Parsha Bo Part 1, Story, 4 minute survivor story, news and views


 
Got back from my working vacation to Eilat. About 20 minutes later we got a call that both my brother- in-Law Zev ben Rachel and my mother-in-law on prayer list had to go to the hospital. I had to stop work on the last plague and first born will continue next week ble neder.

Parsha Bo Part 1





Come to me I am by Pharaoh. So it becomes in Hebrew come to Pharaoh.
10: 1 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Go in unto Pharaoh; for I have hardened his heart, and the heart of his servants, that I might show these My signs in the midst of them;


Pharaoh is human he cannot harden his heart or do anything without ME.

2 and that thou may tell in the ears of thy son, and of thy son's son, what I have wrought upon Egypt, and My signs which I have done among them; that ye may know that I am the LORD.'

All these signs are not only for your freedom now but will hold the generations together through good times and bad and your children and their children unending will hear the story.

3 And Moses and Aaron went in unto Pharaoh, and said unto him: 'Thus says the LORD, the God of the Hebrews: How long wilt thou refuse to humble thyself before Me? let My people go, that they may serve Me. 4 Else, if thou refuse to let My people go, behold, to-morrow will I bring locusts into thy border; 5 and they shall cover the face of the earth, that one shall not be able to see the earth; and they shall eat the residue of that which is escaped, which remains unto you from the hail, and shall eat every tree which grows for you out of the field; 6 and thy houses shall be filled, and the houses of all thy servants, and the houses of all the Egyptians; as neither thy fathers nor thy fathers' fathers have seen, since the day that they were upon the earth unto this day.' And he turned, and went out from Pharaoh.

This is also Mussar contained within the prophecy. Pharaoh is not moved at this point.

7 And Pharaoh's servants said unto him: 'How long shall this man be a snare unto us? let the men go, that they may serve the LORD their God, know thou not yet that Egypt is destroyed?'

However, after 7 previous plagues, the ministers and advisors to Pharaoh are beginning to believe in the Bnei Yisrael and Moshe. They convince him to ask for Aaron and Moshe back.

8 And Moses and Aaron were brought again unto Pharaoh; and he said unto them: 'Go, serve the LORD your God; but who are they that shall go?'

The first part of the sentence sounds good until Pharaoh adds the ‘but’ that places restrictions.

9 And Moses said: 'We will go with our young and with our old, with our sons and with our daughters, with our flocks and with our herds we will go; for we must hold a feast unto the LORD.' 10 And he said unto them: 'So be the LORD with you, as I will let you go, and your little ones; see ye that evil is before your face.

You have wicked intent to go with everybody and flee Mitzrayim.

11 Not so; go now ye that are men, and serve the LORD; for that is what ye desire.' And they were driven out from Pharaoh's presence.

Moshe and Aaron are driven away from Pharaoh with anger.

12 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Stretch out thy hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts, that they may come up upon the land of Egypt, and eat every herb of the land, even all that the hail hath left.' …15 For they covered the face of the whole earth, so that the land was darkened; and they did eat every herb of the land, and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left; and there remained not any green thing, either tree or herb of the field, through all the land of Egypt. 16 Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron in haste; and he said: 'I have sinned against the LORD your God, and against you.

After the trees and plants were eaten up then Pharaoh realizes that he sinned a bit late.

17 Now therefore forgive, I pray thee, my sin only this once, and entreat the LORD your God, that He may take away from me this death only.' 18 And he went out from Pharaoh, and entreated the LORD. 19 And the LORD turned an exceeding strong west wind, which took up the locusts, and drove them into the Red Sea; there remained not one locust in all the border of Egypt. 20 But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he did not let the children of Israel go.

Without HASHEM hardening his heart, Pharaoh would have caved it.


21 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Stretch out thy hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even darkness which may be felt.'



As with plagues 3 and 6, the ninth plague comes unannounced. The darkness was not from this world but from Gehennom.



… 24 And Pharaoh called unto Moses, and said: 'Go ye, serve the LORD; only let your flocks and your herds be stayed; let your little ones also go with you.'



I want collateral that you shall return.



25 And Moses said: 'Thou must also give into our hand sacrifices and burnt-offerings, that we may sacrifice unto the LORD our God. 26 Our cattle also shall go with us; there shall not a hoof be left behind; for thereof must we take to serve the LORD our God; and we know not with what we must serve the LORD, until we come thither.'



Many times Jews do not make Aliyah because of potential financial loss and Moshe did not want this to happen.



