Parsha Va'era, holocoast stories, news

Miriam Esther bas Golda Chaya had surgery postponed indefinitely thanks for prayers.

Editorial: Over the years I have had a policy of Toras Emmes. So if the Torah is true so too I must try my best to print and speak the truth. I have maybe been fooled by a post or two on Facebook an example was Willy Nelson passed on and it was not true. Immediately, I retracted the shared post.

Last year the papers blared that the 5 years of drought that we had were from Global Warming. This year the excess rain is from global warming. Well make up your mind you want to have your cake, eat it too and prove your point by hook or by crook. The truth is in geological terms the earth about 50,000 years ago if you believe in more than 5780 years, was 11degree C warmer. Then there were a few ice ages. One thing for sure is that the ice in Alaska between the time of the visit by Captain Cook and the next ship had receded. Now that was before the industrial revolution and the so-called man-made global warming. As a former Astronomer, I tend to believe the theory of sunspot activity that causes global warming or cooling at any one time.

A Miracle for Ootman, the Arab semitrailer driver: There are righteous among the nations and sometimes for them or their children a miracle will occur. Monday morning the driver was supposed to load a container on to his company’s truck and take it to a certain destination. Usually, the driver remains in the cab. Today something moved him to leave the cab. The crane driver came with the container hit another container and two containers came crashing down crushing the cab. When interviewed on TV Ootman said, “Baruch HASHEM”.

Parsha Va’era

We left off last week that Pharaoh is working the Bnei Yisrael harder since Moshe came. Now the Bnei Yisrael have started grumbling at Moshe. This is true for all people with their leaders. People don’t see the big picture from HASHEM but the picture here and now and it is worse for them!

6:2 And God spoke unto Moses, and said unto him: 'I am the LORD; 3 and I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, as God Almighty, but by My name YHWH I made Me not known to them.

Come and see the G-D fearing and loving Avos. For they just needed the NAME ALMIGHTY and the fathers were moved and the generation of Moshe needed the Tetragrammaton to move them.

4 And I have also established My covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land of their sojournings, wherein they sojourned.

The simple love of the shepherds of Yisrael was enough to get the land of Canaan.

5 And moreover I have heard the groaning of the children of Israel, whom the Egyptians keep in bondage; and I have remembered My covenant. 6 Wherefore say unto the children of Israel: I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from their bondage, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm, and with great judgments;

The children, however, had to be molded into a nation and needed great miracles. Avraham was willing to jump into a furnace, Yitzchak the Akeda and Yacov to face Lavan and Esav.

7 and I will take you to Me for a people, and I will be to you a God; and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God, who brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. 8 And I will bring you in unto the land, concerning which I lifted up My hand to give it to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; and I will give it you for a heritage: I am the LORD.' 9 And Moses spoke so unto the children of Israel; but they hearkened not unto Moses for impatience of spirit, and for cruel bondage.

Moshe has the privilege of talking straight to the L-RD but the disappointment of the Bnei Yisrael ignoring him. Pharaoh will be even worse and yet he will go ahead.

10 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 11 'Go in, speak unto Pharaoh king of Egypt, that he let the children of Israel go out of his land.' 12 And Moses spoke before the LORD, saying: 'Behold, the children of Israel have not hearkened unto me; how then shall Pharaoh hear me, who am of uncircumcised lips?'

Moshe is a stutterer, shy and now broken by failure and disappointment. He is very down.

… 28 And it came to pass on the day when the LORD spoke unto Moses in the land of Egypt, 29 that the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 'I am the LORD; speak thou unto Pharaoh king of Egypt all that I speak unto thee.' 30 And Moses said before the LORD: 'Behold, I am of uncircumcised lips, and how shall Pharaoh hearken unto me?'

Moshe knows how hard it is to be a leader of a people that have two opinions on everything.

7:1 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'See, I have set thee in God's stead to Pharaoh; and Aaron thy brother shall be thy prophet. 2 Thou shalt speak all that I command thee; and Aaron thy brother shall speak unto Pharaoh, that he let the children of Israel go out of his land.

Moshe will stutter in Hebrew and Aaron will interpret it into Hebrew as the prophecy this gives Moshe distance and Pharaoh will see him even as a higher prophet.

3 And I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and multiply My signs and My wonders in the land of Egypt. 4 But Pharaoh will not hearken unto you, and I will lay My hand upon Egypt, and bring forth My hosts, My people the children of Israel, out of the land of Egypt, by great judgments.

You will be rebuffed by Pharaoh and the nation will see signs and wonders.

5 And the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I stretch forth My hand upon Egypt, and bring out the children of Israel from among them.'

