The Answer to Last week’s question is the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania engraved on the bell is “Proclaim Liberty throughout the land”. https://www.nps.gov/inde/learn/historyculture/stories-libertybell.htm

I received from my first Chavrutha, Avraham Arieh, a wonderful story. The story was of a 93year old man in Italy. He had Corona, recovered and was given a bill of thousands of Euros for use of a ventilator. The man began to cry. The doctor or hospital clerk asked him, “Grandpapa why are you crying? You can’t pay the bill?” The man replied that he had the money to pay the bill and was not crying for that. He said, “For 93years, I have been using G-D’s air and taking it for granted. I can only imagine how much I owe to him for all the good in my life.”

Parsha Bamidbar

If you recall the whole of Sefer Vayikra took place in or just before Rosh Chodesh Nissan 2449. This week’s Parsha starts a month later and next week’s Parsha we return to the 12 days of the dedication of the Mishkan in Nissan.

1:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they were come out of the land of Egypt, saying:

Rosh Chodesh Iyar 2449.

2 'Take ye the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, every male, by their polls;

This is why the Sefer is called in English “The Book of Numbers” for the census in the beginning and the census at the end.

3 from twenty years old and upward, all that are able to go forth to war in Israel: ye shall number them by their hosts, even thou and Aaron. 4 And with you there shall be a man of every tribe, every one head of his fathers' house.

Each head of the tribe was a born leader.

5 And these are the names of the men that shall stand with you: of Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur. 6 Of Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai. 7 Of Judah, Nahshon the son of Amminadab. 8 Of Issachar, Nethanel the son of Zuar. 9 Of Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helon. 10 Of the children of Joseph: of Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud; of Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur. 11 Of Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni. 12 Of Dan, Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai. 13 Of Asher, Pagiel the son of Ochran. 14 Of Gad, Eliasaph the son of Deuel. 15 Of Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan.' 16 These were the elect of the congregation, the princes of the tribes of their fathers; they were the heads of the thousands of Israel.

Were they already elected by their tribes to lead or only now singled out by HASHEM. For the Medrash is quite clear that Nachshon ben Amminadav supposedly showed leadership by jumping into the sea of reeds first up to his nostrils and then the sea parted. (A G-D helps those who help themselves example.)

17 And Moses and Aaron took these men that are pointed out by name. 18 And they assembled all the congregation together on the first day of the second month, and they declared their pedigrees after their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, by their polls. 19 As the LORD commanded Moses, so did he number them in the wilderness of Sinai. 20 And the children of Reuben, Israel's first-born, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, by their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 44 These are those that were numbered, which Moses and Aaron numbered, and the princes of Israel, being twelve men; they were each one for his fathers' house. 45 And all those that were numbered of the children of Israel by their fathers' houses, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war in Israel; 46 even all those that were numbered were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty. 47 But the Levites after the tribe of their fathers were not numbered among them.

The tribe of Levi were teachers, priestly class and they did not increase with large number of births like the other tribes.

48 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 49 'Howbeit the tribe of Levi thou shalt not number, neither shalt thou take the sum of them among the children of Israel; 50 but appoint thou the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, and over all the furniture thereof, and over all that belongeth to it; they shall bear the tabernacle, and all the furniture thereof; and they shall minister unto it, and shall encamp round about the tabernacle. 51 And when the tabernacle setteth forward, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up; and the common man that draweth nigh shall be put to death. 52 And the children of Israel shall pitch their tents, every man with his own camp, and every man with his own standard, according to their hosts. 53 But the Levites shall pitch round about the tabernacle of the testimony, that there be no wrath upon the congregation of the children of Israel; and the Levites shall keep the charge of the tabernacle of the testimony.' 54 Thus did the children of Israel; according to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so did they.
...2:32 These are they that were numbered of the children of Israel by their fathers' houses; all that were numbered of the camps according to their hosts were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty. 33 But the Levites were not numbered among the children of Israel; as the LORD commanded Moses. 34 Thus did the children of Israel: according to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so they pitched by their standards, and so they set forward, each one according to its families, and according to its fathers' houses.
3:1 Now these are the generations of Aaron and Moses in the day that the LORD spoke with Moses in mount Sinai. 2 And these are the names of the sons of Aaron: Nadab the first-born, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. 3 These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the priests that were anointed, whom he consecrated to minister in the priest's office. 4 And Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD, when they offered strange fire before the LORD, in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children; and Eleazar and Ithamar ministered in the priest's office in the presence of Aaron their father.

