vatalah, that is, make a blessing on the Bedikah with the possibility of not finding anything. Actually, the reason for the custom stems from Kabbalah as does the number ten and not because of the possibility of a Brocho L’vatalah. In fact, there is no question of this situation since the blessing is made on the search, not necessarily on the finding of anything.
A shul or Beis Medrash requires Bedikah, as do business offices, etc.
Pockets and books should be checked for Chometz.
If Bedikah is missed at night, in the early morning of the 14th, open areas that have many windows and are well lit may be searched by the light of the sun.
The reason for the decree to nullify our ownership of Chometz that we do not know about, in the day, is for fear it was not done at night.
If we burn all the Chometz that we know about, why are we “M’vatail” the Chometz that we know about after it is burned? The Tur explains that the essential Mitzvah is to burn immediately after the Bedikah, but now that people buy or leave over bread for breakfast, the Rosh (and according to the Beis Yosef, Rashi as well) holds it is necessary to nullify again. Therefore, even though the procedure we follow is different we must still go along with the original decree.
If someone missed the Bedikah on the night of the 14th, he should do it as soon as he remembers and recite the brocho. If, however, he does not remember until after Pesach, he does not recite the brocho, but still must search.
Someone who is going away for Pesach and will leave before the night of the 14th does the following: If it is less than 30 days before Pesach, he must search before he leaves, but does not say a blessing. If it is more than 30 days before, he need not search there.

Two Real Estate Bargains by Rabbi Yerachmiel Tilles

{The doctor was a non-Jew and as yet unknown in Israel, but in the U.S. he was swiftly gaining acclaim for the unique method he had developed that offered the hope of a cure for terminal cancer patients.
Connection: Seasonal - This is the first full week of Adar B, the Jewish "Month of Mazal," and there certainly is plenty of good mazal in this story.}

Rabbi Chaim Zaid, a head of the mesivta [yeshiva for the younger teenage boys] in Yeshivas Nachalat Shlomo, located in the Kiryat Herzog neighborhood of Bnei Brak, is known to be a caring mentor. Nevertheless, his role ordinarily does not extend far beyond the yeshiva walls. But then, ten years ago, R' Chaim learned that one of his former students had been stricken with cancer. Now, beyond the spiritual support he was accustomed to extending to the boys, R Chaim offered his whole-hearted assistance in every aspect, assuming all responsibility for the necessary medical treatments and procedures, accompanying his student every step along the way.

THE MISSING MONEY
In the winter of 2009, the student, whom we will call Uriel for the sake of his privacy, aged twenty-two, was discovered to have a cancerous brain tumor, and the disease had already spread to other parts of his body. He was sent to France for expert treatment, but the doctors there were unable to control the disease. Rabbi Zaid remembers clearly the last phone call he received from France, when Uriel wept in sheer despair.
The doctors had told the family that there was nothing more they could do for him and that they could begin counting the days. But the group of dedicated askanim [community supporters] following Uriel's progress refused to despair. "We have doctors in order to heal, not to pronounce a death sentence" they declared. Accordingly, they set out determinedly to find help from another source.
They consulted many experts in the medical profession, and other knowledgeable contacts as well. While they were still weighing all their options, one of the group suddenly recalled that his sister ran a Bikur Cholim [Visiting the Sick] society in a major city in the United States.
He got in touch with her, and she immediately mentioned a name, one Professor Rich, a non-Jew and as yet unknown in Israel but in the U.S. he was swiftly gaining acclaim for the unique method he had developed himself, one that offered the hope of a cure for cancer patients who had already received a 'death sentence' from others in the medical profession. His treatment involved operating on the patient, but obviously in return for a substantial fee. In fact, his going rate was a staggering $130,000.
With their hopes raised again, Uriel's family was caught in a dilemma. There was no doubt in their minds that they had to find a way to procure the services of the only person who held out some hope for Uriel - but the amount the doctor was asking was simply beyond their means. They saw absolutely no way forward.
Further, the $130,000 was not even a complete estimate for all the costs involved. Professor Rich would also have to be brought to Israel, housed in suitable accommodations, provided with a rented operating theatre in a private hospital -- all this added on approximately $30,000 to the bill.
They did consider sending Uriel to the United States, but in the end, realized it would only cost more money, and in addition, it would have added to the strain on Uriel.
And so, the various people involved began to look for ways to raise the sum. They turned to several charity funds, but none of them could commit to such a large expense.
They turned to several leading rabbinical figures, asking for advice, and they all told them that the public could not be expected to produce such a huge sum of money. At this point, they felt stymied; there was no sign of help from any angle.
It was an agonizing situation, as they helplessly watched Uriel suffer, his condition gradually deteriorating, waiting for what now seemed the inevitable.
But after just one day passed in this way, R' Chaim Zaid received a surprising phone call. The lady on the other end introduced herself as Mrs. Abutbul, Uriel's sister. Then, to his complete shock, she informed him joyfully that they could proceed with all their plans and book Professor Rich.
R' Chaim was overjoyed but confused; what had happened? Mrs. Abutbul didn't keep him in suspense. "I decided to sell my apartment," she told him simply. R' Chaim was taken aback.
"I urged her to think it over carefully and to consult with knowledgeable rabbis, asking if she was permitted to do such a thing. After all, she had a husband and six children to consider. But she was adamant. She had already called Uriel to inform him of her decision, even before speaking to me. She also told him that she was certain the surgery would be successful and that he would recover in order to dedicate his life to Torah. For the sake of Torah, she was fully prepared to make this sacrifice. G-d would help. Afraid of what rabbis might answer, she did not even want to ask, so determined was she and so certain that the Al-mighty would not let them down."

