Parshiyos Achrei Mos - Kedoshim 3 Stories with a Holocast one with a happy ending

Parsha Achrei Mos - Kedoshim

The tragedy of losing two sons was a great shock not only for Aaron but for the whole nation that knew him and them. The Torah goes into laws of Negaim and Zavim and now we return to the tragedy. The shock of the death of Nadav and Avihu was then as strong as the passing of dozens of Roshei Yeshiva and Chachamim in Eretz Yisrael and the world that we experienced with Covid19 Virus.

16:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they drew near before the LORD, and died; 2 and the LORD said unto Moses: 'Speak unto Aaron thy brother, that he come not at all times into the holy place within the veil, before the ark-cover which is upon the ark; that he dies not; for I appear in the cloud upon the ark-cover.

He shall not enter the Kodesh Kedoshim except on Yom Kippur and only the Cohain HaGadol.

3 Herewith shall Aaron come into the holy place: with a young bullock for a sin-offering, and a ram for a burnt-offering.

These are the Kaporos (atonement offering) for Yom Kippur. One for Aaron and his family and the other for the whole nation.

4 He shall put on the holy linen tunic, and he shall have the linen breeches upon his flesh, and shall be girded with the linen girdle, and with the linen mitre shall he be attired; they are the holy garments; and he shall bathe his flesh in water, and put them on.

He is in special garments for this holy occasion.

5 And he shall take of the congregation of the children of Israel two he-goats for a sin-offering, and one ram for a burnt-offering. 6 And Aaron shall present the bullock of the sin-offering, which is for himself, and make atonement for himself, and for his house. 7 And he shall take the two goats, and set them before the LORD at the door of the tent of meeting. 8 And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats: one lot for the LORD, and the other lot for Azazel. 9 And Aaron shall present the goat upon which the lot fell for the LORD, and offer him for a sin-offering. 10 But the goat, on which the lot fell for Azazel, shall be set alive before the LORD, to make atonement over him, to send him away for Azazel into the wilderness.

Here and in Parsha Emor we shall see the Avoda of the Cohain Gadol on Yom Kippur and brought out in fine detain in Meseches Yoma.

11 And Aaron shall present the bullock of the sin-offering, which is for himself, and shall make atonement for himself, and for his house, and shall ritually slaughter the bullock of the sin-offering which is for himself.

He had to do this, but there could have been helpers seeing that slaughtering the bull is quite a dangerous procedure. Today we can do it by locking it into a feed trough or some other device. In the generation before mine, I heard of two slaughterers who left widows because the bulls got to them.

12 And he shall take a censer full of coals of fire from off the altar before the LORD, and his hands full of sweet incense beaten small, and bring it within the veil.

Incense stayed the plague as we shall see later on in Sefer Bamidbar Shelach Lecha.

13 And he shall put the incense upon the fire before the LORD, that the cloud of the incense may cover the ark-cover that is upon the testimony, that he dies not.

First, it keeps the Malach MaMaves away (Angel of Death). Second, it is a pleasant smell before HASHEM and lastly, the smoke clouds the Cohain from viewing directly HASHEM.

14 And he shall take of the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it with his finger upon the ark-cover on the east; and before the ark-cover shall he sprinkle of the blood with his finger seven times.

In the Mussaf Prayer of Yom Kippur we say one above and seven below. One, one and one as they used to count in the Mikdash.

15 Then shall he slaughter the goat of the sin-offering, that is for the people, and bring his blood within the veil, and do with his blood as he did with the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it upon the ark-cover, and before the ark-cover. 16 And he shall make atonement for the holy place, because of the uncleannesses of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions, even all their sins; and so shall he do for the tent of meeting, that dwells with them in the midst of their uncleannesses.

Again he walks in with a fresh garment after the Mikvah.

17 And there shall be no man in the tent of meeting when he goes in to make atonement in the holy place, until he come out, and have made atonement for himself, and for his household, and for all the assembly of Israel.

Only the Cohain does this and he goes in solo.

