B”H Daniel ben Rivka received his O-negative blood-type Kidney. But will need prayers that it holds steadfast.
Parsha Teruma
The last three Parshiyos we dealt with Mitzvos between man and his fellow and three weeks in a row the Kedushas of Shabbos and last week also Shmita and Yom Tov. But the vast majority was between people. This week’s Parsha we upgrade in holiness to the Mishkan and what components are needed to build it and the dimensions of the Ohel Moed. We shall continue on with this with other Mitzvos with the story of the Golden Calf and the repentance of Moshe until the end of Sefer Shemos.
25:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 'Speak unto the children of Israel, that they take for Me an offering; of every man whose heart makes him willing ye shall take My offering. 3 And this is the offering which ye shall take of them: gold, and silver, and brass; 4 and blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen, and goats' hair; 5 and rams' skins dyed red, and sealskins, and acacia-wood; 6 oil for the light, spices for the anointing oil, and for the sweet incense; 7 onyx stones, and stones to be set, for the ephod, and for the breastplate.
There is a whole larger world in Kabbalah than the ordinary physical world. We know in modern physics of conductors of electricity and gold, silver and copper are elements that we use the most. In the world of Kabbalah, precious stones and metals have various properties that the physical world doesn’t measure (at this stage of knowledge) or know of. Taking 11 Dimensions or sub-dimensions into account these are all special items with shall we say good atomic and crystal vibrations for the world.
8 And let them make Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them. 9 According to all that I show thee, the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all the furniture thereof, even so shall ye make it.
HASHEM is about to give to Moshe the dimensions of the Mishkan and the items to be placed inside. However, Moshe has no idea how to make them. It will be Betzalel and Oholiav that will be given the prophecy that have the skills and knowledge how to built the items from raw materials.
10 And they shall make an ark of acacia-wood: two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof.
The Ark is called Teva and Aron in Hebrew. Did it open from the sides like our Aron Kodesh or did it open from the top like in Raiders of the Lost Ark? Since it was an Ark of Testimony the nation could peek in from the side if it was opened to the public to see the Mann, the blossoming staff, brass serpent, etc. Otherwise they would have had to been held up by priests.
11 And thou shalt overlay it with pure gold, within and without shalt thou overlay it, and shalt make upon it a crown of gold round about.
Gold is the most malleable metal and can be beaten to foil 4 microns thick. So the overlay need not to have been that thick or the crown. On the other hand, four microns might be too thin so probably thicker.
12 And thou shalt cast four rings of gold for it, and put them in the four feet thereof; and two rings shall be on the one side of it, and two rings on the other side of it.
These were heavy thick that would hold up the Ark via wooden poles.
13 And thou shalt make staves of acacia-wood, and overlay them with gold.
Also over-laid with gold but thick enough not to rip off.
14 And thou shalt put the staves into the rings on the sides of the ark, wherewith to bear the ark.
They were carried on the shoulders originally by Leviim and eventually by Cohanim.
15 The staves shall be in the rings of the ark; they shall not be taken from it. 16 And thou shalt put into the ark the testimony which I shall give thee.
At this point the testimony is not known.
17 And thou shalt make an ark-cover of pure gold: two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof.
Acadia wood is a hard and weighty wood and with the gold was quite heavy.
18 And thou shalt make two cherubim of gold; of beaten work shalt thou make them, at the two ends of the ark-cover. 19 And make one cherub at the one end, and one cherub at the other end; of one piece with the ark-cover shall ye make the cherubim of the two ends thereof. 20 And the cherubim shall spread out their wings on high, screening the ark-cover with their wings, with their faces one to another; toward the ark-cover shall the faces of the cherubim be. 21 And thou shalt put the ark-cover above upon the ark; and in the ark thou shalt put the testimony that I shall give thee.
There is a lot of material and measurements given this week that repeats itself when the Mishkan is being built. I hope to have more coverage in a later week.
22 And there I will meet with thee, and I will speak with thee from above the ark-cover, from between the two cherubim which are upon the ark of the testimony, of all things which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel.
They were the symbol of peace and love facing each other. There are legends that they faced away from each other peace if not war.