THE CAB DRIVER
After discussing her plan with R' Zaid, Uriel's sister immediately put her Ramat Beit Shemesh apartment up for sale, asking for $130,000, with the full sum to be paid in cash. Her home was actually worth more, but since time was of the essence, her priority was to make a quick sale. A potential buyer quickly materialized, eager to snap up a bargain, and the contract was signed.
Meanwhile, R' Chaim had swung into action in order to raise the remaining sum, another $30,000. He turned to his former students in the yeshiva, now adults, and begged them to help. "We asked each one to pledge to raise 1000 shekels," he recalled.
The young men set out with great enthusiasm, hiring taxis with their own money to take them on their collection rounds.
"Professor Rich was scheduled to arrive on a Wednesday, but on that day, I had a prior commitment in the north of the country, to give a talk in a girls' school. I was on my way there when I received a call from one of my students, Yehuda, who was then out collecting. He had a question for me: The cab driver who was ferrying them from one place to the next had asked him and his friend to deliver a suitcase to a certain address. Should they do him the favor?
"I told him in no uncertain terms to refuse. I would not let my students get involved in any shady business!
A few minutes later, Yehuda called back. The driver was begging and pleading, he said. But I was adamant. Under no circumstances should he agree, I insisted, adding that if the driver wanted, he could speak with me directly, after I had given my talk.
"By then we had arrived, and I delivered my address. As I walked out of the building to return home, there was Yehuda, together with the cab driver, waiting for me! I couldn't understand what could be so important, that the driver had made such a huge detour to find me. Why couldn't he deliver the case himself? Still, I was unmoved. I went over to him and told him again that there was no way I could let my students transfer suspicious packages; surely he could understand?
"The driver didn't reply straight away, but instead took out the case in question and opened it in front of me. It was a small, expensive-looking valise - but most interesting was the contents - small instruments, knives, strange little flashlights. Then the driver tried to explain:
" 'Today, before I picked up your students, I was at the airport, where I picked up a passenger who had just arrived from abroad. A very distinguished sort of man, wealthy-looking too. I drove him to where he told me to go, but after I had let him out, I realized that he'd left this suitcase behind.
" 'Actually, by the time I noticed the case, a few hours had already passed, and I didn't know what to do. First I thought I'd open it, to see what was inside. I was kind of hoping it would be full of dollars - but instead, all I found were these strange instruments. Now what? So much time had passed that I was embarrassed to go back and look for the man, so I asked your students if they would do me the favor. The name of the person is inside, and I can tell you where he's staying.'"
R' Chaim was intrigued. He took the valise and looked for the name tag - and his face turned white. The case belonged to none other than Professor Rich, who was supposed to be arriving that day to operate on Uriel.
"Straight away I asked the cab driver to give me the address of the hotel, and we got there as quickly as we could. From the reception desk we called his room, introducing ourselves and asking if he could come down to meet us, which he did. His mouth dropped when he saw the case - he must have despaired of ever seeing it again.
" 'This case contains all my surgical equipment, for an operation I came here to perform,' he told us emotionally. 'The contents are worth maybe as much as $40,000 - but it's not just the money--these items are irreplaceable! I designed many of the instruments myself, after months and months of research and effort.'"
For a few moments, all were silent, digesting the incredible turn of events. Then R' Chaim pulled himself together -- for the benefit of his beloved student:
"I wanted him to realize that something amazing had happened, and to fill him in on the whole picture. 'Just imagine,' I told him. 'You arrived here to operate on my dear student - and then, where did you forget your valise? In the very cab that was busy transporting people making the rounds to collect money for that student! Surely you can see the Hand of Divine Providence here?
"And another thing - you probably don't know, but the operation was only made possible because of Uriel's sister - she sold her apartment to pay for it, and now she and her husband and six children have no roof over their heads!'"
The professor was stunned. He'd clearly never come into contact with such mesirut nefesh [self-sacrifice] and was very touched at Mrs. Abutbul's selfless action. He was also totally unaccustomed to viewing 'mundane' events through the prism of Divine intervention, and wasn't sure how to respond.
After having sunk deep into thought for a while, the Professor suddenly announced that he was going to forego the entire payment of $130,000!
It was like a dream," R' Chaim said. That very week, Uriel's operation took place in a private medical center in Herzliya, with dozens of his friends and family praying that the operation be successful.
And, thank G-d, it was. Uriel began recuperating. Not so long after that he was able to host a public Thanksgiving Meal in gratitude.

