Parsh Shelach Lecha, stories within the commentary as fringe benefits, news

Parsha Shelach Lecha

Am Yisrael is ready to enter the land. Moshe is told to send men to spy out the land. Intelligence is needed on roads, water sources, cities, fortifications and the size of the enemy. Moshe had maybe no experience in running a spy system. He sent out spies with no training in intelligence or secrecy. They should have reported quietly to Moshe this was not supposed to be a press conference upon their return. Instead what should have been a wonderful report turned into such a disaster that the generation was punished and did not enter the land.

13:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 'Send thou men, that they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel; of every tribe of their fathers shall ye send a man, everyone a prince among them.' 3 And Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran according to the commandment of the LORD; all of them men who were heads of the children of Israel. …16 These are the names of the men that Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua.

The added Yud from HASHEM’s name saved Yehoshua from the advice of the 10. Kalev prayed at the tomb of the Patriarchs and was saved but the rest perished.

17 And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said unto them: 'Get you up here into the South, and go up into the mountains; 18 and see the land, what it is; and the people that dwell therein, whether they are strong or weak, whether they are few or many; 19 and what the land is that they dwell in, whether it is good or bad; and what cities they are that they dwell in, whether in camps, or in strongholds; 20 and what the land is, whether it is fat or lean, whether there is wood therein, or not. And be ye of good courage, and bring of the fruit of the land.'

Nothing wrong with this normal spying questions.

Now the time was the time of the first-ripe grapes.

I have a few different types of grapes in my garden. The first ripen the last week of June or the first week of July. The majority of grapes ripen late July or early August and the grapes of Chevron towards the end of September. Since the spies made their report on Tisha B’Av the most likely scenario was the first two types of grapes that I have in my garden. I have seen grape clusters in photos if they have not been photoshopped that are the size of the standard picture of two men holding the grapes. However, before my eyes I have not seen large grapes and since I am in a city area I cannot afford the water bill that would produce larger even standard sized grapes.

21 So they went up, and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehob, at the entrance to Hamath.

This is in the northern part of Syria and famous for hot springs. It is at the top end of the Syrian African Ridge.

22 And they went up into the South, and came unto Hebron; and Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were there. Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.

As slaves in Egypt the people did not get the best of food and probably were shorter than their generation. The rich foods of Eretz Canaan produced the Anak or giants unless they all had the giant genes in them.

23 And they came unto the valley of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bore it upon a pole between two; they took also of the pomegranates, and of the figs.

These trees do not require much water as in my garden but I produce inferior size pomegranates and figs as compared to those growing by streams and subsidized farming water. The climate was different at this time and we see in Yeshayahu that the earth shifted (sundial moved by degrees). I assume that Israel was north of where it is today and the earth shifted on its axis so that the rainy season changed. 38:8 behold, I will cause the shadow of the dial, which is gone down on the sun-dial of Ahaz, to return backward ten degrees.' So the sun returned ten degrees, by which degrees it was gone down.

24 That place was called the valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the children of Israel cut down from thence. 25 And they returned from spying out the land at the end of forty days. 26 And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land.

Moshe is your Rabbi. What are you doing speaking out of turn? Bring the fruit to the Rabbi and let him decide how to lecture the people.

27 And they told him, and said: 'We came unto the land whither thou sent us, and surely it flows with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.

Now was the time for the spies to shut their mouths.

28 Howbeit the people that dwell in the land are fierce, and the cities are fortified, and very great; and moreover we saw the children of Anak there.

Defense is a sign of weakness. When Israel has to spend billions on fortifications underground against Hamas tunnels and the Iron Dome System, Hamas rightful sees us as weak. They have only to send over cheap rockets and explosives in their offense. The very fact that they had fortified cities show that they are afraid of a people in the desert without any fortifications. The people are so fierce that they hide in fortified walls but we have HASHEM on our side.

29 Amalek dwells in the land of the South; and the Hittite, and the Jebusite, and the Amorite, dwell in the mountains; and the Canaanite dwells by the sea, and along by the side of the Jordan.'