18 And he shall go out unto the altar that is before the LORD, and make atonement for it; and shall take of the blood of the bullock, and of the blood of the goat, and put it upon the horns of the altar round about. 19 And he shall sprinkle of the blood upon it with his finger seven times, and cleanse it, and hallow it from the uncleannesses of the children of Israel. 20 And when he hath made an end of atoning for the holy place, and the tent of meeting, and the altar, he shall present the live goat. 21 And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions, even all their sins; and he shall put them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of an appointed man into the wilderness.

All the sins of Am Yisrael rested upon this goat. Bids were made for the right to give the Mitzvah of taking out the goat and the man was chosen. He would die pure but within that year. Still there were many elderly men that wanted to go into the next world clean.

22 And the goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities unto a land which is cut off; and he shall let go the goat in the wilderness. …29 And it shall be a statute forever unto you: in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, ye shall afflict your souls, and shall do no manner of work, the home-born, or the stranger that sojourns among you. 30 For on this day shall atonement be made for you, to cleanse you; from all your sins shall ye be clean before the LORD.

Yom Kippur will be a day of Kaporos for Am Yisrael forever.

31 It is a Sabbath of solemn rest unto you, and ye shall afflict your souls; it is a statute forever.

It is likened in holiness almost to Shabbos and sometimes does fall on Shabbos.

32 And the priest, who shall be anointed and who shall be consecrated to be priest in his father's stead, shall make the atonement, and shall put on the linen garments, even the holy garments.

This is the assistant Cohain as Rabbi Yishmael was during the corruption of the second Mikdash where bribes bought the spot and they died on Yom Kippur and Rabbi Yishmael was in place to finish the Avoda.

33 And he shall make atonement for the most holy place, and he shall make atonement for the tent of meeting and for the altar; and he shall make atonement for the priests and for all the people of the assembly. 34 And this shall be an everlasting statute unto you, to make atonement for the children of Israel because of all their sins once in the year.' And he did as the LORD commanded Moses.

…18:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them: I am the LORD your God. 3 After the doings of the land of Egypt, wherein ye dwelt, shall ye not do; and after the doings of the land of Canaan, whither I bring you, shall ye not do; neither shall ye walk in their statutes. …5 Ye shall therefore keep My statutes, and Mine ordinances, which if a man do, he shall live by them: I am the LORD.

The commandments, statutes and ordinances are to live by them.

6 None of you shall approach to any that is near of kin to him, to uncover their nakedness. I am the LORD.

The Torah at this point goes into incestuous relationships and the prohibit of Molech.

…22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind; it is abomination.

Despite the tolerance and propaganda shown by the wicked politicians who have no love for Torah or fear of G-D the Torah views this as an abomination and the land of Eretz Yisrael has within the innate condition in its molecules and atmosphere of holiness to vomit the people out for this. Either this or some Tzaddikim will die to atone for this most horrible sin.

23 And thou shalt not lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith; neither shall any woman stand before a beast, to lie down thereto; it is perversion.

As perverse and disgusting it is lie with an animal, the language treats male homosexuality worse. The death penalty might be the same, but the former is so horrible and unnatural for the world was created specifically with male and female souls. Going against the order of creation is as if one spit towards the Kodesh Kedoshim in front of the Cheruvim.

24 Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things; for in all these the nations are defiled, which I cast out from before you. 25 And the land was defiled, therefore I did visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land vomited out her inhabitants.

Those who understand Kabbalah understand this for the world has four forms of molecular life “inanimate, plant, animal and talking”.

26 Ye therefore shall keep My statutes and Mine ordinances, and shall not do any of these abominations; neither the home-born, nor the stranger that sojourns among you.

Observe and the land will guard you.

27 for all these abominations have the men of the land done, that were before you, and the land is defiled-- 28 that the land vomit not you out also, when ye defile it, as it vomited out the nation that was before you.

The inanimate land has a condition to living within. Do these perversions and abominations and you will be vomited out.