A FIVE ROOM APARTMENT IN JERUSALEM
Uriel's sister was immensely relieved and grateful, of course, but now she was faced with a dilemma. Although she had her money back, it was too late to re-claim her apartment; she had signed a contract, and soon she would have to move out.
She and her husband sat down to figure things out. "If we're going to move, we might as well consider Jerusalem," she began hopefully.
Her husband immediately pointed out how unrealistic such an idea was. "The money we have available is enough for a converted store-room in Jerusalem, not an apartment for a family!" he told her, trying to stop her from getting her hopes up. But Mrs. Abutbul wasn't to be put off so easily, and decided to visit a friend in Jerusalem to ask for her advice.

Why not at least see what's available, now that you're here?" the friend suggested, and so they walked to a nearby real estate agent,
When the agent heard the sum Mrs. Abutbul had at her disposal, he just laughed. Disappointed, they left the office and started to wander around the nearby streets aimlessly, when all of a sudden, they noticed a For Sale sign on a building. The two friends exchanged glances.
"Nu, why not?" the friend said, and so they knocked on the door. A woman opened for them and ushered them inside. It was a five-room apartment, in excellent condition. But the price?
"I'll have to ask my husband," she told them. "I'll call him now, and he'll be here soon. Please sit down while you wait."
Sure enough, within a few minutes the owner arrived, and immediately began to list the advantages of his apartment, the dimensions, the directions it faced. Mrs. Abutbul needed no convincing -- she already loved the apartment -- but the real question was, what was the asking price?
"Three hundred and ten thousand dollars," was the reply.
Mrs. Abutbul just sighed. Of course she had known that it was impossible - but even so.... Regretfully she admitted that she had less than half the amount the apartment was worth.
The owner was clearly displeased. Turning to his wife, he asked her in annoyance why she had bothered to call him home for a couple of jokers. Upset that the wife was now being blamed for her own actions, Mrs. Abutbul tried to explain, and in her doing so the whole story came out: how she had come to sell her home in Beit Shemesh for less than the market price, how she didn't need the money in the end...
The owner didn't let her finish, but interrupted in mid-stream: "You sold your apartment to pay for your brother's operation? Are you Mrs. Abutbul, by any chance?" he demanded to know.
"Yes," she said quietly, amazed that he knew her name.
"And do you know who I am? I am the cab driver who found Professor Rich's precious suitcase! I just can't believe this turn of events -- that you should have come to my house, wanting to buy it!"
They all stood in shock, silent, staring at each other.
The owner continued: "And why am I selling such a good apartment? My mother passed away recently, and she left me a private villa in a quiet settlement. So we are moving there. I just have to call Rabbi Chaim Zaid right now, to tell him all of this!"
He dialed the number, and as soon as R Chaim answered, the words burst out of his mouth: "You won't believe this, Kavod Harav [honorable Rabbi]. Uriel's sister is right now in my apartment, wanting to buy it! Of course, she doesn't have the necessary amount, but maybe I should sell it to her for what she has anyway, for less than half of the market price? What does the Rav say?"
"I told him not to be in such a rush to decide," R Chaim continued his narrative. "I suggested that we go together to a major rabbinical figure, to ask for advice and a blessing. I suggested the well-known rabbinical leader, Rabbi David Abuchatzeira, the grandson of Baba Sali and the chief Rabbi of Nahariya, as I often did.
The very next day we travelled together to Nahariya. We recounted the whole story, from beginning to end. The rabbi advised the driver to sell for the low price, promising that in reward he and his wife would live long, healthy lives.
"And that is the end of the story, I guess," R Chaim concluded. "The Rav himself was very moved by it. He said that it was one of the most incredible examples of Divine Providence that he had encountered in years."