23 And thou shalt make a table of acacia-wood: two cubits shall be the length thereof, and a cubit the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof. 24 And thou shalt overlay it with pure gold, and make thereto a crown of gold round about.
The pure beauty of the objects and the crowning touch at the end.
…31 And thou shalt make a candlestick of pure gold: of beaten work shall the candlestick be made, even its base, and its shaft; its cups, its knops, and its flowers, shall be of one piece with it. 32 And there shall be six branches going out of the sides thereof: three branches of the candlestick out of the one side thereof, and three branches of the candle-stick out of the other side thereof;
In past years, I have covered this with physical photos of the Temple Institute and suggest going and looking in the archives of the rabbipauli.blogspot.com
… 37 And thou shalt make the lamps thereof, seven; and they shall light the lamps thereof, to give light over against it. 38 And the tongs thereof, and the snuffdishes thereof, shall be of pure gold. 39 Of a talent of pure gold shall it be made, with all these vessels. 40 And see that thou make them after their pattern, which is being shown thee in the mount.
The flames were adjustable in the Lamps.
26:1 Moreover thou shalt make the tabernacle with ten curtains: of fine twined linen, and blue, and purple, and scarlet, with cherubim the work of the skillful workman shalt thou make them. 2 The length of each curtain shall be eight and twenty cubits, and the breadth of each curtain four cubits; all the curtains shall have one measure. 3 Five curtains shall be coupled together one to another; and the other five curtains shall be coupled one to another. 4 And thou shalt make loops of blue upon the edge of the one curtain that is outmost in the first set; and likewise shalt thou make in the edge of the curtain that is outmost in the second set. 5 Fifty loops shalt thou make in the one curtain, and fifty loops shalt thou make in the edge of the curtain that is in the second set; the loops shall be opposite one to another.
The best skilled women skillfully weaved the curtains individually and then together.
6 And thou shalt make fifty clasps of gold, and couple the curtains one to another with the clasps, that the tabernacle may be one whole. 7 And thou shalt make curtains of goats' hair for a tent over the tabernacle; eleven curtains shalt thou make them. 8 The length of each curtain shall be thirty cubits, and the breadth of each curtain four cubits; the eleven curtains shall have one measure. 9 And thou shalt couple five curtains by themselves, and six curtains by themselves, and shalt double over the sixth curtain in the forefront of the tent. 10 And thou shalt make fifty loops on the edge of the one curtain that is outmost in the first set, and fifty loops upon the edge of the curtain which is outmost in the second set. … 12 And as for the overhanging part that remaineth of the curtains of the tent, the half curtain that remaineth over shall hang over the back of the tabernacle. 13 And the cubit on the one side, and the cubit on the other side, of that which remaineth over in the length of the curtains of the tent, shall hang over the sides of the tabernacle on this side and on that side, to cover it. 14 And thou shalt make a covering for the tent of rams' skins dyed red and a covering of giraffe skins above.
Giraffe skins rare because they had to be captured, kosher slaughtered and were colorful.
15 And thou shalt make the boards for the tabernacle of acacia-wood, standing up. 16 Ten cubits shall be the length of a board, and a cubit and a half the breadth of each board. 17 Two tenons shall there be in each board, joined one to another; thus shalt thou make for all the boards of the tabernacle. 18 And thou shalt make the boards for the tabernacle, twenty boards for the south side southward: 19 And thou shalt make forty sockets of silver under the twenty boards: two sockets under one board for its two tenons, and two sockets under another board for its two tenons; 20 and for the second side of the tabernacle, on the north side, twenty boards. 21 And their forty sockets of silver: two sockets under one board, and two sockets under another board. … 25 Thus there shall be eight boards, and their sockets of silver, sixteen sockets: two sockets under one board, and two sockets under another board.
The boards were tapered and an Amar wide at the bottom to a finger breath on the top. The triangle shape taper gave the support needed for the Mishkan. The Taper lowered the weight tremendously.