29 For whosoever shall do any of these abominations, even the souls that do them shall be cut off from among their people. 30 Therefore shall ye keep My charge, that ye do not any of these abominable customs, which were done before you, and that ye defile not yourselves therein: I am the LORD your God.

You shall do so for I am the L-RD.

19:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them: Ye shall be holy; for I the LORD your God am holy.

Imitation is the highest form of flattery and imitating G-D in holiness is our Pasuk.

3 Ye shall fear every man his mother, and his father, and ye shall keep My Sabbaths: I am the LORD your God.

It is the nature of a small child and even a youth to fear his father. The 15year old rebellion did not exist in the time of the Bible as youth were either trained well in honoring the elders given apprentice jobs either in the family or outside and usually married off with children of their own. The mother is placed before the father as she is the one who coos to the little children and not the tough rugged father.
4 Turn ye not unto the idols, nor make to yourselves molten gods: I am the LORD your God.

Idols are the opposite of holiness they usually involve some depravity. Some involve fertility cults, human sacrifices and others defecation. These disgusting practices are of course the contrary of holiness.
The next section is on peace offerings and the gleamings of the harvest for the poor and the Ger.
11Ye shall not steal; neither shall ye deal falsely, nor lie one to another. 12 And ye shall not swear by My name falsely, so that thou profane the name of thy God: I am the LORD. 13 Thou shalt not oppress thy neighbor, nor rob him; the wages of a hired servant shall not abide with thee all night until the morning.

Stealing implies stealth or a cat burglar type. Robbing is out and out at gun point or taking the wages away from your hiring.

14 Thou shalt not curse the deaf, nor put a stumbling-block before the blind, but thou shalt fear thy God: I am the LORD.

These poor individuals may have been Tzaddikim in a past life. They asked HASHEM to reincarnate as a blind person so as not to be punished for looking at nudity or deaf so as not to listen to Lashon Hara. And with this in mind would you do such a thing?

15 Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment; thou shalt not respect the person of the poor, nor favor the person of the mighty; but in righteousness shalt thou judge thy neighbor. 16 Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people; neither shalt thou stand idly by the blood of thy neighbor: I am the LORD.

Right now we are in a wicked and an unjust world. I think of a June 1968 car accident in the Boston area where a rich powerful politician let his drunk mistress die for he himself was drunk, covered it up and ran for President.

17 Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thy heart; thou shalt surely rebuke thy neighbor, and not bear sin because of him. 18 Thou shalt not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself: I am the LORD.

This is your Jewish neighbor for you do not know if Hussein or Adolph will take your rebuke and kill you. You assume all Jews have a special Neshama and will listen to Torah Mussar. You shall not bear a grudge against a Jew who has wronged you but that does not mean you are required to greet him and converse with him just not to harbor hatred. Taking vengeance is a horrible thing and it ends up with damages and perhaps murder.

19 Ye shall keep My statutes. Thou shalt not let thy cattle gender with a diverse kind; thou shalt not sow thy field with two kinds of seed; neither shall there come upon thee a garment of two kinds of stuff mingled together.

Torah Tidbits by Phil C. for 40 years used to use the picture of the Giraffe and another animal on “What happened on Mulberry Street” by Dr. Seuss as an example of forbidden mixtures in their Parsha Pictures. This is of course an ox and a donkey or dressing a mixture of wool and linen.

…26 Ye shall not eat with the blood; neither shall ye practice divination nor soothsaying.

This is already stated that the soul of the animal is in the blood and tricksters and others with divination either are charlatans or they rely upon the Sidra Acher (dark side) to divine or soothsay.

27 Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard. 28 Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor imprint any marks upon you: I am the LORD.

The first refer to shaving and the second is from idol worship that the Shiites do unto this day with their frenzies.

29 Profane not thy daughter, to make her a harlot, lest the land fall into harlotry, and the land become full of lewdness.

Harlotry, permissiveness, lewdness and immodesty are not part of Judaism. There are Jewish women today who consider it an art form to do a belly dance. Well the Torah has news for them.

