This week’s Parsha falls around the Yahrzeit of Rabbi Glixman and is dedicate to the Aliyah of his Neshama.
Speaking of Rabbi Glixman who often had help from heaven; Sunday morning, I decided not to send Menashe to his Yeshiva. The Covid cases in the Charedi Sector started exploding and the first stage of the Vaccine will only take effect this coming Shabbos or later. It turns out that Menashe’s Chavrutha got Corona and on Shabbos he was positive already. So we sent Menashe into quarantine but on Tuesday the Health Ministry announced only one test needed for the testing capacity is strained. Things are messed up but good with this disease.
Parsha Shemos Part 1
Our Sefer and Parsha start with the knowledge that the generation of tribes have died out. The Bnei Yisrael are in Mitzrayim 130 years and slavery has begun.
1:1 Now these are the names of the sons of Israel, who came into Egypt with Jacob; every man came with his household: 2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah; 3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin; 4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. 5 And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls; and Joseph was in Egypt already. 6 And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.
The last of the brothers to pass away was Levi at the age of 133years.
7 And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.
Many had integrated into Egyptian Society and had moved up in the ranks of civil service as usual disproportional to their percentage of the population.
8 Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who knew not Joseph. 9 And he said unto his people: 'Behold, the people of the children of Israel are too many and too mighty for us; 10 come, let us deal wisely with them, lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there befalls us any war, they also join themselves unto our enemies, and fight against us, and get them up out of the land.'
The first time I heard this in my lifetime was in College from an Italian-American in the mid-1960’s. Nobody questioned him if he would take the side of Italy if the US made war with Italy but an American Jew and Israel was questionable. Why? What makes us different from others? Why should I as a fellow born in the USA be any less loyal than a person from Irish, Italian, Scottish, French or other background born in the USA? For what a country of foreigners that I never visited prior to 1970 run by eastern Europeans with a majority of people from North African or other Muslim run countries.
Yet we see in our Pasuk that in Egypt the argument going out on people a few generation citizens of Egypt who have never been outside the land could join with enemies of the land of their birth.
11 Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh store-cities, Pithom and Raamses. 12 But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. And they were adread because of the children of Israel.
Under normal circumstances, a Jew goes to work, comes home views what the children have learned, goes on to his Torah Learning and goes to sleep. Coming back from afflicting work he only wants to eat, perhaps wash up and goes to sleep. The wife wants to talk to her husband and one thing leads to another and more children are born as that and eating are the only pleasure that the man has.
13 And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigor. 14 And they made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field; in all their service, wherein they made them serve with rigor.
The people did not have time to learn Torah except the ‘priests’ that were from Levi. So these ignorant people sort physical pleasure in place of intellectual and religious ones.
15 And the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah;
Rashi says this is Miriam and Yocheved. Pharaoh is afraid of the Israeli Moshiach being born who will have trouble with water and endanger Pharaoh’s kingdom.
16 and he said: 'When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, ye shall look upon the birthstool: if it be a son, then ye shall kill him; but if it be a daughter, then she shall live.'
Sounds foolish this whole plan. He loses a year supply of male slaves. A man can have one than one wife so the older man will marry two or more women and produce more children. If he killed the females, the slaves would no longer live in Egypt or reproduce.
But that was not his goal.
17 But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men-children alive. 18 And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them: 'Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men-children alive?' 19 And the midwives said unto Pharaoh: 'Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwife come unto them.' 20 And God dealt well with the midwives; and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty. 21 And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that He made them houses.
So now the first maternity hospital was opened up.
22 And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying: 'Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.'
This have now gone from bad to worse and the boys are murdered per Pharaoh on the spot but still there are ways around this.
2:1 And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi. 2 And the woman conceived, and bore a son; and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months.
They estimated her due date via what they saw and she could no longer hide the child as the time was around the Egyptian estimated ‘due date’.
3 And when she could no longer hide him, she took for him an Ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch; and she put the child therein, and laid it in the flags by the river's brink.
And this Ark would float down the river and the waters behind the Ark turned to ‘blood’. This would prevent more murders.
4 And his sister stood afar off, to know what would be done to him. 5 And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe in the river; and her maidens walked along by the river-side; and she saw the ark among the flags, and sent her handmaid to fetch it. 6 And she opened it, and saw it, even the child; and behold a boy that wept. And she had compassion on him, and said: 'This is one of the Hebrews' children.'