Rabbi Beryl Wein Shlilta on our Parsha and the rich language. It is one of the extraordinary features of Torah study that it is applicable to so many different times and situations. The Rabbis of the Talmud implied this in their statement that the words of Torah sometimes seem to be poor and without meaning in one place and time while they are rich and of enormous value in another.
The use of different verbs to indicate the advent of the promised deliverance from Egyptian bondage indicates a process of redemption – a series of events and understandings and the development of a relationship between the Jewish people and the God of Israel that will fulfill the promise of redemption made to Abraham.
I have always felt in reviewing the events of the past century in Jewish life that we were in the midst of a process engineered by Heaven and accomplished by humans to restore us to our homeland and to our independence and greatness. Anything that is a process takes time and very rarely has immediate general impact. People view events and circumstances as they occur, one by one, and with of the passage of time and constantly changing circumstances, rarely are able to discern the general process that is unfolding before their very eyes. https://torah.org/torah-portion/forever-relevant/?print-posts=print from Torah.org

6 And Moses and Aaron did so; as the LORD commanded them, so did they. 7 And Moses was fourscore years old, and Aaron fourscore and three years old, when they spoke unto Pharaoh. 8 And the LORD spoke unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying: 9 'When Pharaoh shall speak unto you, saying: Show a wonder for you; then thou shalt say unto Aaron: Take thy rod, and cast it down before Pharaoh, that it become a serpent.' 10 And Moses and Aaron went in unto Pharaoh, and they did so, as the LORD had commanded; and Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh and before his servants, and it became a serpent. 11 Then Pharaoh also called for the wise men and the sorcerers; and they also, the magicians of Egypt, did in like manner with their secret arts. 12 For they cast down every man his rod, and they became serpents; but Aaron's rod swallowed up their rods.

The snake charmers of Pharaoh brought out two snakes and did their trick that the snakes became a rod but Aaron’s rod swallowed the snakes and then returned to be a rod. Did you think that Pharaoh would give in to a standard “magic trick”?

… 15 Get thee unto Pharaoh in the morning; lo, he goes out unto the water; and thou shalt stand by the river's brink to meet him; and the rod which was turned to a serpent shalt thou take in thy hand.

The Pshat is that he bathed every morning. The Drash is that since he was supposed to be a god he did his movements in the water each morning.

\16 And thou shalt say unto him: The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, hath sent me unto thee, saying: Let My people go, that they may serve Me in the wilderness; and, behold, hitherto thou hast not hearkened; 17 thus says the LORD: In this thou shalt know that I am the LORD--behold, I will smite with the rod that is in my hand upon the waters which are in the river, and they shall be turned to blood. 18 And the fish that are in the river shall die, and the river shall become foul; and the Egyptians shall loathe to drink water from the river.' 19 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Say unto Aaron: Take thy rod, and stretch out thy hand over the waters of Egypt, over their rivers, over their streams, and over their pools, and over all their ponds of water, that they may become blood; and there shall be blood throughout all the land of Egypt, both in vessels of wood and in vessels of stone.'

Aaron had to smite the water for it saved Moshe as an infant and G-D has compassion on the ‘feelings’ of the inanimate. (Remember the 11 Dimensions/Sefiros from my condensed mention of ‘string-theory’ in physics I have no idea of feelings and testimonies of walls of people’s houses after they lived 120 years and are judged for good or bad.)

… 22 And the magicians of Egypt did in like manner with their secret arts; and Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had spoken.

If you or your teacher has not demonstrated phenolphthalein and hydrochloric acid that looks like water and the ‘water’ and other clear ‘water’ comes together and it turns red. What was this ‘red blood’ was it bacteria, red clay in the water or certain algae? It does not matter what matters is that it appeared at the same time Moshe and Aaron met Pharaoh and lasted 7 days in all jars and pitchers of water gathered earlier.

… 26 And the LORD spoke unto Moses: 'Go in unto Pharaoh, and say unto him: Thus says the LORD: Let My people go, that they may serve Me. 27 And if thou refuse to let them go, behold, I will smite all thy borders with frogs. 28 And the river shall swarm with frogs, which shall go up and come into thy house, and into thy bed-chamber, and upon thy bed, and into the house of thy servants, and upon thy people, and into thine ovens, and into thy kneading-troughs.

You did detestable things to Am Yisrael now these creatures will be in your Pajamas jumping on bed and you. You will be disgusted and repulsed and the deafening croaking will not let you sleep.

29 And the frogs shall come up both upon thee, and upon thy people, and upon all thy servants.' 8:1 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Say unto Aaron: Stretch forth thy hand with thy rod over the rivers, over the canals, and over the pools, and cause frogs to come up upon the land of Egypt.' 4 Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron, and said: 'Entreat the LORD, that He take away the frogs from me, and from my people; and I will let the people go, that they may sacrifice unto the LORD.'