30 Ye shall keep My Sabbaths, and reverence My sanctuary: I am the LORD.

This constant reminder is necessary. The Yetzer to violate Shabbos is great and there are 39 types of Melachos.

31 Turn ye not unto the ghosts, nor unto familiar spirits; seek them not out, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God.

No séances and other activities that may or may not work they are forbidden!

32 Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head, and honor the face of the old man, and thou shalt fear thy God: I am the LORD.

If G-D has given a man or a women of lifespan of 70years, you should rise up before them and offer them a seat on a bus or train out of respect that G-D has lengthened their days and it may be because of this what goes around comes around that you might live 70years or more.

33 And if a stranger sojourn with thee in your land, ye shall not do him wrong. 34 The stranger that sojourn with you shall be unto you as the home-born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.

The first one is the Ger Tzeddek who is essentially a Jew but new to your neighborhood and perhaps unestablished. The latter is a Ger Toshav and should not be taken advantage of because he/she is a minority.

35 Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment, in meteyard, in weight, or in measure. 36 Just balances, just weights, a just ephah, and a just hin, shall ye have: I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt.

Just standards of weights and measures and at time calculating against the known standard that they are correct. You shall observe this because:

37 And ye shall observe all My statutes, and all Mine ordinances, and do them: I am the LORD.

… 20:13 And if a man lie with mankind, as with womankind, both of them have committed abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

Why does this prohibition and others come to repeat themselves? For the acts are so disgusting or abominable in our case that HASHEM Yisborach repeats the prohibition. Perhaps HE did so for Roman times and times like today when the most lewd, perverse and abdominal things become the modern mode.

14 And if a man take with his wife also her mother, it is wickedness: they shall be burnt with fire, both he and they; that there be no wickedness among you.

People used to sleep in a one room hovel even in Talmudic Times. The Cohanim had pants underneath for holiness but ordinary men and women had one garment which they removed at night. Such was the home atmosphere and these things were readily available so one is told to overcome his Yetzer HaRa. Perhaps being burnt in fire will calm somebody’s fire of passion down. Among the nations of the world this might have been their practice and abomination.

15 And if a man lie with a beast, he shall surely be put to death; and ye shall slay the beast. 16 And if a woman approach unto any beast, and lie down thereto, thou shalt kill the woman, and the beast: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

This is taking a dumb animal and satisfying ones Yetzer. Such a disgusting perversion of nature deserves the death penalty.

…18 And if a man shall lie with a woman having her sickness, and shall uncover her nakedness--he hath made naked her fountain, and she hath uncovered the fountain of her blood--both of them shall be cut off from among their people.

This includes his wife during her menses. Both get Kares and should die young. Of course some Mitzvos are so great they get their portion in this life.

… 22 Ye shall therefore keep all My statutes, and all Mine ordinances, and do them, that the land, whither I bring you to dwell therein, vomit you not out.

Plain and simple do the Mitzvos stay in the land.

23 And ye shall not walk in the customs of the nation, which I am casting out before you; for they did all these things, and therefore I abhorred them. ... 27 A man also or a woman that divineth by a ghost or a familiar spirit, shall surely be put to death; they shall stone them with stones; their blood shall be upon them.

It’s becoming harder and harder for me to speak about the Holocaust. The older I get, it seems, the more I feel the pain. Unlike the rest of the world that not only would prefer to forget, but also, in the most ugly and offensive manner, it intentionally dismisses Israel, the Jewish State, as being Nazi-like in its treatment of Palestinian Arabs. Israel has provided the Palestinians with education, water, electricity, jobs—a standard of life far superior to any in the Arab world. How do they show their appreciation? They launch tens of thousands of missiles at Israel; they dig tunnels to commit acts of terror; they blow up busses and randomly stab innocent young and old on the streets. And the world says it’s the Jew’s fault because it doesn’t give the Palestinians more! The pain over the Holocaust intensifies in me every time I read how successful the enemies of the Jews are in using Nazi propaganda tactics against us.