This only proves that the land is capable of supporting and sustaining these people. For after the rape of the land by Rome, for past the time of Samuel Clemens it was a very barren land that could not support too many people. In fact, all the more so the current 9,000,000 living in the land and by 2048 CE, the population is expected to be 17,000,000.

30 And Caleb stilled the people toward Moses, and said: 'We should go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.'

These fortified cities have population but they are no match for 600,000 armed men and not trained warriors like the Egyptians. With the help of HASHEM, WHO defeated the whole Egyptian Army, we will defeat these men too and readily conquer the land.

31 But the men that went up with him said: 'We are not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.' 32 And they spread an evil report of the land which they had spied out unto the children of Israel, saying: 'The land, through which we have passed to spy it out, is a land that eats up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of great stature.

There were funerals for their local kings so that the spies passed through the land unnoticed by these people.

33 And there we saw the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, who come of the Nephilim; and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.'

Not in their sight but in our sight. Not only this exaggeration making people think that the giants were the supersize of a Godzilla from a horror movie. Of course they would panic. This lie scared any normal man.

14:1 And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night.

The spies told their report on Tisha B’Av and since then the Bnei Yisrael have whined on this night.

2 And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron; and the whole congregation said unto them: 'Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would we had died in this wilderness! 3 And wherefore doth the LORD bring us unto this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will be a prey; were it not better for us to return into Egypt?'

The people remember the old country in Egypt. It was a horrible place but that is where they grew up and knew no other. So they began to yearn for their days in Egypt. Their slave mentality took over from their freeman mentality. Or as we say in English, Each one had a yellow streak running down his back.

4 And they said one to another: 'Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.'

After getting free with miracles and having a Mishkan with a fire that came from heaven, they want to go back to slavery! You can imagine how Moshe and Aaron felt. The two of them could have escaped Egypt alone.

5 Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel. 6 And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Yephunneh, who were of them that spied out the land, rent their clothes. 7 And they spoke unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying: 'The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceeding good land.

We have seen this beautiful land that has tremendous fruits and is flowing with milk and date honey.

8 If the LORD delight in us, then He will bring us into this land, and give it unto us--a land which flows with milk and honey. 9 Only rebel not against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us; their defense is removed from over them, and the LORD is with us; fear them not.'

They are weak with a bunker mentality (like Saddam Hussein) and can be easily overcome with the help of HASHEM.

10 But all the congregation bade stone them with stones, when the glory of the LORD appeared in the tent of meeting unto all the children of Israel.

The Aggadah of Medrash Rabbah on Lamentations and elsewhere in the Gemara says that 15,000 people did not die in the years of traveling in the desert on the last Tisha B’Av and this makes sense that a few righteous would listen to Yehoshua and Kalev. The fact that the Shechina appeared saved the leaders from stoning but the panicked masses.

11 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'How long will this people despise Me? and how long will they not believe in Me, for all the signs which I have wrought among them? 12 I will smite them with the pestilence, and destroy them, and will make of thee a nation greater and mightier than they.'

Immediately, on the spot, the 10 spies died. The plague began to pass through the camp.

13 And Moses said unto the LORD: 'When the Egyptians shall hear--for Thou brought up this people in Thy might from among them-- 14 they will say to the inhabitants of this land, who have heard that Thou LORD art in the midst of this people; inasmuch as Thou LORD art seen face to face, and Thy cloud stands over them, and Thou go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night; 15 now if Thou shalt kill this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of Thee will speak, saying: 16 Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which He swore unto them, therefore He hath slain them in the wilderness.

Therefore if you kill off these people, you will end up with a Chillul HASHEM.

17 And now, I pray Thee, let the power of the LORD be great, according as Thou hast spoken, saying: 18 The LORD is slow to anger, and plenteous in lovingkindness, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, upon the third and upon the fourth generation.

Please L-RD for your sake remember your own Midos that you are slow to anger and forgiving, etc.