27 But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he would not let them go. 28 And Pharaoh said unto him: 'Get thee from me, take heed to thyself, see my face no more; for in the day thou see my face thou shalt die.' 29 And Moses said: 'Thou hast spoken well; I will see thy face again no more.'



Moshe never saw Pharaoh again and Pharaoh would return home in a little over a month to a poorer Egypt without his first born and his 600 chariot army.



11: 1 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Yet one plague more will I bring upon Pharaoh, and upon Egypt; afterwards he will let you go hence; when he shall let you go, he shall surely thrust you out hence altogether.





After this plague, you will be thrust out of Mitzrayim.





2 Speak now in the ears of the people, and let them ask every man of his neighbor, and every woman of her neighbor, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold.' 3 And the LORD gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians. Moreover, the man Moses was very great in the land of Egypt, in the sight of Pharaoh's servants, and in the sight of the people.



All the Egyptians willing gave to the Bnei Yisrael gold and silver in order to find favor in the sight of G-D. [But when the Gezaira is the opposite, my grandparents gave their silver to neighbors to guard and after the war (WWII), the lovely neighbors wanted the full value of the silver to get it back.]



4 And Moses said: 'Thus says the LORD: About midnight will I go out into the midst of Egypt; 5 and all the first-born in the land of Egypt shall die, from the first-born of Pharaoh that sits upon his throne, even unto the first-born of the maid-servant that is behind the mill; and all the first-born of cattle.



Why was it called ‘about midnight’ when the Holy One Blessed be HE came precisely at midnight? For the Egyptians may have been off in their calculations and it would bring about a Chillul HASHEM.



6 And there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as there hath been none like it, nor shall be like it any more. 7 But against any of the children of Israel shall not a dog whet his tongue, against man or beast; that ye may know how that the LORD doth put a difference between the Egyptians and Israel.



The dog was given the right to eat Trafe and Nevaillah as a reward for this.



8 And all these thy servants shall come down unto me, and bow down unto me, saying: Get thee out, and all the people that follow thee; and after that I will go out.' And he went out from Pharaoh in hot anger.



Not only will I not see thy face anymore but your servants will bow down to me.



9 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Pharaoh will not hearken unto you; that My wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt.' 10 And Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh; and the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he did not let the children of Israel go out of his land.



I will make MY NAME great through you.


12:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying: 2 'This month shall be unto you the beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year to you.

If you recall the first Rashi in the Torah: In the beginning: Said Rabbi Isaac: It was not necessary to begin the Torah except from “This month is to you,” (Exod. 12:2) which is the first commandment that the Israelites were commanded, (for the main purpose of the Torah is its commandments, and although several commandments are found in Genesis, e.g., circumcision and the prohibition of eating the thigh sinew, they could have been included together with the other commandments). Now for what reason did He commence with “In the beginning?” Because of [the verse] “The strength of His works He related to His people, to give them the inheritance of the nations” (Ps. 111:6). For if the nations of the world should say to Israel, “You are robbers, for you conquered by force the lands of the seven nations [of Canaan],” they will reply, "The entire earth belongs to the Holy One, blessed be He; He created it (this we learn from the story of the Creation) and gave it to whomever He deemed proper When He wished, He gave it to them, and when He wished, He took it away from them and gave it to us. From a Jewish standpoint the whole Torah up to this point is not of much importance (there goes my Kaboom Creation book). For the history of the world and the ownership of Eretz Yisrael the first part of the Torah is important.
Rashi writes on this section as follows and it is important to determine the new months for the Chaggim as the holidays are an important part of Judaism. This month: Heb. ×”ַ×—ֹדֶשׁ ×”ַ×–ֶ×”, lit., this renewal. He [God] showed him [Moses] the moon in its renewal and said to him, “When the moon renews itself, you will have a new month” (Mechilta). Nevertheless, [despite this rendering,] a biblical verse does not lose its simple meaning (Shab. 63a). Concerning the month of Nissan, He said to him, “This shall be the first of the order of the number of the months, so Iyar shall be called the second [month], and Sivan the third [month].” This: Moses found difficulty [determining] the [precise moment of the] renewal of the moon, in what size it should appear before it is fit for sanctification. So He showed him with His finger the moon in the sky and said to him, “You must see a moon like this and sanctify [the month].” Now how did He show it to him? Did He not speak to him only by day, as it says: “Now it came to pass on the day that the Lord spoke” (Exod. 6:28); “on the day He commanded” (Lev. 7:38); “from the day that the Lord commanded and on” (Num. 15:23) ? Rather, just before sunset, this chapter was said to him, and He showed him [the moon] when it became dark. — [from Mechilta]

3 Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying: In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to their fathers' houses, a lamb for a household; 4 and if the household be too little for a lamb, then shall he and his neighbor next unto his house take one according to the number of the souls; according to every man's eating ye shall make your count for the lamb.