Since she was the daughter of the god-king Pharaoh she had the Egyptian version of the name Basya. She knew Moshe was from the Hebrews but she could save him and adopt him as Pharaohs intermingled with their opposite sex offspring. Pharaoh would think Moshe was his and not the Jewish Moshiach as the River had just turned blood red and the decree could be removed.
7 Then said his sister to Pharaoh's daughter: 'Shall I go and call thee a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for thee?' 8 And Pharaoh's daughter said to her: 'Go.' And the maiden went and called the child's mother. 9 And Pharaoh's daughter said unto her: 'Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages.' And the woman took the child, and nursed it.
There are two questions here that should be answered. Why a Hebrew wet nurse when there were readily available Egyptian wet nurses. How did Yocheved manage to nurse the child with Pharaoh’s soldiers all around.
The first answer is that Basya tried to have an Egyptian wet nurse and Moshe refused to suckle. Then she listened to Miriam’s suggestion. The second answer makes us return to Parsha Miketz. If you recall, Pharaoh takes his ring off and a chain and passes them to Yosef. So too here Yocheved received a ring and some guarantee that she would not be harmed.
10 And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses, and said: 'Because I drew him out of the water.'
So the male who could and would lead Am Yisrael to freedom grew up in the house of Pharaoh and was trained in diplomacy, the art of combat, etc. that a leader needs to know.
11 And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown up, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens; and he saw an Egyptian smiting a Hebrew, one of his brethren. 12 And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he smote the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.
The Pshat is what you read. The Drash is that he checked if any future offspring could come out of the Egyptian that could do go deeds for Am Yisrael. When he saw none, he slew the Egyptian. Others say that he used the TETRAGRAMMATION to kill the Egyptian.
13 And he went out the second day, and, behold, two men of the Hebrews were striving together; and he said to him that did the wrong: 'Wherefore smite thou thy fellow?' 14 And he said: 'Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us? think thou to kill me, as thou didst kill the Egyptian?' And Moses feared, and said: 'Surely the thing is known.'
How did the two Hebrews (according to Medrash Datan V’ Amiram) know that it was Moshe who killed the Egyptian. One thing was obvious, that Prince Moshe who had been busy conquering Africa and other adventures had returned. Pharaoh sent him to oversee the construction. The Talmudic Logic was as follows. The Bnei Yisrael are afraid to start up with the Egyptians. Moshe is relatively new here. Moshe must have started up with the overseer and killed him. This is called Kal V’ Chomer or from the easy to the difficult way of learning. [See the 13 principles of learning of Rabbi Yishmael in the Siddur before ‘Mizmor Shir for the Dedication of the House of David’ aka First Temple in The Ashkenazi Siddur or “Hodu” in the Sephardic, Sephard, Yemenite and Chabad Siddurim in the morning prayers.]
15 Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to slay Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian; and he sat down by a well.
The rules were well defined it was permissible to kill a slave for not following a command but an overseer was a representative of Pharaoh and killing him meant death.
16 Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters; and they came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father's flock.
Moshe fled Pharaoh. How long was it and what he did before meeting the daughters of Yisro was unknown? There are Midrashim that fill in some details.
17 And the shepherds came and drove them away; but Moses stood up and helped them, and watered their flock.
The Shepherds essentially wanted to steal the water from Yisro’s well and perhaps abuse the daughters. Now as I mentioned above, the Prince of Egypt was well trained in Martial Arts. He might have been close to eighty but had not lost his skills. I personally witnessed Rabbi Glixman not to far from his passing get into a boxing position. To put it mild former Heavy Weight Champion George Forman is 71years old now. I don’t know if any normal fellow would want to challenge him. A former Sumo Wrestler asked me with my weight vs. his to try to push him over. He is about 13 years my senior in his 80’s. I could not budge him an inch. He simply used my weight against me.
18 And when they came to Reuel their father, he said: 'How is it that ye are come so soon to-day?' 19 And they said: 'An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and moreover he drew water for us, and watered the flock.'