But I digress. Regardless of the pain, Yom HaShoah Ugvurah, Holocaust and Heroism Day comes around every year and must be commemorated. This year it was this past Thursday. What do I for this day? Among other things, I now look for inspirational stories filled with hope that mitigates the pain—and there are many such Holocaust stories. Let me share 3 with you today—each a sermon in itself.

Elmer Bendiner was a navigator in a B-17 bomber during WW II. He tells the story in his book, The Fall of Fortresses, of a World War II bombing run over Kassel, Germany, and the unexpected result of a direct hit on their gas tanks:

Our B-17, the Tondelayo, was barraged by flak from Nazi anti-aircraft guns. That was not unusual, but on this particular occasion our gas tanks were hit. Later, as I reflected on the miracle of a 20 millimeter shell piercing the fuel tank without touching off an explosion, our pilot, Bohn Fawkes, told me it was not quite that simple. On the morning following the raid, Bohn had gone down to ask our crew chief for that shell as a souvenir of unbelievable luck.

The crew chief told Bohn that not just one shell, but 11, had been found in the gas tanks. 11 unexploded shells where only one was sufficient to blast us out of the sky. It was as if the sea had been parted for us. A miracle, I thought.

Even after so much time, so awesome an event leaves me shaken, especially after I heard the rest of the story from Bohn. The shells had been sent to the armorers to be defused. When the armorers opened each of those shells, they found no explosive charge. They were as clean as a whistle and just as harmless, but not all empty. One contained a carefully rolled piece of paper. On it was a scrawl in Czech, a note that read: “This is all we can do for you now...Using Jewish slave labor is never a good idea.”

Can you imagine the courage of those Jewish slaves as they found a way to defy their Nazi taskmasters?

My next story is not about Jews, but about Christians. No, not about righteous Gentiles who helped saved Jews, but about what one group of German Christians did 20 years after the Holocaust. A group of German Christians arrived in Israel seeking to live their lives alongside the Jews with the intention of helping to usher in the redemption. The 800 members of Kibbutz Beit-El have become an integral part of the city of Zichron Yaakov, the lives and fate of its members intermingled with the nation of Israel.

For many years Israelis suspected the group of German Christians of being missionaries with a hidden agenda to convert Jews. Time and familiarity brought down the walls of distrust. Today, Kibbutz Beit-El is the largest private employer in the city and its members are fully accepted by their Jewish neighbors.

With almost prophetic vision, in 1977 the members of Beit El taught themselves engineering and began to build air-filtration systems to protect against poison gas attacks. Their initiative was partly due to a belief that the War of Gog and Magog in the Bible that will precede the coming of the Messiah will involve chemical warfare.

During the Gulf War in 1991, Saddam Hussein threatened to use chemical weapons and nerve gas in the missiles he fired at Israel. Suddenly, these filtration systems were very much in demand and a new industry was born. This nuclear, biological and chemical system is the only one made in Israel to protect against a very real threat.

Stefan Link—one of the original members—looks back on the years with a quiet joy in their spiritual accomplishments in Israel. “We are 52 years in Zichron. If I look back to ‘63, we came because we saw that it is a great gift for us to be with the Jews. We came here without any plans or expectations. We knew that whoever blesses this nation gets blessed. And we feel that we have been blessed.”

It’s amazing, if you think about it, that German Christians are building systems to protect Israel from genocidal chemical attacks—a far cry from the Zyklon-b chemical showers and ovens of Auschwitz that killed millions of Jews. The Tikkun (spiritual repair) aspect of this just astounding!

My last story is also about the aftermath of the Holocaust. It’s a story about Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, z”l, and it takes place during his many travels spreading his light and music. On one of his flights, Shlomo was pleasantly surprised to see a stewardess whose name tag read “Cathy”—not a very Jewish name—davening (praying) from a siddur (a Jewish prayer book) in the back of the plane. He waited until she finished and asked, “I see that you’re praying from a siddur, are you Jewish?”

Cathy replied, “My parents are not Jewish but ever since I can remember, I was attracted to Judaism. When I grew older I studied with an Orthodox Rabbi and converted. As you see, I now lead an observant life and keep all the commandments.”