Pharaoh is crying ‘uncle’ ready to throw in the towel but as soon as the frogs leave we will see that Pharaoh returns to himself.

5 And Moses said unto Pharaoh: 'Have thou this glory over me; against what time shall I entreat for thee, and for thy servants, and for thy people, that the frogs be destroyed from thee and thy houses, and remain in the river only?' … 10 And they gathered them together in heaps; and the land stank. 11 But when Pharaoh saw that there was respite, he hardened his heart, and hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had spoken. 12 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Say unto Aaron: Stretch out thy rod, and smite the dust of the earth, that it may become gnats (LICE) throughout all the land of Egypt.'

Gnat!!! No lice upon everybody and the animals.

13 And they did so; and Aaron stretched out his hand with his rod, and smote the dust of the earth, and there were gnats upon man, and upon beast; all the dust of the earth became gnats throughout all the land of Egypt. 14 And the magicians did so with their secret arts to bring forth gnats, but they could not; and there were gnats upon man, and upon beast. 15 Then the magicians said unto Pharaoh: 'This is the finger of God'; and Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had spoken.

The Magicians used spiritual creatures called ‘Shaydim’ in Hebrew. These creatures can move objects such as frogs but lice is too small for them. Are these creatures/beings behind UFO’s in modern day terminology? Since the creatures or demons could not answer the Magicians they had to admit that the lice were ‘The hand of G-D’. The 3rd, 6th and 9th plagues came unannounced.

16 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Rise up early in the morning, and stand before Pharaoh; lo, he cometh forth to the water; and say unto him: Thus says the LORD: Let My people go, that they may serve Me. 17 Else, if thou wilt not let My people go, behold, I will send swarms of flies (NOXIOUS WILD BEASTS) upon thee, and upon thy servants, and upon thy people, and into thy houses; and the houses of the Egyptians shall be full of swarms of flies, and also the ground whereon they are. 18 And I will set apart in that day the land of Goshen, in which My people dwell, that no swarms of flies shall be there; to the end that thou may know that I am the LORD in the midst of the earth.

Egypt is located in Africa and hungry lions, cheetahs, baboons, leopards, man-eating snakes etc. shall come down the Nile in search of food and attack cattle and perhaps humans but not in Goshen.

19 And I will put a division between My people and thy people--by tomorrow shall this sign be.' … 21 And Pharaoh called for Moses and for Aaron, and said: 'Go ye, sacrifice to your God in the land.' 22 And Moses said: 'It is not meet so to do; for we shall sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians to the LORD our God; lo, if we sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians before their eyes, will they not stone us? 23 We will go three days' journey into the wilderness, and sacrifice to the LORD our God, as He shall command us.' 24 And Pharaoh said: 'I will let you go, that ye may sacrifice to the LORD your God in the wilderness; only ye shall not go very far away; entreat for me.' 25 And Moses said: 'Behold, I go out from thee, and I will entreat the LORD that the swarms of beasts may depart from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people, tomorrow; only let not Pharaoh deal deceitfully any more in not letting the people go to sacrifice to the LORD.' … 28 And Pharaoh hardened his heart this time also, and he did not let the people go
9:1 Then the LORD said unto Moses: 'Go in unto Pharaoh, and tell him: Thus says the LORD, the God of the Hebrews: Let My people go, that they may serve Me. 2 For if thou refuse to let them go, and wilt hold them still, 3 behold, the hand of the LORD is upon thy cattle which are in the field, upon the horses, upon the asses, upon the camels, upon the herds, and upon the flocks; there shall be a very grievous murrain. …' 6 And the LORD did that thing on the morrow, and all the cattle of Egypt died; but of the cattle of the children of Israel died not one. 7 And Pharaoh sent, and, behold, there was not so much as one of the cattle of the Israelites dead. But the heart of Pharaoh was stubborn, and he did not let the people go.

Pharaoh did not have a psychologist ask him “How’s it working for your?” if he had maybe before HASHEM hardened this heart, he could have repented and let the people go to worship.

8 And the LORD said unto Moses and unto Aaron: 'Take to you handfuls of soot of the furnace, and let Moses throw it heavenward in the sight of Pharaoh. 9 And it shall become small dust over all the land of Egypt, and shall be a boil breaking forth with blains upon man and upon beast, throughout all the land of Egypt.' 10 And they took soot of the furnace, and stood before Pharaoh; and Moses threw it up heavenward; and it became a boil breaking forth with blains upon man and upon beast. 11 And the magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils; for the boils were upon the magicians, and upon all the Egyptians.

The days for repentance were over and now HASHEM was hardening Pharaoh’s heart.