From here it might be that the shepherds were afraid of Yisro as he was a Priest and perhaps man of magic cures so that they only teased the girls for their own fun. “An Egyptian” as Moshe spoke with an Egyptian accent and perhaps his dress style was that of an Egyptian. A fellow named Brody said to me. “In Canada I was a Jew, but when I can to Israel I was known as a Canadian.” I also did a double take when I was touring Yellowstone National Park and saw of bunch of Mennonite Men as they looked almost like Chassidic Men. The woman with their head coverings were quite different from the more modern looking Chassidic Women.
20 And he said unto his daughters: 'And where is he? Why is it that ye have left the man? call him, that he may eat bread.'
Where did this hospitality come from? Yisro was Priest of Midian and who was the father of the Midian Tribe? Avraham of course so hospitality and HaKaras HaTov was part of their tradition.
21 And Moses was content to dwell with the man; and he gave Moses Zipporah his daughter.
Yisro seeing that a man was needed around the flock made Moshe an offer. Moshe would become Shepherd in Chief and his son-in-law by marrying Tzipporah.
22 And she bore a son, and he called his name Gershom; for he said: 'I have been a stranger in a strange land.'
The root of Ger is stranger. Non-Jews or even distanced Bnei Yisrael such as the Bnei Menashe undergo ‘conversion’ to remove any Sofek of non-Jewishness and Maumzerim from them. So these Gerim are in one way strangers as the customs of Ethiopians, Bnei Menashe are further away from the well-known Ashkenazi, Sephardic and Yemenite communities that had communications over the centuries.
23 And it came to pass in the course of those many days that the king of Egypt died; and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage. 24 And God heard their groaning, and God remembered His covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. 25 And God saw the children of Israel, and God took cognizance of them.
Had G-D forgotten them? Of course not. There was a Gezaira of 400 years. When should the Gezaira start? From the birth of Yitzchak or from the entrance into Mitzrayim? The difference was 190 years. (60years before the birth of Yacov and Yacov was 130 when he entered Mitzrayim.) Because the Bnei Yisrael cried out, the earlier date was chosen.
3:1 Now Moses was keeping the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian; and he led the flock to the farthest end of the wilderness, and came to the mountain of God, unto Horev. 2 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush; and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. 3 And Moses said: 'I will turn aside now, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.'
Why was the Sneh Bush apparently on fire but not consumed by the flames?
4 And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said: 'Moses, Moses.' And he said: 'Here am I.'
Sound came out of the Bush and called upon Moshe by name.
5 And He said: 'Draw not nigh hither; put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou stand is holy ground.' 6 Moreover He said: 'I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.' And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.
Mt. Sinai was known as the mountain of the L-RD.
7 And the LORD said: 'I have surely seen the affliction of My people that are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their pains; 8 and I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; unto the place of the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite.
And the L-RD began explaining his plan to Moshe on what should be done..
9 And now, behold, the cry of the children of Israel is come unto Me; moreover I have seen the oppression wherewith the Egyptians oppress them. 10 Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou may bring forth My people the children of Israel out of Egypt.'
How can this be as I am a person who stutters and will be laughed out by Pharaoh. He may not understand my older Egyptian. [My brother came to visit me after I was in Israel about 6 to 8 years after leaving the States. He said to me: “Give me five”. I did not understand what he wanted from me. That was not part of my vocabulary when I left the USA during the Black September Hijackings.] You can imagine the language change in 40years. Even in Hebrew, the younger generation started to use the term ‘Achi’ or my brother in the Israeli Army a nice concept but was not around when I did my army service about ten years before.
11 And Moses said unto God: 'Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt?' 12 And He said: 'Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be the token unto thee, that I have sent thee: when thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain.'
Moshe might have been bred by G-D in Pharaoh’s house for this mission but he had no confidence in himself.
13 And Moses said unto God: 'Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them: The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me: What is His name? what shall I say unto them?' 14 And God said unto Moses: 'I AM THAT I AM'; and He said: 'Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel: I AM hath sent me unto you.'
I WILL BE THAT WHAT I WILL BE. The L-RD is unlimited and boundless.
15 And God said moreover unto Moses: 'Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel: The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you; this is My name for ever, and this is My memorial unto all generations. 16 Go, and gather the elders of Israel together, and say unto them: The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, hath appeared unto me, saying: I have surely remembered you, and seen that which is done to you in Egypt.