One of the passengers signaled for her attention and so the stewardess had to excuse herself.  Later she approached Shlomo and told him of a dilemma she was having: “I see by the way you’re dressed that you’re probably a rabbi. Maybe you can help me. Recently I met a Jewish young man and he proposed. We very much want to get married but his parents are adamantly opposed because I’m a convert. They threatened to cut him off and sever all ties with him if he goes through with this. He’s heartbroken and I fear he’ll call off the wedding. Can you help me?”

“Give me their phone number and yours and I’ll see what I can do.”

Shlomo later called the boy’s parents and the conversation did not go over very well. In fact, the parents were furious at Shlomo for attempting to intervene. The more Shlomo tried to defend the merits of the girl the further enraged the father became. It got so bad at one point he yelled into the phone, “Know that were are Holocaust survivors and only over my dead body will I allow my son to marry a gentile!” Shlomo tried to explain that she’s not a Gentile; she’s an observant Jew—more observant than his is. The Torah commands us 36 times to love the convert. Why should she suffer because there were Nazis who killed Jews? But it was to no avail, and the last thing Shlomo heard was the father slamming the phone down.

Shlomo immediately called Cathy to confirm her worst fears—that his attempt at mitigation had met with utter failure. As he dialed, Reb Shlomo regretted being the bearer of such bad tidings and worried over shattering the dream of this poor girl’s last hopes. However, she wasn’t home and her father picked up the phone. Shlomo told him about what had just transpired. Much to Shlomo’s chagrin her father became just as upset at him as the boy’s father had been and gave Reb Shlomo another earful: “They don’t want our daughter, so we don’t want them!”

Eventually, Shlomo’s genuine concern for his daughter deeply touched the father and he told him: “I want to tell you something that my daughter doesn’t know—a secret that I’ve never revealed to anyone. My wife and I are not really Christian. We are both Jewish—Holocaust survivors. We did not want our daughter to go through what we went through, and so we pretend to be Christian. We don’t know what may happen in America someday. So let her think she’s Christian.”

“If so,” exclaimed Reb Shlomo excitedly, “your daughter is actually Jewish from birth and can marry the boy without any objection from his parents! This is wonderful news! Can you and your wife come to my hotel room tonight at 8? I’ll invite his parents as well and, hopefully, we can settle all this.”

A few minutes after 8:00pm when the groom’s parents arrived, the father looked at Cathy’s father who was already there. They stared curiously at each other for about 20 seconds and then in almost shock Cathy’s father cried out, “YANKELE?”

Startled the other groom’s father then shouted, “HERSHELE? You’re alive! I was sure you were dead.”

They fell into each other’s arms and cried. Everyone was stunned. A few moments later after they regained their composure they explained that before the war they were chavrusa (study partners in yeshiva). Each was certain that the other had perished. Then Yankele asked: “Do you remember how we used to dream about the future while were in the yeshiva?

“Yes,” replied Hershele, “we told each other that when we grew up and got married we would marry our children off to each other and become one family. We forgot our vow, but G-d did not forget!”

My friends, there are 7 billion people in the world. What’s the chance something like this happening by accident—that this Cathy, born to Holocaust survivors will meet Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach on a plane and he would agree to intervene with her fiancé’s family, and the father would be the long-lost chavrusa of Cathy’s father? Some may think that G-d had forgotten the Jews during the Holocaust, but G-d never forgets His people. We will never know why the Holocaust happened; but we do know that Am Yisrael Chai, the People of Israel live and, with G-d’s grace, will always live. Amen!
                                      Rabbi Mark Hillel Kunis

The third story I received on What’s App. From my ole Chavrutha, Lenny with a little different ending as stories change over the years but the main theme in the story is true and what HASHEM wills does come to pass. It was a marriage pact for the sake of heaven and for the sake of heaven it was completed despite a Holocaust and non-Jewish obstacles involved. Man proposes G-D disposes.