19 Pardon, I pray Thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of Thy lovingkindness, and according as Thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.'

Please forgive these people for they err.

20 And the LORD said: 'I have pardoned according to thy word.

This section we say after Kol Nidre on the evening of Yom Kippur. So that it is possible even for these rebellious ones to be forgiven.

21 But in very deed, as I live--and all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD-- 22 surely all those men that have seen My glory, and My signs, which I wrought in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have put Me to proof these ten times, and have not hearkened to My voice; 23 surely they shall not see the land which I swore unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that despised Me see it. 24 But My servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed Me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it.

Kalev is mentioned before Yehoshua as Yehoshua was a Talmid in the complete sense a true Chassid of Moshe Rabbaynu and Kalev was a simple G-D fearing Jew.

25 Now the Amalekite and the Canaanite dwell in the Vale; tomorrow turn ye, and get you into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.'

With these cowards, it is possible to go up to the land until the younger free generation grows up. Taken them back to the wilderness and the safety of the desert.

26 And the LORD spoke unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying: 27 'How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, that keep murmuring against Me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they keep murmuring against Me.

From here the Rabbis derived that a Minyan is 10 people for the 10 spies were called a Congregation.

28 Say unto them: As I live, says the LORD, surely as ye have spoken in Mine ears, so will I do to you: 29 your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness, and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, ye that have murmured against Me; 30 surely ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I lifted up My hand that I would make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Yephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.

Here Yehoshua is called out by name that he shall live and Kalev is still mentioned first as he did this on his own merit without the blessing that Yehoshua received from Moshe.

31 But your little ones, that ye said would be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have rejected.

Just the opposite of what you fools thought that your little ones will not be prey. They will grow as your carcasses liter the wilderness. Your little ones will fight to liberate the land from the people of Canaan.

32 But as for you, your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness. 33 And your children shall be wanderers in the wilderness forty years, and shall bear your strayings, until your carcasses be consumed in the wilderness.

Measure for measure is a principle in heaven.

34 After the number of the days in which ye spied out the land, even forty days, for every day a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know My displeasure. 35 I the LORD have spoken, surely this will I do unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against Me; in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.'

There then came some men from Ephraim that wanted to go up but did not realize that HASHEM opposed them. Moshe warns them, they die and become dry bones in the desert from their defeat in battle.

… 15:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them: When ye are come into the land of your habitations, which I give unto you, 3 and will make an offering by fire unto the LORD, a burnt-offering, or a sacrifice, in fulfilment of a vow clearly uttered, or as a freewill-offering, or in your appointed seasons, to make a sweet savor unto the LORD, of the herd, or of the flock; 4 then shall he that brings his offering present unto the LORD a meal-offering of a tenth part of an ephah of fine flour mingled with the fourth part of a hin of oil; 5 and wine for the drink-offering, the fourth part of a hin, shalt thou prepare with the burnt-offering or for the sacrifice, for each lamb. 6 Or for a ram, thou shalt prepare …9 then shall there be presented with the bullock … 14 And if a stranger sojourn with you, or whosoever may be among you, throughout your generations, and will offer an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto the LORD; as ye do, so he shall do. 15 As for the congregation, there shall be one statute both for you, and for the stranger that sojourns with you, a statute forever throughout your generations; as ye are, so shall the stranger be before the LORD. 16 One law and one ordinance shall be both for you, and for the stranger that sojourn with you.

The above section is on Korbanos and the various proportions of wine and oil to bring.

17 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 18 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them: When ye come into the land whither I bring you, 19 then it shall be, that, when ye eat of the bread of the land, ye shall set apart a portion for a gift unto the LORD. 20 Of the first of your dough ye shall set apart a cake for a gift; as that which is set apart of the threshing-floor, so shall ye set it apart. 21 Of the first of your dough ye shall give unto the LORD a portion for a gift throughout your generations.

In addition to Teruma and Maaser when you bake bread you shall take Challah and give it to the Cohain.