Some of the elders had a tradition how they should know that the one claiming to be the Moshiach is the Moshiach. For there are number of people who run around from time to time claiming to be the Moshiach.
17 And I have said: I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt unto the land of the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite, unto a land flowing with milk and honey. 18 And they shall hearken to thy voice. And thou shalt come, thou and the elders of Israel, unto the king of Egypt, and ye shall say unto him: The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, hath met with us. And now let us go, we pray thee, three days' journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God.
The elders of the Bnei Yisrael will believe you.
19 And I know that the king of Egypt will not give you leave to go, except by a mighty hand.
Pharaoh will not believe you and make a lot of trouble for surely the economy of Mitzrayim is based on slave labor.
20 And I will put forth My hand, and smite Egypt with all My wonders which I will do in the midst thereof. And after that he will let you go.
Only after many miracles and wonders will you be released from Egypt.
21 And I will give this people favor in the sight of the Egyptians. And it shall come to pass, that, when ye go, ye shall not go empty;
The Bnei Yisrael shall receive compensation for their slavery.
22 but every woman shall ask of her neighbor, and of her that sojourns in her house, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment; and ye shall put them upon your sons, and upon your daughters; and ye shall spoil the Egyptians.'
You shall receive a nice compensation with the wealth of Mitzrayim.
To be continued.
Blind Faith by Rabbi Zevulun Charlop (thanks to JEM Chabad)
During the fast of Tisha B’Av in 1958 my mother — Chaya Sarah — became very ill. She was a very pious woman who deeply felt the pain of this day when we mourn the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem, and she would recite the lengthy prayers called Kinot with tears in her eyes. As she was praying, she experienced a terrible headache and suddenly lost her sight.
She was home alone in New York at the time because my father, Rabbi Yechiel Michel Charlop, was in California, and I was visiting my in-laws in Buffalo. But she had the presence of mind to grope for the phone and call a friend whose son was a neurosurgeon.
The son, Dr. Sheldon Katz, rushed right over, and so did I as soon as I was notified of what happened. Meanwhile various specialists were consulted; they were not sure what was happening to her — maybe it was a stroke or a ruptured aneurysm — but, whatever it was, she was likely hemorrhaging and her condition was grave. An operation to stem the blood leakage was required, but she might not survive it.
In the end, they managed to engage the services of Dr. Morris Bender, a world-renowned expert and chairman of the neurology department at Mount Sinai Hospital, who reached my parents’ house before midnight. His prognosis was less bleak than that of the other doctors and he was against immediate surgery, but he insisted that she be hospitalized so that various tests could be administered.
The tests were of no help however; the actual reason for my mother’s pain and blindness could not be found. And at this point, Dr. Bender said that he would like to do an angiogram of her brain. Angiograms — where radio-opaque fluid is injected into the blood stream so that an x-ray can be taken — were relatively new at the time and carried considerable risk. Ten percent of the people who underwent angiograms died.
I knew the risks very well. In fact, one of my teachers, Rabbi Yeruchim Gorelik, was given an angiogram which sent him into a coma that lasted a year-and-a-half. But Dr. Bender insisted.
While we were deciding what to do, my mother requested that Rabbi Baruch Putterman, a family friend and noted Lubavitcher chasid, ask the Rebbe whether or not they should go ahead with the angiogram. My mother had never met the Rebbe herself, but she had heard a great deal about him and she trusted that he would help us make this very important decision.
Rabbi Putterman reported back that the Rebbe had said: “Find a doctor who thinks you shouldn’t take the test.”
He didn’t tell us to get a better doctor, and he also didn’t overrule Dr. Bender directly and advise against the angiogram. He wanted us to find another doctor who would tell us not to do it. So we needed to get another opinion.
When we told this to Dr. Bender, he got very angry. “Are you crazy?” he shouted at us. “I have kept your mother alive.” (This was true; the other doctors thought there was little hope, but he had hospitalized her and supervised her care.) “So how can you now question my judgment? It’s important for her health that we understand what is going on inside her brain because this will help us know what to do. If we don’t understand what’s going on, we may not be able to save her.”
My father wanted to go along with Dr. Bender; he feared that it was foolhardy to listen to the Rebbe, who had been leading Chabad for less than a decade, while disregarding the opinion of the top neurologist in the country. But my mother stubbornly refused to listen. She was a very strong-willed woman, and despite Dr. Bender’s objections and my father’s reservations, she insisted we follow the Rebbe’s instructions.