26 And thou shalt make bars of acacia-wood: five for the boards of the one side of the tabernacle, 27 and five bars for the boards of the other side of the tabernacle, and five bars for the boards of the side of the tabernacle, for the hinder part westward; … 31 And thou shalt make a veil of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen; with cherubim the work of the skillful workman shall it be made. 32 And thou shalt hang it upon four pillars of acacia overlaid with gold, their hooks being of gold, upon four sockets of silver. 33 And thou shalt hang up the veil under the clasps, and shalt bring in thither within the veil the ark of the testimony; and the veil shall divide unto you between the holy place and the most holy. … 36 And thou shalt make a screen for the door of the Tent, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen, the work of the weaver in colours. … 27:1 And thou shalt make the altar of acacia-wood, five cubits long, and five cubits broad; the altar shall be four-square; and the height thereof shall be three cubits. 2 And thou shalt make the horns of it upon the four corners thereof; the horns thereof shall be of one piece with it; and thou shalt overlay it with brass. 3 And thou shalt make its pots to take away its ashes, and its shovels, and its basins, and its flesh-hooks, and its fire-pans; all the vessels thereof thou shalt make of brass. 4 And thou shalt make for it a grating of network of brass; and upon the net shalt thou make four brazen rings in the four corners thereof. … 9 And thou shalt make the court of the tabernacle: for the south side southward there shall be hangings for the court of fine twined linen a hundred cubits long for one side. 10 And the pillars thereof shall be twenty, and their sockets twenty, of brass; the hooks of the pillars and their fillets shall be of silver. 11 And likewise for the north side in length there shall be hangings a hundred cubits long, and the pillars thereof twenty, and their sockets twenty, of brass; the hooks of the pillars and their fillets of silver. 12 And for the breadth of the court on the west side shall be hangings of fifty cubits: their pillars ten, and their sockets ten. … 18 The length of the court shall be a hundred cubits, and the breadth fifty everywhere, and the height five cubits, of fine twined linen, and their sockets of brass. 19 All the instruments of the tabernacle in all the service thereof, and all the pins thereof, and all the pins of the court, shall be of brass.
Parsha Zachor Devarim 25:17-19
25:17 Remember what Amalek did unto thee by the way as ye came forth out of Egypt; 18 how he met thee by the way, and smote the hindmost of thee, all that were enfeebled in thy rear, when thou wast faint and weary; and he feared not God. 19 Therefore it shall be, when the LORD thy God hath given you rest from all thine enemies round about, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance to possess it, that thou shalt blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven; thou shalt not forget.
PARASHAS ZACHOR is the Maftir of Parsha Tetzaveh except, like this year, it is a Purim Meshulash. Therefore, it is pushed up one Shabbos to Parsha Teruma, this week’s Parsha, B”H, so that it can be read in advance of Purim, as is the halacha, affording additional insights into both Parshiyos, as well as Purim.
The Pri Tzaddik points out that the mitzvah to recall what Amalek did to the Jewish people on their way to Mt. Sinai is really a mitzvah to recall what the Jewish people did to draw his attack. It’s just that Chazal did not want to phrase the mitzvah in terms of the sin that was committed, so they focused more on Amalek’s attack instead. We’re supposed to get that, and remember the part that counts the most.
It’s not hard. Rashi, on the spot, mentions the error that resulted in Amalek’s attack. When the water ran out the Jewish people complained and asked, “Is God amongst us or not?” That’s it, just five Hebrew words, and the next thing they knew they were being attacked by some nomadic tribe from the south of Eretz Canaan just to mutilate and kill them.
It’s important to know that the Jewish people had not asked if God was with them or not, even though that is what the words seem to say. How could they have asked such a question after the Mann just began to fall from Heaven, and the Clouds of Glory encompassed them? So, what then did they ask to draw Amalek out?
The answer involves a little kabbalah. Though the word “Ayin” can be translated as “or not,” here it means something far more profound. “Ayin” is also a Name of God, one of the most sublime of all, making the question they asked also more sublime: Is God amongst us or Ayin?
But what does that even mean, if Ayin is just another Name for God? It means that the Jewish people weren’t asking if God was amongst them, but which level of God. Was it the level of the Shem Hovayah, the Name printed in siddurim but too holy at this time to pronounce as spelled? Or, the level of Ayin, too sublime to even understand?