(The tribes and families lived together so the neighbor would most likely be a cousin of first, second or third level). The lamb when stripped of wool, skin and bones supplied a certain amount of meat and the household would have to finish all the meat before morning.

5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year; ye shall take it from the sheep, or from the goats; 6 and ye shall keep it unto the fourteenth day of the same month; and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill RITUALLLY SLAUGHTER it at dusk.

In the afternoon prior to sundown.

7 And they shall take of the blood, and put it on the two side-posts and on the lintel, upon the houses wherein they shall eat it.

This is only for Pesach Mitzrayim but not for all generations.

8 And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; with bitter herbs they shall eat it.

The original four questions had the child ask ‘On all other nights we eat, fried, roasted and broiled on this night only broiled’. We the destruction of the Mikdash, we purposely do not eat roasted meat on Pesach or even roasted chicken or turkey.

9 Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roast with fire; its head with its legs and with the inwards thereof.

The meat is eaten with the inner organs roasted.

10 And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; but that which remains of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire.

Nothing shall remain and one should not break a bone of the Korban.

11 And thus shall ye eat it: with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste--it is the LORD'S Passover.

You shall it with your walking shoes and prepared to leave at a moment’s notice. Similar today is a soldier with his combat boots on, gun, vest and helmet by his side.

12 For I will go through the land of Egypt in that night, and will smite all the first-born in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the LORD.

I and not the Arch Angels, Sepharim, Orphanim or Holy Chayos. But I, the L-RD, who created man shall execute the Bechorim.

13 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are; and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and there shall no plague be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.

I will make a division between Yisrael and Mitzrayim and other nations, holy and profane, light and darkness, molecules in the 3D Universe and molecules suspended in other Sefiros. This is the same way I make distinction between Shabbos Kodesh, against Yom Tov Kodesh, Chol HaMoed, Rosh Chodesh and the rest of the weekdays.

14 And this day shall be unto you for a memorial, and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD; throughout your generations ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance forever.

This ordinance is not only for Pesach Mitzrayim in the year 2448 but for all Pesachim to the end of time. So we have done for the past 3332 years and the chain will not be broken. Even those who were in concentration camps tried to make a semblance of a Matzah under the threat of death.

Due to the family emergency, I am stopping here so as to give a quality commentary or the requirements of Pesach and the redemption of the first born throughout the generations.





Editorial: Sometimes things have to be put into the correct proportion. Sometimes when a political leader dies, sports figure, famous actor, etc. passes away the press and public are very upset. When Dr. Sabin, Salk, etc. who saved the lives of millions passes there is not such grieving. Speaking of sports figures there is a living person S. O’Neil who founded a charity foundation but since he is removed long ago from the headlines, he is given second burner.



The real people who move worlds are the top Rabbis and Roshei Yeshivas Gadolei HaDor. Rav Shach, Steinerman, etc. A few hundred thousand feel it deeply and some less but they are the real movers of heaven and earth. Note: According to Jewish legends there are 36 Tzaddikim that keep the world from being destroyed. When one goes another must take the place of his predecessor for the world to continue. My suggestion to you is strive to be one.





Thirty Thousand Israeli Jews in Amsterdam by Rabbi Y. Tilles


I once spent three days’ vacation in Amsterdam with my wife who wanted to see the art museums there. We also visited some friends, I spoke at an Israeli Synagogue and we returned.

All the Israelis I met there told me the same thing: "There are thirty thousand Israelis here in Amsterdam."

I don't know if this is true but they all said it with the same monotone, empty look in their eyes and half smirk on their lips as though to say, "It's disgusting, but I'm here to stay with the other 29,999!"

It was not a happy place and I was glad to leave. The flight back was in the daytime so I decided to use the opportunity to put 'tefillin' on the Jews who happened to be flying with me. (tefillin is a commandment that according to the Lubavitcher Rebbe every male Jew wants to do. But not many do it because they are not asked.

I took out my tefillin and stood up, a bit apprehensive about figuring out who was Jewish, only to discover that my worries were for naught.

I discovered that people from Holland do not move. I don't know if it was because of the plane flight or if they are always like that, but except for occasionally rattling their newspapers or saying a few words to the person next to them, they just sat in semi-suspended animation. Even their faces were sort of frozen.