13 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Rise up early in the morning, and stand before Pharaoh, and say unto him: Thus says the LORD, the God of the Hebrews: Let My people go, that they may serve Me. 14 For I will this time send all My plagues upon thy person, and upon thy servants, and upon thy people; that thou may know that there is none like Me in all the earth. 15 Surely now I had put forth My hand, and smitten thee and thy people with pestilence, and thou had been cut off from the earth. 16 But in very deed for this cause have I made thee to stand, to show thee My power, and that My name may be declared throughout all the earth. 17 As yet exalt thou thyself against My people, that thou wilt not let them go? 18 Behold, tomorrow about this time I will cause it to rain a very grievous hail, such as hath not been in Egypt since the day it was founded even until now.

Tomorrow there will be a thick hail that will also have fire in the middle (or electrical charges).

19 Now therefore send, hasten in thy cattle and all that thou hast in the field; for every man and beast that shall be found in the field, and shall not be brought home, the hail shall come down upon them, and they shall die.' 20 He that feared the word of the LORD among the servants of Pharaoh made his servants and his cattle flee into the houses; 21 and he that regarded not the word of the LORD left his servants and his cattle in the field.

This time G-D allows believing Egyptians to be spared and those who worship Pharaoh to lose out.

… 24 So there was hail, and fire flashing up amidst the hail, very grievous, such as had not been in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation. 25 And the hail smote throughout all the land of Egypt all that was in the field, both man and beast; and the hail smote every herb of the field, and broke every tree of the field. 26 Only in the land of Goshen, where the children of Israel were, was there no hail. … 31 And the flax and the barley were smitten; for the barley was in the ear, and the flax was in bloom. 32 But the wheat and the spelt were not smitten; for they ripen late.

So some of the Egyptians were spared from plague for they grew wheat and spelt. But they will not be spared for too long if Pharaoh does not repent.

-- 33 And Moses went out of the city from Pharaoh, and spread forth his hands unto the LORD; and the thunders and hail ceased, and the rain was not poured upon the earth.

One is forbidden to pray where there are idols or feces and so Moshe had to leave the city because of this and then the plague could clear up.

34 And when Pharaoh saw that the rain and the hail and the thunders were ceased, he sinned yet more, and hardened his heart, he and his servants. 35 And the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, and he did not let the children of Israel go; as the LORD had spoken by Moses.

Baruch’s Story by Rabbi Rachamim Pauli

1945 the Liberation of the Camps. I can assume from the story that the camp Baruch was in was Dachau near Munich.

I made Aliyah in 1970 but finding work as an academic was not easy. I had a black Yarmulke and scrawny beard. The head of placement for academics and the head of absorbing immigrants were run by Mapam the anti-religious left. “We’re willing to pay your way back to the States, we made a mistake when we took you on Aliyah.” I was lucky, I had some earnings and some financial backing. With that I went out to work like a high school graduate at an ordinary job and once was employed, he was entitled to housing and could leave the absorbsion house.

My backing came from Avraham Goldstein of Yad L’Achim, the half-brother of Rav Yerachmiel Kram Shlita. Between them, the Roshei Yeshivas of Grodno and Pittsburgher Rebbe (father of Mordechai Leifer, the present Rebbe), I managed to integrate nicely into the Orthodox Yeshiva – Type Community.

After my losing the job that was temporary, I tried out many others and decided to learn for a while Computers at Bar Ilan University. The computers were user unfriendly they required precise non-error programming on punch cards and waiting on line for your work to be accepted. After a while, I found it very frustrating that I could not type directly, like today, into the computer. I dropped that and looked into being a member of a religious collective farm – a partnership Moshav.

I worked with a number of folks. One was milking after washing the utters of cows. The man in charge of water, planting and also cutting the wheat was Baruch.  Baruch was strong from the work that he had done in the Concentration Camp. I was 25 at the time.

Baruch did not go into the horrid details of the camps that many survivors want to forget or in reverse talk about. He talked about how the liberation was. After starvation upon the German abandonment of the camp, the Americans came and liberated the camp.

At first they gave people normal meals. Many ate too much and their stomach burst from over-eating like story of those who almost ate the quail raw in the wilderness. The doctors then started to give chocolate bars to suck on until the people could get more into their system. Gradually people were able to eat normal food again.

So this week when about 50 heads of states gathered on international holocaust day, I remembered the liberation of Baruch. The people with the numbers on their arms are getting fewer and fewer and my first great-grandchild might actually be able to meet a survivor and be old enough to remember. One survivor opened up a Holocaust Museum in Texas with a 3D Hologram of himself to tell the story for generations to come. We have a video from Yad Vashem of my late father-in-law quite late in his life and a bit confused telling his story of forced labor in Romania. He took a nail to impale his hand before Yom Kippur to get out of work for a day or two.