What’s the difference? The Leshem explains:
All redemptions are the result of a revelation of Arich Anpin. He (Moshe) explained to the Jewish people that The Holy One, Blessed Is He, was dealing with them on the level of the light of Arich Anpin called “Ayin,” which works above any measure. In other words, it does not depend upon merit or demerit. (Drushei Olam HaTohu, Chelek 2, Drush 5, Anaf 4, Siman 3)
Therefore; the Leshem says, the question was not, “Is God amongst or not?” but: Is the level of Hovayah amongst us, which means our sins can affect the outcome of a situation, or the level of Ayin, which is not impacted by either the good or bad we do?
Considering the fact that the Jewish people were fresh out of Egyptian slavery, and new at this mitzvah thing, the question seems to have been a valid one. Why was a vicious attack by Amalek the answer to that question? Copywrite @thirty-six.org & @Torah.org
Rabbi Dr. Avraham J. Twerski – Brilliant Torah Scholar and
Mental Health Giant by Tzvi Gluck
https://www.aish.com/jw/s/My-Debt-of-Gratitude-to-Rabbi-Abraham-Twerski.html?s=shl
At Amudim, we know all too well just how hard it has been to get the Jewish community to accept the realities of mental health challenges and we have been humbled to see how the tide has turned in a positive direction in recent years. But we also know equally well that none of what we do today would be possible without the groundbreaking work of a giant of a man who blazed the trail that we follow today - Rabbi Dr. Abraham J. Twerski, zecher tzadik l’vracha.
There is no doubt that Rabbi Dr. Twerski deserves to be remembered as a tzadik, a title that he rightfully earned in his lifetime. While it would be relatively easy to be blinded by his impressive years of work as a psychiatrist, or even as the author of dozens of books, not to mention a brilliant talmid chochom, but Rabbi Dr. Twerski was so much more than that. He was a man who positively impacted countless families and individuals in so many ways, a point that was abundantly clear to anyone from his tzavaa, which specifically stated that no eulogies be made upon his passing. Instead, Rabbi Dr. Twerski asked that his well-known composition, Hoshia Es Amecha be sung, in the hopes that the melody that brought joy to so many for decades would weigh heavily in his favor as he stood before the heavenly court.
My father and Rabbi Dr. Twerski shared a close relationship that spanned 60 years and when I became involved with those in danger of slipping through our societal cracks, it was a privilege to be able to reach out to the man who was known simply in our family as “Reb Shia.” I will never forget the time I reached out to him to discuss the suitability of 12 step meetings, trying to ascertain how I could send anyone to a meeting that more often than not was being held in a church. Explaining to me that cases that had reached that level were clearly dinei nefashos, he told me straight out, “When a patient has cancer, do you look for the best doctor or a Jewish doctor?” His thoughts on that particular matter were published in one of his many books and he made it clear to me that he was more than happy to have a discussion on the matter with anyone who saw the issue differently.
In addition to being available to offer guidance on specific cases or emergencies as they arose, Rabbi Dr. Twerski was helpful to me in many other ways. Nearly 15 years ago I found myself dealing with a crisis involving a family that had multiple children living in an abusive environment. With numerous Rabbanim weighing in with different views, I reached out to Rabbi Dr. Twerski for an outside opinion and he introduced me to someone that he felt could get to the heart of the matter - Dr. David Pelcovitz. Not only had Rabbi Dr. Twerski put me in touch with an individual who was perfectly suited to help me navigate the complexities of this particular case, he opened up a golden opportunity for me, and Dr. Pelcovitz has been a tremendous inspiration to me personally and an invaluable asset to Amudim since the day we first opened our doors in 2014.
Over the years, Rabbi Dr. Twerski became a guiding light for Amudim. While he wasn’t able to join us for our 2015 mental health conference, he worked with us every step of the way to create the program’s different elements. He spent hours on the phone with Mendy Klein a’h and me in order to maximize the event’s potential and, with his help, it was a groundbreaking two days that gave mental health professionals the opportunity to share their feedback from the trenches, helping us focus our efforts to help as many people as possible in their personal struggles.
Rabbi Dr. Twerski also taught me the importance of recovery, explaining that while there are those who go through recovery with a goal of how to live their lives and typically fare well in the long run, there are others who live just so that they can be in recovery and they keep repeating the same destructive patterns over and over again. Rabbi Dr. Twerski brought home the lesson that you need to proactively end the vicious cycle haunting those in the latter group by giving them the tools to approach life and its sometimes-daunting circumstances in a healthier way.