The Torah is stating this as a past fact as it occurred three weeks earlier. A proof that there is no early or late in Torah comes from the fact that next week, we return to the dedication of the princes that occurred between the first and twelfth of Nissan.

5 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 6 'Bring the tribe of Levi near, and set them before Aaron the priest, that they may minister unto him. 7 And they shall keep his charge, and the charge of the whole congregation before the tent of meeting, to do the service of the tabernacle. 8 And they shall keep all the furniture of the tent of meeting, and the charge of the children of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle. 9 And thou shalt give the Levites unto Aaron and to his sons; they are wholly given unto him from the children of Israel. 10 And thou shalt appoint Aaron and his sons, that they may keep their priesthood; and the common man that draws nigh shall be put to death.'

Either by man or struck down by the L-RD as happened as the Teva was returned in the time of Melech David to Yerushalayim.

11 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 12 'And I, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel instead of every first-born that opens the womb among the children of Israel; and the Levites shall be Mine; 13 for all the first-born are Mine: on the day that I smote all the first-born in the land of Egypt I hallowed unto Me all the first-born in Israel, both man and beast, Mine they shall be: I am the LORD.' 14 And the LORD spoke unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, saying: 15 'Number the children of Levi by their fathers' houses, by their families; every male from a month old and upward shalt thou number them.' …28 according to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, eight thousand and six hundred, keepers of the charge of the sanctuary. 29 The families of the sons of Kohath were to pitch on the side of the tabernacle southward; 30 the prince of the fathers' house of the families of the Kohathites being Elizaphan the son of Uzziel, 31 and their charge the ark, and the table, and the candlestick, and the altars, and the vessels of the sanctuary wherewith the priests minister, and the screen, and all that pertaineth to the service thereof; 32 Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest being prince of the princes of the Levites, and having the oversight of them that keep the charge of the sanctuary. 33 Of Merari was the family of the Mahlites, and the family of the Mushites; these are the families of Merari. 34 And those that were numbered of them, according to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, were six thousand and two hundred; 35 the prince of the fathers' house of the families of Merari being Zuriel the son of Abihail; they were to pitch on the side of the tabernacle northward; 36 the appointed charge of the sons of Merari being the boards of the tabernacle, and the bars thereof, and the pillars thereof, and the sockets thereof, and all the instruments thereof, and all that pertaineth to the service thereof; 37 and the pillars of the court round about, and their sockets, and their pins, and their cords. 38 And those that were to pitch before the tabernacle eastward, before the tent of meeting toward the sunrising, were Moses, and Aaron and his sons, keeping the charge of the sanctuary, even the charge for the children of Israel; and the common man that drew nigh was to be put to death. 39 All that were numbered of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron numbered at the commandment of the LORD, by their families, all the males from a month old and upward, were twenty and two thousand.

See below as normally I would have had a lot to comment here.
40 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Number all the first-born males of the children of Israel from a month old and upward, and take the number of their names. 41 And thou shalt take the Levites for Me, even the LORD, instead of all the first-born among the children of Israel; and the cattle of the Levites instead of all the firstlings among the cattle of the children of Israel.' 42 And Moses numbered, as the LORD commanded him, all the first-born among the children of Israel. 43 And all the first-born males according to the number of names, from a month old and upward, of those that were numbered of them, were twenty and two thousand two hundred and threescore and thirteen. 44 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 45 'Take the Levites instead of all the first-born among the children of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of their cattle; and the Levites shall be Mine, even the LORD'S. 46 And as for the redemption of the two hundred and three score and thirteen of the first-born of the children of Israel, that are over and above the number of the Levites, 47 thou shalt take five shekels apiece by the poll; after the shekel of the sanctuary shalt thou take them--the shekel is twenty gerahs. 48 And thou shalt give the money wherewith they that remain over of them are redeemed unto Aaron and to his sons.' 49 And Moses took the redemption-money from them that were over and above them that were redeemed by the Levites; 50 from the first-born of the children of Israel took he the money: a thousand three hundred and threescore and five shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary. 51 And Moses gave the redemption-money unto Aaron and to his sons, according to the word of the LORD, as the LORD commanded Moses.