22 And when ye shall err,

If it is the congregation both a burn Olah and sin Chatas offering is devoted if not a Korban Chatas for the individual.

32 And while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering sticks upon the Sabbath day. 33 And they that found him gathering sticks brought him unto Moses and Aaron, and unto all the congregation. 34 And they put him in ward, because it had not been declared what should be done to him.

This was the first time since Sinai that one person violated the holy Shabbos. Since the Congregation had been warned this was not Shogeg (my accident) but a knowing violation of Shabbos and they did not know his punishment.

35 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'The man shall surely be put to death; all the congregation shall stone him with stones without the camp.' 36 And all the congregation brought him without the camp, and stoned him with stones, and he died, as the LORD commanded Moses.

This is what an individual deserves who violates Shabbos. But our modern society is so sick with trying to imitate the Goyim that these people are more Shogeg as they grew up free but with Goyishe ideas and concepts in their heads. They are like enslaved unto this way of life otherwise we would have to rise up and execute them for Mayzid. But here their education has made them Shogeg.

37 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 38 'Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them throughout their generations fringes in the corners of their garments, and that they put with the fringe of each corner a thread of blue.

We don’t have 4 cornered garments nowadays and have to wear a special garment to put on Tzitzis. The blue Tzitzis are not wound around like the only white Tzitzis. However, many Gedolei Torah do not wear blue fringes because we are uncertain how they were made. There is a good educated guess but until I see my Rabbis wearing Fringes or even the Gedolim who will take over as our Sages rest their souls, I see no reason to buy special blue fringes.

39 And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the LORD, and do them; and that ye go not about after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye use to go astray;

Shimshon went after his heart and eyes and the Plishtim blinded him. One has to look upon the fringes and remember them. There is a story in Tractate Sanhedrin of a man who paid money to see the most famous “lullaby lady” of her day. She was so rich from this that she had gold steps made to get to her. As he went up the steps he started to undress until he came to his Tzitzis. He stopped sat down on the ground and cried and repented. The woman was curious as to what blemish he saw in her. He told her that she was the most beautiful creature he had ever seen. However, his G-D forbade this behavior. She enquired about his religion. She sold her possession donated to various charities converted and married him. [Recently there was a case of a woman who starred in certain movies under the name Jenna Jameson. She converted and became an Orthodox Jew. – the moral of these stories is that the true value of life is the fear of HASHEM.]

40 that ye may remember and do all My commandments, and be holy unto your God. 41 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am the LORD your God.

This is the sole purpose today for wearing Tzitzis so that in a moment of weakness of the flesh to sin that we remember the L-RD our G-D and refrain.