But perhaps one of the most incredible lessons I learned from Rabbi Dr. Twerski came during a Zoom conference for high level mental health professionals, community leaders and philanthropists that took place approximately two years ago. One participant voiced their opinion that a person can only be helped once they have hit rock bottom and when I disagreed wholeheartedly with that statement, another person jumped in, saying that Rabbi Dr. Twerski had said exactly that in one of his books. Wasting no time, Rabbi Dr. Twerski explained that while he had made that statement 30 years ago, it no longer applied in today’s world, where hitting rock bottom typically means death.
And that was vintage Rabbi Dr. Twerski. He was someone who could balance Torah, medical knowledge and practical life skills, while still being able to adapt his expertise and advice to contemporary times to be consistent with changing realities. I have tried to model my own approach at Amudim after the example that Rabbi Dr. Twerski set and when it has sometimes seemed awkward and embarrassing to do an about face, I remind myself that if Rabbi Dr. Twerski was comfortable enough to publicly state that change is appropriate and healthy when needed, then surely I can do the same.
Throughout my life, whenever I hit a speed bump, I knew I could always count on Rabbi Dr. Twerski. In addition to Amudim having been blessed by the ability benefit from his insight, he was there for us when we opened our Israel office, offering to do whatever he could as we, like him, put down new roots on holy soil. I treasure the moments I spent with him, particularly the time he sat me down at a family wedding and told me that he truly believed that Amudim’s work over the last several years to promote awareness and destigmatize mental health challenges had surpassed anything he had done in his lifetime. Surely it was an exaggeration and was meant as a form of encouragement, but it was meaningful and touched my heart all the same.
That was Rabbi Dr. Twerski. Always uplifting. Always inspiring. And always there, not just for me, and not just for Amudim, but for the entire Jewish community. I remember the times when people would try to convince him to give his stamp of approval for one organization over another and he would have none of it, saying only, “I do what is best for Klal Yisroel. Don’t get me involved in politics and games.”
During his 90 years on this earth, Rabbi Dr. Twerski made a tremendous impression as a talmid chochom, a psychiatrist, a rov, a clinician and a mentor, a man whose sage advice was a godsend to so many, empowering individuals and families and giving them strength even during their darkest moments. His ability to integrate his seemingly boundless knowledge of mental health with an equally vast ocean of Torah values was unparalleled, and even with his incredible erudition, he had the ability to inspire every person - his kindness, humility and sensitivity shining with every word and on every page. Still, despite his many professional accomplishments, I can’t help but remember Rabbi Dr. Twerski as someone who spent his days and nights sowing seeds of happiness and as I close my eyes, the words and notes of his iconic Hoshia Es Amecha echo in my mind, a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to making the world a better place.

Israel with a population of about 9,300,000 or more of which about 4,000,000 are children under 16 has given out at the least the first dose of the Covid vaccine to 43-44% of the population and over 2.5 million like ourselves have had two doses. It took a big load off of us. The revised Statistics on the Pfizer Vaccine in Israel is that it 94% effective and those who do get the disease 92% will not be serious cases. This leaves .8648 of a percent of being really ill after the vaccine. On top of that if one has a normal Asthma Steroid Inhaler on hand and uses it twice a day in the beginning of the disease, the chance of being serious is almost zero.

Talmud found in Hitler’s Bunker: On page 87b, the Talmud recalls the persecution that Jews suffer in each generation, followed by a famous Talmudic observation that God's grace to the Jews js that Jews were not exiled to only one place, so that when Jews are persecuted in one venue, they can thrive in another locale.
The discussion's conclusion echoed the words of a prominent Roman who said that he dreams that the day will come when they will be able to indeed kill all of the Jews.
This was the precise "vision" of the Wannsee conference which occurred eighty years ago, when leaders of the Third Reich convened a conference to set in motion a plan to murder all 11 million Jews of Europe.
Given the Nazi penchant to actually learn Jewish texts so as to "know the enemy," could it be that there were Germans in the bunker who studied Pesachim 87b? We may never know but it seems fitting. https://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/297022