At this point I stop and will continue with Chapter 4 next week. I am not usually an excuse maker and joining in the eulogy of the Chief Chazan of our Synagogue from Cancer would have only delayed slightly the output of the Blogspot. However, waging war with the Chutzpa of a teen with perhaps over 160 IQ last measured when he was very young and his laziness have proven very taxing on myself. I have a Torah imperative as a Rabbi to impart knowledge to my readers. I have been through one major surgery and three bouts with pneumonia and did not stop the Blogspot but a battle with the Yetzer HaRa of a teen and this weaker generation has over-taxed me. It could be also the 113F or 45C temperatures we had in Israel up until yesterday that recorded only 103C or 39F that also knocked me out. Ble Neder next week for Shavuos and Parsha Naso. DO NOT FORGET NEXT WEEK TO MAKE AN ERUV TAVSHILLIN!

From all my teachers I have learned. Sometimes from my students or Converts I learn more. From Yehoshua Jacobs:

Football Players scores a touchdown in Israel.

The journey of NFL legend Yosef (Calvin) Murray and his wife Emunah to Judaism and Israel is an inspiration for those seeking a spiritual life.
By Tsivya Fox-Dobuler

All-star Rose Bowl NFL running back Yosef (Calvin) Murray and his wife Emunah (Jeri) inspire all who meet them. The couple, who converted to Judaism, now live most of the year in Israel.

“Israel is a wonderful place filled with beautiful people who love each other,” Yosef told United with Israel (UWI) in a phone conversation on Sunday. “I am proud to be a citizen and am so grateful that Hashem (God) blessed me to be part of the Jewish people and this country.”

The couple met nearly three decades ago when Calvin was tutoring Jeri’s children. They married in 1992. Together, they have followed a fascinating spiritual path.

They were both born Christian and joined an evangelical church 12 years after they wed. They eventually found their way to Orthodox Judaism. “We were youth pastors at a Messianic church but got terminated because we were becoming ‘too Jewish.'” Yosef said. “We continued studying Judaism at home, which eventually led us to the local Chabad.”

The NFL player was not a complete stranger to Judaism, having been raised in Woodbine, New Jersey, a predominantly Orthodox Jewish town. “At a young age I started asking questions to my pastor about the differences in religious observance between Jews and non-Jews from what I was seeing from my friends,” he said. “I was given poor explanations that ultimately led me to seek the truth.”

The couple converted in 2013 in Detroit. They remarried according to Jewish law and are grateful to their communities in both the US and Israel for embracing and nurturing them throughout their transformation.

“After our conversion, Rabbi Areyah Kaltmann, who officiated, said, ‘Mazel tov, you just scored a touchdown win for the Jewish people.'” Yosef shared.

When converting to Judaism, a person chooses a Hebrew name with which he or she can connect. “Just like the biblical Joseph (Yosef), I’ve always been a dreamer. That’s why I chose that name,” Yosef explained. “When I was considering converting to Orthodox Judaism, my late mother came to me in a dream and said, ‘Finish where you’re going.’ I took that as a good sign.”

Last year, he went to the grave of Joseph in Nablus (Shechem). “For me, that was coming full circle.” According to rabbinical literature, when a Jewish person arrives in Israel, his or her soul is affected. “I experienced that. I experience miracles wherever I go… In Israel, there are always opportunities to do mitzvot [good deeds]. You don’t see that as much outside of the Land.”