When Dr. Bender saw that she was unmovable, he agreed to have another doctor examine her, but he specified that he would only respect the opinion of two — Dr. H. Houston Merritt, the physician of President Dwight Eisenhower, or Dr. Sam Bernard Wortis, professor of neurology at the NYU School of Medicine and director of neurological services at Bellevue Medical Center.
Dr. Merritt was then tending to President Eisenhower following his stroke, but Dr. Wortis agreed to come that afternoon. However, he warned us, “I can’t imagine going against Dr. Bender.”
After Dr. Wortis examined my mother and reviewed the medical records — which were extensive as, by then, my mother had been hospitalized for two weeks and had undergone many tests — he began pacing the hallway. What was he doing? “I’m thinking whether to go against Bender,” he replied. “I have to weigh if this angiogram would really uncover anything that would change her condition. Dr. Bender thinks that maybe we will find something that we don’t know about. But, after weighing the odds, I don’t think it’s worth taking the risk.”
Because of Dr. Wortis, Dr. Bender stopped insisting on the angiogram. About a week later, my mother regained her sight on her own. She picked up the prayer book which she kept by her side in the hospital and started reciting the prayers. And that was the happy ending to this dramatic story which might have ended quite differently if my mother had not insisted — despite the experts — that we follow the Rebbe’s advice.

Anarchists to the right of me Anarchists to the left of me. By R. Pauli
This summer when ANTIFA was burning places in Portland, 5th and 6th Ave NY Shops looted, Kenosha, Minneapolis and more filled with riots. Perhaps I did not shout from the roof tops my concern and it was only condemned in my Inyanay Diyoma. Unlike me MSNBC, CNN and other major media outlets played it down and did not condemn it at all.
What happened this week in Washington DC was following Newton’s Law of Physics. Every reaction has an equal and opposite reaction. It is possible that ANTIFA instead of attacking the Trump Demonstration provoked and participated in the chaos that followed in the attempted take-over of the Congress Building. Yes, of course it is “the people’s building” but not in the way of mob rule.
The President made some pleas a bit late in the game to listen to the law enforcement and go home. I believe that he never expected his protest and rally to become a riot. As for me I condemn in no uncertain way shape and form the previous riots by the left and now I have to condemn the riots by the right. If Democracy has been abused by one political party, it has to be corrected by due process before it becomes lost and a one party system. It is time for the majority of the people to wake up and exercise their right to vote or all will be lost.
I received the following forwarded by Molly. (Even CNN reported ANTIFA was there.)
Copied from a friend: Attention please:
I am in Washington at what was the “Stop the steal” rally - I need to tell you what really happened. I got there at 7:00am - This rally was ENTIRELY peaceful. When it was over, Trump asked us to go to the capital to let our voices be heard regarding election fraud. Throughout the afternoon, there was a group of guys... seemed very sketchy to me .. who were walking around asking people to storm the capital with them. “We’re storming the capital, we need you... let’s go!!” As far as I could see, no one paid them any attention and I personally, thought they were joking. So the rally ends, we all go to the capital. I was farthest from the stage and closest to the capital, so I got there very quickly. By the time I got there, the place was erupting. Whatever was going on started before the rally even ended. I walked all the way up to see what was happening - then a group of about 50 Asians and people who were absolutely a mess - they looked like meth heads in Trump gear - walked by with bull horns screaming “Decertify”. There were dozens of them, they came out of nowhere, they looked angry and like they were on a mission. As soon as they all walked by, I told the person I was with, “we need to go”. Whoever started this insanity is a lot of things - but they are not Trump supporters. Walking back to the hotel, we heard from people that BLM were also rioting - why did that start? We were told the National Guard would be there - there were no national guard members to be seen anywhere. I haven’t even turned the news on but I’m hearing from everyone that it’s an absolute horror story. I am here to tell you - I was there. This did not start with Trump supporters. If it did, I’ll apologize and rethink everything I’ve believed in for 4 years - but again, what I saw was a huge group of interlopers and agitators who for obvious reasons, want Trump supporters to look like violent lunatics. It’s just not true.