When the right and the left came together to help fellow Jews

In the late 1950s, at a time when the Iron Curtain was almost impenetrable, I served as the first secretary of the Israeli Embassy in Moscow. While officially I was playing a diplomatic role, I was actually tasked by the Israeli government with creating a link with the Jews trapped in the USSR. During those harsh times, I and my colleagues at the embassy tried to contact Jews throughout the fifteen republics of the Soviet Union, meeting primarily in synagogues — wherever they existed — as well as in safe houses maintained by the Chabad underground. We realized, of course, that we were taking huge risks with our own safety and with the safety of those whom we met, because at that time the practice of Judaism was considered a nationalistic activity and therefore an act of rebellion against the Communist regime. Even to possess a Hebrew Bible or a Jewish prayer book was viewed as anti-Soviet. Why anti-Soviet? Because the Hebrew Bible and the Jewish prayer book both speak about the yearning for Zion. To yearn for Zion was to deny that the Communist state was a paradise on earth. We, the Zionists of the Israeli Embassy, were indeed guilty of this crime. We did want the Jews of the USSR to identify with the Jewish nation. We did want these oppressed people to awaken to their right as Jews to return to their ancestral homeland. And we knew that our work was illegal from the Soviet perspective. Still, even though it was dangerous, we persevered. We distributed thousands of miniature Jewish prayer books and miniature Hebrew bibles — so as to make them easier to hide — as well as other religious and non-religious articles, such as Jewish newspapers and calendars. Our main job, wherever we went, was to connect with the local Jews. We had no idea exactly where they were, though we had reason to believe there were three to four million of them scattered throughout the Soviet Union. Wherever we went, we first tried to find the local synagogue. Unfortunately, most of them had been shut down, and the few that remained open were empty showplaces, intended to demonstrate to the world that the Soviet Union was not oppressive and respected the civil rights of ethnic minorities. Since these few synagogues had been infiltrated by KGB informants, most Jews feared being seen in them and losing their jobs, at best, or being sent to prison, at worst. Only a few elderly people, who had nothing left to fear, would still attend. In our search to locate the Jews of the USSR, over and over again, we came across the Chabad underground movement. Like us, the Lubavitchers wanted the Jews of the USSR to connect with their Jewish identity — they wanted to keep the Jewish spark alive — although more in the religious sense than what we had in mind. Nonetheless, we worked hand-in-hand, although at a much greater risk for them because we could invoke diplomatic immunity if we were caught. Of course, we’d be thrown out of the country, but we would not be thrown in prison. That’s exactly what would happen to the Chabad emissaries if they were caught. This is why we were very careful not to expose them. We would contact them through intermediaries, seeking only to assist them in their work and provide the resources they needed. After doing this for three years, I returned to Israel where I was directed by Shaul Avigur, the head of Nativ (the arm of the Israeli government behind our covert efforts in the USSR), to write a book about my experiences. This I did, and the result was Between the Hammer and the Sickle. Shaul Avigur also directed me to meet the man who led the Chabad underground movement in Russia. And this I also did — I went to New York to meet the Lubavitcher Rebbe.

My meeting with the Rebbe, which lasted many hours, took place in Yiddish. And I must say, first of all, that the Rebbe was a most impressive man —welcoming and very friendly — but also a very savvy underground leader. He first put me through a cross-examination that went something like this: “Did you visit Tashkent?” “Yes, I was in Tashkent.” “Is it a big city?” “Yes.” “Are there Jews in Tashkent?” “Yes, there are Jews in Tashkent.” “Many Jews?” “I think there are about thirty or forty thousand.” “Do they have a synagogue?” “Yes, they have two.” “Did you attend services in Tashkent?” “Yes, I did.” “When?” “Shabbat day.” “Did they call you up to the Torah?” “Yes.” “When you were called up, did the cantor read the Torah well?” I said, “He read it very well,” and I added, “He had a red beard.” Now the Rebbe was pleased: “A red beard, and he read well!” That was really the bit of information that the Rebbe was searching for. If I had met the cantor with the red beard, I had met Chabad’s contact in Tashkent. He asked me similar questions about cities across the entire Soviet map, until he was satisfied that I had been trusted by the Chabad underground. I found his manner of questioning quite intriguing. He had acquired the information he needed, but it could never be repeated in a way that could expose any details to the wrong people. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust me — he did. But I believe he was taking appropriate precautionary measures, as the leader of a secret underground must. After he had questioned me at length about the state of the synagogues and Jewish communities in various cities, he also asked me about the state of the Soviet Union in general. He was exceptionally well-informed about every aspect of life in the country — both economic and social — but nonetheless, he wanted to hear my assessment of the situation. He was curious about the double economy — the official economy and the black-market economy — and how that affected politics and life in general. During that conversation I felt that I had found a quick path to the Rebbe’s heart and the Rebbe to mine. We both cared deeply about the fate of the Jews of the Soviet Union.

We both wanted to help these three or four million Jewish souls and to see them released from their oppression. To this extent our aims were completely identical, even if the Rebbe approached the situation from the religious perspective and I from the political perspective. When our conversation was over, he blessed me in my new endeavor — which was to supervise the building of the new city of Arad in Israel — and I left with very pleasant feelings. Indeed, I considered it a great merit to have met him and spent that time with him.