Due to an injury, Yosef left professional football. However, he credits the sport with preparing him for an Orthodox Jewish lifestyle. “To master football, one must practice the same moves again and again and again,” he told UWI. “It takes a lot of discipline and can be torture but then you succeed. Learning Torah, doing mitzvot and praying three times a day require constant repetition like my past training.”
Since leaving the NFL, he has counseled and inspired foster children. He also regularly speaks to both adults and children about Torah, Judaism, Israel, his relationship with God and the life experiences that brought him to where he is today.
“I use athletic terminology when I speak with people so they can relate to me and what is going on in the world today in a practical way,” he said. “In professional sports, one strives to perfect themselves which is also the goal of Judaism.” When UWI asked how Yosef’s NFL friends reacted to his becoming Jewish, he laughed.

“Well, some call me ‘Sammy’ as in Sammy Davis Jr.,” he said. “I often need to leave alumni events early if they are on Friday in order to get home in time for Shabbat. They also don’t understand why I can no longer eat the food at events, because it isn’t kosher. But I feel it is a privilege to be a Jew and live in Israel.”

Though Emunah’s connection to Israel was immediate, Yosef’s journey took longer.

“While others slept between locations, I was taken over with emotions, the beauty of the Land and its holiness,” she said, recalling her first tour to the country in 2006. “I didn’t want to miss one thing that Israel had to offer,” she said. “I immediately felt connected, but, as a non-Jew I was an outsider.”

In 2012, during their challenging process of converting, which included moving from a community they loved in order to live near their synagogue, Yosef joined his wife on her fourth visit to the Holy Land. With time, Yosef, too, was hooked. “I am Israeli now,” he said. “I am part of history here. This is my destiny.”

Getting his Israeli citizenship “completely rewired his brain,” bringing him to “huge emotional, spiritual and psychological changes.” he told UWI. “We discussed living in Israel after we retire but I didn’t want to wait so many years to get here,” Emunah said.

The couple did a split Aliyah. Emunah moved to Israel in 2016 and Yosef would visit regularly. On a visit for the holiday of Sukkot, the couple met at the bus station for the first time since she had moved. It was clear that she was thriving.

“When we got married, I promised God I’d do everything I could to make her the happiest woman in the world,” Yosef told UWI. “When I saw Emunah she was glowing. It was clear to me that Israel made her happy. She had so much support from the community, I knew there was nothing to worry about.”

They live nine months a year in Ma’aleh Adumin with a view of the Judean mountains. During the summer, they visit their six children and three grandchildren, all non-Jews, in the US.

Yosef’s mission now is to be a light to those around him. “I love people and I love the Jewish people. I want to be a light to all… I am proud to say I am a convert because my past brought me to who I am today.

“If someone told us 20 years ago that we’d be Orthodox Jews living in Israel, I wouldn’t have believed them. We pray that our words and deeds give joy to Hashem and that we continue to merit to live in Israel. We are very conscience that it is a privilege to walk in the Land of Israel. We think of all the things Hashem did for us to bring us to Judaism and Israel. We are living in the land of the Bible, and it’s been an amazing journey to get here. We feel that in Israel we are living out our destiny. Our hearts overflow with gratitude.”

Four Layers of Moon and Handkerchief by Rabbi Y. Tilles

One Motzei Shabbos (Saturday night), the eve of the Fast of Esther, the night before Purim 5713 (1953). the Lubavitcher Rebbe had just finished praying Maariv in 770. He went out to the street with his chasidim to recite the Kiddush Levana ("Sanctification of the New Moon") prayer. However, the chances of being able to accomplish this appeared to be very slim, because the sky was covered with thick clouds, and the moon must be entirely visible for this prayer to be said.
The Rebbe turned towards the assembled crowd and related a story from the time of the Tzemach Tzedek (the Rebbe's ancestor and namesake).
"Once, in [the village of] Lubavitch [in White Russia], the last possible night for Kiddush Levana arrived, (for after that it would be a full moon,) yet the moon was not visible. The worried chasidim wrote a note of request about this and submitted it to the Tzemach Tzedek.
"The Tzemach Tzedek came out to the courtyard with a handkerchief in his hand, and began to tell a story to the chasidim that gathered around:
"'The chasidim of the great Tzaddik Rabbi Meir of Premishlan once submitted a letter to their Rebbe when the moon was not visible for Kiddush Levana. Reb Meir'el (as he was affectionately known) came out holding a handkerchief and said:

"'When the Jewish people were in the desert after the Exodus from Egypt, surrounded by the Clouds of Glory, how could they see the moon through the clouds in order to perform Kiddush Levana?
"'He explained: Moshe Rabbaynu would go out, followed by the entire nation, wave his handkerchief back and forth, and the clouds would part….
"'Reb Meir'el demonstrated with his handkerchief what Moshe Rabbaynu would do, and to everyone's great astonishment, the clouds immediately parted and the whole moon became visible!
"The Tzemach Tzedek related this story to his Chassidim, and also demonstrated with his handkerchief how Reb Meir'el had done it. The miracle happened again, the clouds parted and the moon became visible!"
When the Rebbe concluded the story, he turned to the chasidim around him and said: "If there are Jews here that can do similar things, perhaps we will be able to do Kiddush Levana tonight."
One of the chasidim, Rabbi Y. G., couldn't restrain himself and exclaimed: "The Rebbe!"
The Rebbe responded to him with a smile, "My job is only to tell the story."
The Rebbe then said, "I'll be back soon", and he left to make Havdalah for his mother, Rebbetzin Chana, who one street away.
It turned out that unlike with Moshe Rabbaynu, Reb Meir'el of Premishlan and the Tzemach Tzedek, this time there was no need to even wave the handkerchief. By the time the Rebbe returned a few minutes later, the skies were already clear, and the Rebbe and the chasidim recited Kiddush Levana together.

Connection: Seasonal - Iyar 29 (this Friday), is the 170th yahrzeit of the Primishlaner Rebbe.
Biographical notes (in order of appearance):
The Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson [11 Nissan 5662 - 3 Tammuz 5754 (April 1902 - June 1994 C.E.)], became the seventh Rebbe of the Chabad dynasty after his father-in-law's passing on 10 Shvat 5710 (1950 C.E.). He is widely acknowledged as the greatest Jewish leader of the second half of the 20th century C.E. Although a dominant scholar in both the revealed and hidden aspects of Torah and fluent in many languages and scientific subjects, the Rebbe is best known for his extraordinary love and concern for every Jew on the planet. His emissaries around the globe dedicated to strengthening Judaism number in the thousands. Hundreds of volumes of his teachings have been printed, as well as dozens of English renditions.

Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneersohn [of blessed memory: 29 Elul 5549 - 13 Nissan 5626 (Sept. 1789 - April 1866)], the third Rebbe of Chabad, was known as the Tzemach Tzedek, after his books of Jewish Law responsa and Talmudic commentary called by that name. He was renowned not only as the Rebbe of tens of thousands, but also as a leading scholar in his generation in both the revealed and secret aspects of Torah.

Rabbi Meir of Premishlan [of blessed memory: ? - 29 Iyar 5610 (? - May 1850 C.E.)], lived in abject but uncomplaining poverty, yet exerted himself tirelessly for the needy and the suffering. His Ruach HaKodesh (prophetic spirit) and his ready wit have become legendary. He wrote no works, but some of his teachings were collected and published by his chasidim after his death.

Celebrating Chag Shavuos

My personal way of celebrating the Chag is to learn at night Mishnayos Bikurim (first fruits), perhaps discussing Megillah Ruth, learning Mishnayos, Halachos and eating cheese products in the morning with a special lactose intolerance digestion pill for myself. Goat and Sheep Cheeses are better for lactose intolerance people but tradition of blinches, cheese cake, etc. are worth taking the pill for once a year. I do not make it my purpose to stay up all night unless I am capable of learning. For if my head is not clear enough to learn something and I am forcing myself from dozing off, I sleep for a person stays awake either to learn or Menashe, my forester son, likes the Sephardic Tradition of reading special things from the Zohar on Shavuos. Whatever you do it should be for the sake of heaven and not like many young people stay up for the purpose of chewing the fat all night long. Story of the giving of the Torah in the Talmud Shabbos 88.

Sometimes it is nice to put in a good word. I saw the father of the Director-General of the Health Ministry. I told him that the apple does not fall far from the three and because he is such a person, his son became successful. (The father is an accountant and for a Sephardi in my generation in Israel to become an accountant or engineer, etc. it was something extra-ordinary.)