The Jews on the other hand, especially the Israelis, could not sit still for a moment. They were constantly talking, making endless facial and hand gestures, getting up or just squirming around. So I just approached anyone that moved.

At first several refused, then one agreed, then a few more, then one said that he had already put on and so on. I proceeded down the aisle until I came to three young fellows, obviously Israelis, sitting next to each other. They looked like they had gotten a lot out of Amsterdam; their brows, nostrils and lobes were well pierced with rings and studs, small tattoos decorated their arms, and all had hair dyed unnatural colors.

"Nu? What do you say Yehudim (Jews)?" I said as I approached them "Want to do something really wild? Here, put on tefillin! It takes one minute on the clock and doesn't cost money! What do you say?"

From experience I know that you can never know what is going to happen. Several times people hugged and kissed me and once I actually had to protect myself from violence, so I was ready for anything.

The one sitting nearest the aisle contorted his face as though I was offering him a dead cat and shrugged his shoulders as high as possible which is Israeli for "drop dead".
I got the message and, not disheartened, turned my attention to his neighbor who wasn't looking at me, "What about you, my friend?" I asked.

Immediately he closed his eyes, tilted his head to a side and let out a snore, feigning deep sleep.

Only one was left. Sitting near the window reading a magazine enveloped in the drone of the plane he was unaware of what had just happened, I raised my voice in his direction, "Would you like to put on tefillin?"

He looked up at me suddenly and said "What!? What did you say?"

The first fellow, the one that refused, was following the whole thing with relish awaiting my total defeat, the one in the middle was still "asleep", but I could see he was peeking. I repeated the question as I held up the tefillin. "Want to put on tefillin?"

"Tefillin?" He said incredulously, "You want ME to put on tefillin?! He stood, bent over a bit because of the overhead bin, rolled up his sleeve and exclaimed with a smile, "Of course I'll put on tefillin!"

The first fellow was shocked! His best friend! Was one of...them! The "sleeper" in the middle even opened one eye to see if he had heard correctly. Meanwhile my customer joyously let me help him put on the tefillin, then sat down and began reading in a loud voice the "Shma Yisrael" from the card I gave him.

But I didn't notice that we were being watched. A well-dressed non-Jew, perhaps in his fifties sitting in the row before us had turned around and was watching the entire thing.
As soon as I noticed him I said hello and asked him if he had any idea what we were doing. He was a distinguished looking fellow traveling with what I assumed to be his wife and a friend, who just kept reading their papers and didn't even look up, and he shook his head "no".

He waited and watched intently as the Israeli finished and I removed his tefillin, and then I began to explain.

"These are called 'tefillin' in Hebrew, or 'phylacteries' [in Greek -yt],", I told him, holding up the headtefillin. "They are made of leather and are a commandment of G-d to the Jews. G-d wants every male Jew to put them on his arm and his head, like that man did, once a day every weekday." Then I explained to him that because most Jews these days are not observant, the Lubavitcher Rebbe told his followers to go out and remind and help them, and I'm one of his followers.

I saw that he was obviously impressed. He looked at the Israeli then back at me and said with astonishment, "You mean that this young man is not religious, and he put on those boxes just because you asked him? If I didn't see it with my own eyes I would not believe it!"

His excitement was contagious. I asked him his name, and he told me it was Peter. I continued. "Do you know what is inside each of these two leather boxes? Parchments containing the four paragraphs from the Bible that mention this commandment. And the most important of them says 'Shma Yisrael, Listen Jews, G-d is ONE."

He was listening intently above the noise of the plane as I resumed. "It means that G-d alone creates everything constantly! Do you know what that means, Peter?" His eyes were wide with amazement his traveling partners even looked up to see what was going on, but I wasn't finished.

"It means G-d, who can do anything, creates YOU every second brand-new! And He does it for free! So if G-d creates you for free, then do something for Him for free!" And I told him briefly about the Seven Noahide commandments.

We shook hands and I figured that that was the end of it, but it wasn't.

Suddenly he unfastened his safety belt, stood up, straightened his jacket and tie, pointed at me and yelled at the top of his lungs. "This Rabbi is correct!" Then he majestically pointed up and announced: "And I want to apologize. To publicly apologize to Him for what we have done to His people! We have taken a man and made him god, and we have denied THE HOLY COMMANDMENTS!!"

The last three words he really belted out so that several rows around us were staring. Then he very warmly and officially shook my hand again, sat back down and returned to the book he was reading.
